Madiquel barely waited for Xyreith to land, already anxiously undoing the straps that were holding her securely to the big bronze dragon and sliding down his leg while R’nya turned to blink before helping Rhaedalyn. Landing on the ground, Madiquel took a moment to give Xyreith’s leg a gentle pat of thanks before she turned around and grinned happily to herself as she took off across the Weyrbowl. Fluttering around her head, relayed images – Madiquel couldn’t make much sense of them, but got the impression that Xyxyth was in on the surprise.

Following the directions given by her firelizard, Madiquel soon found her way into the Weyr, and through the halls, smiling cheerfully at anyone she saw, but moving swiftly enough that they were aware she was on a mission, and as such, no on interrupted the young woman until she finally arrived outside the Weyrling Barracks. She could have come in from the grounds, but she didn’t want to risk A’tay seeing her before she got to surprise him! Peering around the door frame, Madiquel looked around the common area curiously, bright eyes searching for the familiar features of her friend.

In all honesty, it took Madiquel an embarrassingly long time to spot her friend, and she only managed because Clover flew into the room, and then popped into and out of between so she appeared a small distance before A’tay. Madiquel heard him talking to the firelizard, but it was kind of strange; he sounded different to when she’d last seen him, and she didn’t know why. Maybe it was having a dragon? She knew dragons changed people, and she supposed Xyxyth would be no different. And Ayontay would be learning all kinds of things now, too, and making new friends, and…

Madiquel gave herself a little shake and finally crept into the room, clearly going out of her way to sneak up on A’tay, she was pleased when his companions – after a couple of startled looks and blinking – were careful not to give her away, or at least, A’tay didn’t notice anything (but then, Clover was being a great distraction!) and Madiquel finally made it up behind her friend (when had he gotten so tall?) and quickly but carefully, Madiquel reached up to slip her hands gently over A’tay’s eyes, positively beaming at her success.

“Guess who!”

Clover suddenly appearing before him wasn’t anything new, though it still usually startled A’tay the first time she did it. Poor Clover and his own Shadow got their practice in for going between and sneaking up on people, that was for sure! They were always assisting in passing notes between their humans and A’tay wasn’t ashamed to say he kept all of the long letters he was sent and any of the ones that were passed back and forth with small notes and replies until it was filled up if it ended on his end. He’d never regret Impressing Xyxyth, but the bronze did make it hard to see his friend whenever he wanted like he once was able to. They hadn’t lived in the same Weyr since only Telgar was open, but at least he could hitch a ride to Fort when the urge struck. Now, he was stuck communicating through firelizards until Madiquel could make a trip to Ista.

He figured this was going to be another one of the times where a letter was being delivered and A’tay felt a thrill run through him. What was Madiquel up to? How was everyone doing? But he didn’t see a letter with Clover and he frowned, talking quietly to the creature, forgetting his own on his shoulder and the few other Weyrlings that had been hanging around with him. Clover and Shadow chittered excitedly to each other but A’tay wasn’t getting much out of it and was starting to frown even more when delicate hands covered his eyes, startling him as much as Clover had.

This was one of the times where he wished he was more like any one of his relatives. They all would have been quick with a flirty comment that left the girl swooning or with a funny quip that left the girl laughing. A’tay didn’t have anything that fit either criteria and wondered if that was because he wasn’t flirty or funny or because his brain was turning to mush at the realisation that Madiquel was there in person. It was probably some combination of all three.

“Madi!” A’tay grabbed her hands to pull them away from his face so he could turn around smiling before he pulled her into a hug. He really had missed her and didn’t realise exactly how much until that very moment when he felt her and held her close. Letter were wonderful but they weren’t always enough, especially when danger was involved. It was a while ago now but he still stepped back to take a look at her, inspecting her closely for any signs of injury from the insane Hatching. A letter from Madiquel and the word from both of his older siblings stating nothing happened to her and she was okay just wasn’t enough. Seeing her now in one piece and without any visible scarring, A’tay finally felt at ease about the whole situation.

“You’re here! I wasn’t expecting you for a while since classes and Ista in general is boring right now.” He kept smiling at her and kept looking her over as well, convinced he was dreaming. She looked so good! And so happy! “I can’t believe you’re here! Why are you here? Xyxyth will be excited to see you as well! He’s sunning with some friends right now.” A’tay waved off in the direction of the Bowl, knowing his dragon was out there somewhere but not entirely sure where, though he wasn’t worried.

Madiquel laughed happily as A’tay turned around, pulling her into a hug. She clung to him tightly for a few moments, loosening her arms when he moved back but not removing her hands from his waist. She giggled as he kept staring, apparently convinced she was about to vanish between like one of their firelizards. “The Weyrleaders brought me!” she grinned, eyes bright. The pair had some sort of duty reason related to their actual trip, though Madiquel had learned not too long ago that all she had to do was ask, and they would find a time that was agreeable to bring her to Ista; problem was, as much as she loved seeing Ayontay, she hated being a nuisance.

Turning her head in the direction A’tay waved to indicate his dragon, Madiquel blinked and then turned back to grin up at her friend – best friend! – and tilted her head slightly. “Are you busy?” She asked, peering around him at the splattering of Weyrlings that were in the room. It didn’t look like they’d been doing anything important, but what did she know of Weyrlinghood? Still grinning, she leaned up on her toes to whisper by A’tay’s ear, though her words were filled with excitement and her whisper wasn’t as quiet as her motions would have believed it to be. “I have news!” She dropped back down to her feet, and continued to beam.

Madiquel knew she hadn’t mentioned her desire to be a Healer since a few letters after Ayontay had Impressed to Xyxyth; the more real that it go, the less she had wanted to mention it because what if talking about it made it stop or… something? But now that it was literally just days before she started her apprenticeship, Madiquel felt it was the perfect time to tell her friend all about it. Besides, she needed someone to gush to about it! Her Papa and Rhaedalyn were both proud and happy for her, but she knew moving to the Hall kind of made them sad, because she wouldn’t be around for them – and that made Madiquel sad, too.

A’tay froze and his eyes went wide when Madiquel got up on her tip toes, leaning in close… and whispered in his ear. Of course. Of course that was all that was for. Why would he think there would be anything other than a sharing of secrets, especially in front of other people? He was such an idiot and he really needed to either make a move on his best friend or get over that idea, and fast. Living in limbo was going to be the death of him one day if his reaction right then foretold the future.

He’d worry about his feelings another day, because Madiquel had news and she seemed about ready to burst from holding it in and that was far more important than holding his feelings in. “Not busy at all! Sorry,” the apology was given to the three boys he had been chatting with as he more or less implied that talking with them wasn’t very important. Normally he’d feel a lot worse and if it was anyone else asking, he’d be polite and point out that he was busy with some other people so he didn’t offend them, but it was Madiquel! Hopefully they’d understand—and not decide they were a couple or something awkward he’d have to explain later, though given the greeting, what else would they think?

A’tay took Madiquel’s hand and led her away, deciding they could go find Xyxyth and sit in the sun with him while they caught up. “Xyxyth is friends with their dragons,” he explained when they were out of the room where he felt like he could speak freely. “But truthfully? I don’t know if they like me because of me or because of Xyxyth’s hide. They’re bonded to a green and the other two are blues. Good to be in tight with the bronzeriders in your clutch, right? One day they might be protecting you or helping you with something.” He loved Xyxyth, but sometimes he wished his dragon was a blue so he could blend in with the larger group and be overlooked and not seen as special.

You will never blend in because you are special. A’tay wrinkled his nose as his cheerful dragon pointed out one of his favourite things. At least he wasn’t demanding his human try something when A’tay knew he would fail at it, which was the other favourite thing Xyxyth liked lately. Stop moping and dawdling! Mads hasn’t seen my new hide yet! A’tay was about to wrinkle his nose again at the nickname for Madiquel but his excitement won out and A’tay was suddenly almost dragging her with him.

“I can’t believe I almost forgot! C’mon, you won’t believe this! And I haven’t forgotten you have news but I know Xyxyth will want to know it, too!” Xyxyth was growing a lot faster than his clutchmates and thanks to that, not only was A’tay getting a work out with the constant oiling, but his dragon already had his adult hide and A’tay was thankful it was practically the same shade and not a crazy orange shade like he feared. Madiquel would freak out when she saw his size and colour now and A’tay wanted to see her reaction. “He should be right around… there he is!” A’tay pointed to the bronze that was just getting to his feet to come meet them the rest of the way.

Madiquel waved cheerfully to the other weyrlings and trotted to keep up with A’tay’s longer strides. “Why wouldn’t they like you?” Madiquel asked, blinking up at her friend with a slight frown. “You’re amazing!” But she did consider the reasoning A’tay added, and she scrunched her nose up slightly. “But you’re probably not wrong, either,” she added, tugging on A’tay’s had a little so he slowed down for a moment and she could keep up more easily. “Green and blueriders have it really tough, and I know Papa used to have a few that would come to him when they needed someone higher up they could trust.”

She’d probably listened in to one too many of her Papa’s delusional rants, but she’d also been spending a lot of time in the Weyr’s healer rooms doing easy tasks, and she’d seen more than a few greenriders and the handful of blueriders come in for medical help after a run in with someone who thought they were better than whomever they’d beaten up. Madiquel squeezed A’tay’s hand. “Just be careful who you help,” she said honestly, and likely with more insight than most of her male friends would credit her with. Not because they thought she was dumb, but because she wasn’t supposed to know the things she knew, because they went out of their way to protect her.

Madiquel gave a squeal of surprise, which ended in laughter, when A’tay suddenly pulled her into a run and she struggled to keep her feet – and then keep up – with her long legged friend. Still laughing, Madiquel crashed into A’tay when he stopped, and she hugged her arms around her friend, laughing at him before she stepped around to look where he was pointing, and her eyes widened as she stared at what was clearly Xyxyth. “Oh… my…”

Dropping A’tay’s hand, Madiquel moved quietly towards the growing bronze dragon, her eyes wide and face awestruck. Granted, there was a part of Madiquel that knew the dragon before her was so far removed from being Denath that her reaction was probably ridiculous, but in that moment, everything about Xyxyth reminded her of her father’s bronze dragon, and Madiquel wasn’t aware of the tears tumbling down her cheeks until she pressed her face against the side of Xyxyth’s cheek, sobbing softly. It took her several moments before she managed to compose herself, drawing back carefully and wiping at her face with the backs of her hands.

“You’re beautiful,” Madiquel said gently, smiling softly at the dragon before glancing over at A’tay and taking the couple of steps to close the distance between them, so she could take his hand again and mould herself against his side, still looking at Xyxyth. “You’ve grown so much!” She said, her cheerful nature coming back easily as she smiled at the bronze, and turned to smile playfully up at A’tay. “You both have!” She flushed, and looked down with a scrunched up nose. “I, um, didn’t recognise you,” she admitted quietly, shifting uncomfortably and somewhat ashamed of herself. How could she ever not recognise her best friend? Not recognise Ayontay?

“I miss not seeing you more often,” she said, taking a deep breath and looking up, “and its going to get worse, before it gets better, because…” Madiquel took another deep breath, and her good news suddenly felt heavy in her belly as she peered up at A’tay with furrowed eyebrows. “Re—R’nya got me into the Healer Hall, and I start my apprenticeship in the new Turn, and I’m really excited,” she said earnestly, “and I know Papa can just ride a horse down, and I know you will graduate, and I know Rhae will take me anywhere if I want to go…” She broke off, and dropped A’tay’s hand so she could hug herself, looking down at her feet, “but I’m scared.”

Xyxyth’s own excitement disappeared as he realised the bubbly girl was no longer bubbly but instead seemed to be crying. He cast a glance to his rider even as he lightly nuzzled against Madiquel. A’tay currently wasn’t much help as he paused in his own merriment and cocked his head to the side as he watched his best friend quietly sob against his dragon. Was it happy tears? It didn’t seem to be the case and it was only when he thought about her father killing him for making Madiquel sad that A’tay realised the issue.

Jajojin had been a bronzerider and while A’tay couldn’t remember Denath’s appearance that well thanks to being young and not spending as much time around the large dragon like Madiquel did, he knew there was some similarities which was obviously enough to affect Madiquel. Of course he had to get the dragon that made the girl he liked cry on sight! He wasn’t lucky enough for it to be a classmate or even his brother. Nope, it wouldn’t be his luck if something worked to his favour. He took a moment to explain Jajojin, Denath, and the resemblance to Xyxyth and loved his dragon all the more when, after Madiquel took his hand again, Xyxyth crouched low and leaned his head to butt against her side gently to show his affection wordlessly. Xyxyth seemed to like most everyone but those that A’tay liked a lot received a bit more affection out of the bronze that sometimes acted more blue or green.

A’tay laughed at not being recognised right away. It wouldn’t do to be hurt over the confession when they didn’t see each other regularly and especially since he knew he had changed in appearance. “It’s okay. I grew a bit over the summer and Mylorah says I lost a lot of my ‘baby fat’,” A’tay did air quotes to show he was quoting his sister with the term, “and have started toning up a bit because of Xyxyth’s constant oiling. He just had to grow faster than everyone else and make me work harder.” Not that he ever thought being a dragonrider would be anything other than hard work, especially in the early days. Even fully matured, Xyxyth would always need baths and oilings, though perhaps not as regularly as when he was growing, but it would keep him busy.

A’tay frowned when Madiquel continued on about not seeing each other. Could one be dumped without ever being in a relationship? He was pretty sure that was about to happen no matter how excited they had both been minutes before but then her words explained an exciting opportunity and not the kiss of death for his feelings—even if she did let go of his hand right then. “Madi! That’s so… I’m so… I can’t even find the right words to say how amazing that is!” He laughed and was about to throw his arms around her for another hug but stopped and took hold of her shoulders and bent at the knee enough to make them eye level like they were not that long ago.

“Really, it is amazing and nothing to be afraid of because you’re, well, you. You’re good at everything you attempt, you pick things up quickly, you have so much passion for things that you enjoy, and you make friends easier than anyone else. They’ll love you there.” A’tay knew the Halls were more for men but he also knew the Healers were a bit more tolerant of women in their Hall. Not that he had any idea if they were given the same lessons or treated differently. Holders were weird and he was going to have to write a letter to his Aunt Eridella to ask her more about Halls.

“I mean, I was mauled at a Hatching and still went back out there and ended up Impressing to a dragon that seems to be doing okay so far.” Sure, his pinkie finger twitched sometimes from light nerve damage and he had some scars on his hand, but he made it through one of the scariest moments in his life to keep going after what he wanted. That alone was a good inspirational story since A’tay didn’t think highly of himself in terms of bravery or most things, really. “If I can conquer being afraid, you’ll have it beat into submission before you even leave the Weyr.” And nothing anyone, including Madiquel, said could sway him from thinking otherwise.

Madiquel looked up, her eyebrows furrowed together, when A’tay gripped her shoulders lightly and peered at her intently. She blinked at him. A shy smile fought for – and won – control of her lips at his words of praise, and Madiquel dropped her head bashfully; she was somewhat used to getting compliments – Rhaedalyn was very free with them, and her Papa made sure she knew how much he loved her, even if he didn’t outright say the words to her. Even R’nya had offered her words of praise and encouragement. But when they came from A’tay, they settled about as comfortably as a flock of butterflies in her chest.

“Thank you,” Madiquel murmured softly, pressing forward to wrap her arms instead around A’tay’s waist and cling to him tightly for a moment. She didn’t linger long, though, as she pulled back and took A’tay’s hand that had been attacked by the little dragonet and she turned it over to look at the scaring. She still didn’t know enough about Healing to have any say, but she none the less traced the line softly with one finger, before sighing softly. “I don’t know how you did it,” she said, glancing up at Xyxyth. “I don’t know how any of you do.” She shook her head, and gently released her friend’s hand.

“Even before Papa lost Denath, I never wanted to Impress,” she knew most of her friends were aware of her lack of desire for a dragon, but she also knew she’d never actually explained to any of them the why of it. Reaching out, Madiquel gently touched Xyxyth’s nose, and smiled softly at the dragon. “The idea… Nothing frightens me more, Ay-Tay.” She caught herself before she mangled her friend’s name too badly, and threw him an exasperated look, smiling wryly and half hoping her stuttering his name would distract him from her confession.

A’tay was certain his heart stopped when Madiquel took his hand to examine the reminders of the night he Impressed, her touch so gentle and caring. He was doing his best not to think about how wonderful it would be for her to do that always and have it followed up by a kiss since nothing ever came out of wishful thinking. Besides, he still had a young dragon to consider, though Xyxyth was probably mature enough now not to mind sharing A’tay’s affection. Still, he had a feeling it was a one-sided thing anyway given the lack of any signs Madiquel gave that she liked him more than a friend so hiding the feelings from everyone, especially his friendly and pushy dragon, was the way to continue on.

It also wasn’t the important topic at the moment. Madiquel was going to move to Healer Hall and pursue a dream of hers and A’tay couldn’t be happier for her. He did frown a bit at the confession about never wanting to Impress, though he’d known that for a long time. It wasn’t something everyone wanted and while it was a bit odd for a ‘brat, he never thought less of Madiquel for it, especially now that she had a path open to be a Healer. That was an important role and one she would be great at with her compassion and ability to absorb information.

He was about to bring that all up but the slip up of his name made him leave that topic alone—especially since Madiquel looked a bit uncomfortable with it. “It’s weird, huh? It’s taken me a long time to get used to answering to A’tay. You can still call me Ayontay, if you want.” Sure, he was a baby bronzerider with a dragon that thought they could be Weyrleader one day, but he was Madiquel’s friend first and for much longer. What did honorifics and titles mean between friends?

Madiquel smiled gently, and shook her head slightly at A’tay’s permission to retain the use of his old name. Green eyes were bright but determined. “It would be disrespectful,” she said, tilting her head, “to you and to Xyxyth. I’m sure he put a lot of thought into your name,” she glanced playfully at the dragon, but then leaned towards A’tay. “At least he didn’t tease you with a name like your fathers,” she grinned. “You could have been…” Her face scrunched up as she tried to think of a name his dragon could have tortured him with. “Y’ay?” She dissolved into giggles. “O’ay?” She offered, glancing at Xyxyth, and back at A’tay.

Reaching out to take A’tay’s hand, Madiquel lead him over to his dragon, pausing long enough to kiss the bronze weyrling’s soft nose, bathing in warm dragon breath before finishing the short journey to Xyxyth’s side. When the dragon was settled, Madiquel collapsed in a flair of skirts onto the ground. Once she was seated, she settled her skirts back around her neatly, hiding her legs, though her solid dressy boots peeped out. The ground was cool under her bottom, but at least it wasn’t wet or covered in snow!

A smile brightened Madiquel’s face when A’tay settled down beside her, and she was about to say something when Clover reappeared, and Madiquel gave a soft snort of amusement as her little green firelizard chittered and squealed before settling on Xyxyth’s head, chattering away to the bronze dragon; Madiquel was pretty sure whatever Clover was saying was complete baby babble.

“R’nya says my apprenticeship will start in the new Turn, but also that I have to have a meeting with the Master Healer,” her eyes widened significantly at that, and she glanced at A’tay with excited terror. “But I really want to come to your graduation ceremony,” she said, leaning towards A’tay to squeeze his forearm with gentle determination. “I can come, right?” she didn’t want to assume, and her eyebrows drew together to make a crinkle above the dip of her nose. She knew she had a lot of people she could beg a ride from, to get to Ista to be there for the ceremony, and she’d make sure it was okay with the Master Healer when she had her meeting with him, because she would not miss A’tay’s graduation … unless he didn’t want her there.

A’tay was well aware at how lucky he had been with his honorific and had thanked Xyxyth a few times since Impressing for what he chose. He knew he could have easily been O’tay which sounded like a toddler being adorable and screwing up how to say ‘okay’. He also could have been Y’ay, like Madiquel pointed out, and then he’d never know if someone was excited or saying his name. Considering how many vowels he had in his name, he really was lucky he didn’t end up sounding like someone howling in pain with a mash of the letters, a reverse of R’nd’s vowelless existence.

I just picked what made sense to me and flowed the best, the way it was spoken, A’tay could almost feel the mental shrug but knew his dragon was pleased that Madiquel wanted to respect what he did—even while he no doubt started thinking about those other honorifics and if he could use them in some way. He learned early on that Xyxyth liked nicknames and as the dragon fell silent after Madiquel sat down beside him, A’tay had a feeling he’d hear some more soon.

“The meeting is probably just to assess your reading and writing and basic knowledge so he knows where to place you, and you’re great at all of it so you’ll be fine,” A’tay smiled, firmly believing his own words and not just hyping Madiquel up so she wouldn’t worry. She was a good student when they had Harper lessons back in Katila and she was learning things from the Weyrwoman in Fort so it wouldn’t be too bad to meet some other high ranking person and chat with them and be evaluated. Although, he was secretly glad he wasn’t the one getting the once over.

“And I’d like you at my graduation, too. It would only be a few hours so I’m sure you’ll get to come but if you can’t, I’d totally understand and be supportive of your test or whatever has to keep you away.” And he would! His path was to be a dragonrider and maybe one day lead a wing or a Weyr, but Madiquel’s path was to be a Healer and he wouldn’t do anything to get in the way of her succeeding. He’d also definitely be front row at her own graduation, well, if Halls did such things. Didn’t a cousin of his say something about tapping? Tapping what? He didn’t understand all the lingo but he knew Madiquel would explain it all to him once she was settled.

I got it! Xyxyth hadn’t been listening to their conversation, still stuck on names and what each of them could be called. He wasn’t fickle, and would have enjoyed the talk about graduation if he had been listening, but he wanted to give his human friends special names to use between them, show them that even apart they were still close and that was something that seemed vastly important to at least A’tay but probably Madiquel as well.

You’re DiDi and TayTay to my Xyxyth and I will not hear any arguments about it. A’tay instantly felt his cheeks turn red at the names, though he wasn’t really against them. But what if Madiquel was? It also brought up a reminder if the slightly horrifying event when a Lady came to visit them. “He likes names, nicknames. He named a Lady that was ooo’ing and gushing all over him Xylith because their names were sort of similar and he liked her enough to make her a dragon, I guess.” Dragons were so exhausting.

Madiquel’s expression brightened visibly, her eyes sparkling as she grinned at A’tay. “Yay!” She said, before dissolving into silly giggles since they’d just been teasing about that being his new name. Snorting softly, Madiquel shook her head. “I would never miss it!” She promised, still grinning wildly, “even if I have to be kidnapped by one of our friends!” She had no doubt that R’nya would collect her, if she asked, or Rhaedalyn if Aradissicath wasn’t on the Sands at the time, and that her Papa would prefer one of the Weyrleaders ferry her around – but Madiquel would not miss A’tay’s graduation and if that meant going behind her Papa’s back and sneaking a ride from one of their other friends or someone from A’tay’s rather extended family, well, she would.

Honestly, it made her feel rather daring and naughty! Also guilty, because it would upset her Papa, but mostly daring.

Madiquel squeaked when Xyxyth’s voice brushed against her mind, before turning her bright-eyed gaze upon the dragon, wondering what it was that he had. Her head tilted to one side, long hair falling forward over her shoulders. “Got what?” She asked, when it seemed as if the dragon was waiting for one of them to question him – or he had accidentally spoken to her, too, like when he was a baby and had finished his sentence with A’tay. Madiquel shifted her curious gaze to her friend, just as Xyxyth’s voice flooded through her mind once more.

A blank look was given to A’tay, before laughter bubbled up once more, punctured by her little snorts, at the redness of his cheeks as his dragon renamed them. “I love it!” She giggled, turning her fond expression upon Xyxyth and patting his side gently with her hand, the smooth feel of soft dragonhide under her fingers. “Thank you, Xyxyth.” She laughed again, at the mentioning of a Lady being renamed, and Madiquel bit her bottom lip to try and curb her smile. “Xyxyth is good at naming,” she said, mock serious, but all her teasing was aimed at A’tay’s exhausted expression and not at all at Xyxyth. “I like our new names!” A pleased blush coloured her cheeks, “Tay-tay!” Leaning against A’tay, Madiquel gave him a quick hug, pressing a friendly kiss to his cheek before settling back against Xyxyth, her hands in her lap and laughter still on her face.

“I bet even Xyxyth couldn’t come up with a new name for Rh-nd, though,” she giggled, feeling naughty as she teased her friend’s dad again, stumbling over his name like normal. R’nd’s name was something that had (from what Madiquel had been able to determine) been the source of more than a little teasing for turns – and probably would for generations. She wondered how R’nd would feel, knowing it was his strange name that would most likely go down in history, and not his ‘stunning good looks’ or ‘excellent love making’ skills? Though if people were to be believed, those rumours would probably outlive him, too…

A’tay’s feelings were up and then down and then he wasn’t sure where but he tried to keep them in check so Xyxyth’s own mood wasn’t ruined. Nothing about Madiquel had changed, not her behaviour or how she viewed him or anything else so her hugs and light kisses and beautiful smile so full of love and laughter didn’t mean anything more than they did three turns ago. Truthfully, maybe one day he’d find the courage to kiss her properly and confess his feelings but until that day, he decided he’d be fine with what he had with her since he loved it and didn’t want it to change. Which, he knew it would to some degree when she wasn’t even living in a Weyr anymore. How was Jajojin allowing that? Madiquel calmed him and gave him someone to focus on but he loved his daughter too much to ever say no to her.

“You shouldn’t encourage him,” A’tay playfully teased as his thoughts drifted back to the present craziness he was living in. “You don’t know what mischief he can get into.” That wasn’t entirely true since Xyxyth was still a bronze and seemed to have the gene that made him a good leader, which he showed regularly in classes, but his personality was so… blue sometimes that A’tay worried he was going to end up with his own Ayyonth that had fun picking on his rider while befriending the entire dragon population.

Xyxyth rumbled with pleasure at Madiquel’s praise and acceptance of her new name and even looked over his shoulder to give her a little head butt of a nuzzle before falling silent. A’tay knew that meant he was thinking about the challenge that had been issued to him and he was proven right soon after. I like ‘R’nd’ because it is unique and stands out but maybe… O’win? No, boring. R’ind, like the skin of that tart fruit you ate for breakfast, but that might be a bit mean and doesn’t fit the man we’re naming. O’nd because B’jin owns him now. A’tay sighed, knowing the dragon had definitely been speaking to both humans and it wasn’t hard to miss how pleased Xyxyth was with himself for his joke.

“I hope he forgets that name before Dad comes to visit,” A’tay grumbled, hands rubbing at his temples as if he already had a headache from that meeting. It was definitely time to change the topic and there was only one real way to do it and it was what he’d wanted to do since Madiquel appeared. He lowered his hands back to his lap and then turned a slow sly smile at his friend, giving her a moment to realise he was up to something.

“So it’s not as cool as being able to offer to take you flying but… do you wanna ride Xyxyth around the Bowl?” Really, his dragon was still a glorified pony outside of lessons and Weyrlingmaster supervision but that was still something and he was definitely going to offer it to his friend! He knew he had fun meandering around the Bowl on dragon back and sometimes he raced some of his classmates so he hoped the idea appealed to Madiquel as well.

“And if you do, I have no idea if it’s easier for me to lift you up or to go up first and help you up that way,” A’tay frowned, glancing to his dragon. Xyxyth was larger than his classmates but he wasn’t the size of a dragon like Xyreith or Aradissicath, Madiquel’s usual rides, but he wasn’t sure which way was the polite way to help a woman mount a dragon yet. He’d never paid attention to such things growing up and it hadn’t been taught to them yet. Would they be taught that? He suspected they would be if they were expected to ferry Holders around.

Madiquel blew a raspberry at A’tay when he scolded her playfully for encouraging his dragon in his apparent desire to give new names to everyone he came across – if the comments were anything to go by! A bubbling laugh erupted from Madiquel when Xyxyth started sharing his ideas, and Madiquel snorted in a very unladylike manner at ‘O’nd’ before shaking her head. “I like ‘R’ind’,” she said, blushing just slightly, her lips twisted as they fought to grimace and laugh “I can say it!” Shaking her head to herself, Madiquel flopped sideways to lean comfortably against A’tay.

It didn’t last long, though, as A’tay went from grumbling to smirking at her in a way that had Madiquel’s eyes narrowing suspiciously. When the offer came, she flew upright, grasping A’tay’s arm with tight fingers, her eyes now wide as saucers. “REALLY?!” She actually shrieked, slapping a hand over her mouth at the end to try and prevent herself from hurting her friend’s ears. “Ohh, yes please!” Scrambling to her feet, Madiquel danced on the spot excitedly as A’tay mumbled about the easiest way to get her on top of the bronze beast.

“R’nya usually pulls me up,” Madiquel answered finally, when her best friend’s question actually connected in her mind, and she bounced closer to the young dragon, peering up at him and then back at A’tay. “I don’t think I could climb up by myself, especially not without straps, and my skirts are not going to help at all,” she added, flaring her skirts out as if she were about to curtsy, and kicking one foot out at the hem of her skirts. Her boots were sturdy, at least! “I should have worn pants.” Oh well, too late now! “Next time!” she promised, eyes sparkling with excitement about the prospect of ‘next time’ and that it might mean flying with her best friend and his dragon!

A’tay was mentally flailing at all of his stupidity. How could he forget Madiquel wasn’t in pants? How could he offer her a ride without any straps on Xyxyth? They weren’t going to go flying, so it wouldn’t be as dangerous but she’d have nothing to hold onto while they walked around the Bowl. He really needed to pay more attention to everything going on around him! So start now and notice that she doesn’t care about any of that and get up here and help her up.

Xyxyth had a point and A’tay felt his face go hot from embarrassment at all of the mistakes he was making, though it didn’t look like Madiquel noticed them. At least she wasn’t pointing them out, if she did, and he appreciated that. Xyxyth moved into the position they found worked best for A’tay to climb up and he explained the process as he went, in case Madiquel was interested in such a thing or wanted to try it when he helped her up; which he attempted to do a moment later when he was situated and debated if it was better for her to be in front of him or behind him.

Truthfully, he liked it either way since they would be kind of cuddling one or the other, but what would be safer for her. Which would Jajojin encourage? Since they didn’t have any straps—and A’tay was kind of kicking himself for not putting them on earlier to give Xyxyth the afternoon to adjust to them—he felt like Madiquel in front was the better option. That way, he’d have his arms around her to help keep her steady and hopefully keep her from sliding around.

“Come on up, the dragon’s fine,” he teased with his hand extended, playing on the familiar phrase about the water’s temperature. He was so lucky to have Xyxyth as the dragon really was fine. Sure, he was a bit bossy at times and had high expectations for them, but he was kind and the other dragons in their class seemed to adore him and look to him as the example. It made A’tay even more comfortable with the idea of having Madiquel already riding him. He knew he could trust Xyxyth no matter what to keep his best friend safe.

Despite the fact that she couldn’t keep her feet from dancing excitedly as she watched A’tay climb aboard his dragon, Madiquel did pay careful attention to the things he was saying, and watched closely the way he used the bronze dragon’s body parts to climb, well, the rest of his body parts. Why were dragons so big?! Madiquel giggled, pressing the palms of her hands tight against her mouth as she let out another squeal of excited anticipation. After, she dropped her hands and took a deep breath – as if that would calm her down! – and then bounced closer.

A brilliant smile was directed up at A’tay’s teasing and she slipped her hand eagerly into his, doing her best to copy where she’d seen her friend place his feet even as the young man more or less hauled her up in way very similar to R’nya and even her memories of her father and Denath. It must be a bronzerider thing! Despite that, and the giggling as she scrambled to sit down in front of A’tay and stare around in wonder, she couldn’t help being completely startled by how strong A’tay had gotten. She didn’t think her friend would have been able to so easily lift her just a few months ago! Indeed, Madiquel was quite sure the last time she’d thrown herself on her friend’s back for a playful ride pre-Impression, he’d struggled to stay on his feet. Of course, that could also have been because she startled him out of his daydreaming, but who knew?

Wriggling so she was comfortably settled on Xyxyth’s neck, her back pressed firmly against A’tay’s front and his arm wrapped securely around her waist, Madiquel gave a joyous laugh, and flung her arms out wide even as she leaned back dramatically against A’tay. “Onwards! Majestic steed!” Of course, the moment Xyxyth actually moved, Madiquel let out a squealing whoop and quickly adjusted her seat to sit up right, wobbling, though not as much as she would have been without A’tay holding her steady.

That, right there, may have been the best moment in his life. Sure, Impressing was pretty amazing but now he was riding atop said dragon with the girl he liked leaning against him and safe in his embrace. It would have only been better if Madiquel knew about his feelings or returned them but he’d take what he could get! Even though he was trying to get over his crush, especially now that she’d be leaving for Healer Hall and who knew when they would really see each other and she’d likely find an amazing holder to fall in love and he’d love her in return because who wouldn’t love Madiquel?

He was going down a depressing spiral and focused on his wonderful moment as Xyxyth started his trek around the Bowl. “We can stay up here as long as you’d like.” Please say ‘forever’, “since Xyxyth needs to practice moving with weight on his back and it makes him stronger and it helps me work on balance and all that as well.” He was getting close to babbling from his excitement, but he couldn’t help it. He was literally a dragonrider in that moment even if he wasn’t a full-fledged one that came with graduating from weyrlinghood. He was literally riding a dragon. His dragon.

As they wandered, A’tay asked Madiquel about things she had mentioned in her letters, looking to get more information or simply just to hear her chat about things that she had an interest in. He wanted to keep the mood light and while he had been curious about how her father was doing, didn’t bring him up unless she did first, just in case. It was a good afternoon and A’tay reluctantly handed her back over to R’nya when he came to collect her for the ride home after his own business had been completed.
