2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Thistle!

Indivara looked up from where she’d been examining a blue Weyrling, at the sound of bickering. Her nostrils flared as she puffed out an irritated snarl and she felt the young bluerider shift uncomfortably but ignored him as she marched in the direction of the two young riders bitching at each other. “Oi!” Indivara’s voice cracked through the air and startled most of her class, but neither of the young men looked towards her. That just made the heavily pregnant young woman even angrier, and she stormed up to the both and delivered a slap to the back of one head, and a kick to the shins on the other. “Enough!” With two sharp jabs of her hand, Indivara indicated they were to go to opposite ends of the groups and ignore each other. She stood with her hands on her hips and irritation on her face until they did so.

Honestly!
I don’t think those two are going to stop, Venseth said mildly, wandering over from where he’d been sunning while the Weyrlings swam, bathed, were oiled and played. The two young men, both brownriders, were at war over their opinions of their female classmates, and Indivara was just about at her wits end with them. After she herself had spent almost three hours being grilled by the Weyrleader, with B’jin, Indivara had made it quite clear to her group that whether or not anyone agreed, the girls and their greens were a part of the group. So, fucking cope.

Of course, there had been quite a few snarky comments, particularly angled at Daelyne about her Impression causing the gold to suicide, and Indivara refused to let them get away with it. She’d been quick to issue out extra physical exercise to those that made snarky comments where she could hear them – but the young women weren’t exempt, either. The first (and only) time Indivara had heard the green Weyrling make a quip about one of the boys being punished for being a cunt, Indivara had sent the young woman off to complete the same tasks, alongside the young man. In all honesty, Indivara hadn’t heard anything since then, at least, not from the riders-to-be.

The dragonets were louder – benefits of not having learned volume control yet – and Indivara found a lot of them voicing their mate’s opinions. She left Venseth to quietly curb those dragonets, and while they were still months away from private speech, they were at least learning subtly when it came to not running their thoughts loudly and without consequences. If nothing else, Indivara was quite sure her group of Weyrlings would ace any exams put to them on count of back stabbing and ducking around authority. And she’d only had them for two weeks.

Wonderful.

Not bothering to answer Venseth – they’d discussed the pair at length between themselves, and Indivara had ranted about them a couple of nights ago to Val, until she’d worked herself into a frenzy and spend three hours crying brokenly because they were going to ruin her life. Indivara really hated being pregnant and all the fucking hormones.

With her hand under her (Val’s) shirt, rubbing softly at her belly where the baby was kicking like it was trying to escape, Indivara glanced around to do a quick head check, making sure each of her Weyrlings was still accounted for and doing what they were supposed to be doing. Some of them were wading in the shallows of the lake; it was a bit cool for swimming, but the dragonets were enjoying themselves and Indivara encouraged them to swim when they wanted to, knowing it was good for their muscle development. A few were sitting on the grass rubbing oil onto growing dragons, and some were lazing around chatting while the babies sunned themselves.

Deciding to wander over to the three girls, for no other reason than that they had food and Indivara had every intention of stealing it, the young woman wandered over, listening in on the tail end of their conversation before she carefully lowered herself to the ground in a space that was delightfully Indivara-sized, and stealing some of their fruit and cheese. Indivara put a piece in her mouth and chewed, looking up when she realised the girls had stopped talking. Oh, fine.

“Tell me something new you’ve learned about each of your dragons.” If they wanted to acknowledge her and expect her to teach instead of gossiping about boys or whatever while she stole their food, she would. But regardless, the question was one of Indivara’s favourites, and she’d asked it routinely of each of the Weyrlings since the day after Impression. Indivara had never wanted children, despite her tendency to get pregnant by all accounts, but she loved going home and gushing to Val about all the neat little things her Weyrlings had learned about their new lifemate in the past twenty-four hours.

The past two weeks had been unworldly for Tala. She had a dragon, something she’d been waiting for all her life. Obviously, she would think her dragon was perfect no matter what, but Niath really was perfect. An absolute darling of a dragonet, Tala couldn’t help but love her. Tala really appreciated that all she had to do this early in Weyrlinghood was care for her dragon, because she was positive she would have a hard time pulling herself away from Niath to do anything else.

She did take a moment to make sure one of her friends in Ista was making sure Ryvala was properly cared for — not that Tala didn’t trust the creche, but, well, all children should have at least one person looking out for them special. While Tala was sure Niath would adore Ryvala, it was still considered a bad idea to introduce such a young dragonet to their bonded’s baby. Conflicting hierarchy of priorities that might upset the dragon, from what Tala understood. She didn’t think Niath would be like that, but she didn’t want to risk it either. Better to wait and be sure, even if it meant Ryvala had to stay in Ista for a bit longer.

For now, she just had to spend time with Niath and the other Weyrlings. Dragonets had boundless energy, and Tala was really grateful they could play with each other and tire themselves out instead of constantly wearing out their human lifemates. At least they could talk, that was a step up from human babies.

Another thing she was grateful for was the other Weyrling girls, Tala thought as she gently scratched a lightly napping Niath as she chatted with them. Not that she couldn’t have handled being the only girl on a fighting dragon of her class, but it was nice to have some others with her. Especially Daelyne, since she took no bullshit from anyone else, and defending herself often included defending Tala (and Vessaelia, sometimes) as well. She also got to spend more time with Daelyne and Vessaelia, which was great, since Tala liked them both. Even if Vess had been rather pouty about Impressing green instead of gold. Tala didn’t understand fixating so much on how things could have gone — that wasn’t how the world was, so why try to live there instead of here? Especially when you had a darling baby dragon who was your other half.

“Hello, Indivara,” Tala greeted their Weyrlingmaster as the woman sat down with them and stole some of the food they’d brought, “Niath apparently wants to meet a horse. I have no idea where she heard about horses, but she’s rather insistent on the matter.” The little green in question purred sleepily in agreement, then stretched her legs out in front of her and rolled onto her side with a content sigh. Tala smiled at her.

Having a dragon wasn’t nearly as fun as she thought it would be. It was a lot of work! Constant feeding and oiling and a regular bath time as well. Vessaelia barely even got to spend time with A’dis, her swirl of emotions and tears too much for Tiath to handle. That didn’t make her like the very not-gold dragonet much more. It was already a struggle to deal with the fact that she didn’t end up on gold but instead got a green, and not even in Ista where more of the population would be okay with the idea. She was doing her best to ‘get over it’ like everyone, including Indivara, kept telling her. But it was hard when the last several years had been filled with the idea that she would get gold.

Tiath wasn’t neglected though. Vessaelia tried to ignore her duties, deciding the girl could fend for herself, but that lasted about an hour before guilt hit her hard and she set about oiling the itchy spot that was being complained about. How could she let anyone, even a lifemate she didn’t want, suffer? Besides, she didn’t want everyone to think she was a bad dragonrider and couldn’t handle even a green, nor did she want to be bonded to one that was covered in scars whether from neglect or accident.

That didn’t mean they spoke to each other a lot. Tiath tried, but Vessaelia didn’t always reply or sometimes she gave short answers instead of giving a lot of details. Tiath didn’t seem to like that too much, her curiosity getting the better of her at times. Other times, the green schooled Vessaelia in the way she sat or how she presented herself to others and even how she held her fork. Tiath liked to watch how others behaved and seemed to have her own idea on how a lady should behave. Sitting on the ground with her and the other girls with greens had Tiath squawking her protests about how ladies shouldn’t sit on the ground. Once she realised she wasn’t going to win the battle, she insisted that Vessaelia at least sit properly by kneeling and keeping her legs together.

When Indivara joined them, Vessaelia didn’t really notice. She was randomly grabbing snacks from the plate between them, thoughts off in another world as Tiath seemed to be sleeping for the moment, allowing for peace and quiet. It was strange how much she both loved having her missing piece in her head but hated it as much since nothing was private anymore.

When Tala spoke, she blinked back to reality, listening to what Niath liked. It was rather cute and Vessaelia smiled at the tale. She hoped Niath got to see horses soon and had fun playing with them. She glanced at Daelyne but she didn’t seem too intent on answering their Weyrlingmaster either. Sighing, Vessaelia knew she had better say something if they wanted Indivara to go away. Too bad she didn’t know what to say since knowing what Tiath liked meant speaking her to more often. That was another bit of guilt. The green had a sweet voice and she really wasn’t horrible in personality either but Vessaelia just hadn’t come around to accepting the colour of the hide yet.

“Cats. Tiath likes how soft they are,” Vessaelia went off of Tala’s animal idea and it seemed plausible that she would like cats for that very reason. Vessaelia liked them for that reason. Their fur was so soft and warm and the purring was relaxing. A noise that seemed suspiciously like a very unladylike snort came from Tiath but she didn’t say anything as it would be rude to do so.
