Why did Hatchings have to be so emotional, T’bia wondered, pouting to himself as he stared out over the sands. With the golden dragon having just indicated that the last of the eggs wasn’t going to Hatch, it was apparent that the whole ordeal was over. T’bia felt exhausted. Happiness for those who Impressed; sorrow for those who lost their life; the soft expression of reassurance when he saw his brother look his way, before going to their father. The quick look of ‘I’m fine, dad.’ When his father looked at him. And then T’bia was turning to look at M’dox. The hand holding the bronwrider’s felt numb, both from clinging to his friend, and being clung to. Leaning forward, T’bia pressed a gentle kiss to M’dox’s cheek.

It wasn’t until he pulled back that he wondered if that was too much of a public display for his friend, and T’bia’s eyebrows drew together, and he looked worriedly at M’dox. He didn’t ever want to make him uncomfortable! “Sorry,” he murmured, blinking before smiling softly. “Come and meet Rhaedalyn,” his expression brightened as he spoke the goldrider’s name. She was such a wonderful lady, and T’bia was so glad R’nd had bullied him into being friends with the woman. He giggled at the thought. “She’s really lovely!” He promised, giving M’dox’s hand a squeeze before dragging the brownrider towards the woman in question, weaving through the people who were tracking all over the sands, and the few dragons who were crowding the Weyrlings. Busy bodies!

T’bia could hear Indivara issuing commands, berating someone, and urging the Weyrlings to start making their way towards the barracks. T’bia was insanely great full he hadn’t been in her class, either as a fellow student or as one of her students. Indivara was scary! Glancing at M’dox with wide eyes, he dragged his friend past the group without catching anyone’s eye or interest, and quickly found themselves safely in the area where Jycenth said Rhaedalyn had been. T’bia paused, looking around with a comical expression of concentration on his face, before he spotted the woman, her thick curly hair hairs to miss and her smile bright despite the emotional turmoil of the Hatcihng.

“Come on!” He grinned at M’dox and returned to dragging the brownrider towards the goldrider, lifting his free hand to wave erratically at Rhaedalyn. Jycenth had passed word to Rhaedalyn that his young rider was coming over to say hi, and T’bia beamed when Rhaedalyn waved back. Dropping M’dox’s hand, T’bia bounced the last few feet of distance between himself and Rheadalyn, and threw himself at her, hugging her tightly and pressing a kiss to her cheek. “Hi!” It was easy to forget how sad he was at the lives lost – both the baby dragon and the candidates – when confronted with one of his few friends. “This is M’dox! Of brown Riquarth!” And he reached over to grab the brownrider, and thrust him forward a couple of steps, and very nearly into Rheadalyn. “Rhaedalyn! Of Aradissicath!” He chirped, giving M’dox’s hand a squeeze.

M’dox was so tired; emotionally, from all the tragedy, but also physically considering the sun was almost rising and the Hatching had taken all night. Everything felt a little blurry, tinged with the tiredness he felt. The most real thing was the way his hand hurt a little, somewhat crushed and somewhat stiff. He didn’t think he’d let go of T’bia’s hand in several hours — he still didn’t want to let go. M’dox focused on their hands, because it reminded him everything was real and he was awake. The kiss on his cheek was unexpected, and M’dox startled a little.

It wasn’t that he didn’t like when T’bia did stuff like that! He did! He just wasn’t expecting it and M’dox still half expected his father to materialize and tell him off. Where he grew up, you were only supposed to kiss someone in public if you were married. Which obviously didn’t apply in the Weyrs — M’dox had seen lots of people who definitely weren’t married kissing at various points throughout the Hatching — but it was still hard to shake that immediate fear that you were doing something wrong. But that was a him problem, and M’dox hated that T’bia felt bad when he realized he was being affectionate in public because it wasn’t T’bia’s fault.

He was about to say something (he hadn’t decided what yet, but something) when T’bia decided to introduce him to Rhaedalyn, who unless M’dox was very much mistaken, was the Fort Weyrwoman. M’dox’s eyes went wide. He’d never actually properly met a goldrider before; his Weyrling class hadn’t had a gold, and it’s not like M’dox really met many people. T’bia had talked about Rhaedalyn before, and M’dox was sure she was just as lovely as the bluerider said, but he was still nervous at the prospect of meeting her. What if she didn’t like him?

Worrying the entire way, M’dox let T’bia lead him through all the people. He was perfectly happy to avoid Indivara and the weyrlings. M’dox hadn’t forgotten his last interaction with the lady bluerider and he had less than zero desire to repeat the experience. Thankfully, they safely made it to Rhaedalyn and didn't have to speak to anyone else. When T’bia let go of his hand to greet the goldrider, M’dox felt the absence intensely. T’bia had been holding his hand for so long now it felt weird that it was gone.

Thankfully, T’bia quickly took his hand again, but he also shoved him forward to talk to a very pretty goldrider who was also a very important dragonrider and M’dox wasn’t entirely sure he liked the exchange. He gave Rhaedalyn a hesitant wave with his free hand as he almost stumbled into her. By some miracle he didn’t fall on top of her — what an awful first impression that would make! — and M’dox very quickly took a step or two back to give Rhaedalyn enough personal space. She didn’t know him, so he wanted to stay a respectful distance away.

“Hi,” he said quietly, taking another step closer to T’bia as if the bluerider could protect him. Not that Rhaedalyn was dangerous, but she would be judging him, wouldn’t she? What if she didn’t like him? This was a bad, bad idea.

Despite the horrors of the Hatching, Rhaedalyn was doing her best to smile and focus on the positives. Like those that Impressed. It was their special day and their bond would forever be overshadowed by the tragedies caused by an angry gold with no mate of her own. She already heard the whispers that poor Daelyne was to blame for Impressing to a green and she hated it. So she was working her way over to the Weyrlings to congratulate each of them, but to especially show her support to the female greenriders. R’nya didn’t want girls Standing for anything other than gold, but even he had to see the positive point that three greens lived because of those girls.

She kept getting waylaid by others that wanted to speak with her, though she didn’t mind. It was still odd that so many people knew who she was and wanted some of her time when she had always seen herself as a failure before being brought to Katila and even after. She supposed it was the rank and how people thought she might have some sway over R’nya and could help champion their cause, but most people tonight were just greeting her.

When Jycenth bespoke her, Rhaedalyn nearly jumped out of her skin. The charming blue had never spoken to her before and she hadn’t been expecting it now. It was already weird not having Aradissicath so tightly entwined with her own thoughts while she was away from her, but then having another dragon pop in really pointed out what was missing. She could still sense her dragon but it wasn’t as strong as when they were near and after a moment of shock, Rhaedalyn welcomed the blue’s presence and his words even more. She’d forgotten she had wanted Madiquel to meet T’bia! She glanced around for the girl and saw her still fretting over Quinvalis which was where R’nya was escorting the boy’s mother and sister. He couldn’t bring them home before they saw for themselves he was fine.

She smiled when T’bia was spotted and waved back just as enthusiastically and giggled as she pulled him in for a hug. She adored the bluerider. R’nd was a good friend to them both and he knew people well enough to know when he could and should toss them together. She had no doubt that he never considered anyone else for either of them when he felt they both needed a friend other than him. At the time, she had been a bit leery of people, especially blueriders, thanks to Z’ia and T’bia was shy and people liked to tease him for innocent questions he once asked. They were rather perfect for each other and now she mourned the lack of visits from the young rider. According to R’nd, it was because their sweet friend had a boyfriend and seeing him holding hands with M’dox of brown Riquarth, Rhaedalyn had a suspicion she knew who that boyfriend was.

She smiled brightly as the brownrider shyly greeted her. Was he afraid of her because of her rank or was he always nervous when meeting new people? Either way, Rhaedalyn hoped he’d soon be at ease with her. She would hate to scare T’bia’s boyfriend! “Hi, M’dox. It’s lovely to meet you! I’ve heard a bit about you. R’nd Searched you, correct? He’s very proud of you, and not just for you Impressing.” It was hard to anger R’nd and he liked practically everyone but she also knew he kept an eye on those he Searched and did his best to befriend them and mentor them where he could. A recent visit had him confessing how happy he was that T’bia and M’dox hit it off so well but was a bit worried about the new level of teasing that could come of the relationship thanks to the infamous question about blues flying browns.

“And T’bia!” She pouted playfully at him, letting him know he was in trouble, but only on a teasing level as she couldn’t ever be upset over such a trivial thing. “Alyren and Varlea miss you. You haven’t stopped by in so long. You could meet the twins now as well! I’ve finally convinced R’nya that they’re more than old enough to have more visitors now.” He was so protective of his girls and it made Rhaedalyn love him even more but also want to smack him until he gave them all some breathing room. She feared when they were all old enough to start sneaking out with lovers.

Everything Rhaedalyn said was very nice but M’dox’s eyes widened in concern nonetheless. R’nd talked about him? To other people? R’nd thought about him enough to talk about him with other people. R’nd said he was proud of M’dox to other people? Including the Fort Weyrwoman! Oh, Faranth, M’dox had no idea how to process any of that.

Instead, he just nodded and smiled, managing to get out a ‘nice to meet you too,’ before he lost the ability to speak and attempted to hide behind T’bia. Rhaedalyn was T’bia’s friend, and he was just there to be introduced. He’d been introduced, and now M’dox was perfectly happy to hang back and let T’bia talk to the goldrider about whatever they wanted. Visiting Rhaedalyn’s children, it sounded like? M’dox was pretty sure T’bia had mentioned the girls before at some point. He liked hearing T’bia talk about things in his life, even if the bluerider sometimes left out some context and M’dox wasn’t always entirely sure of all the details of a story. Rhaedalyn and her daughters showed up in the stories periodically, and it was actually nice to have a face to put to Rhaedalyn’s name; he had seen her before, but only from a distance, and it was hard for him to really picture someone’s face when he hadn’t seen it up close. Maybe it was only fair she knew things about him, since M’dox had heard random things about her from T’bia. The idea was still anxiety inducing, and M’dox pressed closer to T’bia — it just felt safer, somehow — and tried to focus on the conversation he wasn’t participating in instead of what negative things Rhaedalyn might know about him.

T’bia turned to stare at M’dox, his eyes wide. “R’nd Searched you?” If he had previously known this fact, it was lost in the emotional tidal wave that the entire event had brought, and he gawked at M’dox for several moments before grinning. “R’nd is the best!” Because of course R’nd Searched someone as amazing as M’dox who would be wonderful and gorgeous and amazing and a brownrider – and T’bia flushed slightly but not that much because he hadn’t actually said any of that out loud, just thought it, and honestly, that was pretty much a damned miracle!

At the sound of his name from Rhaedalyn’s lips, T’bia turned from grinning at M’dox like an idiot to flash that same grin at Rhaedalyn, before he realised he was in (playful) trouble. T’bia pouted and sulked as he looked away, shuffling anxiously. “I’m sorry!” He was genuine in his apology, as he looked up, eyebrows drawn together and expression upset. He certainly hadn’t meant to stay away for so long! Rhaedalyn was such a good friend and her little girls were wonderful and he had even gotten over his anxiety of one of them being the spawn of Indivara, several Turns ago. Having two little sisters – even though the youngest was nine now, so really not that little anymore! – T’bia had easily fallen into interacting with the little girls.

“We’ll bring them presents, to make up for it,” he said, grinning impishly because he knew Rhaedalyn didn’t expect that of him (and he was completely oblivious to the way he invited M’dox along), and the girls – well, actually, they would. They were young enough to demand presents without shame and T’bia usually brought them something, anyway, even if it was just a treat he’d stolen from C’dhin. “Would they like a winter dress each?” Fort got really cold, didn’t it? T’bia had a feeling it did, but he could be mixing that up with his memories of Telgar. Who knew? “We found a really nice dress shop!” He had fond memories of his first adventure into Telgar Hold with M’dox, and the shop had become a favourite haunt of theirs, when they could find the time to go.

“M’dox is really good at finding the prettiest ones!” He turned to smile adoringly at M’dox before getting swept up in the last comment Rhaedalyn had made before he’d just about started talking over the top of her. He was listening, though! He knew what she’d said! “R’nya is a good dad,” T’bia said, incredibly serious, his eyebrows drawn together and expression very insistent that Rhaedalyn know that he thought as much about her mate, because it was important! Growing up with a good father, T’bia knew that a good dad definitely doted on his partner (like his had T’bia’s mother) and his children (again, like T’bia’s father had). It was mother’s he wasn’t sure about, but he knew Rhaedalyn was a good mother, because she was Rhaedalyn and she couldn’t possibly be bad at it!

“Do they have a favourite colour this week?” He asked, dashing back to the topic of getting dresses for the girls. He knew from his sister’s that things like favourite colours and best friends and favourite foods changed frequently, but he also knew they were quite likely to have a regular favourite.

Rhaedalyn was still smiling at M’dox, not offended by the way he seemed to hide from her. Actually, she really didn’t know he was doing that since she was hardly seen as threatening and she didn’t think her title made her intimidating or worthy of shying away from. She just viewed the boys as being an adorable couple, constantly holding hands and needing to be near each other. It was rather romantic and Rhaedalyn’s thoughts were close to drifting off into fantasy land to think back on her and R’nya’s relationship and other sweet couples, like B’jin and R’nd. Thankfully, T’bia brought her back to the present as he mentioned a dress shop and gifts.

“Don’t you dare bring them gifts! You know you don’t have to and if you do, you’ll be as bad as their father is and soon you’ll be known as their favourite uncle, which R’nd will be sad to lose the title of, I’m sure.” She giggled at the idea of a pouting R’nd when he heard his protégé had upstaged him and won over the hearts of the little girls. R’nd may not have known he was a father to several children for most of their lives, but he was a quick learner--especially with children that he could pass back to the actual parents—and knew the way to spoiling the little ladies. Although she also believed her girls would adopt any of the older men as uncles if they kept bringing them gifts and goodies and she pretended to consider the idea further, a finger pressed to her chin as she eyed up T’bia. “Hmm. Yes, between Uncle Randy and Uncle Tibs, their father is going to have to work harder to keep their affection.”

She was smiling, enjoying the playful banter as she teased the young bluerider. She felt comfortable enough with him now to do such things. Once, she would have been cautious with her words, not wanting to upset him because he thought she was being mean all because of a misunderstanding. Sometimes it still seemed like it happened but T’bia was also quick to figure out what she actually meant or her smile made it clear she meant no harm. She hated when she upset him and a glance at M’dox confirmed she’d have to be careful with him as well. She really needed to watch what she said before saying it, knowing her skill at blurting things out the wrong way when she was flustered or the other person didn’t know her that well.

“A dress shop?” Her attention stayed on M’dox, wanting to draw him back into the conversation, hoping to make him feel more at ease and not like he wasn’t wanted. There had been many times in the past where she felt like a tag along when with the other Golden Girls, usually when a boy was around, hoping to grab their attention. Even when it was R’nya, she always felt like he’d rather spend the time alone with the other girl or two she was with. “Do you know if they make hats and mittens as well? I’d like to take the older girls to play in the snow this coming season and they need the proper clothing for it. As to colours… Alyren currently favours blue and Varlea is more earthy tones.” It never occurred to her to ask why M’dox was so good at finding the prettiest dresses, assuming he had girls he liked to shop for. R’nya was the same way and Rhaedalyn knew if she let him, he’d give every dress away after it was worn once, finding them no longer good enough for his daughters. He was sometimes harder to parent than their daughters were.

M’dox couldn’t help blushing when T’bia looked at him. He’d thought R’nd having Searched him had come up before, but maybe it hadn’t? It was totally believable that M’dox had had an entire conversation with T’bia in his head and forgotten it hadn’t actually happened. But T’bia mentioned R’nd rather often, M’dox was sure he’d mentioned it… the brownrider distracted himself trying to remember when they’d talked about him being Searched, but he tuned back in when T’bia seemed to volunteer the two of them to visit Rhaedalyn’s children. As in, included M’dox in the plans.

The comment about him being good at finding pretty dresses only had M’dox’s panic rising. Rhaedalyn would just take that as he had female relatives or friends he bought things for, right? Which he did, he had bought several things for his mother, sister, and nieces, but he hadn’t actually given any of the gifts to their recipients. He should probably get around to actually visiting them, which he hadn’t done since he Impressed (he was sure he had a few new nieces and nephews!), which he felt bad about, but it was complicated. And he’d been busy!

He did have to smile at ‘Uncle Randy and Uncle Tibs’ because they were just such cute nicknames. Kids not being able to say long words and names was adorable. With his own younger relatives he’d been Maddy or Mox, which he’d found endearing. He got distracted again, thinking about his siblings’ children, when Rhaedalyn addressed him directly and M’dox was brought crashing back to the current conversation.

“Uh, yeah, it has that kind of thing. It’s not a dress shop, technically, I think, they just have a lot of them. But they have winter clothes too, I remember, scarves and gloves at least, probably hats and mittens as well,” M’dox managed to stumble through the answer to Rhaedalyn’s question. He hadn’t looked specifically for hats or mittens, but he and T’bia had gotten scarves there, and he’d considered buying his younger brother’s wife some gloves there. If they had one type of warm clothing, they probably had others, right? They could at least look there. M’dox was already including himself in the expedition, unconsciously agreeing to T’bia’s unintentional invitation to visit Rhaedalyn’s daughters with him.

T’bia giggled, the sound uncharacteristically naughty at the idea of upstaging R’nd and stealing the prime position of ‘favourite uncle’ of the two little girls – well, four technically, but the babies were just that and it would be a while before they had favourites of anything! T’bia giggled again at making R’nya work to win his daughters back from their blueriding ‘uncles’. T’bia knew enough about the girls, Rhaedalyn, and R’nya to know he could shower the children in relentless gifts, and they’d never stop idolising their father. The very idea was funny, which was why he giggled.

When M’dox was questioned and took to answering, T’bia turned to smile gently at his friend, his eyebrows drawing together after a moment when he realised, by M’dox’s stumbling words, that he was uncomfortable with Rhaedalyn, and T’bia barely contained his pout. He wasn’t upset with M’dox, but rather, upset with himself. He hadn’t thought at all about how M’dox would respond to meeting his friend, he’d just been so excited for them to meet! Worrying his bottom lip with his teeth, T’bia made Jycenth promise to remind him to apologise to M’dox when they went back to one of their weyrs. He didn’t want to forget, and knew he would, because making sure M’dox knew he was sorry was important, especially since T’bia hadn’t meant to make him uncomfortable!

T’bia wished sadly he could give M’dox a kiss, because he really wanted to, to make sure the brownrider knew how sorry he was in a way that wouldn’t show Rhaedalyn (or anyone else within sight) that he was apologising. But he knew how timid M’dox was about public displays, and that broke T’bia’s heart. He hadn’t been courageous enough (yet? Ever?) to ask M’dox why he was so reserved – he had a feeling it was because M’dox was hold bred, but a lot of the new riders came from Holds, and they weren’t all as shy as M’dox, so T’bia felt it must be something more. Part of it – which he knew and accepted – was simply who M’dox was. But… He just had a feeling there was more to it than that.

“I bet they do!” T’bia said cheerfully, giving M’dox’s hand a squeeze and looking at him with gentle adoration before shifting his attention to Rhaedalyn, his expression morphing into what was (for T’bia) a particularly naughty expression. “Maybe we should get them a whole outfit!” He said slyly, giving M’dox’s hand a gentle squeeze and biting back a giggle as he watched Rhaedalyn’s face. “Dresses and stockings and scarves and mitts and boots, and a nice cape!” He giggled, unable to keep up the façade of a straight face. T’bia rarely spent the Marks he was allocated, so the prospect of blowing a fortune on the little girls – mostly because he wanted to, but maybe a tiny bit to cheekily upstage R’nd, too – was of no concern to T’bia and the idea of the shopping trip (with M’dox no less!) appealed to T’bia a great deal.

Rhaedalyn only sighed with a smile as T’bia rambled off all the items he would get the girls. She knew there was no talking him out of it now, unless she wanted to be stern and really force the issue, but she didn’t want that. T’bia was an absolute sweetheart and she would never be mean or forceful with a friend, especially over something trivial like clothes. She was giggling by the end of his list and only slightly worried what this would start. R’nd would try to top it and then R’nya would most certainly want to spoil the girls even more. Her brood was in for a very bountiful turn-end.

“Well, if you have the time and happen to find yourself at the shop and see something they would like, then I won’t stop you. But you know you don’t need gifts every time you visit. Same goes for you, M’dox,” Rhaedalyn looked at the brownrider, worried that he was still afraid of her or just simply nervous about the entire conversation. She didn’t want to scare him into complete silence by constantly showing him attention but she also didn’t want him to feel left out or encroaching on the conversation.

“As T’bia’s boyfriend, I expect you to come along with him sometimes. I know I’d be happy for the extra company as well.” Rhaedalyn smiled sweetly at M’dox, not at all considering that maybe the boys weren’t dating given how they held hands and looked at each other. She may have had some missteps herself along the way, but Rhaedalyn felt she was an expert when it came to love and romance and these two boys were well on their way to being a cute mated couple.

“I wanted to introduce Madiquel to you,” Rhaedalyn turned her attention back to T’bia as the thought of young love reminded her about the girl. She glanced behind her to where the Healers were set up and saw Madiquel still with Quinvalis, though she stood a bit further off now that his mother and sister were there fussing over him. Rhaedalyn gave it another moment, hoping Madiquel would look up, but she didn’t. She missed not having Aradissicath there with her, if only so the dragon could make herself useful and ask Madiquel to come join them. At least she had firelizards still! Muffin was likely off getting into trouble and she could see Whisper hovering around R’nya like she often did. That left Rumour and with a little thought sent out to him, the blue appeared. She held out her hands for him to land on and he received a kiss to the top of his head in greeting before being asked to get Madiquel over here, if he could.

“She’s been such a blessing since the twins were born. She’s sweet and kind and if you’re going to promise to visit more, you’ll see her around a lot as well.” Rhaedalyn was also a bit worried that Jajojin scared people away from his daughter, leaving her with a short list of friends. He was extremely protective of her which led to her being a bit sheltered. T’bia and M’dox would be nice friends for her to have with the same sort of personality.

Quietly M’dox leaned into T’bia and squeezed his hand back, smiling at T’bia’s enthusiasm to get absolutely everything a person could possibly wear for his friend’s daughters. He really did go all out with everything, didn’t he? M’dox thought it was endearing. Of course, he startled again when Rhaedalyn spoke to him, looking at her wide-eyed at the idea he might bring her children presents too. Well, he would, if T’bia wanted help choosing them. M’dox was an expert at buying presents for little girls. Well, at the buying part, anyway. Considering he’s never actually given any of the ones he’d bought to their intended recipients he couldn’t be sure he was good at it, but his gifts to his nieces that he’d made or found back before being Searched had been hits. Though it was hard to disappoint a three turn old girl with a gift, no matter how bad it might have been.

And then Rhaedalyn called him T’bia’s boyfriend and M’dox just about lost his ability to think. T’bia’s boyfriend. Was he? They hadn’t talked about it, hadn’t named anything. He glanced at T’bia, wanting to see how the bluerider reacted to the phrase — would he protest? Agree with it? Were they? Did he want to be? M’dox was pretty sure he did. But then he looked back at Rhaedalyn and the familiar fear rose, crawling up his throat as it always did. Rhaedalyn, someone M’dox didn’t know, thought he and T’bia were dating. Which, well, they were holding hands. In public. Which was a thing people who were boyfriends did, sometimes. Oh, Faranth.

M’dox didn’t hear a word Rhaedalyn said about Madiquel, the words flowing right past him as he focused more on his own thoughts. He was trying so hard not to panic. Not in front of T’bia’s friend, who M’dox wanted to like him. Or in front of T’bia! Because T’bia would blame himself, and that wasn’t it at all. It was M’dox’s own fault he was afraid. M’dox curled in closer to T’bia, worrying about how the bluerider might respond but wanting to be very clear that he wasn’t upset with T’bia, no matter what. He even tried his best to focus back in on whatever Rhaedalyn was saying. Who were they talking about?

T’bia positively beamed when Rhaedalyn gave in to his babbling, blue eyes bright with mischief; oh he was going to have so much fun shopping for the little girls, and he was sure that M’dox would enjoy the trip too! His friend seemed to really enjoy shopping, though sometimes T’bia caught the way he seemed to faulter – T’bia knew that expression well; it was when everything started clashing… thoughts and feelings and beliefs and… T’bia turned to look at M’dox, and smiled softly.

Honestly, T’bia might not have processed the word ‘boyfriend’ if he hadn’t been looking at M’dox at the time, or seen the way the brownrider seemed to freeze up and panic for a moment. T’bia himself waged an internal war for a moment, before giving in to the need and pressing a gentle kiss to M’dox’s cheek. That wasn’t too much for his friend was it? He didn’t want to make M’dox uncomfortable with his public displays because he knew M’dox was worried about… well, he wasn’t sure? T’bia knew no one would care. Sure, there were some bullies around that would make snide remarks if they were in the mood, but T’bia couldn’t have dreamed up the reason M’dox was truly uncomfortable with the displays.

When M’dox crept a bit closer, T’bia shifted them slightly, drawing M’dox in front of him and wrapping his arms gently around the brownrider’s waist, and resting his chin gently on M’dox’s shoulder. Their height difference wasn’t great, but T’bia found it to be a comfortable way to stand and he smiled gently before whispering quietly, when Rhaedalyn was busy scanning for someone in the crowd. “I love you,” T’bia breathed, giving M’dox a gentle squeeze before loosening his grip; he didn’t want M’dox to feel trapped. T’bia hated feeling trapped, so he’d never want to do that to someone he loved as dearly as M’dox.

T’bia offered a shy smile to the girl that joined them, looking curiously at himself and M’dox as she came to a stop close beside Rhaedalyn. “Morning,” T’bia said shyly, spending a lot more time looking down at the ground than at the teenager, fiddling anxiously with a stray thread on the hem of M’dox’s shirt.

Madiquel fussed over Quinvalis until he began working to distract them both with stories, and she did her best to listen quietly, though she clung to one of his hands in both of hers. She watched the Hatching of more dragonets with interest, but her attention was mostly on her friend. She’d realised when he asked if they could sit down that she’d probably hurt him, and he hadn’t said anything, and that worried her. Madiquel pouted to herself, before getting swept up in his topic of choice again when the last of the Impressions had been made.

Madiquel was reluctant to leave Quinvalis, regardless of his encouragement that she should go and find Rhaedalyn, and she fretted just a bit away from him and the Healers, watching seriously as he was examined and not noticing when his family joined him; she was too busy feeling guilty about hurting him when it became apparent that there was damage to his ribs (it was hard to miss the way he flinched when the Healer poked at him).

She was about to go back to them, as the Healers were wrapping Quinvalis’ ribs, when Rhaedalyn’s little blue Rumour appeared from between and scolded her cheerfully. Madiquel turned, gazing around until she spotted Rhaedalyn talking to two riders. With Rumour fluttering around her head, Madiquel made her way across the sands, realising as she went that Clover hadn’t come back yet from her latest trip to visit Ayontay; probably the pair of them had fallen asleep – which reminded Madiquel how late it was (or early?) and she hid a yawn behind her hand as she joined Rhaedalyn, looking curiously at the two men.

“Hello,” she replied softly to the taller one, who refused to meet her faze. Her expression brightened a little, curiosity boiling up as she glanced from the two men, to Rhaedalyn, and back again. “I’m Madiquel,” she offered gently. When it became apparent that neither of them were going to introduce themselves (they were so shy! Madiquel wanted to giggle but she was afraid of upsetting them. She didn’t want them to think she was making fun of them! They were just so precious!) she glanced at Rhaedalyn with her eyebrows drawn together.

“Quinvalis will be okay,” she offered, hoping a little bit of casual conversation that wasn’t focused on them would relax Rhaedalyn’s friends. “He probably won’t be picking up any of the children for a little while.” Or shouldn’t; she didn’t know a lot a bout healing (yet!) but she was a Weyrbrat – Madiquel had seen her share of people with damaged ribs before, and had bruised her own on several occasions growing up, usually falling from places she shouldn’t have been in. Or on. Or whatever.
