Month 05, 741 AL

North: Late Spring | South: Late Autumn
9.9 C to 18.4 C | 13.7 C to 24.5 C

Ista is heating up swiftly, and preparing for a rough summer - hopefully nothing like the one from a couple turns before with the wildfires! The rest of Northern Pern is warming upsomewhat slower, but with no less gusto as summer begins to creep into the sky, keeping the sun awake longer, warming the ledges of the weyrs. Rainstorms are sporadic, but keep the world well watered, despite the heat of the days.

The Red Star can be seen by those who choose to see it, causing no shortage of whispers that Thread will return - and just as much dismissal from those who do not believe. After all, it's been so long, surely it is no longer a threat! Weyrleaders are, regardless, beginning to put together wings in their Weyrs, if only to keep troublesome and bored riders busy.

Month 12, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Winter -3 - 2 C | 26 - 35 F
Fort is already home to snowfalls, though early in the month they fade away when the sun rises. As the month progresses, more snow stays on the ground, ending up with several feet of snow before the month is over. The areas around homes and populations has the snow shoveled away or trodden down. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove some danger and are routinely removed.

Ista Boundaries:
Winter, 9 - 21 C | 48 - 69 F
Generally warm enough to go about without a jacket on, Ista has low humidity but high chance of rain, generally in the form of vicious afternoon thunderstorms. The storms wash away any bite of heat the day had, and leave it feeling fresh for the night. The days are short, but grow bright quickly and the afternoons seem to be particularly short when heavy thunderstorms roll in and cover the sky.

Telgar Boundaries:
Winter, -5 - 0 C | 23 - 32 F
Bitterly cold, with icy winds constantly flowing down from the mountains. Freezing rain is almost constant; the sky always a murky grey and the ground slippery with slushy refrozen ice. The days are extremely short, with the nights dropping a good number below the daily average. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove a major danger, and are checked upon every day, with anything bigger than a fist being removed.

Month 07, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Summer 27 - 38 C | 80 - 100 F
Light breezes down from the mountains tot he North keep the temperature comfortable, even when the sun can bake an egg on the edge of a weyr. Sunburn is common.

Ista Boundaries:
Summer, 34 - 43 C | 93 - 110 F
A very dry, dusty heat. Little to no rain, causing more than some to worry about the drought not breaking and the rest of the Isle being at risk of fires. Many seek the depths of weyr, hold or hall during the midday and early afternoon heat.

Telgar Boundaries:
Summer, 26 - 35 C | 79 - 95 F
Muggy, sticky and generally just plain humid. Thunder storms are regular occurances, often happening in the early afternoon or evening, with heavy rainfall before drying off sometime in the night. Mornings are usually crisp, but warm up swiftly.

Month 04, 740 AL
North: Early Spring | South: Early Autumn
−1.9 C to 4.7 C | 20.0 C to 29.0

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself naturally warmer, (~10C / 50) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Katila is beginning to cool down to more reasonable temperature, but is no less muggy and uncomfortable to those who are not used to the seasons. It is still a good place to escape to when seeking a warm day or a nice swim at the lake, though.

Month 12, 739 AL
North: Early Winter| South: Early Summer
-3.1 to 2.1 C | 20.4 C to 29.4 C

Winter has come slowly to the Northern lands of Pern, with more rain and cold winds than snow. As the month progresses, more and more snow will fall, with frequent blizzard-like storms towards the very end of the month. Telgar and Fort will in particular become burried under mountains of snow, while Ista is sunjected to frequent icy rainstorms, and heavy winds coming in from across the ocean.

13.4 to 21.0 C | 13.8 C to 25.6 C

Following the disastrous fires (sometime in around the 28th of Month 08), Ista Isle has found itself suddenly in the midst of constant rain; not enough to flood, but a steady, dreary downfall that seems to only take a time out for a couple of hours here and there, before coming back again. Its cast the entire sooty Isle into a sombre and depressed mood. Alongside the rain, the weather is muggy and while not hot, is not particularly cool, either.

The rest of Northern Pern is getting their usual weather, though they, too, have been called to action following the wildfires that savaged Ista. Many individuals who called Ista Island home have been relocated not just to Ista Weyr, Ista Hold or Sea Cliff Hold, but also to other areas of Pern, whether with family or friends.

Month 08, 739 AL
North: Late Summer | South: Late Winter
17.4 to 25.5 C | 10.8 C to 23.2 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm - 37 to 45 C - has resulted in an incredibly dry summer, with little to no rain. This was climaxed by a dry thunderstorm, the results of which caused three fires to start across the Island on the 24.07.739 in the early morning hours. While the results of this are yet to be played out, the events will no doubt leave more than just the scarring of the land.

Month 07, 739 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter
18.0 to 26.6 C | 10.2 C to 21.9 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm, with average weather being in the 37 to 45 C range, making it now a more than slightly undesirable escape for the rest of the Northern population from the more enjoyable early summer weather. There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind. Ista's limited farmlands and fields are dry and dusty, with golden straw instead of grass where there is any growth at all.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Northern areas are still getting a lot of evening rain and the occasional thunderstorms, which cools down the populus and allows them to sleep easily without sweating their brains out like the Istans.

There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind.

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself uncommonly warm (~12C / 53.6) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Month 11, 738 AL
North: Late Autumn | South: Late Spring

Autumn is coming to an end, with the days slowly becoming shorter still, with early nights and late mornings. The temperature is getting very cool, with jackets being more required, but it has yet to actually snow. Despite this, it is often raining and miserable.

The Southern contient is in full bloom, with flowers coming to life in the grasses and on the trees. The skies are bright blue with fluffy clouds, and occassional sunshowers bringing a dampness to the day. The nights are still crisp, but not cold. The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 10, 738 AL
North: Mid Autumn | South: Mid Spring

Autumn is in full tilt, with the leaves a shocking array of orange and red, and more of them on the ground than on the trees. The skies are often a clear and crisp blue, with a cool breeze flowing, shifting the leaves and sending them scattering. Rain is not common, but when it does roll in the skies are dark like night come early, and thunderstorms are not uncommon, though they don't last for long and the amount of rain that falls isn't too heavy.

The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 09, 738 AL
North: Start Autumn | South: Start Spring

Nothern regions are entering into Autumn, with the trees beginning to change to their reds and oranges, while the air is beginning to feel more crips. There are still more warm days than cool, and the nights are mostly warm enough for light bedding still. Rain has faded away and most days are clear and bright.

The Southern contient finds itself heading into spring, with rain and flowers vying for attention. The ground is often muddy and squishy, while the skies are either bright and blue, or overcast wtih fluffy clouds.

Month 08, 738 AL
North: End Summer | South: End Winter

Summer is winding to an end in the Northern hemisphere, with the weather slowly cooling and the trees beginning to turn their leaves. The days are still long and bright, but the sun is beginning to lose some of its strength.

The coastal Weyrs are falling victim to coastal storms, strong winds and heavy rains with thunder and lightening.

The more inbound Weyrs and Holds find themselves drier, not getting nearly as much rain or storms, they find themselves on the end of a long drought.

Month 07, 738 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter

Summer is in full spring in the Nothern hemisphere, with the bulk of each day being unbearbly hot, followed by vicious thunderstorms and heavy humidity in the evenings and at night.

The coastal areas are experiencing monsoon like weather, and spend a lot of their time locked away in Hold, Hall or Weyr.

The more inner locations find themselves faced with more dry heat during the day, and horrible humidity in the evening and at night while the thunderstorms rage.

ITS AN UPDATE! HOORAH!

I'm not dead, my loves! This month's Event is 'Close Call!' - have fun! Stamps will be uploaded and on display in our Discord chatroom.

There is a topic here for discussion about Pernese religions and belief systems, including in and out of Weyr opinions (variably and as a whole) in regards to delicate matters, such as birth, death, and the afterlife. Also, ghosts anyone? Now I'm imagining a giant arse dragon ghost....

Healer Hall is accepting Gold Candidates (just from Fort, for now) and R'nya will soon be discussing with his Weyrwoman Rhaedalyn the merits of bringing in additional female candidates.... on the condition they are approved for Healer Apprenticeship...

Thallyath, Casa's little gold dragon, will be taking to the skies for her maiden flight in the first week of April (IC date will be 740-04-01) and while a mate is already decided, this clutch will be PC and more candidates are ALWAYS welcome, whether you want them to Impress this round --- or not!

September 2018

Spring is here! ... In Australia, anyway!

This month’s riveting event is ‘Seas of Fun’, in honour of International Pirate’s Day! After all the drama with the fires, we expect that taking to the sea (or lake, river, pond, etc) would be a very relaxing way to spend some downtime for many dragonriders and Holderfolk alike!

In preparation for October, the even is “Memories of the Past”, which we hope will be a fun way to explore your character’s past, either in solo posts or threads, as inner monolog or as back posting! How you choose to partake is entirely up to you!

October will also see our next PC HATCHING! In order to have your Candidate qualify for Impression, they must have no less than 20 posts! There are lots of characters floating around who would be more than happy to help your Candidate breech that count! Don’t forget to also UPDATE YOUR APPLICATIONS where applicable, or make sure it is submitted at all! We can’t Impress your character if we don’t know what they should be getting!

As always, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

If you haven't already, please drop by the Dragonrider Weyr Allocations thread, and let us know where your dragonriders call home. We are hoping to set up Wings across the three PC Weyrs over the next month or so, and your assistance is much appreciated! As a result, we will be looking for Wingleaders, Wingseconds, and of course Candidates for the clutches we have scheduled for this year!

August 2018

ITS AUGUST! Do you know what that means? It means its less than 4 months until Christmas! OMG.

Okay. So moving on! This month sees us (hopefully) wrapping up the Camp Kink event! Who doesn’t love an abundance of young adults exploring their sexuality without restraint? Its been a hell of a fun ride (haha get it?) so far! Can’t wait to see what the grapevine makes of it when words gets out … haha!

On a more serious note, this month will see us engaging in the Istan Wildfires! This event is a free for all! Feel free to have your characters interact with the event in any way you feel is suitable! There is a lot of room here for personal dramas, trouble making, hero worshiping, etcetera! We really want to see how characters interact with, and dictate, the outcome of the event!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

July 2018

July was July-y.

June 2018

Welcome to the new month! Like always, I'm slack in getting the update up and running, but here it is! This month we have the event 'Summer Fling' - [Link] - which is turning out to be all kinds of entertaining already! Remember, it doesn't have to include smut! It could be an innocent date with some - *gasp* - hand holding!

This month also saw Gold Bedith of Mulrissa take to the skies! She was won by young Syrendryth of T'ryn! Congrats, and may your Hatching be less dramatic than the last one! The Hatching will take place in October so you have a lot of time to get Candidates created, approved, and posting up a storm!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

April 2018

Well, it’s halfway through the month which shows you how awful I am at keeping this stuff up to date, haha. Due to my slackness, there is no event this month, but the month of May will be hosting ’Lost Belongings’ wherein characters should find something they – or someone else – lost.

In the meantime, gold Okalinath of Kahleena has taken to the skies! You can find her Flight thread taking place on the 4th, here Currently, there is no planned winner, so be sure to throw your bronzes and browns her way! They do not need to be natives to Telgar Weyr to participate!

March 2018

Welcome to March, my friends!

Unfortunately, this month we don’t have any events set up, so we encourage you to wrap up threads and create some personal plots! Next month will be bringing in a new monthly event (Lost Belongings!) so you can always set your character up for that! If you have ideas for future Events, you can submit them here!. Additionally, you can see upcoming events here!

Speaking of new threads, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

January 2018

Welcome to the New Year, one and all! We hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday season, and we can't wait to see what your characters will get up to over the next twelve months (and beyond!). The Secret Santa Event has been extended until the 30th of January, so for those of you (like me!) who were busy over the end of December, we hope you can get your threads up and running over the next few weeks! There has been a lot of interesting interactions so far! As we extended the SSE, there won't be a specific January event this month! Don't worry though, we have something up our sleeve for February!

With the end of December, our Christmas layout has gone back into hiding! You'll be able to use it again at the end of the year, when Christmas again rolls around. You can expect a new layout for the site in the near future.

December 2017

And so it is December! Can’t believe how fast this year is flying by! At any rate, we have LOTS of fun for you this month! For starters, why don’t you sign up for our Secret Santa Event! Pairs will be assigned on the 14th! You can sign your character(s) up as a Giver, a Receiver or Both! We also hope that you enjoy our Christmas layout, which will be available for use for the entire month of December! After that, it will go into hiding until next Christmas!

We will also be awarding the HORRIFYING MOMENTS stamps to those who qualified for them, as well as the WORDS OF THE MONTH for November. We hope you enjoyed these Events, and you can expect more of them in the upcoming year!

This month we will also be focusing on the RP Records, and request you submit all your threads here so we can update the Timeline! As it says in the thread, the Timeline will be updated every month, in the first week. To help us maintain, be sure to submit your threads as soon as you open them!

November 2017

Welcome to November! We'd love it if you would take the time to Vote in our Horrifying Moments threads! We will also be awarding Stamps for people who vote, not just those who took part! We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we did! You can see the Stamps that will be awarded in the Horrifying Moment's thread.

This month we are doing a 'Words of the Month' event! You can choose your word/s as indicated in the thread, and may particpate with as many characters as you desire! This contest has no voting to earn stamps; you get a stamp just for participating! Enjoy!

October 2017

Welcome to October! As part of our Halloween celebrations, the Horrifying Moments event is now open! You may START a thread at any point during the month of October to qualify it for the event! We hope you have a lot of fun with this event, and we look forward to reading your threads! Don't forget to "Like" the threads you enjoy most, so we can award someone the MOST HORRIFYING stamp! Stamps will be revealed later in the month!

September 2017

Welcome to September! This month, we're working on our Awards for the site! We are also advertising avidly! Please welcome any guests or new members with all that warm charm we know you all posess! That said, we are still seeking Affiliates, so if you're here to drop an ad, please consider us!

Our next PC Clutch will be in the new year, so now is the pefect time to join with old candidates (how many clutches have they stood for now?!) and candidate hopefuls! Get those eager young men and women out there and grow them so we can match them with their perfect lifemate when the new year rolls around and one of our lovely golds throws a clutch on the Sands -- At this point in time, the Weyrs are sharing Candidates, so your Candidate can be Searched by any Weyr, and transfer to the one holding the PC clutch!

August 2017

We are officially open for our relaunch, and are excited to meet and greet new RPers! We're currently looking for all types of characters, including Weyrleaders and goldriders! But we also have lots of room for green and blueriders, weyrfolk, candidates, and all types of Hall folk, such as Masters, Journeymen and Apprentices. If you have any questions, feel free to hit us up in the Cbox or Discord chats, which can be found on the lower part of the screen.

July 2017

We are currently having an event to Create Adoptables! And encourage everyone to take part!

History is almost complete, and the profile has been re-coded. All new characters will need to go onto the new profile, but all old can keep their current! We'll begin advertising properly over the next couple of weeks, once the history has been completed, and probably after the weekend of the 8th and 9th, because that is when ThistleProse is having her birthday.

June 2017

We are on the brink of relaunching! Our history is being rewritten and cleaned up! We are accepting new members, and old! Our advertisment has been re-written, and will be put out there soon. We are also accepting affiliates of all descriptions, genres and themes! If you would like to affiliate with us, please go here
We officially have two layouts! You can post here with any issues you find, or request any changes!

May 2017

Progress has slowed down a little, due to RL events (yay promotions! Boo no internet!) but we're getting back on track! Documents are still being written and we've put together a FAQs page, though its likely to recieve a lot of adjustments as we come across things. The current goal is to have everything set up and ready by July, but we'll see how well we go at that. And by we, I mean ThistleProse. lol.

April 2017

The layout is almost complete, but there is still a lot of work to be done; documents are being written up and can be found in the Site Map menu opion. Players can begin to move their characters' information to their Account Profiles, but be aware some changes may still be made and/or added.
If you find any bugs or issues, plese repot them here, and we will do our best to fix them in a timely manner.

R'dal was nearly dancing on the spot with excitement. F'drel had agreed to come fishing with him down at the large lake near Katila. He hadn't seen much of his newest friend since the fires had him curling up with the man after their shifts --or stealing their blanket nest if their shifts didn't align- just a quick visit here and there when he popped into Ista to see family. Now they had the whole day together!

They had planned to meet by the lake early morning since that was a good time to fish; or so R'dal had heard. He'd never gone fishing before. He had never been on the small row boat he was standing beside either. He was confident F'drel would know how to do all of that since the man seemed rather put together and intelligent. He probably should have asked. Oh well! It was just a lake, not the ocean where they could drift out to see and never be heard from again. They also both had dragons so even that wasn't likely to happen if he had chosen to fish at the Istan shoreline.

Edath was lying in the shallow water, enjoying the way it lapped at his body while he eyed his rider with trepidation. He knew R'dal could swim and was confident neither of the men would try to drown the other intentionally but the whole idea seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. Why did they need to be in such a small floating object? Why did they need a knife and hooks? He feared his carefree mate was going to end up hurt because he wasn't paying attention. At least they were enjoying a day out in the sun with swimming so the idea wasn't entirely horrible.

R'dal looked up when he heard Edath croon a greeting and saw the green pair heading down to their location. He waved from the boat he was now sitting in, large smile in place. He had been studying the oars and contemplating how hard it would be to row when Halomirth appeared but the task was forgotten as he jumped out of the boat that was safely snug on the sand and waited for F'drel to join him.

Good morning, Halomirth. You look lovely today, Edath greeted the green dragon as he sat up, not wanting to look like a lazy grouch with the way he had been lying in the water. I hope you're in the mood for entertainment today. I think we're in for a good show.

As Halomirth made the jump between to Katila, using the image Edath had given her of the place, F’drel wondered for what seemed like the hundredth time where his good sense had gone. It certainly wasn’t with him when he agreed to go fishing with R’dal, and it wasn’t with him then as he went to meet up with the bluerider.

F’drel had a whole list of why this venture was a bad idea. For one, going to other continents alone with a bluerider was still a bad idea. Berry picking with R’dal had gone fine, as had sharing a bed with him several times during the fires, so even if R’dal was hardly the worst bluerider to spend time with, and F’drel would never admit to not minding spending time with him too much, but still — it was the principle of the thing. Beyond that, F’drel had never gone fishing before and had no clue how to do it. He understood the basics of ‘put tasty thing on hook, stick in water, pull string out of water if fish tries to eat it’ but the practicality of it was beyond him.

Hopefully R’dal knew what he was doing.

Halomirth, unlike her rider, was very excited for the day’s activities. Swimming! Friends! What fun! She chirped a greeting back to Edath as she touched down on the sand. Good morning, Edath! she said, as F’drel clambered off her neck. It took all her willpower to not immediately dash into the water, but she managed to stay still so F’drel could take the riding straps off her. Despite her reassurances that the vast distance to Katila meant nothing when they betweened he still wanted the insurance of the riding straps when crossing an ocean. So silly! As soon as the last buckle was undone and the straps slid off her hide Miri bounded forward, splashing through the water to reach Edath. She gently touched their noses together before sitting down next to him. I am always up for entertainment. the green told him, knowing they would all have a good time at the lake.

Back on the shore, F’drel eyed the small boat dubiously. He’d thought they’d be fishing from the shore, not in a boat. F’drel had never been in a boat. He wasn’t sure he trusted them.

“You didn’t mention the boat,” he said by way of greeting to R’dal.

R'dal's smile faltered and then finally fell into a frown at F'drel's greeting. "I didn't? Oh...well, surprise!" He was sure he had mentioned it but it was also possible he forgot in the excitement of making plans. The doom and gloom of the moment vanished as he waved his hands dramatically in presentation of the boat. All that was missing was a ‘ta-da!’

It never crossed his mind that F'drel might not like boats, only that perhaps his friend would have dressed differently if he knew about it. So he didn’t think to change their plans and fish from the large flat rock nearby that dragons used to love to sun upon back when Katila was home. “Just kick off the boots and socks and you’ll be fine!” He pointed down and wiggled his toes to demonstrate what he was talking about; as if F’drel might not understand the concept. It wasn’t like the man never took his boots off. After all, they had shared a blanket nest and each time the greenrider has successfully removed all footwear before curling up for intense spooning action.

“Maybe roll up your pant legs as well, just in case the water is above your ankles after we get the boat into the water.” How would they do that? Did they both need to push? Could he just sit in the boat and have F’drel do all the hard work? That was rather rude of him to think and it had nothing to do with the colour of their dragons’ hides. He definitely still wasn’t a bossy and mean bluerider but he was close to being an inconsiderate friend! “I think we just have to shove it together a bit and then hop in.” R’dal spoke aloud but it seemed more like he was talking to the boat that he was now looking at instead of F’drel who had held his attention when talking about clothes seconds before the shift in topic.

“I got everything together already as well. I was even told this is the best bait,” R’dal leaned over the edge of the boat to reach under one of the benches that was really just a wooden plank and pulled out a bucket to show off. “So we shouldn’t have any problems.” He said it with so much confidence that even Edath started to believe the men wouldn’t drown within the hour. But by the time the bucket was put back, he started doubting the good intentions once more.

“I may have missed it,” F’drel said quickly at R’dal’s frown, not wanting to upset the man so early. It was entirely possible R’dal had mentioned a boat, but the bluerider had a tendency to talk fast and ramble and honestly F’drel probably didn’t catch a good deal of what the man said. Halomirth spoke fast and changed topics quickly too, but with her he had the advantage of sharing her thoughts, making following along much easier.

He immediately started taking off his boots at R’dal’s suggestion, instinctively moving to fulfill the request. There wasn’t really a good spot to leave them, so F’drel just lined them up neatly and left them on the sand where he took them off. His pants were then rolled up as far as he could get them — F’drel did not want soaked pants, as they would be uncomfortable to wear and he wasn’t taking his pants off in company — before he turned back to the boat and R’dal explaining how to get it in the water.

F’drel gave the bucket of bait a brief glance, not really registering what it held, before it was put back in the boat. “Alright,” he said, looking back at the boat apprehensively, “should we get it in the water, then?” That was the next step, right? Get the boat in the water, get in the boat, fish? F’drel watched R’dal, assuming he knew what to do and intending to follow his lead. And hoping that Miri wouldn’t be too distracted by Edath to rescue him if he fell out of the boat and started drowning.

“That would make fishing from it easier,” R’dal agreed as he stood there waiting for F’drel to take the lead in getting the boat into the water. When it became obvious that the greenrider was possibly also playing the waiting game, he chewed on his lower lip and eyed up the boat again. He’d been doing that a lot since he arrived.

"Let's push and jump in. You're on the right and I'll go on the left," that seemed like a good idea and R'dal moved into position. Once F'drel seemed on board with the plan and got into place, he started pushing and decided while it really wasn't overly hard to do, it was enough to make the scrawny bluerider realise he needed to do more than tend to his dragon as exercise. He scrambled up over the edge when he noticed he was pushing more than needed and the water was threatening to lap at his pants that had only been rolled to mid-calf and grinned at his friend at their successful job.

That was likely the hardest part, R'dal decided as he glanced around them and how they floated so effortlessly on the water. It was kind of enthralling, really, and made a point to enjoy the view later on once they were in prime fishing location--wherever that might be. But when his gaze fell back onto the oars, R'dal amended his idea of what might be the hardest part. Cautiously he picked one up and then handed it over to F'drel with pure innocence radiating from him. He was still convinced F'drel was a lord's son before being Searched and boating seemed like a lordly activity. Oh! What if they had a drudge row for them? Suddenly embarrassed at his presumptions and lack of idea on how holders worked, R'dal gave a nervous laugh.

"I think it'll work better if we both take an oar," he pointed at the other one still lying on the bottom of the boat to show he was going to help as well. Even if drudges rowed, F'drel probably still had idea of the basics and R'dal figured he would sneak some peaks at his technique and copy it.

F’drel followed R’dal’s instructions, moving to the right side of the boat and helping maneuver it from the sand into the shallow water. He’d rolled his pants up above his knees, so when R’dal’s pants were threatened by the water F’drel still had a few inches left before he had to be concerned. Still, the boat was sufficiently in the water that it didn’t need to be pushed further and as soon as the boat had steadied out after R’dal got in F’drel followed suit.

The benches looked a little suspect, but standing while in the small vessel was decidedly worse, and F’drel quickly sat down on one of the planks, pointedly ignoring the soft creaking the wood made. It was fine, he was sure the boat was perfectly sound and wouldn’t start leaking in the middle of the lake. R’dal was sure to have gotten a decent, safe boat, right?

He quietly took the oar he was handed, but only held it across his lap. How did one use these things? R’dal said it would work better if they both rowed, but didn’t actually move to pick up the other oar, just pointed. F’drel couldn’t help but be a bit irked. Why say that if you’re just going to point? Did he even know what he was doing? If he didn’t, they were fucked because F’drel sure didn’t.

Resigned to drowning due to their sheer incompetence, F’drel looked back at the oar. It was rather like a laundry paddle in shape, now that he thought of it. Maybe it worked the same way? He hesitantly stuck it in the water, making a few short, strokes with the oar. The boat did move a bit, but hardly any at all and they sort of turned a bit. F’drel tried again, and it didn’t take too long for him to figure out that longer strokes than what he would use for laundry worked better, more like stirring than paddling laundry. An angle worked better than straight up and down as well, and by the time F’drel felt he’d mostly figured it out R’dal had picked up his oar as well.

“Are we, uh, trying to get anywhere in particular or just anywhere?” he asked, glancing over at R’dal. Their chances of getting the boat to go somewhere specific other than ‘vaguely forward’ or ‘turning right for some reason, why is this happening’ didn’t seem great, but maybe they could make it work. If it wasn’t too far away anyway, F’drel’s arms were already starting to feel the activity. They didn’t hurt yet, but it was only a matter of time if they had to row a lot.

R’dal watched intently as F’drel worked with the oar. He did notice that his friend didn’t seem as confident as he thought he would be but maybe it was an act so he didn’t come across as cocky and good at everything he did? Seemed likely and R’dal picked up his own oar after some more observing and dipped it into the water like F’drel was doing but on the opposite side—a decision he made last second when it seemed like they wouldn’t do well with the oars battling for the same space. He wasn’t sure if it was the right idea after a few strokes since they seemed to turn more than move straight but at least they were moving so it was good enough for him.

“Wherever seems like the best spot to find fish. Maybe over there,” again he gave a vague wave of his hand in a general location but they didn’t have to go too far, and likely wouldn’t make it even if they wanted to with the pace they were going. “Probably away from the dragons in case they start playing and the splashing scares away the fishies.” Or would they actually help by scaring the fish toward their hooks? Maybe if they had a net it would be a better plan. He’d try to remember that for another time.

Several minutes passed before R’dal looked back to check the distance from the beach and felt they were far enough away to count as a good location. He was actually impressed with the work they did and smiled proudly at F’drel. “I think this is perfect!” He dropped his oar back to the floor where it had been found but ignored all the gear he had gathered in favour of looking over the edge of the boat. They were out further than he had ever swam when living in Katila and the water, while deep, was still clear enough to see the bottom and it was fascinating! There wasn’t much happening down there at the moment but he’d definitely be making regular check-ups!

“So… I guess we attach the bait to the hooks now?” R’dal turned his gaze back to F’drel, hopeful his friend would take the lead once more. He meant to ask the old man in Katila how to do that and how to actually fish but the man was called away to deal with something and R’dal didn’t have the time to wait. It would be horribly rude if he made F’drel wait, after all. Leaning forward, he grabbed the bucket of bait from under F’drel’s seat and left it between them then grabbed one of the two rods and carefully eyed the hook. Maybe it was as simple as just stab the bait on the end and toss it into the water?

Going with that idea, R’dal picked up a worm with a very manly ‘eeeww’ with his face scrunched up. Fishing was rapidly losing its appeal but he continued on with his task, not wanting to seem like he was already giving up when they hadn’t even started.

Maneuvering the boat far enough from the dragons sounded like a good idea, as even though the two dragons were just relaxing while partially submerged at the moment, F’drel had no doubt Miri would get excited about something or other eventually and splash around and stir up the water, so he nodded at R’dal in agreement with the plan.

After that he focused on paddling the boat, which was actually kind of relaxing after a while if he didn’t think about trying to get anywhere and just paid attention to the rhythm of rowing. He carefully put the oar back in the boat when R’dal announced they were in a good spot, and turned towards the bluerider. F’drel mimicked R’dal and picked up the remaining fishing rod, shrugging at the question about the next step. He had no idea, he’d never done this before. Putting the bait on the hook seemed reasonable. With a frown, F’drel considered the bait. Worms. Which, despite R’dal’s noises of disgust to the contrary, weren’t that bad. Just rather thin to stick a hook through, weren’t they? It would be so easy for them just to fall off. Maybe stab them a few times? Wrap the worm around the hook a bit? F’drel gave that a try, winding the worm around the hook and poking it through the doomed wiggling creature three different times before deciding that should be sufficient.

“Do we drop it in the water now?” he asked, glancing at R’dal. There wasn’t like, secondary bait, right? Or another step he didn’t know about? As far as he knew it was just bait the hook and chuck it in. Nabol was landlocked, and while there was a lake within two days of the Hold F’drel had never gone outside the hold boundaries until he was searched, so no fishing or talking to fishermen for him. R’dal seemed to think he had some prior knowledge of the whole process, for some reason — maybe the fact he lived on an island these days? F’drel had no idea, but it was not helpful.

“I have genuinely no idea how to fish, R’dal,” he eventually admitted, staring at the baited hook. Maybe if R’dal knew how clueless F’drel was he’d offer more guidance and they’d actually get somewhere.

R'dal liked F'drel's tactic of wrapping the worm and stabbing it--well, he didn't really like the stabbing part but at least the worm stayed on-- and managed to successfully mimic the idea and smiled triumphantly at his work. He gave a nod a moment later to the question about dropping it into the water. He had never been fishing but he had watched from the shoreline when some of the older Katila residents would go out fishing. He had no idea what the little details were but he definitely recalled some of them simply dropping something in the water or casting it further from the boat.

He was just deciding if he wanted to try tossing it further out or not when the confession came and R'dal turned wide eyes on his friend, clearly shocked at the revelation. "What! I thought you would have known for sure. I mean, you're a lordling, right?" R'dal heard some of his friends use that term about when they were making fun of the history and geography lessons Casa was apparently getting from some young lord. He liked the word, thought it was fun, and was happy he got to use it in a sentence that wasn't just in his head.

"Oh no! Fishing really is drudge work, isn't it? I couldn't decide if it would be or not. I mean, we had to fish for food in Katila and I know there's like whole Holds dedicated to it, but I thought maybe it was something lords liked to do to relax as well. It seemed relaxing when I watched someone else do it." R'dal nibbled on his lower lip as he waited for F'drel's reaction to his horrible assumptions. He was clearly a greenrider now, not the son of Lord Whomever, but it had to still be insulting to assume a task that drudges did was something he would do. The fact that F'drel had humoured him this long was awesome, though! F'drel was an amazing friend and R'dal was going to have to make it up to him.

F’drel stared blankly at R’dal, positive he was mishearing things. R’dal thought what? He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t think. R’dal was lucky F’drel was so stunned otherwise he might have gotten shoved out of the boat. A lordling.

“I’m afraid you’re mistaken,” he said stiffly, each syllable sharp as ice, “for one thing, I’m from Nabol, and there’s nowhere to fish there, only mountains. As such, fishing isn’t exactly the common lordly activity. The relaxing and fun thing to do there tends to be drudges, not fishing. That’s what I was, by the way, because my mother was one, and that’s all you have to look forward to as the child of a drudge — being one yourself until you die. Unless you get lucky enough to be Searched, and that wasn’t a dream I got to have growing up, considering dragons had disappeared and were presumed all dead. Though I’m sure if there was anywhere to fish nearby I would have gotten to do all the less pleasant bits for the sons of Nabol, but, unfortunately, I never got the chance.” F’drel bit the last bit out, sarcasm dripping from the words.

He was shaking. In anger? Maybe, there was a lot of that swirling through him, but F’drel knew there was a lot more there as well. He carefully skirted over thinking about it too closely, focusing instead on the anger — the anger was easier.

Stupid weyrbrats who knew nothing about the rest of the world. Did he act like a lordling? Self-centered, always assuming the world will bend to his wishes, never asking, only demanding, thinking everyone existed to serve him and his whims, not giving a single fuck about anyone else ever — he wasn’t. Was he? F’drel felt sick. He didn’t come across like that, did he? He couldn’t. He couldn’t.

His chest hurt. He wanted to leave. He had to leave. “Halomirth,” F’drel said aloud for R’dal’s ‘benefit,’ or whatever, “come get me please.” The green, who had been paying close attention to her rider at the spike of emotions, sent him a quiet affirmation. With a sad little chirp to Edath — she wanted to hang out longer! — Miri started moving through the water towards the boat to get her rider and take him somewhere else where he didn’t feel like this. She didn't like it at all, it hurt!

The fishing pole clattered to the bottom of the boat as R’dal let go to dig his fingers into his pants, the material bunching up nicely in his fists. His stunned expression that was stuck with wide eyes and mouth shaped in an ‘oh’ that was never released was finally hidden as he dropped his chin to his neck and scowled at his hands. How could he mess up so badly? He didn’t think he’d ever done something this horrible in his life! He had angered F’drel so much all because he had assumed the wrong thing; many things, really. R’dal didn’t know it was a bad thing to be a lord. He thought that was what people wanted to be and that they respected the lords. He respected the Weyrleaders and thought that was the same thing.

Truthfully, he really didn’t know anything about the Holds outside the gossip from those that came from them, and even then, he had to admit he didn’t spend much time with them. He also hadn’t really been to a Hold since the move North. Sure, a Gather here and there, but R’dal was kind of intimidated by them and had never gotten around to properly exploring one. Actually, it was something he wanted to ask F’drel to do with him sometime, thinking the greenrider would know all sorts of fun things to try and cool facts on top of just being good company. Now he wasn’t even sure if they would bring the boat back to shore together since he was calling for his dragon to rescue him from the mean bluerider.

His vision started to blur as tears threatened to spill. He had never angered a friend like this before and it sucked. He felt horrible for bringing such pain to someone as well as not having any idea as to what it would have been like to be a drudge and wish to escape by being Searched. Or, like F’drel said, not even having that dream because the dragonriders had decided to hide for so long.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered and wiped away the tear that escaped. “I’m so sorry, F’drel!” R’dal shouted, absolutely sincere in his words even as he wondered what else he could do to make it up to his friend. Launching himself at F’drel for a hug seemed like a great place to start and he only noticed the rocking floor beneath him as he connected with the greenrider, reminding him they were on a boat and maybe he shouldn’t have moved like that.

Seeing R’dal wipe at his eyes had F’drel’s anger spiking again. What did he have to cry about? Being an idiot? That couldn’t be news to the bluerider. And what the fuck was he apologizing for? Making assumptions based on nothing? Was he pitying him? F’drel didn’t really have time to think on it before R’dal was hugging him, and F’drel was about to say something cutting when he realized could feel the boat shifting beneath them. There was a split second where he knew they were going to tip before they were in the water and all his anger was driven out by panic, along with all the air in his lungs. He couldn’t swim.

His first instinct was to grab onto something, anything, so F’drel wrapped his arms as tightly as he could around R’dal, as the bluerider was the first solid thing he could find. In his panic F’drel didn’t think that maybe he was dragging R’dal down or preventing him from keeping himself above the water. There was only the fear of drowning.

As soon as the fear hit Halomirth through their bond she shot forward through the water to reach F’drel and his friend, thankfully already fairly close to them. Grab on! she told her rider, placing her head alongside them to provide something to hold onto. But F’drel barely processed the instructions, too overwhelmed for them to make sense. He was grabbing on, wasn’t he? He was holding very tightly. Miri thrashed her tail, not sure why she wasn’t getting through.

Grab on! she pleaded this time including R’dal in the request hoping he would help F’drel, Please! F’drel’s fear was compounding with her own and the green was quickly becoming distraught, her eyes whirling a bright yellow, almost white. Thankfully for everyone involved, R’dal seemed to get the idea and it was only a few more long, tense moments before Halomirth was pulling the two humans with her back towards the shore and Edath, the overturned boat forgotten.

R'dal hadn't been surprised when they landed in the water thanks to his sudden movement that rocked the boat, but he hadn't expected F'drel to cling to him like he did. It was as if he... couldn't swim. Great. Not only had he insulted his friend but now he was going to kill the man by drowning him. R'dal kicked his legs with more urgency to keep them both afloat until Halomirth arrived, but it didn't seem like any amount of coaxing was going to get F'drel to transfer his hold. Somehow, he finally managed to get F'drel to transfer his hold to the dragon that seemed almost as panicked and they were drifting back to shore before R'dal even realised it.

He didn't know what to do. He upset F'drel over an assumption he had based on what he had created Hold life to be like. Now, he nearly drowned the man because he didn't know he couldn't swim. He wouldn't have suggested the boat if he had known! R'dal thought back on their friendship and suddenly felt sick as he realised he had been rather demanding in spending time together. It was always his crazy idea that got them together, always him dropping in on F'drel, always him doing most of the talking--though he did sometimes try to get the greenrider to talk about himself but it didn't always work. F'drel never came to see him. Maybe he had just been nice and tolerated him but never really enjoyed their time together. Did a lot of people feel that way about him and he never noticed?

They were midway between the boat and the shore when R'dal let go of Halomirth. "I never meant any harm, F'drel. And I'm not mad; I'd hate me too, if I were you. I kind of suck." He watched the pair move closer to shore before turning to swim back to the boat. He had borrowed the rods from someone and he didn't know who owned the boat since he took it without asking but he couldn't leave everything in the middle of the lake. Or the bottom of the lake, as was likely with the rods when he saw that the boat was flipped.

Edath had been standing alert on the shore, ready to help if needed, though it seemed everything was under control. Until his rider left the rescue party to go clean up his mess. The kid had a good heart but sometimes his head just wasn't on straight. Quietly, Edath made his way out to R'dal, arriving in time to help nudge the boat back to its proper floating position. I do not think the owner will be mad about the rods. He may be mad if you hurt yourself trying to get them, Edath didn't like the look of determination in R'dal's eyes as he spotted one of the rods on the bottom of the lake.

"I have to get them, Edath. I have to." He had messed up enough that day and old fears of disappointing his dad returned, knowing M'ris would hear about how he damaged someone else's property and almost killed a greenrider. His dad may not have cared that he didn't Impress bronze but R'dal felt like accidental murder might ruffle his feathers. At least he was confident he could get the rods. He could hold his breath for a bit and it had to only be thirty to fifty feet deep. He checked the shore to make sure F'drel was safe, took a deep breath, and dove under.

The process of reaching the shore was a bit of a blur to F’drel, and he only started to truly process what was happening as he sat on the shore sitting between his bulky green’s forelegs as she watched him intently. He groaned and leaned back heavily against Halomirth as he was hit by the shame of losing control and panicking. Damnit. There had been no intention, none at all, to snap at R’dal — it had just happened. The bluerider’s assumptions had just taken F’drel so by surprise his mind went completely blank and the first thing to return was anger. So he’d snapped and told R’dal more about himself than anyone else in the Weyr knew about him. Fucking fuck, F’drel hated feeling vulnerable, and if the emotional vulnerability wasn’t enough R’dal had gone and capsized the boat.

F’drel had been in the water before, the ocean even, but never anywhere he couldn’t easily stand. That moment of being completely surrounded by water, on top of already being off kilter, had caught him off guard and F’drel was positive under different circumstances he would have reacted better. But he’d already been having trouble breathing, with the way his chest felt tight from anger and the fear that maybe he was like the lords he knew, that he’d barely had any breath to hold. Between it all he’d just…not responded rationally. Thus clinging to R’dal like a child — Faranth, that was embarrassing.

’Can we leave now?’ F’drel asked Miri quietly, eyes closed as he tried to ignore the world around them. She replied in the negative. I’m not taking you between until you’ve dried off more. F’drel sighed, ’Are you sure? I am willing to suffer a cold to get home as soon as possible.’ Halomirth was unimpressed, and made sure her rider knew it.

“It’s not my fault R’dal knocked us into the lake,” he muttered, then frowned. Where was R’dal, anyway? The bluerider had been there when Miri reached them — as proven by F’drel having put a death grip on the guy — but hadn’t reached the shore, right? F’drel vaguely recalled hearing an apology of sorts while they were hanging onto Miri, and he tried focusing on what had been said as Miri told him Edath and R’dal looked like they were dealing with the boat. Nodding to Halomirth’s update, F’drel went over what R’dal had said. A sort of apology, saying he wasn’t mad, that it was okay if F’drel hated him — wait, did R’dal think he hated him? That was…not quite right. He was a bit pissed, yeah, but it wasn’t really at R’dal specifically. It was just the situation. Or something. Fuck, F’drel didn’t know, the idiot bluerider just happened to touch on one of his least favorite topics when he wasn’t expecting it and he reacted…poorly, to say the least. ‘Like a raging bitch’ was probably more accurate. He hadn’t meant to respond like that, but apparently he had less emotional control than he thought he did. Now that he’d calmed down a little — being thrown in a lake and thinking you were going to drown definitely changed the mood — F’drel could separate his feelings better, and knew that while R’dal may be a dumb weyrbrat with little life experience, the man wasn't malicious in his assumptions. They hurt, yeah, but R’dal didn’t actually know what he was implying.

With a sigh, F’drel looked up at Miri above him. “Have Edath tell him I don’t hate him and he should get his ass back here before he does anything else stupid,” he grumbled, not really looking forward to dealing with any of this. But it was better now than later, probably, especially if Miri refused to take him back to Ista for a while. Might as well apologize for being a bitch — he wasn’t apologizing for the boat though, that was entirely R’dal’s fault, not his in the slightest.

Too late, Edath replied drily to Halomirth as he continued to watch his rider dive under the water and surface again empty-handed. R’dal kept mumbling he was getting closer and Edath wondered when the boy would give up, although he knew it likely wouldn’t happen until he was too tired to see straight. He had set his mind on the task and nothing was going to persuade him otherwise. He didn’t want to upset anyone else from what Edath could gather through their bond.

R’dal surfaced with a gasp and a smile. “Got one!” He hefted the prized rod out of the water and dropped it into the boat before grabbing onto the edge for a moment of rest and to scan for the other rod. “We can head back to the beach and dry off on that big flat rock soon, promise!” He didn’t want his dragon to miss out on the sunning he was promised he could do during their morning’s adventure. Besides, he was a bit too wet for a trip between or even a leisurely flight back to Katila to return the rods.

I have been told you are not hated, in case you were still concerned about it.

“Really?” Hope filled R’dal’s eyes as he glanced around for the green pair. He saw them resting on the beach and was relieved to see F’drel was safe and he knew Halomirth would continue to keep him that way. He started to raise his arm to wave at them but stopped and returned to holding the boat. “That’s good but he’s still better off without me. I almost killed him, Edath. And I brought up bad memories, I think.” R’dal knew he was kind of sheltered and his life had been rather charmed for the most part. But he did live through the landslide and it still hurt to linger on that night for too long. It was probably the same for F’drel but his entire life before being Searched hurt, not just one night with days of fall out.

He really wanted to go hug F’drel again and apologise properly!

Then get in the boat and we’ll do that. You found one rod, the other can stay where it is for now. Edath felt R’dal’s inner turmoil and knew the boy’s desire to be with his friend and wasn’t at all surprised that he shook his head and dove back under the water. He gave himself a task and would finish it before seeing to his own needs.

It took roughly ten minutes before R’dal finally surfaced with the other fishing rod and tossed it in the boat. He was exhausted from the swimming and a bit lightheaded from how much he was holding his breath but he was done with the task and proud. With Edath holding onto one side of the boat, R’dal managed to drag himself inside where he was somewhat sprawled on the bottom between the seats. There was a bit of water in the bottom but he was soaked to the bone already and barely noticed. Edath took up a position that let him push the boat and he made for the shore.

When the boat was beached, R’dal stayed where he was, peering over the edge to where F’drel sat with his dragon. Apparently he wasn’t hated but that didn’t make it any easier to approach him again. What if he said something dumb again? Resigned to his fate that he might end up hated anyway, R’dal finally crawled out of the boat and sloshed his way over to F’drel, stopping a good ten feet away from the pair. He didn’t want to intrude on their space again without knowing exactly where he stood with them.

“I’m sorry, F’drel. I only thought you were a lord because you’re handsome, sophisticated, and even when you seem annoyed by me, you still go along with it, oh and I feel safe with you.” Those were things lords were and did, right? At least, he thought so but he wasn’t sure now. They didn’t seem like nice people going by F’drel’s reaction. “I’m sorry I assumed things, which is weird for me to do. My dad is a Weyrleader and you wouldn’t think that with me being a silly bluerider with no station… or responsibilities. People are just people, you know? But my imagination filled in the blanks my curiosity created.”

He fiddled with the hem of his shirt, wringing out some water before the right words came to him for the offer he wanted to make. “I like you and would be sad to lose your friendship so if I promise that we don’t ever have to talk about the past, or talk much at all if you want, can we still be friends? You’re good at cuddles and a good nap buddy and it’s been fun making new memories with you. And I’m already talking too much.” R’dal quickly shut up, pursing his lips tight to show he was going to do his best to stay quiet for once.

F’drel stayed curled up with Halomirth, not really paying attention to whatever was going on around them. It wasn’t until he heard Edath and R’dal reaching the shore that he looked up. He watched as R’dal got himself out of the boat and walked over to them. Sort of, he stopped pretty far away. Now that he was thinking clearly, F’drel decided to let R’dal say everything he wanted to say before speaking up, instead of interrupting. Just let him say his piece. He couldn’t help his internal commentary, but R’dal didn’t need to hear it before he’d actually thought about everything.

The way he came across to R’dal surprised him, and it took all of his concentration not to frown in thought — frowning would definitely give the wrong impression right then, so he was careful not to. Really, why did R’dal always tell him he was attractive? Was he implying something? Cause it always set him on edge, and he wasn’t sure what R’dal meant by it. Also, sophisticated? Was that how he interpreted F’drel being reserved out of paranoia? Which, if it was, was probably a good way to come across to others, really. Still though, not a word he’d ever thought to apply to himself. Past the confusion, hearing that he came across as safe was actually kind of nice. F’drel didn’t want to make people feel unsafe. He felt threatened by pretty much everyone, so not adding to that himself was…good.

R’dal being the son of a Weyrleader threw him though. Was he really? The idea made him uncomfortable for a moment, drawing too many comparisons between Lords and Weyrleaders, before aggressively putting the thought aside. It wasn’t that similar, especially in the current state of things. None of the Weyrleaders had been in charge for more than five turns, so none of their children had grown up with that lordling sense of entitlement. And your father being Weyrleader didn’t guarantee anything. R’dal may be a Weyrleader’s son — F’drel assumed it was M’ris, considering how often he visited Ista to see siblings, so it made sense — but he was a bluerider, so he’d never have the position himself. So it wasn’t the same. He didn’t have to re-evaluate everything R’dal had ever done or said in light of the new information. He didn’t.

Responding to R’dal’s question about staying friends took F’drel a few moments. R’dal was just…if any other bluerider had given that speech, F’drel would have called bullshit, no way it could be genuine. But R’dal always seemed like he meant it, and F’drel was pretty much convinced the man didn’t have a deceptive bone in his body. And he hadn’t hated their odd friendship thus far. Sure, R’dal was weird and had the strangest ideas and was just a tad clingy, but it wasn’t bad. F’drel had even gotten used to all the cuddling. It’s not like he had that many friends to start with, and R’dal really wasn't a bad one to have. He swallowed, throat dry, trying to figure out what he wanted to say.

“It’s alright, R’dal, I’m not…it’s just a touchy subject, for me, and I overreacted a little. A lot. It’s — I don’t hate you, or anything, I know you didn’t mean to — I mean, how could you know? I just, when you said that, I wasn’t expecting it, and I didn’t know how to respond, so I just lashed out. I mean, I’m upset, but not with you. By which I mean, yes, we’re still friends, and I’m sorry.” F’drel stumbled through the explanation, trying to express his point clearly when he didn’t entirely understand his response himself. He bit his lip, unsure if his words were working and decided on a more non-verbal assurance to back up his words. Quickly he shifted over a bit so there was space for another person next to him against Miri’s chest and indicated the spot with a gesture.

“Here, do you wanna come sit with us while we dry off?”

R'dal worried that silence meant F'drel was working out a way to tell him to leave him alone. Just because he had sat quietly through the apology and explanation didn't mean it would result in anything positive. Maybe F'drel was mentally chiding himself for hanging out with him and wasn't even listening anymore. But when the greenrider finally spoke, hope started to shine in R'dal's eyes and he listened eagerly, nodding at some parts or shaking his head at others, as if to say he agreed or that he didn't think it was a bad reaction to his foot-in-mouth boo-boo.

When the important part came, that they were still friends, R'dal couldn't hold back the smile that had been threatening to break free. F'drel wasn't mad at him and they were still friends! How amazing was that? R'dal wanted to throw himself at his friend again for another hug but since the last one nearly drowned F'drel and they were only just newly reunited as friends, that probably wasn't his best idea. It actually would likely rank right up there with fishing in a boat with a man that couldn't swim and neither of them knew how to fish. Or row a boat. How did they survive?

At the gesture and words to join them, R'dal nearly ran over but somehow refrained, trying his best to keep his cool.He had called F'drel sophisticated and had meant it. The man was also pretty chill and didn't seem the sort to run unnecessarily or to frolic and skip while humming a song but did he hate it in others? R'dal had only ever cared about impressing his dad and didn't care how others viewed him but he had insulted F'drel and misread a lot about him. He was suddenly self-conscious around him and, was it shy? He'd never really experienced these things before. He was pretty confident most of the time and wandered where he wanted. But now, he didn't know.

With a nod, R'dal finally found his voice again, though it was even softer than when he apologised. "I would like that, thank you." He slowly approached the pair and smiled at Halomirth, "Are you okay with me leaning on you still?" He did, after all, almost kill her rider. He'd understand if she didn't want him too close. It was why he sat close to F'drel but still several inches away from the dragon, not daring to touch her without knowing if he'd be squished or munched on first.

Edath eyed the large flat rock and then looked at the little group in the opposite direction. He was tempted to sprawl out alone anyway but he was fond of Halomirth and sensed R'dal needed a little extra support that he'd get from a closer proximity. Once R'dal was settled in with the green pair, Edath came over and sat down beside Halomirth with a slight shake of his head. Humans can be so much work.

It was with a quiet sigh of relief that F’drel acknowledged R’dal’s smile, clear evidence that his apology had been accepted. He really hadn’t meant to upset the bluerider and it was good that R’dal had the cheeriest personality in the world — other than Halomirth, no wonder she liked him — and bounced back right away. F’drel even gave him a small, partial smile when R’dal sat down next to him, still wanting to reinforce he didn’t hate him and still wanted to be friends. Which was definitely weird for him, wanting to be friends with a bluerider, but F’drel figured he’d overanalyze that later. Probably after he’d slept and put some space between this whole… morning? Was it still morning? It had already been such a long day.

While her rider tried to figure out what time it was, Halomirth trilled softly at R’dal, sound warm with affection for him. Of course I am! she told him, not at all thinking about what had happened. R’dal was still her rider’s friend, so everything was good! The panic of earlier had been mostly forgotten, and it didn’t even occur to the green to blame R’dal. There was no way he’d tried to hurt F’drel, as far as she was concerned the boat flipping was an accident and no one was at fault. Boats just did that, didn’t they? They really were such unsteady little things.

Miri purred when Edath joined them, delighted that they were all cuddling again. Their riders were slightly damp, which was a bit strange against her hide, but it wasn’t bad. Everyone was safe and friends and she got to spend more time with everyone.

They just need a little help sometimes, she said fondly, knowing F’drel and R’dal were lucky they had her and Edath around. Still, she was a bit tired — swimming as fast as she could while fearing for her rider’s safety would do that to a dragon — so instead of chattering more, keeping up a running conversation with Edath, she simply shifted her weight to lean against him, crooning quietly.
