Despite living in Ista having felt like being on fire for over a month, F’drel genuinely hadn’t anticipated actual fires starting on the island. He didn’t have any experience with fires, but being a dragonrider meant he and Miri had to help. The day had been spent rotating through evacuating holders, trying to stop the spread of the fires, and short rests for Halomirth — F’drel spent her rests helping settle the holders into the Weyr, finding food and whatever else a large group of people who didn’t have much time to pack needed. His time spent helping the Lower Caverns workers was actually useful sometimes, as he actually knew where things were kept, unlike one of the blueriders who’d been set to the same task while his dragon rested. The man thought that spare healing herbs were kept in the kitchen because kitchen herbs and healing herbs were ‘both plants, weren’t they?’

As much as F’drel didn’t like running around, fetching things for people who barked orders, and generally having flashbacks to his days of drudgery in Nabol, he did appreciate that the Weyrleaders knew greens weren’t able to go the entire day and let them rest a little periodically. Even with the rests, Halomirth still managed to get injured. Her jumps between always had been a bit too close, and this time it resulted in a singed wingtip. Thankfully it was nothing serious —it was the first time she’d gotten hurt, and F’drel had absolutely panicked about it anyway — but Miri had gotten the rest of the day off to heal. F’drel, of course, had to help around the Weyr once his dragon had been seen to, but he’d rather relive being a drudge than risk Miri hurting getting hurt further. The very idea made him shudder. No, he’d help settle in a gaggle of screaming children before he let Halomirth do anything that might aggravate her injury, no matter how minor it was.

Finally, after hours of dealing with scared holders and disgruntled weyrstaff and overworked dragonriders, F’drel could finally go to bed. He found a secluded bathroom to quickly wash at least some of the stench of smoke off him, and then headed back towards his weyr to check on Miri and then collapse. His feet dragged and F’drel was barely aware of the people in the halls around him, he was so exhausted by the day’s events.

R’dal knew he had pushed them both too much that day and he blamed himself entirely. He had piled the pressure onto his shoulders again, just like he used to do with Hatchings and if he’d Impress or not, making his dad proud or not. This was a bit more high stakes than that and he shouldn’t have kept going until they were out of steam but he couldn’t help it. He didn’t want to let down his Weyrleader, R’nya, and he definitely couldn’t let down his Weyrleader-dad, M’ris. So R’dal was always the first to volunteer every time a new assignment came in at the resting area. They never rested long but Edath insisted he was fine and that was enough for R’dal. If his dragon had said enough was enough, he would have stopped but Edath seemed intent on helping just as much as he did.

At some point during the day they were finally pulled from rescue missions to help shuttle supplies back and forth between unaffected holds and the Weyr until they were pulled from that as well. Edath was flagging and while R’dal had been as well, he kept trying his best to help, ending up in the kitchen stirring a large pot of stew that would be divvied out to helpers and refugees. Nothing fancy but no one would be expecting much more that day anyway.

R’dal was given a bowl and forced to sit on a stool in the corner of the kitchen by a kind older woman who wasn’t so kind in that moment as she glared at him until he ate the last drop. Then she had smiled, patted him on the shoulder, and told him to go home and rest. R’dal nodded, not sure he’d even make it out the door with how tired he suddenly felt, but make it he did, and even mounted Edath without issue. Jumping back to Telgar seemed too risky right then so they opted for a leisurely flight back to Ista Weyr, landing at the Weyrleader’s ledge.

His dad wasn’t back yet, but R’dal expected that. M’ris would stay until everything was put into place for overnight assistance and then likely return long enough to grab a short nap before going out again. It’s why he didn’t feel too guilty stealing his dad’s personal bath for a quick scrub down of body and hair, hoping to get rid of the stench clinging to him. It was tempting to sleep right there in the water but R’dal had tried that once and woke up in a panic, thinking he was going to drown and had done his best to avoid the temptation again.

Once clean, he frowned at the pile of dirty riding leathers and clothes. He didn’t want to put them back on and defeat the purpose of the bath so they were all shoved into his bag before rummaging through M’ris’ clothing to find a shirt and pants he could steal. His dad was a bit larger than him in muscle and only a bit taller but R’dal felt like he was swimming in the clothes but they were clean and comfortable.

Instead of stealing the currently open bed or the couch, R’dal mounted up again. M’ris would likely come home, bathe, and sleep. Maybe visit with Ameris. He didn’t need company for any of that. But who did need company? He still didn’t like the idea of going all the way home and didn’t know which of his Ista friends would have time or space for him this visit. Yes, he did!

A few minutes later and R’dal was standing on Halomirth’s ledge as Edath crooned a greeting to the green. R’dal did his best not to pout when he heard F’drel wasn’t home right then and after asking if he could curl up with Edath on the ledge for a short nap, he did just that. Edath invited Halomirth to join them as he settled in, R’dal curling up against a forepaw.

Upon arriving in his weyr F’drel realized that Halomirth felt a bit too happy for resting alone on her ledge with a minor injury. Apprehensive, he peeked around the doorway to Miri’s portion of the weyr, confirming his green was in fact not alone. F’drel recognized Edath, having gotten rather familiar with the blue over the past month, curled up with Miri. Well, if it kept her mind off of being hurt, F’drel guessed he didn’t mind. He walked out to them, leaning against Miri affectionately and giving Edath a polite greeting. As he was patting his dragon’s shoulder in greeting, he realized Edath wasn’t their only guest.

The blue had brought his rider with him, and the young man was currently asleep between the two dragons, leaning against Edath’s leg. F’drel blinked at the sight. He wasn’t exactly expecting visitors, but he really couldn’t blame the bluerider for falling asleep; F’drel would almost certainly have passed right out himself if he’d had more than a moment to sit down.

F’drel stood there for a few long moments, not sure if he should wake his friend up — he’d accepted the title by then. Really, being friends with him wasn’t that bad, just sometimes the bluerider’s enthusiasm could be a bit tiring. At least he’d learned the man’s name — R’dal — after two weeks of knowing him. Some greenriders F’drel was friendly with had been gossiping in the dining hall, and he’d managed to find out his new friend’s name without revealing he didn’t know it himself (he was rather proud of the feat). Of course, they probably thought he and R’dal were a thing now and would gossip about it. A bit irritating, but could be much worse.

With a sigh, F’drel walked over to the sleeping bluerider and gently nudged him with his foot. “Hey, R’dal. Wake up. Why are you here? Did you need something?” he asked, trying to figure out why R’dal had decided to visit (and fallen asleep). Miri trilled softly, her way of trying to gently rouse R’dal. She didn’t mind him napping with her and Edath, of course, but F’drel was here now! They should say hi to each other. And then she’d make F’drel put more of the odd smelling paste on her wing, it was starting to really hurt-itch. And maybe more napping after that? Halomirth liked that idea a lot.

R'dal hadn't meant to fall asleep as he curled up with the dragons to wait, but even when he wasn't exhausted from a long day of hard work he was able to nap at the drop of a hat. He was pretty sure he had drifted off while having a conversation with the dragons about diving in the ocean to retrieve shells. Maybe he dreamed that? It sounded like fun either way! But with the nudging, trilling, and talking, he finally gave up his hold on sleep and rubbed his hands over bleary eyes that finally focused on F'drel.

"You're home!" R'dal smiled and bounced to his feet, ignoring the protests of his muscles stiff from lying on the floor after working so hard. As was the customary greeting given to all of his friends, R'dal threw his arms around F'drel's waist and clung tightly for a hug. He had been censoring himself on their last meetings, trying his best not to overwhelm his newest friend with his antics but he was too tired to remember such things and held on tight with his head resting on a shoulder. "I'm glad you're okay! I tried not to think about how friends were doing today so I wouldn't be distracted so I'm kinda here to see you're okay and kinda here because we can't make the jump home and..." he trailed off as he considered how F'drel would see his plea. He already seemed suspicious of his motives most of the time which kind of hurt. He wasn't a sneaky bluerider! He was rather honest with his intentions and while F'drel was just as handsome as he had pointed out before, he wasn't going to jump the guy when there didn't seem to be any interest in it.

Maybe letting go would help sell the idea? So he did, even taking a step back and clasping his hands behind his back to keep from clinging again. "I wondered if I could sleep with you. In bed, obviously. Not sexually, I mean. And you look like you'd be cozy to curl up beside. I don't take up much space! And I don't move around or fidget, I swear." He stared up at F'drel with wide, innocent eyes, hoping the greenrider would say yes. A comfy bed with a friend was exactly what he needed that night but he'd sleep with the dragons if he had to. He really didn't want to and was fighting all his urges to just run past F'drel and climb into the bed he had now hyped up in his mind. It would be the best bed ever, like sleeping on a cloud!

Having known R’dal for more than five minutes F’drel shouldn’t have been surprised but the bluerider’s ability to go from asleep to high energy and rambling in about a second. He was certainly not expecting the hug he received. R’dal was lucky F’drel was so tired, otherwise he might have jerked back from the hug in surprise. Instead, he just blinked in confusion trying to process what had just happened to him.

He had just about figured out what R’dal was saying — actually answering his questions, which was impressive considering he’d been mostly asleep when F’drel had asked them — when the hug was suddenly broken off and R’dal was stepping back and… saying something about sleeping with him?

“You… what?” F’drel asked not entirely sure he’d heard the bluerider correctly. Or maybe he had, ‘I would like to sleep with you’ was a very bluerider thing to say. Though R’dal had said he didn’t mean it in a sexy way, which was almost the exact opposite of a bluerider thing to say. And he had said that he and Edath couldn’t make the jump home, which was a legitimate reason to want to stay somewhere in Ista instead of risking going between when both you and your dragon were exhausted. Halomirth had had her minor betweening incident already that day, and she hadn’t been as tired then as Edath likely was now. F’drel wasn’t going to force them to risk going back to Fort, not if they were as tired as he was. Miri would be distraught if anything happened to them. In his exhaustion it didn’t occur to F’drel that there were plenty of other people in Ista whose rooms R'dal could sleep in instead of his, just that he didn’t want to send them home.

“I guess you can?” he asked more than said, glancing over at Halomirth, “I was planning on sleeping out here with Miri.” The green was fine, but she’d never been hurt before and F’drel didn’t want to leave her alone all night. Just in case. “Though I suppose Edath could keep her company instead,” F’drel suggested, looking to Miri to make the final call.

Can you all sleep out here? Miri asked bashfully, glancing between her rider, Edath, and his rider. If she had the choice, she wanted to have everyone sleeping together. It was a little scary being hurt, even if the Healer said it wasn’t bad at all, and she wanted to keep her rider with her, but also Edath! The blue was very nice to lean against. And F’drel could do with someone more his size to cuddle with too. Yes, all four of them on the ledge for the night was clearly the best option. Satisfied that her choice of sleeping arrangements would be followed, she turned back to F’drel. Can you please put the stuff on my wing again before we sleep? It feels weird. F’drel nodded.

“Yeah, sure Miri,” he said, heading over to grab the numbweed the Healer had given him, “We can drag the mattress out here after I’ve dealt with her wing? Or if that’s too much effort we can just pile up blankets on the ground. Not quite as comfortable, but works well enough.” F’drel had slept on the stone with Halomirth a good few times, so he wasn’t overly bothered by it not being comfortable. There were more important things about sleeping places than how soft they were. The softest bed he’d ever slept in was also the worst. But he had a guest, so he’d defer to whatever R’dal preferred. “I’m fine either way, so whichever you want works.”

He’d regret his poor decision making when he had the energy to care.

R’dal was beaming at F’drel for agreeing to the sleeping arrangements and nodded at the ideas being tossed around, good to go with anything. Honestly, the bed would have been amazing but he’d sleep anywhere at this point and the dragons needed the love just as much as the humans after the day they had all experienced. Especially Halomirth! R’dal felt horrible that he didn’t notice when they first landed and suddenly the rider was forgotten as he turned to the adorable green, arms stretched out wide as R’dal threw himself against Halomirth’s side, pressing against her in a makeshift hug. “I’m sorry, Halomirth! I didn’t notice before. Are you okay? Tell me if F’drel is too rough tending you and I’ll bite him for you, okay?”

He hugged her a little longer and then shooed F’drel off to get the numbweed. “I’ll get the bedding! We don’t need the actual bed tonight.” It would be there another night and R’dal would insist on using it then. He didn’t think he’d have the strength to carry a mattress tonight and as he dashed off to the bedroom, inviting himself in to roam freely, he wondered about the strength and energy he currently did possess. Probably just a mini surge that came with the relief of seeing F’drel in one piece.

It took three trips since he wanted to be thorough in scouring everywhere for blankets and pillows, but finally R’dal dropped the last item in the pile he had made and did his best not to just drop onto it and sleep there, leaving F’drel to figure out where he’d sleep. He wanted to be a good guest and set everything up but figured it was best to wait for Halomirth’s wounds to be tended to so the dragons could settle in and the humans could find the best spot from there.

When that time came, R’dal grabbed a blanket and carefully set it on the ground in the perfect spot that allowed the humans to lean against a dragon if they so desired but gave plenty of room to sprawl out as well. Satisfied with the initial setting, R’dal set about building their nest of blankets and pillows and finally dove in. Studying F’drel, R’dal tilted his head to the side and then finally nodded, his conclusion made.

“You look like you prefer being the big spoon. I’m okay with that. I like cuddles from either direction.” He promised he didn’t take up a lot of space and that he didn’t move around, but he never said anything about not being able to keep from curling up against the other person! He patted the space beside him, encouraging F’drel to stop delaying and get his butt to bed. They had a slumber party to attend!

Halomirth swiveled her head so she could look at the bluerider pressed against her side, I’m okay! They said it’s not too bad at all, it’s just itchy, she reassured him, partially unfolding her wing to show off her burn. The area had been left uncovered, as apparently minor burns healed better in air (at least that’s what the Healer had told F’drel), and the constant low-level pain had stopped a few hours ago. The main concern was due to how delicate dragon wings were, but Miri was young and expected to heal fully with little scarring. Miri wasn’t terribly bothered about it anymore. When it happened she’d been in shock, not ever having been burned before, and the first few hours had hurt, but it wasn’t so bad now and she was already forgetting that her dangerously close betweening had caused her any problems at all.

Oh, he’s very gentle, it actually feels kind of nice. Halomirth told R’dal as she positioned her wing so that F’drel could reach all the slightly hurting spots. Mostly she just though the numbweed smelled funny, though it was nice and cool and made her hurt less. You won’t need to bite him. He usually likes it when people bite him anyways, so it wouldn’t tell him off. F’drel, who was about to pick up the numbweed spun around, completely confounded.

“Miri!” he said aghast, staring at as his dragon. Of all the things for her to say!

What? she asked, not sure why what she’d said was embarrassing or unexpected, I’m not wrong. Zei— F’drel could guess where she was going and that was not a conversation he wanted to have right then.

“Not the time, Miri, it’s time to dress your injury.” He said quickly, interrupting his dragon’s train of thought.

Right! she chirped, readily agreeing to the topic change, already thinking more about how once her wing had the stuff on it they got to cuddle!

F’drel took his time with Miri’s wing, both wanting to be thorough because Miri deserved the best care and because he needed a moment to recover from his talkative dragon’s unwitting antics. Honestly! ’You have no sense of privacy, do you?’ he asked her, gently applying the numbweed to the burns. Do I need one? Miri asked, sounding genuinely unsure. ’I would appreciate it if you did,’ F’drel thought with a sigh. I will think about it. she promised. F’drel had no doubt she meant it and also no doubt she'd forget about it within the day.

When Halomirth’s wing was properly tended to and the numbweed put away, F’drel turned to the blanket nest R’dal had constructed. He was rather relieved they hadn’t tried to move his mattress — it sounded like far too much effort on a regular day, and they were both far more tired than a regular day. The amount of blankets R’dal managed to find surprised him. Did he have this many blankets? Maybe there had been some in the back of the closet he’d forgotten about. There was still only the one pillow at least, as F’drel only used one and he wasn’t exactly trying to encourage guests. At least the blanket nest looked comfortable.

He couldn’t help raising an eyebrow at R’dal’s assumption about his cuddling preferences — and wasn’t that a weird phrase — but didn’t feel like questioning it right then. It would have required more brain power than F’drel currently possessed. Instead he just sighed and took off his boots, stalling for time a bit by going to lean them neatly against the wall before finally returning to the blanket nest and, after pausing for a moment, lying down. F’drel positioned himself towards the edge of the nest, with has back against Halomirth. Initiating cuddling wasn’t exactly something he was comfortable doing, so he watched the bluerider with his eyes half closed instead, assuming if the man really wanted cuddles he’d do something about it. F’drel really just wanted to sleep.

Halomirth's comments raised an eyebrow, but R'dal's was done in confusion. He got that some people liked to be bit and apparently F'drel may have been one of them but whatever the chipper green was going to say as way of explanation was cut off and R'dal was left in the dark with no idea where to even begin filling in the blanks. It was obvious F'drel wasn't going to tell him so he didn't bother asking. Besides, Edath would probably get it out of Halomirth and all R'dal had to do was ask in the morning. If he remembered and he didn't think he would. He just wanted sleep and didn't really need to know what F'drel liked while doing other things in bed and with whom.

R'dal patiently watched F'drel take his time getting ready for bed and was close to giving up on the man being perfect for cuddling with when said man finally laid down. Even as tired as they were and as relaxed as they should be, F'drel still seemed uptight and only partially inviting. He could have at least waved him over! R'dal pouted a little but quickly cheered up as he decided he wasn't shunned by getting a back pointed at him.

As graceful as a cat, R'dal slid closer to F'drel, taking the edge of the blankets with him. It was too hot to be covered but he liked having them all bunched up around him to nestle up in a bit more. With a practiced ease, he was soon lying on his side, back pressed against F'drel's chest, as his head claimed a small portion of the pillow that had automatically been placed where he assumed the greenrider would lie. He didn't really need a pillow of his own; if F'drel had laid on his back R'dal would have claimed his chest for resting on.

Everything was almost perfect. Just one thing was missing and when it didn't happen on his own, R'dal helped correct the error. He reached behind him, found F'drel's arm, and draped it over his body. "Perfect," he mumbled with a content sigh. Having a snuggle buddy made sleep so much better! "Good night, F'drel," he managed before the weight of the day finally became too much to handle and his eyes shut for a night's rest. Unfortunately his last thought before sleep took him was that he hadn't given an update status to anyone in charge and didn't let anyone know where he was. He'd probably be in trouble in the morning but he'd worry about it then. He was going to enjoy his night with his friend first.

F’drel was anticipating R’dal moving closer to him, so he at least didn’t jump at the sudden contact, but he was still all too aware of the bluerider’s closeness. He didn’t resist when R’dal repositioned his arm, not wanting to put up a fuss and delay being able to go to sleep. The whole thing may have him less relaxed than was ideal when in his own weyr, but it was still far less nerve-wracking than the last time he’d shared a blanket nest with a bluerider, after Miri’s second Flight two weeks earlier. ‘Blanket nest in his home with his dragon right there’ was decidedly better than ‘blanket nest in a random storage closet with his dragon many lengths of rock away,’ and of the blueriders he knew R’dal was the least threatening to be in close quarters with.

He murmured a ‘good night’ when R’dal said the same to him but was otherwise perfectly still, slowly acclimating to sharing sleeping space with a new person. It wasn’t long before R’dal’s breathing evened out and F’drel was confidant the bluerider was asleep. F’drel carefully shifted his arm to a slightly more comfortable position before relaxing a fraction more, finally closing his eyes.

Now that R’dal was asleep, F’drel was realizing that R’dal had been right, at least partially, about him preferring to be the big spoon. He hadn’t thought about it when he’d said it, just assuming it was R’dal being weird like usual, but it did make a difference. Not that he’d been doing a lot of cuddling either way recently, but when it did happen the greenrider (him) was the little spoon. But back in Nabol, with his siblings, it had been common for them to push their sleeping pallets together and pile in as close as possible, especially in the winter. As the tallest and the oldest brother, F’drel had been used to being the big spoon. And, he was suddenly realizing, he really missed it.

Mostly he missed his siblings, all four of the girls and his baby brother (who’d be turning nine in a few months), with an empty feeling he’d gotten used to since being Searched. At least these days he got to see them sometimes, and didn’t have to go to Nabol to do so. But they were just short visits, none of them wanting to take up too much time that the Lordling would contrive to keep F’drel from visiting, and he hadn’t gotten to cuddle with any of them in turns. And as much as F’drel held himself apart from other people at the Weyr, he’d grown up constantly in physical contact with friends and family — hugging, sharing beds, playing together, helping each other complete chores — and he missed that friendly contact. This, arm wrapped around R’dal sleeping against him, was the closest he’d gotten to that in a long time. With R’dal asleep F’drel didn’t feel the need to be vigilant and poised to react at all times, and it was nice.

This realization that he didn’t totally hate sleeping next to the bluerider was unexpected and rather startling, but the deep tiredness from the long day was tugging him closer to sleep, and F’drel pushed that particular insight aside for the time being, vaguely promising himself to examine it later as he joined R’dal in sleep.
