Madiquel had been a lifesaver.

Rhaedalyn honestly didn't know what she would do without the girl, not that she'd ever let R'nya know she was overwhelmed, worried, and stressed. He was partly to blame for it, though, so maybe she could point it out to him but knowing the man, he'd want her to have constant help and it wasn't entirely needed. Although, she countered herself yet again, it was nice having the extra hands and Madiquel was such a sweetheart and so good with the girls. She helped from time to time when Rhaedalyn found she needed the extra support and since the fire emergency in Ista, Rhaedalyn found she didn't want to let the girl out of sight.

Of course she had made Madiquel return to her papa to get some sleep when they finally put the girls to bed and they both seemed ready to drop themselves. R'nya had returned home, smelling like smoke and not looking at all like his usual pristine self. That was when Rhaedalyn held firm in her sending Madiquel home for the night. She wanted to take care of her mate, clean him up, and learn what was happening. It had been wonderful to have him back for the few hours he allowed himself to rest but he was too good at his job and wouldn't stay away for long.

By morning, Rhaedalyn was alone with her daughters and trying to run the Weyr in R'nya's absence again. The mentors stepped up their game as well, thankfully, and did a lot more hands on instead of just guiding other hands. She still gave the needed approval when needed and read reports coming in from their various regions that wre obligated to them but Rhaedalyn knew she was still distracted with the fires and whether or not her mate and friends were fine. By midday, when she'd stopped long enough to catch her breath and return to the young girls in her care, Rhaedalyn noticed the signs in Madiquel as well and wondered who she worried for.

An assortment of food was called for and when it was brought to her weyr, Rhaedalyn set about packing it up in a basket along with a flagon of heavily watered down wine. All the while she dodged the curiosity of her eldest daughters and Madiquel, smiling at them every time they asked a question, until she was ready to go. "We can't leave the Weyr for a proper picnic since Dissi's presence is keeping the young ones and the injured calm and I might be needed so we'll just have to work with what we have. Madiquel, grab the quilt and spread it out on the ledge in the sun."

While she would have preferred to bring them to one of the empty weyrs higher up, Rhaedalyn's worried mother side kicked in and wouldn't let her daughters play along a ledge so high up. They'd all just have to deal with Aradissicath's ledge that was only one level up and pretend people weren't so close by. Carefully Rhaedalyn set up the picnic, humming a song as she worked, and brought out her daughters, the twins bundled up in little baskets of their own so they could rest and Madiquel could join her in eating.

"I didn't want to tell you this morning," she began, worrying her lip as she realised she was both being a coward and not doing Madiquel any favours by keeping her from what was happening. She wanted to keep the girl happy and the picnic was to distract them both but it wasn't fair to either of them. They had spent most of yesterday wondering and fretting so Rhaedalyn was going to keep her in the loop as much as she could. "But I want you to know the truth and not exaggerations and rumours." She paused to pour four cups of the watered wine and handed them out. Varlea and Alyren were old enough now to enjoy it in such a state as a treat and since they were missing their daddy and had picked up on the panic in the Weyr, they definitely deserved to feel like big girls and drink with Madiquel and their mom.

"The latest report I received from an hour ago states the fires are still spreading and they're working on putting them out and rescuing those in need but it doesn't seem likely the fires will be out today or even tomorrow." With a frown, Rhaedalyn looked down at her hands that were wringing her cup. She was so worried for everyone and hated that she couldn't go help! They weren't sand-bound but having recently given birth to twins, R'nya and a Healer agreed it was best to keep her home and in charge of those that couldn't go either. So she got to stay home and work herself into a panic as she waited for updates and hoped no one was injured or worse.

Madiquel wasn’t sure when she’d ended up being adopted by the Weyrleaders; not that she didn’t appreciate it – she adored the little girls, and idolized Rhaedalyn. R’nya still intimidated her, but he was nice and she did like him, and she liked the way her Papa approved of her spending time with them, even though he knew she never wanted to be like Rhaedalyn – a gold rider! – she did know that she could learn a lot from the beautiful woman who seemed to always have everything in her control and know just what to say and do to make things turn out just right, from cooking to politics.

The disaster of the fires only proved to her more how amazing Rhaedalyn was, the way she took everything in stride and control of the Weyr while R’nya and the other dragonriders took to the skies to help fight the flames. Madiquel helped with running errands, but found herself primarily in charge of the two elder daughters of her Weyrleaders, keeping them occupied and telling them stories to keep them happy. They were old enough to know that something serious was happening, and to be concerned, but not really old enough that Madiquel felt they should know too much information – so she left that to Rhaedalyn when the goldrider had the change to talk to them.

Most of Madiquel’s day was spent sending Clover to Ista Weyr, peppering A’tay with questions and concern. He must have been busy, because most of her letters went unanswered, though Clover would pop back with images showing her that he had gotten the letter and put it in his pocket before giving the little firelizard some affection and sending her on her way. Occasionally, little Shadow would appear with an update, and Madiquel would just about snatch the note from the firelizard, noting on one occasion that while he reeked of smoke, he had no ash or dirt upon him.

When lunchtime rolled around – something Madiquel knew of because the girls were whining about being hungry, not because she was – Madiquel was surprised when Rhaedalyn started packing for a picnic, wondering where it was they would go. Maybe down beside the lake? She didn’t think they’d actually leave the Weyr, and was proven right when Rhaedalyn had her fetch the quilt and just pop it down in the sunshine near Aradissicath.

A worried frown formed on Madiquel’s face when Rhaedalyn said she was keeping something from her, and the young girl tilted her head, looking concerned. Madiquel knew she was still a child, and as much as she was growing up, she actually didn’t feel insulted when people still treated her like a kid; it honestly helped her feel safe and loved, and she knew it was only done for her protection. It never occurred to Madiquel to get upset or angry with the adults in her life who were looking out for her, any more than she would have at her friends taking care of her. She knew it was because they loved her, not because they thought she was incapable of handling things.

Madiquel accepted the cup of watered wine, curling her legs around herself and helping Alyren, holding her plate of food as the girl settled herself more comfortably so she could have both her drink and food without spilling either of them. When the child was settled, Madiquel set the plate on the girl’s lap, and turned her attention back to Rhaedalyn. “Thank you,” she said, after a long pause. She really didn’t know what else to say! The fires were terrible, and the knowledge that they’d be going for even longer – days from the sounds of it – was not reassuring. She wanted everyone back home, and she wanted to know that Ayontay was definitely not going to get hurt.

“Where are the fires?” She asked, fidgeting. “Is the Weyr safe?” They wouldn’t be able to evacuate the weyrlings; they were too big to be put on the backs of adult dragons and taken between but too small to do so on their own – at least from the last update she’d gotten from A’tay about his lessons. What would happen if the fire closed in on the Weyr? Madiquel bit her bottom lip, and clenched her hands tight around her cup as she waited for an answer.

Madiquel was handling the news a lot better than she had! Thankfully all of her well-intentioned mentors and helpers had been off doing other tasks when the update came in so she could panic and even cry a little in peace. She knew Wenon and Jajojin would think her weak for showing such emotions, especially since she was the one in charge while R'nya was away but it was a lot to do! Overwhelmed as she was and as worried as she was for dragonriders and Holders alike, she couldn't help the tears that finally slipped free. If she only knew how Madiquel viewed her as so put together, Rhaedalyn would have enjoyed the laugh it brought her.

"From what the report said, I looked on the map in Ren's office," normally she was rather good at keeping her nickname for her mate between them and a select friend or two, but Madiquel had become family in recent months and Rhaedalyn often forgot herself and relaxed around the dear girl. Not really a girl anymore as she just had her fifteenth birthday! "and I don't think the Weyr has anything to worry about. Even if the fires did spread, it would burn itself out on the exterior." That was something at least. She also knew some of the dragons were being tasked with digging fire lines, trenches that would hopefully cut off the fire with their fuel being taken from them.

"Varlea, give your sister back her grapes. You know they're her favourite," she loved her children but sometimes she swore the eldest two, normally as thick as thieves, purposely goaded the other into tantrums as much as they worked together to pick on dear old mom.

"Ista Hold will also surely be fine with it being on the southern tip. A few Holds in the north will likely be lost, though." Rhaedalyn fell quiet as she looked at the food on her plate. She had automatically filled it but hadn't taken more than a nibble or two.How could she eat with so many lives in danger? But she had to. R'nya would worry about her and that would leave him distracted and could lead to him being injured. Too many people looked to her as an example as well, three of which were sitting with her. So she began eating what she had grabbed.

“That’s good!” Madiquel said, visibly relieved as she puffed out a breath she hadn’t realised she’d been holding, and looked at Rhaedalyn with wide eyed relief. Her gaze darted to the girls when they were scolded by Rhaedalyn, and she hid a smile behind her free hand, refusing to meet anyone’s eye lest she lose the battle with withholding the laughter. It was one thing to be amused, and she often wasn’t afraid of letting Rhaedalyn or R’nya know when she was amused by the antics of the not-twin-twins, but she didn’t like the little girls knowing their naughtiness was found so funny by someone they looked up to. She could only imagine the antics they’d get up to if they knew how funny they were!

“Here, you can have some of mine,” Madiquel told Varlea, who was pouting at having to give Alyren her grapes back. They all knew Varlea didn’t really like grapes, but now she was going to have to eat the ones Madiquel gave her; the elder girl tilted her head so she could toss a playful wink at Rhaedalyn. Madiquel wasn’t one to tease often, but she found it great fun to innocently mess with the two younger girls. There was a high probability the grapes would find themselves back on her own plate, but that was fine – Madiquel quite liked them!

Madiquel took a sip of her watery wine, holding the cup between both hands, her plate resting on her lap as she frowned into the liquid. “What are they doing with all the people?” Madiquel asked, looking up with a deep frown. With the Holds being destroyed, there must have been a lot of people who were being hurt and then, even if they weren’t, where were all those people going? “What about the animals?” She asked suddenly, her face paling and eyes going wide. Were the dragonriders trying to save the animals, or were they being burned, or were they let loose to run for their lives? Madiquel bit her bottom lip, suddenly tearful.

“The people are being moved to Ista Hold and even some are going to the Weyr since they have a lot of available space,” but not much food, Rhaedalyn thought sadly, though it would likely be the same at the Holds as well. The heat had damaged a lot of the crops and at least the Weyr was suffering for it. Fort had taken in those that wanted to get away from the heat for a while but only the leaders knew the issue ran deeper than just a concern for everyone’s health and that M’ris was rationing the supplies somewhat in preparation for a worst case scenario.

“I’m not sure about the animals. I think it depends on the situation and maybe even the riders. I imagine most are being set free if they can’t help evacuate them properly.” Again, Rhaedalyn frowned, hating to think about beloved pets and livestock that kept families provided for perishing to the fires. But it couldn’t be helped. If their rescuer thought it was best to just get the people out and not risk life and limb for an animal, then there wasn’t much else to be done. “I do know of some tales where riders helped back up wagons and got farmers on the road with some of their animals before the fire closed in. Hopefully that’s something that can continue now that others are working to delay the fires if nothing else.”

She was the one that brought up the topic but now Rhaedalyn wished she hadn’t. It was extremely depressing and wasn’t going to help Madiquel’s hope in the situation. She knew the girl had a good friend there and while she believed that friend had recently Impressed and wouldn’t be near the fires, Madiquel still worried endlessly. How could she not and how could Rhaedalyn blame her when she worried for R’nya and her close friends? Neither one of them would be satisfied with written updates, not until they could see their men. Rhaedalyn knew she had the easier part since R’nya would likely come home again when it was time to rest but then, what if he didn’t come home? Maybe she had it worse, thinking she’d see him and never would again? That thought almost had her breaking down and crying but she managed to hold it together and hide behind a long drink of wine.

When the cup came away, Rhaedalyn had determination in her eyes as an idea struck and she would argue with R’nya and Jajojin both for this one. “When our favourite yet rather controlling men deem it safe, I’m going to Ista to see everything for myself. I want to see what took place and visit with the injured dragonriders that have been so brave and selfless.” It would do her well to see the horrors of the world that R’nya tried to shelter her from. She needed to know what was possible and what the outcome was. What if it happened outside their walls? Madiquel deserved it as well. The girl was sweet and everyone, Rhaedalyn included, did their best to keep her safe and oblivious to the way of things but she had friends involved just like everyone else.

“I also happen to know that Aradissicath can carry two people and I’d like your company, if you want to come.” She smiled at Madiquel, a smile that said they were being naughty in planning such things and that she didn’t care one wit. R’nya would eventually support her once he saw how badly she wanted this anyway.

Madiquel frowned sadly, poking at her food as she chewed instead on the words Rhaedalyn said. It saddened her deeply that the lives of animals were being lost, and made the whole situation that little bit more real. Not that it wasn’t already, but the fact that people were being put in a situation where they had to sacrifice the life of their livestock or pets, in order to save themselves and their families, was horrifying to the youngster. Putting her plate down, Madiquel wrapped her arms instead around Clover. The little firelizard hummed reassuringly, nuzzling at Madiquel’s chin.

“Sweetheart, be careful. You’ll spill your drink.” Madiquel dropped Clover in her lap to reach across and save Alyren from spilling her drink on her sister as the child tried to get more food. Once the little girl was once more seated, and no one was at risk of wearing her watered-down wine, Madiquel gave it back and turned her attention to Rhaedalyn again, sipping her own drink to buy her another moment longer as she composed her thoughts. “That sounds like a good idea,” Madiquel said thoughtfully, smiling softly up at Rhaedalyn. She could only imagine how inspiring it would be to see the Weyrwoman of another Weyr coming to make sure everyone was doing okay.

The invitation to join Rhaedalyn had Madiquel’s eyes widening dramatically and she stared at the woman, blinking rapidly as she tried to process the words, and the wicked expression on the goldrider’s face. How could someone so poised and beautiful and perfect get away with looking so naughty? Madiquel smiled tentatively, though she was clearly worried. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go, but that she didn’t think she should. Her Papa wouldn’t approve – if only because he hated her going between – but also because there would be such pain and suffering in Ista, and the horrors of the aftermath of the fires, and he would never insult Rhaedalyn by saying she wouldn’t keep Madiquel safe on her dragon, but he barely trusted anyone and their dragon… would he trust the Weyrwoman?

Madiquel bit her lip, and looked down. “Wouldn’t I be more use looking after the girls while you’re gone?” The way her eyebrows furrowed and she bit her bottom lip, Madiquel wasn’t even aware of her begging Rhaedalyn to say ‘no’, that she wanted her to go and someone else would watch the girls. She couldn’t deny Rhaedalyn, if she wanted her to go – really wanted her to – but she couldn’t imagine telling her Papa that she was going, when she knew he’d not approve and… but it would be good for her, right? And she’d get to see Ayont- A’tay and his beautiful bronze… Chewing her bottom lip, Madiquel dropped her gaze to stare down into the top of her cup.

Madiquel’s attention to the girls and the obvious love she had for them were why Rhaedalyn liked the young woman so much. Well, she was also a genuinely lovely woman as well and Rhaedalyn enjoyed her company without ulterior motives but she was happy to see someone that didn’t mind spending time or attention on the children. For all of D’hys’ kindness and assistance, he rarely paid a glance to the children and seemed to force himself to acknowledge them when they were pestering him too much to go unseen. But she knew not everyone was meant to be a parent or handle children for more than a few minutes at a time so she never held it against him.

“You would be useful no matter where you were and I would miss you dearly when you eventually leave the nest, so to speak,” Rhaedalyn never liked to lie and thought she was terrible at it anyway, so speaking the truth to Madiquel always came easily and she smiled as she spoke, though she was somewhat suspicious as to why baby-sitting seemed the more important task at the moment. Was she afraid of her father? Most people were, truthfully, but Jajojin doted on Madiquel and she never seemed to fear him. Perhaps the doting was why. She knew he panicked when it was time for her to mount a dragon and how much it had bothered him when she was in Ista Weyr for a few weeks. Oh! That had to be it. She was torn between wanting something and keeping her father happy and comforted.

“I’d really like it if you could come. I imagine a certain young bronzerider would be happy to see you and your mind would be at peace if you saw him in person.” It didn’t take much to figure out who Madiquel was always waiting on replies from. Rhaedalyn was getting to know Shadow very well, for one thing, and R’nya had told her all about that Hatching and Madiquel’s interest in A’tay. That actually gave her an idea since Jajojin likely wouldn’t go for having his daughter near the fire sites no matter how much Rhaedalyn asked him to let her come along.

“You could then spend some time visiting the wounded at the Weyr while I did the boring official business things. I think your father would be proud of you lending a hand like that and it would be good practice for the Healer Hall.” Rhaedalyn had never been great with tending injuries and didn’t think she’d ever have a talent for healing but she admired Madiquel for her decision to help people and hoped R’nya was making progress with the Master Healer on letting the girl in.

A soft, shy smile flickered over Madiquel’s lips as she glanced up at Rheadalyn’s comment – or perhaps statement would be more appropriate. Madiquel blushed slightly, both pleased and reassured by Rhaedalyn’s words. The girl wasn’t one to seek out compliments, but she didn’t have many friends and she hadn’t had a mother in a very long time – it felt like an eternity, truthfully – and somehow Rhaedalyn had stepped so neatly into the void that had been left by the landslide; part friend, part mother. Madiquel trusted the goldrider, and rejoiced in their relationship.

Madiquel’s smile bloomed from soft and shy to bright and warm at the mention of A’tay; she didn’t blush, but that was primarily because she was too innocent to even imagine the relationship with her best friend could be more than it was, never mind that other people might see it as more than pure friendship. Romance had yet to enter Madiquel’s mind, the Weyrbrat as innocent of such things as the two children she was sitting between. “I miss him,” she said softly, picking up a slice of fruit and frowning at it for a moment. She hoped Ayontay would come back to Fort when he was finished Weyrlinghood, but she knew that even if he didn’t, he would have Xyxyth to bring him by whenever he wanted – or whenever Clover carried a message his way!

“Really?” Wide eyes lifted to look at Rhaedalyn when she brought up visiting the injured, and how it would likely make her Papa proud and be good practice for the Healer Hall. Rhaedalyn was so wonderfully smart! Madiquel beamed at her, eyes wide and bright. “Do you think they’d need any help?” She asked, before her wide eyed and happy expression faltered, and she bit her bottom lip as the reality of the fires came back to her. Of course, they’d need help, anyone’s help. A’tay hadn’t been too direct in what the injured numbers were, but she got the gist of ‘too many’ fairly easily. Pursing her lips, Madiquel picked up a grape and rolled it between her fingers as she considered her next words.

“When can we go?” She looked up, still frowning, though she did pop the grape into her mouth and give it a fierce bite.

Rhaedalyn watched the emotions play over young features and smiled when it became obvious she had won the girl over. While she did have good reasons for wanting Madiquel to come --helping the wounded would be good training for her-- Rhaedalyn also knew what it was like to be sheltered away from what was happening. She was often overlooked growing up and when she was sent away to learn from a tailor but she found dragonriders could sometimes be worse than holders when it came to hiding things. Whether it was solely a R'nya thing, a Weyrleader thing, or riders in general thing, she was often left in the dark or given a very edited story. R'nya didn't do that to her much anymore, knowing she could handle it now and would possibly give him the silent treatment if he tried, but Rhaedalyn knew second hand information wasn't always enough and Madiquel would rest easier seeing things for herself.

That didn't mean she was about to bring the girl directly to the fires or insist she saw the worst of the victims! Rhaedalyn wanted to treat Madiquel as an adult but ease her into what the world could be, not toss her right in and scar her for life. No one would appreciate that, especially not Jajojin and that man scared her.

"I was originally thinking in a few days, but I think we can arrange for tomorrow. That will give us plenty of time to make arrangements for the girls and send word that we'd like to stop in and help." Madiquel was too happy to burst the bubble by making her wait. Rhaedalyn felt the following day would suit their needs and even if the fires were still roaring, Aradissicath wouldn't go near them so they'd all be safe. She only wanted to visit Ista Hold and the Weyr. Show that she truly was concerned for everyone and offer some assistance where she could.

"I think we can get some more bandages, fellis, and numbweed prepared to bring with us in that time as well. I'll write a letter for you to bring to our Healers, if you'd like to collect what we need. I'll look after organising what food we can spare. So many people in one place unexpectedly is going to make for a lot of hungry bellies as they try to spread the food out." They had already been rationing some of their supplies for Ista Weyr thanks to their heat destroying most of the crops. Surely they could skim a little more to help all those displaced? Maybe she'd organise a group to head to a fishing hole and another to hunt a few more beasts to bring.

Her mind was wheeling with new ideas and suddenly, she felt hungry again. "Eat up, ladies! We have a lot to do." Rhaedalyn smiled as she followed her own order and started eating once more.

“Tomorrow?” Madiquel gasped, her eyes widening as she stared at Rhaedalyn for a few moments. “Really?” her voice was higher pitched, but almost whispery as she swallowed back sudden excitement; her face glowed and she beamed at Rhaedalyn. She was going to Ista tomorrow! Granted, it would be primarily on Weyr business with her Weyrwoman, but Rhaedalyn had already promised that she’d get to spend time with A’tay and Madiquel knew Rhaedalyn would never go back on her promise without a really good reason.

Rhaedalyn’s next comment had Madiquel pausing as she was perusing the next piece of fruit she wanted to eat, and she glanced up, suddenly looking mischievous. “Could we surprise Ayon-A’tay?” As a Weyrling, Madiquel knew he wouldn’t be super busy all day, and he could probably get out of whatever lesson he was in that day to have a visitor. Or maybe the Weyrleader would let the Weyrlingmaster know they were coming and he would release the class before they got there? Was she banking too much on Rhaedalyn’s rank in that scenario? She didn’t know, but probably. Madiquel’s eyebrows drew together. “Do you think that would be okay?”

It would be so much more fun to surprise A’tay, even though she was desperately tempted to call down Clover and send him a note right that moment. Well, if Rhaedalyn said she didn’t think surprising her friend would be a good idea, Madiquel would send him a note as soon as possible! “I can do that!” Madiquel said excitedly, hurriedly swallowing the apple she’d been chewing on. A giggle was released at Rhaedalyn’s encouragement to eat up, and Madiquel did as she was told, finishing her watered wine at the end of her lunch.

When they’d all finished, Madiquel had the two older girls help her clean up, turning it into a game to ensure their assistance while Rhaedalyn wrote the note she’d need to take to the Healer’s. Once they were finished, Madiquel took the letter Rhaedalyn had carefully rolled and sealed, and then took the two little girls, holding their hands as they skipped and played their way down to the Healer’s hall. The sisters played together while Madiquel issued the letter to the healer in charge, and was promised everything would be ready to go the next day at the time Rhaedalyn had allotted. Beaming excitedly, she chased the two girls back up to their home and reported back to her favourite goldrider.
