It had been a long morning. Indivara had woken up on ‘the wrong side of the bed’, and it had taken little more than V’ler coughing for her to launch into an emotional and high-pitched shrieking anger, screaming at her mate any number of insults while he weathered the attack. She was mid-sentence when her emotions swung in the opposite direction, and after a dramatic pause, she’d burst into tears, throwing herself at her fellow bluerider and begging for forgiveness, crying fat tears as she hiccupped and clung to him.

From there, Indivara had decided the only way to make everything better was to delve into passionate sex, the young woman throwing herself wholeheartedly into the event, mumbling sweet nothings and softly moaning her delight against V’ler’s lips as they toppled back into bed. Afterwards, they dozed together for a little while, Indivara curled possessively half atop V’ler, preventing him from leaving until she was ready. When that time arrived, Indivara slipped out of bed and pulled on a bathrobe before making her way to her preferred bathing room. When she returned, V’ler was gone and the bed was cold, but Indivara didn’t mind, she was feeling much better.

Until she stumbled across one of V’ler’s socks, and with an irritated sigh (V’ler was never a slob, so it was especially irking) Indivara had picked it up and put it in the wash basked. But that had started a new chain of events; Indivara started in the bedroom, sorting clean from dirty clothing, then stripped and remade the bed, putting the dirty linen to one side. Then she’d dragged all the mats and rugs out to where Venseth was curled up in the sun on his ledge, and made him shake them out and pile them up neatly to one side. While he did that, she’d swept the entire weyr, and then she’d gone to the bathing rooms and filled a bucket with warm water. Trudging back, she mopped all the floors.

Tipping the bucket’s dirty water contents over the side of the ledge, Indivara had taken all the dirty linen down to the laundry rooms, where she’d given the items over to a couple of tittering older ladies. Ignoring them and whatever they were babbling about, Indivara made her way back to her weyr and dragged all the rugs back to their proper spots. Standing up properly after the last rug was pulled into place, Indivara’s sight went grey and snowy, her balance shifting so she gave a startled gasp – and Venseth gave a bellow of fear – before Indivara’s eyes rolled back into her head and she collapsed to the ground like a ton of rocks.

R’vi had friends scattered all over the Weyrs and regularly popped over to see them as much as he invited them to come see him on the beach. Given the near-unbearable heat of Ista lately, he found himself going to see everyone else more than usual, finding Telgar and Fort to be far more comfortable. That day, he didn’t have any plans laid out, only knowing he had the day free and wanted to get out before the heat really went into overdrive and made him too lazy to leave the cool shade of his weyr.

He popped into Telgar Weyr with the thought of visiting his brother first and going from there. Perhaps they’d spend the day together or maybe part ways after lunch but R’vi was willing to play it by ear and sort that out later. They were angling for N’vian’s weyr when Vydoriath gave a croon of concern that caught R’vi’s attention. Venseth sounds worried, Vydoriath commented as they passed by the weyr of Indivara and V’ler. R’vi laughed and shrugged off the concern, “Di’s probably just being Di and yelled at V’ler or Venseth. We’ll check on them later.”

No. We should see them now, since the blue dragon didn’t argue with him that much, R’vi relented—not like he was really the one in charge of where they went as he was just the passenger. Since N’vian wasn’t expecting him anyway, it didn’t throw off any plans to go see the blueriding mates he called friends.

When they landed on the ledge, R’vi could see an agitated Venseth and was suddenly glad Vydoriath got his way. Venseth normally didn’t care this much when the humans were bickering and he couldn’t imagine Indivara ever yelling at Veeth, which was something he could see Venseth disliking. “Di!” R’vi called as he slid to the ground and took off running inside, leaving the dragons to their own devices.

He swore he felt his heart stop when he saw Indivara on the ground and unconscious. He knew she was alive or Venseth would have freaked out a bit more and wouldn’t have been there to meet them on the ledge. R’vi dropped to the ground beside Indivara and lightly lifted her head up to rest in his lap as he uselessly pawed at her forehead for a fever, neck for a pulse, and scanned for injury. Maybe he should have paid more attention to the Healer that gave them basic first aid lessons the last time he was in a Candidate class, years ago.

Taking several deep breaths, R’vi forced himself to calm down since he wouldn’t be a help to Indivara if he was an emotional mess. “Di? Time to get, luv.” He gently stroked the back of his hand slowly down her cheek over and over, trying to coax her awake, deciding he couldn’t help if he didn’t know what ailed her.

Indivara came to with a sort of woozy fuzziness that told her she’d fainted, though her brain wasn’t working enough at present for her to comprehend that. Her eyes fluttered open, but they were vague and couldn’t see more than the fuzzy outline of tanned skin and dark hair. Her eyebrows drew together, and she mumbled a soft, “Val?” with such confusion that she obviously didn’t believe it was him at all. Moaning softly, Indivara lifted a hand to her forehead, fingers brushing against R’vi’s as she touched her temple. Did she hit her head?

“Not,” she said softly, woozy. The hold was all wrong for V’ler, and he didn’t smell like her mate. But the voice she could hear murmuring was familiar and prevented her from freaking out as she blinked, trying to clear her head. Her hand dropped from her temple to her stomach, fingers splayed as she felt the growing bump there. There was a niggling worry about the spawn within; just because Indivara didn’t want it, didn’t mean she wanted something bad to happen now she was stuck with it! Besides, Rhaedalyn would be so upset with her if she lost the baby!

“Val?” She asked, this time her gaze finally managing to focus on the twin that was holding her – normally she could tell them apart without any issue, but her head was too woozy at the moment and all she could tell was that it was a Vian and that that was a good thing. “Where?” Where was she? Where was V’ler? Why was she cold? Indivara shivered and curled into R’vi. “M’head hurts.” She said softly, shifting her hand again to poke gently at the back of her head. It didn’t feel like she’d hit it, more like a pounding headache. Her stomach coiled unhappily and Indivara gave a disgruntled sound of discomfort.

Vara? Venseth asked quietly, feeling her mind clearing up. She’d fainted before, and he’d had to be told by her about how he couldn’t rush in and answer all her confused thoughts, that she had to take a few minutes to get herself under control and her head on straight so everything went how it was supposed to. Indivara’s gaze shifted towards the weyr where she knew the two blue dragons were curled up together. “I’m okay, love,” Indivara murmured softly, before shifting her gaze to R’vi.

“Getting up,” she warned him quietly, before wriggling out of his arms and sitting up properly. Indivara curled her legs under herself, and sighed, rubbing her temple. “Sooo,” Indivara drawled, drawing out the ‘o’ sound as she gently hugged her growing belly. “How are you today?”

One would think that being friends with Indivara meant he was always prepared to find her hurt or sick. He honestly was prepared for when she was sick, knowing how to get her to a Healer or one to her and which herbs and medicine to make sure she took at the right time and even helped with changing out the cloth on her head when she had a fever. Finding her on the ground and unconscious wasn't something he had run into a lot growing up himself but even if he had, this time was different. Well, if he was going to believe what Vydoriath told him that Venseth told him on their last trip to Telgar, anyway, and R'vi was inclined to believe it was true, not only because Veeth apparently chimed in on the gossip party and was dancing around in excitement, but because he could see his friend's slender form had a bit of a belly starting to show. That worried him further but Indivara was coming to and while they weren't entirely coherent, she was asking questions.

"Doesn't seem like he's here," he started with the easy question of where V'ler was. Considering the man wasn't out there with them and fussing, it was safe to assume he was out. Then again, R'vi knew about V'ler's aversion to blood so maybe passed out women also made him faint and he was lying on the ground somewhere? He is not. He went to Fort Weyr with Veeth, according to Venseth. Vydoriath's sigh at his rider's odd jumps of logic was loud and R'vi frowned slightly, but was relieved he didn't have to play Healer to two people that afternoon. The day is still young. He deserved that and probably jinxed himself to boot.

"And I'm not surprised your head hurts. The floor of the weyr, especially without a pillow, is a bit hard when your head meets it." He doubted she had been sitting on the floor when the desire to stay awake faild her, and even then, R'vi suspected it wouldn't be a soft fall for the head.

At Indivara's warning that she was getting up, R'vi leaned back from his close inspection of her head and removed his hands so he wouldn't be in her way. When she was settled on the floor across from him and trying her best to ignore what happened, she was treated with a lopsided and somewhat bewildered smile. "My day's been great so far, though I like how you go for a head start on afternoon naps. I usually take mine a couple of hours from now."

He studied her a moment longer, smile still in place to hopefully show he wasn't still worried about her and noted the way she cradled her middle and definitely believed the dragon gossip. He'd comment on that soon enough but first he had to ask the important question, and his quips had probably already given him away, but still he asked, "now, tell me which Vian I am so I know for sure your head is fine."

Indivara felt a shudder run down her spine as she shook her head mildly at R’vi, as amused by his expression as he apparently was with her attempt to change the subject. The fact that he didn’t let her succeed (not really) caused her some mild amusement instead of her usual spikey fury. “Hah, hah,” she said mildly, her tone fattened just slightly with her amusement, though she didn’t disagree that naps were good! She had taken to them a lot during her pregnancy with Varlea, but she’d also been a lot sicker carrying the girl than she currently suffered with the current growing parasite.

At the demand that she name which Vian she was sitting in front of, Indivara gave a soft laugh, but stopped quickly because it made her head pound at the temples. “Gee, I don’t know… Ny?” She opened her eyes wide and leaned forward, peering up at him playfully. “Hmm, nope!” She said, reaching forward with one hand to touch the side of R’vi’s face with soft fingers. “Definitely R’vi.” Rolling her eyes at him, Indivara sat back and folded her hands in her lap, giving him a flat look. “Really Ry,” she shook her head again, though she was honestly a little sad; she couldn’t remember the last time she’d gotten to spend time with N’vian.

“He took off with Veeth while I was in the bath,” she said absently, answering her own question of earlier about where V’ler was. She didn’t know where he was, and honestly wasn’t worried enough to quiz her dragon on it. He’d get home whenever he got home, though she was glad she wasn’t passed out on the floor for him to find. V’ler hadn’t given any indication that he was going to be the sort to get protective and fussy while she was pregnant, but she really didn’t want to tempt fate on that, either. Her nose scrunched up, wondering if she could convince R’vi to keep quiet on her passing out. Probably she could, but then there was the dragons to consider, and their armload of firelizards.

Indivara sighed dramatically and climbed to her feet. “Do you want something to drink?” She asked, brushing her hands over her hips before offering one to R’vi. “I brought some juice up earlier.” She could probably use with the sugar, anyway. “Val probably has some wine stashed away somewhere.” He wasn’t really a drinker (that she’d seen) but he was a Harper and Indivara knew B’jin drank like a fish, so she kind of assumed all harpers did. Add to it the general ability of dragonriders to put away booze like it was water in the desert and well, Indivara was sure there was wine somewhere in their weyr. Probably.

“No klah up here though,” she said, smiling slightly. The caffeine apparently disagreed with her hormones. The last time she’d had a cup, she’d just about bounced off the walls of the weyr and Val hadn’t even been able to seduce her into silence. That had been fun, if amusing and embarrassing to look back on!

R’vi somehow managed to keep a pleasant expression on his face despite being somewhat sad at her guess. He knew she was just playing with him and knew which brother she was with but what if guessing N’vian was a hint that she wished the younger twin was with her instead? He loved his brother and that was part of the problem when it came to his insecurities. They used to do everything together and he relied on his twin more than he should have. Now that they were practically strangers with how little they got to see each other, he was both a bit jealous of those that got to spend time with N’vian and somewhat hurt that people might prefer the bronzeriding Vian to the one on blue.

Indivara, however, always played by her own rules and always seemed to be exempt from the standards R’vi used on everyone else. Maybe she did want to see his brother; so did he. He wasn’t even all that jealous that she lived in the same Weyr as N’vian, mostly because R’vi might have been able to stay in Telgar if he promised to behave but the lure of sunshine and warmth was too much for him to stay. He also liked the idea of forging his own identity and felt like he was achieving that now.

R’vi almost ignored the hand extended to him but took it, not wanting to set Indivara off in some random fit of rage. He did make sure he pushed most of his weight off his free hand and used his legs a lot more than he would have if some man was helping to pull him to his feet. Indivara was petite and pregnant and had already fainted at least once that day. No way was he going to explain to her mate that she was unconscious or injured because she helped him get off the ground.

“Juice sounds good,” R’vi smiled even as he wondered if V’ler actually had wine stored somewhere. He couldn’t recall ever seeing the Harper drink. Maybe he did at gathers but R’vi didn’t think so. If he did, he sipped the same drink all night. Then again, V’ler may have also had an iron constitution and wine didn’t affect him in the slightest.

“But only if I get it for us because you’ll be sitting down.” R’vi stated as he pointed to the couch and levelled her with a look that clearly said he wasn’t going to back down from this. He wanted to make sure she wasn’t going to overdo it again and didn’t want to worry about her more than he already had. It sucked finding a friend unresponsive on the ground!

Indivara’s expression went from placid enjoyment of R’vi’s company, to flat with irritation in the small amount of time it took to process his demand that she seat herself. He was right, of course, but that did absolutely nothing to sooth Indivara’s feathers, and honestly only ruffled them more. Her eyebrows drew down and her lips flattened as she mentally prepared herself to wage war. She would have, too, if a firm Sit! hadn’t come privately from her dragon, and Indivara’s entire face contorted into a pout. “Fine,” she sulked, shoulders slumped pathetically as she dragged her feet to the couch and set herself down on it.

Pulling her feet up under her, Indivara traced the patterns in the material as she listened to R’vi potter around in the little kitchen, apparently searching for the juice or glasses, she wasn’t sure which but could tell by the way he was trying to be subtle about opening and closing cabinets; she resisted the urge to shout out instructions to him, and instead curled against the arm of the couch, re-braiding her hair and tying it off with a leather tie. She gave a sort of dry smile when R’vi finally wandered back, and took the glass he offered her without (vocal!) comment. “Thanks,” was added, though, and she sipped the juice.

“How’s life?” Indivara asked after a lengthy but not uncomfortable silence, looking over at R’vi with genuine interest. She felt like she hadn’t seen her fellow bluerider in Turns – though surely it couldn’t have been that long, right? – and she was honestly curious about what he’d been up to, though she suspected it was his brother that had brought him to Telgar; that did leave her wondering why he was in her weyr and not N’vian’s? Venseth’s guilt and worry tipped her off pretty quickly, though, and Indivara reached out to reassure him that she was fine, and while she would have rather no one found her (or not fainted at all, honestly) she was glad it was R’vi and not Val. That would have been… Well, she wasn’t sure, but it likely wouldn’t have been a good situation.

“You should drop by more often!” Indivara added, frowning grumpily at R’vi for a moment, as if it were all his fault they hadn’t gotten to hang out in recent times, and not at least one-third hers (Val wasn’t getting off scot-free there!) since she was Weyrbound until the parasite was born. She couldn’t wait to hand the little bawling stink-maker over to Rhaedalyn, though she was wondering how they would get the infant from Telgar to Fort without Rhaedalyn or R’nya having a panic attack about the baby traveling between. Indivara was pretty sure if she wrapped it up and put it under her shirt, it wouldn’t be too bothered by traveling between. Hopefully…

R’vi happily flopped on the other end of the couch after suffering in the kitchen. Seriously, who put their cups there? At least Indivara had remained seated though he knew she knew he struggled a bit from the face she was giving him when he finally emerged with the drinks. She would have been faster at the task but his conscious was happy she wasn’t on her feet and serving him. She even had some colour back in her cheeks – which R’vi suspected was from holding in her anger at being made to sit her ass down and not move.

“Life is hot! In several ways,” R’vi laughed and shook his head before Indivara could comment on that, “yes, I’m a whore and enjoying all the hot and sexy interactions with everyone but mostly it’s actually hot in Ista. It’s getting to the point where I might take M’ris up on his offer to let us relocate to the other Weyrs for a while.” He doubted he actually would, even if the Weyr was a bit quieter than usual with less people there and less interaction in general as everyone hid away in shady and slightly cooler areas. Moving to Telgar had its obvious perks though, and Indivara had pointed it out.

“I’ve tried to visit several times in recent memory but Veeth always tells us when you’re a bit too preoccupied with your mate for visitors to pop in unexpectedly,” he laughed again and took a sip of the juice. He was happy that Indivara was happy, happier even. He didn’t know if something had changed between the couple but when he had managed to cross paths with them since the ice skating fiasco, they both actually seemed interested in each other instead of being tolerating friends.

“You were also in lessons one of the times I thought about visiting when I was here. I watched you from a nearby ledge for a bit though. You seem to enjoy it!” R’vi was so proud of Indivara. She didn’t get her bronze dragon but she got an amazing blue dragon which was special in itself and now she was working on her goal of being a Weyrlingmaster. He’d never set such goals for himself and knew he was just sort of dancing through life but it seemed to work for him and he figured as long as he didn’t get in anyone’s way, he could continue to do so.

Indivara laughed softly, shaking her head, not at all surprised R’vi was whoring himself out and enjoying it. Well, so long as he was enjoying it, she wished him all the fun in the world with his antics. She was pleased that, overall, the effects of both their lives had simmered their own relationship into playful flirty and the easy companionship that had been there in the early days. She liked R’vi, but she wasn’t comfortable with him like that. Definitely not the way Val made her feel. Her gaze drifted towards the hall that lead to the dragon’s ledge, and she felt Venseth’s gentle touch. I’ll let you know when they’re home, he said softly, as if she wouldn’t feel Veeth bombard her with the latest gossip!

“You’d be welcome company,” Indivara said honestly, though she didn’t offer the bluerider the use of their couch. Mostly because she was still enjoying the changes in her relationship with Val and felt it would be awkward to make eyes at her mate when there was company sprawled and snoring on the couch. Besides, Val probably wouldn’t appreciate that kind of background noise when he was trying to write. Which really, should have made Indivara offer to have R’vi crash on the couch, but she was in much too mellow of a mood at present to seriously consider teasing Val like that. Never mind the fact that she could be deliriously happy or hysterical or Faranth knew what emotion within the next half hour!

The gentle teasing about her being ‘preoccupied’ with Val made Indivara blush and she ducked her head, wondering how much information Veeth had given away. He was a sweet dragon, and she knew he’d never do anything to upset her or Val, but he was also too innocent sometimes, and probably wouldn’t realise he’d said something that would upset them, until it upset them and he learned. In reality, he probably didn’t say much more than ‘not now’, but Indivara still squirmed uncomfortably and refused to look at her friend until he changed the subject to her learning to be a Weyrlingmaster, and she looked up suddenly, face bright with excitement.

“Yes!” She squealed, both hands clasped around her half-empty glass of juice. “Mulrissa’s gold, Bedith, flew recently. You probably heard. Anyway, I’ll be teaching their class!” Huge blue eyes looked at R’vi with excitement and anticipation. She was thrilled with the invitation to be the teacher of the class, and even with her overworking herself to fainting just before R’vi dropped by, Indivara didn’t see how it could happen teaching a group of kids; she even knew being pregnant was exhausting but it wasn’t enough to put a damper on her excitement. Besides, she could sit down any time she wanted to! “We haven’t called in the candidates yet, ‘cause you guys have a clutch soon at Ista, but we’ll steal them once it Hatches and I think the Searchers will be going out soon?” She shrugged, not really caring about that part of it all. She was just looking forward to terrorising the Candidates!

R’vi couldn’t stop the smile that formed at seeing Indivara so excited. She deserved the happiness and getting what she wanted. The girl was constantly ill when they were younger and then there was the way she was mauled at a Hatching, leaving her scarred. Not to mention the mental scarring done when she kicked an egg that refused to hatch and the mess that came out of it. It really did seem like she had found her path and all of her perseverance had paid off. Seeing her happy and in her element might have been enough to get him to transfer Weyrs but he didn’t say that. He loved Indivara, as his closest friend, but he had long gotten over his delusions of her returning any feelings that would have elevated that relationship and knew she wouldn’t want to hear such things, even if it was said in jest.

Instead he laughed as he replied, “it’d be worth the transfer back here just to watch unsuspecting Candidates react to you. I know you’re already plotting new ways to scare the kids and it would be entertaining as all get out to watch.” R’vi’s grin widened as he teased her and easily imagined what would go down. The kids from the holds would never know what hit them.

“You better tell me when the Hatching begins and when you’re going to start training them on the big stuff. I want to see you shine and them tremble,” again, he was grinning and a laugh was forming. As long as he didn’t get roped into transferring so he could be her assistant, he’d gladly watch her from the sidelines.

Indivara flashed a wicked grin, perhaps the first time she’d pulled such an expression and not been internally horrified by the way it twisted her scarring. She lifted a hand, brushing her fingers along the line that dipped over her lip and she tossed a wink at R’vi, not bothering to add any words to the action. She’d been fuelling rumours about how she’d gotten her scars since she started training with B’jin. Of course, the vast majority of individuals knew the story, but she’d also been mangled for so long that even those who knew, were prone to exaggeration. She had found it a great deal of entertainment to make up stories and watch them grow between the candidates.

It was especially fun when the riders got in on it, and added quips here or there that caused things to just bloom out of proportion. Of course, there were always those who came along with their nose in the air and tried to set things right, but they never really succeeded. Especially since Indivara hadn’t voiced a whole-truth about what had happened in Turns. Bits of the truth? Sure! But the whole thing? Or enough pieces to put together the whole truth? Don’t be absurd!

“You’d get bored watching me taunt kids all day,” she teased, shaking her head slightly at R’vi before sipping her water. She did eye him playfully over the rim of her glass as she lowered it slowly though. “I’m sure you can find other ways to make them tremble,” she said, drawing the final word out with a look of mock innocence, as if she wasn’t implying anything at all with such a sentence or emphasis.

“I’ll send Queenie with a note whenever stuff is going to happen that’s worthy of an audience,” she promised. He’d hear about the Hatching, no doubt and she definitely wanted all of her friends to be there. Indivara wasn’t fond of Hatchings, for reasons her close friends were well aware of. The only good thing that had ever happened to her on the Sands, was Impressing Venseth!

"Just doing my part for the Weyrs," R'vi answered as innocently as one such as he could before sipping his water and trying to keep up the innocent front. It didn't last long before he was smirking at the way Indivara called him out. Oh yes, he did indeed enjoy making people tremble with pleasure and he loved that Indivara's wicked sense of humour was trying to be subtle. It was cute, really, when she was always so brutally honest and didn't know how to be coy. "Not all of us are born leaders like Ny or teachers like you... well, I guess I am teaching a lot of them some very useful Weyr-life information, but still. My point remains."

Mentioning his brother suddenly brought to mind something he secretly worried about with each Hatching, though the odds were low on it happening. His smile slowly faded as he thought on it for several moments and then looked from the glass that had drawn his attention as he thought to Indivara. "You..." he hesitated after all in what he wanted to ask, suddenly feeling embarrassed and even worried that it would remind Indivara about how weak and fragile he actually was beneath the flirting and lazy ways. But the fact that it was Indivara was what made him go through with it anyway. She might tease him, as was their nature, but she also understood from her own traumas.

"You don't have any siblings or especially close friends in your class, do you?" R'vi would never forget the night Nyvian Impressed without him. True, a lot of the events were kind of blurred once the last dragonet made its grand appearance and didn't bond to him but the feeling of despair and immense loneliness, even fear, were strong and stayed with him for months. He could still remember how it felt sometimes, late at night when it was so silent in the Weyr that he felt like the only one that lived there. Vydoriath was always quick to pipe up in those times and brush away those emotions but not everyone had a dragon yet and if one sibling Impressed while the other didn't, they might be just as lost as he had been. If there were any Candidates like that, maybe he'd try to befriend them and be there for them in case disaster struck.

Indivara laughed softly, shaking her head at R’vi and then leaning forward to rest her elbows on her knees, after putting her almost-empty glass of juice on the floor, and then her chin in her hands. She watched R’vi’s face quietly as he seemed to ponder on something, resisting the urge to tease him about thinking too hard and hurting himself. The single word that fell away into silence had Indivara raising an eyebrow at him; “Go on,” she said mildly, and then waited.

The question that finally was aired had Indivara sitting up straight and she stared blankly at R’vi for several moments, not sure what to make of his question. “No,” she said flatly, frowning in confusion and more than a little irritation. “Landslide.” She said stiffly, refusing to add any more than that. Her younger brother and her mother had been the only relatives she had, aside from Varlea, and Indivara knew R’vi wasn’t talking about her daughter. Besides family, all of Indivara’s closest friends had Impressed, most of them well before Venseth had found her.

Indivara stood up, irritated at R’vi’s question, irritated at her emotional response to it, and suddenly irritated that Val still wasn’t home. What was he doing? He’d been gone for hours. Indivara huffed to herself and stalked off towards the kitchen before stalking back and snatching up her cup from the floor with a filthy look at R’vi. She made her way back to the kitchen and refilled her cup; drinking half of it, Indivara returned to her spot on the couch and sat down, still glaring daggers at R’vi.

R’vi sat back against the couch, relieved when Indivara said there weren’t any siblings in her class. He hadn’t realised how tense he had been when he asked the question and kind of liked how much he worried about complete strangers. Perhaps he wasn’t as selfish as some, including himself, called him. He was so caught up in that relief that he didn’t notice the way she gave her denial and stared at Indivara in confusion when she mentioned the landslide.

What did that have to do with anything? He supposed she meant that some of the weyrbrats had lost their siblings that horrible night so they now Stood alone. Certainly Holders didn’t allow the Searchriders to take more than one of their children at a time, if at all. He was going to nod in understanding for her one word reply, knowing Indivara had also lost family that night, when he caught the dirty looks she kept giving him.

What did he do now?

R’vi frowned, deep in thought, as Indivara walked to and fro, doing whatever it was she was doing. He’d asked a simple enough question and didn’t recall opening his mouth to stick his foot in it at any other point in their conversation. When Indivara sat back down and continued to glare at him, R’vi started to feel extremely uncomfortable. He had upset her and didn’t know why. Perhaps he should just go. Silently he stood up and walked to the kitchen, finishing his juice as he went. The glass was left on the counter and by the time he returned to the sitting area, a realisation dawned on him.

“A misunderstanding,” he mumbled and shook his head sadly. He couldn’t recall a time Indivara had ever misunderstood what he said or his intentions. She may have played at it, just to rile him up, but the laugh that always followed let him know what was going on. This time was different. She honestly didn’t know what he had been asking and he felt a tightening in his chest. Was he losing her again? She had never wanted him beyond a friendship despite his best efforts and when all the trauma in her life kept piling up, it was V’ler that she turned to. Some of it was his own fault, he knew that. He was the one that chose a Weyr away from friends and his own twin brother.

“I was asking about the kids you’ll have in your class. If any of them were related to each other. I worried one might Impress without the other… like Ny and me,” he was still hurting and spoke softly, eyes on the ground as he tried to find any excuse to explain what had happened between them. Everything was so good minutes ago, just like the old days. But like some of the more recent old days, those fears of being alone were creeping back. Everyone had their purpose, end goals to run towards, and he would be forgotten, left behind, like when Nyvian found his bronze dragonet and barely acknowledged his brother after that. He knew that wasn’t fair to Nyvian; a dragonet took a lot of work and attention in the early months, something R’vi learned firsthand when he finally Impressed but that didn’t ease the pain and fear.

“Maybe you did hit your head when he fainted and you’re not thinking clearly,” R’vi grasped at the idea like a lifeline thrown to him as he drowned in his beloved ocean. He didn’t like what he had become in his darker days and didn’t want to slip back into them because he obviously didn’t know how to form a sentence that made sense to other people.

“And I know you’re pregnant, Di. Maybe you’re overworking yourself and need to rest. You should rest. Vydoriath can keep Venseth company and I’ll stay out here until V'ler gets back in case you need anything or feel sick.” R’vi offered his best attempt at his usual smile, the one that showed him happy and carefree, not at all offended, worried, or upset. He was a Vian after all! The sexier one, the wilder one. What were deep emotions, right?

Indivara’s frown grew when she heard R’vi mumble something as he stood halfway between herself and the kitchen, and she pursed her lips in irritation, just knowing he was bitching about her but not with enough guts to come out and say what was on his mind. She glared at him, calculating the distance between them and how fast she would have to move to get in a good kick to the shins before he bounced out of reach or held her off him. His sudden and quiet explanation had her thoughts scattering and she stared at R’vi blankly.

“Oh,” she said softly, still staring at R’vi blankly, her eyebrows finally pulling together in confusion as she stared at him. In typical Indivara fashion, her mood flipped and her anger vanished as swiftly as her thoughts had been sent fleeing. Rising, Indivara did close the distance between them, but not at all with the intention of violence as she slipped up against her fellow bluerider and wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her cheek against his chest. It wasn’t a verbal apology, but it was as good – if not better – than most people got from her.

“Maybe,” she allowed, not moving from her comfortable position of cuddled up against R’vi, eyes closed and breathing soft as she relaxed. Until he spoke again, and she pulled back, scowling up at him again, but this time there was that sparkle of mischief behind her apparent anger. “I don’t need a babysitter,” she said snidely, grimacing at R’vi. But then she cuddled back up against him and settled her ear so she could hear his heartbeat. “But stay,” she added, nuzzling him affectionately. She ignored his encouragement to go and rest; she didn’t like being in bed without knowing Val would be there soon, and it was very much the wrong time of the day for him to crawl in with her, even if he were home.

Indivara pouted against R’vi, sulking quietly to herself. “Venseth’s fault,” she added randomly, releasing one arm from where it was wrapped around R’vi to brush her fingers over her belly. Then she slung it back around her friend’s waist, clinging very much like a limpet. “He wouldn’t let me, you know. But Quennell says I’ll be fine to do the Weyrlingmaster stuff, and the Weyrleader is okay with it.” Well, he had seemed to be, anyway. Indivara didn’t really care, and B’jin had vouched for her. “Baby is due at the end of the Turn,” she added, not at all aware she was babbling. “Rhaedalyn is going to take it. Even though she’s having a baby soon, too.” Indivara was completely oblivious to exactly how soon ‘soon’ was.

“Nah, but I do, right?” R’vi teased softly as he held Indivara close. “You’ll be keeping me out of trouble if I stay a bit.” Probably not true since he’d find new ways of getting into trouble. Like trying to peek at V’ler’s secret notes about songs or gossip or whatever it was he always seemed to be jotting down when given a chance. Now that he had had that thought, R’vi was seriously contemplating it just to see the look on V’ler’s face when he returned. Maybe they could get the dragons in on a prank where they told him when the other bluerider returned so R’vi could run over to the desk and pretend to poke through papers while Indivara pretended to be asleep to further add to it. A wicked grin started tugging at the corners of his mouth but he didn’t voice his idea, yet, especially when Indivara started babbling about the baby.

He was kind of surprised that she was giving this child up as well. With Varlea, Indivara was still young, not in a steady place with the relationship or in general thanks to the constant upheaval at Katila. She was settled now with V’ler and he didn’t do much so he could raise the kid while Indivara raised other kids into becoming proper dragonriders. Then again, it was V’ler and Indivara and neither really seemed to have much interest in kids—not that he was one to talk. R’vi had dodged someone trying to foist a kid on him before and had Tala mention her kid was his but she was fine without his help. Maybe one day they would all be a bit more comfortable around tiny humans. For now, he was way too self-absorbed but at least he knew that.

“Like pregnancy will slow you down. I can’t think of anything that would,” R’vi complimented his friend, knowing that she was like them all and had her fragile moments but she was resilient and never stayed down for long. But he did worry about the actual birthing. Indivara was tiny and was constantly ill when younger and the first pregnancy had been hard on her. If Quennell thought she could handle another one, R’vi knew he should believe the wizened old Healer but it was still hard. He wouldn’t voice that concern though, knowing Indivara well enough to know she’d already worried about it herself and would smack him for doubting her.

“How about I refill our drinks and we go lounge with the dragons for a while?” It was partly a ploy to make sure she got some fresh air to ensure she really was feeling better after fainting but also an innocent afternoon of relaxing with the dragons, maybe napping in the sunlight. Of course it ruined his plan to prank V’ler but maybe they’d move back in by then or he’d just have to remember to do it on another visit.

Early on, when her relationship with glee was still platonic, Indivara had quickly discovered that she enjoyed being held. It made her feel safe, and warm, without her ever feeling as if she was in a position of vonrability . Indivara didn’t do weak - or at least, not on view of other people.

Being held by R’vi was very different from Val; their entire build was so different and Indivara felt even smaller than usual, pressed up against R’vi. It wasn’t even that he was taller than Val (she figured they were about the same) but the overall build of his body was different. And his smell. And the soft rumble she could hear in his chest when he laughed and spoke.

It wasn’t a bad difference - it was still comfortable, because it was R’vi - but it wasn’t Val, and that just meant it wasn’t quite as good. Nonetheless, Indivara nuzzled against R’vi as he spoke, only half listening.

“Too little,” Indivara giggles, making a very rare quip about her height. “Not enough distance between down and up.” Which was true enough! When you didn’t even make five feet, it wasn’t like there was a whole lot of you to fall down, or to pick back up! Still giggling to herself about her witty comeback (that she definitely would have committed murder over if voiced by anyone but herself) Indivara agreed easily to R’vi’s suggestion, and let him go slowly.

“I don’t know where I left my cup,” she said, face an expression of blank confusion. What had she done with it? Did she finish it? What had she even been drinking? Indivara’s eyebrows furrowed and she turned around in a slow circle, looking confused. Her face lit up when she spotted it, then tumbled into a scowl as she picked it up. Stupid cup! Without comment, she handed it to R’vi.

“I’ll meet you out there,” she said lightly, smiling and leaning up to place a soft kiss on R’vi’s cheek. Shooting him another placid smile, Indivara wandered over to the couch, humming one of Val’s tunes under her breath as she yanked a couple of throws off the piece of furniture, and lugged them out to the dragons. It wasn’t cool enough to curl up under them, but t was cool enough that sitting on cold rock sounded unpleasant to Indivara.

——————-

Loopy from Ned’s and it’s after midnight and on the phone because Indi thinks I’m her bitch. Lol. I’ll fix typos and shit tomorrow xD
