It had been four days since M’dox had last seen T’bia, which meant it was four days since the picnic and four days since T’bia had kissed him. And he’d kissed T’bia back and then they had kissed more and M’dox still couldn’t believe it wasn’t a dream. It felt like a dream. Riquarth had been perfectly happy to confirm the kissing had in fact taken place every time M’dox questioned it, voice rumbling in amusement at his rider’s disbelief.

But now M’dox wasn’t sure what to do. He wanted to spend time with T’bia again — there didn’t have to be kissing, M’dox would be perfectly happy to just spend time with his friend — but they didn’t usually hang out together this soon after something, at least not since the Hold trip three days after meeting. So M’dox agonized over a reason to invite T’bia somewhere. There wasn’t a Gather coming up, was there? Or something? M’dox sighed and threw down the shirt he was trying to convince a stain to come out of. Because even his chores wanted to remind him of T’bia today, his lack of clean clothing sending him to the laundry room where he and T’bia first met. There were other laundry rooms around the weyr, but M’dox always gravitated towards this one. He sighed again and picked the shirt back up, deciding it was de-stained enough for now and could just be tossed in with the light colored ‘to wash’ pile.

After another minute of sorting, M’dox started when the door to the room creaked open. His heart raced, both with the usual anxiety over people he didn’t know but also the slim possibility it might be T’bia. It wasn’t. The opening door revealed a middle aged women with a large basket, full of what looked to be sheets. She noticed M’dox’s eyes on her, and turned to smile at him, saying hello. M’dox smiled shyly back with a mumbled but polite hello. He didn’t know her, but she was almost certainly one of the Lower Caverns women who did many of the weyr housework. Having determined the newcomer wasn’t someone to worry about (she immediately went over to a warm water tub and started putting the sheets into it), M’dox returned to pining sorting his laundry. He needed to think of a good reason to spend time together! He couldn’t just show up at T’bia’s weyr and say ‘hey, I missed you and wanted to hang out!’

You could actually do just that, you know. Riquarth said, clearly entertained. M’dox frowned, ’No, I can’t. Can I?’ Could he? It was a thing to visit friends just because, wasn’t it, though M’dox had never done it. Too worried he’d be turned away or go to the wrong door (not that he had many friends to visit, but still). It was okay to visit friends. He and T’bia were friends. Friends who had kissed now. Kissing friends? M’dox fell into a swirl of thoughts trying to puzzle out how all this fit together and whether or not he should visit T’bia. Riquarth sighed. His rider had done so well the other day, but it seemed he was stalling. Ah, well, that’s why M’dox was lucky he had Riquarth, the brown thought, reaching out to a familiar mind.

Jycenth, if your rider isn’t busy, now might be a good time to do laundry. Riquarth said mildly, sending his blue friend the image of the laundry room and M’dox’s large pile of things to wash. They had some time, considering M’dox had almost his entire wardrobe with him.

T’bia had been positively floating since his picnic with M’dox. He’d gone to see R’nd the day after the picnic, gushing to the bluerider about everything that had happened. The day after that he’d been kept busy because Jycenth had been in need of a full-attention bath, and scrubbing and then oiling the dragon had kept T’bia occupied for the majority of the day, even if he’d still been floating around his bonded and babbling gleefully about the picnic.

The third day he’d woken up, curled up in bed, cuddling his blanket and smiling to himself. The day had been spent being social; T’bia didn’t have many close friends, and he had a lot of acquaintances that liked to mock him, but he had a few people he felt he was if not friends with, at least wasn’t just on a name-basis-only level? He’d enjoyed sitting around in the dining hall with them, chattering and eating and looking up hopefully every time he realised someone was coming through the Hall. He hadn’t seen M’dox, though, and by the time the day was over and he was off to bathe before bed, T’bia was intently aware of how much he wanted to see the brownrider again.

T’bia liked M’dox. He’d liked him because he was friendly and nice and polite, but now he really liked him; he was still friendly and nice and polite, but T’bia also thought he was beautiful and his lips tasted so nice and T’bia pouted as he cleaned up his living area, putting away some items that had strayed from where they were supposed to be kept. He really wanted to see his friend again, and he really hoped there would be more of the kissing, too, because he missed that, too! Sighing dramatically to himself, T’bia was interrupted by Jycenth’s amusement, and he pouted in the direction of his dragon.

You know his weyr is within walking distance, love. Why don’t you go visit him? Jycenth found T’bia’s internal debate endearing as the young man continued to pout and talk himself out of why visiting would be a good idea. The fact that Riquarth took that moment to reach out to him delighted Jycenth, and he laughed softly. I will send him down, Jycenth responded, his gentle voice riddled with amusement as he returned Riquarth’s image with one of T’bia pouting up at him. What would these poor humans do without their dragons?

If you’re not going to visit him, please do your laundry love. I can smell your clothing from here. For a dragon who was usually ridiculously sweet and gentle, the teasing words came across almost harsh and T’bia’s eyes widened; his clothing must really smell if Jycenth was telling him to do his laundry! Running around rapidly to collect up everything that wasn’t neatly folded away, T’bia shoved it all into his dirty laundry basket and quickly dashed out of the room, sending an apologetic thought back to his dragon.

Jycenth cringed as he reached out to Riquarth again. He thinks I think he smells now, he sighed, amused but embarrassed about causing his rider any sense of distress. Granted, that was washed away by Jycenth’s bark of laughter when T’bia pushed his way into the laundry room backwards, and turned around to see M’dox’s back.

T’bia paused, blinking in surprise; he could feel Jycenth’s delighted amusement and his own heart soared, even as he gave a squeaking little squeal of delight and T’bia dropped his basket. Completely oblivious of the woman on the other side of the room, T’bia threw himself across the room to M’dox, wrapping his arms around the other man’s neck from behind and leaning over one shoulder to plant a joyful kiss on M’dox’s cheek. “Hello!” he chirped, nuzzling M’dox’s cheek with his nose.

Excellent, Riquarth said nodding, pleased that he and Jycenth had the same thoughts about this whole thing, namely that their riders were a bit hopeless and needing the occasional nudge from the two of them. The brown couldn’t help but chuckle at Jycenth’s dilemma, reassuring the blue that he would certainly be able to convince T’bia otherwise in no time.

M’dox, perfectly unaware of his dragon’s meddling, didn’t even look up when he heard the door opening again, figuring it was probably another woman with sheets and currently absorbed in making sure the pockets on the pair of pants he was holding were empty before putting it in water. The noise whoever it was made had him pausing in his task, but before he could turn around to look at them M’dox felt someone come into contact with him and he froze, a spike of panic momentarily rising before he recognized the voice.

“Tbia!” He said, slowly relaxing into his friend’s touch as the fear subsided, equal parts elated and relieved. “Hi,” M’dox blushed, turning his face into T’bia’s nuzzling and smiling widely up at the bluerider. The laundry he was holding was discarded so M’dox could spin around and look at T’bia properly. “I was just thinking of you,” he admitted, blushing even harder. Trying to cover up his embarrassment, and maybe make T’bia not realize exactly what he’d said, M’dox leaned up to kiss him, twining his arms around T’bia’s shoulders.

Of course, the moment he broke the kiss M’dox saw movement out of the corner of his eye and remembered there was someone else in the room. The woman was still doing her laundry, but she had definitely looked over at them and M’dox turned absolutely red at the thought, eyes flicking over to her. He wasn’t ashamed about kissing T’bia or anything! M’dox most certainly wasn’t, he just… well, he was a rather private person and the idea of kissing in front of someone he didn’t know mortified him just a little bit. Still flushing brightly M’dox buried his face into T’bia’s shoulder, hoping that maybe if he couldn’t see her he could pretend she wasn’t there and focus on how very, very nice it was to see T’bia again, and how ridiculously relieved he was that T’bia had kissed him first — that meant it wasn’t just a random fluke the other day, T’bia still liked him and wanted to kiss him! Which was great, because M’dox still very much liked T’bia and wanted to kiss him too. Though he wasn’t sure he wanted to keep doing it with an audience.

The way M’dox froze when T’bia threw himself on him caused the young bluerider some distress, and he probably would have taken back everything he’d done and said, if M’dox hadn’t so quickly relaxed and clearly been happy to see him. T’bia breathed a subtle sigh of relief, his heart pounding at the terror that split second had imparted on him. The belief – if only for a small moment – that M’dox didn’t like him or want him around had been terrifying. At the same time, though, T’bia could understand M’dox’s reaction! He’d have done the same thing if he was glomped without warning.

“Hi,” T’bia parroted back, giggling, face lighting up when M’dox said he’d been thinking of him. He was about to say he’d been thinking of the brownrider, too, when M’dox was suddenly kissing him and T’bia found that to be a much better way to say hello than using words! Parting his lips as all the things M’dox had taught him last time – the first time – they’d been kissing flooded back, T’bia hummed happily, smile fighting for release under his otherwise occupied lips. He pouted playfully when the kiss broke, though he was pleased enough to take in some air more easily!

T’bia followed M’dox’s gaze when the brownrider turned red, and he spotted the lady off in her own section. T’bia giggled, combing his fingers through M’dox’s hair as he winked at the woman, before turning his attention back to his friend. Born and raised in Katila, T’bia had no issues with modesty (he actually didn’t have a lot of it, honestly) but he found M’dox’s obvious embarrassment both endearing and absolutely precious; it also had him realising with a start that his friend was Hold bred and raised, and kissing other men wasn’t something they embraced. Poor M’dox!

“She doesn’t care,” T’bia said gently, lowering his head to whisper breathily against M’dox’s ear in a move that was probably more erotic than T’bia could have ever planned. “Nobody does,” he said honestly, before giggling and lifting his head up again, fingers still playing in M’dox’s hair as he glanced up to see the woman had left. Very sweet of her! “Well. I care!” He said happily, eyes sparkling and smile wide and bright.

M’dox whined softly at T’bia’s giggling, shoving his face more firmly into T’bia’s shoulder, the sound vibrating against T’bia. Someone else being there had just surprised him! It shouldn’t have, since M’dox had seen the woman enter and knew she was there, but he’d been so excited when he’d realized T’bia was there he completely forgot about her.

“I know,” he said quietly, shivering a little at the breath on his ear. And he did know, really. M’dox knew that the Weyr didn’t care about him kissing T’bia, or about him kissing anyone really, but turns of living where people cared, people really, really cared meant that part of him still expected to get beat up if someone saw, or have his father yell at him about how he thought he had one daughter, not two. His stomach twisted uncomfortably, a common side effect of thinking of home, and M’dox tried to shake the worry off. T’bia was right. No one here cared. Except, as T’bia pointed out, T’bia himself. M’dox smiled, face still against T’bia’s shoulder, enjoying the way T’bia was petting his hair for a moment before finally leaning back to look at T’bia’s face, the twisting in his stomach was replaced by a swooping feeling at how happy T’bia looked.

“I’m glad you care,” M’dox said, moving his arms down to loop around T’bia’s waist, “I do too.” He smiled at his friend, taking a moment to erase the embarrassment, worry, and discomfort with how happy being around T’bia made him and just breathe. “Thank you,” he whispered, not for anything in particular, just for… for being T’bia, perhaps. The words were followed by another kiss, this one much quicker. As M’dox pulled back from the kiss he managed to glance over T’bia’s shoulder, which revealed that the woman had left. The realization brought a bit of a blush back but also relief. T’bia may be right that no one cared if they kissed, but M’dox was still shy about being so personal in public. Her absence also reminded M’dox where they were, including the fact that he still had laundry to do.

He leaned back, giving T’bia a sheepish grin. “I really want to continue, but I know that if don’t do my laundry right now it’s not going to get done today, and I don’t have anything clean to wear tomorrow. So,” he said, briefly tightening his grip on T’bia, “I should wash at least some of this now, and you have stuff to wash too, but when we’re done here we can maybe go back to my weyr for a bit, maybe?” M’dox asked, words getting faster as he got closer to the end of the question in his rush to get them out before he got too shy to ask. Riquarth hummed approvingly at him, proud of him for taking initiative, as M’dox looked expectantly at T’bia, holding his breath and really hoping his idea was okay, or maybe T’bia had an alternative that still involved them spending time together and probably more kissing. He’d like if T’bia pet his hair more too, M’dox thought it felt really nice and made him feel all bubbly and happy but also calmer. But he really did have to do laundry, and half of it was already in the tub with soapsand and water and even if T’bia was right and no one cared M’dox would still rather kissing be done somewhere that didn’t have the risk of anyone walking in at any time.

T’bia positively glowed at the simple words of thanks; he didn’t really know what they were for, but that didn’t matter, not really. It was just the act of M’dox pressing words of positivity and praise on him that had T’bia so happy; the young bluerider lived for the good opinions of the people he cared about and being praised – for anything and any reason – had him responding with vibrant positivity. When it came from someone he really liked, it was even more special and T’bia kissed M’dox on the nose, still beaming.

When M’dox spoke about returning to doing his laundry, T’bia pouted, though it was more playful than anything else. Then his expression soured into unhappiness. “Jycenth said I smell,” he pouted, biting his bottom lip and sulking. What if M’dox thought he smelled, too? T’bia’s eyes widened and he wriggled out of the brownrider’s arms, hugging himself tightly as if to keep any stink confined to himself and not abusing his friend’s nose. “I think I’ll have a bath, after we finish here,” T’bia said very seriously, absolutely mortified at being smelly. He could feel Jycenth trying to get a word in edge wise, but T’bia was stubbornly ignoring him. He’d said T’bia smelled. He couldn’t take it back now!

“You can come with me!” T’bia said brightly, “And then we can go… Oh!” He flushed absolutely crimson as he realised what his words could imply, eyes huge in his face. It wasn’t that he was against such thoughts, he actually thought they were really nice thoughts and he liked thinking them. But he liked thinking them in the privacy of his own bedroom when it was just him (and Jycenth, technically) and not blurting out such things in front of the person who currently starred in his fantasies. Groaning, absolutely mortified, T’bia hid his face in his hands, shoulders hunched up around his neck.

The comment about what Jycenth said confused M’dox for a moment. What did that have to do with anything, he wondered, eyebrows furrowing. He made a noise of protest when T’bia stepped away; even if he needed to do his laundry and was going to have to let go of T’bia at some point, he still didn’t want T’bia leaving his arms. He was nice and comfy there.

“I don’t think you do,” M’dox said honestly, thinking on what T’bia reported Jycenth thought. He figured he’d know, since he’d just had his face shoved right against T’bia for a bit. And he didn’t think T’bia smelled bad at all. If anything, he smelled nice. Or, well, M’dox thought he smelled nice. He was T’bia-scented, whatever that smelled like. Probably whatever soap he used was in there? M’dox didn’t really have a way of knowing, but he’d like to find out, since it meant getting to be close to T’bia a lot.

He was going to repeat that he thought T’bia smelled fine, hoping he’d be able to keep himself from revealing that he thought T’bia smelled nice (that was weird, right?) but the offer that tumbled from T’bia’s mouth had M’dox’s thoughts slamming to a halt. M’dox stared blankly at T’bia for a good moment, trying to process. Though, if the way T’bia immediately hid his face meant anything, it probably wasn’t what he meant to say. Or how he meant to say it. Or something. But what was he supposed to say? Did T’bia mean it or didn’t he? M’dox couldn’t tell.

Even after turns in the Weyr M’dox was still awkward about public baths. He still went out of his way to find small, out of the way ones to ensure he’d be alone. It was just something he was still uncomfortable about, for whatever reason. And sharing a bath with another person, specifically sharing, not just using the same bathing room at the same time, was a lot. Especially someone M’dox liked and wanted to kiss. The image of kissing T’bia in a bath started forming in his mind, and M’dox quickly shut it down before it could go any further but he was already blushing just as red as T’bia. Oh, Faranth he was not prepared for this just yet.

But T’bia looked uncomfortable, and M’dox didn’t want T’bia to feel bad about anything he said. He hadn’t said anything wrong! M’dox reached out to place a hand on one of T’bia’s shoulders, gently rubbing his thumb back and forth in what he hoped was a soothing manner. “How about we do our laundry, and you take your bath, though I don’t think you have any smell to get rid of, and I can get us food or something? And then we can meet up in my weyr. We can put the bath offer aside for today, maybe revisit it later?” he said, flushing again at the last bit. The idea of sharing a bath with T’bia was nice but far too much for him to handle just yet, but M’dox didn’t want T’bia to feel like he was being rejected, even if he hadn’t meant to make the offer in the first place. He didn’t want to make T’bia feel bad! “That work?” M’dox asked, hand still on T’bia’s shoulder and looking earnestly at the bluerider.

T’bia cringed when he half heard, half felt, M’dox shifting positions. He didn’t think M’dox would hurt him, but T’bia had been beaten up too often over too many years for the things that came out of his mouth to be comfortable with not expecting anything as a response. Some people liked the physical response, and some people just said really mean things back, and while T’bia knew M’dox wasn’t the type to do either of those (he knew it!) it was still so hard not to look up in shock when all the brownrider did was rub his arm reassuringly. But that’s what T’bia did, peering up and between his fingers with wide, cautious eyes and timid movements.

“I didn’t mean to imply,” T’bia said meekly. It wasn’t even that he’d offered for them to bathe together, so much as adding it to going back to M’dox’s weyr afterwards. That seemed so … well, it seemed to imply he though that things were going to go places that clearly neither of them were prepared to go; yet? “R’nd and I used to take baths, and we’d talk,” he whispered, eyes wide as he peered up at M’dox from his hunched position, trying to explain. There had been several times when he and the other bluerider had found nice hot springs to soak in while T’bia peppered his mentor with questions and sought answers to everything and anything. It seemed a good place to him for talking!

“Just talk!” he added suddenly and empathically, because everyone knew what R’nd had been like before B’jin and while T’bia had crushed – hard – on the other bluerider, nothing like that had ever happened. Even if T’bia had desperately at least wanted to kiss R’nd. Maybe he still did, a little bit. He thought it would be a nice way to say ‘thank you’ to R’nd for everything he’d done for T’bia, and T’bia knew R’nd would understand that, because that had been one of their topics of choice, once upon a time.

Taking a deep breath, T’bia finally unfolded himself and stood up a little, though he was still a bit pink in the face. “That would be nice,” he said softly, though he wasn’t sure if he was talking about their current plan of attack, or the prospect of bathing together in the future. Either way, T’bia smiled gently as he stepped back into M’dox’s personal space, and lifted one hand to cup his friend’s face, kissing him – gentle and lingering – on the lips. He broke the kiss just moments before the woman of earlier came tottering back in, and T’bia reluctantly stepped away a bit from M’dox, his hand falling away slowly.

With their privacy once more taking a trip between, T’bia smiled warmly at M’dox before going to get his dropped laundry basket and he claimed a tub close to his friend, quickly sorting his clothing for the least number of loads, without risking anything becoming ruined. As they worked, T’bia filled most of the silence talking cheerfully about his little sisters – currently nine and eleven – and the antics they were getting up to, and how the eldest was demanding she be fostered to a Lord and Lady in Telgar, like her friend Amorandii had been, while the youngest was absolutely determined that she would become a bluerider like Indivara. It was at that point that T’bia had lowered his voice, looked around, and whispered against M’dox’s ear that his little sister wasn’t nearly as scary as Indivara was!
