So far Mulrissa had managed to avoid public areas since Bedith’s Flight. She wasn’t particularly embarrassed, though the knowing looks were sure to be there and get annoying quite quickly. At this point Rissa had decided she’d rather get a proper meal and risk the looks. She was quite hungry by then, even having eaten a light breakfast when she stopped by her sister to pick up Ginorra and let her daughter know it was safe to return to their weyr. Ginorra had been a bit hesitant, which Rissa understood, but had returned home readily enough and seemed relieved that nothing looked different. Mulrissa had neatened the place up after waking late in the morning, even replacing the bedsheets.

However, Vinorra had only had fruit in her rooms, which was not super filling after the, ah, exertions of a dragon Flight, and Mulrissa knew going to the dining room was her best bet at real food. Asking someone to bring her something to eat seemed — cowardly? More likely to start rumors? Something like that, so Rissa was determined to get her own food. She was also planning on eating to avoid her feelings, which was easier when you could refill your plate by only crossing the room.

The main feeling she wanted to avoid, so of course she kept dwelling on it, had occurred to her when she took Ginorra home; she hadn’t had sex in turns, which meant she’d had no chance of becoming pregnant and the thought of carrying a child had barely crossed her mind in all that time. It had never been relevant, not with Bedith growing up and her own lack of interest in any of the people around her. Of course, now Bedith had flown, she’d slept with a man, and there was a chance she was pregnant and Bedith wasn’t allowed to take her between as a precaution. Mulrissa really hoped T’ryn would remember to offer her a ride. It was only polite, after all, and he really was a polite young man so Rissa felt like he would. When he wasn’t completely overwhelmed by his dragon entering a Flight for the first time, in any case. Bedith said Syrendryth was still at Telgar, though he was no longer a guest in their weyr, so Rissa figured T’ryn was still sleeping in somewhere in the Weyr. She’d slept in far later than she would on any other occasion, and T’ryn was a teenager; teenagers slept in absurdly late as a general rule, so sleeping extra late for him could easily mean waking up at dinnertime.

To her surprise, Mulrissa found she wasn’t entirely opposed to the idea of having another child — how far she had come from those first few months after the Landslide — but the teenage winner of Bedith’s maiden Flight was not really an ideal choice for fathering a child. Really not ideal, a point that was made even more clear when Mulrissa reached the dining hall and saw B’jin there, guitar with him. B’jin, who, as much as Rissa liked the man and considered him a friend, was T’ryn’s step-father of sorts. Rissa hesitated, unsure whether she wanted to announce her presence to him or not. There was no way he didn’t know who won Bedith’s Flight, and she was not convinced she was ready to have that conversation. She made her way over to the food tables, filling a plate with as much food as she could fit on it, and wondered where she should sit to have the least awkward conversation. Of course, there was no possibility of her being that lucky and it only took a few moments for B’jin to realize she was there.

B’jin was in a good mood! He had had a meeting with the Weyrleader earlier in the morning, then gone home to share his news with R’nd, which obviously included several rounds of celebratory sex, before they’d decided to actually get up (again) and face the day once more. B’jin had opted for a nice bath (R’nd free, unfortunately!) before dressing and making his way lazily down to the Dining Hall for lunch. The greenrider was still happily glowing from his enjoyable morning when he loaded up a plate and settled down to eat. He looked up curiously when a young rider approached him, recognising the kid and smiled bashfully when his guitar was handed to him. He’d gotten rather drunk last night celebrating with the majority of the Weyr the successful maiden flight of Bedith.

Setting his guitar aside carefully, it was an especially treasured item now that it had cost his son his arm, B’jin glanced up when he felt a gaze on him, and his warm brown gaze flickered around for several moments before he spotted Mulrissa doing a really good job of not looking in his direction. B’jin laughed softly to himself and waited for the woman to look in his direction again. When she did, he raised his arm and his eyebrows, grinning widely and making it clear that if she didn’t come over to join him on her own terms, he’d start yelling out her name and let everyone know she was in the Hall.

Mulrissa’s apparent hesitation as she joined him wasn’t invisible to B’jin, and his expression softened from mischievous to gentle warmth. “Maiden flights leave a lot to be desired,” he said gently, his gaze drifting to her plate and taking in what it was she’d loaded onto her plate, before dropping his attention to his own plate and taking a bite of bread slathered with a thick layer of butter. Healthy eating had never been much on B’jin’s list of to-dos, and he mostly avoided getting fat by engaging in high amounts of sex with R’nd, and occasionally bathing his dragon. As a result, his figure under his clothing was a lot softer than most dragonriders, but still a hell of a lot more muscular and fitter than anyone not living in a Weyr.

“I’d tell you it gets better with age,” he said mildly, having swallowed his mouthful of food and smiling, “but that would probably be a lie. It mostly depends on who your dragon takes a shine to.” It had taken Larrikith some twenty years or so before she finally settled on a mate, and while B’jin couldn’t be happier, she still kept him on his toes by making pacts with Ayyonth and a couple of other blues. Thankfully, Veeth hadn’t taken a shine to winning a flight in quite a while, and D’hys hadn’t been within Telgar too frequently to catch when Larrikith flew, but B’jin knew it was only a matter of time. He could hear Larrikith laughing in the back of his mind, and knew she was telling Ayyonth about his thoughts.

Mulrissa could see the cheerful threat in B’jin’s eyes, and knew he would indeed loudly bring attention to her if she didn’t go see him. Not in a malicious way, of course, but he still would. And Rissa wasn’t ready for that yet, so she sighed and made her way over to him. She set her plate down next to him — not across, so she could more easily avoid eye contact if she wanted to — and nodded to him in greeting, already taking a chunk of bread with cheese and starting to eat.

“It wasn’t that bad, honestly.” She admitted, staring past her plate. “I feel like I should be less, I don’t know, having feelings about it?” Rissa shrugged, not sure how to explain how she was feeling. Fine but also in a daze. Uncomfortable and uneasy but not upset. A bit worried, but not just about herself. She remembered being a teenager, your sense of self is so complicated. Things like sex and who it’s with tend to mean a lot more to you and about you than they should. Mulrissa hated feeling so young again. She was an adult, damnit, she had teenage children of her own. Flights had been a part of her life for turns, she’d had turns to get used to the idea Bedith would Fly, she was hardly a blushing virgin, and yet she was still confused about it all. Rissa sighed and aggressively tore a slice of bread in half.

She glanced up at B’jin and managed a wry smile. “Glad you think I can handle the truth, then. Though I don’t think Bedith will be taking a shine to anybody for more than a few hours anytime soon, fickle young thing that she is.” Rissa grumbled, mentally giving Bedith a grumpy poke. The gold, for her part, very pointedly ignored her rider and continued sunning. She sighed again, and looked over at B’jin. “Any more advice for me from the voice of experience?”

B’jin shrugged some, picking up a piece of bread himself and taking a bite. He considered his companion silently while he chewed, “I hope she settles soon for you,” he said sincerely, though honestly, a settled dragon could be as uncomfortable as one that wanted to mate with any that gave Chase to her. It really did depend so much on who the other half of the pair was, and B’jin knew first hand how varied those couples could be. Soft, gentle lovers like R’nd and V’ler were rare; most people tended to be Bonded to a dragon who got … if not nasty, then very determined to win, and it could result in a rough lover. B’jin preferred the sweeter dragons, who made their rider gentle and soft handed.

“Nothing that wouldn’t have been covered in your Weyrlinghood,” B’jin said gently, “You did well though. She didn’t gorge and her Flight was a worthy length, especially for two virgin dragons.” B’jin was wondering if there had been something going on there, with N’mor and T’ryn’s bronzes winning back to back gold flights. Of course, it likely could just be the boys themselves! They were such a dedicated pair that B’jin couldn’t imagine one of them winning a flight and the other not quickly matching him!

B’jin smiled idly before his expression turned mischievous and naughty, brown eyes narrowing as he smirked at Mulrissa; he’d done his good teachery deed for the day! Time to get to the teasing! “Going to make R’nd a granddaddy?” he asked, wicked laughter in his voice. Mulrissa was an attractive woman, and T’ryn carried a lot of R’nd’s good looks (not as much as young Ayontay, but hardly lacking!) and B’jin was quite confident the pair would make very attractive children. Of course, the major attraction here was how much such an idea would fuck with R’nd. His smirk grew.

“I appreciate the thought, but with my luck Bedith will decide her ideal mate is a bronze with a rider younger than my children,” Rissa said with a sigh. And really, the odds weren’t in her favor for Bedith settling. The only golds who seemed to be content with a single bronze were Aradissicath and Mizeath. All the others were either maidens or hadn’t chosen a mate. At least the settled golds chose older bronzes, which Mulrissa would honestly prefer, so maybe Bedith would follow the example of the others. She somehow doubted it.

She nodded at B’jin’s assurance that Weyrlinghood covered Flight’s sufficiently. If anyone knew what Weyrling classes included, he would, so Rissa trusted his judgement on that. Now she just had to hope that this Clutch from two maiden dragons wouldn’t be as much of a mess as the last Clutch from two maiden dragons. And Syrendryth was Rhezalth’s clutchmate, which may mean nothing at all or could mean a lot. Rissa sighed again, before her attention snapped back to B’jin as he started teasing her.

“I would rather not,” She said mildly, raising an eyebrow at B’jin’s smirk. The man was having way too much fun with this idea. “T’ryn is a bit young still to be having children, don’t you agree?” Which, to be perfectly fair to T’ryn, was a bit hypocritical of her to say considering she’d had her first child at eighteen, but Rissa felt that your first time having sex — she didn’t have confirmation, but she was almost positive T’ryn had been a virgin based on how he acted, and wasn’t that something else to think about — was not when you wanted a child.

“You just want R’nd to feel as old as you do.” Mulrissa teased him, an expression of perfect innocence on her face. Pleased with her comeback, her expression turned serious again. “I haven’t asked him about a ride between yet, wanted to give him some time to process everything. But it’s a habit he needs to get into if Syrendryth is going to start Chasing.” Honestly, the amount of unexpected pregnancies that could be avoided if male dragonriders remembered to offer rides to the women they slept with. She laughed, a bit embarrassed, “I gave my son a similar lecture a few months ago. Guess it’s just instinct to want to give the same lecture to T’ryn too.” She blushed and focused back on eating the food she had piled on her plate.

B’jin snorted, but didn’t comment on Mulrissa’s grumble about a mate younger than her children. Even in his best moments of forced forgetfulness, B’jin was still relieved that R’nd was older than his pre-plague son (which he hadn’t told anyone else about and Faranth help Amarilla if she decided to tell someone, though B’jin deeply doubted she ever would.) so he could understand Mulrissa’s lack of desire to end up in such a situation. B’jin forcefully shoved those memories back into the locked box at the back of his mind, where they could rot without affecting his day to day life, and turned a quirky smirk at Mulrissa.

“Of course,” he said playfully, “because then I get to make him feel as young as he does me,” and he grinned wickedly, cheerful and anticipating Mulrissa’s reaction. B’jin was rather used to his friends reacting with rather dramatic horror or disgust at the idea of his and R’nd’s sex life; of course, most of those people had slept with one or both of them (but never together! The very thought mortified B’jin!) so the greenrider knew there was nothing nasty in the reactions, though he knew some people – like Valerian – were more than a little adverse to the idea. So was he - with that particular bluerider – though he honestly enjoyed teasing Valerian after Veeth won a flight. He so rarely got to pick on someone, especially post flight!

When Mulrissa seemed to think T’ryn should be getting into a habit of asking the women of dragons if they wanted a trip between, B’jin blinked at her and then gave her a sceptical look. “Why should he?” He asked frankly. True, she was a goldrider, so she couldn’t ride her own dragon between if she didn’t want a child but honestly, that was her issue. If she didn’t want a child, she should be the one asking for a trip, not the man making demands that she follow through on. “Your body,” B’jin shrugged, “If you don’t want to be pregnant, you should arrange a trip between.”

B’jin paused when she said she’d lectured her son on the whole concept, and shrugged. “If you wait around for someone to offer you a ride, you’re going to be pregnant an awful lot.” He had absolutely no pity, and seemed quite shocked by her opinion on the matter. Women were strange, strange creatures!

Laughing, Murlissa raised an eyebrow at B’jin, “Well, aren’t you sweet, helping him feel young like that.” she teased, making her voice sound as innocent as possible though her smile gave her away. Her short time Flight mothing back in Katila had not resulted in her sleeping with R’nd, and as she didn’t have a male dragon she’d never ended up with B’jin either, so she could enjoy teasing them without having to actually picture anything.

Then B’jin was confused by thinking T’ryn should offer women rides between after Flights and Mulrissa frowned at him. She didn’t think her beliefs about men offering rides was that strange or uncalled for and was rather surprised at B’jin’s reaction. “For one, it’s polite,” she started, considering her words carefully, “Like not walking out on someone while they’re still asleep. It’s a small sign of respect. Basic respect is hardly a bad thing to have or cultivate in our young people. And for another,” she continued while arranging her plate so that all bits of cheese were on a slice of bread or paired with a piece of fruit, “It gives the man more control over his own life as well. Honestly, do you all just sit around thinking ‘well, hope that woman decided she didn’t want a child and I’m not going to get a surprise in nine months?’ There’s no guarantee that a woman will want nothing to do with her child’s father, and if you don’t want the expectations of being a parent on you, does it not make sense to be more proactive in making sure you don’t become one? And yes, if a woman doesn’t want a child many will ask for rides themselves, however what if she wants a child and you don’t? If you just assume she’s gone off to get a ride between from someone else you may end up with an unexpected baby.” She shrugged.

“It’s just easier to know what you’re both planning on doing from the start. If the other person doesn’t initiate the conversation, it makes sense for you to do so. It’s less messy and complicated in the long run. And do I think women should know this as well? Yes, because again, personal responsibility. But since it takes two people to create a child, then it seems reasonable to me that both people take some responsibility for that possibility.” Did men really feel they had no part in having a child just because they didn’t carry it? What a bizarre notion.

Rissa gave B’jin a wry smile. “That’s the basics of my lecture on the topic. Apologies, but you asked.” She shrugged again. “Not something you have to worry so much about these days, hmm?” The benefits of having a mate. “Besides, I’m hardly ‘waiting around’ if I’m debating the best time to talk to him, am I?” She said finally, taking a bite of food. “I could just tell he wasn’t up for that conversation last night, so I held off asking. I was planning on talking to him later today, or perhaps tomorrow. Unless you’re volunteering Larrikith. Or I suppose I could ask R’nd to take me between on Ayyonth, though I think you’re the only one who’d have fun in that situation.”

B’jin sat through Mulrissa’s lecture with his usual placid expression, waiting for her to finish her tirade without making demands. He certainly didn’t agree with her, but he’d long been trained in how to listen to someone before drowning them in his own opinion. Harper schooling, and all that. His eyebrows did arch up slightly at some of her comments, but for the most part, he just waited. When she had finished, B’jin swallowed the piece of fruit he had been chewing on thoughtfully, and studied her in silence for a moment as he collected his thoughts.

“As a greenrider, I can tell you that I have fled from more flights than I have stayed for. I am not alone; most greenriders do. Most blue and brownriders are self-entitled bastards who will take what they want, regardless of the other man. So, fleeing before he comes to is self-preservation.” Bronzeriders, on the rare event they won, tended to be rather horrified at fucking another man and would flee themselves, but B’jin had quickly worked out that if he didn’t want to be abused, he needed to ‘come to’ as soon as possible, and preferably before the other man woke up. He’d gotten rather good at it, honestly, and it had only been in recent turns that he’d returned to the slow and leisurely return to himself after a flight with R’nd and Ayyonth.

“Apparently you seem to think we actually think about fathering children? We don’t, as a rule. It is not a thought most dragonriders care about, and certainly not one they worry about – grandchildren excluded.” He smirked slightly. “Though to be honest, I doubt even that’s a thought that’s bothering R’nd.” B’jin shrugged. “I only claimed my kids to piss off my old mate,” he said, quite honestly. Sure, it had been a blessing since then – he very much enjoyed being a father and found both his son and his daughter to be extraordinary young people that he was very proud of – but he hadn’t actually wanted them when he claimed them. He just did it to piss off N’mall. B’jin raised his eyebrows. “Most women don’t even both to let the dragonrider know he fathered their child, and those that do, I would say maybe one percent actually claim that child?”

Honestly, what world was Mulrissa living in? Had she ever walked by the creche? Even the one at Katila – especially the one at Katila – was filled with children who had no active father, and a good portion of them had no active mother either. “Weyrs are communal families.” He pointed out, quite reasonably. “No one cares who the parents are, and no child goes wanting.” B’jin had always approved of that aspect of Weyr life, honestly. Especially compared to the family life he’d been born into; one of a half-dozen children who only got enough attention to be sure they were still alive on any given day. Not that his parents hadn’t loved him and his siblings, but honestly, being raised in the Weyr seemed much more rewarding to the children.

In the end, B’jin shrugged. “We can take you between if you wish.” He paused. “I doubt you’ll be able to find T’ryn, anyway.” He said mildly. “He is busy hiding – unrelated to your Flight, I assure you.” It wasn’t his place to air the argument and misunderstanding that had occurred between the young bronzeriders, but he didn’t want Mulrissa thinking she’d caused the boy undue stress, either. None-the-less, B’jin highly doubted anyone would be able to find either of the young men any time soon. Even finding their dragon wouldn’t be a guarantee that they were within the vicinity.
