T’bia looked around the are with some satisfaction. They – he and Jycenth – were on the outskirts of the Weyr, in the opposite direction of the Hold. There was a small wooded area not far away, surrounding a stream, that T’bia had found when exploring with R’nd a few months back. He’d found that R’nd was really good at finding fun places to relax and unwind, though he hadn’t actually seen his fellow bluerider come back to the spot. Maybe he’d forgotten about it, or maybe he’d decided to leave it alone for T’bia. He wasn’t sure, but he appreciated it none the less as he had Jycenth take him there and relay the directions to Riquarth.

A slight blush coloured T’bia’s cheeks as he thought of his friend. They’d gotten to spend time together on and off ever since they’d first met doing their laundry, and T’bia found he really liked the brownrider. He was nice and didn’t treat T’bia like a leper, which he had become used to expecting other riders to do. He’d even surprised himself, when he told R’nd (and a near by B’jin) about his new friend and seen their expressions of wariness when he said it was a brownrider, and he’d come to the absent M’dox’s defence and made sure his mentors knew just how great he was. T’bia knew the reputation brownriders had for being arses, and considering some of his clutchmates, wasn’t convinced most of them weren’t. But M’dox was nice and he didn’t deserve to be lumped in with that group!

They come, Jycenth’s sweet, feminine voice wrapped around him and T’bia turned to smile at his dragon before walking out from under the trees to see Riquarth land not far away. T’bia waved in welcome to his friend and smiled, before heading back between the trees. He’d promised a surprise, and he’d gone to great lengths to make sure M’dox would be happily surprised! He’d managed to wrangle a good picnic basket from Rhaedalyn with the promise to come spend time with her soon, and he’d filled it with all his favourite foods, and what favourites he knew of M’dox’s. Some of it was from the Weyr kitchens, but a lot of it was from the Hold bakeries, too. The kitchen folk were wonderful, but there was something special about bringing the pastries they’d both had on M’dox’s first trip to the Hold!

A nice blanket was thrown across the ground, far enough from the river that the ground wasn’t damp, but close enough that they could see and hear it. The light was dappled and it was a warm day, so the shade was welcomed without making the area too chilly. T’bia, for his part, was far too naive to realise what a perfectly romantic set up it was, so he grinned at M’dox innocently when the brownrider joined him, and he clasped his hands together in front of his chest, intrigued when he saw a bottle of wine in M’dox’s hand. He’d only brought juice, because he didn’t know the first thing about wine!

“Hi!” He chirped, “Do you like it?” he asked, eyes wide with anticipation of M’dox’s response, watching him avidly. Out in the sunshine, unable to fit between the trees, Jycenth crooned a welcome to Riquarth and curled up placidly, half paying attention to the humans, and half dozing in the warm summer sunshine.

Despite having been over half a turn, M’dox still couldn’t believe that he and T’bia had become friends. Couldn’t believe in a good way, of course! T’bia was charming, and cheerful, and fun to be around and M’dox was baffled that he hadn’t managed to fuck their friendship up after this much time. The only other friend he’d had for this long without something going wrong was Riquarth, and the brown had made it very clear he was never leaving.

Even now, though with each passing month it seemed clearer that he wasn’t going to upset T’bia to the point of causing him to break off their friendship, M’dox still got nervous every time they met up, heart beating a little faster at the thought of seeing him again. Having T’bia as a friend was one of the best things in his life right now — Riquarth and his little firelizards being the other best things — and M’dox wanted to stay his friend as long as possible.

So, when T’bia had invited him for a picnic in a nice place he’d found near the Weyr, M’dox couldn’t even fathom saying anything but ‘yes!’

He’d fussed for a while over something to bring, as he’d always been taught that you brought a little something to a meal when you were invited to one. M’dox didn’t have any way to cook in his weyr, and he was too nervous to ask the kitchen workers if he could borrow some space to make something. Too many memories of his childhood and being kept from the kitchen after his father decided he wasn’t masculine enough and needed to be kept away from womanish things or he’d never get better. So, making something himself wasn’t an option, which meant he had to bring something he got. M’dox figured getting something from the kitchens didn’t make sense, as that was probably where T’bia would get food. So he had to find something else.

There wasn’t enough time to go get anything, so it had to be something M’dox already had lying around. He had his small stockpile of gifts for his family that he would give them whenever he got up the nerve to visit, including some non-perishable food items, but taking something from the collection, even if he had multiple gifts for every family member, felt weird. Everything else he got for himself was clothes, which probably wouldn’t fit T’bia anyway. Besides, M’dox didn’t want to give those away! The only other thing he had was two bottles of wine he had bought on his first solo trip to Telgar Hold. He’d gotten drawn into a conversation with a wine merchant with an outside stand and felt bad about leaving without buying anything. Stupid inability to say no because he was scared of upsetting someone. So now he had two bottles of fairly good quality wine that he felt would be too pathetic to drink on his own, so he’d stuck them in a cabinet and forgotten about them. Until now, that he was tearing through his room looking for a suitable thing to bring to a picnic. Wine seemed reasonable enough, you could drink wine at a picnic. Nodding at himself, M’dox grabbed one of the bottles at random and put it with his bag.

Are you ready to go now? Or do you need to change your outfit again? Riquarth asked, poking as much of his head as he could fit (which wasn’t much) through the doorway into the main room.

“No, I think I’m good.” M’dox said, glancing down at the shirt he had painstakingly picked out half an hour earlier. It was bright red and very soft, one of the softest he owned. It was also nice and airy, which was becoming more and more important as the weather got hotter.

Good. Riquarth said, retracting his nose, Because Jycenth just told me where to meet them. At his dragon’s words, M’dox let out a surprised squeak, grabbing his bag and the wine and dashing over to the ledge where Riquarth waited, mantling his wings in amusement. It wasn’t funny, he didn’t want to keep T’bia waiting, it was rude!

It didn’t take long to get there, Riquarth executing his usual precise jump between to bring them to the air above a copse of trees. He circled down lazily, not speeding up despite M’dox’s prompting, before landing and bending to let his rider down. M’dox rubbed Riquarth’s shoulder affectionately before heading over to T’bia, the usual heart racing picking up.

“Hey,” he said back, “It’s great. This place is beautiful.” M’dox said, glancing around trying to take it all in. It really was a nice little clearing, with the soft lighting and the tinkling music of the stream in the background. “I really like.” He added, turning to look at T’bia and smiling. “I, uh, brought this?” M’dox held the bottle of wine out, blushing a little. “I felt like I should bring something, and I had this lying around, it’s supposed to be good? We don’t have to drink it or anything, I just thought…” he said quickly, trailing off and glancing down at his feet. Was this a stupid idea to bring something? Maybe he made it weird? M’dox really hoped he hadn’t made it too weird.

Riquarth couldn’t help but sigh in amusement at his rider, watching him fondly for a moment before wandering over to Jycenth. He rumbled a hello back to the blue, joining Jycenth in sunning as he sprawled out on the grass nearby, partially unfurling his wings to create as much area for sunning as possible.

T’bia beamed in delight at the success of the location being approved by M’dox. He’d been sure his friend would like it, but not that sure that the approval didn’t make him glow with pleasure and he bounced slightly on the balls of his feet as M’dox looked around. T’bia had to resist the urge to dash forward and grab M’dox and drag him around so he got to see all the clearing, like the flowers that were off to the side, in a little patch of sunlight, or the rock that was shaped like a dragon egg that was sitting on the side of the stream, or the way two of the trees near by had gotten tangled up as they grew so they looked like one instead of two.

When the brownrider presented the bottle of wine, T’bia blinked and then grinned again. “Awesome!” He said, cheerful as he bounced towards M’dox and peered at it curiously, as if he actually knew anything about wine. “It’s not Katilan,” he said playfully, “So it can’t be too bad.” And he stuck his tongue out at his friend before grabbing his empty hand and pulling him towards the blanket T’bia had spread out on the ground earlier. “You can put it with the juice!” He chirped, indicating said juice with the hand not holding M’dox’s. He waited with a hint of patience for M’dox to put the wine down carefully before he gave in to the desire to show his friend around the clearing and dragged him towards the stream first.

“I found this place with R’nd a while ago,” he babbled, tugging at M’dox’s hand every time the brownrider slowed down too much. “And I’ve been down a few times but it’s no fun alone, but look!” he pointed at the egg-rock. “It looks like an egg!” He grinned, wriggling on the spot as he gave M’dox enough time to take in the sight of the egg before dragging him away from the stream and towards a little patch of flowering plants. The flowers were a soft lavender colour, but not a type that T’bia recognised (meaning they weren’t actually lavender, since that was the only flower he knew). He paused when they reached it, and after a careful examination, he picked one that was in full bloom and quite large. Smiling, he turned to M’dox and put it gently behind the brownrider’s ear.

T’bia tilted his head, taking in the picture of M’dox with the flower tucked neatly behind his ear, smiled brightly, and then set about dragging his friend towards the two trees. “These make me think of dragonriders!” He said, pausing before the two tangled trees, and lifting his eyebrows as he looked at M’dox seriously, eyes wide. “They started by themselves,” he said, pointing to each of the trunks, which were a good couple of feet apart, “but then they grew together! Like us with our dragons!” stepping forward, T’bia pressed his free hand against the trunk of the tree, and sighed softly, remembering his Impression to Jycenth.

M’dox breathed out a sigh of relief that T’bia seemed to like his offering to the picnic. He had been so worried! “It should be better than Katilan, yes, but that’s not hard.” Not that M’dox was an expert on Katilian wine either, but Riquarth had hatched there, he’d been a Candidate there, and he’d been invited to a couple gatherings that involved drinking that he was too scared to say no to, so he knew what it was like. Not pleasant, but it definitely got you drunk when you were an awkward, freshly Searched kid from a cothold who nervously drank whatever they gave you because you didn’t know what else to do. M’dox inwardly shuddered at those memories. He really didn’t miss his Candidacy, not at all.

“Okay, sure, I’ll just leave it—“ he started saying, agreeing to put the wine in the indicated place, when T’bia grabbed his hand. M’dox’s voice caught for a second, still unused to how contact friendly T’bia was even after this many months. Not that he didn’t like it! It was nice, having regular contact with another person. M’dox was just bad at anticipating it, and it sometimes took him by surprise. Smiling a little, he set the wine down and was immediately pulled by T’bia to go look at something.

He oohed at the egg shaped rock, gently resting a hand on it. It was cool, as the rock wasn’t in direct sunlight, and not egg textured at all, but if he wasn’t touching it the resemblance was uncanny. As soon as he removed his hand from the rock, T’bia was pulling him away to see something else.

The ‘something else’ turned out to be little purple flowers. M’dox recognized them as a type of wildflower, one that would crop up in the fields around the farms he grew up on. He honestly couldn’t remember if they had a name, it was just one of the various wildflowers that were little, pretty, and not bad for the animals to eat so they weren’t important enough to be taught about. Looking intently at the flowers trying to remember if he knew the name, M’dox missed T’bia picking one of the flowers from the little patch. His eyes widened a bit when T’bia reached over to him and tucked the bloom behind one of his ears. M’dox reached up shyly with the hand not held by T’bia, gently touching the flower in his hair and blushing. He’d forgotten how much he liked having flowers in his hair, it had been so long. “Thanks.” M’dox breathed, unable to keep from smiling widely. He dipped his head down to hide how much he was blushing, but of course, looking down meant he saw T’bia holding his hand and he only blushed harder.

Since he was looking down, M’dox almost tripped when T’bia started moving again, though he managed to keep his footing. He glanced at the trees then back at T’bia curiously. Upon hearing his explanation, M’dox let out a soft ‘oh,’ looking back at the trees. They were rather like them and their dragons. “I really like that.” he said, squeezing T’bia’s hand lightly as T’bia lay his other hand on the trunk.

Those trees are much too small for either to properly represent me. Riquarth said to both of them, looking at the tree through M’dox. Laughing at his dragon, M’dox looked at T’bia, grinning widely.

T’bia was pleased by M’dox’s reaction to the flower, and it made him feel warm and fuzzy with happiness. He had a habit of consciously forgetting things his friend told him but acting on them subconsciously. Like picking the flower; he did actually know M’dox loved flowers, but it hadn’t been a thought he’d focused on when he picked it. He’d picked it and put it behind his friend’s ear because it was pretty, and he thought it would look lovely against M’dox’s dark hair. And it did! T’bia didn’t get to be right very often, so he rather rejoiced in the moments he was!

The gentle squeeze of his hand had T’bia breaking free from his thoughts about when he’d Impressed Jycenth, and he turned emotional eyes on M’dox, rather wrapped up in the memories. He smiled softly at the compliment about his idea of how the trees were like a dragon-pair and nodded once, accepting it, before squeaking in surprise when Riquarth included him in his comment. He could hear Jycenth’s soft laugh of amusement at his surprise. It wasn’t the first time the brown had spoken to him, and would likely not be the last, but it was still so surprising! T’bia just wasn’t used to such masculine voices in his head! He was pretty sure even his mental voice was kind of feminine!

“They’re just baby trees,” T’bia replied cheerfully, stepping closer to M’dox so he could press their shoulders together as M’dox laughed at his dragon and grinned at him, smiling at the brownrider as he met his eyes for a moment; then T’bia flushed suddenly, and dropped his gaze, uncommonly aware of how close he had put them and how attractive M’dox’s lips were… A few breaths later, and T’bia was shaking off the emotions and throwing himself back into his usual exuberant persona. Beaming at his friend as he bounced back towards the rug and the food, T’bia tugged on M’dox’s hand to encourage him to follow. “C’mon!” he teased, cheerful and playful. “I got some of the best food!”

Leading M’dox back to the rug, T’bia dropped to sit on it, and tugged gently on his friend’s hand, encouraging him to sit down beside him before T’bia let go, somewhat reluctantly, so he could reach forward and drag the basket towards him. T’bia pulled out some glasses for the juice (and wine!) and smiled invitingly at M’dox as he handed them to him, encouraging him to pour them drinks before he dived back into the basket. T’bia pulled out some dark, heavy bread and some thick chunks of cheese, before pulling out a couple of carefully wrapped items. He placed one beside his knee furthest from M’dox, and then held the other one up teasingly.

“Guess!” he demanded playfully, holding the packet close enough for M’dox to smell what was inside. “If you get it wrong, I get to eat it,” he giggled, clearly not meaning a word of his threat.

It was instinct to lean in to where his shoulder pressed against T’bia’s, and M’dox didn’t even consciously register he was doing it. He smiled even wider when T’bia smiled back, glad he found Riquarth’s comment funny too. Though T’bia still startled a bit when the brown spoke to him, it decreased the number of misunderstandings about what — or who — M’dox would sometimes laugh at. M’dox really liked T’bia, and didn’t want to make him sad like he’d accidentally done their first meeting, and Riquarth seemed to think it was worth occasionally including the bluerider in on his commentary. Riquarth was all for avoiding unnecessary drama that might compromise all the progress M’dox had made, so he had no issue adding T’bia to the list of people he’d willingly speak directly to. After asking Jycenth the first time, of course.

M’dox didn’t notice how T’bia had blushed and looked away, too busy doing the same. T’bia was just so genuine, smiling with his entire face — his mouth, his eyes, his nose (it scrunched a little with the smile, M’dox had always found it cute) — and sometimes it was so much M’dox felt like he couldn’t breathe and needed to look away to keep from drowning in the smile. It was a bit of a relief when T’bia decided it was time for food and led him over to rug.

He sat down where T’bia indicated, accidentally bumping their knees together as M’dox settled on the blanket with his legs crossed. He fumbled with the glasses a moment, not sure what to put in them, before deciding to fill one with juice and the other with wine and let T’bia choose one. Satisfied that this plan would work, he poured for both glasses and set them in front of T’bia, where he could take whichever he wanted. He eyed the bread and cheese for a moment, thinking how good it looked when T’bia held up the wrapped food items. M’dox laughed at T’bia’s challenge, smiling at T’bia’s ‘threat’ and knowing he could answer. He, being a tad sentimental, had actually kept the wrapper from the bakery treats the first time they went to the Hold together. M’dox had dusted all the crumbs off before putting it in one of his bags where he had forgotten it for a while. When he found it a few weeks later, he was unable to throw it out and kept it on the small desk he had in his weyr. Because he still saw the wrapper fairly often, M’dox recognized the paper on the mystery items as the same type.

“It’s from the bakery we went to that first time.” M’dox said, with a soft smile at the memory, reaching up to pull it a little closer so he could smell it better, fingers brushing T’bia’s, “Something with powdered sugar, I think.”

T’bia felt his stomach tumble as M’dox leaned forward, bringing the package he was holding closer to his face, his fingers warm where they were brushing against T’bia’s own. Blushing hotly, T’bia did his best to ignore the butterflies dancing in his stomach – he wasn’t sure when M’dox had decided to set them loose there – and smiled slightly when his friend guessed. Blue eyes sparkled mischievously – M’dox wasn’t wrong, but he wasn’t exactly right. T’bia though, who never actually thought about what he was going to say until after it was free and embarrassing him, decided to let M’dox have the win. Mostly because he was absolutely terrified of what might come out of his mouth with the brownrider so damned close.

Shifting his grip slightly, T’bia presented the prize to M’dox on the palm of his hand, his smile widening cheerfully. “You remembered!” That was a big deal to T’bia, because he remembered their first outing so clearly and he would have been more than a little crushed if M’dox hadn’t of remembered, as if it wasn’t important or something, when to T’bia it was of the utmost importance. It was the first time he’d actually stepped forward and struck out on his own to make a friend and it hadn’t been a disaster and they’d had a lot of fun – especially T’bia! – and if M’dox hadn’t even remembered the pastry well, how sad would that have been? He would have looked so pathetic, remembering the day in such vivid detail!

Blushing as he watched M’dox take the sweet, T’bia dropped his gaze to the drinks that had been poured, pleased in a kind of roundabout way that M’dox wouldn’t notice all his blushing, because he’d always been blushing since their first encounter. Maybe M’dox would think it was weird that he hadn’t stopped though? They’d been spending time together for months and T’bia knew his blushing had only gotten worse, not better. Every time M’dox looked at him (and often when he wasn’t, because T’bia was looking at him) T’bia knew his face was lighting up. The butterflies in his stomach never seemed to rest and it was… well, T’bia didn’t know what it was. He brushed his hand over his stomach, trying to settle the activity there as he blinked at the two glasses.

T’bia wasn’t usually one for alcohol – it made his ‘say whatever came to his tongue’ thing even worse – but M’dox had kindly brought it and he’s poured a glass and T’bia felt it was only right that he should show his appreciation by taking the wine. At least he didn’t dislike the taste? Picking up the glass with wine, T’bia took a small sip and considered it. Definitely not Katilan, but he was no judge. It tasted good to him, and that was good enough! Smiling brightly, he flashed the cheerful expression at M’dox and took a larger mouthful, but not really a gulp. Putting the glass down, T’bia put some cheese on a piece of bread and took a bite even as he dug up his own bakery treat and unwrapped it. It was a new one, that he hadn’t tried yet (and he’d tried pretty much everything in that store at least once) and he glanced up at M’dox.

“Do you want to try a bite?” he asked, offering the treat to his friend.

“Of course I remember,” M’dox said earnestly, taking the wrapped whatever-it-was from T’bia’s hand, “It was my first time in a major Hold, and I had so much fun spending time with you.” He blushed and looked down, intently unwrapping the pastry to give himself something to do with his hands that wasn’t… he didn’t know, wasn’t something that was probably weird and would make T’bia uncomfortable. Their friendship was too important to M’dox for him to want to risk doing something too weird and make T’bia upset. After that trip T’bia was the person in the Weyr who knew the most about him, Riquarth excluded, and he’d still wanted to be friends. T’bia really was amazing. He’d seen how weird and awkward and shy M’dox was and still wanted to be friends, and M’dox could cry (and had before, though thankfully in the privacy of his own weyr) with how much it meant to him. “I’m really glad we became friends.” He said quietly, still looking down at the now unwrapped pastry (that really did look delicious).

He smiled in relief that T’bia seemed to enjoy the wine and that his contribution had been a good one. M’dox took the glass of juice and moved it a bit closer to himself, deciding he’d try the wine after he’d finished the already poured juice. He had bought it, after all, might as well get to have some of it. It probably wouldn’t taste too good mixed with the juice, so he really should finish that first.

T’bia asked if M’dox wanted to try the other pastry mid-sip of the juice. He immediately nodded, almost spilling all of the juice on himself in the process. “Yeah,” M’dox said, setting the glass down and wiping a few juice drops that had splashed onto his cheek of with his other hand, “I’ll try some. Thanks.” He reached out and carefully broke off a small piece, enough to get the taste of it but not deprive T’bia of the majority of his treat. It was very tasty M’dox decided after nibbling the corner of his small piece. Enough sugar, but not too much. And it was made with the fine flour the bakery seemed to use in all its pastries that still tasted decadent to M’dox after growing up on the coarser flour of a farm. “It’s really good!” He said, humming his approval and taking another bite.

“Here, you want some of mine?” M’dox asked, picking up his own pastry from where it nestled in the wrapper on his lap and holding it out to T’bia. The bluerider had bought the food after all, he should get to try it all if he wanted. And M’dox wanted to share! He liked giving T’bia things, and, unlike the wine, M’dox knew T’bia liked the pastry so he didn’t have the same worry about it being a bad gift.

T’bia positively glowed when M’dox said he’d had fun spending time with him in Telgar the first time. T’bia had hoped that the brownrider had had as much fund as he did, but to actually hear M’dox say as much was more than T’bia had anticipated and he squirmed happily as he watched his friend unwrap the pastry. At the quiet confession, T’bia blushed crimson with pleasure, and leaned forward, placing his hands gently on one of M’dox’s knees and staring intently at the brownrider. “Me too!” he whispered, wide eyed. He had a few friends, mostly created through his relationship with R’nd, but M’dox was special! T’bia had become his friend without help from an outside source (dragons excluded) and he was ridiculously proud of that. That was probably weird.

Sitting up straight again, and taking his hands back from his friend’s knee, T’bia picked up his treat (which he’d put down at some point?) and flashed a cheerful smile at the approval. “good!” he said, amused. He would have been pretty disappointed if he’d decided to try a new treat today and it was cruddy! When the offer came to try M’dox’s, T’bia blinked and tilted his head, not having expected the offer. Nodding once, T’bia felt his stomach twist anxiously as he put his own treat down once more, and leaned forward again, hands finding purchase lightly on M’dox’s knee. He boldly kept eye contact, though his face was absolutely crimson and so hot he was surprised M’dox couldn’t feel the heat.

When he was close enough, he took a small bite of the pastry, chewing his way through the absolute agony of his own mortification at what he was doing. He had no idea where the courage had come from, but it was fleeing fast. When he swallowed the mouthful, his throat was dry and it was a miracle he didn’t cough pastry crumbs all over his friend. Instead, his fingers squeezed slightly on M’dox’s knee to try and fight off the trembling in his hands and he licked his lips nervously. “It’s good,” he whispered, finally breaking eye contact and flushing even hotter – if that were possible – and slowly pulling away from M’dox.

When T’bia leaned forward to try the offered pastry, M’dox forgot how to breath. T’bia’s hands were warm against his knee, and M’dox was acutely aware of every point of contact. He could feel how the bluerider shifted his weight to reach the pastry, the pressure of his hands shifting minutely. It was with wide eyes that M’dox watched, trapped by T’bia’s gaze on him. completely unable to look away. Did he want to look away? M’dox wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter. He was fixed in place, watching T’bia take a bite from the pastry he held.

Even after T’bia pulled away, M’dox’s hand remained extended, holding out the pastry, still transfixed by T’bia’s eyes on him. He watched T’bia’s face as he chewed the dessert, and couldn’t help swallowing nervously when T’bia did. His breath caught again when T’bia squeezed his knee, surprised he had started breathing again at some point in the past… like five seconds? It felt like so much longer. M’dox couldn’t help glancing down when T’bia licked his lips, glancing quickly back up just in time to see T’bia looking away. T’bia’s hands left his leg, and the sudden lack of warmth on his knee made M’dox shiver. He noticed that, despite licking them, there was still a bit of powdered sugar from the pastry on T’bia’s upper lip. M’dox bit his own lip as a quiet, internal war raged about what to say to T’bia about it.

“You have, uhm…” he started, finally dropping the arm holding the pastry just in time for his other arm to reach up, towards T’bia’s face. “Here.” M’dox gently rested his right hand against T’bia’s face, fingers just barely brushing his friend’s jawline. With his thumb M’dox carefully brushed against T’bia’s lip where the powdered sugar was, wiping it off. Instinctively M’dox pulled his hand back and licked the powdered sugar residue off his thumb, not thinking about the action beyond the intent to clean his hand. Realizing what he did, M’dox blushed furiously, looking down as he felt his face warm up even more. “Uh, powdered sugar.” He finished lamely.

As mortified as T’bia was at his own daring, he had enough room for emotion to be pleased that M’dox didn’t shove him away or react badly. That was good, right? He thought it was, but maybe he’d seek out R’nd later that evening and make sure. He didn’t want to be reading things wrong and make M’dox avoid him! That would be bad! His thoughts were interrupted by M’dox’s broken sentence, and T’bia turned to look at him, his eyebrows lifting slightly in curiosity and an unspoken question. Having M’dox reach out and cup his face with a featherlight touch took T’bia by surprise, and his lips twitched slightly, unsure if they wanted to form an expression of surprise, or a smile.

T’bia’s blue eyes widened when M’dox brushed his thumb against his lip, and T’bia’s whole body flared up with heat and he leaned into M’dox’s touch. When M’dox licked his thumb, T’bia’s lips parted in a soft sigh, staring avidly, his face heating up; he could feel his heart pounding against his chest so hard he was shocked M’dox couldn’t hear it, and his blood was running hot and cold. The explanation was met with another soft sigh, and T’bia put down the treat he’d picked up at some point, and scooted closer to M’dox, just a little, his hand finding the brownrider’s knee again. His stomach was alive with fluttering butterflies!

“M’dox?” T’bia felt his voice tremble at the whisper of his friend’s name, waiting until the brownrider looked up to meet his gaze. He paused, caught up in his friend’s eyes, before shifting minutely closer, his eyes huge in his own face as he finally gushed the rest of his question, face crimson but expression earnest. “Can I kiss you?” He had no idea how his friend would react, and he himself was trembling, but he was feeling reckless and bold and was grasping at those emotions with both hands while they were still present. He’d never kissed anyone before; he hoped he wasn’t really bad at it!

M’dox practically jumped out of his skin when T’bia put a hand on his knee again. He couldn’t tell if he was frozen in place or ready to move at any second, whole body tense in anticipation of… of something.

It didn’t take long to find out what that something was. Can I kiss you? M’dox could feel his stomach jumping and his heart beating faster, and he was so glad he wasn’t holding anything anymore because he would have dropped it and T’bia would have been able to see his hands trembling. He swallowed, knowing he had to answer and knowing what the answer was. Yes. Yes yes yes yes. But saying it was harder than thinking it and it took M’dox a few moments before words would come out, and even then it wasn’t many.

“Yeah,” He breathed, eyes locked with T’bia’s, watching him with apprehension, to see what he did, to judge his reaction. “Yeah. Please.” M’dox added, excitement and uncertainty rushing through him, before he forgot how to breath again and could only wait.

T’bia was ridiculously focused on M’dox’s face; he didn’t even notice the way M’dox jumped when he put his hands on his knee. What he did notice was the way his friend’s eyes widened and he swallowed. T’bia bit his bottom lip, anxious and anticipating the response. He didn’t know what it would be, but he knew what he hoped it would be.

The soft breath of acceptance had T’bia’s heart soaring, and he beamed, face lighting up and blue eyes sparkling. He’d never been wanted before, not before Jycenth anyway – well, not really. His father was good and his siblings adored him, but he’d never been wanted, like the way M’dox’s eyes seemed to brighten and it made him feel warm and special.

Shifting his weight onto his knees, T’bia leaned forward, pressing each hand onto each of M’dox’s knees to balance his weight, and brought his face close. He paused, just a breath away from the brownrider’s lips and waited, watching his face to be sure M’dox was sure, and then closed the distance to press his lips to M’dox’s in a shy and timid kiss. It wasn’t even a split second before he was mentally flailing; he didn’t know what to do! Was this it? Was this all people did when they kissed? He didn’t know!

Feeling Jycenth reach out gently to M’dox was a gift; He’s never kissed anyone before, the petite blue whispered against M’dox’s mind, neither he nor T’bia knowing if M’dox had any ideas, either, but T’bia seemed pretty confident that M’dox was a lot smarter than he was and a lot more knowledgeable and while Jycenth didn’t agree – mostly because T’bia was implying his own stupidity – Jycenth was willing to let his young rider be – for now.

The shine in T’bia’s eyes was nearly too much for M’dox; his friend looked so happy because of him, and M’dox couldn’t help but be emotional about it. No one had ever looked at him like T’bia was looking at him before. Like he had just given them something special. He liked it, the warmth in his chest at T’bia’s smile, the way his heart swooped as if he’d just ridden a dragon through a dive from high up when T’bia leaned in, the soft air on his face from where he could feel T’bia’s breaths when he paused barely any distance at all between them. M’dox could feel his heart pounding in his throat, his ears, as he waited for T’bia.

And then T’bia was kissing him and all coherent thought left M’dox, just letting himself be drawn into the kiss, letting himself experience it without thoughts crowding it out and getting in the way.

Jycenth’s voice didn’t surprise M’dox as much as it usually did when the blue spoke to him. In some ways it felt like part of the experience of the kiss, of getting closer to T’bia; of course his friend’s dragon would be there! Jycenth’s message did explain why the kiss seemed to have stalled; M’dox had been content to let T’bia take the lead, but if T’bia had never kissed anyone before that plan might not work as well. He flushed at the idea that T’bia had chosen him to have his first kiss with, and found he was giddily happy about it. That meant T’bia had to like him a lot, didn’t it?

M’dox reached forward, placing one hand at the back of T’bia’s head, pulling him closer, and the other right under T’bia’s shoulder where he could help T’bia balance if he started toppling forward. He put a little more pressure into kissing back, curling his fingers in T’bia’s shirt and breathing him in. They stayed like that a few moments, before M’dox gently broke the kiss, moving his mouth back barely a fraction of an inch. He didn’t want T’bia’s first kiss to be too overwhelming; his own first kiss, the girl had started with too much tongue, too enthusiastically, and a bit too fast and M’dox had gotten overwhelmed. He didn’t want to do that to T’bia. M’dox gently bumped their noses together and smiled, reassuring T’bia he wasn’t going anywhere, before leaning back in and softly pressing their lips together again, parting his lips just a little and moving against T’bia’s mouth a little more than the simple press of before, though still gentle. M’dox paid close attention to T’bia’s reactions, adjusting the kiss to allow him as much control as he wanted to take.

The mental flailing, and the growing panic attack faded like a cloud dispersed before a breeze when M’dox reached and pulled him closer, T’bia’s body relaxing by multitudes. M’dox knew what to do! He knew he would! The young bluerider’s heart soared and he couldn’t contain the smile that bent his lips, feeling M’dox’s against his was both so natural and so good and his friend had said yes and he was kissing him!

T’bia’s mental squealing was interrupted when M’dox drew back slightly, the bright blue eyes fluttered open to peer at the brownrider, his eyebrows twitching just slightly in concern. But still, M’dox didn’t run away from him and he relaxed again, his smile blooming across his whole face as his friend bumped their noses together gently, and he gave a breathy giggle, overwhelmed by all the good he was feeling. Jycenth’s satisfied approval, his own ecstatic delight. He couldn’t believe M’dox had said yes!

The gentle press of lips against his once more had T’bia shifting his weight, altering himself so he was closer to M’dox – just barely not in his lap, really – and his hands were freed from steadying his weight. The splayed fingers of his right hand pressed against M’dox’s chest, just over his heart, feeling the way it seemed to dance rapidly, much like T’bia could feel his own; it made him feel more comfortable in his own reactions – that M’dox’s heart was pounding so it was okay that his was, too.

T’bia’s left hand lifted to cup against the side of M’dox’s face, his thumb stroking gently as he followed his friend’s lead by parting his lips slightly, but he was too shy and unsure about what to do next to risk taking the lead. Besides, T’bia was a follower, not a leader, and he was more than happy to let M’dox dictate where their kiss went or how it developed or… whatever it was that kisses did when they went wherever they went! That said, T’bia silently considered every new element M’dox added, and then timidly echoed it back.

While this wasn’t M’dox’s first kiss he decided almost immediately that it was his favorite. For one, of all the people he’d kissed (which sounded like he’d kissed way more people than he had), he liked T’bia the most. The others he barely knew, let alone liked; his first kiss, the girl at the Candidate party-thing who’d propositioned him while he was drunk (he’d panicked and said yes), pretty much the same situation at different event with a weyrbrat guy (he’d panicked and said yes then too), and then the Searched Candidate who’d approached him after the memorably awkward ‘here’s how Flights work’ class (predictably, he’d panicked and said yes). It wasn’t like that with T’bia; he hadn’t panicked and said yes, he had just said yes. Sure, he was nervous, but he wasn’t afraid, and the difference was important. M’dox wanted this, in a way he hadn’t wanted any of his previous kisses.

He leaned into T’bia’s hands, shifting his hand on T’bia's shoulder, intending to pull him closer, before M’dox realized that might not work as well as he was hoping. If T’bia moved any closer, he’d be in M’dox’s lap; which he didn’t have a problem with at all, it’s just that it would put T’bia’s mouth a few inches higher. Considering the several inches between them in height already, M’dox figured the extra distance would only lead to one or both of them straining their necks, which was not at all what they wanted to do. If T’bia found it uncomfortable he might not want to kiss M’dox again later! No, they’d have to do something else.

“Here,” M’dox breathed, moving his hands to T’bia’s shoulders and pressing them a little, “Sit back a bit.” He gently guided T’bia to a different position, moving the bluerider until he was sitting vaguely crosslegged. “If you’re ever uncomfortable let me know and we can do something else, okay?” M’dox said, punctuating the statement with a quick kiss before sitting back and waiting for confirmation from T’bia before doing anything else. Once T’bia had responded in the positive, M’dox shuffled forward until he was sitting in T’bia’s lap — T’bia may be too tall to sit in his lap, but he wasn’t too tall to sit in T’bia’s. It was actually easier for him to kiss T’bia sitting this way than it had been before moving, which was ideal.

“Is this okay?” M’dox asked, again wanting confirmation before continuing, as he gently wrapped his arms around T’bia’s shoulders and pressed their foreheads together.

When M’dox broke the kiss and gently pressed him back, T’bia panicked visibly, blue eyes widening in terror and an obvious fear that he’d done something wrong, that M’dox was done and didn’t want him in his space any more. How had he ruined it already? He’d been enjoying kissing and he’d really hoped that M’dox was enjoying it too but… Easy, love, the dragon reassured, helping T’bia relax as M’dox gently set T’bia in a new position. T’bia tilted his head, blinking, at M’dox’s words.

T’bia lifted his hand, brushing it gently against the side of M’dox’s face, marvelling at the combination of smooth skin; he’d guess M’dox had shaved that morning. He’d been lazy himself, and hadn’t since the previous morning. He wondered idly if the shadow of stubble on his jaw would bother the other rider. Normally he was so good about shaving regularly! He’d been in a rush that morning, though, trying to get everything done and ready for the picnic, he’d forgotten! “Okay,” he said softly, offering a small but sincere smile after the fleeting kiss. “You too.” He added, not sure what he could do that would make M’dox uncomfortable, but sure that it would be possible.

“Yeah,” he breathed back, wrapping his arms gently around M’dox, fingers splayed so he could (quite innocently) feel as much of his friend’s body through his shirt as possible. He was so warm and solid that T’bia just knew it wasn’t a dream, and he was so beautiful to touch! T’bia’s fingers trailed gently down M’dox’s back, and back up again, pressing his lips lightly against the brownrider’s, smile tilting the corners of his lips upwards. He found M’dox’s weight in his lap to be quite comfortable, his friend not heavy enough to be uncomfortable and his long limbs seemingly at home wrapped around him.

Feeling daring and affectionate, T’bia nudged M’dox’s jaw lightly with his nose, inviting him to tip his head back a little, and T’bia kissed him on the side of his jaw, then down the side of his neck, breathing in the warm scent of M’dox’s skin. When he reached his collar, T’bia nuzzled the crook of M’dox’s neck softly, feeling somewhat embarrassed and silly, as if he’d done something strange (he wasn’t entirely sure he hadn’t) and he tilted his head up slowly, face tinged dark red once more, and kissed M’dox on the side of his mouth timidly.

M’dox watched T’bia closely, wanting to be sure that when T’bia said he was okay he actually meant it and wasn’t just saying he was because… well, because he panicked or didn’t know what else to say. Like M’dox usually did. After a moment of consideration M’dox was convinced T’bia meant it when he confirmed he was fine with M’dox sitting on his lap.

“Great.” He smiled, sliding one arm down to around T’bia’s waist so he could pull his friend as close to him as possible, other arm still around T’bia’s shoulders. This was not how M’dox had envisioned their picnic going, but he had less then zero complaints about it. Between the euphoria he felt kissing T’bia and the pride he felt from Riquarth humming through their bond — for being brave enough to say ‘yes,’ for saying yes because he wanted to not because he was afraid of saying no, for being able to lead when T’bia didn’t know how — M’dox’s heart was singing and he couldn’t stop smiling.

He liked this so much. He liked the way T’bia held him, how he pulled him close, the soft kisses. Everything was so nice. The nudge to his jaw had M’dox tilting his head back, giving T’bia the access he wanted, curious and pleased about T’bia’s growing confidence with kissing. M’dox didn’t mind leading, but he didn’t just want them to do whatever he thought of, he wanted T’bia to try things out too. And this particular idea of his was great. M’dox couldn’t help the gasp he let out, enjoying the feel of T’bia’s lips on his neck. He hummed at the way T’bia nuzzled against him, and when T’bia leaned back up to give him a shy kiss, looking a bit embarrassed, M’dox quickly deepened it, wanting to show T’bia how very much he had liked it, the hand on T’bia’s shoulder moving to the back of his head, pulling him closer.

T’bia was glad of M’dox’s weight on his lap; he was pretty sure that if his friend wasn’t sitting there, he would have floated away with how light and airy and joyful he was feeling! He’d never felt so wonderful (obviously Impressing Jycenth was a non-contender) and he was having trouble making his brain work beyond squealing internally about how happy he was. Did he need to actually function, though? T’bia wasn’t sure.

The current events were certainly not how T’bia had planned the picnic to go; indeed, he wasn’t sure he’d ever thought anything could end up with the way he was currently, arms wrapped joyfully around M’dox, the brownrider sprawled on his lap, M’dox pressing his lips to T’bia’s after the bluerider had left a timid kiss on his friend. T’bia couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect picnic turnout, though, and he was subconsciously pleased none of their food had demands on heat or being eaten sooner rather than later!

Breaking the kiss with slow reluctance, T’bia stared at M’dox with wonder, blue eyes bright and affectionate as he breathed in soft little puffs. T’bia had never really thought about kissing someone, before M’dox. Well, he’d had a crush on R’nd (but didn’t everyone?) but M’dox was the first person he’d really wanted to kiss and T’bia found he wasn’t at all disappointed with the experience. He smiled shyly; “I like kissing you,” he said breathily, his arms squeezing M’dox tighter for a moment before relaxing to hold him loosely.

T’bia liked kissing him. M’dox couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his face even if he wanted to. T’bia liked kissing him. He could hardly believe it, and M’dox was sure he’d overthink it later, probably that night when he was trying to sleep, but for now, he was just going to go along with it. T’bia wasn’t the sort to lie about this, M’dox knew his friend well enough to be sure of that.

T’bia liked kissing him.

“I like kissing you too,” M’dox said, wondering if it were medically possible to explode from happiness because he was starting to feel like he would. He leaned forward, resting his forehead on T’bia’s and softly brushed their noses together, nuzzling into him. “We should do it more often.” Maybe not ‘every second of every day,’ as nice as that would be, because M’dox knew that he would definitely pass out from being too happy then, but ‘a lot’ would work too.

“We, ah, should probably eat some more of that food shouldn’t we?” M’dox asked, realizing that they still had lots of food T’bia had brought, and he wanted T’bia to know how much being invited on the picnic meant to him. The kissing was a good start, probably, but enjoying all the food and drink to the fullest extent would also help him show how much he enjoyed the morning with T’bia. But going back to eating meant he would have to stop being in such close contact with T’bia, and M’dox didn’t want to let go yet. “I’m not sure I want to move though,” He said with a laugh, bringing both arms to loop around T’bia’s shoulders.

T’bia’s whole expression bloomed into delighted happiness when M’dox said he liked kissing him, too, and he pressed his nose softly against M’dox’s when the brownrider tipped their foreheads together, giggling when he was nuzzled at. “Yes,” he whispered on a soft breath, eyes wide and bright with hopeful anticipation of getting to kiss M’dox again, even though he’d barely stopped kissing him in the current moment. The idea of being allowed to kiss M’dox was absolutely soul enchanting, and T’bia squeezed his arms tight around M’dox again for a moment, not sure how else to express his delight.

A slow blinked, and T’bia pouted playfully. “Probably,” he agreed, glancing towards the food. It wasn’t too far away, and when M’dox said he didn’t want to move, T’bia spluttered out a laugh, glancing with a combination of shy and sly at the brownrider from under his lashes. “Me either.” He just knew his lap would feel so cold and empty without M’dox sitting on it! Wrapping one arm tightly around the brownrider, T’bia leaned sideways, and dragged the picnic basket closer. Some of the food was still where he’d put it, and the drinks hadn’t budged, but most of the food was now by the cross-section of their legs.

“There!” He said playfully, blushing at his forwardness and attempt to prevent M’dox from needing to move. So long as his friend didn’t want his pastry any time soon (T’bia couldn’t see it, so it was probably behind M’dox, but was it in reach?) then they wouldn’t have to reclaim their own personal spaces any time soon! He was so pleased with himself!

There were so many things M’dox wanted to do right then, when T’bia agreed that they should kiss more often. Cry, shout, spin around until he got dizzy, kiss T’bia until they both got dizzy. Instead, though, M’dox simply beamed at his friend, trying to express all of the above in the one expression and the way he squeezed T’bia back.

The sudden move to grab the basket had M’dox letting out a somewhat undignified squeak, though he was almost immediately laughing as he realized what T’bia was doing.

“Clever,” he teased, giving T’bia a tiny kiss on the nose. T’bia had a cute nose. Did he know he had a cute nose? M’dox would have to tell him, or better yet show him with more kisses. There was time for that later, though; M'dox had still eaten practically nothing that day, other than about two bites of pastry. Not having to move away from T’bia was nice, but he really should eat. The now within reach picnic basket had some fruit in it, red berries that M’dox leaned over to grab a handful of and started munching on them, smiling at T’bia as he put the fruit in his mouth.
