Madiquel had been dropped off by R’nya well into the afternoon. She was really appreciative of the fact that the Weyrleader hadn’t rushed her time with Ayontay after his Impression, and the way her best friend let her help tend to the precious bronze. Madiquel was still having trouble wrapping her mind around it all when they left Ista, and the cold of between hadn’t helped much. Honestly, it had mostly just reminded her of the tragedy that had also happened at the Hatching. Unfortunately, R’nya intimidated Madiquel and she didn’t have the courage to ask him any of the questions that were burning her up by the time he landed near her and her Papa’s weyr.

After thanking R’nya politely, Madiquel dashed inside the weyr, leaving the Weyrleader to watch her in a bemused fashion before making his own way home. Getting inside, Madiquel tossed her bag into her bedroom, and then ran back out, looking around for her Papa. It didn’t take long to find the man, though he looked slightly harried. Had she woken him up? “Papa!” Madiquel exclaimed, throwing herself at the man and hugging him tightly around the neck. She’d clung to him for several minutes before he’d asked how her trip had been. Madiquel extracted herself and shook her head gently, begging for a bath and a night in her own bed before she delved back into that. She didn’t even tell him Ayontay had Impressed.

After bathing, and picking at a bit of fruit for dinner, Madiquel had collapsed into her cold but welcoming bed and easily fallen asleep. Unfortunately, her dreams were erratic and tormented; she woke up screaming, just two or three hours after she’d gone to bed. “Papa!” she shrieked, sitting upright in bed, hair tousled from her restless sleep, bursting into tears as her beloved father came into the room.

Jajojin burst into Madiquel’s room not long after she screamed for him, a glow stone in hand to light his way. He had just crawled into bed himself, having always been one to prefer to rise and sleep when the sun did, and thankfully for his daughter, he hadn’t taken any fellis that night either. While she had been away at Ista Weyr, Jajojin found himself having more bad nights than good and self-medicated with the liquid that ensured he’d sleep deep and without dreams. It had been a rough time without the bubbly girl there to talk with him in the evenings and eat breakfast with in the morning but he had made it through mostly intact and had cleaned up the mess caused by those bad moments, hoping his daughter never found out about them.

“Madiquel? What is it?” He asked softly when she burst into tears. He made it quickly to her bed and sat on the edge, setting the stone on her little table. Even in the low light he could see her distress and pulled her in for a hug, keeping her close as he rubbed a hand in soft circles along her back. He knew something weighed heavy on her mind when she returned, hugging him for a while but not wanting to talk about anything that had happened on her trip. Somehow he managed not to ask R’nya what it was Madiquel was likely keeping from him, preferring to trust his baby girl to talk to him when she was ready. They didn’t have the smoothest relationship when her mother was alive but they both needed each other after the landslide and a solid bond had formed.

“A nightmare?” He knew all about those. Some days felt like he was in a living nightmare when he thought too much on how he still lived when Denath didn’t. That night would haunt him forever and years later it was still hard to find a moment’s peace without something reminding him of the loss he felt.

When Jajojin wrapped her up in a hug, Madiquel shifted, settling herself across his lap and wrapping her arms around him so she could sob into his chest brokenly. Considering the day she’d lived through, she wasn’t surprised she’d had nightmares before she’d even really fallen asleep. What she was surprised by – and absolutely heartbroken about – was the theme her nightmare had taken. It took her a long while of being held by her Papa before Madiquel was able to quieten her distraught sobbing enough to stop, absolutely exhausted. She snuggled closer to Jajojin, yawning tiredly, her eyes half closed… until the image came back, and she jerked up, almost hitting her head against her Papa’s chin.

“Yes,” she said softly in answer to his question. She shuddered, trembling as the images of her subconscious came flooding back to her. “Ayontay Impressed,” she whispered, “and I dreamed… I dreamed…” She bit back a dry sob, looking up at her father with a soul crushing expression of heartbreak. She couldn’t form the words; not when her father had lived through that nightmare, and she was so afraid that if she actually said it, something might actually happen to Ayontay and Xyxyth and she couldn’t live with herself if that came about!

“Xyxyth is b-bronze,” she added, choking on the word as she buried her face back against her father, clinging to him desperately. If the Hatching hadn’t been such a disaster, maybe she would never have associated Ayontay’s Impression to bronze with her father’s loss of his beautiful Denath, but considering all the bloodshed and death and mayhem and the overall awfulness of the Hatching… well, it was probably normal to be flooded by such horrible thoughts. Right? There wasn’t something wrong with her, was there?

“I should b-be h-happy,” she cried, peering up at Jajojin brokenly. “B-but I’m n-not! I’m a h-h-horrible friend!” Sobbing again, she didn’t notice the way a subdued Clover crawled into her lap, making quite the little pile of them, and curled up reassuringly.

Jajojin cradled her close, recalling many nights they had sat like this after the landslide. He had been in rough shape and the poor child had been made to care for him, making sure he ate and stayed hydrated all while she dealt with the loss of her mother and who knew how many friends. Until one night of clarity changed it all and he looked after her, reassuring her, holding her. His daughter meant everything to him now and he hated that she was so upset.

It took a while to sort out what she was talking about, at first assuming Ayontay’s Impression was part of her dream but then he caught on. So the boy had found his lifemate earlier that day at the Hatching. Jajojin was happy, even proud for him but knowing the loss of a dragon as well as he did, he also worried for the boy and hoped they lived a safe and long life together. He ran his hand down her head and back, smoothing the mess of hair as he went, trying his best to reassure her that everything was fine.

Then she named the dragon and his colour. His hand froze as he suddenly knew what was bothering her so much and why there was such heartache in her eyes. “Oh, child,” he whispered and looked away to stare at the little glow stone. He had just been wishing Ayontay the best and didn’t even consider his daughter would merge his life’s events with her friend’s. He didn’t want to have this talk and had been able to avoid it for years but Madiquel needed to hear it, to know the difference. He thought about that night every day and even he didn’t know where it would push his sanity levels but Jajojin had to tell it and had to stay in the present for her.

“You’re not a horrible friend, you’re a concerned friend but you can still be happy for him. Ayontay is a good kid without a trace of arrogance.” Unlike himself and Denath. They were cocky and believed they could do anything and help anyone despite the danger. “Den… Denath died saving Weyrlings. It was brave but… stupid. It wasn’t stable but we both believed it could be done. Denath managed to dig out a wide enough opening to get the young ones trapped inside free but another wave of mud caught him and a building… it pinned him down… crushing…”

Jajojin could feel the silent tears sliding down his cheeks but didn’t move to wipe them away, his arms were both wrapped securely around Madiquel and he didn’t want to let go. He needed the hug as much as she did right then. “He told me… he told me to continue living for us both but it’s so hard sometimes.” His voice dropped to a whisper as he recalled Denath’s final words filled with love and conviction. He had betrayed his dragon multiple times in those early months following his death and he would forever wear the scars of that shame but he still lived.

“The North,” Jajojin continued once he found his voice again, “is a lot safer than anywhere the South provided. Ayontay and… Xyxyth, was it? Won’t have the same trials and a good kid like that boy will have a good dragon. They won’t do anything stupid or to worry you.” It had been years since he had any interest in a relationship but if he read Ayontay right, the kid had it bad for his little girl but even if nothing came of that, they had a solid friendship that would sway Ayontay to do the right thing and be cautious.

Madiquel lifted her sad face to peer up at her Papa as he spoke softly, her eyebrows drawing together as he spoke his dragon’s name. Her concern immediately shifted from her own nightmare and her own heartbreak, to the fear that her Papa would fall over the edge of sanity and she’d have to help him find his way back. Usually when he spoke his dragon’s name, it was in the desperate and lost way that terrified her.

“Papa?” She asked softly, afraid of interrupting him, but afraid not to. She reached up, touching gently his cheek where tears were trailing. She wriggled, sitting up straighter and wrapped her arms around Jajojin’s neck, hugging him tightly and kissing her Papa on the cheek. She couldn’t understand the pain he went through, losing his dragon, since she’d never had one nor lost it – but she could see how much it hurt him, and she appreciated so much that he’d stayed with her. Madiquel didn’t know what she’d do, or where she’d go, if her Papa left her.

Leaving her arms looped around her Papa’s neck, Madiquel leaned back and frowned at him seriously. “Do you really think so?” She asked. She wanted to believe him, but she was still worried, her nightmare nipping at her heels despite her falling into caretaker-mode.

Jajojin nodded as he clung to Madiquel, his anchor to reality. He hated revisiting that night but it had to be done to help her understand that Denath's death didn't set the precedent for all other bronze dragons, especially those closely linked to her. Ayontay was a lot more grounded and cautious than he had ever been and Jajojin believed the kid would be just fine. The only thing that worried him, as it did with every group of weyrlings, was learning to between. While it wasn't every class, it did reach a point where it felt like they lost at least one pair to the cold depths whether due to cockiness or a lack of concentration and confidence. Ayontay did struggle with holding his head up but Jajojin felt a bronze dragon would help make the kid more confident and believe in himself enough to overcome such obstacles.

"I really think so," he said softly and even managed a small smile that almost touched his eyes as well. "But, if anything should happen, and I stand by the belief it would be minor in comparison to the South, there are far more capable Healers here and more than a handful like we had in Katila." He didn't want to add to her fears but Madiquel was old enough to handle the fact that some accidents did happen no matter how careful someone was but there were people trained to handle such things and being so close to the Healer Hall was an added bonus. He'd have to speak with R'nya about recruiting Ayontay to Fort after the boy graduated so he could be close to Madiquel and the Healers to further assure his daughter everything would be fine.

"Maybe one day we'll even have Healers trained properly for dragons again," Jajojin's voice was wistful from memory. They were a sight to behold with the way they knew their way around a dragon and how delicate their touch seemed to be. He once saw one help splinter a wing that was damaged in a particularly brutal Flight and the dragon seemed so at ease with her. He had even been sweet on one of the Healers in his youth but she had politely turned him down, stating she wanted to continue learning all she could about helping the dragons and didn't want to be distracted by a handsome face. Those were good days.

When her Papa mentioned the healers, Madiquel sat up slightly in his lap, her eyes widening as her decision earlier that day came back to her. She’d put it to the wayside, so upset with the whole event and then leaving Ayontay when she came home with R’nya, but when her father mentioned how they had more Healers now than Katila ever did, Madiquel peered up at him. He was lost in thought, but she could tell by the relaxed expression on his face that they were good ones.

“Papa?” She asked gently, rousing him from wherever he’d wandered off to in his mind. “I don’t want to be a dragonrider,” she said firmly, her expression serious. “I never did.” She added, wanting to make sure he didn’t think it was her nightmare or Denath that were the cause of her saying such a thing. Madiquel had never come right out and said how she didn’t’ want to be a dragonrider; she’d avoided answering her friend’s prompting and she had never joined a Candidate class, but that wasn’t really a definitive ‘no’. Speaking the words out loud, now, though took a weight off her shoulders and Madiquel smiled slightly.

Her serious expression took over her face once more a moment later. “But I don’t want to be useless,” she said, her eyebrows drawn together. She didn’t want to be just another Weyrfolk-er. She didn’t want to be stuck in the kitchens making dinner or warming some nameless dragonrider’s bed! Madiquel wanted to be useful and she wanted to do something good for the Weyr, not just… well, feeding the Weyr was good, but it wasn’t the type of goal she had her gaze set on since Ayontay’s Impression.

“Papa?” She asked again, peering up at him intently. “Can girls be Healers?” She was fourteen, and if the Healer Hall was like the Weyr, then twelve would be the entrance age, right? But she was a girl and Madiquel hadn’t seen a single female Healer! She countered that it could be like female dragonriders: just really rare! But she didn’t know anything about the Halls and Northern Pern to really be sure. Papa would know, though!

“I know,” Jajojin had figured out a while ago that his daughter didn’t want to be a dragonrider. Once, back in a happier time, that would have upset and confused him. Why wouldn’t someone want to bond with the beautiful creatures and why wouldn’t the daughter of a bronzerider not want to be a goldrider? A lot had happened since that time where such thoughts would have happened. Now, he was thankful he didn’t have to argue daily with her to keep her from Standing. He didn’t want her to risk losing the joy and love a dragon brought and couldn’t stand the idea of her losing her mind or life if she lost her dragon. Despite a vast majority of her friends having Impressed in recent years, Madiquel still didn’t seem to have an interest in one of her own, though she was always thrilled for her friends and loved their dragons. Jajojin was glad that she didn’t fear or hate the dragons like he himself sometimes felt he did but was relieved she didn’t want one herself.

He was further relieved when he talked himself out of the belief that it had been his fault. That Denath’s death and his craziness had scared her away from Impressing. But he had spent far too much time, months in fact, in dwelling on that when he started to notice her lack of interest in taking classes and Standing. The girl simply didn’t see herself as a dragonrider. Perhaps he should have brought her to a Hold upon the return North and given her a life away the creatures that would give her a chance to see more of the world and settle down. Not that he really saw that future for her either. She was sweet and loving but a domestic life of a wife wouldn’t do for her either. The simple fact that she didn’t want to be useless in the Weyr told him that.

His brows furrowed and a frown tugged at his mouth when she asked her question. Can girls be Healers? He had known some in the past and assumed they were still allowed into the Hall but Jajojin found himself struggling to answer. Why did Madiquel want to know? Had he planted the idea of her becoming one just now? What if she did get into the Hall and left him? He barely survived two weeks without her, how could he go years with her away to learn how to wrap a bandage on an arm?

It was part of a struggle he had been having with himself for quite a while now. He wanted Madiquel to blossom and find her own path in life, to be happy. But he needed her with him to keep him calm and find his way back from the bad days. He couldn’t ask her to stay with him forever, though. It wasn’t fair to her. She needed to find what she was interested in, find love, find… everything she wanted. She couldn’t do that cooped up with him in their tiny weyr where most of her friends were afraid to even visit her.

Of course he may have been overreacting to her question and she only wondered if women were Healers, not that she wanted to be one. But what if she did? Would it be so bad? She loved to help people and cared so deeply about everyone she met. Healer Hall was also in Fort so she would be close by. He could walk down for a visit when it was needed.

Jajojin pulled himself out of his thoughts, focusing his vision once more on his daughter and not the dark corner of her room that the glow didn’t reach. “Yes, girls can be Healers. It’s harder on them, though, from what I remember of stories in the past. Is there a reason for your wonderings?”

Madiquel was comfortably and patiently quiet as she watched her Papa fall down the rabbit-hole of thoughts, unconcerned as he didn’t seem to be falling into the black pit of despair and she really wanted him to give her a good answer to her question. With his mention of healers, her own desire had been re-sparked. She couldn’t think of any bad reasons for being a Healer – well, besides leaving her Papa to attend the Hall – but that was a given. Madiquel didn’t ever want to leave him, although she knew that wasn’t really realistic.

Madiquel frowned slightly when her Papa finally spoke, and her pursed her lips in thought. Well, she was stronger than she looked – she knew that! Especially after her two weeks in Ista! – and she was sure she could do it. Madiquel thought she was smart enough, right? She could certainly read and write and had paid attention (unlike some of her fellow Weyrbrats) during their required Harper lessons growing up in Katila. Maybe Papa would help her brush up on her skills? She’d hate to be an embarrassment to him and the Weyr! She blinked again, and realised her thoughts were getting away from her.

Collecting herself, Madiquel looked up at Jajojin quite seriously, chewing on her bottom lip. “I want to be a Healer,” she said, quite firmly, her frown refusing to budge. “I want to really help people, Papa,” she said, her expression softened into one of worry. “Is that okay?” She asked, genuinely worried that he wouldn’t approve.

So he hadn’t been overreacting. Okay. He could do this. He could be supportive. He could encourage her dreams. He could survive the silence that would surround him with her gone. He wasn’t sure how but Jajojin was almost confident he could achieve it. Maybe he could take up a hobby, though he wasn’t sure what. He had large hands so he didn’t think sitting in with the women as they did various types of needlework would work well and baking would leave him depressed since he wouldn’t have Madiquel around to sample what he made.

He had to stop thinking about that and the loneliness it was bringing on. The more he thought about it, the more he was likely to compare losing Madiquel to losing Denath and he didn’t want to scare her that night. Not that he ever wanted to, but the girl had already suffered from nightmares and didn’t need to cope with her crazy papa on top of that. He had to look after her, it was his job as a father. She never should have had to become his caretaker, especially when she was so young and having done it for so long. She deserved true happiness and to get what she wanted and Jajojin was determined to find peace within himself to make it happen and found a smile for her, a genuine one that reached his eyes.

“Of course it’s okay. Your heart is so big and filled with enough love for everyone. I’d expect nothing less of my girl.” Jajojin was genuinely proud of Madiquel and how she seemed to be able to like everyone and encourage them to do their best. She was always there for her friends and was willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed. She was well-suited for the life of a Healer. She was just too young to pursue it and who knew what the Healer Hall thought about the Weyrs lately.

He was going to have to have a talk with R’nya and make sure the man could make his baby girl’s dreams come true and get her into the Hall one way or another. Bribery could work. Did they have anything on the Masterhealer for blackmail? R’nya was stubborn, there was a chance simply talking could achieve the goal as well. But Jajojin would make sure it happened soon to make Madiquel happy.

Jajojin’s silence worried Madiquel, because she was afraid that his answer would be the negative; that he didn’t think she’d make a good Healer or because he wouldn’t approve of a girl being a healer – even if they sometimes were – and she just knew she couldn’t do it if he didn’t approve. Madiquel would never do anything her Papa didn’t approve of, and if he said no, well, he would have a good reason for it and she would accept it. After all, Papa only did what was best for her, and she loved him too much to hurt him by being difficult.

When he smiled and she could see it in his eyes, and he said yes, Madiquel’s expression burst into life, her face lighting up and a wide smile claiming her face, teeth flashing in the soft light of the glows as she threw herself forward (as opposed to the relaxed slump she was in) and wrapped her arms gleefully around her Papa’s neck. “Thank you!” she said, almost sobbing as she cried again, but this time she was happy! She was going to be useful to the Weyr. She was going to be useful to her Papa, and she was going to be helping her friends. She’d be a meaningful member of the Weyr and would never have to Impress a dragon!

Sniffling, Madiquel leaned back slightly and then up, placing a loving kiss on her Papa’s cheek and beaming at him as she curled against his chest once more. She really didn’t want to ever leave her Papa, but she would worry about that later. Maybe she could train Clover to stay with him, if out of the way, and report back to her if he needed her. She could teach her an emergency signal! That way if Papa started to fall into a Bad Day, Clover could let her know and she could come home and help him!
