The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Slowly, and trying to keep what felt like the remnants of a significant dream from slipping from her memory, Mulrissa woke up, bits and pieces of thoughts gradually slotting into place, forming a coherent narrative. And as the story came together, Rissa’s sleepy contentment washed away, though she could still feel the strands of it, along with a deep self satisfaction, bleeding into her mind from Bedith, who was stirring not far away.

Bedith. Her headstrong dragon had finally decided it was time for her to Fly. Mulrissa could remember, her shining gold even more brilliant in the light of the setting sun. She wouldn’t have been surprised if the vain thing planned that, so she’d look even more impressive on her first Flight. It was dark out now though, and Mulrissa sat up to glance about at the now dim weyr, thankfully her own. She could remember realizing Bedith would Fly earlier enough to send Ginorra off to Vinorra with an overnight bag. He daughter may be weyrbred, but she was only thirteen and Mulrissa would not allow her to stay in their weyr with all the flight lust addled men about, not if she could help it! Rissa could also remember the struggle that had been keeping Bedith from gorging before taking to the skies (having children certainly helped her maintain control in that situation, with all the practice enforcing her will it gave her). She remembered the other dragons, many bronzes, also shining in the light but none so bright as her gold, browns who looked dull in comparison, and at least one blue who Bedith had laughed at for his audacity. And then…

Ah, yes. The winner. Syrendreth, one of the younger bronzes, though older than Bedith herself. Bedith was rather pleased with him as winner, and Rissa couldn’t fault her choice in males. She just rather wished Syrendreth’s rider wasn’t so young. Mulrissa sighed, looking down at the young man still asleep beside her. ‘Boy’ would still be an appropriate term for T’ryn, though Mulrissa rather did not want to focus on that. Shards, he was only two or so turns older than Chalris… Bedith was lucky Mulrissa loved her and had accepted what she was getting into with a gold dragon turns ago. Accepting it did not make it any less awkward to live it, she was finding.

Still, no point in prolonging the inevitable and sitting here worrying about what to say for however long it took for the boy bronzerider to wake up. Rissa was pretty sure this was his first Flight too, so this was likely to be an interesting conversation. It may have been her first Flight with a dragon, but she’d been mated to a bluerider for turns. She at least had some experience with it. T’ryn, she had no idea. He was weyrbred and seventeen? Eighteen? He likely had some experience, right? But Mulrissa didn’t know for sure and wasn’t willing to assume, though she really hoped this wasn’t his first time. That just made everything more… something. Complicated? Rissa huffed quietly, deciding to bury as much of the internal panicking and screaming about all the ways this was uncomfortable as far back in her mind as possible, and just get this conversation over with. Course of action set, Mulrissa lightly reached out to T’ryn’s shoulder to try and gently shake him awake.

T'ryn startled awake when someone shook his shoulder. Blue eyes popped open, instantly alert from the unusual wake up call. At least he wasn't the type to wake up swining. He heard tales from some friends who had a father, sibling, or lover who did that and they sported the black eye or scratch mark before learning to either jump back or simple call them from across the room. He wasn't sure who he thought would wake him like that but Mulrissa wasn't anywhere near the top of his list.

He stared at her in obvious confusion before reality started crashing back down around him and eyes widened with realisation as he sat up. There had been a Flight and Syrendryth had obviously won. Why did that large lump of bronze enter? He had said before that he wasn't ready for Flights. That was how he had ended up in Benden Weyr, chatting with Casa and deciding he really liked her. Wait, Casa. Syrendryth said he was ready now before he took off to chase. Clearly his sexual frustrations from Casa's teasing over the last few weeks was good enough for a dragon.

He recalled N'mor hadn't chased. T'ryn had glanced around for Rhezalth, secretly hoping that if they both lost they could lose together and it would all just be shrugged off as part of a Flight. But nope; both bronze beasts had betrayed him and left him in bed with an older woman. It wasn't even that she was older or woman, it was more that she wasn't Casa and this had been not only a first Flight and win but his first time having sex.

And he barely remembered any of it.

T'ryn felt his cheeks warming and glanced down to his lap where he saw that he didn't even have a sheet covering him; though the desire to pull up the non-existent sheet until he could hide under it probably wasn't the most mature thing to do anyway. He should say something to Mulrissa but he didn't know what to say. It wasn't like they taught post-Flight etiquette in Candidate or Weyrling classes. Congratulating her wasn't right, unless he wanted to say it was for having her Maiden Flight, which still didn't seem appropriate. Thanking her seemed awkward and what would it be for? Winning? A good time he didn't remember? Making his life more complicated than it was already becoming? A simple greeting to acknowledge her presence even though he had gawked at her and turned away blushing? Maybe just asked to be excused? Ugh, no, he wasn't in class with a stomache ache.

So he sat there, confused with his emotions that wanted him to flee and the ones coming from Syrendryth that wanted him to stay and cuddle up with Mulrissa like he did with Bedith. One emotion both sides agreed on was the relief that the Flight hadn't happened during the family gathering that had N'mor and T'ryn there in the first place as thei visited their dads. He'd never live that down if he had to stumble his way from the table to go chase a goldrider.

It only took a moment for T’ryn to wake up, though it took longer for him to realize where he was. Mulrissa could see the mental journey from confusion to realization play out on his face, wondering if she had looked much the same. She didn’t know exactly what was going on in his blond head, but she hoped it wasn’t too bad. Embarrassment she could deal with, anger or true panic? No, Rissa was not as confident in her ability to handle those in a teenager she hardly knew. Met, sure, she was friends with his father — and didn’t that make the whole situation more interesting — but she hardly knew him. Noting T’ryn’s blush and downward glance, Rissa carefully leaned off the bed to grab a nearby sheet, placing it on the bed between them.

“Here,” She said, gesturing to the sheet, “If you want it.” She added, not wanting to force him to cover up if he didn’t want to; She just thought he’d appreciate the option. Though, thinking about it, maybe she should cover up to. That probably wasn’t helping him either. Mulrissa didn’t particularly mind being naked in front of people anymore, but if it might make T’ryn more comfortable, she was hardly against it. She leaned off the bed again, snagging one of her decorative blankets to wrap around her shoulders and cover some of the more important bits. Settling back onto the bed, she considered T’ryn for a moment. He didn’t seem likely to start doing anything anytime soon, so Rissa figured she would have to take the initiative if either of them wanted to continue with their daily lives instead of sitting interminably in her bed.

“How are you doing, T’ryn?” She asked softly, trying to make the question as neutral as possible. Mulrissa wasn’t judging him — she knew she would have been mortified if her maiden flight had happened when she was seventeen. Sure, she’d flight mothed some at that age, but as moth you had much more conscious choice over what you did and whether or not you did it. With a dragon, you were caught up in the whirlwind that was the dragon’s desires. Rissa had thought she understood what Flights were like, having seen them, participated in them for turns, but she had done so as an outsider. While bonded to a dragon it was a completely different experience, and she was a little unsteady herself. She was honestly surprised by how together she was being, though it may be in part because of how unsure T’ryn was, and her instinct to be the adult here. And perhaps Bedith’s contentment and self-assurance didn’t hurt either.

T’ryn stared at the sheet that had been offered to him, trying to decide if he should feel relieved or insulted. He didn’t know her well but knew enough to know Mulrissa wouldn’t do something to purposely insult or offend. If anything, she always seemed rather calm and poised. Maybe that was part of the trouble he was having right then. He knew her as a friend of his father’s and she was always so nice to him and while he didn’t want to say she was motherly, especially while they were naked in bed together, that kindness was appreciated and he respected her. When she grabbed a blanket to throw over her own shoulders, it only proved his thoughts about her and a tiny little crooked smile appeared as he grabbed the sheet and draped it over his lap.

“Fine,” he answered automatically though he really wasn’t fine at all. So many questions swirled through his head that T’ryn wondered if he could just lie down and sleep a bit longer. Some of that desire to sleep was likely due to how exhausted and stiff he was starting to feel from the Flight. And that was another thing; it was his first time and he didn’t think it was appropriate to ask how he did, especially since Mulrissa wouldn’t have remembered much for what they did together and it was her first Flight as well so it wasn’t like they could trade compliments in that area either.

And how would their Hatching go? Syrendryth was clutchmates with Rhezalth! Rhezalth is too good to be the cause of that mess and so am I. We come from a better gene pool. Now stop worrying; you’re ruining my good mood this proper gold has put me in. T’ryn was about to apologise when that silky voice entered his mind but something the dragon had said made him pause. A proper gold? If Casa didn’t kill him, Thallyath would! How could they chase another gold pair when he was dating Casa? This was all Syrendryth’s fault and T’ryn wasn’t sure he wanted to talk to his dragon anymore. At least that panic cleared a bit more fog from his brain.

“Overwhelmed, actually,” T’ryn knew Mulrissa was genuine in her questioning his well-being and she deserved an honest answer. The fact that she hadn’t kicked him out was also nice. He didn’t expect an invitation to stay the night or anything – and would have panicked about how to turn her down if she did – but giving him time to adjust to everything that had happened and what it all meant was more helpful than she may have known.

“This was the first Flight we entered.” Another thought occurred to him when he stopped staring at the sheet he hadn’t realised he was fiddling with and looked back up to Mulrissa. Did she have a mate or someone she was seeing? Was he bronze or even brown? Had she hoped he would her first Flight? He secretly hoped Syrendryth would win Thallyath’s whenever she decided to Rise. “I hope you’re not… disappointed… with the results. Maybe you had someone else in mind and my bronze mountain got in the way.”

Mulrissa mentally breathed a sigh of relief when T’ryn said he was fine and took the sheet. She didn’t believe he was ‘fine’ in the slightest, but at least he was responding now. Hopefully within a minute or two some of the Flight fogginess would clear, for both of them, and — what, they could talk more? About what? Rissa wanted to make sure T’ryn was in an okay headspace, yes, but what would they say to each other that wouldn’t make this whole situation even more awkward. Her worry eased even further a few moments later when T’ryn continued talking.

She nodded when he admitted to being overwhelmed. That was a feeling she shared. Being with your dragon so completely when they were that emotional and focused was intense, to say the least. Though Mulrissa felt that most of the ‘Flight hangover’ as she’d heard it called would be easily fixed with sleep and maybe a glass of water. The part that would linger was definitely the awkwardness of who had won, and how terribly young he seemed.

T’ryn continued, confirming her thought that it was his first Flight too. She frowned at his concern that she was disappointed — as if she needed another reminder of how young he was — and shook her head. “No, I didn’t have my sights set on anyone in particular.” Even if G’chal had still been alive and her weyrmate, his blue Wudalth would never have caught Bedith, the gold would never have allowed it. Since G'chal was beyond not an option, Rissa had figured one of the older bronzes, like Torath, or Adraith, or perhaps Kovith if he hadn’t caught Okalinth recently, would have caught Bedith, especially her maiden Flight. She had not expected Syrendreth to decide to Fly for the first time and catch her gold. “You’re not who I expected, or really my first choice, no offense intended, but I was not hoping for anyone in particular. Syrendryth did no particular harm on that front.” Mulrissa assured him. She didn’t want T’ryn to feel bad about winning, as it was hardly his fault.

“Would you like a glass of water or anything?” She asked him, thinking perhaps something to drink would do her some good as well. “You’re welcome to stay and recover for a bit, make sure your head is clear enough to head home. The bed here is open, or if you prefer, my son’s bed is still around. He’s in the Candidate barracks these days, but we kept the bed in case we needed it.” Rissa figured she’d stay in Chalris or Ginorra's bed if T'ryn wanted to stay where he was, as Ginorra wouldn’t be back anytime soon either, though she would happily remain in her own bed instead of borrowing one of her children’s. She just didn’t really want to stay in the same one for longer than absolutely necessary.

T'ryn nodded when Mulrissa said she didn't have anyone she wanted to win her Flight, relief just about to set in when she went on to say he wasn't expected or a first choice of hers and couldn't help but wince. He really wasn't offended and nodded again so she knew he wasn't but he couldn't stop the comparisons between him and his dad, especially since Ayontay had confided in him about what had happened at Nerreh's party. He knew they both looked a lot like R'nd and had grown up hearing how everyone thought R'nd was amazing and that greenriders wanted him to win their Flights since he was attractive and kind even in Flightlust. But here was a goldrider telling him he wasn't her first choice, marking another difference between sons and father. Ayontay would have been over the moon to have that told to him but T'ryn had always admired R'nd and wanted to be like him and make him proud. It wasn't Mulrissa's fault though. He was both young and had issues that seemed to run through most of the R'nd Kids when it came to being acceptance and abandonment.

He was starting to nod again when the offer for water was given but stopped and stared at her wide-eyed when there was also an offer to stay in bed. When clarifcation came that she had extra beds, it didn't relieve T'ryn any and he managed to shake his head in the negative. It wasn't that he had been worried he was being invited to a second helping, but the rumour mill was insane in the Weyrs and no matter what bed he was in, everyone would assume they had stayed in each other's embrace all night which meant Casa would find out before he even returned to Ista. Winning a Flight was one thing and she'd likely --hopefully-- forgive that but he didn't believe she'd forgive him willingly going in for more.

"N-no thanks. I'll stay with R'nd or a friend if I need to," not that he could think of any friends at Telgar in the moment. His head was still fuzzy and adding in confusion and nerves from the experience meant he was next to useless. As long as he could still dress himself and walk down some halls, T'ryn would consider himself a full functioning human again.

Except dressing himself required clothes that seemed to be everywhere but not in bed with him. He had no idea how to articulate the thoughts running circles in his head but finally T'ryn decided that had slept together and been chatting in the nude so did it really matter if he took a stroll around the room to find his clothes? Carefully one foot and then the other was lowered over the edge of the bed to the ground where T'ryn debated taking the sheet with him after all. Instead, he looked for his clothing and mapped out a path to take him to each piece. Starting with the underwear, he slipped off the bed to start working on the path to being dressed.

The momentary panic T’ryn showed at being invited to stay before realizing she meant in another bed amused Mulrissa. She was actually rather relieved by the reaction; She really didn’t want to deal with some teenager who felt they now had some sort of thing because their dragons had a fling. Not that she had worried about that with T’ryn, but the confirmation was still good.

“Probably a good idea,” Rissa said, nodding at him. “You’ll sleep better somewhere you know and feel comfortable.” And it would be easier on Mulrissa herself and make her more comfortable too, but she wasn’t going to say that bit out loud. She was definitely feeling as if she’d been the one flying as fast and as far as she could, and it had already been late in the first place, so being able to sleep in her own bed without having to worry about T’ryn would be nice. Rissa didn’t even have to worry about Ginorra until tomorrow morning at the earliest, and she would very much like to take advantage of having the weyr to herself and sleep as long as she could get away with.

Carefully paying attention to the pattern on the blanket wrapped around her and not at T’ryn so as to give him the semblance of privacy while he searched for his clothes, Mulrissa added “The water is still on offer, if you want it. And if you’re spending the night or a few more hours in Telgar, Syrendryth is welcome to stay until Bedith kicks him out, which is likely not until tomorrow morning if he’s well behaved.” Honestly, ‘well behaved’ mostly meant letting Bedith sleep and not trying to wake her up before the gold was good and ready to rouse for the day. Her dragon did love to sleep and got grouchy when kept from it. Mulrissa remembered how cranky Bedith had been after being forced to sit through Nadioth’s Hatching when she just wanted to sleep. She’d acted up for the next three days afterwards. Which, Rissa realized with the benefit of hindsight, might have been the first clue that Bedith was getting ready to Rise. Extra grumpiness about lost sleep. She carefully filed that hint away for future reference and continued pointedly averting her gaze and letting T’ryn dress without an audience.

T’ryn was having a heck of a time trying to get his pants on. It seemed balance was not a friend of his that night as he hopped around on one foot trying to get the other to cooperate and find the other leg of his pants. When he finally succeeded, he glanced to the bed and saw Mulrissa was carefully studying the blanket and smiled. She really was a cool lady and he supposed if he had to win a Flight that wasn’t Casa’s, he was glad it was hers. She’d been nothing but kind to him and didn’t make any of it awkward, which was definitely appreciated. “No, thank you. You don’t have to trouble yourself over me.” Maybe ‘motherly’ was the right term for Mulrissa after all, though it was still weird to use given what they had just done.

He found his shirt next, tossed it on, and then considered his boots. Given the struggle with his pants, T’ryn decided he’d rather walk barefoot through the halls until he reached whatever his destination would be. So he picked them up and shuffled toward the door. He paused, feeling guilty for just leaving and turned back to face Mulrissa, dutifully keeping his gaze on her face, despite the blanket that he assumed covered everything – he wasn’t going to risk a look! “Thank you, Mulrissa. This hasn’t been as awkward as I always worried it would be,” he managed a smile as a bit of playfulness returned. He had seen the state of riders after Flights and heard stories of what could come after waking back up to themselves so naturally an active imagination had created so many scary scenarios and T’ryn was relieved, for once, to find he had been wrong.

“And you can keep Syrendryth as long as you want. I might have some quiet tonight with him happy and distracted,” quiet sounded amazing as he worked his way out of the lingering haze of lust and sorted out everything he was confused over. Listening to his dragon compare Bedith and Thallyath all night and pointing out which gold pair he found to be better for them was not something T’ryn wanted to do and hoped his dragon stayed with Bedith until morning.

A combination of spending too much time at his aunt’s Hold around lords and ladies as well as wanting to show Mulrissa he respected her had T’ryn giving the goldrider a small bow. It wasn’t very deep and it lacked any flourish he had seen some men do but he felt it conveyed what he wanted before he gave a verbal good bye and left the bedroom and eventually the weyr.

Once in the hall, he heaved a sigh of relief. Syrendryth’s lingering lust and contentment was actually starting to bother him the more he started to get over his internal struggle of emotions and fears. He hadn’t wanted to make an accidental advancement on Mulrissa and was happy to have doors between them. Now he just had to figure out where he wanted to sleep and who would tease him the least about the Flight.

Mulrissa smiled as T’ryn thanked her, dipping her head slightly to him. “And you were a perfect gentleman, which I greatly appreciate.” She’d heard plenty of post-Flight stories over the turns, and ‘short polite conversation before going their separate ways’ was probably one of the best. Other than perhaps ‘end up with someone you really like and continue to have amazing sex,’ but since there was no one Rissa was particularly invested in, the outcome she got was almost ideal (Though T’ryn was still a bit uncomfortably young in her eyes).

She quickly checked in on Bedith again, who was still sleeping contently, though she stirred questioningly at Rissa’s mental touch. Reassuring her dragon that everything was fin, Rissa explained that Syrendryth would probably be staying the rest of the night. Bedith hummed approvingly and shifted her bulk closer to the bronze, simultaneously leaning into him affectionately and blocking his access to the weyr entrance. He’s not leaving until I allow him to. She said, mindvoice thick with drowsiness. Mulrissa smiled, amused at how possessive Bedith was being. Chances were very good Bedith would be bored with him by noon the next day and wonder why he had to have anything to do with her Hatching.

“I hope you have a good rest of the night, T’ryn.” Mulrissa called after him as he left her weyr. Once the door had clicked into place, she sighed deeply and closed her eyes for a moment, letting herself drop all defenses before looking tiredly around the room. It seemed a few things had gotten knocked over in the mayhem of the Flight. The chair she was pretty sure had been pushed over when Bedith— she had pushed a brownrider off her and careening into the chair. Whoops. However, nothing seemed broken or immediately important, so Mulrissa decided she’d deal with it after some sleep. Though maybe a bath first would be a good idea, she decided, throwing off the blanket and heading for the bath. An excellent perk of being a goldrider, having a very large dragon, and having children was that Rissa had been allowed to claim a very nice, large weyr that had a private bathroom that she was planning on fully taking advantage of right now before curling up in her bed for as long as she could get away with.
