A’tay stood a couple of feet away from Xyxyth who was happily stuffing his face from the bucket full of meat. A Healer was currently re-bandaging his hand and telling him that it needed stitches but he supposed a couple more hours wouldn’t hurt so long as he didn’t strain the hand or get it dirty. That sounded a lot easier than done considering he had to bathe and oil Xyxyth before getting him home to nap.

The Healer left him to check on the other Candidate that had met an excited dragonet earlier just as Madiquel came running in. A’tay was sure he was still a bit in shock from the bite and was seeing things until his friend threw her arms around him and started crying. He understood. It was relief, happiness, fear, sadness, all rolled into one and as he returned the hug, he found the emotions starting to flood back to him stronger than they had while standing there watching everything happen.

When she sank to the floor, he followed suit and took one of her hands in his good one. He was thankful that he was left-handed and the dragonet had a taste for right hands, though with the tasks ahead of him for the next several weeks, he really wished he had both hands in perfect working order. He stared at their hands, not sure what to say and knowing what he wished he could say he couldn’t anymore. Not freshly Impressed. Xyxyth seemed kind of chill but he didn’t want to upset him with showing too much affection for the girl he liked.

As it was, A’tay felt a stir of discomfort and curiosity coming from Xyxyth as the bronze finished his mouthful and looked their way. A’tay countered it with his own panic, doing his best to hide his feelings for Madiquel, mostly so the dragonet didn’t spill the beans and say anything he shouldn’t. “Um… this is Madiquel, my best friend. And this is Xyxyth, my uh dragon.” It was kind of obvious but he felt like he had to say something else about the little guy like he did with Madiquel.

Hello, nice to meet you, Xyxyth dipped his head in greeting and studied Madiquel. What made her a best friend? How was that different from a not-best friend? He could tell she was important to A’tay but he currently couldn’t figure out why. Unless he liked girls that cried. Maybe tears tasted good? He sat down and leaned in a bit closer so he could flick his tongue out at her cheek. He instantly leaned back and stuck his tongue back out in what A’tay could only imagine was meant to show disgust. Tears taste funny.

A’tay chuckled even as he hoped Madiquel wasn’t about to die from fright at a dragonet in her face after everything that had happened but she hadn’t run away screaming so that was good. Although, that may have been due to him holding her hand. “You don’t lick tears, Xyxyth. You wipe them away when you see a pretty girl crying,” he didn’t notice the compliment he had freely given his crush even as he boldly – an oddity for him – wiped his thumb across the cheek that had been licked to remove dragon spit and tears.

I suppose I will leave that to you since I lack the proper thumbs, Xyxyth held out a paw as if the comparison was truly needed. I still have itchy spots. Do your thumbs work on them as well? And you didn’t tell her your name.

A’tay scrunched up his nose at the reminder that it was time to bathe and oil the bronze hide he was still marvelling over bonding to. “She knows my… oh. It’s A’tay… do you like it? And um, do you want to help clean him? It might take me a while with one hand.” He winced, not wanting to remind Madiquel of his injury, though it was hard not to notice the linen wrapped around it.

Madiquel clung to the hand that reached out to take her own, using her other hand to hide her mouth behind as she sobbed like she was a broken child. She was so relieved that Ayontay was safe now, and off the sands, but she was scared too. What if the brown gave him hassles during their classes? What if she couldn’t come and see him as much as she would like during the next – how long was it? – year and some before he graduated. What if he didn’t want to come back to Fort when he did graduate? She couldn’t leave her Papa and even though he would be able to visit her whenever he wanted, it wouldn’t be the same as living in the same Weyr. She cried harder.

A soft sob broke through, as Madiquel tried to control herself, and she gave a jumpy inbreath, squeezing Ayontay’s hand again as he spoke to the dragon, introducing her. When he gave her the little bronze’s name, Madiquel sniffled and spoke it softly, rolling the letters off her tongue tentatively. “Xyxyth,” her voice was gentle, green eyes shifting to look at the little bronze. Her eyes widened when he spoke to her. She was used to hearing dragonets – it was hard not to – but it was different when the little one was speaking directly to her. She bit her lip, smiling through her slowing tears and sniffled again.

Madiquel almost fainted in terror when Xyxyth leaned forward to lick her face, her eyes dilating in horror and her face going stark white. Too afraid to breathe, her whole body trembled as her stomach turned to ice and her blood stopped flowing. When he leaned back with a look of disgust and his tongue sticking out, she stared at him without moving, in shock. His words would have made her giggle, if she hadn’t been more concerned with learning how to breathe again. Madiquel jumped when Ayontay brushed his thumb against her cheek, his touch startling her before she breathed again, relaxing and momentarily tilting her head against his touch before sitting up straight. She hadn’t even heard Ayontay speak, too focused on not fainting to realise he’d said anything at all, let alone called her pretty.

A quiet giggle finally came free when Xyxyth spoke again, holding his paw out towards them and she had to restrain herself from reaching out and brushing her fingers over the pretty hide. He hadn’t hurt her, just wanted to taste her tears (which was weird, but he was a baby!) and he was bonded to Ayontay; how could he possibly be a bad creature to bond to someone as sweet and wonderful as her friend? With that thought firmly planting itself in her heart, Madiquel took Ayontay’s hand again, since the dragonet didn’t seem to mind that contact, and squeezed it gently.

Madiquel blinked when Xyxyth said she didn’t know Ayontay’s name, and she tilted her head. Oh! She’d forgotten that riders got new names! She didn’t even know what any of Ayontay’s name-hopes had been! She figured that because she personally had no interest in Impressing, and since she was a girl and her name wouldn’t change anyway, that the boys didn’t really discuss it with girls. Or maybe they just didn’t discuss it with her? She wasn’t upset, though; she knew the name-change was dragon chosen (her father had told her that, when his name reverted) and he’d once told her that most boys didn’t share their thoughts. What if someone said the name he liked was dumb? A dragon’s opinion wouldn’t be considered that, but a boy’s might!

“I do,” Madiquel said softly, flushing shyly as she rolled his name around in her mind, but not quite confident enough to speak it at the moment. His next question had her eyes widening in surprise and she stared at Ayon-A’tay in wonder. “Can I?” Madiquel whispered, voice barely audible as she glanced between young rider and younger dragon. Would he really let her? Would their Weyrlingmaster? She knew that it had happened in the past (Xyxyth’s sire was a case-in-point since his rider had been in a coma for much of the first few weeks). But… well, Ayon-A’tay wasn’t missing his arm, like N’mor, he was just… well, she turned her attention to his injured hand and gently picked it up, brushing her fingers over the bandages.

Maybe she’d ask her Papa if she could go to the Healer Hall, while Ayon-A’tay was in Weyrlinghood, so she could learn how to be a Healer and help people when they got hurt, like he had been and like her Papa had been, and those poor girls who had died on the sands… “I’d really like that,” she said gently, smiling up at Ayontay warmly, half in answer to her own thoughts and half in answer to his invitation.

He smiled and felt his cheeks warm. A’tay knew he wanted her approval over his new name but didn’t realise how much it meant to him until Madiquel’s softly spoken admission. He wasn’t quite sure what he would change his name to if she didn’t like this one though. Would he even be allowed to? Xyxyth had given it to him and they had already given their names to the Weyrlingmaster. Thankfully, he wouldn’t have to find out as they all seemed to like the name, though A’tay felt it would take some time before he was used to being called that and just comfortable in general with carrying a dragonrider’s honorific as his own.

A’tay didn’t understand Madiquel’s hesitation over helping him with Xyxyth’s cleanliness. He had helped her with Clover often enough and then when he Impressed Shadow, they had bathed their firelizards together. Thinking about the little blue was apparently enough of an invitation to have him return as Shadow popped into existence several feet above their heads, the cool breeze of between welcomed after standing on the Sands for so long. Shadow Xyxyth stared each other down for a long moment as the firelizard landed on his shoulder and A’tay was afraid a fight might break out. Given all that had happened during the Hatching, he wouldn’t have been surprised. But the two seemed to think they could share him as Shadow chirped a greeting and then hopped off his shoulder to nudge around in the remnants of Xyxyth’s meal.

During their mini showdown, A’tay realised how different the two creatures were and finally understood some of Madiquel’s hesitation. “Xyxyth, are you okay with Madi helping me with your bath?” He was going to have to get used to asking the dragon his opinions on things. Sure, he spoke to Shadow all the time but firelizards weren’t nearly as intelligent as dragons and he always seemed happy with any ideas.

She may help. You’re injured, I itch, and she seems capable. Xyxyth felt it was all perfect logic and sat down again to wait for the bath. He had watched the firelizard steal some of his food he hadn’t finished yet but didn’t do anything to stop the creature. He was kind of cute and harmless so he was left alone. But do hurry. Others are wrapping up with their tasks and I don’t want to be left here all day while everyone leaves us behind.

“Yes, sir,” A’tay chuckled and shifted to sit on his knees. He pulled the bucket of water an assistant had set beside them a bit ago closer to them and set to work.

Madiquel giggled softly when Clover swooped down from the rafters, following after Shadow as she swirled around in the air before landing lightly on Madiquel’s shoulder. She chirped a cheerful and friendly greeting to the newly hatched bronze dragon and nuzzled against Madiquel’s cheek with her face. Madiquel petted her gently as Ayontay seemed to take in what she’d said a moment ago. She smiled gently when he asked the little bronze his opinion, looking down at her lap shyly. She really hoped the young dragon found her a worthy friend of Ayontay! She couldn’t imagine what she’d do if his dragon hated her and didn’t want her to be around him!

Wide eyes looked up when Xyxyth spoke again, and Madiquel blushed hotly, pleased, and beamed at both Weyrlings. “Thank you!” Madiquel said, delighted, and she shuffled around to be closer to Ayontay, not letting his hand go until the last moment when he reached out to grab a water bucket. Peering across him, she noticed there was only one sponge in the bucket and pouted for a moment, wondering where she’d get another one from. She was just looking up and around when she spotted the Weyrlingmaster approaching them. Madiquel shrank back a little, almost hiding behind Ayontay, when the man held a sponge out towards her. She flushed again, realising he (or his dragon) had heard what Xyxyth had said. She mumbled thanks and took the sponge.

Placing one hand gently on Ayontay’s knee, Madiquel leaned across him to dip the sponge in the water and give it a half squeeze, before sloshing the water across Xyxyth’s hide, smiling happily to herself as she cleaned the drying egg-gunk off him. “You are beautiful,” she told Xyxyth happily, taking her hand off Ayontay’s knee to trace a line of colour along the hatchling’s hind leg through the water that was on it. She tilted her head slightly and gave Ayontay a playful smirk. “You better not hurt your hand too often,” she teased, wagging her finger in his face. “Especially when he’s finished growing and is like thiiis big!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms wide and beaming.

A’tay dipped his head in embarrassment when he realised after the fact that there was only one sponge. Of course there would be, only one human bonded to a dragon so they didn’t need more than one of each item to get through the cleaning. He was relieved when another sponge appeared and smiled at Madiquel as she jumped right into the task as well, noting her hand on his knee as she did so. He really wished he had found the courage before the Hatching to confess his feelings for her. Then again, it was probably best he hadn’t. If she had returned them, they would have to be put on hold for Xyxyth. At that thought, the dragon turned to look at him, head tilted to the side in consideration but thankfully didn’t say anything as Madiquel distracted them.

Am I? Xyxyth looked back to where the girl was running her fingers over his hide and considered the light pattern there. He supposed it was rather lovely and crooned softly in thanks for the compliment. At a nudge from A’tay, Xyxyth stood up so they could reach under him which gave him a chance to look around at his own hide a bit more, though he knew from A’tay’s thoughts that it would change as he got older, which seemed a shame.

“Don’t worry; without you here to help, it’d be a total waste of an injury,” A’tay laughed as he squeezed his sponge along Xyxyth’s side, sending rivers of water running down to the sand below. He was having to concentrate on keeping his wounded hand in his lap as he found at first he wanted to keep steadying himself against Xyxyth with it or to pull the bucket closer. “And I hope he doesn’t get to be thaaat big! I don’t know how T’ryn manages to keep Syrendryth bathed and oiled so regularly. I swear once he’s done he has to start again. Luckily for us, I think we’re about ready to switch to the oil.”

Finally. The water and sponge were nice but look at how happy my sister is with the oil on her, Xyxyth nodded in the direction of a green bouncing from foot to foot as her bonded finished up applying the oil, laughing along with her.

Madiquel pouted unhappily at the reminder that Ayontay would be staying in Ista Weyr with his young dragon, and not going to her home in Fort with her; it would have been so much better if he'd Impressed there! She was looking forward to going home and seeing her Papa – the trip away from him had been hard and she’d found the nights to be incredibly lonely knowing her father wasn’t right there if she needed him, even though the other women in the room she’d been assigned were nice enough. The days were easy to get through, with friends and the anticipation of the upcoming Hatching, but she’d spent most nights silently crying herself to sleep. She missed her papa and her home and her bed. And now she wouldn’t have Ayontay around to spend time with. Madiquel sighed softly and dropped her head on Ayontay’s shoulder, still pouting.

“You Hatched in the wrong Weyr,” she told Xyxyth with a sad playfulness, smiling with her lips though her eyes were sad. Sitting up properly, she flashed a bright smile at Ayontay, not wanting him to be upset about his Impression. “You’ll have to send Shadow to let me know when you have important lessons!” She said, clasping the sponge between both hands and not noticing the way it dripped on her lap. “So I can get Papa to let me come watch!” She wanted to be there when Xyxyth and Ayontay went for their first flight and between training was scary but she had to be present for that! What if something awful happened to someone in their class? She’d be worried sick thinking it was Ayontay and Xyxyth! No, she definitely had to be present for at least the first one of those classes!

Madiquel giggled when Ayontay said they should switch to the oil and Xyxyth commented on that. Her gaze shifted to the little green dragon and she giggled again, enjoying the way the baby was dancing around. “Do you want to dance, too?” She asked Xyxyth, her voice playfully teasing. She didn’t know, but he seemed rather serious to be dancing around like his sister. Maybe he’d surprise her, though! That would be fun! Standing up gracefully, Madiquel fetched the bucket of oil closer and collected a second cloth so she could assist still. Returning, she set the bucket down beside her friend and dipped the cloth in, wriggling her fingers with a giggle at the silky and slimy feeling of the liquid oil on her hands.

Waiting just long enough for Ayontay to be the first one to slap the sweet relief on his dragon, Madiquel slicked the cloth over Xyxyth’s hip and down the back of his leg, watching the way it lit up his bronze hide. “So beautiful,” she whispered, almost awestruck.

Xyxyth tilted his head as he looked at Madiquel, trying to figure out what she meant by hatching in the wrong Weyr. If he hatched somewhere else, then he wouldn't have found A'tay so he was right where he was supposed to be, wasn't he?

Sensing his dragon's confusion -- which was an odd sensation since he wasn't the one that was confused but still felt tendrils of the emotion swirlling around his head -- A'tay took a moment to go over their conversation and figured out what would have been the cause and frowned a bit at the reminder but turned it back into a smile as he patted Xyxyth's head with an oily hand. "Madiquel lives in Fort Weyr and we'll be here in Ista Weyr until we graduate in fifteen months. So she's sad she won't see us that much."

He brightened at the thought of her coming to visit when he reached new stages in lessons, like flying. He was going to fly on his own dragon one day! A'tay's smile turned a bit brighter and wider as he was suddenly genuinely excited and overwhelmed at the idea. Maidquel definitely had to see that! And if it all went well and they had permission for little flights around the Weyr, he could go flying with her as well! He couldn't wait and while his dragon was barely out of his shell, he wondered when they would get to that point. He supposed he'd have to wait until Xyxyth was large enough to carry him. He did know from T'ryn's stories that they would have lessons in a few months that had him riding Xyxyth like a horse to practice moving together or something.

Xyxyth sensed A'tay's excitement and would ask about it later but he was still focused on Madiquel and the different Weyrs. Why don't you move here? Then we will see you more and everyone will be happy. He thought that was perfectly logical and didn't see what the problem was.

Xyxyth watched the happy green dance a bit more as he thought about everything he was learning about his bonded and his friend and shook his head when Madiquel asked if he wanted to dance. Perhaps later. Although I understand her desire to dance. The oil is very nice on my itchy spots that it could inspire dancing. Truthfully, he was getting a bit tired and didn't have the energy to dance. After a nap, though, he'd consider it. He heard a few weyrlings talking about a party in their honour later and that sounded like it could be fun.

"He really is," A'tay replied as he also admired Xyxyth's hide and how it shone with the oil on it. He loved the light pattern and hoped he kept it when he grew. Some dragons didn't have a shockingly different adult hide so maybe he'd get lucky as well. Syrendryth was a bit of a bright bronze, almost orange, colour when he hatched but matured into a colour that was more in line with Xyxyth's current colouring. Hopefully that didn't mean the opposite would happen!

Madiquel blinked, and then blushed when she realised she had confused the little dragon, twisting her fingers together. She smiled shyly at Xyxyth’s comment, but shook her head. “I can’t,” she said gently, glancing at A’tay and then back to the dragon. “I have to stay with my Papa.” He needed her – of course, in the time she’d been at Ista, she’d realised just how badly she needed her Papa, too. She’d never realised how easy it was to be lonely, even when surrounded by other people, nice people! She did have a new understanding for her father’s depressive moods now, though. She couldn’t image how much worse it would be to have had a dragon in your mind, and then have it empty…

Shuddering, Madiquel set her attention firmly back on the dragonet, and slicking oil across his hide for several minutes. Once she was sure she had gotten all of the little bronze that she’d self-assigned herself to, Madiquel set the cloth to one side and washed her hands in the bucket of soapy water that was still sitting nearby. She shook her hands to help dry them, and then grinned at her friend. “I think he’s done!” Leaning forward, she pressed a kiss to Xyxyth’s nose. “I’m so glad you found Ayo-A’tay,” she said seriously, smiling at the little dragon.

Standing up, Madiquel brushed sand from her skirts, and offered a hand to A’tay. She could see R’nya heading in their direction, and she wasn’t sure if he would want to go home right away, or if he was going to tell her when they would be heading home; it turned out to be the later, with the Weyrleader letting her know to be ready after lunch. Madiquel nodded seriously, reaching out to clasp A’tay’s hand. She wasn’t ready to go home and leave her friend and his dragon behind! Madiquel pouted at A’tay and Xyxyth, but her eyes sparkled with good humour.

“Me too,” A’tay answered the same time as Xyxyth did, making the boy laugh and throw his arms around Xyxyth’s neck for another hug. He was so happy he had Impressed and found, well, it was hard to explain and he didn’t think he’d be able to if he told Madiquel about it. But he already felt a calm settle down upon him, as if Xyxyth’s very existence had set things right again. He doubted it had and no doubt would continue worrying about what others thought about him and every other issue he’d been dealing with lately, but it currently didn’t matter and he was happy; relaxed.

A’tay took the hand and smiled and Madiquel for the help back up to his feet but frowned a little when R’nya was spotted. Was it time for them to part ways already? He mumbled some words of thanks when R’nya congratulated him and then stepped aside so he could talk with Madiquel as he leaned down to whisper to Xyxyth, “R’nya’s the Weyrleader where Madi lives. That means he’s a super awesome bronzerider.”

Xyxyth considered the bronzerider for a moment, head tilted one way and then the other, trying to see what made him so ‘super awesome’ and decided it was the way he held his head up and spoke with authority but also a kindness. You will be like him one day, Xyxyth declared as he glanced between his rider and the Weyrleader.

“Uh, no thanks. I don’t ever want to be Weyrleader,” A’tay’s eyes were wide as he thought about being in charge of everyone and making the decisions no one else would want to do and didn’t want to go anywhere near that job. A glance at Xyxyth told him the dragon may have thought otherwise on that topic. “The only thing I have in common with Weyrleader R’nya is that you’re like a baby version of his dragon named Xyreith.” That made Xyxyth’s eyes swirl with amusement and A’tay realised he had just fed his dragon more fuel to harass him with about being a leader.

When R’nya made his exit, A’tay frowned at Madiquel but squeezed her hand reassuringly. “We still have a bit of time together. Well, hopefully. I have to go with the class soon for nap time or something. Then we can hang out at the lunch and…” A’tay’s voice trailed off as he saw his family approaching. He was excited to see everyone but was already dreading hearing about how they all worried about his hand and he didn’t want to be fussed over. The perks of family, he supposed.

“You still have a chance to flee before they get here. Save yourself!” he whispered dramatically with feigned horror before smiling.

Madiquel giggled at the good natured bickering between her friend and his dragon, siding with Xyxyth but not actually coming out and saying it. She thought Ayontay would make a good Weyrleader, but she figured he’d have to … well, maybe not want the rank – she knew most of the current Weyrleaders hadn’t really wanted to be Weyrleader – but at least be confident that they’d do a better job than some other rider. Ayontay didn’t think that well of himself, but she was sure Xyxyth would change that! Ayontay had the makings to be a really great dragonrider, he just had to believe himself!

“You’re lucky its not reliant on flying a gold anymore,” Madiquel teased, knowing that if that was still the way it was done, there would be no way for Ayontay to get out of Xyxyth making him a Weyrleader! She giggled, amused by the vague similarities between the older dragon and the newly hatched. Her attention returned to her friend as he squeezed her hand back, and she stepped closer, bumping her shoulder against his good naturedly and petting Xyxyth on the head, gently scratching his eyeridge.

A’tay’s words falling away had her looking up at him curiously, slightly worried, and she followed his gaze to see his family coming towards them. Her face broke out into a wide grin and she waved happily. His parents still intimidated her slightly, not because they weren’t nice, but because she didn’t know them. She really liked Ayontay’s aunt, though, and when the woman was close enough she trotted over to her and gave her a hug, a silent thank you for her reassurance during the Hatching. “I like your family,” she teased, holding Eridella’s hand and grinning smugly at A’tay. She wasn’t going to help him escape them, not at all!

“Traitor,” A’tay pouted as Madiquel took up a position beside his aunt. It was honestly hard not to like her. She was pretty, confident, and made you feel at ease. He remembered his first time visiting her home with R’nd and T’ryn and being absolutely terrified that they wouldn’t like him or he’d feel left out. Minutes into the visit he wondered why he ever thought that. So it really didn’t surprise him that Madiquel had taken to her as easily. But he didn’t want her to be stuck listening to all of their fears and weeping – as his mother’s expression showed – or see him blush under all of the congratulations he knew was coming.

“Hi, everyone,” he mumbled, suddenly overwhelmed with a mix of emotions himself. He was tired, hungry, sore, and proud that he Impressed. Xyxyth nudged his good hand and A’tay absently started petting the top of his head as he considered what to say before everyone bombarded him with words and hugs. Might as well start with the obvious things. “Uh, this is Xyxyth. Xyxyth, this is my mom, little sister, little brother, aunt, dad, and B’jin who is my dad’s mate.” He eyed R’nd and B’jin briefly as he said the word and wondered if he just started a panic attack in either of them and if it would shift the attention of everyone. He hadn’t done it intentionally but if that was the result, he’d take it.

Standing behind everyone a few feet back he saw T’ryn and Casa and gave them a little wave with his bandaged hand. As they turned to leave, he wasn’t upset. He’d see them later and every day after that until at least graduation. Actually, he was relieved to have two less people fussing over him and knowing Casa, she’d tease him good-naturedly and leave him floundering to reply.

Suddenly his mother was hugging him and A’tay found himself consoling her, promising he was fine and that the Healer said his hand would be fine as well. He wasn’t entirely sure about that with how much it hurt and the brief view he had of it but he did his best to be optimistic. When he managed to break free of his mother’s grasp, A’tay willingly made his way down the line, giving everyone a hug. B’jin received one as well since he was part of the family – he’d been in R’nd’s life longer than any of his children after all.

Surprisingly he wasn’t bombarded with as many questions or concerns as he expected, though he imagined he’d hear more at a later time when the younger ones and his mom weren’t there to scare. Xyxyth seemed interested in the conversations and added a question himself here and there but observed interactions more than anything else until the Weyrlingmaster called for his class to wrap up.

A’tay smiled as he shooed them off. He knew the women and the kids had to get going but he suspected B’jin and R’nd would be back in time for the evening celebrations if not the lunch. Any reason for a party, especially if it involved someone else’s alcohol. He promised Madiquel he’d see her at lunch before he and Xyxyth trotted off after the rest of his class.
