He had Veeth to thank for his current companions.

R'vi had heard about the small winter gathering at the farm of R'nd's sister and he was kind of excited. Okay, he was ridiculously excited. He was born in Ista, grew up in Katila, and was back in Ista. He hadn't really had much of a chance to explore the more northern areas beyond the brief time he lived in Telgar. But winter games and snow itself seemed like fun and he had to properly check it out.

So, naturally, Indivara was at the top of the list of people to drag along on the adventure. She had been her usual stubborn self, doing her best to resist and then insisting she'd go if good ol' V'ler went as well. R'vi was close to giving up thanks to that condition, knowing V'ler could be just as stubborn and hated the cold but then Veeth chimed in. The sweet blue dragon with the even sweeter lyrical voice wanted to play in snow as well and thought it'd be fun so they should all go.

And so they all went.

Although, now that they were there and landing, R'vi was starting to understand V'ler's dislike of the cold. He was glad for the tip he had heard about wearing a good sweater under his riding jacket, though he was already starting to envy V'ler's warm-looking scarf he was huddled in. Still, they were there for fun and a little cold wasn't going to slow him down!

It might me, though, Vydoriath grumbled as he landed and started bouncing from foot to foot as the snow tumbled on his paws and got in between his claws. It was an interesting texture but a bit too cold. He wondered what it tasted like and as he settled down and crouched so R'vi could get down. Vydoriath first sniffed at the snow and then flicked his tongue at it. It didn't taste like anything and he gave the equivalent of a mental shrug to his rider who was watching him.

Figuring Vydoriath would be fine with it soon enough, R'vi turned his attention to his companions that were also dismounting not too far from. "What should we do first?" He looked around at the open space, noting some other riders were also there. Some played off in the distance, though he couldn't be sure what they were doing, but he did see a lot of snow being kicked up. Then there was the pond that was iced over with people gliding around on it.

While he waited for an answer, R'vi gave into his curiosity and crouched down to inspect the snow. They had had a little when he was in Telgar, but given the Weyr was a bit warmer, it never accumulated as much as this. He was also one of the younger riders so he wasn't allowed to go too far from the Weyr while tensions were still high between them and the Holders. Now, though, he was able to fully examine the white stuff and he poked it. Then he pressed his palm down on it, leaving behind a hand print. On impulse, he picked up a handful and marvelled at it when it compacted and formed a ball. This was so cool!

"Di! Look at this!" He stood and underhand tossed the snowball at Indivara so she could see his masterpiece.

Indivara knew how to pick her battles. Or, perhaps more specifically, she knew how to get Venseth to manipulate Veeth to get what she wanted. Indivara was known for being difficult, but that didn’t mean she didn’t want to go to the party R’nd’s sister was holding, or that she really wanted to deny R’vi’s invitation. Of course, if she had wanted to stay home, it wouldn’t have been hard to use V’ler as a means to avoid the situation – he hated the cold, and she wasn’t such a fan either, truth be told – and between the two of them they could have kicked R’vi out and remained rugged up at home. But she did want to go, and with a quick nudge to Venseth, the blue dragon had suggested to Veeth how much fun it would be and badda-bing, badda-boom, they were off! Indivara smirked to herself as she stroked Venseth’s hide, peering down on the property owned by R’nd’s family.

Venseth was amused by Indivara’s play; he’d known she wanted to go as soon as she’d gotten the invitation from R’nd, though she hadn’t done more than mention it in passing to V’ler one night when she was changing for bed. Her bemused tone at the time hadn’t given any indication of her desire to go, but Venseth wasn’t surprised by that; his little rider was remarkably good at hiding away what she really felt. Angling himself carefully, Venseth landed lightly in the snow not far from his blue brothers, lowering his nose so he could sniff at the interesting white fluff before sneezing. Indivara giggled gleefully as she slid from his neck, pulling her riding gloves on tighter and wriggling her fingers. She’d seen some snow – Telgar was hardly warm – but it looked like this area got so much more! Grinning, Indivara snugged her head down deeper into her scarf, feeling the coolness of the air nipping at her ears and nose.

“What?” Turning, Indivara caught the snowball that was tossed her way on pure instinct, blinking down at the little ball of white with a tilted head. “Huh,” she smiled, shifting it between her hands. Turning, she took a couple of dancing steps to V’ler, and held it up for him to examine. “Look!” As soon as his head was turned in her direction, Indivara shoved the snowball firmly in his face, grinding it over his nose and mouth. Laughing in wicked delight, Indivara stood up on her tip-toes to kiss V’ler briefly on the lips, then turned and darted away, grabbing R’vi’s hand and tugging insistently on his arm until he followed her lead.

Don’t you dare let them leave! She laughed at Venseth, who crooned in amusement as he trotted over towards the lake, inviting his brothers to join him as the humans did their human things. He was intent on watching the ones who were gliding so gracefully (and in some cases, without any grace at all) across the surface of the frozen water. He had never known humans could fly without dragon’s wings!

V’ler knew before Veeth said anything that they were all going. He knew as soon as his dragon heard about snow and what fun it would be that nothing would change his mind. He really wasn’t a fan of the idea but figured with enough layers and parking regularly by the fire pits, he should stay relatively warm and still seem like he was being social. Not that he cared if others thought he was or not but, like Indivara, he knew when to pick his battles and he didn’t want to have to put up with his ‘mate’ and his dragon harping on him for the next month because he didn’t want to frolic in cold, fluffy, white stuff. He was from a colder region in the North. He knew what it was and how uneventful it could be.

It was pretty though.

So with a sigh, he layered up, put on a scarf he had purchased at a gather just before the cold season started, and tucked the notebook Mulrissa had given him into his bag. With a final glance to his warm home, V’ler mounted up and followed his friends to the location R’nd and Ayyonth had shared with them previously.

Yep, snow was still pretty with the way it blanketed everything and made the world seem fresh and new. He also liked how it seemed to muffle the everyday noises that were so commonplace that they weren’t really noticed until gone. At least, it was quiet until they were close enough to hear other people laughing and hollering as they played.

With another sigh, V’ler dismounted, pulling his scarf down enough to be polite as he responded to a question tossed their way by some random person he assumed lived on the farm. When Indivara called for his attention, he turned around just in time to be greeted with a face full of snow. He was so excited she had already discovered one of the perks of snow and how well it smashed into someone else. He suppressed yet another sigh just in time to be given a kiss which actually earned Indivara a rare moment of surprise as he quirked a brow at her. Were they playing up their status today for the benefit of all to keep the rumours flowing?

It could be a farewell kiss, he decided, as he wiped snow from his face, and turned on his heel to mount back up and head home. Only, Veeth had other ideas, as V’ler watched his excitable dragon prancing around in the snow, stopping only to stick his nose in it and blow, causing it to puff up around him. Veeth was nearly shrieking in delight as he bounced away after Venseth to see what other people were up to and V’ler put a hand to his head, wondering not for the first time how they ended up together.

Giving in, V’ler pulled the scarf back up over his mouth and followed after Indivara and R’vi.

“Wow,” Indivara stood at the edge of the pond with her gloved hand still holding R’vi’s as she stared out at the people gliding across the ice with strange boots on. She tilted her head, wondering how they had managed to do that, and looked up to flash a smile at V’ler when he joined them. “What’re they doing?” She asked, completely naive to the activity or the word for it. She’d never so much as dreamed of something like gliding on the top of ice; not surprisingly, considered she’d never really seen ice until that moment. Definitely not in such a large amount! It wasn’t like Katila ever froze, and she much preferred not exploring Telgar when it was white. Besides, the Weyr Lake was too big to actually freeze… right?

“What do they have on their feet?” She asked, glancing at V’ler for the answer, eyebrows raised before she looked down at her own feet, which were warm and snug in her riding boots, which definitely didn’t look like what the folks on the lake were wearing. “Can we do that?” She asked, freeing her hand from R’vi’s to point out at the lake top and stare beseechingly up at V’ler. She was oblivious to how out of character she might seem to R’vi. V’ler didn’t call her names or tease her when she asked questions, so she’d taken to asking him more over the Turns, and certainly felt safe and comfortable enough doing so that she forgot about her other friend, with whom she was generally more comfortable pretending she knew everything.

… INDIVARA Venseth’s sudden screech was so loud, several Holdfolk fell over on the ice and the surrounding area, as the blue dragon went sliding across the lake, his eyes wide and whirling in a rainbow of shocked colours. Indivara stared, her jaw slack, as the blue dragon lost his footing and landed on his stomach, legs extended to each side as he swirled in a slow circle, wriggling and struggling to stand up. Indivara blinked, looking shocked.

“What in the world?!” She demanded, not sure whom she was making the demand of. “Venseth! What are you doing!?”

We were playing and then the snow stopped… and here I am. The blue dragon sighed, apologising as he knocked over a skater and sent them sprawling on the ice as he drifted past. My feet won’t work, he added, sounding embarrassed, as he continued to struggle to get his limbs under himself so that he could stand up. Help?

V’ler was trailing behind his excited friends, still wondering if he could sneak away without incurring the wrath of Indivara when she started pointing and asking questions. He realised in that moment that Indivara, and possibly even R’vi if he didn’t explore much, had never seen snow or ice before. He knew he had had that thought in the past but it didn’t truly sink in until that very moment when Indivara turned wide eyes his way and needed to know what was going on. He tried to reply but got a mouthful of warm scarf and V’ler tugged it back down again, miserable that he couldn’t stay bundled up entirely.

“They have blades on their feet to make skates. Makes it easier to glide on the ice and it’s called skating,” V’ler replied as he watched the skaters for a moment before turning back to Indivara, ready to answer her question about if they could do it or not. That was sort of trick question. They could definitely get some skates and try skating but it’d likely end with a lot of bruises.

However, he didn’t get a chance to explain any of that thanks to a large blue dragon suddenly trying his own luck on the slick surface. The screech for Indivara actually startled V’ler as well and he watched wide-eyed and slack-jawed as Venseth did his best to regain his footing. Then he remembered he was bonded to an excitable blue dragon and quickly glanced around for Veeth, finding him off to one side of the pond pacing back and forth and making a noise V’ler could only call a squeak of panic.

“Veeth, he’s okay. It’s just very slippery, like those smooth flat rocks in the rain but a bit worse,” V’ler tried to explain to Veeth in order to get him to calm down. His panicking likely didn’t help Venseth any either and if they could get one calmed down, the other would as well. Venseth would likely have to keep slipping and sliding his way to the edge at this point. No way was he going to suggest trying to go between from the ground. That was dangerous for even an older pair and V’ler had a slight fear of betweening thanks to losing a classmate when they first learned how to do the damn thing. He didn’t want to lose Venseth or risk Indivara dying or ending up like Jajojin and the other dragonless.

Veeth soon stopped pacing and squeaking after a little more coaxing and assurance everything was okay. Now they just had to get a dragon off the ice that was thankfully rather thick.

R’vi was having a great time and he had hardly even done anything himself! It was fun walking through the snow and fun watching people skate. It was all so new and almost overwhelming because he didn’t know what he wanted to do first. He saw some people piling large snowballs on top of the other making a statue of some sort and others were making a little house out of snow. Both seemed like fun and so did the skating! He was just as excited as Indivara about finding out if they could do it that he only sort of registered that she was openly asking questions and didn’t seem to mind letting it be known that she didn’t know something. Indivara always had to be right and have all the answers and if anyone disagreed with her, it resulted with a kick to the shin or a punch to whatever body part she could reach at the time.

He couldn’t think on that too much, though, thanks to Venseth’s glorious entrance. He had been watching the skaters when it happened, though he missed the actual moment of dragon meeting ice but he did see the dragon before his friends did so he wasn’t as shocked as them when Venseth called out. It was still a shock, but he had already gotten over it and was looking for Vydoriath, making sure his dragon wasn’t crashing snow homes or something as equally insane. I am doing no such thing. Though I was almost out there with Venseth, Vydoriath sounded both insulted at the idea of ruining something and upset that he had abandoned his friend to his slippery fate.

It turned out Vydoriath was far enough behind Venseth as the three blues frolicked and chased each other in the snow that he was able to stop when Venseth went sprawling and sliding. R’vi didn’t know whether to laugh or be relieved. It would have been hilarious to see Vydoriath out there as well but it was probably for the best that only one dragon had crashed the fun since they only had to get one dragon back on land.

“Soooo… how do we fix this? Personally I say we feign innocence and leave Indivara to deal with it all,” he said to V’ler, not at all meaning it and the grin on his face said as much. He wouldn’t leave Indivara to clean up a mess no matter how serious. It was just the way of friends and ‘brats that grew up together. They were all in it together and were either punished together or got out of it together.

“Rope and pull him in while others push him?” R’vi tried to come up with ideas while V’ler worked at calming Veeth down. Vydoriath moved around the pond to sit with the smaller blue dragon as well to help settle him down. “Or, um… he’ll just have to try baby stepping his way to the nearest edge if he can’t get his footing long enough to wing it on out of there.” He had no idea what was best as he watched Venseth continue to lay flat on the ice, looking rather pitiful. A glance at V’ler told R’vi that the older bluerider had no idea how to fix this either. What good was having friends that seemed to know everything if they actually didn’t!

Indivara was torn between scowling at R’vi for his very not-funny comment about leaving her to deal with her stupid dragon by herself, and hiding behind V’ler because people were staring and she really didn’t want to be associated with the dragon sliding on ice. It was so going to be yet another thing she’d never live down! Indivara sighed, at least thus far no one had been injured and there was nothing gross to stain her brain with. She cringed and did her best to erase the thought of that hatching. Shaking her head, Indivara decided to punch R’vi in the side, delayed as it was, to help clear her thoughts.

Frowning, Indivara gave R’vi a dirty look. “Sure. You try and push while you’re on what appears to be really fucking slippery!” She gestured towards Venseth, who was still struggling to get his feet under him, and the skaters that were half circling the dragon as they watched with a kind of amused fascination. “Clearly there is nothing to grip.” Her tone implied R’vi’s stupidity, and she crossed her arms irritably lest she hit him again.

Pinching the bridge of her nose for a moment, thinking, Indivara reached out, grabbed both men by the wrists and dragged them towards the edge of the lake that Venseth seemed to be sliding toward. While she was not entirely sure what her plan of action was going to be, she was sure of one thing: that she was not going to be rescuing her stupid dragon by herself. I resent that, I am not stupid, Missy. Venseth put in, twisting to look over his shoulder towards where Indivara and her fellow blueriders were now standing. He slowly spun around to face them and he set his chin down on the ice, sighing in resignation – at least his spinning was slowing to a halt. Though this is all rather embarrassing.

“Embarrassing, stupid; same difference,” Indivara dismissed her dragon’s comment with an eye roll. She had also noticed that her dragon had stopped moving – in a circle or otherwise. Indivara frowned, eyeing the distance her dragon was from her current position. Cautiously, she moved towards the edge of the lake until she found where land turned to ice. Venseth was still a good fifteen feet from the edge of the lake. “You’re lucky I don’t disown you,” she told her dragon, hands on her hips as she stared at him. “You are so embarrassing.”

Venseth snorted. I am not stupid! The blue dragon lifted his head off the snow and would have pouted, if dragons were capable of pouting. Can we please get me off this ice, and then bicker? He asked, and Indivara frowned at him, before rolling her eyes.

“Fine. How do we get the stupid –” (Venseth hissed at her) – “dragon off the ice?”

Since Vydoriath was looking after Veeth, V’ler realised he was now stuck with the program of Venseth on the ice. He turned back to his friends in time to see R’vi clutching his side in pain, likely from being punched for his usual humorous take on the situation. Given he was only one of the three that had winter experience, V’ler knew he was going to be looked to for a solution and he really didn’t have one. Some of the other older riders frolicking around in the snow might have ideas and may have even had to deal with such a situation long ago in the colder regions pre-plague. Still, he didn’t want to have to ask and then be part of the gossiping and jokes later on or have to be indebted to anyone.

Glancing around for an idea, V’ler found a shovel and a pile of snow that likely came off of the ice after the last heavy snowfall. Well, it was time to put it back on. Without a word, he went over, grabbed the shovel, scooped up a load of snow, and walked back to the edge of the pond where he dumped the snow. Then the shovel was held out to Indivara. “If you put enough snow on the ice, it’ll form a somewhat helpful path. He should get enough traction to stand at least.” Maybe. It wouldn’t hurt.

Indivara watched V’ler, her hands on her hips as she waited for him to come up with some way to save her dragon from his slippery prison. She didn’t consider having Venseth travel between to get into the sky; she knew some riders took risks when it came to traveling between, but for all her rash behaviour, Indivara and Venseth had never taken short cuts when it came to their lives and she wasn’t about to start now. Worse case, she supposed someone could bring him meat and he’d have to spend the winter on the ice… I most certainly will not!Indivara’s lips twitched.

Indivara’s eyebrows furrowed when V’ler walked away, but the expression of irritation morphed into one of curiosity when he came back with a shovel and scooped up some snow. She considered what he was doing, before realising he was holding the tool out to her. Indivara gave V’ler a flat look of digest, before taking it. With a glance around, she spotted more. “There are some more over there,” she said firmly, pointing towards the other shoves she’d seen with an expectant look at both V’ler and R’vi. Apparently, someone had been using them in the area, probably preparing for all the guests.

Taking the shovel she’d been given, Indivara scooped up a load of snow and walked out to the edge and began to slowly build up a path to her dragon; it would have been easy if she didn’t have to make it wide enough for his fat width. Venseth grumbled, but otherwise watched the growth of the path coming towards him with eagerness. It didn’t take long for the three of them to construct a path of snow wide enough for Venseth, and though Indivara kept her mouth shut, one of their number was as good as useless… But at least he wasn’t just standing there watching, even if he spent more time glaring at the snow than shovelling it.

Rather than have Venseth send snow in every direction trying to scramble onto it, Indivara piled some around his feet, and watched patiently as he struggled to stand, finally finding his feet. With his wings half spread to balance himself, Venseth tiptoed along the path that had been created, neither he nor Indivara trusting the strength of the ice for the large blue to press down on it with his back-feet before take-off.

FREEDOM! The blue dragon crowed in delight, dancing onto the shore, grinning with an open maw as he turned around to face his rider and her assistants. Venseth gave a slightly mocking bow. Thanks! With a bouncing, hopping step, Venseth re-joined Veeth and Vydoriath, nuzzling the elder blue reassuringly.

Dusting her hands off, Indivara tossed the shovel to one side and raised her eyebrows at her friends. “Not what I anticipated this afternoon consisting of.”

Like usual, R’vi was dragged along on one of Indivara’s adventures.

Well, that wasn’t entirely true. She was usually getting caught up in one of his plans with his brother just as much as they were tagging along on one of her grand ideas. This time, though, the idea wasn’t nearly as fun as they usually were. He reluctantly grabbed one of the extra shovels that had probably been used to remove all the snow they were about to put back on and started digging in. With each scoop, he was already starting to hate snow and ice and he really hadn’t even played in it yet!

It might not have sucked quite as much if V’ler had put a bit more effort into actually helping instead of just being the idea man that apparently had pussy wrists or something that stopped him from doing actual work. He waited until Venseth was off the ice before saying anything, though. He wanted to make sure the big blue was safe and grinned when he heard the cry of freedom before watching the three blues run off together again.

Sticking the end of his shovel into the snow, R’vi leaned on the handle for a moment to rest. He was pretty sure this counted as Indivara owing him later on!

“So, uh, V’ler… break your wrist or something? I couldn’t help but notice your token effort of helping,” R’vi wasn’t really mad, just curious as to why he seemed less enthused to help free the dragon when dragons seemed to flock to him so much. Straightening up, R’vi stretched, feeling his back already protesting all the shovelling. He then draped an arm around Indivara and rested his chin on her shoulder. “Having second thoughts about your mate yet, Di?” He was teasing, of course, knowing she wasn’t into him and he had finally gotten over that crush a while ago when he realised it wasn’t going anywhere.

V’ler glanced at R’vi from where he had been watching the dragons go back to frolicking in the snow. He was glad they were having fun at least. He was still cold and now miserable from being a nice guy and helping with the rescue mission. R’vi’s question, as innocent as he knew it was since it came from one of the twins, still irritated him and he knew Indivara wanted to know as well, despite the dirty looks she was alternating between him and R’vi.

“I grew up on a farm and hated it. I was offered the chance to be a Harper and I took it to get away from things like this,” V’ler stated in a matter of fact tone before walking away to return his shovel from where he found it. He could be a dick but he wasn’t about to leave a shovel lying in the snow for someone to trip over or smack their face on. As he returned, V’ler’s lips quirked into an amused smirk as he stopped to lean on Indivara’s other shoulder. “And I did break my wrist, which Indivara will likely enjoy telling you all about and how I was afraid I wouldn’t write or play guitar again.”

He gave a rare kiss to Indivara’s cheek as he walked away again to go watch their dragons play again. Veeth seemed to be over the trauma of Venseth being stranded which eased some of V’ler’s worry for his sensitive dragon.

Indivara’s lips twitched at R’vi’s question of V’ler, and she turned an amused gaze upon her ‘mate’, rather eagerly looking forward to what his answer would be to that interesting question. Her amusement about V’ler’s answer and R’vi’s face was cut short when she realised both men were using her as a leaning post, and she scowled, shooting the look of irritation first at R’vi – which neatly coincided with his question. She snorted, and would have responded, but was too surprised by V’ler kissing her cheek and striding off.

She watched him go, eyes slightly wide, and completely unaware of the affection and slightly wistful smile on her lips. Making a slightly amused ‘heh’ sound, Indivara lifted an eyebrow and glanced up at R’vi. “Not usually,” she teased, answering the question that had provoked the unusually possessive response from V’ler. He so rarely played up their ‘mated’ status that she was more than a little surprised by the public display, especially since it followed up R’vi’s teasing! As a rule, Indivara was the one bestowing playful kisses or holding hands and making a show. Not that she was complaining; she was just surprised!

“And he did break his wrist,” she laughed, looping her arm through R’vi’s and leading him towards where V’ler was standing. “His left wrist,” she added, emphasising the side just enough to indicate that it was V’ler’s dominant hand. “He was an absolute baby about it, too. Mildly understandable, considering how absolutely useless he is with his right hand, though,” she laughed, wriggling her eyebrows up at R’vi to imply all kinds of things V’ler was useless at with his right hand. While R’vi knew Indivara and V’ler had not been sexual partners before Venseth started chasing, the dragon’s discovery of his own needs likely implied that they were now, and her teasing probably added to it. Frankly, that was her intention at any rate.

“You’d still write,” Indivara added as they reached V’ler’s side. She reached out and grabbed his gloved hand, giving it a light squeeze. “Even if it meant stealing some poor, innocent apprentice, and glaring down at the poor boy for his terrible penmanship, which was the new representation of all that musical mayhem that goes on inside your head.” Taking her arm back from R’vi for a moment, she poked V’ler in the temple with a gloved pointer finger, and laughed.

“I’d call that provoking a success. I bet even you didn’t know he’d almost been a farmer,” R’vi laughed as he was dragged away after V’ler. He didn’t really feel bad about his question, even though he didn’t know the man had actually broken his wrist in recent history. V’ler never seemed to talk about himself and to get that much out of him was pretty impressive. Besides, he didn’t look offended by it and he likely knew he was being lazy in helping and likely didn’t even care. It was kind of an endearing trait of his and R’vi liked to think he was the same way in not caring what others thought about him, but he was definitely more charming and approachable than V’ler!

As they stood practically huddled together for warmth, watching their dragons not seem to mind the cold while prancing around and having a grand old time, R’vi felt they needed to do something to keep warm. His theory was based off the fact that too much moving about on a hot Katila day left him sweating and lethargic so moving about in the cold should warm him up to something more comfortable. “What should we do first? I’m going to assume V’ler wants to drink something hot while sitting next to a fire but I kinda wanna try out that… did you call it skating? I hope to have more grace than Venseth did!”

V’ler arched a brow at Indivara’s comment and then broke out into a smirk with a light snort. He definitely would make someone else write down his musings if he had to and would likely complain the entire time that said person was too slow at writing or had horrible penmanship. Even his rough notes and quick scribbles of an idea were still rather neat and definitely more legible than a lot of people he knew or observed.

At R’vi’s comment about wanting to give skating a whirl, V’ler glanced around looking for skates to use. In truth, he had never skated either. He’d have multiple chances when he was a Journeyman and lived in the colder regions but it never struck him as something he wanted to try. He was content to sit on the sidelines and watch others make fools of themselves. He hoped that would be the case this time as well. He watched a couple of people nearly tumble their way off the ice, laughing, and teasing each other as they went to a log to sit down and take off the blades strapped to their boots. V’ler made his way over to them, recognizing one of them as a greenrider that was a friend of R’nd’s – but wasn’t everyone? R’nd seemed to collect people for friends – and inquired about them.

A few minutes later and V’ler returned with two sets of skates. “It seems R’nd’s sister was nice enough to have pairs available to use. You two can take these,” he was definitely fine with watching them and maybe jotting down notes as to their first experiences with snow and ice. If nothing else, he was certain he’d find things to tease Indivara about later on.

Indivara smiled to herself but made no comment in reply to R’vi’s quip about ‘provoking a success’, not wanting to share the fact that V’ler had told her some time ago that he’d once been a farmer. Of course, that memory was blurred around the edges with all the horrors of that particular Hatching, but Indivara remembered warmly being curled up with V’ler as he tried to help her forget about those particular horrors by telling her the story of his life before arriving in Katila. She didn’t want to share that with R’vi, mostly for her own selfish reasons and very little because she didn’t want to spoil his amusement at getting the information out of their close-mouthed friend.

I was very graceful, all things considered, Venseth put in, speaking broadly to the whole group and his own blue companions. Indivara snorted in amusement and shook her head slightly. Grace wasn’t the term she would be inclined to use to describe the blue dragon sliding across the ice, but whatever helped him sleep tonight! She was distracted by her dragon, but her attention returned to V’ler as he dropped her hand and suddenly meandered off. Indivara scowled after him, having been subtly using him as a full-body heater by standing closer to him than she needed to, and carefully positioned to minimise the light breeze.

One delicate eyebrow arched upwards when V’ler returned to them, skates in hand. Indivara dropped her gaze to the ones he was holding out to her, and she blinked at them, before lifting her head to stare at her ‘mate’ with a flat look. “I could fit both of my feet on one of those.” She chided, only slightly exaggerating; while they were definitely too big for her, they weren’t quite that much too big. “You wear those,” she added, smirking mischievously, clearly aware that V’ler had been attempting to get out of the activity. It was such a V’ler thing to do!

Looking around, it didn’t take Indivara long to spot some ‘brats not far away, and she made a beeline for them. They didn’t really look like they were finished skating – more having a break and laughing together – but Indivara wasn’t denied when she demanded a pair of the strange skating contraptions, and she made her way back to the guys with a smug expression and held them up. She smirked at V’ler and raised her eyebrows at him again. “If you keep standing there gaping, you’ll turn into one of those ice-man-things.” She told him, ignoring the fact that he wasn’t gaping and unaware that she used the wrong term for ‘snowmen’. Flopping onto the bench, Indivara set about figuring out how to get the strange boot contraption to stick to her riding boots.

V’ler gave Indivara a flat look when she made it so he was stuck skating as well. He really didn’t want to and had visions of losing his balance – likely due to one of his companions falling and taking him with them – and breaking a bone again. That hadn’t been a pleasant experience and it wasn’t something he ever wanted to go through again. Although Veeth not chasing anyone during that time was rather nice, it wasn’t motivation enough to break something.

Naturally he gave in, not finding it worth his energy to argue or simply say he had no desire to skate. He waved Indivara’s hands away after watching her attempt to lace the skate to her boot several times. He knelt before her and did one foot and then the other for her. A glance to R’vi showed the other man was contemplating bolting as well, likely thanks to the wonderful display Venseth had given about what ice was like. V’ler decided if he was stuck, so was R’vi and ordered his fellow bluerider to sit down so he could help lace him up as well.

Once they were both sorted out, V’ler put on his own skates and stood to join the others. “The hardest part, other than getting up off the ice when you fall as Venseth showed, is actually getting on the ice.” V’ler didn’t want to be the first to go but knew he’d be made to anyway since he was apparently the master of winter or something. Carefully he waddled his way to the edge and side stepped onto the ice with a few small baby steps. He moved a few feet away so if the other two fell, they wouldn’t take him with them. Once they were all settled and safely standing still, he’d give a brief lesson of what he remembered for how to move on the blades.
