“Hey,” Indivara ran her hand along the back of V’ler’s shoulders and up his neck, brushing her fingers through his hair and peering over his shoulder with very little interest at whatever it was he was working on. “I’m going down to Telgar, do you want anything?” An idle shrug was met with a poke to the cheek, which resulted in an order of parchment and ink. Whether he actually needed them, or was just doing as he was told, was irrelevant to Indivara as she kissed him on the temple and made her way to the dragons. In all honesty, she would probably forget about both the parchment and the ink.

Greeting Veeth as she passed him, Indivara dragged Venseth’s riding straps out of the storage room and set about gearing her dragon up, pulling on her helmet and gloves when she was done and scrambling aboard. The pair agreed to fly straight; it was a gorgeous day, Indivara was in no hurry, and she was starting to think her blue was being influenced by V’ler’s fear of between. The dragon had been getting more and more reluctant to make jumps over the past Turn or so, if he could get away with flying straight.

Indivara watched as Queenie and Saph swirled around playfully as Venseth mostly glided the distance to the Hold, the dragon being as lazy as he could get away with being, much to Indivara’s amusement; he was going to get fat doing so little work. That, of course, had Venseth defending himself and his fitness levels vehemently as they finally approached for a landing not far outside the main portion of Telgar, so Indivara could walk into the centre of the city without dying because she was hardly that fit herself. Rolling her eyes as Queenie landed lightly on her shoulder, Indivara gave Venseth a pat as the blue lumbered off to find a nice place to sun, grumbling about her leaving him in his straps while he got dumped with helmets and gloves. Indivara ignored him regally.

Wandering into the main business district with mild interest, Indivara looked around curiously. It was not a Gather Day, but that did not stop the major location of the Hold from bustling with people and activities. She paused at a puppet show, watching as dragonriders appeared in the sky to proclaim they were still alive, snorting with amusement at the antics of the characters. Shaking her head, she slipped away before someone saw her and realised she was a ‘rider. She was not sure how that would affect the show, and wasn’t interested in causing a spectacle either way.

No matter how many times Indivara visited the Hold, the population was so large that there was always an abundance of people who had never seen her before, and seemed to feel it was important to stare at her as she passed. Mostly, this was because of her scars, she had no doubt, but she was also aware that she had put on her knots that morning which indicated her rank as bluerider, and weyrlingmaster assistant. She wasn’t sure how well versed the Hold population was on Dragonrider knots, but she knew they knew two things – a, she was a woman and b, she was bonded to a blue dragon. Which was a man’s dragon. Despite – or perhaps because of – this, Indivara walked with her chin held high, and her eyes flashing.

For a woman who did not make five feet, she was very successful at looking intimidating, between the scars and the scowl.

Indivara’s scowl smoothed out as she made her way down a familiar street and finally to a familiar store. It was large, especially by the standard of other stores around them, but it was her favourite because of that. Pushing the door open, Indivara stepped into the beautiful and aromatic store. Filled with fresh cut flowers in the front, dried flowers in the middle, and powders and oils in the back, Indivara was overwhelmed by the scents that swirled around. She grinned, and Saph chittered happily from wher he was flying around her head, Queenie still perched primly on Indivara’s shoulder.

“I’m back!” She sung, ignoring the other patrons as she waved to the shop owners – an elderly man and woman, who by the looks of them had been alive for a really, really long time – and their young relative. Indivara thought he was a great-great-grandson or something similar. She seriously couldn’t understand how the couple had lived as long as they had with no dragons, let along functioned and run the shop! Kissing both elderly owners on the cheek, and flashing a smile at the young man, Indivara quizzed them about what was new, and the local gossip, before making her way to their suggested favourites.

The young woman picked up some scented oils for her baths, as well as some soap-sand that had been mixed with flower petals and oils, and made the skin smell pretty after using it. She hadn’t heard of that one before, apparently it was new, but it smelled gorgeous and it sounded fun. She smirked to herself as she picked up a particularly floral scented one, and decided that could be V’ler’s. If nothing else, she and Veeth would get a kick out of him smelling like roses! (Certainly, it would be a nice change from lavender. Where did he even get that from?? - that was rhetorical. She'd spent enough time around B'jin to be well aware of his influence there.)

Indivara eyed some of the bubble liquid, knowing Rhaedalyn had raved about the stuff last time she had been guilt tripped into going to see Varlea. Shrugging one shoulder, she picked up some of that too, choosing the one that was a combination of vanilla and citrus. It smelled glorious, definitely edible. I’m not going to be able to breathe around you, if you use all that stuff, Venseth quipped, pleased he was far enough away that he’d only have to smell whatever Indivara bought, which was not likely to be over powering to a dragon’s nostrils. While she had been before (frequently!), she had never left with more than a token flower and a head full of gossip. Venseth was fairly sure she was embarrassed by being girly.

He was also fairly sure that’s why she was there, though he bit back his quip about being girly for V’ler; he liked the strange relationship that was developing between his rider and Veeth’s, and wasn’t interested in spoiling it. Not that he wouldn’t pick on her ruthlessly when they were comfortably settled, of course. In the meantime, he would wait until Indivara didn’t flush girlishly when her thoughts drifted.

You have company, Venseth interrupted Indivara’s game of sniffing the contents of various bottles and containers, causing the girl to blink and look up, startled, to see who her dragon was referencing…I

R’nd loved shopping.

What wasn’t to love? He got to browse wonderful creations, useful items, potential gifts, and clothes. The clothes was something he definitely loved a bit more than the other things, though gifts was a very close second. He missed having the latest style when he lived in exile and then in Katila. Once upon a time, he used to ask those who were allowed North to steal needed supplies or people, to grab him a new shirt or take notes on the latest style so someone like Kerrin could recreate it for him. Now that he had easy access to all of those luxuries again, R’nd was now of two minds. One was not to take for granted things that made life easier or even just what he already had. The other was to enjoy the chances he had to go to the shops and buy what was needed and maybe even just desired.

He knew they kind of contradicted each other but Ayyonth was fond of pointing out that R’nd was full of contradictions and the bluerider was okay with that.

Something else he liked about shopping was the socialising. It was something he had already spent a vast majority of the day doing. It was his free day and R’nd had spent part of the morning mingling with some of the folk working in the lower caverns and then hopped down to Telgar Hold to see what was new there. A delightful lunch was spent at the Whetstone Tavern where he got quite a bit of gossip, including that which involved the youngest son of the Lord of High Reaches moving to Fort Hold to wed a lady he knew nothing about. That gave R’nd pause and he made a mental note to thank Gamalieth for Searching him so long ago. He didn’t know what he’d do if he had ended up staying in the family sea hold, being married off to the family that had the highest offer. He barely liked the idea that it had happened to Eridella, though she seemed happy enough.

After lunch, he wandered the streets, chatting with nearly everyone he came across. He couldn’t help it! R’nd loved people and found everyone had an interesting story if you simply gave them time to tell it. Everyone fascinated him, even those he wasn’t fond of still had a story and it wouldn’t have surprised him if some of those stories made him at least understand them a bit more. He was willing to bet D’hys, for example, had a great story as to what caused him to become the cold-hearted bastard that he was today.

By the time he made it to one of the last stops of his tour of the market area, R’nd’s satchel was bulging. He had picked up the dress tunic he had commissioned a couple of weeks earlier that was in a gorgeous shade of blue. He couldn’t wait to show it to B’jin and to find an excuse to wear it. He also had some sweet treats, two small pots of paint for B’jin in colours he thought the greenrider would like to experiment painting in, and a bracelet that a young lady had hand weaved in shades of blue and grey that he couldn’t resist—though that was already tied onto his wrist and not in the bag.

He stepped inside the rather large shop, greeting the owners warmly and chatting with them for several minutes to catch up with them. When someone else came up to pay, R’nd excused himself and started meandering around, looking for certain items and others that might jump out at him. By the time he heard a greeting in a familiar voice, R’nd had a borrowed basket full of goods. There was a fresh flower for one of the kitchen workers he heard was sick and wanted to wish her well with a special little treat. He had a bottle of pure lavender oil, which B’jin had explained some time ago was easily diluted into a larger batch that was appropriate for Larrikith’s oil and would last several uses. He also found some bubble bath in a scent he thought his sister would like. The trend hadn’t quite reached her area of Benden and she seemed fascinated with the idea when R’nd mentioned it to her the last time they got together so he was treating her to a gift.

R’nd silently watched Indivara move around the shop, seemingly lost in her own world as she sniffed at vials and grabbed what seemed to appeal to her while he continued his own loop around the store. Finally, curiosity got the best of him and R’nd headed over to his young blueriding friend. It was a store he wouldn’t have pegged her being interested in, or at least not one she would linger in for so long, but Indivara had a lot of interesting quirks and some seemed to show themselves more than others lately.

Indivara looked up just as he approached, leaving R’nd to wonder if she wasn’t quite as lost in her own world as he thought she was, or if he was ratted out by an observant dragon. He smiled and pointed at the bottle in her hand. “That one is too sweet of a floral scent. It will give you a headache within an hour of using it.” He didn’t mind it in small doses but found most people were heavy-handed with it and those around them were the ones to suffer.

An eyebrow arched coyly as Indivara took in the sight of R’nd standing before her, his own basket of goodies in the crook of one elbow. Placing the item he had recommended not getting back on the shelf with all the airs of being unimpressed with it herself, Indivara turned to face her friend, the other eyebrow raising to join its partner. “And how would you know?” She asked, a slow smirk winding its way over her lips. “All you two ever reek of is lavender.” It wasn’t that Indivara disliked the scent, she did actually enjoy it, but there was only so much lavender a girl could take before it was just too much, and between B’jin, R’nd, V’ler and all three of their dragons, Indivara was quite heartily sick of the scent.

Indivara shifted close to R’nd, peering shamelessly into his basked and plucking up the vial of pure lavender oil, she gave it a little shake, as if to point out his very living up to her example, and she tossed it gently back in the basket. “Really? It’s been like twenty Turns. Aren’t you sick of that smell yet?” Considering R’nd was barely into his thirties, it was a heavy exaggeration, but Indivara was satisfied with it. Close enough to the truth to make him twitch, but exaggerated enough to also make him twitch. Perfect.

“Doesn’t B’jin have his own garden of lavender plants, anyway?” She asked, frowning slightly. How much lavender did that greenrider need? She was sure he had a garden of the bushes last time she was in their weyr for lessons, but she honestly had no idea when they flowered or such. Shaking her head, she resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she peered back into R’nd’s basket and picked up the flower. “Is this for B’jin-jin too, or a secret lover?” She grinned, mischievously, and wiggled the flower as she danced back a couple of paces playfully, so he couldn’t snatch it back.

“If I reek of lavender, there are some very fun reasons as to why,” R’nd replied with a raised eyebrow to match that of Indivara’s before he leaned down to whisper, “which I believe you’re discovering for yourself lately.” He straightened and chuckled as she made her way for his basket, likely doing her best to pretend he hadn’t just implied anything out of the ordinary, though R’nd knew some changes had been made in his young friend’s life.

His chuckle turned into a slight cough as Indivara found her revenge in the bottle of lavender oil. It most certainly hadn’t been twenty years! You know, T’ryn will be twenty soon, Ayyonth piped in, far too chipper, as he always was when R’nd started thinking about years, ages, and how long something had been happening. He isn’t! He’ll be seventeen soon. Stop making everyone older than they are. He really didn’t want to think about his eldest son’s age nor did he want to make the connection that his youngest son’s age matched how long he had been in a happy relationship with B’jin.

“And no. I’m not sick of the scent. It’s very much a part of B’jin and reminds me of certain moments. And yes, he does have his own garden but they aren’t in bloom year round. I was considering getting some more seeds so he could add to it though, to help keep the supply up.” R’nd’s mini meltdown had almost made him miss Indivara’s continued razzing on lavender and B’jin. Ayyonth typically didn’t care if his oil was scented or not and often ended up smelling of lavender because B’jin got carried away with making the scented oil. As for R’nd, he had his preferred scent he liked to use on occasion but Indivara didn’t spend near enough time with him to pick it out, especially he had just been rolling around with the greenrider.

With a laugh and a small shake of his head in the negative, R’nd watched his flower dance back several feet as Indivara continued picking on him. “Neither. Someone in the kitchens is under the weather and I wanted to brighten her day with a gift.” R’nd enjoyed spoiling other people, as his basket and a vast portion of the contents of his satchel pointed out. He had some treats for himself, but he found joy in watching the faces of other people brighten when they realised they received a gift.

A flurry of blue wings caught his attention as someone leaving the shop opened the door in time for Rell to fly in. He had left his firelizard several doors down when the adorable young lady kept sharing her meal with him. Rell wasn’t the most social of firelizards, but when food was involved, he brought out the charm. “I’m assuming she ran out of food if you’re back already,” R’nd greeted his small friend as Rell landed on his right shoulder, tail curling lightly around R’nd’s neck, and watched Queenie with a lot of side glances.

A quick pat of reassurance was given to Rell and then R’nd was reaching over Indivara’s head to grab several bottles off a shelf. One was nice to add to tea to keep his immune system in top shape, one was what he liked to wear, and the other two were nice to have on hand for their scents and what they did.

“What brings you here? Looking for something with V’ler in mind?” R’nd casually mentioned their fellow bluerider, wanting to see how Indivara handled it. He also didn’t make a move to take his flower back, knowing the woman would give it back soon enough and he wasn’t in a hurry to rush out the door.

Indivara laughed, shaking her head as R’nd went on a tangent about lavender oil and all the apparently good things the scent meant to him. She rolled her eyes dramatically at his sentimentality, though she flashed a teasing grin at him. More laughter fell from her lips as R’nd was quick to throw out her idea that the flower was for a secret lover. “You’re no fun,” she teased, brushing the flower’s petals across her nose playfully, enjoying the scent of it. She’d give R’nd that much, at any rate – he could pick out a nice flower! She twirled it between her fingers, watching the way it blurred into itself at the motion.

The flurry of blue caught her attention from the flower, and Indivara looked up curiously as Rell came floating in. A calming hand was raised to pet Queenie as the gold firelizard screwed her nose up at R’nd’s blue, and the little queen snorted. Indivara hushed the creature, amused as much by Rell’s eyeing off Queenie as Queenie’s glaring at the blue. Stupid creatures, firelizards. Frowning suddenly, she peered around to find Saph, spotting the little blue on top of a nearby shelf, curled up on a pile of dried … lavender. Indivara sighed dramatically and shook her head at him. Really? She ignored the way Venseth laughed in amusement.

Indivara’s attention returned to R’nd as he leaned over her to get something off the shelf, and she had to resist the strong urge to give him a poke in the ribs, knowing that most people found that to be a ticklish spot, if not a spot that surprised them when it was attacked.

Speaking of surprise attacks!

“Something like that,” Indivara murmured, flushing deeply and dropping her gaze to the vicinity of R’nd’s chest rather than meeting his eyes. Despite the way she was avoiding his gaze there was nothing angry or embarrassed about her; probably it was more accurate to say she was vibrating with warm delight as she twirled the flower before putting it gently back in his basket, none the worse for wear from its adventure. She glanced up, to see what kind of expression R’nd was wearing, before turning her attention to her basket. “I got this one,” she pushed aside a couple of items to pull out the packet of rose scented soap-sand, the quirk of her smirk indicating it wasn’t intended to be an actual gift. She still thought the idea of V’ler smelling of roses was hilarious (and maybe more than a little delicious).

How exactly she was going to get him to use it, was the question she hadn’t examined too closely yet and she didn’t in that moment, either, as she handed the packet to R’nd and went back to fossicking through her basket. “And I got this one, for Veeth’s oil. So he doesn’t stink like you and B’jin.” She threw R’nd a dirty look, like it was all his fault Veeth was so damned adorable and wanted to smell pretty like Larrikith. She picked up a vial of pure oil, this one a mixture of a several essential oils, which included lavender, but had a few others that mixed well, to create a unique scent that wasn’t particularly girly, but was still pretty and she thought the blue might like.

Handing that to R’nd to look at, too, Indivara lifted blue eyes to meet R’nd’s challengingly, not quite sure why she was on the defensive but prepared none the less to be laughed at or mocked... and bestow appropriate punishment before fleeing, of course.

The expression Indivara saw was one of consideration. R’nd had noticed some changes in the woman over the last several weeks and while some were subtle and easily over looked, others were bordering on uncharacteristic for the fiery spirit she possessed. He knew her rather well, considered her as a little sister even, but he also enjoyed people-watching and R’nd was rather confident in his assessment, especially when he saw how Indivara flushed at the simple gesture of buying a gift for V’ler.

He’d bring that up in a bit, though, as some soap-sand was thrust into his hands and he sniffed it, enjoying the scent of rose, which the label clearly stated but R’nd liked to see for himself how true each scent was. He nodded and grinned at the idea of V’ler using the item without it being the only option available to him. Indivara would likely just dump it on his head in a shared bath when the man wasn’t looking and that thought made him smile all the more.

He traded the soap-sand for the oil and opened it without reading the label. Sometimes he liked to see if he could figure out all the ingredients before checking. It was spicy, as if someone was baking. He caught a whiff of cinnamon and possibly clove. Checking the label and R’nd was proud to see he caught two of the three spices, having missed nutmeg. “You have a knack for this, Indivara. I think Veeth will love it.” He smiled genuinely down at the girl and placed the bottle back in her basket. He could definitely see the young blue enjoying the new oil that still had a touch of Larrikith in it but was now his own fun scent.

“This,” R’nd pulled out one of the bottles he had just collected and popped the lid so he could hold it out for Indivara to sniff, “is what I like to smell like when I haven’t been rolled through lavender.” He spared Indivara the details but smiled to himself at the memory of a Flight not too long ago that happened while B’jin had been oiling his troublemaking dragon. It had ended with both of them and their linens covered in the scented oil and R’nd was convinced their bedroom and his body carried hints of lavender for at least a week.

As he capped the bottle and put it back in his basket when Indivara was done with it, R’nd casually mentioned, “it looks good on you, by the way,” purposely not mentioning what it was he was referring to.

“Thank you!” Indivara was delighted by the praise, not having expected it. She wouldn’t have put much stock on R’nd disagreeing with her choices, because she was confident in what she’d chosen, but having him approve the scent for Veeth’s oil was a bonus! Smiling happily, Indivara accepted both items back and leaned forward slightly to sniff at the bottle R’nd offered to her, her eyebrows furrowing as she considered the scent. Lifting an eyebrow, Indivara smirked playfully. “Definitely not lavender,” she teased, leaning back again, amused by the expression on R’nd’s face as he clearly lost himself to a train of thought she was not privy to.

She wasn’t sure she wanted to be, truthfully.

His comment caught her by surprise, and Indivara’s cheerful expression faltered, a frown of confusion finding its place upon her face. Glancing down at herself, Indivara tried to figure out what it was that looked good on her. She was wearing dragonrider pants and boots, so that wasn’t what he’d be talking about. Maybe her shirt? It was one that Kerrin (she didn’t think she’d ever call him by his honorific.) had made for her recently. It was a nice deep blue that he said matched her eyes; long sleeved and pulled in at the waist but designed to make it look like she actually had boobs, she felt she looked rather nice in it. Probably that was what he meant.

Looking back up, Indivara gave R’nd a quizzical look. “Thanks? Kerrin finished my shirt last week?” She wasn’t really sure why he’d be commenting on it, honestly; it wasn’t like it was interesting or fancy and certainly not eye-catching like the clothing R’nd and Val were so commonly seen in. Maybe that was it? The fact that she was wearing clothing that was actually her own – and made for her, no less! – instead of stealing it off Val. But Val’s shirts weren’t really appropriate for wearing to the Hold. They were more like dresses on her than shirts, and while she liked wearing his clothing around home (it was comfortable, and it smelled like him, and she liked that) it really wasn’t appropriate to wear out and about!

R’nd chuckled as he nodded while taking in her attire. “The shirt definitely becomes you as well. Kerrin really has your style figured out.” And he did. Their friend had always taken a fascination with dressing Indivara for at least the past decade. He supposed it was because Indivara never really had her own style back then and was the perfect person to try colours and styles on. R’nd knew she tolerated it because it was Kerrin and anyone else that tried to dress her would have ended up bruised. It was also nice seeing her in something that was made for her and fit her properly instead of in one of her friends’ stolen shirts. He was fairly certain Indivara still had at least one of his as well.

“However, that’s not what I meant,” R’nd smiled as he walked away to go pay for his items, enjoying the little bit of teasing he was able to get away with. On his way, he grabbed one more flower, adding it to his stash of goods. A few minutes later and R’nd carefully added everything to his satchel with one flower laid gently atop the other items and the other flower kept in hand. He gave Indivara a little nod toward the door, indicating he’d wait for her outside when she was finished.

When Indivara joined him outside, R’nd worried he might get a foot stomped or a shin kicked for his efforts of dragging it out but it seemed she was too curious to inflict harm just yet. Besides, his intentions were mostly good; he didn’t want to chat too much in the store where gossipers were hanging about. Of course walking around in the open area with people everywhere seemed like a much better idea.

“A beautiful lady deserves a beautiful flower of her own,” R’nd held out the rose to Indivara, inspired both from the way she had admired the one for the kitchen worker and her idea to get V’ler rose-scented items. His mother always enjoyed gardening and he remembered asking her once when he was a child about the different colours of some of the flowers she seemed to favour. Yellow roses, such as the one he gave to Indivara, implied a platonic friendship and was bright and cheery like the sun—which was very much like the mood she was radiating.

“And I meant happiness. Oh and being mated, actually mated, that is,” R’nd smiled and again started to walk away, taking his time as he waited for Indivara to get over his words and catch up.

“Kerrin created my style,” Indivara responded dryly, brushing a speck of imaginary dust off her hip with a snort. She’d always been happy to wear whatever fit, which was a good thing, considering she grew up in Katila and not some fancy holding. But Kerrin had always been obsessed with clothing, something that had not improved when the Stolen started rolling in and he got to see what ‘real people’ wore on a day to day basis. She was somewhat surprised her greenriding friend hadn’t forced himself into some Hall or another (she assumed there was a clothing-making Hall but didn’t care enough to educate herself on the matter) regardless of his eyesore for a dragon.

Honestly, he probably had, despite all the rules, regulations and other shit he’d have to avoid all together to get into a Hall. She wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest.

“It’s not?” Indivara asked of R’nd’s retreating back, a frown furrowing her eyebrows as she turned slightly to watch him make his way to the counter. She watched as he left her standing there, but his nod to her had her blinking before she realised the conversation wasn’t actually over, he was just making a show of being in charge. Indivara rolled her eyes dramatically, huffed a sigh and finished her shopping, not bothering to rush, nor glance out the window to see if R’nd was still there. When she’d finished, and paid, Indivara was slightly surprised to see R’nd still outside waiting for her.

An eyebrow arched up at R’nd’s statement, but she took the rose lightly and shook her head, not bothering to reply to his comment of beauty. She twirled the stem between her fingers, the rose hovering under her nose, and she enjoyed the scent for a few moments as she waited to see whether R’nd was going to continue the conversation or if he had just been waiting to give her the rose. Either was as likely at the other, in her opinion. He could be weird like that.

Indivara lifted her eyes, attention shifting to R’nd when he spoke. She frowned slightly at first, before blushing brightly as he walked away. Swallowing her surprise, Indivara’s frown returned as she trotted to catch up with her fellow bluerider’s much longer stride. He might have been walking slowly, but his steps were hardly short! When she caught up with him, she adjusted her pace to match his, used to walking fast to keep up with taller folks, though it was part of why she enjoyed being around V’ler, R’vi and others – they weren’t tall as mountains!

It took her a few moments to think of something to say, as she looped her arm through R’nd’s and focused on the street before them, watching other people go about their business. “Kinda like you and B’jin, huh?” she asked innocently, glancing slyly up at R’nd to see how he’d take the comparison.

“What?” R’nd was startled by the comparison and nearly tripped over his own feet with how off guard Indivara managed to catch him. He glanced down at her and grinned at the sly look he was being given. The girl knew exactly what to say to get back at him for teasing her as he was about the subject of love. It’s hardly a secret that you’re afraid of the word as much as you are the actual emotion. Or were, Ayyonth quickly tacked on the last bit before he got blasted for it. R’nd had admitted and accepted his feelings a while ago but it was still hard for him to think on it for too long. He blamed his upbringing and then going into exile for creating weird fears in him that involved losing those he loved.

“No, not all like us,” R’nd insisted as he led them down the street, doing his best to slow his pace so Indivara wouldn’t have to run to stay at his side. He was normally so accommodating to everyone around him but the little detail like length of legs and steps always seemed to escape him. “All right, a little like us since we’re… well, we are,” Oh just say it. It’s only a word. Mated. Rhymes with sated. Like what you and B’jin are each night. Now you try.

“I’m a bit envious of the fact that you don’t have to listen to Ayyonth constantly,” he confessed to Indivara with a sigh. “Fine. We’re mated. Are the two of you happy now? He’s laughing, by the way. I’m a constant source of amusement for him.” R’nd was ready to find a way to break up with his dragon.

He stopped talking for a moment as he led them to a little stall he had discovered a few months earlier. It was a kindly old man that seemed content to just sit and watch the world go by but he also made the best hot chocolate R’nd had ever tasted. It was rich and creamy and just utterly perfect. He ordered two drinks, passing one to Indivara before chatting with the man for a couple of minutes. It was a rather mundane conversation about the weather and health but the old man seemed pleased to talk about it and R’nd didn’t mind what the topics were.

R’nd thanked the man again for the drinks and offered his arm once more to Indivara before leading them back down the street with no real destination in mind now. “Anyway, you and V’ler are like us now. Living together, happy, and having amazing sex,” he smirked as he glanced down at Indivara but kept talking before she could get a word in, “but two months ago you were only two people sharing a living space. You have a real relationship now and I’m happy for you, Indivara.”

“You bring it down upon yourself, clearly,” Indivara replied, delighted by R’nd’s discomfort and overall reaction to her comment. She was caught somewhere between laughing at him, and doing her best not to laugh too much, because she was too curious about his stance on her relationship with V’ler, not to mention why he seemed to be the only person she’d come across who had anything to say about it. As far as she was aware, no one was aware of the actual change in their relationship? Primarily because everyone had been under the impression that they were mated for, well… how old was Varlea? Since about she was born. More or less?

Accepting the cup of hot drink, Indivara sipped it lazily and people watched, slightly irritated that the old man was delaying her discovery of R’nd’s inner-thoughts, but also rather too distracted by her own thoughts to glare at him or cause any trouble. Her thoughts faded away as R’nd offered her his arm, and she linked her own through it, walking beside him as he once more started off down the street, Indivara wondering mildly where they were going, though she realised easily enough that her fellow bluerider had no real destination in mind by the way he seemed to randomly choose a street to walk down when they got to a cross section.

Indivara had a mouthful of hot chocolate when R’nd made his comment about amazing sex and smirked at her, and she had to work rather had not to spit the delicious drink out as she tried to breathe it instead of swallowing. Indivara glared at R’nd in irritation, but couldn’t prevent the hot flush that coloured her face at his insinuations – which also brought forth the rather uncomfortable thought, had R’nd slept with V’ler? – Scrunching her nose up, Indivara decided she did not want to know. She knew (on some deep, bashed into a crevice level) that V’ler had slept with B’jin, and pretty much everyone that rode a green, and most of the people that rode blue, and probably a good portion of those on brown. Thanks to Veeth and his desire to make every female dragon in existence feel desired. But she didn’t think he’d slept with R’nd. Which was good, because the man was as good as her brother and that was just nasty.

Shaking off those thoughts before they got too stuck in her brain, Indivara settled for looking up at R’nd curiously, head tilted slightly to one side and blush finally managing to fade away a little, though it was still quite apparent. “How do you know?” No one else seemed to, and certainly while R’vi was a blabber mouth, she didn’t think he’d told anyone about their conversation so long ago about Venseth not chasing and her believing it was her lack of appetite… So why was R’nd so damned special?

R’nd glanced down at Indivara when she asked her question, somewhat startled by it. “Isn’t it obvious? I’m observant and know those that I care about. I wouldn’t say you were miserable before but you are definitely happy now.” He paused to take a sip of his drink and greeted a couple of ladies passing by a moment later. Did he want to tell Indivara everything she did now and risk her becoming too conscious of it all and trying to change it or seem unnatural in the way she moved? No, he didn’t want to risk it and have her try to stop the light bounce in her step or scowl to counter the faint smile and blush that sometimes tried to show. He also didn’t think she’d like to know that she almost seemed to forget where she was and stared off a bit when thinking about something, or rather, someone.

“You’re not giving yourself away as much as Rhaedalyn would, so don’t worry just yet,” he laughed as he quickly assured his companion that she wasn’t extra bubbly or lost in a daydream; yet. “I highly doubt anyone else would notice anything different about you or between the two of you.” R’nd could honestly say V’ler barely gave any outward change in emotion and it had been Indivara only that clued him into anything. V’ler played everything close to his chest if he could manage it and while R’nd was certain he caught a few extra glances and maybe a smile or two at Indivara, it was hard to say.

Indivara frowned at R’nd, not bothering to hide her scepticism at his answer, though it honestly made a lot of sense. It was definitely a R’nd-thing to notice what was going on with his friends, she just didn’t like that she’d apparently been obvious enough about something she didn’t realise she’d been sharing. That, too, shouldn’t have surprised her, though. Indivara had never been good at hiding what she was feeling, or who her feelings were directed at – though usually those emotions were irritation or anger or disgust. Not, well, not whatever it was she felt for V’ler. Coy doesn’t suit you, Venseth inserted dryly, but Indivara ignored him as R’dn laughed.

“Good to know,” Indivara drawled, not at all reassured. Rhaedalyn was an extreme and not a measure that Indivara considered insightful. She didn’t know anyone that was as cringeworthy as a happy Rhaedalyn. She would rather have herself measured against someone normal, though she wasn’t quite willing to find a comparison and didn’t want to poke R’nd about it any further.

“I guess its like how everyone knew you loved B’jin before you did,” Indivara lied. She’d been far too obsessed with her own teenage drama early in the relationship between the two riders to have any idea when or how R’nd had fallen for the greenrider, but she was feeling vulnerable and the best way she knew how to contest that feeling was to make someone else feel uncomfortable, and thus distract from herself. Gossiping with Parella had mostly filled her in on the ups and downs of the relationship between R’nd and B’jin, and she was sure R’nd would be horrified if he knew most of the gossip surrounding the two of them originally came from B’jin’s mouth. Greenriders really were notorious for gossiping with each other, and Parella wasn’t someone who could keep a secret when it was more fun to share it!

Finishing her drink, Indivara smiled innocently up at R’nd.

“Exactly. What?” R’nd agreed so quickly that he hadn’t really thought about what Indivara was saying and once it hit him, his eyes went wide and he narrowly avoided tripping on an uneven part of the path. What bothers you more? That you agreed with her that you love him or that everyone knows you do? Ayyonth was rumbling with laughter again and R’nd just mentally waved him away, annoyed with the teasing. Neither, actually. It was true; he didn’t mind that people knew who had his heart and even knowing it was love didn’t scare R’nd quite as badly as it used to although he did still sometimes panic that B’jin would one day leave him.

What bothered him was how Indivara so confidently pointed out that everyone knew he loved B’jin before he did. He wanted to vehemently deny it but a conversation with Kerrin early on, ridiculously early on in fact, stood out. It was some short time after their first flight together and Kerrin called him out on mooning over B’jin and being distracted and wearing a dorky grin all the time. R’nd had to admit he had been extremely happy after that win and couldn’t deny he had a crush on the greenrider but he didn’t think he had been so obvious all the time or for so long! You are an open book with your emotions and that isn’t a bad thing.

“Anyway,” R’nd quickly moved that topic along, not wanting to talk about his love life but Indivara’s, “from what I can tell and heard through the gossip, no one has seen a change and everyone assumes you’re both still mated and have been for turns.” It would likely stay that way as well since he wasn’t about to say anything to change anyone’s opinion on the matter.

Indivara didn’t bother to conceal her laughter at R’nd’s easy agreement, followed by his tripping up and squeaking – she would never be convinced he didn’t squeak that word – a question right after. Her laughter was bright and cheerful, and she blew an air kiss at R’nd when he found his steps again and began walking like a normal man once more. She was still giggling at random points under her breath, quite happy with herself, when he directed the conversation back to her and V’ler.

“Hmm,” Indivara hummed, nodding slightly. “Good.” She fell into silence then, mulling over the things that R’nd had told her and talked about, chewing on what he knew and what he believed everyone else knew. But she also went back to one of his other comments about being observant. She mulled on that for a while, only half conscious of the way Venseth was egging her on to actually ask her questions instead of swallowing them. She didn’t like not having the answer, and while she found it both easy and comfortable to talk to V’ler, it wasn’t something she had any skills with when it came to… well, anyone else.

“I have a question,” she said firmly, looking up at R’nd with a frown, feeling her face heat up as she met his eye and fought to find the right words. Her gaze didn’t stay on him for long, though, as her discomfort won out and she broke her gaze away to look roughly towards wherever it was they were heading. Her bush heated, but she was determined. “How do I get him to notice me?” She asked, managing to keep her voice strong though her words were spoken lowly. She didn’t want the whole Hold to gossip about her! Indivara glanced up at R’nd as she spoke though, eyebrows furrowed and face red but stubborn.

Indivara had found herself stuck in the rather awkward predicament; she was handsy and always had been, which she’d found meant V’ler didn’t really notice her as often as she would like him to. Sometimes she wasn’t angling for anything! But sometimes she really wanted him to notice her, and she still wasn’t confident enough in herself, in his feelings for her, to be frank with any frequency about wanting to get laid. She did her best to make sure V’ler knew she was absolutely thrilled when he initiated something, but she herself was too timid to do more than give him inviting kisses or glances and be disappointed when he didn’t pick up on the cues.

“I feel any advice I give you will be lost on V’ler. You had to fall for the one that’s hardest to read and provoke, didn’t you?” R’nd let out a slightly frustrated breath as he considered what normally worked and what would get V’ler’s head out of his writing long enough to notice what was going on around him. He really hadn’t expected such a question and given who were involved with it, R’nd took a bit longer to ponder on it until he felt a couple of his ideas might work. It was hard thinking like V’ler when for him, he noticed people when they smiled his way.

“Playfully nibble his ear if you’re already cuddling, that should give the man a clue and pull him back into reality,” it worked with B’jin, but R’nd knew better than to mention that! It would likely keep Indivara away from a tempting earlobe for the rest of her life, just like she was doing her best to avoid lavender. “Or wear something inviting, or nothing at all if you’re feeling daring, when you mention you’re going to bed. Bed, not sleep. That will help train him for the keyword and what is implied.”

R’nd studied Indivara, wondering if he was giving her answers she really wanted or if she was asking more for beauty tips about how to wear her hair or paint her lips like some of the ladies in Holds seemed to be doing. He didn’t think so, though; she already had her mate, the trouble was getting his attention when certain moods arose.

Glancing around, R’nd noted they were close to the Whetstone Tavern and decided they would need food and drinks if Indivara had more questions. “Let’s go grab a table at the tavern and I’ll treat us while we talk some more.”

Indivara laughed softly at R’nd, in a sort of self-deprecating manner. Looking up at R’nd, and forgetting her embarrassment from a moment before, Indivara lifted an eyebrow and gestured vaguely at herself. “Have you met me?” She asked, still amused. Of course she fell for someone who was impossible to get riled up! That was the only type of person she had any hope with, and she was glad it was V’ler! His generally unruffled personality meant her temper and tantrums didn’t send him running off; of course, that tended to just make her pissier at the time, but Indivara appreciated it when she wasn’t irked with him. He was sturdy and reliable and didn’t walk on eggshells around her or treat her like she as about to explode, even though she usually was.

Looking up when R’nd finally spoke again, Indivara’s eyebrows lifted up slightly and she considered his words with an odd seriousness. She could do the nibbling, his suggestion for inviting clothes or no clothes at all had her blushing crimson again. ‘Something inviting’ could possibly be managed, though Indivara was still incredibly self-conscious about her scars and the thought of them being on display wasn’t appealing at all – which definitely mean she wasn’t about to be flouncing around their weyr in the buff! She didn’t even like having too much light in the room, preferring the slight mysterious airs that were created with few glows, and the lack of definition her scars had at such times.

She did laugh at the idea of training V’ler, though, and smirked to herself at the concept. “Okay!” Food was always good, and Indivara was more than happy to eat on R’nd’s marks! “I want another hot drink,” she informed him, wrapping her arm once more through R’nd’s and looking around with interest as they entered the tavern. She hadn’t been in the Whetstone, though she’d heard good things about it from most of the other riders she crossed paths with, and she studied the woman who approached them with a frank look, letting R’nd order for her. Once their food and drinks were delivered, and the woman dismissed herself after R’nd spent even more time gossiping, Indivara – after making a quip about him talking to anyone and everyone – started peppering him with more questions, though not all of them were quite as serious and certainly none of them made her blush, too much, anyway.
