2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Mulrissa had attended a good number of Hatchings since she’d entered weyrlife as a child. As most weyrfolk did, she supposed, but it still meant she’d been to a great many. Though she hadn’t Stood at many of them, due to her pregnancies, mostly, she considered them the most important Weyr event. Sure, gold Flights were necessary to get to the Hatchings, but it was the birth of the new generation of dragons (and riders) that was truly most significant. So, Rissa had a soft spot for the person who’d taken it upon himself to record all of the Hatchings.

The person in question, V’ler of blue Veeth, appeared at every Hatching since he’d been Kidnapped (Even if she thought weyrlife to be vastly superior, she still figured she ought to name it what it was). Nowadays even though the Weyrs all had full, official Harpers as record keepers at Hatchings, he continued to archive them. Having a dragonrider recording Hatchings was important, to Rissa’s mind. Harper’s had beautiful penmanship and prose, but they didn’t always understand the intricacies of weyrlife. A Harper Hall trained rider, like V’ler, was frankly a perfect candidate for the task.

In order to show her appreciation, Rissa thought she ought to get V’ler a gift. Something useful. She remembered seeing him at some of the earlier Katila Hatchings writing on various scraps of paper. She was impressed he’d managed to find any at all on the Southern Continent, truth be told. At more recent Hatchings Rissa had he seen V’ler with neat stacks of new paper, but she thought he could do with something even nicer. Using her considerable resources among the weyrfolk, she managed to find a place to get a good quality wher-hide bound stack of paper. Rissa figured he would be able to use it, even if not specifically to record Hatchings. A protected way to keep paper in order could be very useful. Especially for an ex-Harper.

Now Mulrissa found herself wandering the halls of Telgar, humming quietly as she followed Bedith’s instructions towards V’ler’s weyr. She had wrapped the book in some leftover fabric from a skirt she had been making Ginorra and tied it off with some twine. Not a half bad wrapping job she figured. Soon she reached the weyr and knocked on the door.

“V’ler? It’s Mulrissa of Bedith. I was wondering if I could speak to you? It’s nothing important.” She added, worried he might be concerned about a goldrider showing up to his weyr.

Indivara looked up at the knock on the door. She was leaning against V’ler, reading a manual of sorts that B’jin had put together for her to study, learning some of the ins and outs of what it was Weyrlings could get up to, ask questions about, and of course how she should handle such situations and the answers she should give. Being diplomatic was not something Indivara was naturally very good at, but she was good at being opinionated and obnoxious, and there was nothing quite like telling someone they were wrong, and why they were wrong. She rather looked forward to that part of being a Weyrlingmaster, truth be told. Despite that, Indivara knew she had a long and hard road in front of her; women dragonriders were frowned upon, and she was the only female bluerider, and in many cases, the only one a lot of non-weyr folk had ever seen. There had been more of them, before the Plague, but like many things, that had changed in the past few decades.

“Are you expecting someone?” She asked V’ler, tilting her head back to look up at him with a frown even as she reached out to Venseth to see if he had heard any information about approaching visitors. The blue dragon was sleepy, and uninterested, but she got the feeling he was not informed anyone would be arriving. It was about then that Mulrissa’s greeting came floating through the door, and Indivara scrunched her nose up, giving V’ler a dirty look as if he had planned the whole thing. Slipping out from under the fur the pair of them was wrapped in, Indivara threw it back over V’ler – making sure to get it in his face – and sauntered her way towards the door. The girl was dressed in one of her friend’s shirts, the hem falling easily to her knees, and the sleeves rolled up so they did not fall past her hands. Her long hair was loose and all over the place and rather static-y from the dry weather.

Pulling the door open, Indivara looked up at the much taller woman, a frown drawing her eyebrows down and together. “What do you want?” The fact that the woman had said it wasn’t important had Indivara biting her tongue on telling her to fuck off, in that case, but curiosity was a strong contender, and she wanted to know what the woman wanted with V’ler. The bluerider in question’s voice – “Let her in, Vara,” – interrupted Indivara’s glaring up at Mulrissa, and the girl’s expression darkened, her lips pursing in a flat sneer even as Queenie popped out of between, landed on Indivara’s shoulder, and hissed at Mulrissa. Indivara petted her firelizard, not removing her scowling gaze from the unwanted guest. After a long moment, Indivara stepped back, and swung one arm wide, in a mockery of a welcoming gesture. Then she turned her back on the woman and made her way back to where V’ler was still rugged up on the small sofa.

Indivara reclaimed her seat curled up against V’ler, wrapping the blanket back around her smaller body and burying her nose back into her manual, though she was clearly paying attention to what was going on between her not-mate and the goldrider who had decided to drop by for a visit.

V’ler didn’t bother replying to Indivara’s question about expecting someone. When did he ever intentionally invite someone over? He supposed B’jin was from time to time when he was too lazy to find the greenrider to give him something he had written whether it be a short poem for consideration or to get an opinion on a melody running amok in his head. Otherwise, V’ler wasn’t fond of most people and didn’t waste his time with them if he could avoid it. Indivara’s charming disposition helped keep people away as well.

Considering he was taking a break from strumming some chords on his guitar, trying to work out the right sound he wanted for lyrics he wrote, and was now comfortably encased in a blanket with Indivara also trapping him, he had no intention of even getting up to answer the door. A breath was taken to call out that whoever it was could just let themselves in when Indivara seemed eager to greet the mystery caller that turned out to be Mulrissa and jumped up. The fur tossed on his head almost stayed where it was but he ended up tugging it back down and arranging it around himself nicely with no intent of sharing it again.

From the way she sauntered to the door and the way she greeted the goldrider, V’ler would almost say Indivara was jealous and making sure Mulrissa knew she was entering their domain and he was already claimed; except he knew Indivara too well to consider that an emotion she’d freely show or even have in regards to him. “Let her in, Vara,” he called out with an eye roll, knowing without even seeing, that Indivara was glaring at the other woman.

Another eye roll was given, along with a sigh, when Indivara ruined all of his plans – par for the course, really – and wormed her way back under the blanket. Again, it could seem like a possessive move and in some ways, it likely was. They were mated in the eyes of everyone and he figured out long ago that he was safe and her steady and solid rock of support. Not that Indivara would ever consider a goldrider any sort of competition nor did V’ler have any desire to have a relationship with one—or anyone for that matter.

He gave a small half smile to Mulrissa when she entered the room but he didn’t get up. He was cold and it was his home; he didn’t feel the need to stand up to greet someone. “Hey. What brings you by?” He assumed she needed some knowledge that Harper Hall had archived and he was an easy way in or perhaps she just needed something copied out since most people didn’t stop by simply for a social call. He didn’t overly mind Mulrissa though. They never really spent any time together in Katila but he liked to people-watch and noticed she was a hard worker and truly enjoyed the weyrlife and took to dragonriding rather effortlessly. She was also a special case with Impressing just before being considered too old to risk an Impression to and that made her stand out more to V’ler.

Other than his usual assumptions as to why someone popped by unannounced, V’ler had no idea what would bring the goldrider to him. He had to admit, his interest was piqued.

It only took a few moments for the door to swing open, revealing Indivara. Mulrissa smiled at the other women, taking in her state of partial undress. Considering Indivara was only wearing a shirt that clearly wasn’t hers (unless she specifically chose shirts that could be used as dresses on her own, which Rissa doubted), Mulrissa had a sudden thought that, since V’ler and Indivara were weyrmated, it might have been a good idea to send notice she was coming by. Well, she hadn’t, and she’d grown up with her promiscuous elder sister and her green riding mother among dragonfolk, so Rissa supposed there wouldn’t be anything she really hadn’t seen before. Still, it quite possibly added to the slight awkwardness of her unprompted gift.

She was about to respond to Indivara’s (slightly rude) question when V’ler’s invitation came from inside. Rissa continued smiling at Indivara, unfazed by her scowling - Ginorra had just turned thirteen, after all, she was used to it - and followed her into the weyr.

“Good afternoon,” Rissa greeted them both as Indivara curled back under the blanket with V’ler. Ah, good. she thought, glad she had only interrupted some quiet domesticity instead of some of the alternatives Indivara’s outfit had presented. Still, she was amused by Indivara’s possessive display. You have nothing to fear from me, she thought, I’ve already had the blueriding love of my life, and I’m not looking to replace him. Mentally shaking off that train of thought, Rissa held out the wrapped gift.

“I wanted to thank you for all the archival work you’ve done, and continue to do, for the Weyrs. It’s important work, and I wanted to acknowledge it.” She said. “So, this is for you.”

V’ler eyed Mulrissa suspiciously as she held out the gift before she gave her explanation. It wasn’t his birthday or any other sort of special day and he started to wonder if she was looking to butter him up for some reason since it wasn’t like he just randomly received gifts on a daily basis—or at all really. When the reasoning for the gift came, V’ler wasn’t sure if he should continue to be suspicious or intrigued by her words. He received the occasional words of gratitude for recording Hatchings or if someone liked a song he wrote but, well, he just wasn’t used to praise since his days at the Harper Hall.

He straightened the way he was sitting as he reached out to take the present, eyeing the material it was wrapped in for a moment. After another moment’s hesitation it was opened and V’ler blinked owlishly at the journal he held. He wasn’t an expert on wher hide but what he held seemed to be rather nice and he ran his fingers over the cover before flipping through the blank pages. He was still being rather old fashioned with using loose leaf papers but that was more due to his need to rewrite everything a final time once he was satisfied. A nicely bound book such as this could be used for free-flowing thoughts and musical ideas or it could even make logging a Hatching easier by jotting down notes on pages that wouldn’t flap in the breeze quite as much. It was something to experiment with and possibly consider getting more of.

“Thank you,” he murmured as he still looked at the journal, thoughts whirling about in his head for how to use it. Veeth nudged him in the back of his mind that he should possibly do a bit better than that in showing his gratitude for such a thoughtful gift. “I’m glad something I enjoy doing is helpful and appreciated by some. I guarantee this will come in handy,” and with Veeth’s approval that he did well, V’ler gave a rare genuine smile that wasn’t tinted with smugness or amusement.

Mulrissa smiled back, glad that her gift had gone over well. She had been a bit unsure, since someone you didn’t really know bringing you something could be a bit suspicious or unerving. Thankfully, it seemed to have been accepted at face value, which was, after all, how she had intended the gift.

“If you use up the entire notebook, let me know. I’ll direct you to the merchant I got it from. If you want another, I mean.” Rissa said, gesturing vaguely towards the notebook. She then glanced around between V’ler and Indivara, deciding that she’d taken up enough of their lazy afternoon. Nodding at the two of them, she turned to leave.

“Have a good rest of your day, both of you. I hope you get good use out of it, V’ler.” After waiting a moment to listen to their goodbyes if they chose to gave them, she exited the weyr and headed towards her own.

That didn’t go too badly. Mulrissa thought at her dragon, relieved that the delivery of the book had gone over smoothly.

I am unsurprised. Bedith responded lazily from where she lay half sleeping in their weyr. Now that you’re done with it, you should oil my hide. I itch, and the blueriders have taken up enough of your time.

Mulrissa sighed, endeared by her dragon’s lack of regard for the importance of showing respect to people beyond themselves, even though something as simple as a notebook.
