Ayontay beamed at the thin pieces of wood before him. They were all of his finished products of the test his sort-of-but-not-quite teacher had tasked him. He had taken an interest in wood-working several turns ago which prompted him to study math harder so he could understand dimensions and figuring out how to make something the right size that was also level. It was only in recent times that someone took him in on an unofficial apprenticeship. He knew he’d never actually be an apprentice or master – unless he wanted to leave the Weyr and go to an actual Hall and that sort of scared Ayontay who loved dragons too much – but it was nice to have someone show what they knew and guide him when there was time.

He had been given a box full of scrap pieces of wood in varying width and thickness and told to practice chiselling words into them. It was to help with his control of the tool and to learn the proper pressure to use depending on the wood. Some of the thinner pieces didn’t last long as he busted through them on the first letter and others were a sloppy mess, especially when it came to carving in the curvy letters. But after weeks of practice, Ayontay saw a change in his skill and felt comfortable holding the chisel and knowing the right amount of pressure. His goal was to one day be good enough at carving figurines and that would take a lot of control with fine-tuned detailing so he didn’t mind making what were essentially signs.

Half way through the assignment was when he came up with the idea to make gifts that were simply his friends’ names. He remembered almost breaking a finger when he swung the small hammer down on the digit instead of the chisel because he made himself laugh too much with the idea of making a ‘I am your son’ sign to hold when he saw R’nd and then pass it to his half-siblings when they wanted the man to know he had more kids as well. That had been a good lesson in focus and to not let his mind wander while working.

His teacher was impressed with his progress and assured him they’d start trying 3D carving soon, though it wouldn’t be the small intricate figurines that were Ayontay’s goal. Still, learning the basic skills was always the best place to start.

He had been lucky that R’dal was at Telgar not long after finishing his projects and after giving the man his sign that was painted in blues close in shade to Edath, he had swindled a ride to Fort so he could visit some of their other friends. It was only when they landed that Ayontay gave R’dal R’dare’s to pass along as well because he wanted to spend as much time with Madiquel as he could before getting a ride home or maybe just staying with one of the blueriding friends of his.

Shadow was on his shoulder, crooning his encouragement as Ayontay walked to Madiquel’s weyr she shared with her father. He eyed the two pieces of wood he made with her in mind and wondered if he was an idiot for thinking she’d like something like this and then worried that it wasn’t up to par and looked like a kid in the crèche had slapped paint on it. He would have left, chickening out, if it weren’t for the fact that he was already outside her door. He wouldn’t know her thoughts unless he went in and found out!

Ayontay knocked and sent Shadow to go find her. He hoped she was home but foolishly hadn’t thought to send Shadow ahead sooner to find out her location. His smiled widened as he heard movement and the door opened—to reveal Jajojin. Ayontay gasped and stood up straighter, hoping he wasn’t about to get his head chewed off for coming by at such an hour. Actually, that would be preferable to being shoved off the ledge that wasn’t too far behind him. Luckily all he got was a thin smile and a confirmation that Madiquel was inside before Jajojin walked by him to head to wherever it was he went in the evening.

With a sigh of relief, Ayontay went inside, shutting the door behind him. “Madi? Your dad let me in. Hope that’s okay?”

Clover chittered where she sat on Madiquel's bare shoulder as the girl darted through the weyr she shared with her father, from the bathroom to her own bedroom. She heard her father laugh at her, in that unique way of his, and she giggled as she flung the curtain back over the door. Clover took off, sending droplets spraying across the room; she enjoyed bathing with Madiquel, and the girl saw no reason not to indulge the little flitter. She'd oil her once she was dressed, she decided, tossing her towel aside and quickly climbing into her clothing. Her long wet hair was wrapped up in her towel, and Madiquel sat on the edge of the bed as she pulled on a pair of thick socks. There were colder places in the Weyr, but after spending her childhood in the warmth of Katila Weyr, Madiquel felt the cold of Telgar a lot more than she liked. She wished they'd moved to Ista, it sounded so much warmer there.

Clover's sudden trill of greeting had Madiquel looking up, and she smiled when she saw Shadow. “Hello Shadow! What are you doing here?” Unwrapping the towel from her hair, Madiquel roughly dried the strands. She was glad she'd managed to pull all her clothing on ebfore the little firelizard had appeared! She flushed, thinking what a disaster that could have been, but giggled when she heard a knock on the door and her father make his way to answer it. She laughed aloud when she heard Ayontay call out to her. “One second!” She called, finishing with her hair and shaking her head to set the long strands down her back. Tossing the towel onto a hook one one wall, Madiquel danced out of the room and into the main room, grinning at her friend, Madiquel threw herself at Ayontay in a quick hug, before stepping back.

“What cha doing?”

Ayontay blushed upon receiving the hug and glanced toward Jajojin who was passing by, likely back to his room. He couldn’t tell what the man was thinking. He worried he was about to see angry dad mode come out but he was also convinced he saw a hint of a smile. Either way, Ayontay decided to keep his hands firmly on the gift and not make any sudden movements that looked like he was going in for another hug or anything else. Madiquel’s dad really made him nervous sometimes!

“I’ve been working on my wood carvings and I finished something for you and I couldn’t wait to bring them by,” he probably should have waited though. It wasn’t really late but it was getting there and he hadn’t fully thought through whether or not Madiquel would have plans of her own or if her father would want guests staying late into the evening. He was willing to risk it, even if he just had a chance to pass the boards to her and leave.

“I hope you like them!” He held out the two pieces of wood he had lovingly carved for her to take. One was her name with a simple flower beside it. Now that he looked at it again, he found the flower to be ugly and decided he should have either tried painting it on or not attempted it at all. But he liked the colours he had picked to paint that piece in, at least. The other piece was a little larger since he decided to get wordy and pretend he was a Harper that could write beautiful poetry. He knew Madiquel liked such things and he was kind of proud it. ‘With brave wings, she flies’ seemed like something R’nd would have said to a lady back in the days pre-B’jin and Ayontay felt it summed his friend up well. She was so strong and brave after all she went through with the landslide, and even if she never Impressed a dragon of her own, Ayontay saw her soaring high.

Madiquel’s mouth opened, forming a little ‘o’ of surprised delight at Ayontay’s words, her eyes as wide as saucers. He’d made something for her? She hadn’t even realised he was learning how to carve wood! Oh Faranth she was a terrible friend! Her thoughts were interrupted before she could act on them, and instead she peered down at the items held out towards her. She beamed, suddenly delighted once more, and carefully selected one so she could examine it thoroughly.

“Ayontay!” She breathed, running her fingers over the wonderfully carved flower and feeling the bumps and grains in the wood and the little quirks to the paint. It was gorgeous and she blushed with pleasure that he’d thought of her and wanted to make her something so sweet! “It’s beautiful!” she was gushing, but she didn’t care. It was so wonderfully lovely and it was such beautiful colours and he’d really made it just for her?! Well, obviously, since it had her name carved into it, but still! She held it up so Clover could see, the little firelizard perched on her shoulder and leaning down to peer at the wood. She trilled her approval.

Gently handing the first piece back to Ayontay for a moment, Madiquel almost greedily snatched the other one from his fingers, turning it over and running her fingers over it with the same delighted, hungry fascination as before. She breathed gustily as she read the words, eyes misty as she looked up at her friend, definitely her best friend! “Thank you!” she half-whispered, flinging her arms around his neck again for another hug, holding tight for several heartbeats before she snatched the one she’d handed him back, and spun on her heels. Clover shrieked at the sudden movement and took off.

“Papa! Look!” Gushing in delight, she crowded into her father’s space and pressed the two wooden pieces into his hands, standing over him determinedly and waiting for him to examine each piece thoroughly before snatching them back and holding them to her chest. “Ayontay made them for me!” She explained, in case he was having a moment and had not noticed what was happening between his daughter and her friend. Leaning up she kissed him on the cheek and then darted back to Ayontay, still holding the items to her chest.

“Come on!” Freeing one hand, she grabbed Ayontay’s and dragged him to her room. “Help me find a good spot for them!”

Ayontay felt his ears going warm from the hug and lifted a hand to one to feel it and found it actually was warm. They were probably bright red as well! He wanted to die of embarrassment over how he was blushing so much from Madiquel’s praises that his damn ears were even blushing. Still, he couldn’t help the smile at her excitement and how she showed her dad – well, tried to, she really didn’t give him all that much time to do more than acknowledge that the wood existed—and Ayontay laughed, suddenly forgetting his embarrassment and just revelling in how happy he had made her.

Wait, what? Her bedroom? Ayontay had spent plenty of time in her room and it had never seemed odd and even Jajojin didn’t seem to care, though Ayontay had caught him from time to time checking up on them. But now, he suddenly felt awkward and shy about going in there. Nothing had changed, except maybe he was starting to realise he really liked Madiquel more than and different than he liked their other friends. She was just so special. Beautiful, funny, kind, and strong. But he was… awkward. You could definitely tell he was one of R’nd’s boys as he looked like his dad and his half-brother T’ryn, but he didn’t think he had half the confidence as either one of them and he still had his baby fat and just felt like he wouldn’t end up with anyone or even a dragon. When he tried to tell T’ryn that, his brother told him to shut up and stop worrying since he was so young still. Ayontay had noticed how uncomfortable T’ryn was and wondered if the bronzerider considered himself to be too young still as well.

No matter what, he had decided to keep his crush hidden as best as he could because he didn’t want to lose his friendship with Madiquel. They had so much fun together and he’d hate to lose it because he wanted to kiss her and she was disgusted at the thought. Shadow, perched on his shoulder, nudged his head against his cheek in reassurance and Ayontay smiled and gave the tiny blue a pat on his head.

“I think you should put the one with your name outside your room. I mean, you and your dad know where your room is, but any company that comes by will know and know better than to wander in but they can also see how amazing the sign is,” he laughed lightly as he mock-bragged about his work. He was proud of it but he didn’t think it was the best piece of work there ever was.

Kicking off his shoes, as he always did when he entered Madiquel’s room so he didn’t track dirt, Ayontay wandered around, studying the walls. “For the other one… above the bed? By the dresser?” He laughed again over how very unhelpful he was being. “I dunno, Madi. Are you sure you really want to see it every day? Maybe shove it in the closet?” Her reaction was so genuine that he knew she couldn’t have faked it but even still, he didn’t want her to feel obligated to hang it if she really didn’t want to.

“That’s a great idea!” She trilled, trotting back out of the bedroom and past Ayontay so she could stare at the doorway. Well, it was not really a doorway, it was more of a curtained off corner of her father’s weyr. It wasn’t really made for two people, but they had made it work. Jajojin didn’t want to take up an actual weyr when he didn’t have a dragon, and Madiquel figured it would have been too painful for him, anyway, so he had claimed a low-level room for them to share. Madiquel figured she’d be moving out in the next couple of years, just to have her own space, but she wasn’t ready yet. Besides, her papa needed her! He had his bad days still, and she knew she wasn’t what he wanted (he wanted his dragon, obviously!) but she did her best to make sure he ate and was looked after when he couldn’t look after himself.

It helped that she still needed him! She still slept with her stuffed toys, and she kept the glows in the corner of the room uncovered during the night so the darkness would not nip at her toes and give her nightmares. She knew she was not ready to be alone yet, but she also knew she was closing in on fifteen, and by then most people would consider her much too old to be sharing a weyr with her father. It was somewhat scary, honestly. At least they were both weyrbred, so there was no talk of marrying her off, even though she did not want to Impress a dragon. She would rather be an old maid in a Weyr than a housewife to some rich lord!

After a thoughtful silence staring at the outer area, she trotted over to her dad and dragged him back, telling him how she wanted it hung and making him go find some line to hold it up. Then she directed the tall man on how to hang the wooden sign so that it would be visible to anyone that passed her door, but wouldn’t hit anyone in the head when they came into said room. Well, maybe her papa, but she grinned playfully at him when he said he would have to duck under it and gave him a hug, sending him back to whatever he had been doing so she could skip back in and look for another spot, this time for the piece with the quote.

“Of course I want to see it every day,” she scolded Ayontay, rolling her eyes playfully and sticking her tongue out at him. She spun around in a circle, looking all around her small room before decided on a spot on her bedside table. She cleared a pile of odds and ends out of the way, putting them in new spots (most of them back where they actually went) and then brushed at the table top before she set the woodwork on it, setting it against the glow basket so it stood up nicely and she could read it. Flopping down on her bed, she wriggled around and then turned her head so she could see the wood and the quote from where she lay. Sitting up, she beamed at Ayontay. “Perfect!” She cheered, delighted. “Now it’ll be one of the first – and last – things I see each day!” She was completely oblivious to any implications that could have, simply thrilled that such a lovely thought had been turned into such a wonderful piece of work.

Besides, the quote was beautiful, and she just knew that reading it when she covered the glows would give her good dreams, and reading it when she got up in the morning would give her strength to face whatever the day brought about! It was wonderful!

Ayontay, like most everyone else, was intimidated by Jajojin given his large size and somewhat afraid of him given how unstable he could be. However, he always liked how Madiquel never seemed to be or even notice that she should be, as she always freely babbled at him about the day or dragged him into whatever excitement she was currently wrapped up in. Like now. Ayontay was smiling as he watched the way she dragged him around and gave directions for hanging her new name sign. He didn’t seem annoyed by it but more like he enjoyed being a part of her life. He really liked their relationship and was even a little envious of it.

When it came to the other sign, Ayontay almost choked on the laughter that her impromptu cleaning had brought about. The sign would be the first and last thing she saw every day? Did that mean she’d think of him at those times as well? Ayontay was pretty sure he was in a coma and having a delightful dream. Then again, it didn’t mean she’d think of him or if she did, not in the way he thought about her. So he just smiled, proud that his work was so well-received and made someone else happy.

“R’dal said he’d give me a ride back tomorrow, cuz you know he’s already asleep,” he laughed again, knowing they both knew how much that particular friend loved his naps and a proper night’s sleep. “I’ll probably stay with him tonight but if you’re not ready for bed, I can stay a bit longer and we can trade Weyr gossip.” At her agreement to the idea, Ayontay smiled again and they both flopped on her bed, their usual hang out spot for such chats. Shadow curled up in his lap and he lazily pet the firelizard as Madiquel recounted a story she heard that morning.
