He had been at Fort Weyr for two years, learning a lot, and noticing even more. He was the quiet outcast at first so he had a lot of time to simply watch everyone and overhear conversations he wasn’t a part of. Even after he was accepted by a group of friends and felt like he belonged, Quinvalis was still oftentimes quiet and listening in on what was going on around him. He felt it was the best way to avoid trouble and learn the true workings of the Weyr.

One of the biggest things he learned was that the dragonless ex-riders made almost everyone nervous in one way or another. Some of the men and women who lost their dragons in the plague or other ways had moments of angry outbursts or panicked when they relived the moment the dragon died. Some people didn’t know what to say to them and saw them as outcasts and even failures. It sadly wasn’t a rare thing to hear whispers that the rider should have died with the dragon as they were meant to or that it was cowardly to continue living. It all made Quinvalis rather upset and he sometimes wondered if he was supposed to die then as well. Why continue living if people thought you were weird or shouldn’t be here because the one person or dragon that owned half your heart and soul was gone? He’d been told all his life by his mother that he was wonderful and meant for great things but when family took everything away and saw you as competition or a roadblock on the way to greatness themselves, it was hard to believe in such things.

He felt connected with the dragonless, but Quinvalis had to admit that they scared him at times as well. It was hard to know what mood they’d be in, especially Jajojin, though he was learning how to view the man thanks to his daughter, Madiquel. Wenon, though, always seemed lonely to him. He couldn’t say for certain if she actually was but she always seemed distant from others and held herself to such a high professional standard that Quinvalis wondered if anyone dared to breach the walls and try to have a casual conversation or dinner with her.

It was why, on the last trip home via R’nya, he had asked his mom if he could take some of their famous stew back to the Weyr with him. He had also spent nearly an hour shopping for the ex-WeyrWoman which proved to be a challenge since he didn’t know anything about her or what she might like. He figured it would be rude to get her something with dragons and didn’t know if she liked art. In the end he bought a scarf with rich colours that reminded him of the autumn.

By the time they returned to the Weyr, Quinvalis debated going to see Wenon now or in the morning but figured someone else might eat the stew before he had a chance to give it to her. He went to the kitchen and asked one of the few remaining staff if he could quickly heat it up since the brief trip between had chilled it.

Once the stew was ready, Quinvalis double checked that he still had the scarf in his pack he had travelled with and made his way to Wenon’s weyr. Everyone seemed to know where the dragonless lived to help avoid them, but Wenon and Jajojin were even easier to track down since they were the mentors for R’nya and Rhaedalyn and he helped both leaders sometimes with writing notes or running errands.

Outside her door, Quinvalis gave a knock, waited a few seconds, then called out, “Ms Wenon? It’s Quinvalis. It’s nothing urgent though!” He hastily tacked that on, worried she might think Rhaedalyn had need of her and sent him as messenger.

Though Wenon had a desk in the Weyrwoman's office, she tried not to spend too much time there. As much as she wanted to be privy to all the goings on of the Weyr, which being in the Weyrwoman's office certainly helped with, Wenon knew Rhaedalyn did not want her breathing down her neck all hours of the day. And truly, she did believe Rhaedalyn was a competent Weyrwoman and didn't need her constant presence. She'd never tell Rhaedalyn that though - had to keep the younger woman on her toes.

You could compliment her on occasion.

Shush, that's what R'nya's for. Wenon scolded her memory of Jormath, and instead re-focused on arranging her other desk. She'd had G'nen procure one and bring it to her weyr. While she didn't want to be hovering over Rhaedalyn all day, having a desk simply made Wenon feel better. Even if it was just an old desk with an uneven leg G'nen had done his best to fix (He'd picked up a decent proficiency with woodcarving on the Southern Continent, though he would never be making fancy furniture). She kept meticulous notes on the goings on of Fort Weyr (though she sometimes mistakenly wrote 'Igen'), and had several lists of 'things to make sure Rhaedalyn knows,' as well as all the written communications she'd received and decided to keep for future referencing. She was currently going through her message box, making sure they were stored in chronological order. Wenon was just smoothing out a note that had gotten a bit crumpled when she heard Quinvalis' voice.

"You may come in, Quinvalis." She called back, replacing the now flattened note to the box and turning her attention to the door to her weyr. He usually brought messages from Rhaedalyn, and R'nya as well, so Wenon was curious what he might have to say. The boy had said it wasn't urgent, but plenty of things weren't, so she had really no idea what this visit might be about.

Biting his lip in a moment of hesitation, Quinvalis started to wonder if it was a bad idea after all to disturb the woman when he wasn’t on official business. Too late, though, since he had already announced his presence and couldn’t flee from losing his nerve. So he entered, being as silent as he could, though he was pretty sure no one else would be in the weyr. He didn’t know for sure; maybe Wenon had a lover that somehow escaped the gossip of the Weyr and he was interrupting something intimate. He felt the colour drain from his face with that thought and paused mid-step, once again considering fleeing with a quick ‘never mind’ tossed out.

Luckily, he didn’t, and he was soon facing the woman sitting at her desk, properly clothed, and Quinvalis exhaled the breath he had been holding during all the wild thoughts that had been running through his head. “Good evening,” he greeted with a small smile and was glad for his full hands so he didn’t fidget while trying to find the best way to explain why he was there. He probably should have thought of that before coming over.

“I, uh, went to visit my mom today and I, well…” the best way was the most direct and to just spit out what he wanted to say. Wenon especially seemed the type to hate beating around the bush and would probably appreciate a quick explanation. “Our tavern makes the best stew in all of Telgar and I thought maybe you’d like to try it,” he lifted the pot a bit, as if it wasn’t already obvious what was in it. A quick scan of the organized desk showed there was a clear spot and Quinvalis took another step closer so he could set it down gently. He had made sure nothing sloshed over the edge on the walk and it now sat harmlessly for Wenon to hopefully eat later.

“I was also in the market and,” how did he explain he was shopping for a gift and why? He didn’t want it to seem like a pity gift and upset the woman; he only wanted to show her some kindness. “I wanted to get you something. As a thank you for working so hard.” And so she’d know someone was thinking of her but he didn’t know how to say that and instead just held up the bag with the scarf in it and looked down in embarrassment, hoping she’d accept both gifts.

It was a few moments of waiting before Quinvalis appeared in the weyr. Wenon looked at the pot he carried curiously, oblivious to the boy's train of thought. She was a bit unsure of what the Candidate was doing. Surely Rhaedalyn or R'nya hadn't sent him to bring her a meal? They knew perfectly well there was no need to make sure she was eating enough (she had a son to do that for her), so it seemed unlikely. Nevertheless, she returned his greeting and waited for the situation to be explained.

Thankfully Quinvalis got right to the point of his visit, even if Wenon blinked a few times as he finished explaining, not entirely sure what was happening. He had brought her stew made by his mother? And something that was still concealed by the bag he held. How curious. She smiled at the care with which Quinvalis set down the pot of stew, appreciative of the gesture. Even if it was more likely due to unwillingness to deal with making a mess of her desk than caring about her things. Though, it occurred to her, if he bothered to bring her a gift in the first place maybe he was just considerate like that.

You haven't said anything to him yet. Her subconscious pointed out to her. Wenon shook herself out of her thoughts and smiled softly at Quinvalis.

"Thank you, Quinvalis. It is a kind gesture. I am sure your mother's stew is wonderful." She said, giving the stew and appraising glance. Not the she was a culinary expert, but she was curious if she could identify some of what was in it. It certainly smelled lovely, now that it was closer to her. She turned back to Quinvalis and gave him a questioning look.

"You did not need to get me anything. I appreciate it, however. What is in the bag?" Wenon asked.

Quinvalis frowned. Did she really receive gifts so little that she didn’t know what to do when one was offered to her? He hoped that wasn’t the case as it made his heart ache a bit more for her and he wondered at how lonely she really was and for how long. Then again he may have read everything about her entirely wrong and she was well loved by a special someone and she seemed detached because of her time as a Weyrwoman. Maybe that was why she was asking what was in the bag—it was possible it was beneath a lady of a high ranking station to open her own gifts.

He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do! Explain that she should open the bag and see for herself or just reveal it himself? A glance down at the bag made him frown even deeper. He was such an idiot! He was holding his bag he used for traveling which had the scarf inside it. Of course Wenon wasn’t going to just take his beat up old bag and dig through it hoping to find what was supposed to be hers.

With a nervous laugh, Quinvalis tugged it open, mumbling a quick apology though he didn’t give a reason for it. It was pretty open-ended; sorry for bothering her, presuming things, being absent-minded, wasting her time, he was pretty sure the list could go on. The scarf was carefully pulled free lest it get snagged on something and it was presented to Wenon with a small smile. He didn’t explain its purpose; scarves were pretty self-explanatory with their purposes of being warm and even to accessorize.

Wenon's face softened at Quinvalis' embarrassment, though she kept herself from smiling. She had an image to keep up, though she sometimes considered letting people see past it. Quinvalis probably wouldn't go telling the whole Weyr he got the terrifying ex-Weyrwoman to smile, even if she did. Who would even believe him if he did?

She thanked him and reached out for the scarf, carefully turning it over in her hands. It was soft, and felt like it would be warm. Wenon spent a moment inspecting it, nodding as she determined it was well made. The colors were very nice as well. Wenon couldn't help but be reminded of Yanth; his rich brown hide would look nice with them. Perhaps she'd have to wear it the next time (she had stopped saying 'if' a long time ago) she had to go somewhere on dragonback. Yanth would appreciate matching the people he carried. He may not be her dragon, but Wenon intended to look as if she belonged on dragonback even if thinking of being there made her tremble slightly. She quickly banished the thoughts, carefully putting the scarf down on the desk in front of her.

"It is beautiful, thank you. I appreciate the gifts, Quinvalis. If the pot the stew is in is yours, I will instruct whoever comes to clear it away to return it to you." Wenon almost smiled again. "Now, I'm, sure you have some task to attend to that isn't chatting with old women. I hope you have a good rest of your day. You are always welcome to stop by."
