M’dox sighed dramatically, and threw yet another shirt onto the pile of fabric currently cascading off his bed. As someone raised in a cothold, he’d been raised with the idea that going into the Hold, especially a major Hold like Telgar, was a big deal and you had to dress nicely. So of course he had to spend a good deal of time fretting over his outfit and making a right mess out of his weyr.

At least he’d done laundry only three days before, so most of his wardrobe was clean, and therefore wearable, giving him plenty of options.

Of course, said doing of laundry was the cause of his current predicament. As excited as he was to have (maybe?) made a friend and been invited to spend time in the hold, his more cynical side wouldn’t stop bolstering his anxiety. The negative voice in the back of his mind kept bringing up possibilities M’dox would rather not think of, about how he’d just make a fool of himself, T’bia had probably forgotten all about him, or, perhaps worse, decided not to go through with their plans, either having Jycenth send the message that their trip was cancelled, or ignoring them altogether. As much as he tried to focus on what shirt to wear, the negative murmurings in his head suffused him with anxiety. M’dox could see his hands shaking as he unfolded another shirt.

They will contact us. Riquarth said soothingly, wrapping M’dox in love through their bond. Do not fret so much.

“When have I ever not fretted?” M’dox muttered, sending a glance toward the curtain separating his bedroom from the cavern where his dragon lounged. He could feel the brown’s affectionate laughter, as he lay in wait for their summons from Jycenth and T’bia. M’dox went back to looking at his clothing.

You know, you’ll be wearing your riding jacket most of the time. The dragon pointed out with good natured teasing. Your shirt will barely be seen.

“Damnit, you’re right.” M’dox cried, throwing down the shirt he was holding in frustration. Frowning, he picked the shirt back up. It was a resplendent blueish purple shirt, with a tight waist and loose sleeves. He’d gotten it as a thank you gift from a Lower Caverns woman who he’d helped in Katila as a weyrling, helping her clean out the huts and rooms of people who had already moved back North and left things behind. The shirt had been something he’d found, and she’d let him keep it, noticing his longing stares at the beautiful fabric. He liked the shirt, and even if no one else saw it, wearing it would make him feel better. M’dox quickly slipped off his thin sleep shirt in favor of the purple one, pleased he’d managed to make a decision. He also grabbed a pair of light hide pants, made for riding but not the heavy ones that were part of the ‘official’ dragonrider outfit.

M’dox finished dressing, grabbing his boots and jacket and wandering out to Riquarth, leaning against his dragon to put on his boots and wait to hear from the effervescent bluerider and his dragon.

T’bia was in a better state of mind than his new friend, if only because it hadn’t occurred to him that he should be fretting about what to wear. Indeed, he’d risen in the morning and put on an outfit that was neither here nor there on the scale of ‘special outing’ clothing. A pair of sturdy hide pants, his riding boots, and a clean but hardly fancy shirt, the laces at his chest tied a little on the loose side and a belt holding his pants up, shirt tucked in with enough loose to flop over slightly. He felt he looked decent enough, and it didn’t occur to him that he should wear something fancy to the hold, any more than it occurred to him to worry what M’dox might think of his outfit.

When T’bia judged it was a good time to meet up and head off to the Hold, he had Jycenth reach out to Riquarth, petting the young blue dragon’s nose affectionately as he relayed the message. “Do they need time to get ready?” He asked, moving away from his dragon to fetch his riding straps.

It sounds as if they are ready and waiting, Jycenth said softly, shifting his bulk around, lifting one arm and the other to assist T’bia as much as he could so the young man could put the straps on him, cinching each one firmly and securely. We should not keep them waiting. Come, love, let’s go. T’bia smiled excitedly as he scrambled up Jycenth’s side – he still had not gotten the hang of mounting smoothly – and latched himself in.

“Will they meet us in the air?” They will, the blue affirmed, sending the request to Riquarth. I will relay the image of where we are betweening to, also. Normally, a higher ranking dragon would be the one relaying such an image, but since Riquarth hadn’t been it seemed obvious to Jycenth that it would be he who instructed the brown. T’bia, oblivious to all things, was no less aware of this breech of etiquette than he was anything else.

Jycenth circled in the air until Riquarth and his rider joined them, then shared the image of their destination with the brown, making sure it was clear and crisp. He would not be responsible for them getting lost between! Checking with T’bia, Jycenth took a deep breath, and then they vanished into the blackness of between. Both rider and dragon kept mental contact for the few brief moments before sunlight erupted around them. T’bia breathed a heavy sigh of relief; there was something terrifying about between travel, no matter how often he did it.

Jycenth floated almost lazily towards the Hold Square, which was big enough for dragons to land in, when it wasn’t occupied by Gather stalls. He landed lightly, tucking his wings in and crouching so that T’bia could slide off to land with a stumble, before straightening and grinning excitedly at M’dox, wringing his hands together as he bounced slightly on the balls of his feet.

When Riquarth got the summons from Jycenth, he nudged his rider gently with his noise, drawing him out of the daze of waiting. Simultaneously, he sent a confirmation to the blue dragon, stating that they were ready whenever the other pair were.

Jycenth says they're ready to go. The brown related to M'dox, who stared blankly at the dragon for a few moments. Realization dawning on him, he squeaked in a very undignified fashion.

“He did? So, they still want us to go to the Hold with them? Really?” He exclaimed, standing up as Riquarth shifted as he prepared to stand. He rolled his faceted eyes in an imitation of the common human expression, though the emotion he sent to his bonded was pure fondness.

They do, so you best get ready to fly. Riquarth said, pushing himself to his feet proper and positioning himself so M’dox could easily reach to attach the riding straps properly.

As M’dox double checked all the straps, Riquarth received the request to meet in the air, to which he sent back a quick word of agreement.

Time to fly, M’dox. He said, stretching his wings and bowing a little to allow his rider better access to mount. M’dox hesitated a moment, before pulling himself up and swinging a leg over the broad neck of his dragon.

“Where are we meeting them?” Asked M’dox, curious.

Above. Riquarth replied as he launched himself out of the weyr. It only took the brown a few moments to attain enough altitude to reach Jycenth, remaining a dragonlength or so below the blue. He graciously accepted the image of the Hold, sharing the image with M’dox through their bond. The pair waited a few moments to allow Jycenth to arrive at the Hold before slipping between themselves. Riquarth was meticulous about betweening, careful to always allow space around him, and after the few moments of intense cold they reappeared above and behind Jycenth, and they got their first look at Telgar Hold.

M’dox gasped aloud. ’It’s so much bigger than back home.” He said to Riquarth, amazed by how much more filled the space was than the cothold where he grew up. Riquarth wasn’t overly impressed, and said as much, to which M’dox laughed out loud.

Soon, they were landing in the Hold Square, Riquarth kicking up a bit of dust as he touched down. M’dox was half out of the riding straps before his dragon had all four feet on the ground, so excited to finally be in the Hold.

“It’s enormous!” He said, rushing over to T’bia, awe clear in his face and voice. “Do you have any idea how many people live here?”

“It is, isn’t it?!” T’bia responded enthusiastically, grinning broadly as he took delight in M’dox’s delight. It was rare that T’bit got to be around someone who was more excited about something than he was, and he found it to be highly enjoyable. One of your many charms, Bibi, is your delight in the world around you. I am glad you find the trait enjoyable in others. Jycenth crooned gently, blowing warm breath over T’bia’s head as he greeted Riquarth properly with a chirp. Rustling his wings, he took to the skies once more, landing on a roof not far away. While Jycenth enjoyed the children of the Weyr, he wasn’t too fond of being poked, prodded and stared at by Holderfolk; it made him uncomfortably aware of his size… Humans were so small!

T’bia turned from watching Jycenth relocate, to grin at his brownrider companion. “What do you want to do first?” He asked, bouncing on the balls of his feet once more. “Food? Gifts? Clothing? Drinks?” They could do so many things! However, the main question was, what would M’dox like to do first? “There are other things, too!” T’bia added, in case those options did not appeal to M’dox or he had something else in mind. He waited with a wide smile and open, friendly face for the brownrider to determine their first course of action.

As M'dox continued to look around with wide eyes, nodding in response to T'bia's comment, Riquarth reciprocated Jycenth's greeting and followed him. He assumed the other dragon knew the correct protocols to follow when in the Hold. Riquarth was, however, a bit dubious about the ability of some of these structures to hold his weight. The brown made sure to land on a different roof from Jycenth, near enough to the blue dragon for easy conversation but not so close he would worry to much about structural instability.

Are you sure we won't break these? He asked Jycenth, mild concern in his tone.

M'dox, meanwhile, was overwhelmed by the options. He didn't know anything about the Hold, why should he choose? T'bia knew more about their options than he did, and he told the other rider so.

"Ah, I don't know? Anything? You know this place better than I do." He paused considering. "Actually, maybe not clothing first. At some point, I would like to look at clothing but I'd rather not spend all my marks on our first stop." M'dox laughed lightly and rubbed the back of his head a little embarrassed. He had no self control when it came to clothing. He bit his lip, thinking back on their first conversation a few days ago. "You mentioned bakeries you liked? Maybe we could start there? I could eat a pastry about now." Or five, considering he'd been too nervous that morning to take more than a bite or two of anything in the way of breakfast. Riquarth had gently scolded him about it, but hadn't really been able to do anything about it beyond voice his disapproval. But now that they were here maybe he could eat more easily.

"Is, uh, is that good?" M'dox asked, glancing up at T'bia.

Jycenth tilted his head, thoughtfully considering the question that had been asked of him. They haven’t yet, he finally answered, wondering about it now himself. He’d been landing on buildings for as long as T’bia could remember, though most of those buildings had been the sturdy and dragon-proof buildings of Katila. He just hadn’t considered that the buildings in the North might not cater to his weight. He shrugged, a motion he’d picked up from T’bia, and decided not to worry about it. After all, like he’d said, they hadn’t yet.

T’bia laughed. “Yes, but I’ve been everywhere,” he teased, grinning. “You pick something and I’ll take you to the best places!” It seemed quite straight forward to the young bluerider, and his smile was lazy and bright. It widened when M’dox continued with his train of thought, the bluerider giggling behind a hand when his brownrider companion admitted to being a bit of a clothing shopaholic. “Okay, no clothing yet,” he agreed, amused. T’bia loved clothing himself, so he had nothing against spending the majority of their time around the clothing stores and stalls, but there was a lot of other things in the Hold to do and see!

“Okay!” Food was always a winner, and T’bia had a great sweet tooth for dessert pastries! Grinning, he grabbed M’dox by the hand and took off at a trot, weaving through people and past bright stalls as he beelined for his favourite bakery; it wasn’t until they were just outside it that he slowed down and finally stopped, letting go of M’dox’s hand as he turned to beam at the brownrider. “This place is the best!” He beamed, pushing the door open and stepping into a small family owned store, filled with delicious pastries, breads, cakes and other delicious baked goods.

“What do you want? My treat!” T’bia had never had someone to treat before, and the idea made him feel warm and bubbly.

Riquarth hummed in response, carefully adjusting his position until he felt satisfied his weight was as evenly distributed as it was going to get. Jycenth was fairly justified in not worrying, the blue was lithe and delicate and unlikely to break a building from sitting on it. Riquarth himself, despite being around the same height and length as Jycenth, was built along much heavier lines and certainly weighed a good deal more. And Riquarth would rather not destroy some Holder's building accidentally on his rider's first visit to the Hold. He'd never be able to coax M'dox back after that!

T'bia's bright smile was contagious, and M'dox smiled shyly back when he agreed to put off the clothing stores. He was still very conscious of how T'bia reacted to everything, unable to forget how their first meeting had gone. No harm in being careful today. M'dox was so focused on trying to interpret what the other rider was thinking he almost tripped as T'bia pulled him off towards whatever bakery he had chosen as their destination, surprised as he was by the sudden movement. He managed not to fall over and bring T'bia with him (that would have been embarrassing), simply letting the other man lead him.

Soon enough he caught the scent of bread in the air and figured they were close to their destination. Within a few moments, they were headed inside a building. The shop smelled divine, reminding him a bit of the kitchens back home where he'd spent so much time as a child. M'dox took a second to close his eyes and just breathe, inhaling the warm, fragrant air. It took him a moment to register T'bia's offer, but when it did M'dox's mind snapped back to the present.

"Really?" He asked breathlessly, surprise and gratitude showing in his face. "Are you sure? I mean, you invited me here, shouldn't I get you something as thanks? I mean - I can get whatever I want?" M'dox couldn't think of the last time someone had bought something for him. His parents, sure, and a sibling on occasion, and sometimes some of the women at the Weyr would give him something in thanks for his assistance, but no one else had treated him to anything before.

“Of course!” T’bia beamed, waving happily to a plump woman who stepped forward behind the counter and watched the pair of them with what T’bia would describe as fond amusement. T’bia was a regular visitor, making the trip to the Hold just so that he could treat himself to a bubbly pie if he was in the mood. He enjoyed talking to the middle-aged woman whom he found to be friendly, warm, and companionable. She didn’t seem to mind the way his mind wandered and his foot often found its way into his mouth alongside whatever treat he was eating. “This is my friend M’dox of brown Riquarth,” T’bia introduced his friend – friend! – to the woman, who smiled in greeting at M’dox. “This is Madame Iztrella, and she makes the best bubbly pies!” T’bia leaned forward conspiringly, “But don’t tell the women in the kitchen at home!” He tossed a wink at Iztrella, before moving forward to browse what was available.

“Can I please have one of these?” T’bia asked, pointing to a sweet dessert that he was fond of, and eagerly taking it as he waited for M’dox to browse the items and choose something of his liking. T’bia himself went back to browsing, and quickly asked for a loaf of rich bread, which was wrapped up neatly before being handed to him, and a half dozen bubbly pies. They’d be cold by the time he got them home, but that was okay! He could take a couple around to R’nd and B’jin, and Jycenth had a liking for the little (to him!) treats. That would leave three for T’bia to enjoy as he pleased over the next few days. Paying for the items he’d chosen, T’bia gave over extra Marks to cover M’dox’s choices, knowing that Iztrella would keep a credit for him if M’dox chose something of a lesser value, but also that he could square the payment if he chose something more expensive.

Moving to the side, T’bia waited with a placid expression for M’dox to join him, so that he could take the brownrider to his preferred eating place; there was a lovely tree not far away that was a pleasure to sit under. Despite his mouth was watering at the promise of food, he was anxious not to rush M’dox! There was such delicious food and he wanted his friend to make a good choice!

For a few moments M’dox couldn’t help but stare at T’bia. He really was just going to buy M’dox something. They’d spent at best three hours in each other’s company and T’bia was already buying him food and - and calling him a friend, he realized as the bluerider introduced him to the shopkeeper. ’My friend, my friend, my friend. M’dox couldn’t help but smile a bit stupidly at how happy he was to be considered a friend.

“Hello, ma’am.” He greeted Madame Iztrella politely. “I am excited to try your delicious looking wares. Thank you for having us today.”

While T’bia started ordering items, M’dox looked at all the baked goods on display, overwhelmed by the selection. There were lots of options for food at the Weyr, but they usually didn’t have such a huge selection each day. The variety of food here was honestly astounding to him. There were pastries he recognized from the Weyr cooking, as well as some he recognized from growing up. One reminded him of something his mother made, except a bit puffier and lighter. M’dox figured the bakery used finer flour than what his family had access to in their cothold. He spent a few minutes looking at each option before deciding on the puffy pastry like the ones his mother made. Once the pastry was wrapped and handed over, M’dox thanked Madame Iztrella, and upon being assured his food had already been paid for, turned to find T’bia. M’dox gently cradled the pastry in his hands, careful to keep it as perfect as possible for when he got to eat it.

“Are we eating here, or…?” He asked his friend - friend - glancing around, having noticed there wasn’t much in the way of seating inside the bakery itself.

T’bia turned from where he had been staring absently out the window, daydreaming, while he waited for M’dox, to look at his friend. He smiled broadly at the wrapped pastry in his companions hands. “Nope!” He chirped, bright and delighted to move their adventure on to the next stage. Turning to Madam Iztrella, T’bia waved cheerfully before re-arranging his collection in his hands and tilting his head at M’dox. “Come on!” Smiling happily, M’dox skipped out the door and waited (im)patiently on the path outside for the brownrider to join him.

“This way!” He chirped once more. The autumn weather was fresh and inviting; neither too cold nor too warm. The breeze was probably a bit chilly for most people, but T’bia wasn’t concerned with it, dressed as he was in dragonrider leathers and with the warmth of having a friend keeping him bouncing on his toes as he lead the way down the road to a small park space not far away. It was filled with a handful of large trees, grass blanketed across the ground and a couple of benches set to one side. It wasn’t a big area – it wouldn’t fit even a green dragon – but it was beautiful and comfortable. Ignoring the benches, T’bia lead M’dox to his favourite tree, and settled himself cross legged on the ground. He grinned up at M’dox.

“Have a seat!” He said brightly, setting his wares down to one side, and his chosen treat before him. “This is my favourite spot to sit when I come to get treats from the bakery,” he explained, stretching his legs out from their folded position to sprawl before him. “No one really seems to come here, especially now it is cooling down, so we probably won’t have to share with anyone else.” He beamed, pleased with himself and his special spot.

M'dox had to hurry a bit to keep up with T'bia -- did the bluerider always move this fast, or was food that good of a motivator? He looked around at the park they arrived in, frowning for a moment at the trees. One of his brothers had described the large Holds like Telgar as having no real plantlife, not like their farm, but here were several good sized trees. The Hold continued to surprise him. M'dox followed T'bia over to one of the trees, carefully settling himself on the ground while keeping careful hold on his pastry. Imagine if he dropped it! Well, he'd still probably eat it, it had been a gift after all and it was wrapped and wouldn't truly be dirty, but it would be embarrassing.

"It's very nice." M'dox said honestly in response to T'bia's explanation of the space. "Are there a lot of places like this in the Hold?" He asked, "I didn't think there would be so many trees here." The lack of other people also surprised him. He'd always heard about how many people were in Holds, and even though they could still hear some of the sounds of the Hold in the little park, they were muffled and he couldn't see any other people. The angle M'dox sat at did not face the park entrance, so he didn't even see people walking by. It was much more isolated than he expected anything in Telgar to be like. Shaking off his thoughts he began carefully unwrapping his pastry, glancing at T'bia to see if he had started eating yet. M'dox assumed they were here to eat the food, but he didn't want to start before T'bia did. It seemed... rude, maybe? Presumptuous? Something like that. "Thank you again for the pastry, I'm really excited to try it." He told his friend earnestly, hands nervously playing with the edges of the paper used to hold the food. "What were you thinking of doing next?"

“I don’t think so,” T’bia said, thinking for a moment on the question that had been asked of him. “I haven’t really explored it much, though. I know there is a big garden in the Hold proper. It’s very pretty though I’ve only been once. I guess there are probably more trees around. R’nd says it is because the Holder’s don’t think Thread is coming back, but I think it will. I hope it doesn’t,” he said softly, looking down briefly before flashing a worried look at M’dox, “but I think it will.” After all, if there was never going to be Threadfall again, what was the point in there being dragonriders? They certainly had to have a greater purpose in life than playing ferry for Holders who didn’t want to use a horse to get from one place to another!

T’bia beamed. “You’re welcome! Those are really nice!” He’d tried pretty much everything in the bakery by now, though he had a few definite favourites that he preferred to purchase when he dropped by, he also enjoyed trying the new things when they came out (he’d been told some food was even seasonal!). Despite all that, he couldn’t pass up his absolute favourite treat when visiting the Hold with his newest friend. He grinned, and turned his attention to his own pastry. Retrieving it from the package, he held it reverently and lifted it in a mock toast before biting into it happily.

Laughing, T’bia turned the tables back, licking pastry crumbs off his lips. “That’s up to you!” he said cheerfully. Like he had said earlier, he had already been everywhere and done everything! All M’dox had to do was pick what he wanted to do and T’bia would make sure he had the best time actually doing it! T’bia was honestly just glad they had gotten to eat first! He had not had much to eat earlier that day, primarily due to nerves, but now they were in the Hold and things were going smoothly, he made short work of his treat and set about cleaning his fingers before wiping them on the grass beside him.

“There are some really nice gift shops, if you want something for someone but don’t know what. Or there are a lot of great clothing stalls and shops, um, there is a great place that sells rugs – I’ve got a couple on the floor at home – and um, that’s all I can think of right this second!” Smiling bashfully, T’bia fiddled with his fingers and then looked up again, eyes wide and expectant as he waited to see what it was M’dox would like to do next.

As soon as T’bia started eating M’dox took a bite of his own pastry, humming in appreciation. It was similar to the ones he remembered from childhood, but flakier. He thought it might also be sweeter, but it was hard to tell. M’dox tried to savor the treat, but it was still gone far quicker than he had planned. He sighed contentedly, licking the remaining sugar dust off his fingers, determined to get as much out of the pastry as he possibly could.

“Uhm,” M’dox started, considering the options. “It would make sense to do gifts next, so we actually have money for them.” He laughed a bit in self deprecation. “I know if we did clothing next I’d spend all my marks there, and I really should pick up a few things for people.” His family, namely, to have on hand for whenever he got around to seeing them. M’dox was unsure when that might be; the idea of seeing them was both really exciting and made him happy, but also scared him a lot. Would they be happy to see him? How had they changed? He carefully folded the wrapper of his pastry, focusing back on the present and not his family. “That work?” He asked, firmly creasing the last fold.

You can fast forward through gift shopping a bit if you want, might get tedious otherwise. Up to you. (Clothes shopping could be fun though ;p)

“That sounds good to me!” T’bia said cheerfully, though he likely would not have objected even if M’dox had proclaimed he was having a terrible time and wanted to go home. He would have felt like a failure, and he would have been miserable about ruining his new friend’s first experience of the Hold, but he would not have objected. T’bia just was not the type of person to go against the flow. That said, he was genuinely happy that M’dox had a plan of action, and that it sounded like a good one!

Springing to his feet, T’bia bounced on the spot before offering a hand to help M’dox onto his own feet. Once his friend was up and beside him, T’bia lead the way back to their dragons, mostly so that he could leave his extra treats with Jycenth and they could stow their trash rather than lugging it around. Giving his dragon a pat as he gingerly took off to find somewhere roomier to curl up and nap while the young men explored, T’bia glanced at M’dox and grinned, before leading the way at a fast, bouncing walk.

“Gifts first!” He said, and lead the way. They spent as much time as they needed to in each of the stores, picking things up and showing them to each other and doing their best not to break things or get into trouble by the shop owners. T’bia himself found a couple of small gifts for an assortment of people – primarily R’nd and he even found something for B’jin! – but he also had a lot of fun just spending time with M’dox, and talking with him and laughing. T’bia was beaming happily as he once more lead them to where their dragons appeared to collect their wares so they could continue shopping some more.

Still bouncing, buoyed along by his good mood and good company, T’bia lead M’dox to his favourite clothing store – they had a kind of selection of generic clothing. However, they also tailor made clothing that T’bia was embarrassed by the idea of admitting how much time he had spent in the store being measured and fitted for outfits he didn’t get to wear nearly enough, simply because he had too many of them!

“In here!” He grinned, holding the door open for M’dox, beyond excited to see what the brownrider thought of the inside of the store.

M’dox pocketed the pastry wrapping and reached up to grab T’bia’s offered hand, using it to steady himself as he stood up. “Thanks.” He said, before following T’bia out of the small park. They reunited with their dragons, since T’bia wanted to leave the extra food he bought with Jycenth.

While T’bia was packing up the food in the packs on Jycenth, M’dox leaned against Riquarth a bit surreptitiously, a little overwhelmed by everything. He was having a good time! T’bia was super nice, even buying him a pastry! It was going real well! And it was slightly scary. M’dox hadn’t really done ‘friends’ very much, and the weird swooping feeling in his chest was partially happiness at hanging out with a new friend and partially terrible nervousness. Riquarth gently leaned back into where M’dox was, reassuring his rider that being nervous was fine, he just shouldn’t let the fear get in the way of having a nice day with T’bia. M’dox smiled and rubbed his dragon’s shoulder affectionately. ’It’s a good thing one of us is sensible about things.’ Riquarth snorted. You should believe that sentiment more often. He said, getting up to follow Jycenth to find a new dragon-suitable resting place. M’dox smiled after them, before hurrying after T’bia.

The next few stores passed in a blur of laughter and trinkets. M’dox had never seen stores with this much variety before, or ones that had so many items just for fun or decoration. He’d mostly just been to the general farm supply store back home, and this was very different. M’dox couldn’t resist picking up and inspecting every little think that caught his eye. There were a few close calls where he almost dropped or broke something, and each one made his heart stop for a moment. M’dox felt a little better when T’bia almost broke things too; at least he wasn’t the only one. By the end of their whirlwind gift shop tour, M’dox had picked up some gifts for his parents and one of his brothers, and a couple generic toys for his nieces and nephews, more than he was sure he needed — what if more had been born while he’d been away?

The clothing shop stole M’dox’s breath the moment he stepped through the door. He looked back at T’bia, who entered after him, wide eyed in amazement. There were so many clothes! So many colors and styles! He had been looking forward to this. M’dox really did like clothing, but so far he’d mostly had things made by his mother or secondhand from the Weyr. The idea of buying new, just for him clothing was exciting. Immediately he was drawn towards a rack of brightly colored scarves. M’dox ran his hand through the soft garments, stopping to pull one out to show T’bia.

“This one matches Jycenth, don’t you think?” He asked, holding the scarf out for his friend to see.

T’bia turned at the sound of Jycenth’s name, having been poking through a rack of nice jackets, looking for something new that would be suitable for gathers and so such. He had some nice clothing – R’nd had taken him on his first real shopping trip since the return – but he wanted to add to his collection, and he felt he had a nice grasp of what he liked and what was good. With the two things combined, he decided to give shopping for himself a chance. He could totally find a nice outfit!

Blinking at M’dox, T’bia’s blue gaze shifted to the scarf the brownrider was holding up, and his eyes widened and he grinned suddenly. “Oh wow! It really does!” moving quickly, he joined M’dox at the scarves, and gently ran his fingers over the material of the one M’dox was holding, eyeing it thoughtfully. His dragon’s colouration was unique, but more so among the dragon population, rather than the dye jobs of materials. Indeed, T’bia had found that a lot of dye casters seemed to enjoy starting with one colour and melding it into another – either shade or colour entirely.

“Do you mind if I buy it?” T’bia asked, looking up from the scarf to meet M’dox’s eye. The scarf was really lovely, and T’bia would find it fun to wear, kind of like an inside joke, especially when Jycenth himself wasn’t around to give away the reason for his enjoyment of it! “We should see if there is one that’ll match Riquarth!” He said suddenly, eyes widening in delight at the idea and, forgetting the Jycenth-scarf for the moment, scuttled down the row until he found the section of various shades of brown.

M’dox grinned when T’bia agreed the scarf matched Jycenth. He had a pretty good eye for colors, but he didn’t know Jycenth that well, so it was nice that the dragon’s rider, who saw Jycenth every day, agreed with him. He carefully held it out for T’bia to examine, adjusting his hold on it so T’bia could see all of it.

“Of course!” M’dox said quickly, giving T’bia an affirmative nod. It’s not like he had a reason to buy a scarf that looked like Jycenth. In fact, that would almost certainly be a little weird, especially now that he had pointed it out to T’bia! At the suggestion they look for a Riquarth-scarf, M’dox blinked for a moment as he was left with the blue scarf and T’bia started looking through the brown scarves. He headed over to join the bluerider, carefully looping the blue scarf around T’bia’s neck.

“Here. Since you’re getting it.” M’dox said, not making eye contact as he too started looking at the brown scarves. After a few minutes, the two of them managed to find a scarf M’dox deemed suitably similar to Riquarth, a lighter brown with darker brown flower designs on it. M’dox thought the pattern was pretty, even if it wasn’t overly ‘Riquarth’ in style, and the colors matched pretty well. He didn’t want to spend the entire time in the store buying a scarf for himself, especially since he still wanted to get a gift for a family member or two, so he decided to just get it, and showed the winning scarf to T’bia.

After hearing T'bia's response to the winning scarf, M'dox meandered along the wall, poking through the racks. There were a couple shawls his mother might like, a bit finer that what he knew she had or could buy at home. He chose a light pink one with blue flowers embroidered around the edges. Reds and pinks were a bit harder to come by in cotholds, so something like this would be some nice finery for her.

Folding the shawl and resting it over his arm with the scarf, another garment caught his eye. It was a long skirt, done in blue and grey, that brought forward a memory. He pulled the flowing skirt from the rack to get a better look at it. The skirt he remembered had been one of Enfrai's, a favorite of hers. She'd refused to give it over to the rag bag when she grew too tall to wear it, and instead held onto the heavily patched skirt and made him wear it. A lot. Apparently, if she couldn't wear it she still wanted to see it being worn. The one in the shop was hardly identical, but it was reminiscent enough of it that, were he to get it for her, she would likely know what it was a reference to.

"What do you think?" M'dox asked T'bia, holding the skirt up against himself to check the length, smoothing a fold out so the measurement would be more accurate. A few breaths later, he realized what he was implying and blushed heavily, rushing his words to explain. "My sister is about my height. This would probably fit her, right?"

T’bia flashed a grin at M’dox when the other rider joined him, and the blue scarf was looped around his neck. “Thanks!” He added, realising he’d been distracted, again, and run off before the previous conversation was actually completed. He really did need to work on that… T’bia beamed when M’dox decided on a scarf that would match his dragon, the young bluerider finding the fact that they had matching dragon scarfs from their adventure rather a good sign for their budding friendship! He was sentimental like that.

Looking up when T’bia heard M’dox’s voice, he turned to find the brownrider standing with a skirt held against him and a questioning look on his face. T’bia blinked, not having expected such an image when he turned around, but he smiled brightly. “It’s lovely!” It was, too, and the idea of M’dox wearing it, while strange, wasn’t the strangest thought that had ever crossed T’bia’s mind and he didn’t see any reason to laugh at his new friend if he liked wearing skirts. Honestly, most of the women T’bia knew seemed to enjoy wearing them so there had to be a reason why, right? Comfort, probably, though T’bia himself had never worn a skirt so he didn’t know. Maybe he’d ask Rhaedalyn.

“Oh,” T’bia responded to M’dox’s blushing addon, blinking again. He shrugged. “It’s still lovely!” He paused and considered M’dox for a moment. “Is she built similar to you?” He asked, taking in M’dox’s height and hip. “If she has wide hips it might not fit, but you’re right about the length.” While T’bia had no training in such things, he had spent his childhood and life since repairing clothing so he didn’t feel like he was wearing pure rags. He wasn’t as good as K’rin (but who was?) but it was something he had an uncommon confidence in and his serious expression and unusually considered words indicated as much.

At that moment M’dox’s brain seemed to have halted, overrun with the many thoughts and emotions whirling through it. He hadn’t meant to imply the skirt was for him, but it definitely had initially looked like that. So that prompted a fun combination of embarrassment and fear — mostly the fear, really — which made him blush and stammer out an explantation. And yet —and yet — the way T’bia said “It’s still lovely” meant that the first time he’d said “It’s lovely” was referring to it on him, not his sister. Which was…well, unexpected to say the least. The maxim ‘men do not wear skirts’ had been very clearly taught to M’dox, but apparently T’bia hadn’t been taught the same thing. Was that a Weyr thing, or just a T’bia thing? M’dox leaned towards the latter, as if it were a Weyr thing he should have seen at least one man in a skirt by now, but he hadn’t.

He wished he had.

To be perfectly honest, most of the dress and skirt wearing he’d done as a child had been Enfrai’s choice, not his. M’dox knew, had always known, that he could have stopped her if he wanted. But he hadn’t stopped her, not once. Not even the times she’d convinced him to wear skirts after their father’s ultimatum on the topic — he’d found out on the fourth time, and they’d gotten a stern talking to. Enfrai had never broached the topic again after that, and M’dox had never been brave enough to wear them on his own, without using her encouragement as an excuse, a crutch.

And it’s not like he’d spent the past ten turns wishing he were always in a skirt either. Pants were great; practical, comfortable, easy to move in, and not going to get him beat up behind a barn. It’s just sometimes, on occasion, M’dox would remember and wonder. Wonder and wish that he wasn't so afraid or people weren’t so horribly judgmental and maybe, just maybe, he could do things because he liked them and not because he was afraid.

Eventually M’dox managed to put his thoughts into some semblance of order, after what felt like ages and was barely more than a few heartbeats. Still blushing exceptionally red, he managed to respond to T’bia’s questions.

“She probably has more hip than I do, I assume anyway, but not too much, last I saw her. My whole family is pretty slight.” M’dox said, looking back down at the skirt. “This one’s pretty loose and it sits at the waist, so it should be forgiving on wider hips, I think.” He bit his lip, considering what to say next. Riquarth, who had taken notice at his rider’s sudden spike of fear of a few moments ago, sent gentle encouragement to M’dox, gently pushing him to speak instead of hiding.

“Do you… do you really think it’d look good on me?” He asked hesitantly, voice barely a whisper in the quiet hum of the store, but loud enough T’bia could probably hear it. It sounded loud enough to M’dox, an admission of a flaw that made him a target, made him lesser (Never. Riquarth snarled at the thought, reassuring M’dox he was worthy and his.). The amount of vulnerability he was showing honestly surprised M’dox. Not that he constantly exuded confidence or anything, far from it, but as a rule he didn’t go around showing the parts of himself he tried hardest to hide.
