Quilriana waited as Xyreith sniffed her son, or stared deep inside him, or whatever it was dragons did when they were Searching. She knew her son was worthy and could one day be a wonderful dragonrider himself but first they needed official proof and a dragon's word was counted as just that. Sure, Xyreith wasn't technically a Search dragon since he was a bronze and it was greens and blues that were traditionally the ones that brought in Candidates. But R'nya said he would help give Quinvalis a better life in the Weyr and a proper way in was the best way, so Xyreith was throwing in his opinion since bronze dragon and rider alike could do such a thing when they found someone interesting.

When Xyreith seemed finished and gave his verdict, Quilriana held her breath. It wouldn't be much of a birthday gift if he didn't think Quinvalis was worth Searching. It'd only serve to get his hopes up and dash them in a matter of moments. They had discussed this possibility and Quilriana didn't want them lying to her son and saying he was acceptable when he wasn't. Besides, dragons couldn't lie and she didn't think Xyreith would even if he could. Her eyes fluttered shut, not at all able to bear seeing what came next.

Moments passed before she heard Quinvalis' simple one questioning word of 'really?' that had her daring to look. The first thing she sought out was R'nya to see his reaction. There was the faintest hint of a smile on his lips which she took to mean something positive. A glance at her son showed him positively glowing and Quilriana allowed herself to smile as well.

"Well then, I think it's time for a celebratory meal."

~~~~~~~
After the evening meal had been cleaned up and Quilriana sent her daughter off to get ready for a bath before bed and fiddled with the dish cloth as she finished drying the last plate. She had a gift for her son but she didn't know if he'd want it or want to accept it front of R'nya. She knew Quinvalis looked up to the bronzerider, not that she could blame him or even minded. R'nya was a good role model when it came to manners, professionalism, and caring for his own kids. In truth, she was kind of the only flaw R'nya had and even in most circles having a lover on the side wouldn't be frowned upon. Still, she didn't want her son to pick up all of R'nya's habits.
Setting the towel down, Quilriana finally made up her mind and decided it was a mother's job to lightly embarrass her children and waited until Quinvalis finished refilling R'nya's glass of wine -- though the man, as usual had been nursing his drink and it was only a small top up -- before suggesting they move outside for a bit of air and away from the noise that was coming from the front of the tavern as men continued to drink into the night.
Once outside, she gave a subtle wave to R'nya, ushering him a few feet away from a moment. "Quinvalis, my sweet baby boy," her hands cradled both sides of his face as she took in every feature on his face and smiled gently. "I have a gift for you, both or your birthday and for becoming a Candidate." Letting go of his face, Quilriana reached behind her neck and unclasped the necklace that she rarely took off. It had been her mother's and was given to her when she was young and it was one of her few treasures outside of her children. It wasn't much; a simple chain and a small red gem, but it was enough for her.
As she placed it in Quinvalis' palm that she had told him to hold out, Quilriana smiled brightly though tears threatened to spill free, "I am so proud of you, Quin. You're becoming a fine young man and soon you'll be a dragonrider, of that I have no doubt. Fort will be such a wonderful opportunity for you."
Quinvalis stared at the necklace he held in the palm of one hand. His mother had told him to close his eyes and hold one out. A moment later, he felt something drop into it and he slowly opened his eyes to see the familiar piece of jewellery that seemed so odd now that it wasn't around his mother's neck. In truth, it wasn't anything special, but to him, it was the most amazing thing he had seen. It was a simple silver chain of decent thickness that made it sturdy enough to last the wear and tear of decades and dangling from it was a small beautiful deep red stone. He knew the simple tale that went with the piece; it was given to his mother by his grandmother when she was betrothed to his father and it seemed like Quilriana had always cherished it and fiddled with it when she was lost in thought or humming to herself while they were on a picnic with his little sister and R'nya.
He was confused for a moment as to why it was now in his hands and one look at the tears threatening to spill from Quilriana's eyes made it clear what the intention was. However, before he could give it back and say he couldn't take such a treasure -- his grandma had died years before and they didn't have much in sentimental value of her -- his mother spoke and all protests died instantly.
She was proud of him and the future being Searched would give him and that tiny red gem was a piece of her heart that he was to take with him so she'd always be near. He was a man of thirteen years now and men didn't cry, especially not in front of their role model. A quick glance at R'nya showed the bronzerider still nearby but whether or not he was listening was hard to say. A flush stained Quinvalis' cheeks at realizing the older man likely heard everything and his reputation had probably just died before he even stepped a foot onto Fort Weyr soil. Then again, R'nya had been around them for years and he knew his mom well and how she was with her kids. The fact that R'nya never said anything bad about him or his mom and sister made the bronzerider even cooler in his eyes.
Not risking words as he was worried he'd stumble over the gratitude or burst into tears, Quinvalis nodded his understanding with a small smile and slipped the necklace on. Once it was resting high on his chest, almost in line with his heart, a larger smile showed as he looked down at it, liking the view. After a few moments of admiring it, however, Quinvalis tucked it under his shirt, murmuring something about not wanting it to get dirty or fall off. It'd be safe under his shirt and he liked the new sensation of it hanging on his neck and resting directly against his skin. He'd never take the necklace off, fully believing it to be a part of his mother's heart with the warmth and comfort it brought him.
As he turned to go pack -- he had told R'nya he wanted to head out as soon as possible since his excitement wouldn't let him rest in his own bed after knowing he'd been Searched and was a step closer to bonding to a dragon of his own -- Quilriana's words finally hit him. His mom was proud of him. She likely didn't know how much that meant to him. She had always been there for him, especially after his dad died, and he wanted to work just as hard as she had for him and prove it wasn't wasted.
His smile stayed in place as he disappeared back inside the tavern to head to his tiny room and pack. His mother was proud and it was a wonderful feeling.
Xyreith was not particularly impressed that he was expected to play Searcher. That was something lesser colours were supposed to do, and besides, what did he know about Searching? Despite that, it was important to R’nya, and that meant Xyreith – grumbling the whole time – pretended to be a Search dragon. He sniffed the child that was set down before him, and blew warm breath of air over him. He liked the children well enough, and was used to seeing them. But still, that didn’t make him a Search dragon! Xyreith turned to look at R’nya, and gave the equivalent of a mental shrug; he had no idea. R’nya, bless him, flashed a smile at Quinvalis as if Xyreith had promised the child would Impress a bronze. Humans.
R’nya felt a little bad about being so misleading, but he felt it was for the best. Bronze dragons weren’t Searchers, and while he had told both Quilriana and Quinvalis this, they both seemed to feel that Xyreith could at least give him the tick of approval. Xyreith hadn’t done any such thing, but they didn’t need to know that. The chances were pretty good Quinvalis would Impress at some point, if he Stood regularly enough, and R’nya had no doubt the child could do well on the Sands. Worst case scenario, he had about ten years before the kid aged out, and well, he’d deal with that if it happened. Xyreith snorted, before shuffling off to curl up and sleep while he waited for R’nya to finish socialising.
Standing slightly back from his companions outside, R’nya lifted his chin to enjoy the gentle breeze, looking as if he were not paying attention, but subtly could be his, and he was avidly aware of what was going on between the woman and her son. The exchange of the necklace was sweet, and R’nya smiled to himself before moving up behind Quilriana, wrapping his arms lightly around her waist as the youngster went inside to pack. R’nya kissed the side of Quilriana’s neck, nuzzling against her contentedly.
“He will do wonderfully, and we will bring him home for visits.”
Quilriana leaned back against R’nya and smiled softly at the kiss to her cheek while she rested her hands atop those at her waist. “You better,” her tone was light but she was still fighting with herself over what was best for her son versus best for her heart. She didn’t want to have her son so far away from her and she hated separating her children when they got along surprisingly well given their ages and interests. It’d be so easy to put a stop to all of it and tell Quinvalis he couldn’t go after all but he’d be crushed and if he didn’t show his anger, he’d keep it bottled up inside and never forgive her and Quilriana knew she couldn’t live with that.
"Thank you again for doing this. And thanks to you as well, Xyreith," she knew the bronze dragon wasn’t built for Searching but his approval was good enough for the purposes of getting Quinvalis out and to somewhere that would have more of a future for him. Whether the dragon even said a word to R’nya about the qualities her boy possessed or even that he liked the way Quinvalis wore matching socks would likely never be known and Quilriana didn’t see the need to probe. She knew her son was worthy of a dragon of his own, even if it took multiple hatchings to find his mate.
Still, there was one other nagging worry that she couldn’t let go of and Quilriana turned in R’nya’s hold so she could look up at the bronzerider to help her read him better. He wasn’t always the best at lying if the signs were caught quickly enough and she didn’t want him lying to her about this when it involved the safety of one or both of her children. She lightly placed her hand over his heart, knowing how dear the subject at hand was to him and showing in her own way that she still understood and didn’t mind where his heart was or that she shared the wonderful rider.
"You still believe this is fine, right? I don't want to cause Rhaedalyn any undue stress."
“It is our pleasure, Quilriana. I have no doubt that he will make a solid dragonrider.” He smiled gently, resting his cheek against the side of her head, enjoying the softness of her hair against his skin and letting the world around them fade a little as he zoned out. As a result, he was slightly startled when Quilriana suddenly turned in his arms, looking up at him seriously. R’nya blinked down at her, and raised one eyebrow in his trademark manner, one corner of his lips twitching slightly, fondly amused.
R’nya blinked, tilting his head slightly at her question. “Of course.” A pause. “Why would Rhaedalyn mind?” He was genuinely confused, the foreign expression drawing his eyebrows together and creating wrinkles in his features that weren’t there any other time. He was almost amused that Quilriana would worry about Rhaedalyn – Rhaedalyn – being upset about another child running around. After all, she had practically stolen Varlea from Indivara, and he was sure she’d love nothing more than to have a whole army of sturdy little toddlers making trouble. To be honest, he wouldn’t mind an army of sturdy little toddlers… R’nya shook his head slightly, and considered Quilriana seriously.
“I am fairly sure Rhaedalyn would adopt him, and all the other children in the crèche, the candidate barracks, and the weyrling barracks, if she could get away with it. The boy is probably lucky he’s outside the age of adoption.” He smiled wryly. “Why do you ask?” That genuine confusion was back, and R’nya studied his lover’s face as he waited for her to reply, wondering what had caused the line of conversation. He had no doubt that Quilriana was worried about Quinvalis fitting in – R’nya would do what he could to help the boy, but he had a feeling he’d meld in fairly easily – but he wasn’t sure where the angle about Rhaedalyn came from…
R’nya was clever and they had enjoyed many deep and meaningful conversations over the years but the man was dense when it came to Rhaedalyn. Quilriana still remembered the night they had met and how it had ended up turning into an escape for them both with meeting for sex, yes, but they also just enjoyed each other’s company. She hadn’t been looking for anything; as a widow with children that was also kicked off her farm, she didn’t think she’d be looked upon fondly as a wife again and she found she didn’t need a husband to function. But when they started talking more about personal affairs, like his golden girls and Rhaedalyn specifically, Quilriana noticed something interesting. R’nya just couldn’t see logic where Rhaedalyn was concerned. She had helped the man over the years with ideas for gifts or even gave him ideas when he was baffled over a situation. It was rather fun to solve, like a puzzle she liked doing with her kids.
So it didn’t surprise her that R’nya missed the point entirely. Then again, she also knew enough about the Weyr lifestyle from her parents’ tales and R’nya’s own take on things, that there was another factor at play. Being mated was all well and good but it didn’t stop anyone from having a lover on the side and no one thought twice about it. It had never bothered her that she was that lover but Quilriana knew it would bother Rhaedalyn if she found out she was sharing her sweet, gorgeous, and amazing in bed man.
She smiled as she patted R’nya’s cheek softly and let out a low laugh. “Oh, R’nya. I have no doubt she will adore my son. Quinvalis is kind, smart, and eager to help. I’m sure he’d even help with the girls if she asked. But that’s not what I meant,” she didn’t want to break his illusions of anything he had but Quilriana also felt it was wise to open his eyes a bit so he knew more clearly what he was doing and that it added in another layer now. Not that she was worried about her son blabbing secrets. “Won’t she think it odd that Xyreith Searched someone randomly if he’s never done that before? What makes Quin so special? What if she thinks it was done as a favour and wants to know who it was for and why?”
She slipped her arms around R’nya’s neck, one hand lightly toying with his hair, “I’m not worried and I don’t care what you end up telling her. I just don’t want her to be worried.” It was true; Rhaedalyn seemed almost too precious for the world and not for the first time Quilriana wondered how the woman ended up in Katila, Impressing, and now co-running a Weyr. It was likely how sweet she was and that other people wanted to keep her safe and happy as well.
R’nya considered Quilriana seriously, enjoying the feel of her fingers at the back of his neck, playing with his hair. He had always been fond of people playing with his hair, which was why he often found time when he was in the company of his girls to play with their hair. Especially when the women had longer hair; or unique hair such as Rhaedalyn’s beautiful curls. He was glad her hair was getting longer again; he enjoyed it immensely, especially getting lost in it when they were… R’nya blinked, and leaned forward, kissing Quilriana on the nose and setting his mind firmly back on the woman before him.
“Probably,” he didn’t seem concerned. “Bronzes do not Search – blues, and sometimes greens, do that. We can get one of the Searchers to do it officially, but Xyreith seems to think he will do fine.” Well, maybe not the exactly what Xyreith had said, but he hadn’t said the boy had a brick wall for a mind, so R’nya figured Quinvalis at least had a shot. After all, he’d seen some truly questionable young men Impress over the years, and Quinvalis was a good kid, with a great personality and he was intelligent and hardworking. R’nya didn’t know what the kid would Impress, but he’d be surprised if it wasn’t a brown or a brown. He just didn’t have that … quirk that made a man out to be a green or bluerider material. At least in R’nya’s opinion… but what did he know, really?
“If she asks, I will tell her. I will probably tell her anyway,” R’nya shrugged slightly. “She has seen you and the kids before; you have all been to the Weyr.” The bronzerider was confused about Quilriana’s apparent concern about Rhaedalyn, though he could not quite figure out the why of it all. Weyr bred and raised, it did not occur to R’nya that the woman was looking out for Rhaedalyn’s heart, or that he could cause hurt through his being in a relationship of sorts with Quilriana; he was too much a dragonrider. He would have been shocked if someone came out and told him what he was doing could be considered wrong in the eyes of others, especially the two hold-bred women he was involved with.
R’nya leaned forward again, kissing Quilriana lightly. “She will be fine, and so will Quinvalis.” Grey-blue eyes sparkled mischievously, his lips quirking just slightly with a smile. “I fully expect him to be torn between getting into all kinds of mischief with the other boys, and being the top of his class.” Candidacy was something R’nya had very fond memories of, though he had been incredibly selective about which clutch it was he would stand for, he had participated in almost every available Candidacy class, and taken notes from afar on the Weyrling groups.
Quilriana smiled and patted R’nya lightly on a cheek. He was Weyr bred and a bronzerider so of course he viewed certain differently than most men she knew. It was one of the reasons she found him so attractive and enjoyed their hours of conversations of Weyr life and politics to more mundane topics. She wasn’t going to point out that Rhaedalyn likely wouldn’t be as open to sharing as she was and that it would likely hurt her deeper than R’nya might expect if he thought about it at all. Quilriana wasn’t an expert on the goldrider but felt like she had a good grasp on how things would play out from what R’nya had shared over the years and the few meetings they had had where she observed the younger woman in action.
Letting the matter drop without another word, Quilriana danced out of R’nya’s hold when she heard her son’s quick steps racing down the stairs. She didn’t mind him seeing them together but she didn’t want to dampen his excitement for being Searched by having him eye roll at the affection. “I know he will be and I’d be more worried if he wasn’t conflicted in such matters.” She hoped her son would make friends and want to run off and cause mischief with them at times and not sit alone in a quiet room and study all the time. He was a good kid and she wanted others to see it as well.
When Quinvalis came outside, Quilriana smiled, blinking away tears as she took him in with his jacket on and two bags that held all of his belongings. "I know, I know,” she held up a hand to stop the protests that she could see forming on lips, “let me have my last mom speech. Mind your manners and don't cause any trouble. Especially for your new Weyrleader." Quilriana hugged Quinvalis close and whispered again how much she loved him and how proud she was of him. She also secretly hoped the boy's need to fit in and share the juicy gossip he had on R'nya and his mistress wouldn't overwhelm him and lead him into trouble.
For a brief moment, Quilriana debated sending him to Telgar instead of Fort. Keep him closer to her and further away from the man she was sleeping with in secret. No, it was better to have R'nya looming over him, especially since Quinvalis looked up to the bronzerider. Besides, from what R'nya had told her about D'hys over the years, the bluerider would make sure her son wasn't saying anything he shouldn't or he'd be given a swift dealing with. Though D’hys had better be careful himself if he didn’t want to deal with the wrath of a vengeful mother.
“You two better be on your way before it gets too late. I can only imagine Xyreith’s opinion if that should happen and keep him from Aradissicath any longer.”
R’nya let Quilriana out of his arms with a bemused smile, knowing what she was thinking as he heard the thundering footsteps of an excited child on the stairs. He was of half a mind to tease the youngster by sweeping his mother back up and making a show, but decided not to press Quilriana’s buttons, though he was sure she wouldn’t mind she probably wouldn’t be thrilled, either. He watched her wrap her boy up in a hug, and wondered – not for the first time – how parents could do it, let their child leave so young. He knew he was not the norm, particularly within the Weyr, but he simply could not stand being away from his daughters and the idea of fostering them off to a Hold was actually quite traumatising! He did not even like them going to crèche, not if he was going to be home to keep an eye on them!
She worries about me, the dragon snorted, speaking only to R’nya. I worry about your hide if you’re not home in time to help Rhae with bathing those miniature monsters you claim… R’nya glanced towards his dragon, covering a smile with his hand as he used the other to relieve Quinvalis of his load. “Come along, my boy. Let us get you settled on Xy so we can head home and we can find you a bunk with the other boys.” Tying the bags onto Xyreith’s straps, R’nya gave the youngster a leg up and helped him settle onto Xyreith, strapping him in securely before jumping down again and making his way back to Quilriana.
“He will be fine. I will bring him home for visits if he wishes, though he will probably shy away from ‘special treatment’,” R’nya smiled slightly. “I will drop by again soon to let you know how he is doing.” Clasping both of her hands gently in his, R’nya gave them a soft squeeze and kissed her lightly, “I am sure Quilista will thoroughly enjoy having you to herself!” Giving her hands a last gentle squeeze, R’nya released them and strode confidently back to his dragon, mounting easily behind Quinvalis and strapping himself in. Confirming with the youngster that he was ready, R’nya grinned and encouraged Xyreith into the air. Another warning was given, after the bronze had gained altitude and lingered for a moment so Quinvalis could get a good look at his home from the sky, before they vanished between, reappearing shortly thereafter above Fort Weyr.
“Welcome to your new home!” R’nya said, and Xyreith circled lazily towards the ground, letting Aradissicath know they’d be home as soon as they’d settled a new addition into the Weyr.
