While many people had opted to spread out and occupy either Fort or Ista Weyr, T’bia hadn’t been able to quite find the desire to leave Telgar. His decision to stay was only strengthened when his father told him he planned to stay there, along with the younger children. T’bia had been relieved, and it had made him wonder if he would have packed up and left, if his father had. Probably, but he was glad he had gone to the man and let him know he desired to stay. It made him feel like he’d made a solid choice, instead of following his father like a lost puppy. He loved his father, and he preferred to be near him, but he supposed it wasn’t required. He was twenty now, and Jycenth was a solid six. T’bia couldn’t believe he’d had his dragon for six turns. It felt like forever, and at the same time, like seconds.

Your thoughts are interesting today, Bibi. Are you going to get up? The blue dragon’s delicate and feminie voice wafted against T’bia’s mind, gently washing away his thoughts of homes and his father. T’bia smiled, and leaned up on one elbow to peer through his bedroom towards where his dragon was peering in from under the flap of hides that separated the cold outside from the comfortable inside.

“I guess so,” he said softly, still smiling at his dragon, though Jycenth withdrew his head to look out over the edge of the weyr as T’bia climbed out of his bed and got dressed in clean clothing, putting his sullied clothes from the previous day in the woven basket he used for that purpose. He would need to do his laundry soon, or he would be wearing his less desirable clothing. Perhaps he’d do that today? “Did you have plans for us, Jai?”

No, love. Jycenth stuck his head back through the hides, I thought I might go hunting today. Would you like to come?
“No thank you. Do you think you could take me and my laundry down to the lower levels before you leave? I think I’ll do my laundry.” T’bia grinned up at Jycenth as he held up the woven basket he’d collected on his way over to the dragon, and Jycenth snorted in amusement. Of course.

T’bia didn’t bother putting the riding straps on Jycenth; he would only have to carry them back up after he’d finished the laundry (he wouldn’t make Jycenth hunt in his gear without a rider!) and the ride down to the lower levels was hardly an exciting trip. In the early days, T’bia wouldn’t have dreamed of riding Jycenth without the security of his riding straps, but he’d grown a lot, and his bodn with his dragon had grown, too. Jycenth would never let anything happen to him, just as T’bia wouldn’t let anything happen to Jycenth.

Jycenth took the basket in his own grip, leaving T’bia free to cling to the spine in front of where he was sitting as the dragon took off, before gliding gently towards the ground. Landing with a slight jar, the dragon put the basket of dirty clothing down and lowered himself so that T’bia could slide lightly off his neck and land on the ground, knees bending to absorb the shock. Turning back to his dragon, T’bia gave Jycenth a pat on the nose, hugging his head to him for a moment before releasing the dragon and wishing him good hunting. Jycenth crooned, before taking off and heading out towards the open field where livestock was kept for feeding the dragons.

Sometimes, when T’bia felt like getting away, they would go down to Katila and hunt the wildlife there, but when he wasn’t in the mood, Jycenth tended to hunt in the fields. They didn’t particularly like being apart and neither sought out reason to leave the other for too long or too far. Shaking his head to clear it, T’bia picked up his basket and made his way towards the laundry room, greeting a couple of people in passing but otherwise keeping to himself.

Bumping the door way open with his hip, T’bia entered the steamy laundry room and glanced around, surprised that it appeared to be empty. Shrugging to himself, T’bia made his way to the far end of the room, and filled up one of the large barrels with hot water from the pump, thankful for the Weyrs internal plumbing and the volcano heating the waters. He hadn’t realised that the Weyrs themselves had been set up like that until they moved there. It explained a lot about Katila! Smiling to himself, T’bia hummed as he got a large wooden spoon to stir the soap sand into the water, before adding the first of his items.

Telgar Weyr had settled into a fairly regular routine since Ista and Fort had been repopulated, and as the unofficial schedule became more ingrained in the inhabitants of the Weyr, M'dox learned when the best times to do various chores and tasks were. 'Best times' meaning what time of day he was able to minimize running into others.

Now was one of the best times to do laundry.

M'dox carefully gathered up his clothing, making sure to check under all furniture. On the rare occasions that M'dox had a visitor to his room, they always gave him a knowing smirk, assuming something about the clothes strewn about his weyr. They were wrong in that assumption, and just thinking about it made heat rise in M'dox's cheeks. The truth was, he simply liked picking his clothes carefully, and often threw a discarded piece somewhere in excitement to try a new combination on. He was also, frankly, too tired at night to do much more than drop that day's clothes on the floor or over the back of a nearby chair. As a result, making sure he got all the dirty laundry required a thorough sweep of the room.

Satisfied that he had found everything, he tied his laundry bag closed and headed down to the laundry rooms. He sent Riquarth a quick mental update, informing the brown of his plans. Riquarth, who had chosen to spend the day basking in the sun with some other dragons, gave him a sleepy confirmation and a reminder to wash the sheets too. M'dox cursed under his breath and hurried back to his weyr to grab the sheets.

Sheets in hand, M'dox finally found himself outside the laundry room. Curiously, the door was wide open. M'dox frowned. He hoped this didn't mean someone was inside. He peered through the door, and saw another dragonrider along the far wall, actively washing clothes in one of the barrels. He recognized him as T'bia, a blue rider he knew of and had met briefly, but had never had much to do with. With a deep breath and some quiet encouragement from Riquarth, M'dox decided to go through with his laundry plans, and he quietly stepped into the room. He gave a polite nod towards the other rider, in case he had noticed M'dox entering. A nod was an appropriate response for the situation, and did not overly invite further interaction. M'dox chose a table as far from T'bia as possible, about halfway down one of the side walls, and begin sorting his clothes by color. An unfortunate side effect of having brightly colored clothes was the tendency of the dyes to run in the wash and make everything slightly brown. Thankfully, it was an avoidable side effect as long as he paid attention, so he set about carefully setting aside clothes.

T’bia was lost in his own world, his thoughts a million miles away as he absently moved the contents of his barrel around with the wooden paddal, being careful not to splash himself and humming away. He probably would have remained completely oblivious to his new companion, if it hadn’t been for Jycenth gently poking him mentally with a soft and breathy sounding laugh. Sweetheart, you have company. The dragon had taken a moment to peer in on his rider, and taken note of what T’bia had been oblivious to.

“Oh!” He said lightly, the sound punctuated with the slight splash of water and then T’bia was sticking his fingers in his mouth, cursing childishly (“Poop!”) around the mouthful of digits, his eyes watering from the sting of hot water. He felt his face flame up, and his shoulders hunched forward as he pulled his fingers free and shook his hand for a moment. Glancing bashfully towards M’dox, T’bia crept silently to the basin where cold water was located, and washed his hand quickly. The sting was abating, which was good, and he knew the water wasn’t hot enough to do any real damage. Nonetheless, Jycenth was anxiously on the edge of his mind, and T’bia took a moment to reassure the gentle blue that he was fine, no big, except he was dying of embarrassment.

That was hardly new!

Moving back to his barrel, T’bia positioned himself so he could study his companion quietly, head tilted slightly to one side. He didn’t recognise the young man, which wasn’t really strange – T’bia had been so wrapped up in his own weyrlinghood that he knew no one outside his classmates and his teachers; the older dragonriders were stationed on a pedestal that T’bia was probably unwise to lump them all onto, and the younger riders than himself were a blur of faces that became dragonriders. Jycenth usually helped him identify other riders, but he couldn’t help much when the dragon of the other rider wasn’t present and T’bia wasn’t sure he’d ever seen this guy. His eyes searched for knots, but if he was wearing them, T’bia couldn’t see them.

With his thoughts on knots, T’bia’s hand crept up to caress his own dragonrider knots, still entranced by the fact that he’d not only Impressed to Jycenth (obviously the best blue ever! Ayyonth was a close second though), but he had also graduated his Weyrlinghood. A miracle of itself, both to T’bia and pretty much everyone in the Weyr except the two blue dragons, and R’nd. R’nd had had so much faith in him. T’bia warmed up, thinking about his mentor. The crush he’d had on the older bluerider had faded some with time, but R’nd still brought an affectionate and warm feeling to T’bia’s tummy.

“Hello,” he greeted, his voice soft but firm in the gentle greeting. His blue eyes studied M’dox for a moment longer, searching his face. “I’m T’bia, of Jycenth,” a pause. “He’s blue.” He added, just in case the other man didn’t know who Jycenth was, or couldn’t see his knots or… well, just in case. T’bia smiled invitingly, waiting patiently for a response.

Careful planning and experience allowed M'dox to position himself in a way that meant he could sort his laundry while keeping an eye on the room's other occupant, with the bonus of not looking like he was watching the other man. He tried to focus on his work, carefully inspecting each garment. Pale yellow, old, goes in this pile. New shirt, dark red, will likely stain, wash it on its own or with other dark colors? Hmnn. He froze at an unexpected sound from T'bia, heart rate spiking. He took a shaky breath as he realized the noise had just been the other man accidentally touching the hot water, and his racing heart began to calm down. Riquarth started sending him the sensation of sunbathing out on the rocks to help him, and M'dox smiled gratefully at his dragon.

"Thank you, my heart."

He was so focused on the feelings of warmth and relaxation Riquarth was sending along their bond he almost missed when T'bia spoke to him, and if Riquarth hadn't actively been calming him, M'dox was certain he would have jumped out of his own skin. The bluerider didn't seem to know who he was. That was - good, actually. It mean his efforts at staying below people's notice was working. M'dox carefully considered his response.

"I'm M'dox of Riquarth." He said, taking a short pause to mirror T'bia's introduction. "He's brown." M'dox shaped his face into a friendly smile, to make sure the other man understood he wasn't mocking him, but paralleling his words to create a sense of companionship between them. Blue and green riders generally reacted well to that approach, in his experience.

T’bia blinked owlishly when his introduction was mirrored back at him, and he flushed in embarrassment, feeling he was being mocked, despite the friendly smile on M’dox’s face. Or perhaps because of it. The young man dropped his gaze and bowed his head, sulking as he stared into the barrel of soggy clothing. Sighing sadly, he flicked a glance at M’dox to make sure he wasn’t coming over, and then began fishing the items out of the barrel, and dropping them into the clean water in another barrel to rinse them.

Easy, Bibi, the blue dragon’s gentle and feminine voice wrapped around T’bia’s mind and warmed him, reassuring. I think he’s just being friendly. You should say something to him, Jycenth was being gently pushy, pressing his rider to step out of the bubble he had cocooned around himself at M’dox’s response. Like what? T’bia thought, glancing up in panic as he fumbled for something to say to the other man, and wondering why his dragon was pushing him to speak to him. But Jycenth was always right, so why wouldn’t he be right about this?

“Oh. Um. D-do you know R’nd?”

Everyone knew R’nd, or at least it often seemed that way to T’bia, so it seemed like a concrete turn of conversation. The young bluerider was looking slightly wild around the eyes as he glanced anxiously at M’dox, before hunching his shoulders and returning to poking his clothing around in the rinsing barrel. Once he was sure it was nice and clean, he pulled out a top and wrung it gently, then set it aside in a basket.

M'dox waited with baited breath for T'bia's response. At the other man's sigh and bent head, M'dox began to panic. He had misjudged the other man, made the wrong greeting choice, he had hurt T'bia in some way like an idiot. He tightened his grip on the shirt he was holding as his breathing speed up .

Breath, M'dox, it is alright. You can fix this.

"But how?" M'dox mentally wailed to his dragon, clenching and unclenching his hands around the shirt. He hadn't read the situation so poorly in a while, and now how could he fix it? Thankfully, while M'dox was panicking and T'bia was changing laundry baskets, T'bia seemed to have decided not to be seriously offended and spoke to him again. M'dox was so relieved he hadn't become like the bullies he hated he barely even minded being asked to talk about himself with a stranger. He responded slowly, keeping his eyes on his clothes.

"I do know him, yes. R'nd was the one who Searched me. He checks in with me and Riquarth occasionally." M'dox glanced up under his eyelashes to gauge T'bia's reactions. "I assume you know him?"

That was good! Riquarth praised him through their bond. M'dox smiled a little, eternally grateful for his dragon.

T’bia had been holding his breath, though he wasn’t aware of it, as he watched the brownrider consider the question he’d put forth. He was beginning to worry that he didn’t know R’nd, and that he was thinking T’bia was stupid for bringing up some random rider, when it seemed that M’dox was finally ready to present an answer. T’bia’s eyebrows arched upward at what was said, and a bright smile pulled the corners of his lips up, flashing white teeth briefly.

“Yes!” T’bia said excitedly, latching onto the information provided to him and the question that was asked. His smile was radiant. “He’s my mentor!” He chirped, delighted. It was probably not something most people would take pride in, needing a mentor, but T’bia knew he was a useless dragonrider and he knew that without R’nd taking the time to mentor him through his Weyrlinghood days (and even his Candidacy!) he wouldn’t have managed to graduate or even be half as good as he was now. Even so many years on, R’nd could still be counted on to lend a hand and answer any dumb questions T’bia was bound to spout out.

“You’re so lucky, to be Searched by him, I mean. He’s a great Searcher and he’s really friendly and I think he takes good care of his Candidates, don’t you? I mean, some Riders just Search ‘em and dump ‘em and R’nd isn’t like that at all. Do you know his dragon? I guess you do. Ayyonth is very nice. He’s my favourite blue, after Jycenth of course, but—” T’bia suddenly realised he was babbling, and flushed crimson as he clamped his lips together, wringing his hands together and shuffled anxiously. “Sorry,” he mumbled, distraught.

A soft smile broke out on M'dox's face, relieved that the initial seemed to have decreased a little. He felt he had figured out how to communicate with T'bia better. The bluerider seemed prone to say a lot, which gave M'dox an easier time. Having T'bia give his opinions so readily made it easier not to accidentally say something that would contradict his beliefs. It helped even more that in this case M'dox agreed with him.

"Yes, I'm glad he was my Searcher. I heard stories from some of the other Weyrlings during training. Some of them never saw their Searcher again. It really is nice of R'nd to check in on the people he's Searched. Since, you know, you don't really know anyone in the Weyr if you've been Searched. Having at least one recurring friendly face really helps. Especially one as nice as R'nd."

He was a little unsure what T'bia meant by 'mentor,' though. M'dox was fairly confident that there was no formal mentorship for riders other than golds and bronzes. Was it an unofficial thing? Just something T'bia called the other bluerider to express how helpful he's been? M'dox thought T'bia was Weyrborn, but perhaps not, if he knew R'nd so well? How to figure that out...

"Ayyonth is a very nice dragon. First dragon I ever rode too, since he carried me back to Katila. How about you? Was he the first dragon you rode too?"

Relief washed over T’bia when M’dox didn’t mock his motor mouth, the crimson slowly leaking away as T’bia looked up, listening to what the brownrider was saying as he dug up another shirt from the barrel of rinsing water, and gently wrung it out, before placing it in the basket of we clothing. Smiling absently and mostly to himself, he set about putting another load of washing in the soapy water and mashing it with the paddle. He agreed with what M’dox was saying, but was still self-conscious of his babbling a moment before, so he didn’t offer up any more for a few minutes, working steadily on his washing.

“I heard much the same,” T’bia said gently, looking up bashfully and hoping M’dox hadn’t felt he was being ignored. T’bia was still pink cheeked and his eyes were shy. “No, my father is a bluerider,” T’bia said proudly, smiling brightly. He loved his father dearly and went out of his way to make the man proud of him. It wasn’t something he was very good at, but he tried and his father always seemed to appreciate every little thing T’bia did. He’d been so proud when T’bia Impressed Jycenth! “They’re Th’nyr and Quendyluth.” He offered, smiling proudly as he mentioned them. “They Impressed, well, you know, before.” Before the Plague. T’bia shuddered and glanced unconsciously in the direction he knew Jycenth was located in.

“He’s here at Telgar, with my siblings. They don’t have dragons. My brother has Stood a few times, but he hasn’t managed to Impress yet. I hope he does. He’d make a good dragonrider. Probably a brown or bronze! He’s a natural leader, not like me. I’m a loser. My sister’s probably won’t stand though. I think dad wants to send them to one of the Halls, but they don’t like taking girls and so I’m not sure he’ll be able to. Plus the Halls kind of hate dragonriders, what with what they did, you know. So I guess they might end up standing anyway…” He trailed off, flushing hotly again. He studiously set himself to working on his clothing, swallowing the apology that threatened to pour fourth. Jycenth didn’t feel T’bia should always apologise when his mouth ran away with him, and T’bia was doing his best to make his dragon proud of him.

Worry plagued M'dox in the minutes he waited for T'bia to respond. As Riquarth hummed reassurance through their bond, M'dox finished sorting his laundry into separate loads. He wondered whether he should take a wash tub next to T'bia, since they were sort of talking, but since he hadn't responded did that mean the conversation was over and he should go to the farthest wash tub? He began nervously folding and unfolding the sheet, pretending to be checking for stains and holes while he debated which washtub to take.

Thankfully, T'bia responded and made his decision easier.

"That makes you Weyrbred, right?" M'dox asked as he gathered up his chosen first load of laundry. He decided not to address T'bia's 'loser' comment. The bluerider didn't seem like a loser to him, but considering he was a loser himself, he wasn't sure how good his judgement was. Besides, he had no idea how to have that conversation, and absolutely no desire to. He thought about what it would be like to have his siblings at Telgar. He figured all his siblings would have Impressed by now; he definitely would have been the last to Impress. He figured Raddrea would have a bronze, and probably Den as well. He thought Enfrai would be most likely to have a green (not that she couldn't Impress a gold, green just seemed to fit better). As much as he missed his family, he couldn't imagine them living at the Weyr with him. It made him curious.

"What's it like having your family around?" He asked as he approached the row of washtubs along the back wall. "Also, do you mind if I use this one?" M'dox said, pointing to the hot wash tub one over from T'bia. Riquarth crooned proudly and M'dox blushed, a mix of talking to a stranger and the praise from his dragon.

“Uh, yeah,” T’bia stumbled, surprised by the question. “Dad is too. Dunno how far back, though. Probably forever, because I don’t know of any family outside the dragonriders. Not that many are alive these days, what with the, you know, Plague,” the last word was whispered dramatically, T’bia’s blue eyes wide as saucers. He might not have been alive during the Plague, but he’d heard enough growing up in Katila to get some idea of how terrible it was, never mind the lingering ‘what if’ that it could have been him during those days, that he could have lost Jycenth who was definitely the best thing that had ever happened to him. Ever, ever, ever!

“Not at all!” T’bia grinned brightly when M’dox asked if he could use a barrel near him, the expression radiant on T’bia’s young face, though the shadow on his jawline belied the fact that he hadn’t shaved that day, and was actually older than he looked. Puberty had skipped by T’bia, leaving very little of its mark upon him, though it had refined his features slightly and his facial hair had made a valiant effort at growing, for the most part he hadn’t changed a lot at all. He’d also managed to avoid the hell of acne, though how was beyond the young man. It would have been typical of life to dump him in that vat head first, and yet, it didn’t. Maybe life felt sorry for him.

“It’s good!” T’bia cheered happily, splashing water as he shoved a couple of shirts into the rinsing barrel, and the liquid sopped up his arms and got sprinkles across his chest. “I’m closest to dad, but I help look after the girls when they are around, they’re only kids, under ten... I love kids, they’re precious, and always fun. My brother lives on his own now, which is fair, ‘cause so do I, I guess. My sisters are flight brats, but my brother and I share a mother,” his lips tightened on the last word, indicating the bad blood that rested between woman and son. It wasn’t something T’bia chose to share, and he moved on quickly. “But I’ve never really not had family around, you know? So I guess I don’t really have anything to compare it to, now I think about it.” T’bia blinked, and looked frankly at M’dox. “What was it like, leaving your family?” His curiosity was as frank as his expression.

M'dox nodded at T'bia's description of the dragonrider Plague. He hadn't experienced it himself, having neither been born or living in a Weyr, but he figured the illness that killed three of his siblings was a decent comparison. Being six turns at the time, he didn't remember it well, but he remembered how empty the house felt afterwards. He figured it was like that for the dragonriders, except on a much bigger scale. With the added dimensions of moving to a completely unknown area of the world and having to almost completely rebuild their lives and society.

"Thanks." He said, shaking off the thoughts about plagues as he dumped his first load of laundry in the empty tub. M'dox turned on the hot water pump, and started filling the tub slowly. He continued to watch T'bia out of the corner of his eye. The bluerider had seemed pleased he had come over to work next to him? That was rare. M'dox was unsure how to interpret the bright smile he was given. It felt nice to be on the receiving end of a smile like that, though - it didn't feel like the smile of someone who was smiling because they planned to hurt you, which was what M'dox was used to having aimed at him. Biting his lip, M'dox considered T'bia's question about leaving his family.

"It was... I'm not sure, it's hard to describe." He admitted, adding the soap sand and gently stirring it in. T'bia's earnest face and openness made M'dox want to be open too, despite the logical part of his brain saying it was a bad idea. His instincts, and Riquarth's gentle encouragement through their bond, won out over his logical caution. "I think it would have been worse if R'nd had come a year or two earlier." M'dox said, carefully stirring his laundry in the tub. "All my siblings had recently been married, and the younger two had moved out within the past three years. So I guess I was slowly being separated from my family anyway, so when R'nd took me to Katila, I didn't miss them as much as I expected. And I love all of them, but they..." he paused, considering his words. "I was sixteen, an adult, and I was going to be expected to follow in the steps of my siblings, marry a nice woman, have children, and have my own plot of a farm. I wasn't ready for that, and my family had started getting a bit. Pushy." M'dox shook his head and laughed a bit in self-deprication. "Riding away on a dragon was practically lifesaving at that point."

T’bia’s nose scrunched up adorably at the mention of being sixteen and the expectations that the Holders apparently put on their youth at such an age. T’bia was glad he’d been born into the Weyr, even as unconventional as Katila. At least he’d never felt the pressure to find a nice girl and get married… Well, during Candidacy they’d been encouraged to sleep around, but T’bia had never felt the urge to experiment with his fellow candidates, and while he was still a bashful virgin, there were no expectations on his shoulders. Dragonriders seemed to be so much more relaxed! Sleep around, don’t sleep around, find a mate, don’t find a mate. Yes, T’bia was much happier being a Weyrfolk than a Holderfolk.

“Farming sounds… dirty,” T’bia commented slowly, looking curiously up at M’dox; he was up to his elbows in the barrel, withdrawing items of clothing. “I like dragonriding, it’s a very clean lifestyle.” He grinned. “If you’re not doing your laundry, you’re washing a dragon!” And didn’t that require a lot of water! T’bia grinned happily as he wrung out some more clothing, ebfore turning his attention to the unwashed pile. It was depleting, but the chit-chat was making the progress slower than usual. Not that T’bia minded, he realized. He was having fun, chatting to this brownrider, and he was delighted that the other man didn’t seem inclined to mock him for the things he said. T’bia had a terrible habit of speaking before thinking, and running his mouth. It was nice to not worry too much about it!

“Are all your family farmers? Even the girls? It doesn’t sound like a very girly thing to do, does it? I can’t imagine being anything but a dragonrider. I’m ever so glad I Impressed Jycenth. Do you think you’ll visit your family? Sometimes I think about going back to Katila, but I guess here is home now, and it’s not so bad. I like visiting the Hold. Do you? Dad likes to go to the taverns, but I like the bakeries. They sell the most delicious treats, have you tried any?” T’bia fell off as he struggled to shove his bedsheet into the barrel, and mash it down with the paddle, mixing it into the soapy water and cleaning it.

"Farming can be very dirty," M'dox said, laughing "It depends on what you're doing though. Working in the fields or with Herdbeasts is definitely dirty, but running messages or working in the kitchens is less so." He frowned at his clothing, poking them with the paddle. Deciding they were clean enough, he started using the paddle to lift the garments from the tub to a tub of cool, soap-free water.

He was a little overwhelmed by the speed of T'bia's words. The bluerider's excitement was charming. A bit overpowering sometimes, but charming nonetheless. Taking a moment to process all the questions aimed at him, M'dox considered how to answer as he continued transferring his clothing.

"All my family work on the farm in some capacity, though you wouldn't necessarily call the women farmers. The women and girls do lots of work too, like cooking, laundry, mending clothes, growing herbs, preserving food, stuff like that. I definitely prefer being a dragonrider. The idea of not being with Riquarth..." He shuddered a bit, reaching out to his dragon to reassure himself of their bond.

I am here, Maddy.

M'dox smiled, sending love to the brown. "Thank you, heart." He finished transferring his clothes, and began to stir them in the rinse-water, before continuing to answer T'bia's questions.

"I'm sure I'll visit my family someday, but I don't think it's time just yet." He had no idea what he would say to his family. How would the treat him? No, it was not time yet. M'dox shook his head, chasing away those thoughts. "I haven't been to the Hold yet. Didn't have anyone to go with, and it's a bit intimidating alone. So no, I've never had any of the Hold bakery treats." He admitted, pulling a shirt out of the water to check if the soap was gone. Confirming it was properly rinsed, M'dox began taking the clothes out to hang them up on one of the drying racks.

T’bia tilted his head thoughtfully; farming seemed a lot more involved than he’d first thought! He had gathered there would be activities like looking after the livestock and working in the fields, but he hadn’t thought much beyond that. Learning that there was as much kitchen work to do on a farm as there was in a Weyr was insightful, and learning that there were message runners was too. He supposed it made sense, but he wondered if he ever would have realized how involved it all was if M’dox hadn’t told him. Probably not. T’bia sighed softly to himself and dug up his now-clean washing and began to wring it out, slowly moving it to the basket of wet laundry he was collecting. T’bia had had bad experiences with leaving his washing in the public locations to dry, so he had set up drying racks in his own weyr where it would be safe.

A serious nod was given in acceptance of M’dox’s comment about not visiting his family yet. While T’bia couldn’t really relate on the front of his whole family, he imagined that M’dox felt about visiting his family how T’bia felt about the prospect of visiting his mother again. A shudder travelled his spine, and the young man forced the thoughts and memories that were brought up by the mere connection to his mother, aside. He didn’t want to delve into any of that, not now, not ever! T’bia felt Jycenth step in, and the blue dragon easily blew away the memories and replaced them with love and acceptance. T’bia relaxed visibly.

“Oh, that’s a shame,” T’bia said softly, looking down trodden on M’dox’s behalf. The Hold was a lot of fun! “I went a lot with dad to start with, but it’s not so bad to go alone!” Of course T’bia unintentionally stuck to the ‘good’ parts of town, and wasn’t aware of those people who still hated on the dragonriders; he would have been shocked to learn that there were people in town that would spit on him if they were given the chance. Not because he didn’t expect to be treated like a leper (he was thus treated regularly by his fellow riders) but because he couldn’t comprehend people who didn’t like dragonriders as a whole.

T’bia was too insecure to think of offering to accompany M’dox into the Hold sometime, but Jycenth was not. He reached out gently to the brown dragon, not knowing the pair well enough to consider bespeaking the other rider without permission. Perhaps you and your rider would like to accompany us sometime, Riquarth? We’d be delighted with the company. T’bia is too shy to make such an invitation himself, The young blue dragon’s feminine voice was soft and light, almost airy though it sparkled with amusement at the end, and love of his human. T’bia blinked, and flushed though he smiled timidly at M’dox, hopeful that the other would accept the invitation issued through dragons.

Jycenth has invited us to go to the Hold with them sometime. Riquarth informed his rider.You should accept.

"Do you think so?" M'dox fretted, wringing out a shirt with more force than necessary. "Talking while doing laundry is one thing, but going to the Hold together is most of a day isn't it? That's a lot longer. What if he decides he doesn't like me halfway through?"

Then it is his loss, and we leave and enjoy ourselves elsewhere. Though I do not think that will happen. Say yes. the brown insisted.

"Alright, say yes then." He said, getting a second load of laundry from the side table to bring over to the wash tub. "Technically, Jycenth asked you, not me. He could feel Riquarth's resignation.

I will today. Next time, I'm making you say yes.

"I trust you will."

Laughing, M'dox dropped the next load in the lukewarm water, refilling it with soap sand as he waited for Riquarth to pass on his message.

~~~~~~~~~~
We would greatly enjoy joining you both sometime. Thank you for the invitation. The brown said, reaching out to Jycenth, as well as sending a feeling of wry amusement at their riders using them as messengers.
T’bia waited anxiously and hopefully as Jycenth said he was waiting for a reply. But the longer M’dox took to give his dragon a yes – or to answer with a yes verbally – the more worried T’bia became. Maybe M’dox was just being polite? T’bia shifted anxiously while Jycenth hushed him gently, encouraging him to be patient. It had only been a few seconds! M’dox had probably not even gotten the message from his dragon yet! Easy, Bibi, I’m sure we’ll get an answer soon. T’bia emptied his dirty water into the drain that ran around the outside of the room. But what if he laughs? Why would he want to come to the Hold with me, Jai? This was a bad idea. Take it back
Jycenth was in the process of telling T’bia he would do no such thing when M’dox suddenly laughed and T’bia flinched as if he’d been hit, his eyes widening and filling with tears as he set the barrel upright once more. The young bluerider bit his bottom lip and glanced anxiously at the waiting pile of still dirty laundry. He couldn’t leave before he’d finished it, it would be too obvious that he was running away, but he really didn’t want to stay in the same room as the brownrider that was laughing at his invitation (even if it had been Jycenth who issued it and it was the blue dragon’s idea, really). T’bia sniffled softly.
Perfect, Jycenth crooned to Riquarth, before turning his attention with slight alarm upon the almost-crying T’bia. Oh love, hush now, they said they would love to join us. Why are you crying. He laughed at me, T’bia whimpered, picking up an armload of washing before realizing his barrel was empty. He dropped it, and set about pumping fresh water into the barrel, and adding soap sand to it. He wiped at his eyes absently as he picked up the load again and dropped it into the barrel. He gave it a jab with the spoon. Oh Bibi, I’m sure there is some other explanation, love. Here, why don’t you ask? No? Very well, I will. Jycenth ignored the way his young rider was suddenly staring with apprehension at M’dox, his face white and eyes huge in his face.
Did your rider laugh at mine? Jycenth hadn’t even been aware that M’dox had laughed, but if T’bia said he did, he must have – T’bia just wasn’t the type to make up stories like that. The dragon’s words were unusually demanding, but his tone of voice was just as light and airy as ever, delicate. I would like to think it is a mis-understanding. The dragon confided, but he was clearly willing to fight for his young rider if it came to that.
Did he - no, he was laughing at something I said about him. He doesn't believe I will make him answer himself next time, instead of relaying his answer for him. The brown sighed, resigned. He's probably right, of course. In any case, Riquarth said, reassuring Jycenth He was in no way laughing at your rider.
While the dragons were conversing, M'dox turned away from his newly filled wash tub to see if T'bia had gotten his response yet. To his surprise, the bluerider was staring at him, looking like he was about to cry.
"Are you alright?" He asked, concern in his voice. "Did you get soap in your eye? Or-" M'dox could feel panic growing with each word, trying to think back to everything he had done in the past few minutes. He hung up clothes to dry, Riquarth had passed on the message from Jycenth, he'd gotten a new load of laundry, he'd laughed at Riquarth saying he was going to make him answer - oh, no he'd laughed out loud, hadn't he? M'dox felt his chest tighten. How could he have been so careless? Usually he kept a tight lid on his conversations with Riquarth and gave as few indications he was speaking to his dragon as possible. But doing laundry and talking to T'bia with Riquarth half asleep in the background had just been so nice he'd slipped up.
"Was it me laughing?" He asked, taking a step towards T'bia then stopping, unsure if he should move closer. He thought maybe it wouldn't be appreciated. "I'm so sorry, it wasn't at you, I swear, or Jycenth, or anything like that!" M'dox said, voice rising in pitch and speed as he kept going. " I thought that since Jycenth asked it was polite to answer him directly, so I asked Riquarth to do it, and Riquarth was saying he'd make me answer instead of relaying the message next time and was laughing 'cause he's said the before and never done it, it really wasn't at you, or about you, I really mean it, I wouldn't want to hurt you at all, you've been really nice, and I was having a good time, and now I've ruined it cause I never think!" He rambled, tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. He never wanted to be like the boys who hurt him as a kid, but look at him now. What an awful person he was.
"I'm sorry." M'dox whispered, hugging his arms to his chest.
T’bia flinched visibly, both when M’dox asked him what was wrong – as if he didn’t know! – and when the young man asked if it was because he had laughed. T’bia just stared, eyes swimming in tears he refused to let fall. He wouldn’t let him see him cry! He’d done so well over the past couple of Turns of not letting people see how much they could upset him! He was going so well, but this afternoon had been so fun and he had thought he’d made a new friend, and then the other guy laughed at him. T’bia’s bottom lip trembled slightly and he couldn’t stop the tears that finally spilled free, toppling down his cheeks without restraint. He was too nervous to wipe them away.
To say T’bia was slightly overwhelmed when M’dox began his rampage of words, would have been an understatement. He was so surprised he even managed to think a broken Is this how I sound? at Jycenth, who crooned his amusement but didn’t deny that T’bia did often sound like the other man as he rambled to fill the silence. Or explain himself. Often very badly. T’bia blinked, and his eyes dried a little, though he could feel the salty stickiness of the tears that had fallen upon his cheeks. T’bia felt his face heating up as he realised that M’dox’s laughter had been completely innocent and one hundred percent not aimed at him. How foolish he was! To think everything was about himself! T’bia chewed on his bottom lip, rubbed his eyes, and then hugged himself anxiously.
“I’m sorry,” He offered, voice a low murmur. He was so embarrassed. How could he be so stupid? In his defence, it often was at his expense when other people laughed in his presence, but hadn’t M’dox been nothing but nice to him? How had T’bia repaid that kindness? By accusing him of being mean to him! “I’m sorry!” T’bia almost cried, staring anxiously at M’dox. “I shouldn’- I mean – I don’t – I mean…. You shoulldn’t have to worry about thinking when you’re talking to your dragon and I’m sorry I took it personally. I’m so stupid like that. I’m sorry! Please don’t be mad…” I don’t think he’s mad, sweetheart. I think he’s sad.
That just horrified T’bia even more. “Don’t be sad!”
Stupid, stupid, stupid, you’re so stupid, can’t even get through a simple conversation without hurting someone. This is why you don’t talk to people. M’dox berated himself as he watched a few tears fall down T’bia’s cheeks.
You did not intend to hurt him. Riquarth told him gently, reaching out to his rider and sending as much love as he could. It is not your fault your actions were misinterpreted. You have apologized and explained the situation. You are not bad.
”Not meaning to hurt him doesn’t mean I didn’t hurt him though.” He thought at his dragon, hanging his head and glaring at the floor. ”The hurt’s still there.
Well, clearly there’s nothing you can do about that then, so stop worrying. The brown said with a bit of admonishment aimed at M’dox. Say something to him. Deal with the situation.
M’dox took a deep, steadying breath as he listened to T’bia apologizing. Apologizing to him as if he hadn’t been the one to make the bluerider cry. How could he possibly be mad?
“It’s okay,” the brownrider started, swiping his arm across his face to dry his eyes. “It’s not your fault, not really.” M’dox considered how to continue. Humor hadn’t worked so well earlier in the conversation, so he ruled that out immediately. As much as ending the conversation there and never bringing it up again appealed to him, he actually rather wanted to talk to T’bia again, so that wasn’t a great choice either. He could try sincerity. It might be uncomfortable to talk so much about how he felt to a near stranger, but it was probably the best choice. T’bia was being open and honest with him, so giving him the same courtesy, especially after making him cry, seemed like a good idea. The bluerider had the strange effect of making M’dox want to spill his heart out. He vaguely wondered if T’bia was aware of this power he had, before readying himself to speak, eyes still on the floor.
“I’ve always hated people who are needlessly cruel to others, and I don’t want to be like that to anyone. It may have made me overreact, which I apologize for.” He looked up, briefly meeting T’bia’s gaze. “You don’t need to apologize for having feelings and reacting emotionally. That’s… that’s neither of our faults.” He admitted, Riquarth humming in approval and pride at his ability to say that out loud to the other rider.
T’bia frowned, anxiously chewing on his bottom lip as M’dox said it was okay. It wasn’t okay, none of this was okay, but T’bia didn’t know how to press his point without dragging the whole situation out to extraordinary lengths that he was figuring out that neither of them wanted to be a part of. So he let it go, shrugging uncomfortably as he let the matter settle into the dust. It wouldn’t be forgotten – T’bia wasn’t the type to simply forget things (life would be so much simpler if he had a fishbowl brain!) instead, he was content to let it go. If M’dox said it wasn’t his intention to hurt him, and he certainly looked upset enough about the situation for T’bia to consider it the truth, then T’bia would believe him.
“Me either,” T’bia said softly, picking at his nails and frowning thoughtfully at M’dox. He rubbed at his cheek absently; it was itchy from his tears. He yawned and then straightened up and flashed M’dox a bright smile, only slightly less dull than his most genuine of expressions. He wanted to be happy, and they’d been having fun – or at least T’bia had, and he liked to think M’dox had been, too! You were both having a good time, Jycenth agreed, sending T’bia love and affection, and I’m sure you can make it a good time again!
T’bia took a step forward apprehensively, and held out his left hand, looking up to meet M’dox’s eyes head on. “Friends?” He enquired quietly, eyebrows pulled together above his eyes in worry.
Ehh. Sorry it's kinda shitty lol.
M'dox looked up, searching T'bia's face. The bluerider sounded genuine, and his face told the same story, tear stained as it was. He smiled softly, starting to reach out his right hand before realizing that wouldn't work and quickly reaching out his left hand too. Grasping T'bia's forearm with his left hand, he placed his right on the back of T'bia's hand (Had to use that right hand, pulling it back would have been weird. Though maybe this was also weird? Shit, M'dox wasn't sure).
"Friends." He confirmed, nodding. "Uh, that means the plan to go to the Hold together sometime is still on, or...?" He asked, worried that maybe making T'bia cry waiting for his response to the question meant the offer was retracted. Bad associations and all that. M'dox really hoped it wasn't. Having someone with him who knew the Hold, even a little bit, would be really helpful, and he probably would never go alone. And, since he didn't really have other friends (and he couldn't ask R'nd, that felt weird, for some reason), if T'bia didn't want to go anymore, M'dox might have to wait a long time for another opportunity.
T’bia smiled, wide and radiant. “Of course!” he chirped, hand still secure in M’dox’s grasp. It probably would have been uncomfortable, but T’bia was quite used to the touchy-feely nature of R’nd, so having the brownrider before him apparently forget they had their hands clasped didn’t bother T’bia at all, and he didn’t make a big scene when he gently extracted his left hand so that he could return to his laundry. He was almost done, which kind of made him sad, because he felt like he and M’dox were almost flying on the same air current.
“We can go whenever you want,” he chattered, wringing out his bed sheets as best he could, “Jycenth and I haven’t been in a while, but we don’t really have anything to schedule around, what with the lack of Wings and stuff. Mostly just general chores and those can be put aside for a few hours so long as they’re done, I suppose.” He looked up and flashed his smile again, his mood buoyant once more. For all that he was easy to bring down with a few well placed (or accidental) words, T’bia was a cheerful young man at his core, and he couldn’t be kept down for long.
“Today might not be a good day, what with us both elbows deep in laundry, but other than that, I think we’re good. Jai? Did you have plans?” He spoke out loud to his dragon, to give M’dox the benefits of hearing at least half of the conversation, T’bia’s head tilted slightly to one side as he listened to his dragon’s response. “He doesn’t want to go today, because he’s just gorged, and wants to sleep it off.” T’bia laughed.
Relief washed over M'dox at T'bia's response, nodding at the confirmation. He blushed when the bluerider carefully moved from his grip; he hadn't realized he was still holding on to the other man. M'dox had just been so focused on conveying how heartfelt his words were and had forgotten to let go. Thankfully, T'bia seemed unbothered, but M'dox still flushed at how forward his actions could be interpreted. Returning to his laundry seemed like a great idea, in an attempt to hide his red face.
He finished soaping the load of laundry, that was thankfully a cool water load, as the water had definitely gotten cold while he'd been distracted. Listening to T'bia chatter about his schedule, he started transferring the clothing to one of the rinse tubs.
"Uh, I'm also pretty open." M'dox told T'bia, dropping the last shirt into the rinse water. "I have another three loads after this one, so I think I'll have to pass on today as well. Besides," he said, turning to T'bia and smiling, "I would never try to make a sleepy dragon fly when he doesn't feel like it."
That's because you have good sense. Riquarth told him with a gentle mental nudge. M'dox sent a mental laugh at the brown, careful not to do it out loud. No purpose in repeating that
"Have Jycenth let Riquarth know when you guys have time? A little advance warning would be nice, if you can arrange it."
“How does three days from now sound?” T’bia asked, looking up from his own washing to see M’dox rather occupied with his own. He watched the other dragonrider curiously for a few moments, not aware of his staring. It was always interesting to see how people did the same tasks in different ways.
“I don’t imagine anything particularly important will pop up then?” Of course, that would be their luck, actually going out and making plans, that something would crop up and prevent them from going on their outing. T’bia smiled ruefully. “If something does come up, we have dragons!” He grinned impishly, flushed slightly, and returned his attention to his laundry.
Shoving the rest of it in the basket he planned to have Jycenth carry back to their weyr, T’bia lifted his gaze to M’dox’s and smiled shyly. “I think I’m done here.” He announced, though it was somewhat redundant as he stood there fiddling with his fingers, washing now clean and still wet. He’d hang it up when he got back to his weyr, and Jycenth would spend the next couple of hours ducking under the stings of line T’bia had stowed away for drying his laundry.
“See you in three days?” He asked, wanting to reaffirm their, well, not date (he flushed at the thought) but their arrangement. Yes, that sounded much more official and proper!
"Three days sounds good." M'dox affirmed, stirring his laundry in the rinse water. He turned to face T'bia, only to find the other man staring at him. Shifting nervously under the scrutiny, M'dox nodded at what T'bia said. He wasn't entirely sure what he meant by 'we have dragons,' but he figured it was maybe just about ease of communication? If something came up it would be simple for Riquarth or Jycenth to contact the other and let them know. That's probably it. Maybe. He still nodded anyway though.
He looked back at the three stacks still waiting on the side table, then back to the bluerider, smiling a little. "Lucky you. I'm gonna be stuck in here for ages. Serves me right for waiting until I had nothing left that was clean, doesn't it?"
"Three days." M'dox confirmed, smiling much wider by this point. "Unless we run into each other before then, which, you know, might happen, you never know. I mean, we'll still meet in three days even if we do run into each other before that, but uhm, what I mean is it was really nice meeting you and I'm sure going to the Hold together will be fun and..." Faranth, he needed to shut up right now, why had he lost complete control of his mouth?
Because you're a bit worked up and flustered from making him cry and then panicking about it. Riquarth said, mindvoice full of amusement.
"Thank you, Riquarth, your commentary is invaluable as always." The brownrider told his dragon rather grumpily. He could practically feel the dragon grinning.
"Uh, yeah, three days." M'dox finished, blushing furiously. "Definitely." And he couldn't even blame his reddening face on standing to close to a tub full of steaming water, since it was a cool rinse. Damnit.
T’bia smiled as he turned to empty the barrel of rancid water. Okay, so maybe rancid was a bit rich, but the water was a distasteful colour and he wasn’t keen on getting it near his face or hands. T’bia emptied it carefully, dancing a little bit to make sure he didn’t get any water on his shoes.
“I do my laundry every week,” T’bia teased, figuring from the pile that M’dox either went through a lot of clothing, or he tended to leave it until he ran out of clothing before doing his laundry. T’bia figured it was a combination, since the brownrider didn’t appear to be wearing the dregs of a wardrobe – or maybe he simply had a lot of great clothing? T’bia flushed slightly, and turned his attention to picking up his basket of freshly laundered clothing. He grinned to himself when M’dox confirmed he’d waited until the last moment to do his laundry.
It was nice to hear someone who babbled as much as he did, T’bia decided, smiling to himself as he carefully arranged his basket before him in the most comfortable way to carry out to where Jycenth would be waiting. “See you then!” T’bia beamed, waving cheerfully before making his way out to Jycenth, grinning at his dragon and his success at making a new friend. He couldn’t wait to tell R’nd!
