Indivara had planned to take the day off, and in a particularly charitable moment, had even informed B’jin – the pair of which had been taking their lessons in Weyrlinghood education very seriously – that she wouldn’t be available for the next day, at least. Maybe more! The greenrider had been content enough to let her take a few days off, since his little gold firelizard had recently clutched, and he was intent on finding where she’d stowed her eggs away. Not that Indivara gave one whit about any of that, she just wanted time to herself – and Venseth.

While the morning dawned cool and crisp, with the promise of Autumn in the air, Indivara could tell it was going to warm up nicely, the girl sneaking quietly around the room she shared with V’ler to dress in the semi-dark. Slipping out onto the dragon’s ledge, she’d given Veeth’s nose a cuddle before she’d turned her attention upon Venseth, getting him into his riding straps and herself on board so that they could leap out into the brisk air. A few moments later, well above the Weyr, they had vanished between.

Three breath’s later, and they arrived above Ista Weyr. Venseth bugled a greeting to the watch dragon, and then turned on his wing towards a favourite beach. Not that they’d had much chance to visit it, given Indivara’s seriousness when it came to her learning all there was to learn about educating Weyrlings. She was still constantly surprised by how much she didn’t know, considering she’d been through Weyrlinghood relatively recently. Sort of.

While some folks enjoyed the white sandy beaches, Indivara and Venseth had come to favour a rocky expanse off to the edge of the Island, rarely visited by other dragonriders and never (to their knowledge) by non-riders. The area was full of sharp rocky crags that dropped off into choppy water. Indivara didn’t swim when they visited, but preferred to relax on the hot rocks near the edge where water could spray up at her, cooling her down without soaking her. Venseth tended to range from swimming out where the water was deep, to sleeping soundly on the hot, sunny rocks.

Today, Indivara had brought a fishing pole and line, with a small basket and some bait. While Venseth took off to swim before sunning himself, Indivara settled herself down on the edge of a high overhang, threading a piece of meat onto her hook before tossing the line out. As she waited patiently, little Saph and Queenie both appeared out of between, scolding her for leaving them behind. She was amused; they’d both been sleeping curled up against V’ler, and it was hardly her fault they hadn’t wanted to wake up. After the firelizards felt she was properly scolded, they set about playing tug-of-war with a piece of stolen meat, much to Indivara’s amusement.

It's early.
Yes it is.
Why are we awake?
Because the earlier we go, the earlier we can come back in case we're needed.
I'd rather we just go back to sleep.
You can sleep in the sun when we get there
Fine.

Vee rolled her eyes and smiled a bit as she worked the straps over her fussy dragon and settled them into place before securing them. She was always extra diligent about her riding straps. It wouldn't do for her to fall off because K'ton might kill her. He may try, but I would not allow it., Nadioth told her matter-of-factly, causing Vee to laugh. I know you wouldn't, love K'ton was already gone that morning so she wasn't worried about waking him with her laughter or noise. Not that he would have minded much, but she likely wouldn't have made it out of the weyr before midday had he been there.

Straps finally in place she picked up the pack she had prepared the night before and opened it. She put a bundle of fresh fruit and bread inside then closed it back up. She slid the strap onto her shoulder and climbed up and into her seat, where she fastened the pack into place. She secured herself into her seat and gave Nadioth's neck a gentle pat. Ready? Nadioth huffed as she stood and stretched lazily, like an overgrown feline. If we must., was all she said before dropping out of the weyr and into the cool morning air. Cool air, that was something she had missed, and was forever glad they had moved north again. She wasn't a fan of being constantly hot and sticky, which was pretty much life in the south. Nadioth rumbled beneath her before giving a bugle of greeting to the watch dragon, then winked Between

Moments later they were over the beach, one of the generally quieter beaches, especially this time of year. Nadioth hovered for a moment, surveying the rocky area they preferred, for the best place to land. Vee felt Nadioth's annoyance as she spotted the blue and his rider. It's occupied. Let's go back., she complained as they flew over slowly. Don't be ridiculous, who is it?, she asked. She looked as they flew over but could only see the blue hide of the dragon and the dark hair of the rider. Venseth of Indivara, Nadioth replied as she banked and circled lazily, finally coming to land on an expanse of rock not too far from the blue rider, though not close enough to overly crowd. The name gave Vee some pause before she unhooked her pack finally and dismounted with practiced ease. She knew Indivara, or rather, knew of her, everyone from Katila did.

She couldn't remember offhand ever actually speaking to her, and that fault was all her own. She had never had any bad experience with her, though her behavior was fairly well known, Vee had always kept herself separate from most of the candidates, lost in her own head as she had always been. She was suffering for it now of course, but she was working on it slowly. She was a gold rider, a Junior Weyrwoman. It was her job to know everyone in and around her weyr. She set her pack off to the side where it was unlikely to fall and looked up at Nadioth who was already looking more and more disgruntled. Why not go for a swim then stretch out in the sun?, she told her. Nadioth dipped her head down and considered her rider with one whirling eye. We will leave soon, yes? Soon enough. Now go, and behave.

The last bit was said sternly, she knew very well how tempermental her dragon could be around those she didn't like or know well. The gold snorted softly then, with a few wing beats and scattered stones, was off and gliding toward the ocean waves, where she delicately landed in the water a decent distance from the blue. Vee reaffirmed her command to behave then turned to where Indivara was fishing. This was probably not going to go over well, but she called out a friendly, "Good morning, Indivara.", regardless. "We're sorry to intrude," No we're not Hush! "We didn't realize anyone would be here. Generally no one is, I hope you don't mind.

Indivara gave the fishing line a jerk, a smirk of success on her lips when she reeled the line in and saw a fat fish on the hook, struggling against the end of its life. Delighted with her catch, the girl unhooked the fish and quickly silenced it, killing it with a swift cut of the knife she kept beside her. Putting the fish carefully aside in the basked with slowly melting snow in it, Indivara set about re-baiting her hook and sending it out again. She wasn’t the best cook, but she knew how to cook fish, and she’d either gorge herself on fish here on the beachside, or she’d bring them home and share with Valerian. To be honest, she’d probably gorge herself here.

She was watching the vague direction of the line when Venseth looked up from where he was sunning himself on the rocks, and bugled a greeting. Frowning, Indivara’s gaze shifted up and her eyes narrowed when she took in the golden hide filling the sky like a second sun. She grimaced, and flicked her gaze to Venseth questioningly. Nadioth of Vaeyla, he supplied, and Indivara scrunched her nose up. Her attention was diverted as Nadioth landed by her line jerking, and she jerked back before reeling in another fish. She was smirking with satisfaction as she slaughtered it and placed it in the basket with the other.

“Hello,” She greeted cordially, neither inviting nor dismissive, though her attention was upon the hook she was carefully re-baiting. Behind her, Queenie and Saph had dropped the piece of meat they had been playing with, and were watching Vaeyla curiously. Queenie looked disgruntled at someone coming to their private spot; Saph was sulking, but was distracted when he realised he could steal the piece of meat he’d been tugging against Queenie with, and the little blue grabbed it before dodging as Queenie caught on to the sneak attack. The two firelizards took to the air, Queenie screeching and Saph clearly amused as he darted about, keeping just ahead of Queenie.

“Normally no one is,” Indivara agreed, glancing at her bickering firelizards and then dismissing them. Venseth was watching Nadioth curiously as he remained lounging in the sunshine. Indivara didn’t have much to do with the goldriders, which meant that Venseth had very little reason to mingle with them. Apparently Indivara had once been on good terms with a goldrider, but she had passed away and Indivara didn’t like to think of her or be reminded of the fact. Venseth chose to leave well enough alone. At any rate, the young gold was a figure of curiosity to him, and he lifted his head as he watched her with one eye.

Good morning, Nadioth, Venseth greeted, his voice warm and mellow. Softly spoken as a rule, and with a voice deep and husky, Venseth often sounded as if he was flirting and the overall effect was quite different from Indivara’s more high-pitched and demanding voice. Would you like to sun with me?

“The fish are biting this morning,” Indivara turned to look at Vaeyla once more, her eyebrows arching slightly on her scarred face. “Do you know how to cook them?” Indivara was trying to be, if not friendly, at least not offensive. Despite that, her voice and words came out demanding and her expression was flat as she stared up at the goldrider.

She offered a smile at the greeting, though it wasn't an overly friendly one. She would take the acknowledgement over scorn or being ignored any day. She straightened the loose tunic that hung over a light brown pair of pants. As usual, she felt a little self conscious about her appearance. She often felt out of place or out of fashion she supposed. Don't be absurd. You're perfect as you are. Thank you, love You're welcome. Dark eyes turned to see her dragon swimming about as if she hadn't a care in the world. Of course not. I only care for you and myself, and we are fine. Vee smiled and shook her head ever so slightly before turning back to where Indivara sat fishing.

The agreement that the area was generally vacant told her that this was one of her preferred locations, even though she wasn't living at Ista. "It's a favorite place of mine, though I do not get to come often enough.", she told her quietly as she walked about, looking for a place to lounge. It wasn't hard to understand why Indivara liked the spot, even with all the rocks and ledges. Most people avoided it for the sandy beaches on the other side of the island, but that was too crowded. Vee wasn't overly fond of being crowded for long periods of time, if it wasn't something that was required. She smiled as she watched the blue rider's firelizards fighting over a chunk of meat and wondered where Digger was. Just like that, he popped out of Between and circled her before landing on her shoulder. He pressed his head against her cheek as he wrapped his tail around her arm. He watched the other two firelizards with interest but remained on her shoulder as she scratched him lightly.

She felt Nadioth's interest in something and found that she had quit swimming and was leaving the water slowly, but stopped before her paws touched the sand, and was looking at Venseth. Be. Nice., she reminded her dragon, who sent her a small feeling of annoyance. Good Morning to you as well, Venseth., responded politely. Her tone was soft and gentle but friendly none the less. Contrary to her rider's concerns she actually didn't mind most dragons, as long as they weren't rude or bothersome. She and her rider spent their days with golds and bronzes, so she was unfamiliar with most of the other dragons, except to know their named and their rider's. This particular blue seemed to have some manners in his head, for which she was grateful and approved of.

She rumbled softly and flicked her tail back and forth in the water as she considered his invitation. She did enjoy laying in the sun, she particularly liked how the sun warmed her and make her hide shine. I would be glad to join you. Thank you., she answered after she thought about it. She stood in the shallows, deciding if she really wanted to walk across the sand. She really didn't want to, sand between the toes would be an annoyance, however flying the short distance would be a waste of energy. She left the water finally and picked her way as gingerly as she could across sand and rocks, making her way to where Venseth was resting in the sun. She lay near enough that she didn't seem like she didn't want to be near him, but far enough away that she could comfortably spread her wings out and not hit him. She rumbled happily at the feel of the warm sun on her hide.

Vaeyla had taken her eyes off Indivara long enough to watch Nadioth as he had moved to lay near the blue. She smirked just a little as she had watched her pick and choose where she stepped. There would be a bath in her future later in the day. As soon as possible. I already feel filthy. You didn't have to swim first., she teased her dragon. Nadioth ignored her, which had made Vee shake her head, and instead turned her attention to the dragon before her. Does your rider like to tease you as mine does me?

Pulling her eyes from Nadioth again as a breeze came off the ocean. Vee closed her eyes and smiled as the wind swept over her, bringing with it the smell of water and salt to her, and the crashing of waves against the rocks elevating her mood even more. When Indivara spoke again she opened her eyes and looked over at her. She had very rarely seen her up close, the scars on her face were a heavy reminder of what she had been through. Vee made a point to not pay any attention to them, or as little as possible, which wasn't easy considering she had to look at her, to speak to her. "Oh, well that's good. Can't really go wrong with fish.", she replied pleasantly. She lifted a brow at her next question, a small grin twitched the left side of her lips up. "If it's a big enough catch to be worth cooking, then yes, I can cook them.", she answered, her tone friendly and maybe slightly teasing. She didn't know too many women that's couldn't cook fish, at least not the ones from Katilla.  I will never understand why you humans insist on ruining fish by cooking them, commented from her sun spot. I will attempt to explain it to you some day. Lovely, was all she received in response.

Indivara turned to look up at Vaeyla, lifting her eyebrows slightly at the information that was given to her. She wasn’t really surprised that the goldrider didn’t get out much; none of them did. It was one of the many reason Indivara was glad she had Impressed to a blue. Even a green would be better than bonding to a gold, and all that her bright sunny hide would entail. Yes, it was much more relaxing to be bonded to beautiful blue Venseth, even if Indivara was the mockery of all the other riders. Well, screw them.

Venseth watched with great (if carefully hidden) amusement. He was, after all, bonded to Indivara and if nothing else she was an excellent example of how women did not like to be laughed at, regardless of how funny their actions might be. That didn’t stop the blue from sharing his deep amusement with Indivara as the young gold dragon tip-toed across the sand to join him. I can only imagine the fights you would have with your mind occupied with a gold dragon, Venseth intoned, amused, and Indivara glanced towards the two sunning dragons, a smile on her lips. Indeed, she agreed, loving that Venseth was so secure in their bond that he could even imagine her with some other mythical dragon.

Venseth turned his attention to Nadioth as she spoke to him, and he considered her words carefully for several moments. No, he said simply, but his voice was gently tinged with his amusement. I do most of the teasing, he confided, shifting so that he could look at Indivara with fondness. He loved his prickly, temperamental rider and would not change her for the entire world! She was too much fun, and he found her so easy to love, and took great pride in the love she had in return for him. She was so much more than most people seemed to see.

“You can cook, then,” Indivara stated firmly, and shifted to hold the fishing pole with her knees so she could shift the basket of collected fish towards Vaeyla. It was filled with enough salt water for the fish to be kept fresh, but their eyes were glazed in death. There were several of them, of a good solid size, within. “I was going to take what I don’t eat to the kitchens,” Indivara said mildly, picking through the basket. “There is a firepit I’ve used over there.” And she pointed slightly to the left, where a few rocks were gathered and she’d already loaded up several branches for burning. It hadn’t been lit, but was all set to go.

Nadioth rumbled quietly at the given answer as she considered his words. Interesting. Your rider likes this?, Nadioth questioned as she lifted a forepaw, only to drop it again on random spiderclaw that had come out from under a rock. She hadn't thought about the mess squishing the thing would cause and her disgust flooded through Vee so strongly that she snapped her attention from Indivara to her dragon, silently questioning her dragon, then covering her mouth to hide the laughter, which was pointless considering she knew Nadioth would feel her amusement. It's not funny. Oh, yes it is. Just lick your paw clean silly!, she told her with amusement then had to redouble her efforts not to laugh out loud, it was bad enough she giggled as she was flooded with firm annoyance from across the way. I will do no such thing., the gold told her, then proceeded to scrape the dead thing off her paw as gracefully as possible.

Vee shook her head again and turned back to Indivara with an apologetic smile and said, "Sorry". It was her turn to lift her brow then, as she was, not necessarily rudely told but told nonetheless, that she could cook the fish the bluerider had caught. "Is that so?", Vee asked in return, though she was really more amused that she, unlike everyone else, seemed to not care one cracked shell about her being a goldrider. She wasn't entirely sure she cared for the bossy and bold personality, but her tone hadn't held any malice so she let herself simply be amused by it.

She is rude., chimed in, her attention on the humans again, her annoyance growing quickly. She's not rude, just bold. She owes you respect! Calm., she told the gold firmly. Respect should be earned, not just given., she said as she glanced over at the firepit Indivara had indicated. I am not some flighty green, you are a goldrider and should be treated as such. Vee huffed softly. 'I promise, if I feel she is being rude and disrespectful I will say something. Please just enjoy the sun and Venseth's company, okay?' The gold sulked but said, Fine.

She shook her head at her dragon again then shrugged at Indivara and gave a slight grin as she took the basket of fish. "Alright then, but I might just burn yours out of spite.", she said, her tone full of sarcasm and empty threat as she carried the basket over to the firepit. "I am sure the kitchen would have appreciated the catch, although we do eat plenty of fish as it is, so I doubt anything eaten will be missed.", she said casually as she made quick work of gathering additional dry sticks and grasses for the fire before setting about lighting the fire.
