Casa looked up from the paperwork she was completing – allocation of foods within the Weyr – at the knock on the doorframe. The door itself was open, as Casa didn’t particularly enjoy feeling trapped, and she was disinclined to make people feel as if they couldn’t come to her, if they needed to. Not that many people did, but that wasn’t really the point.

“Yes?” She asked, frowning slightly when she realised she was looking at a weyrbrat who was puffing, and holding a note in one hand. She smiled slightly as the child came forward and gave it to her, and Casa thanked him politely before turning to the note.

What is it?

“Okalinath’s clutch Hatched.” Casa said after reading the note, taking in the totals and new Impressions that were listed with interest.  The number of gold flights seemed to be slowing down as the population of dragons grew, which was both good and a little saddening. It was fun, seeing new dragonets every couple of months, but Casa wasn’t sure that Pern could support ongoing Hatchings at such a frequent rate.

A shame we could not attend, Thallyath said mildly, and Casa could hear the young gold dragon shifting in the sun that was coming in their weyr where she was perched, the rustling of hide on stone was soothing. Casa gently put the note aside and stood, brushing her skirt pants out and smoothing down her top.

“I take it I was the first goldrider the child could find,” she mumbled, partly to herself and partly to Thallyath. “Do you know where the Weyrleaders are? I feel they should probably be informed of the new Telgar arrivals.” To be fair, the child probably should have simply asked Casa herself where the Weyrleaders were and continued on with the note to them; typical child, really, to palm it off on the first person that was more or less appropriate.

Considering it is midday, they are probably eating. Thallyath’s tart reply had Casa sighing slightly and she shook her head, brushing her blonde hair away from her face as she picked up the letter, and her completed paperwork; she needed to pass that over to Ameris for approval, as well.

“Thank you, Thallyath.” She replied, rolling her eyes, and left her weyr to hunt out the Weyrleaders. Her gold had made a good point, and Casa decided to try her luck in the dining hall first. Since Mizeath wasn’t sandbound, that meant neither she nor Ameris would be on the Sands. Casa didn’t imagine they enjoyed spending unneeded time in the hot cavern; as much as she wished Thallyath would Fly, Casa wasn’t really looking forward to her dragon being sandbound, broody and bored. She was quite snark enough on the best of days.

Entering the Dining Hall, Casa paused just in the doorway and looked over the heads, finally seeing what looked like the Weyrleaders. Excusing herself from a couple of cheerful Weyrlings, Casa made her way over to M’ris and Ameris, smiling slightly and waiting politely for a break in their conversation to interrupt.

“We got word from Telgar,” she said lightly, placing the letter on the table between the couple so they could decide who would read it first. “Okalinath’s clutch Hatched successfully.”

M'ris had been enjoying a rather peaceful lunch with Ameris, a rarity to be sure. They were both kept busy with their duties and for some reason being in charge meant he was now ridiculously popular and everyone wanted a moment of his time. M'ris could be rather sociable when the mood struck him but he longed for his solitude and being able to wander off when he was bored with a Gather or even a simple conversation at a meal. The mere fact that he liked spending time with Ameris and even cared for her shook him to the core. He hadn't felt much of anything since Sarendall died in the exile and he had vowed to never let anyone get close to him again so he could save himself the pain of loss once more. Yet somehow Ameris had charmed him in her own ways and he now looked forward to a simple lunch together.

That was why Casa, the annoyingly eager young goldrider that always seemed to be underfoot, was shot a glare when she waltzed up to their table and stood there for some sort of cue that she could speak. M'ris was content to ignore her, just as he was wont to do with all the young ones roaming around that they were supposed to train for the future or some such excuse to always have someone lingering around, but Ameris was nicer than he was and she paused their admittedly mundane chat so Casa could present whatever it was she was holding.

When the paper was set on the table, M'ris grabbed at it first and shot yet another annoyed look at Casa, "so I can read," he replied to her summary of the document. What was the point of handing him the paper if she was going to blurt out the news? Kids these days didn't seem to have a sense of patience. He'd have to come up with some tasks and training for the golds and bronzes to work on to help with that. If they wanted any level of leadership, they'd have to learn patience and some sort of understanding. He wasn't really the best model of that but he knew enough to fake it when it mattered at least.

"I'll head out in the evening to offer my congratulations in person," it would give him a break from his own Weyr and people and offer him a chance to unwind for a few hours and catch up with old friends. He should honestly visit Fort Weyr as well but R'nya's mentor, ex-rider Jajojin, kind of scared him. M'ris remembered the man not only from Katila before the loss of Denath but from High Reaches pre-plague as well. After all, Jajojin, formerly J'jin, was his Weyrleader for five years before the plague struck. It was hard to see the man as he was now; somewhat broken and a bit crazy. He couldn't understand how the man got out of bed every day without his dragon and M'ris hoped to never find out.

Jenn, feel free to jump in with Ameris inviting Casa to join them lol I'm sure she can get away with scolding M'ris or ignoring his mood XD

Life always had a way of making sure Ameris came out on top. First survival in the south, then Mizeath and then this. She had no problem considering what she had, even if it was only fleeting, with M'ris coming out on top. For all his gruff mannerisms there was simply something about the bronzerider that she was drawn too. Maybe it was his ability to bludgeon everything over the head with apparent ease while she herself tried for diplomacy that made her eyes sparkle with mischief and hands to cover grins. They made for a cohesive partnership and Ameris found she quite enjoyed it. The addition of their daughter helped too. Eris was a delight and Ameris wouldn't trade her for the world.

She was sipping at a cup of klah when Casa approached their table. The girl was bright and sunny, her dragon a good match for the girl and neither Ameris or Mizeath could find fault with them.  Not that Mizeath had much to say about the rest of the golds in the weyr, many were too young to be much competition, Mizeath was queen bee and she knew it. I am no where near as bad as that, the gold gave a gruntled response that had Ameris grinning into her cup. Certainly m'dear, Ameris told as Casa began speaking. She'd known Okalinath had clutched, her own missive on the event long discarded but the goldrider had expected a slightly longer wait than it was. "I thought for sure it would be at least another fortnight," she murmured.

"Really, M'ris," she said as she rolled her eyes at his behavior when he snatched at the paper Casa had placed on the table. Never one to enjoy being interrupted as much as he did, Ameris knew this was his punishment for the young girl. She would make it better though, "Why don't you sit Casa and have some fruit and some klah?" Ameris was very good at being diplomatic. She hadn't been a long time ago, preferring to snap and snarl her way through life but Mizeath had changed all that. Being in charge of a weyr changed all that. "How are you liking life at Ista? Besides weyrleaders who like to grump all day?" the last was said with a raised brow and a poorly concealed grin. Perhaps she could convince him to take her along on his visit to Telgar. It had been much too long since she'd visited with some of the older goldriders.

Casa’s bright expression didn’t cloud in the slightest at M’ris’ dour mood; the first few times the Weyrleader had been sour around her, Casa had taken it personally, getting quite upset about having upset the Weyrleader, but also someone she rather idolised. It had taken reassurance from Ameris that it wasn’t personal on a personal level. Or something. At any rate, Casa had cheered up when she realised it wasn’t just she that got on the bronzerider’s nerves. Thallyath had scolded her for being so self-centred.

He young goldrider’s cheerful expression brightened at Ameris’ invitation. Once upon a time, she would have been awkward and unsure about whether or not to accept, and certainly would have been cowed by the Weyrleader’s dismissal. As it was, to Thallyath’s snort, Casa flashed a quick smile at Ameris in thanks, and settled herself down beside the older goldrider, politely taking enough fruit to appease the invitation, without taking so much as to be considered a glutton or over reaching her invitation (though she had no doubt that M’ris would be displeased regardless.)

Casa’s sunny smile flashed again, and she nibbled delicately on a slice of fruit. “I love it!” It was kind of like living at Katila still – the beach was right there, albeit with salt water instead of the fresh water of Katila’s lake side location – and it was weather wasn’t so different. “The beaches are so pretty, and Thally likes sunning on them so I can go swimming.” She paused and pouted playfully. “But she refuses to budge until I’ve finished my tasks.” Hmph. If it weren’t for me you’d be little better than a greenrider, flittering around without an anchor. Casa ignored her dragon’s tart input.

While he wasn't privy to Thallyath's comment, M'ris echoed it all the same as he took stock of the young goldrider. "At least one of you is taking your responsibilities seriously," if Casa had been around in his younger years, she would have laughed at that statement. He wasn't always the most responsible of men both on and off duty but he, again, could fake it in front of the right people. This girl seemed to have rocks in her head if she thought gushing about the beach and giving cutesy pouts about not being allowed to be lazy was acceptable. He definitely needed to come up with tasks to keep the young riders focused and grow into their supposed potential.

Deciding perhaps it was better to currently ignore the girl and see if she'd go away, though Ameris likely wouldn't let it happen, M'ris turned to his beautiful companion. "It occurs to me that you haven't been outside the Weyr for a while either. Would m'lady like to escort me to Telgar Weyr?" A devilish grin as he popped a piece of fruit into his mouth suggested that perhaps a detour on the way home could be arranged for a little extra time away for just the two of them.

After a moment's pause he added, "Blondie here could even play baby-sitter and watch Eris for the night." He slid a glance to Casa, daring her to say no to the obvious challenge issued. Could she be responsible enough to take care of the child of her leaders? Or would she pass the charge off to someone else so she could go play like a weyrbrat? Of course he'd still have someone else occasionally checking up on them since he had no desire to put his baby girl in danger.

Ameris would have laughed outright had she been privy to his thoughts, but as it were she merely grinned a little more widely at his statement. She'd known Casa before the girl had impressed Thallyath and knew how wild and carefree she had been. Not that Ameris could begrudge the girl her moments running wild through the weyr, there had been a few wild moments for her as well though she'd been born before the move south. These wild Katila born 'brats had brought life to the makeshift weyr and Ameris could be grateful for it. "Being responsible is all fine and dandy but the girl's got to have a little fun in there too," she said tongue in cheek. The comment earned her a harrumph from Mizeath, though it was mostly the atrocious structure of the sentence than the words themselves, and Ameris grinned around her own fruit.

"Ista is quite lovely," she replied, "Mizeath doesn't mind a few days sun bathing on those pretty beaches. She's gotten pretty lazy lately what with the rolling around in the sand and sun. Might have to put that gold to work." Mizeath muttered in her mind of lazy riders and offensive natures and she winked before chuckling, "Sounds to me that you were the perfect choice for Thallyath. A good balance even if she doesn't let you have all the fun."

She started lightly when M'ris voiced her very thoughts and a happy blush stole up her cheeks. "Very much so," she answered with a sparkle in her eyes. She most certainly would not mind a detour or two and it was apparent in the look she gave him. She eyed Casa from the corner of her eye, to challenge Casa just the same as M'ris put his suggestion to her. She almost wanted Casa to deny his demand nearly as much as she wanted her to agree. It would be interesting to see what the bright young goldrider was capable of. It was never to early to learn to have a spine when it came to demanding bronzeriders. "Well Casa?" she asked lightly, putting her own demand out, "What do you say? Are you willing to watch Eris while we visit Telgar?"

Casa glanced politely at the Weyrleader when he spoke, keeping her features her usual mix of polite and sunny. His words would have stung, if she hadn’t been hearing them every day for the past couple of Turns from Thallyath; the dragon really knew how to add poison to her tart comments, so M’ris’ just slid off Casa’s cheerful shoulder’s without leaving a mark. Bright eyes turned to Ameris as she spoke, and she grinned in response to the comment about Thallyath being a good match for her.

“She’s a grumpy workaholic,” she laughed, nabbing another piece of fruit. Her tone carried all her love for the gold dragon, however, contrasting to the negative statement. Thallyath was constantly harping on about something or the other, demanding Casa do this or that, reminding her to stand tall and sit straight; to wear dresses and curtsy correctly. To take small steps, because running is for children and long strides are for men. Casa was not looking forward to her dragon getting proddy.

It was a good thing Ameris spoke her name, because Casa had been lost in her own world of thoughts until the elder godlrider called her back. Casa blinked up at Ameris, realising both she and the Weyrleader were watching her (albeit with vastly different expressions) and she flushed, realising she’d missed an important question. Thallyath made a snide comment in the back of her mind, not bothering to dig her rider out of the pit she’d unintentionally fallen into. Thankfully, Ameris saved her, though whether by design or not could be debated.

“I’d be honoured,” she answered truthfully, looking between the two adults and wondering how she had just ended up babysitting their infant. Obviously they didn’t want to take little Eris to Telgar (Casa didn’t think taking an infant between would be very good for it,) but she wasn’t sure how she had ended up being their defacto babysitter. She would have rather tagged along on the visit to the other Weyr – she and Thallyath didn’t get to go on many outings, mostly because Thallyath was a bore and felt they were more use on their home soil.

“When did you want me to watch her?” she wasn’t sure who to direct the question to, and her bright gaze switched between M’ris and Ameris curiously.

She was a little disappointed when Casa didn't put up much of a fight. She sighed inwardly, maybe she shouldn't have wanted Casa to fight with her weyrleaders. It was bad practice for such things, but Ameris knew Casa wasn't much of a fighter and she wanted the girl to learn how to speak up when she didn't want to do something. Thallyath would help her, Ameris knew, but she couldn't always lean on her dragon as a crutch. Showing a little backbone was good for you. Gave one character where they might have missed it otherwise. Oh give over Ameris. Maybe she just likes babies, her dragon commented in her mind and Ameris mentally scoffed. She doubted it.

She glanced at M'ris to gauge his reaction before looking back at Casa. She pursed her lips as she thought about her answer. Now would be lovely, but neither of them were ready for a visit to Telgar and while Eris was well with the creche workers, Ameris had a hard time leaving her alone for long. A hold over from her years caring for Rislan alone she had no doubt. An hour should do. "Are you willing to take her in an hour? Hour and a half at the latest?" she asked, perhaps a bit mischievously. Maybe now Casa would refuse. Demand a new time. It was difficult to keep the look of triumph off her face, Ameris thought she had this in the bag.

"What do you say, M'ris?" she turned to ask the bronzerider, "Wanna go to Telgar in an hour?"

M'ris silently watched the girls, wondering exactly what it was he had started. He didn't think Casa would accept or would at least be a bit more flustered at the idea. Ameris wasn't too shocking; he knew she had a mischievous side and would play along with any teasing he did, so long as it wasn't too mean and might upset the fragile flower sitting with them. He was only surprised by how quickly Ameris wanted to go. Perhaps her day was a bit lighter than his, but then, maybe it wasn't and this was the perfect excuse to get away from everyone. He knew he needed a break from his so-called mentor and Ameris had more than one complaint regularly about Alcynnia so ditching their duties was a bit thrilling on multiple levels. It showed them being caring Weyrleaders, interested in the affairs of their peers while also shoving their responsibilities aside and running off like the errant brat he kept accusing Casa of being.

He took a moment to search Ameris' face to see if he could read if she really did want to go as soon as possible and decided she'd be fine with anything and it was more to see what Casa would do if given a time crunch to work under. He'd personally prefer a little longer to make sure the Weyr wouldn't burn down while he was away but an hour was something he could work with. Given the letter mentioned two dragonets couldn't find their bonded and went between made it a bit more prudent to put in an appearance and offer condolences and join in for a drink of mourning and a few more for celebrating the joyous occasion that so many more found their lifemates.

Finally he gave a nod. "An hour sounds reasonable. I'll alert the necessary people and let them know not to expect us back until late," i they were able to escape for a bit, M'ris had no intentions of returning early. He'd enjoy the time away with Ameris as much as he could. "You can handle an evening, can't you, Blondie?"

Casa’s face lost a lot of its colour; an hour? They wanted her to look after the baby in an hour? Casa didn’t know the first thing about babies! She’d been hoping for a day or two. At least then she could scope out the crèche and make sure she wouldn’t fuck up while she was looking after the child. Faranth, what had she gotten herself into now? An hour?

Oh, quit being so dramatic. You said you’d watch the child, and you will not go back on what you said. So sit up straight and tell the woman that you’d be delighted. Casa would have cringed at the acidic tone of her dragon’s voice, but she was putting too much thought into sitting up straight, with her shoulders back, and flashing a bright grin that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She could do this! Thallyath said she could, and well, she’d manage somehow, surely! It wasn’t likely they’d leave her completely alone with the infant, was it? I doubt it. You’re little more than a child yourself. Thanks, Casa retorted dryly, though her dragon was right.

“Yes sir!,” Casa responded brightly to M’ris, though inside she felt slightly ill. A whole evening? How late was late? How long could the infant go without her mother for? When would they be back. Oh Faranth she was already wanting them to come back and they hadn’t even left yet! Casa’s left foot jiggled anxiously under the table, the only expression of her distress. Thallyath sighed You will be fine. How hard can it possibly be to look after a creature that can’t even move on it’s own? Really Casa, you are being so dramatic.
