Humming under her breath, Madiquel skipped cheerfully down the corridor, her slipper clad feet whispering over the stone, her left hand brushing against the side of the wall, skimming over the bumps and smooth stone as it passed under her fingertips. On her right shoulder, safely away from the wall, little green Clover sat with her tail wrapped firmly around Madiquel’s neck and her little body pressed tightly against Madiquel’s cheek. She didn’t particularly enjoy the bouncing gait her human was in the midst of, but she didn’t want to fly, and so she settled for the jostling.

Madiquel, who was a naturally bright eyed child, had just finished her daily lessons with the Harpers, and was on her way to the freedom of the grounds around the Weyr lake, hoping to settle down somewhere in the sunshine so she could bathe and oil Clover without getting under the feet of any dragonriders – or be spotted by anyone inclined to give her chores to do. Smiling brightly to herself, Madiquel paused at a cross section so that she wouldn’t unintentionally bump into someone and go flying, before continuing outside, blinking owlishly in the bright light of the afternoon sun. Giving her head a little toss, and shading her eyes while they grew used to the light, Madiquel made her way towards a large tree, a favourite she had chosen since arriving in the Weyr.

Dropping her small bag by the tree’s trunk, Madiquel then skipped her way towards the edge of the lake, a small brush in one hand and a container of soapsands in the other. Stopping at the edge of the water, the girl pulled off her slippers and hiked her skirt up, tucking it into her belt so that the hem was about knee length instead of ankle length. Wading slightly into the edge water of the large, cool, lake, Madiquel gently brought a chirping Clover from her shoulder and began to wash the delighted firelizard, getting soap suds everywhere but managing to make sure her little companion was clean before they both made their way back towards the tree, Madiquel making the wet Clover fly, rather than get her still more wet than the splashing had done.

Reaching the tree once more, Madiquel sat down under the dappled leaves, and dug out her small container of oil. Crooning with delight, Clover quickly settled herself on the ground between Madiquel’s knees, peering up at the young girl with adoration as Madiquel began to carefully apply the oil, making sure to get into the spots that were prone to drying out and cracking. Clover hummed her appreciation the whole time, carefully extending wings and legs so Madiquel could properly oil her hide.

Kadaisicalth watched the girl bathe her firelizard for several minutes, amused at the way the little green chirped and shivered or splashed her mate. He was also amused by how little his rider seemed to notice what was going on around him. Of course if R'dal was there with them, he'd be even more distracted. The pair of friends often seemed inseparable and Kadaisicalth often wondered if time apart from each other was needed more often. They were both on the awkward side but friendly, though they didn't spend a lot of their down time with a wide variety of people. Perhaps now was a time to change that. Someone else is here, you know,

R'dare wasn't known for being the most observant boy in the Weyr and he proved it yet again when he didn't notice Madiquel come up to the edge of the lake, not far from where he was lounging against his dragon, Kadaisicalth. To be fair, they weren't exactly out in the open and the blue dragon made a better door than a window so R'dare felt he could be excused for staying in his daydream-like state as he stared up at the branches of the trees closest to the beach line as he fiddled with his lower lip.

"Hm?" R'dare finally sat up and peered over Kadaisicalth's tail that he had been using as a pillow. He found the familiar shape of Madiquel and smiled at her task at hand. "Madi and Clover! You should have said something sooner," he gave his dragon a playful smack to his tail before standing up and brushing the sand off of his shorts. He had bathed the big blue earlier and had decided to sun himself as well, especially since washing a dragon wasn't exactly a job that kept you dry.

R'dare meandered over in only his shorts and a thin layer of sand on his back that he couldn't reach to brush off and called out a chipper greeting. Just before reaching his target, R'dare misstepped on the uneven sand and found himself tripping and landing on his knees. He laughed, used to his random clumsiness that seemed to strike at random and liked to leave him with just as random bruising, and got back up to finish his trek. Kadaisicalth sighed at his rider but rumbled with gentle laughter all the same. While it was actually a bit of an endearing quality of R'dare's, Kadaisicalth couldn't help but be glad the boy wasn't constantly living in a state of face-planting into the floor.

Madiquel looked up, head tilted slightly to one side. She was sure she had heard her name, but a quick surreptitious glance around didn’t betray anyone as seeking out her attention. Shrugging slightly to herself, Madiquel looked back down at her little green firelizard, who was busy scolding her for stopping the attentions of her bath. She laughed softly and refocused her attention, teasing the little firelizard with playful tones. The sudden greeting being called out to her had the girl’s head lifting and she grinned widely at R’dare, lifting one oily hand to wave.

Bright, playful laughter bubbled up when R’dare toppled to his knees on his way over, her eyes sparkling; she had long since stopped worrying about her friend and his clumsiness – if he were hurt, she would know it. Shifting her gaze, Madiquel sought out the great blue dragon that was bonded to her friend and smiled at Kadaisicalth with fond affection. Unlike some of the weyrbrats, Madiquel was not jealous of her dragonriding friends; she had no real desire to Impress herself, and saw no need to be jealous of the magnificent creatures when she could be their friends.

“Hello, Dare!” She greeted, shifting her attention back to the young bluerider, even as Clover finally gave up expecting Madiquel to return to her oiling – she had been completely oiled, they were just revealing in the mutual enjoyment of contact – and curled up happily in Madiquel’s lap, chirping cheerfully at R’dare, flicking her wing slightly so that they flared out and soaked up the dappled light from through the leaves. “Still fighting the grips of gravity?” She teased, her smile pulling her lips up playfully.

R'dare gave a sheepish laugh as he ran a hand through his hair. He didn't really embarrass easily, especially not over something he'd been doing since he was a kid. It wasn't his fault his head and feet weren't always on the same page and it created interesting results. "Yeah, but that's why I have Daisy," he waved a hand in his dragon's direction, using the playful nickname the blue tolerated most of the time.

I think we're both lucky it's not contagious or we'd be walking everywhere, Kadaisicalth replied back, the smirk quite audible in his words, as he made sure to include Madiquel in the conversation.

"Ouch," R'dare placed a hand over his heart in mock pain before grinning and flopping down beside Madiquel. Clover seemed quite content where she was so he didn't try to tempt her over to his lap but instead rubbed a finger under her chin in greeting. He didn't have his own firelizard, though he had been offered one. At the time, his parents didn't think he had the attention span to take care of one, which was kind of the point of having one before Impressing to a dragon. R'dare didn't mind though; enough of his friends had them so he helped out here and there and he'd always helped look after his dad's dragon when it came time to bathing and oiling so it wasn't like he was completely blind to the challenges of being a dragonrider.

"You missed R'dal. He was here earlier as well but having a dad for Weyrleader puts a damper on lazy day activities, I guess, even if we're not a part of his Weyr. He didn't tell me but I think he actually got stuck playing baby-sitter for his new little sister," R'dare knew he was something of an anomaly given that his parents had stayed together for so long and he only had one sister and didn't seem to have any half-siblings running around. He wondered what it was like for T'ryn, having so many siblings thanks to his dad and R'nd not even knowing about most of them. He thought it was pretty cool of R'dal to help out when he was visiting his dad, though he wondered how much of that time baby-sitting was spent having mutual nap times.

"Do you have any plans for the rest of the day?" If he could get away with it, R'dare was happy to stay right where he was until evening meal, and even then that was debatable if he'd make it.

Madiquel laughed gently, as entertained by hearing the nickname R’dare used on his dragon as by the dragon’s quip. It wasn’t the first time she’d heard him call the gorgeous blue ‘Daisy’, but it was something that nevertheless entertained her every time. The blue dragon looked nothing like the flower, unlike Clover who was at least as green as the floral she was named after. Madiquel looked down as R’dare scratched at the little beastie’s chin, and her gentle smile lingered as Clover hummed her approval.

Madiquel’s nose scrunched up in response to the mention of R’dal’s work ethic. “Yeah,” she drawled, thinking of her own father. She had the benefit of not being a dragonrider, and she was mostly left to her own devices, especially if there were no events going on or requirements for the weyrbrats to help out. At fourteen, Madiquel was in the awkward stage between being considered a child still, and being treated like a woman. Mostly, she took advantage of that and got away with playing games and lounging around lazily like the children, even though she was technically considered an adult and had been since twelve, like all youngsters. “I’m sure we’ll cross paths at some point.” It was not use getting too upset about it, though she did miss her dragonriding friends when they were kept busy for too many days straight.

“Not really,” she replied, petting Clover with gentle strokes as the green lizard hummed and chirped in delight. “Primarily I plan to avoid being roped into chores,” and she grinned, eyes sparkling mischeviously.

"Good. Then you can dodge duties out here with me. If anyone finds us, we'll say we've just finished bathing Daisy and were taking a rest," R'dare grinned wickedly at his friend, not at all worried about her ratting him out if it did come down to being caught slacking off. She wasn't about to accuse him of holding her hostage and it was close enough to the truth that even his blue lie-detector wouldn't huff that much.

R'dare leaned back, intent on stretching out so he could stare up at the sunlight peeking through the leaves, he paused long enough to pull out a sharp rock and a twig that were rudely in his space. That taken care of, the position was nabbed, arms going behind his head to act as a pillow. He was quiet for a moment, content to watch the leaves rustle in the light breeze. Finally he glanced back over at Madiquel and asked the question they'd all avoided for a while given her age.

"Have you thought more about Standing when they let you?" R'dare hated the rule that had Madiquel waiting longer than he and his male friends had to before being allowed to Stand. She was three years younger than him but most of the time she seemed like the older one. She was mature and wise in her own way and any dragon would be lucky to have that. Why did they have to wait to find out about her? Not that it seemed to bother Madiquel. She seemed to be in no hurry for such things and enjoyed the benefits of youth and not being bonded. He supposed that might have something to do with taking care of her father after the landslide when Jajojin's dragon perished. Being bonded himself now for a few years, R'dare wasn't sure how he functioned without Kadaisicalth and was convinced he wouldn't be able to if the dragon left him behind.

“Sounds like a plan to me,” she agreed easily, liking the idea of using her friend and his dragon as an excuse to avoid real work. It wasn’t that she was against doing chores, so much as she wasn’t in the mood that day and liked the idea of being a laze-about a lot more. She hadn’t slept very well the night before - reoccurring nightmares about the landslide still plagued her - and she’d woken up grumpy and sour. While the hours since she’d rolled out of bed had mulled her mood and finally it had began to pick up, she still had that fear niggling at the back of her neck, and occasionally giving her goose bumps.

Content to let the silence envelope them, Madiquel was slightly surprised when R’dare broke it, and she looked at him with her head tilted slightly to one side, before the weight of his words fell over her and took shape. Madiquel sighed, her lips pulling down slightly in a frown. On her lap, little Clover purred reassuringly, and Madiquel pet her absent mindedly.

“No,” she answered at last, her single word full of resignation and honesty. “Every time I do, Papa has a bad day, or I have a nightmare about the landslide, or some other such.” She wasn’t looking at R’dare, focused as she was on her lap where Clover sat, though she didn’t really see the little firelizard. She looked up, eyebrows drawn together in a frown as she met R’dare’s eyes. “I don’t think I could do that to Papa,” she admitted, not for the first time. It was one thing, to be friends with the dragons her friends were bonded to. But how could she Bond to a dragonet? Not when her Papa still needed her so much. More than a dragonet would ever need her.

He had known the answer before even asking the question. It was something they'd all discussed since some of them started to Impress. And while he certainly didn't fault her for that way of thinking or even think less of her for not wanting a dragon, R'dare wished she'd be open to the idea sooner rather than later. Madiquel was emotionally strong but he knew from experience how having that bond with a dragon was soothing and reassuring. She could relax around a dragon, like he saw her do with Clover to a lesser extent.

At the familiar reasoning for why she didn't want to Impress, R'dare sat up enough to lean on an elbow and reach out a hand to gently place on her arm, ensuring he kept her attention. "I think he'd understand when the day came that you want one. He's super ancient and had like a million amazing years with Denath; he'd want that for you to experience too." He gave her arm a light reassuring squeeze before dropping back to the ground, hands going up to play pillow again.

"And you know Rist and I will be cheering from the sidelines when you do Stand... and Impress at your first clutch. They'd all be crazy to pass you by." R'dare gave her a sly grin, showing his confidence in her. She made friends easily and a dragonet would be drawn to her just as quickly.

"I bet you'd ride blue," he couldn't see her on gold. Not that she wasn't a leader or a girly girl, it was just that --well, he couldn't even explain what the differences were but he suspected paperwork all day wouldn't appeal to her if nothing else. "Can you imagine yourself as a greenrider? That could lead to some interesting flights." R'dare laughed good naturedly as he thought about R'dal and himself giving chase to their friend. What if one won? What if neither did? Would they get protective over Madiquel and judge the winner and how he had treated her?

Blue. She'd hopefully ride blue.

At the light touch to her arm, Madiquel started slightly, but smiled wanly when she looked down and saw R’dare’s earnest expression. She wasn’t sure she really agreed with his reasoning. While most dragonriders wanted their children to experience the wonder of a bond, she was fairly sure the very real risk of losing that bond and suffering like her father did… Well. It wasn’t something she wanted, and she wasn’t really sure that the bond would outweigh the risk. Besides, she had several Turns yet before she could Stand.

Shifting to cradle Clover, Madiquel shuffled to lay down beside R’dare. She settled Clover on her chest, where the firelizard purred and curled up happily, Madiquel petting her absently. “I have no doubt,” she replied dryly, imagining the boys and their blues standing on the lower ledges of the Hatching Grounds and waving their arms around and cheering loudly. She giggled softly at the image, and shook her head to herself.

“I don’t know,” she frowned, slipping one arm under her head so her cheek was cradled near her elbow as she looked up at R’dare. “Girl riders don’t really get treated that well. I think I’d prefer gold. I guess it wouldn’t be as exciting, and I know they’re not looked upon as favourably as they were before the Plague – at least that’s what Papa says – but. Oh, I don’t know.” Madiquel didn’t think she’d have what it takes to be the butt of bad jokes and mockery. She’d seen the way Indivara was treated, and that woman must have had a thick hide to take it and let it all slide off her like water off a well oiled hide.

But as a greenrider? “Definitely not!” She said empathically, scrunching her nose up at the idea. If – and that was a strong if – she ever stood, Madiquel was quite sure she’d Stand for gold. Definitely not as exciting as the men’s dragons, but not as jarring as a green or blue!

It took a moment to realize they were on different wave lengths but when it finally did sink in, R'dare sat up again and looked down at Madiquel with his mouth hanging open. "No way! If you were a goldrider, we'd hardly ever see you. You'd be too busy or too good to hang out with us lowly blues," he gave a pout, mostly teasing about how he thought she'd start ignoring them but R'dare did have a creeping bit of doubt over whether they'd actually be able to hang out as much as they currently did. It'd be cool to have a close friend that was a goldrider, assuming she'd still have the power to get them out of trouble or find ways to keep them from doing the lame chores no one liked to do. But he still didn't think Madiquel was the right fit for a gold dragon and hoped she didn't Impress one, even though that would be her best way to constantly Stand.

"Besides, what if we want to have those intersting flights with you as a greenrider?" R'dare waggled his brows and laughed as he laid back down, hoping to entice even the tiniest hint of a blush. He still wasn't sure about her on green either given the way greenriders were treated in and out of flight regardless of gender but a little teasing didn't hurt. And while Madiquel would be appalled at them doing so, R'dare knew he and R'dal would defend her as much as they could despite likely being the least intimidating men around; outside of T'bia anyway. Ayontay and some of the others would likely stay by her side as well.

Madiquel laughed richly at R’dare’s outrage and his pout, rolling her eyes good naturally as Clover gave a squeak of outrage at all the noise. It didn’t seem to occur to the little firelizard that she was just adding to the pollution. Madiquel hushed her, then looked up at R’dare as he spoke again. Her eyes widened dramatically at his implications and the wiggle of his eyebrows, before her whole face lit up like a fire, flushing hotly.

“R’dare!” She gasped, mortified. Echoing her bonded’s emotions, Clove shrieked in outrage, puffing up and taking off, scratching Madiquel’s chest and stomach through her clothes, causing the girl to yelp. Over all, it was a rather noisy response to R’dare’s teasing! Madiquel sat up, crossing her legs and scowling as she peered down the neck of her shirt to make sure there was no blood drawn. Satisfied, she settled on rubbing the stinging location on her belly. “Stupid firelizard,” she groused, though with no real venom. She threw a look of disgust at R’dare, not at all mollified by his response to everything.

“Oh, hush!” she snapped, still burning up from his teasing; would her face never cool back down? It didn’t help at all that she was struggling to find something new to talk about, to deflect the conversation well away from green dragons and flights.

At her yelp in pain, R'dare straightened and looked slightly aghast that he had been the cause of Clover's outburst and accidental clawing. He reached out, intent on taking a look under her shirt as well until he realized halfway through the motion what he was doing. It was one thing to tease his friend but quite another to make such a forward advancement on her. Flushing slightly himself, R'dare quickly set his hand back down on the ground, shifting a bit to make it seem like he had only been getting into a more comfortable position.

Relieved that Madiquel hadn't noticed, intent as she was on checking out her possible injuries, R'dare managed a playful smirk at her attempt to silence him. He gave a little shrug, feigning innocence in the whole matter and let it drop. He didn't mind teasing a friend but didn't like to push too far past what they were comfortable with. He fell into what he thought was comfortable silence between them, enjoying the company and the nature around them. The light rustling of the leaves overhead was always relaxing to him and he had on more than one occasion fallen asleep to it. He was close to doing so then as well but shook it off as he thought it might be a tad rude to nap after being the one to interrupt her time.

Deciding he needed to do something to help shake off any drowsiness, R'dare gave a soft 'hmm' in thought before nodding to himself as he agreed to Kadaisicalth's silent suggestion and jumped to his feet. He once again ignored any clinging sand to his backside and held out his hand to Madiquel. "Let's go flying!" He gazed up at the sky, noting the nice weather but also the position of the sun. They still had a few hours before evening meal when their absence would start to be noticed, especially by Jajojin. It wasn't a good idea to press his stable days by keeping his baby girl off schedule and causing him any undue panic. Unfortunately, a few of them had found that out early on when they kept her out past a curfew they hadn't known about due to swimming too long.

The silence that fell over them had the crackling remnants of awkwardness, but as Clover landed lightly on Madiquel’s knee and crooned an apology and R’dare seemed to wander off into the world of his own thoughts, Madiquel relaxed and a smile once more found its way across her lips. She pet her firelizard, fingers light and gentle on her soft and freshly oiled hide. Smiling gently, Madiquel shifted to lay down; she was halfway to sprawling happily on the sandy grass when R’dare was leaping to his feet and she stared up at him owlishly.

Laughter bubbled free at his half demand, half suggestion, and Clover took flight with a shriek of joy. Madiquel climbed to her feet, taking R’dare’s hand and letting him haul her up. Once her hand was free, Madiquel was brushing her hands over her backside, dusting away the sand. “Okay!” She chirped, not at all against the idea. While she didn’t have any plans to Impress her own dragon, she was more than willing to exploit the dragons of her friends; she was never shy about accepting a ride, nor about helping with bathing or oiling when asked. She loved the beasts, and getting to spend time with them and her friends was always wonderful.

“Where are we going?” She asked, breathless with excitement that never seemed to fade away. Flying was magnificent fun, so freeing and liberating and wonderful! Her hands were clasped gently but firmly around R’dare’s upper arm as she hovered by his side, her watchful gaze switching between watching Kadiaisicalth and looking up at R’dare. Even if all they did was glide around above the Weyr, Madiquel would be delighted.

R'dare gave her a look that clearly said he wasn't going to tell her a thing as he wandered back over to Kadaisicalth to start packing up everything he had brought with him. Pants were tugged back on over top of the shorts he had been lounging in and his shirt was tossed on next. As he worked on his boots next, R'dare realized Madiquel wouldn't have her usual gear for longer flights and frowned. He didn't want to risk going back into the Weyr in case someone roped one or both of them into another chore.

"Here, you'll need this," he said after a moment's consideration and held out his riding jacket to Madiquel. "Don't want you catching a cold and blaming me," R'dare added with a wink and grin showing he was, as usual, teasing. He really didn't want her to get cold on the trip or even battered by any debris they stirred up if they did some low flying. He was only partially afraid of Jajojin's reaction if the man found out his baby girl had gone riding without any proper gear. It was also why R'dare always made sure his friend was safely attached to the straps and sat in front of him so he could hold the reigns with his arms around her. Not that he'd ever have to worry about Jajojin's fury if something happened to Madiquel; R'dare was pretty sure he'd just toss himself between from the guilt and anger at himself for hurting a friend.

Before Madiquel could even consider arguing who wore the jacket, R'dare gave up the secret of where he considered going, "I thought we'd go see if Rist is done being a responsible older brother and kidnap him and Edath and chase each other for a while."

Madiquel pouted when the only answer she got from R’dare was a look that told her she wouldn’t get anything out of the bluerider anytime soon. It didn’t dispel her excitement about going for a ride on the dragon, however, and she smiled thankfully when he handed her his jacket. It was much too big for her, but she wasn’t swimming so terribly in it that it made it impractical for a short ride. Tugging the sleeves back to her elbow for a moment, Madiquel reached up to quickly braid her long hair away from her face. Her hair was wavy enough that the braid stayed put, even without her having a leather strip on hand to tie it off with.

“I’m not the one that’ll whine like a baby if I get sick,” she teased back, poking R’dare in the ribs as she watched Kadisicalth excitedly; she couldn’t wait to be safely strapped up on the dragon. She loved to fly and she loved the freedom that flight brought with it. She was practically bouncing on her toes even as she folded the sleeves back and did it up, revealing her hands so she could scramble up Kadisicalth’s rich blue side, and settle herself carefully in her usual spot. She did some of the straps herself, but knew from experience that R’dare would only go over them to make sure she did it properly. It was easy, as a result, to just let him do the straps so he could content himself that she wasn’t going to fall off. Madiquel shook her head to herself, and resisted rolling her eyes as he did exactly that.

Madiquel bounced excitedly in her seat, every inch an excited child, as Clover twirled around their heads and then took off, leading towards the sky above. “Let’s go!” she cried, clicking her heels playfully against the sides of Kadisicalth’s neck. Her fingers clung to the straps in front of her, and she could feel R’dare’s arms warm and secure holding her in place. “To the skies!”
