The silence was deafening. A screeched nothing clawed at her ears, her breath stolen by icy fingers as they ripped sound from her lips, and drew it out in a single exhale. One. There may be nothing on the other side of this. There may be nothing to her future. Two. What if they didn't return on the other side? Her hands clenched the belts which held her in tighter, knuckles poking against her skin painfully even though she didn't dare release her hold. Did she dare to breath again? Three. This had to be taking too long! Fear made her teeth grit together and her stomach churn into twisted knots. Four...four, no, not four.

---

A whimper parted her lips before her eyes blinked open, body still from its inability to fully comprehend that she was awake. Even the bit of light which filtered through the glow basket seemed surreal. This was reality though, and before had been the dream. Einin coaxed herself back to a semblance of normalcy with that thought, that knowledge, before finally attempting to move. If she could just make some part of her body bend to the will of her mind then maybe she could convince herself. A moment passed, and then another, and at long last her big toe twitched up, then down, and a relieved sigh broke the silence.

Little by little she worked her muscles and ligaments: ankle making a circle, knee bending, spine twisting to move her body upward, arms and hands moving to push herself up into a sitting position. Though her mind still reeled it finally had slowed enough that she could nod to herself and admit that perhaps this change was more than just a little shock. It was one thing to move away from the only place you had known, and quite another to experience Weyr life for the first time, including the terrifying experience of between, in less than a month. Weariness had chased her to an early bed that particular evening as soon as lessons and chores would permit it, but even there, apparently she was incapable of escaping the culture shock.

A laugh bubbled up as she tousled her hair, shaking her head at her own ridiculousness. Come on Einin, you can handle this. Just get out of bed. Swallowing down the lump that clung to her throat, she slipped out of the covers which had begun to tangle around her legs, and back into her clothes instead. From there it was just a random choice between which halls to take, which turns and twists, getting lost happily in the newness and unknown for once. Everywhere she went brought something she hadn't seen before, and little by little that turned into a good thing as her heart lightened. By some miracle she eventually ended up in the dining hall, the smell of food luring her in with a siren's call and promises of a better night than had been her day.

So it's evening, probably after dinner. At least I don't have to face the full force of it. One step at a time, right?

As per his usual routine, R’nd was back in the kitchen area after having dinner with a few friends. He had, naturally, had dessert during that time but it was hardly ever enough for his sweet tooth and the bluerider meandered back to see what else he could get out of the lovely staff working that evening. Typically he could get another plate full of whatever he wanted and tonight was no exception as he held a plate piled with desserts of the sweet and even sticky variety. It was one very pleased bluerider that bid fond parting words before nearly skipping his way out of the kitchen and into the main dining area.

That was when he spotted a familiar splash of red hair that belonged to the girl he had Searched only a few weeks earlier. In a way, her hair was what attracted his eye before anything else but Ayyonth had looked beyond that and saw within the girl the potential to be a dragonrider. R’nd was pleased to hear that because while he may not have been able to see inside someone’s mind, he had seen the way she held back from the rest of that particular household and how she seemed to have the same desperate urge to be Searched that he had around that age.

Unfortunately he hadn’t been able to help her adjust as much as he would have liked though a few quick words were shared when he crossed paths with her. Now seemed like the perfect time to check up on her and see if she had made friends and what she thought about life at Telgar Weyr.

“Hi, Einin,” he called out with a smile and wave to catch her attention. Once he had it, the plate of food was pointed to before gesturing to a nearby table, “want to help me with these?” R’nd set the plate down on the indicated table and then darted off to get a pitcher of water and some mugs. He thought about getting some wine but he wasn’t sure if Einin liked wine or not so water it was. He returned a moment later and sat down to pour their drinks and settle in for a delicious feast.

Despite the day's end, life seemed to cling to the dining hall and kitchen. People filed past what remained of the last meal, each body an uncomfortable feeling of warmth as it jostled Einin out past the entrance. Once or twice, she caught the eye of a rider or unknown candidate, and the girl fought the urge to instinctively withdraw from the disapproval that her imagination conjured in their eyes. They knew she didn't belong here. Einin was sure of it. A breath caught awkwardly in her throat at the sound of her name however, and for a moment she was stuck with lungs inflated, brows drawing together in momentary concern for whatever she had done wrong this time, and a furious determination to not whimper in response. The first two were reactions that had happened before she could school her features into a more neutral expression, but by Faranth, the last was something she would not allow.

Except a soft and questioning croon did happen to make it beyond the loose curve of her lips. Einin racked her brain for the appropriate greeting, and more than that, a name to put with the man's face. Hazel eyes fell to the loops of crossing braids that would at least help her figure out the rider's rank, and a calmer understanding began to settle in with the gentle nature of his words; the ease in which he seemed to know her. Faces had always been easier for her to remember than names. It was mostly thanks to the turns spent with various shapes and angles, expressions and scars, paraded in front of her that she could pull the correct one from her memory now. The intent had once been for Einin to help the more forgetful of her siblings recall what they should have already known, but now it proved useful in a different manner, and she gave a small curtsy per habit with a gentle smile and inclination of her head.

"R-R'nd." she paused, stumbling over the oddity of an elided name for only a breath of a moment as it finally floated across consciousness and to the forefront of her mind. The searchrider should have been recognized immediately, and for that Einin chastised herself quietly in a moment of internal scolding. He had only spirited her away from an unfulfilling life to this wondrous place after all! Perhaps sarcasm was not the best tone to think in right now however, and as the girl clasped her hands in front of her demurely, she took a moment to consider his offer. The sweets and rolls did look delicious. It did not take long for their heady aroma to make her mouth water, or for the hunger to flourish and bloom in the way her eyes went from a simple regard to a raking desire over the plate; an expression that quickly was removed with a flutter of lashes and the upward tilt of her head to nod quietly at the man.

"Perhaps one..." even as she trailed off however, Einin knew that one could easily become two, and two could even more readily become a conversation. There was always talk about the searchriders, at least the nice ones, coming to check on the candidates they had found. The days had drawn on long and difficult though, and it had not been a far stretch for her to assume that once again she had been forgotten in her usual manner of blending into a background. Drawing attention to herself had never been Einin's style to begin with, and she supposed that R'nd finally recognizing one of his latest finds out of a crowd was a far better beginning to a conversation than one stemming from some sort of problem. "How have you been? And Ayyonth as well, of course." Funny how the dragon's name came to mind more easily than the man's. It was polite small talk however, the sort she would have said without a moment of hesitation or thought back at home. Those walks with other hold-girls or her sisters had been a means of keeping up appearances. At least this was out of genuine curiosity. It was a small difference, but a notable one where Einin was concerned.

R’nd smiled at Einin stumbling over his name but didn’t comment on it. It was something he was used to and it didn’t bother him. Ayyonth was a bit of a bastard for giving him an honorific without a vowel – especially when the dragon’s name had more than enough to go around – but considering he was working with ‘Orwind’, R’nd eventually stopped pouting and appreciated what he got. Besides, he loved the way his name rolled off the tongue of certain people in the heat of the moment which made up for any teasing.

His smile deepened when the young woman gave into the desire to enjoy some sweets and sat down to join him. He knew he had been remiss in checking in on those he had and even hadn’t Searched, especially in comparison to how he used to be Katila. He always tried to greet and befriend the Northerners that were brought to Katila, trying in his own way to make the transition easier for them, even though he had nothing to do with the old kidnapping ways they had resorted to. Now, despite what Holders likely believed, he had new duties as a dragonrider that kept him far busier than he wanted to be. Not to mention his continued attempts at being a good father to T’ryn and Benden and reconnecting with his sister and her family.

“I’ve been well, if a bit busy. The extra desserts help keep me going though!” R’nd laughed as he grabbed one of the snacks and took a bite. Once it was swallowed – his proper upbringing refused to let him talk with his mouth full – he continued, “Ayyonth is Ayyonth. He’s currently off pestering someone else so I have a few minutes of quiet to myself.”

Like I’d ever let you have that. Ayyonth snorted through their bond, reminding R’nd he was always around. How else would he keep his silly human out of trouble and why on Pern would he risk missing a chance of R’nd floundering in an unexpected situation? Send her my greetings. She seems to be a rather decent girl.

R’nd sighed dramatically but he didn’t mind the dragon’s company. The banter was just a part of their relationship and R’nd sometimes wondered what he would do without it. “Ayyonth says hello. We can stop by and visit you in the next few days if you’d like.” Obviously the girl was comfortable with the idea of dragons but R’nd didn’t want to presume Einin would want to hang out his large lump of blue dragon, especially if she wasn’t happy with her decision to come to the Weyr after all and held them responsible.

That slight possibility was enough to have the bluerider ask after her time at Telgar. “How have you been, Einin? Settled in okay?”

Syrup dribbled down the tender curve of her thumb, chased by her tongue and a brief peel of laughter that had more to do with the ridiculousness of this entire situation than anything that R'nd said. Each time she turned stormy eyes to the bluerider, Einin felt discomfort lingering at the edges of her mind, encroaching on the otherwise happy meeting. The difficult part was remembering that there was nothing actually wrong with him being here. Or, for her to desire the momentary distraction the conversation would offer. "I'd appreciate being able to see him again. Thank you." There was a politeness to the girl's tone, but it was the glimmer in grey-blue eyes that revealed how much the possibility of seeing the blue had sparked her interest. The dragons were beautiful creatures, and her main reservation had more to do with them not wanting to see her than of the other way around.

R'nd's laughter seemed contagious in those moments of conversation though, and with a mirrored smile, albeit smaller in its quiet murmur of agreement, Einin nodded her head. Keeping busy seemed to be the way of life here. Or, at least as busy as one could be. Whether that was with the business of wing drills and maintaining the day-to-day ins and outs of Weyr life, or with the business of pleasure and all the fun that came with the Weyr's freedoms, the candidate found things very... "Different. It's," she paused in the automatic response, and with a burdened sigh, the girl's eyes fell to a mostly untouched plate. The food was as good as any she had been given at her home, and yet it tasted of ash. If she could liken it any further to the absence of flavor that water held, Einin would.

Complaining about her situation would help no one, least of all her however, and with that understanding she tilted her head back upward to look at the bluerider. "It is different, but that is to be expected. One would not call anything worthwhile if it were easy." The words fell easily from her lips, and it was solely thanks to the comfort hidden within them that she managed a tone of minor confidence. It wouldn't be completely honest, and for that she felt terrible. R'nd seemed nice, and perhaps he truly was concerned about where her thoughts took their unmitigated turns into false pretenses. She had no real reason for worrying about fitting in. There hadn't been a single person here at the Weyr who had looked at her with the same pity or disinterest that those at the hold had. Neither had she experienced cruelty, veiled in sickeningly sweet smiles or otherwise, and for that, Einin was grateful.

"It's just that there's so much to get used to! Lessons, and rules, and everyone acts so differently here than back home. I don't necessarily miss home or my family, and I sorta feel bad about that too, but I miss the familiarity of it. At least there I knew how to act and what to do, and Faranth it is remarkably easy to get lost in this place."

The rush of words left her breathless, and with alarm widening a surprised regard for her spoken admonition, Einin curled her lips inward to press them tightly shut. It was a movement which ended with a sheepish pull of her shoulders up towards her ears, a quiet moment where her teeth nipped at the flesh of her lower lip, and fingers tangling into the ends of her hair. Rings were made out of the copper strands curling around her forefinger, and it was only after another slow twist that she dropped her hand back toward her lap. "I... I'm sure I'll get used to it though," she finally finished, though the lame excuse and attempt to shrug off her prior confession drew wrinkles along the line of her nose with winced shame. She shouldn't have said so much. She should have known better and kept her hand closer to her heart, but Einin had not grown up in Bitra where such games were common place, and her birth mother had only been able to impart so much advice to her child before Einin had left. She felt it a mistake, but it was one she would endeavor to not make again.

N’mor ran his hand through his hair in mild irritation as he propped a hip against the wall. He’d brought his little sister to Telgar to see their father, but the little imp had vanished on him, and Rhezalth found the entire situation far too hilarious to actually help his human find the girl. By that alone, N’mor knew she was okay and probably had found good company in the form of a lady or even their father – Rhezalth wasn’t giving any indications one way or the other – so while N’mor was mildly frustrated with his dragon, he wasn’t stressed about the situation.

Standing straight once more, N’mor shrugged his shoulders at his dragon and made his way towards the dining hall, wondering mildly if Amorandii had headed in that direction to find some desserts, since those were only outweighed by new dresses by the girl. Entering the Dining Hall, N’mor nodded greeting to an older bronzerider that was leaving the area, his grey-green eyes flickering around to take in those that were still in the hall. His expression brightened in delight when he spotted R’nd eating with a young lady. A sly little smirk pulled up one corner of N’mor’s lips, and he heard Rhezalth rumble in amusement in the back of his mind.

N’mor was far from a cruel young man, but after seeing his father mated to a monster like N’mall for so many turns, he had taken quite a while to warm up to R’nd. While the bluerider would likely be surprised by the fact, N’mor quite liked R’nd; he was an intelligent man who was good to his father and treated him right. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, N’mor rather enjoyed the power he had over R’nd. For some reason, the bluerider found his presence unnerving and N’mor found that hilarious – especially since that strange power over the bluerider had been given to him at a very young age.

Striding purposefully down the Hall and towards the pair, N’mor kept a blank stare on R’nd, waiting for the moment when the bluerider’s gaze would land upon him and register. It took a moment, and indeed, N’mor was almost to the table when the bluerider finally spotted him. A sly little smirk tilted up one side of the young bronzerider’s lips but he didn’t do anything more than nod a polite greeting to the young woman as he stepped out from behind her to stand across the table from the pair. Gaze turning back to R’nd, N’mor simply looked at him for a few moments, just to make the bluerider squirm. Only after he had succeeded did N’mor turn his attention to Einin.

“Excuse me, I don’t mean to interrupt.” A slight smile was given to the young woman, noting her candidate knots with expressive eyes. “You must be one of R’nd’s searchees. I’m sure he’s making you feel welcome here.” A sly look was tossed to the bluerider, N’mor quite aware of the reputation R’nd had had when he was younger for his ‘welcoming’ of those brought to Katila. He was fairly sure that R’nd hadn’t welcomed anyone in that way for quite some time, but the bluerider was far too much fun to tease.

N’mor sobered a little, and tilted his head at R’nd. “Have you seen Amorandii? I brought the girl here to see Dad, but she’s vanished and Rhezalth is enjoying the game of hide-and-seek far too much. Larrikith is probably the orchestrator.” He added dryly. Tossing a wink at Einin, N’mor plucked the fork from R’nd’s fingers and stole a piece of dessert, chewing placidly before putting the fork playfully back between R’nd’s fingers. Truly, the bluerider was far too much fun!

As Einin did her best to continue to seem proper and act as if nothing was wrong, R’nd regarded her with concern, trying his best to conceal it for the moment behind the glass of water he picked up and sipped at. Despite what she had said the day they met, R’nd wondered if the young lady truly was ready to make such a life changing move. She gave up everything she knew, every routine, every mannerism that was expected of her, and every habit that got her through the day to begin anew in an entirely different setting. He had been traditionally Searched before the Plague and he had been equally as excited to leave behind the life set out for him in exchange for something new. R’nd had never been fond of fishing or the seacraft and his Holder father always seemed a bit disappointed in him.

That seemed to end their similarities, however. R’nd was able to Stand for a clutch right away, though he didn’t Impress. That turned out to be an odd sort of blessing with the Plague sweeping through the population soon after that. His life had gone from the second son of a minor lord holder to a Candidate at Benden, then to a boy living in the forest of a strange new land within a year. The shock of how different the Weyr was from Hold never truly sank in for him, though he deeply understood the pain of missing his family.

“Einin, never be ashamed of what you say, do, or feel,” the glass of water was set down as R’nd tried his best to get across the point that he was there to be a friend and someone that could be trusted and relied upon. “Especially with me. You can come find me any time you want to talk or need a bit of time to decompress from the day.” He was about to offer the girl a trip home for a visit when she wanted it when movement caught his eye and R’nd glanced up to see someone approaching them.

It took a moment for him to make the connection of who it was with how concerned over Einin’s happiness he was, but once R’nd realized it was N’mor, he lost his train of thought and eyes widened. He wouldn’t call it a fear of the boy, but N’mor made him uncomfortable and left him convinced the young bronzerider’s stare was looking right into his soul. How N’mor was able to pull off such an intense gaze was beyond R’nd’s comprehension but he knew he didn’t like it though he had nothing against the boy. Although, the subtle implications behind his words about making Candidates feel welcomed was starting to tip the scale against him.

R’nd had a moment of panic when he heard N’mor had lost his sister but once the two dragons were mentioned, he relaxed once more, knowing neither would allow Amorandii to go missing or end up hurt. “You’re probably right about Larrikith. It probably also explains how pleased Ayyonth seems to be with himself,” the large blue dragon had taken a liking to some of the younger children back in Katila and liked when any of them came back to visit him for a bit.

R’nd frowned when his fork vanished and N’mor helped himself to the desserts. He should have grabbed a second plate’s worth of food with all the sharing that was suddenly happening. A somewhat sassy comment about helping himself was on his lips when R’nd remembered who was standing by him and the frown deepened further until manners finally made him introduce everyone.

“Einin, this is N’mor of bronze Rhezalth; B’jin’s son. He lives at Ista but likes to make unexpected visits. N’mor, this is Einin, and your assumption was correct; I recently Searched her.”

By the time she would realize that someone was standing behind her, it would have already been too late. Einin jolted in her seat, startled by the sudden voice in her ear, and head snapping toward the young bronzerider with eyes widened in surprise. Whatever she was about to say to R'nd fell mute on her lips as her brain halted in its tracks, mouth startled open and quivering for a moment longer as she tried to form words. Any words. Instead an unintelligible squeak came out much to her own chagrin, and heat flushed the skin across her cheeks and the bridge of her nose. Even as she ducked her head down for a shy second, eyes catching the movement of the new rider's playfulness as he stole a bite of food off of the bluerider's plate, she found herself at a loss for what to say.

What did one say in this situation? They obviously knew each other. It was as plain as her own flustered discomfort, but while some may have found the sudden change in conversation annoying - for they certainly seemed to talk over her head without a care - Einin took the opportunity to gather her own thoughts and reconsider how to proceed. Hopefully, when she opened her mouth again it wouldn't be to utter something as embarrassing, or mawkish, as a squeak. That would have been the reaction her family would expect of her; quiet, subservient, willing to sit quietly and with the patience of one who knew her place. Underneath that louder melody of chanted lessons and scolding reminders however, was a softer undercurrent which perked up with insistent curiosity; growing ever stronger with the passing seconds that the two riders took to talk.

There were important pieces here for her to find, if only an effort were put into grabbing them down from the river of information. Was R'nd drawing into a more tense profile now that a ranking rider was around them? Was that even a concern with a bronzerider so young? The Weyr was different than the world Einin had come from -- one where rank had had been born into, or bought with the a daughter marrying the right son. Even craftsmen held a purposeful spot in society based upon skill and age, but while all of these things made sense, they twisted into confusion in the face of a color hierarchy where a bluerider more than twice a bronzerider's age still had to be careful as not to overstep boundaries. Where did that leave her then? It wasn't until a brief introduction left R'nd's lips that she lifted a clouded gaze toward the direction in which their mutual attention had turned.

"Well met then N'mor. I do hope you find your girl before poor R'nd loses all of his desert." A clever regard flicked toward the sticky tarts as she licked the remainder of one from her fingers, all too happy to indicate that the bronzerider was not the only culprit in that act. "Tell me, are they really that much better here than in Ista, or is it that they're R'nd's that makes them so worth filching?" It was an innocent question surely, but one that no doubt infringed on her normal comfort levels. Perhaps with some other girl's voice it would have been easy to mistake her tone for flirtation, and she realized too late that N'mor still could should he make that mistake, but the playfulness that bubbled up into her words went deeper than that. In a way, she chose to poke fun at his habits in a subtle shift to R'nd's side; giving the man who had searched her a fair bit of support rather than turn against him in a show of disloyalty.

“Can I choose ‘all of the above’?” N’mor asked, arching an eyebrow and flashing a warm smile on Einin. While N’mor wasn’t inherently flirty, he wasn’t opposed to sharing warm words with pretty girls, and indeed had found himself the centre of much unwanted attention since not only Impressing to Rhezalth, but also since moving North, where rank accounted for so much more than N’mor had thought possible, even having grown up in the Weyr. It was probably one of the lessons his father had brushed over rather lightly, and most likely because of B’jin’s own green dragon and his bittersweet memories of being a Harper.

“Oh, I’m sure I’ll find her.” N’mor shrugged, smiling again before tossing another wink to Einin; “She won’t do anything to get her newest dress dirty, which limits her – ” N’mor fell silent as Rhezalth interrupted him, the young bronzerider’s eyebrows furrowing before his expression relaxed and he smiled cheerfully. “Or Dad could find her and take her off my hands. Well, hand.” N’mor had learned quickly that there was no point in being flighty about the fact that he’d lost an arm, and after three years, he’d come to both accept the missing limb, and enjoy playing games with people who went out of their way to ignore it, as if by acknowledging the lost limb they’d somehow offend him.

Glancing at R’nd for a moment, N’mor turned back to Einin with a tilt of his head. “There aren’t any gold eggs on the Sands.” His questioning look flickered back to R’nd for a moment, lips pursing in displeasure before glancing back at Einin. “You’re not Standing for a green, are you?” N’mor’s expression pinched slightly in distaste at the idea, eyebrows furrowing as he considered the young woman before him; as far as he was aware, there were no Searches for female chromatic candidates, and he didn’t think Telgar would put itself in the firing line by doing something so unorthodox. R’nd could be out there, but he didn’t think the bluerider would do that to a girl, either. He wouldn’t have put it past his father, who was training the only female bluerider to be a Weyrlingmaster, but Larrikith only Searched for gold and bronze.

“My mother rode blue,” N’mor’s expression flattened, “girl’s don’t belong on fighter dragons.” His opinion on the matter went without further explanation, and he reached out to steal another slice of dessert, still frowning to himself as he chewed on it. N’mor’s opinion that women didn’t belong on anything but gold was a strong one, though he had yet to give any an explanation as to why he felt that way, even T’ryn. It went hand in hand with his almost phobic dislike of being around blue dragons; another thing that came with no reasoning from the young man to those that asked or observed.

R’nd wasn’t quite sure what to think about N’mor flirting with Einin. He had no designs on the girl himself due to matters of the heart concerning B’jin that he didn’t like to overthink but revolved around the simple fact that he loved the greenrider. It was simply seeing N’mor flirt that was odd. The boy had always had that type of effect on him and while he wouldn’t say he didn’t trust the young bronzerider, he also didn’t peg him as being friendly on the verge of flirting. Then again, he was a teenaged boy and those desires crept up on everyone, including soul-staring boys—and his son. R’nd had a moment of realization that his son was old enough to take such an interest in others and while R’nd didn’t feel he needed to have any sort of talks with T’ryn since he was both weyrbred and had a good head on his shoulders, he did feel he was suddenly ridiculous old and the plate of desserts started to look like comfort food.

He almost missed N’mor declare that Amorandii was found by B’jin thanks to his moping but tuned back in to the conversation in time and smiled with relief. He also suspected he’d be seeing the pair soon enough as well since Amorandii hated stopping by and not getting to see him—likely because he spoiled her in compliments and treats. At N’mor’s mentioning of his lack of an arm, R’nd glanced at Einin, having completely forgotten that she wouldn’t be used to the missing limb like he was but she currently didn’t seem phased which only added to his belief that she was a good person. That was one thing he’d give credit to N’mor for; the boy was strong to be able to come back from such an injury, continue living the life he wanted, and even joke about it. He was also proud of T’ryn for being such a loyal friend and helping N’mor through it all and staying friends.

But then N’mor had to ruin that moment of admiration by judging why he Searched the girl when there wasn’t a gold egg in the current clutch and then continue to insult female chromatic riders. “I’m sure Indivara would love to have a conversation with you in regards to that matter, N’mor,” R’nd tossed out once the bronzerider had finished speaking and before Einin could do anything. Indivara was practically a little sister to him and he was proud to call her a fellow bluerider. She proved daily she deserved her rank, not only because Venseth had chosen her and the dragon was never wrong, but because of how hard she worked on her dream of being a Weyrlingmaster.

Speaking of dragons never being wrong, “just because there isn’t a gold egg doesn’t mean Ayyonth isn’t going to tell me to ignore her for now and come back next time. He thought she was worthy of a dragon and I happen to agree. I think Einin would be a great goldrider but if she hopes for green or even blue, I’ll support her in that as well.” R’nd smiled at Einin, sincerity overflowing from him. He knew he was one of the rare men that didn’t look down upon women and encouraged them to follow their dreams. Of course he did still hope for her to Impress to gold as it’d be an easier life for her than that of a greenrider but he’d still support her no matter what and it wasn’t just because he and Ayyonth were responsible for bringing a sweet girl into the Weyr life. R’nd just genuinely liked people and got good vibes from Einin.

It was rather unfortunate that N'mor chose that particular moment to exclaim his traditionalist views, and with her lips parted across the edge of a new pastry, Einin's eyes widened for a shared second of surprise. That train of thought was not a new one to her, there had been plenty of men and women who had shared the bronzerider's views back home, and she had been raised on plenty of them herself. There was one problem with N'mor's assumptions however, that the candidate seated near him was apt to be quiet and simply nod her head in avid agreement.

Being raised on those beliefs did not mean she supported them wholeheartedly however, and things were never as cut and dry as more traditional minds wanted to believe. At least, not in her experience. A hand slid up toward R'nd's direction while the other set down her sweet, a stilled motion and quiet regard following, which shifted toward the bluerider in a silent gesture to let her defend herself. The look was considerably less patient or warm as it slid to the younger boy, and for once she looked past the rank of his knots to the still youthful face which she felt confident held fewer turns than she had seen herself.

"R'nd, but you see, I agree. Certain traditions are important to uphold."

When she spoke again, it was with a cool and collected tone, the words steadily gaining a coy lilt as if she thought it rather ridiculous that he could possibly be hinting at the way she twisted his opinions. "For example, I know that a son born to a Lord can impress a green or blue while a boy everyone thought would be left standing can walk off with a bronze, and that a girl who is assumed to be a pest because she was born into servitude and drudgery can rise to become a Weyrwoman. What we are supposed to put faith in, and the tradition I choose to uphold, is one I'm certain you're quite familiar with Bronzerider. That the dragon chooses their rider, and they are always right."

"People see things blindly, tinted by what we assume of others based off of their appearance, their status, and their preferences. A dragon knows none of this, and yet we must believe that this is a better way of perceiving the world, because we insist that they are right, and it is poor form to question a dragon's choice in their rider. If we did..." And here she finally lifted the corner of her lips in a motion of one who knew they had just called checkmate, "then that would allow even a bronze to be questioned for his choice, let alone a green or blue. Which I am sure is not what you intended by doubting such an esteemed tradition."

She barely waited a breath of a minute before she continued with that same cheshire's grin, "were you in fact questioning a green or blue's choice in what they believe to be their best match?"

N’mor tilted his head, raising one eyebrow at R’nd as he did so, an amused smirk tugging up one corner of his lips. “Indivara is hardly an example of femininity.” He replied, tone mild and expression bored. The young woman was not exactly a good argument, in his opinion; she was brash, loud, and incredibly obnoxious – let it never be forgotten that she had once proclaimed (loudly) that she would Impress to a bronze dragon. Indivara was everything that was wrong with female dragonriders, though it was quite clear R’nd had his head in the clouds about that. Deciding the bluerider (like all blueriders) was a lost cause, N’mor shifted his attention to Einin and decided to ignore his father’s lover.

N’mor listened to Einin with the raised eyebrow and the half smirk of someone who was in no way flustered by the haughty sentences leaving the other’s lips. He didn’t interrupt, nor did he get upset with the things she was attempting to imply, despite the insult to both himself and Rhezalth, who was listening avidly through his rider; the bronze was sharing eyes so he could watch Einin in the same bemused way as his lifemate. Only when Einin appeared to be patting herself on the back with her victory did N’mor decide to speak.

“The problem, inherent, with your argument, is that you are forgetting that dragons, much like humans, are extremely varied in their intelligence. Of course, the dragon is always right –“ he would allow that, because it was something he did truly believe. “However, you are failing to account for the choices of, to be frank, stupid dragons. You are new to the Weyr life, but take my word – there are no shortage of stupid dragons, of all colours, and they are known to make stupid decisions.” N’mor smirked wryly; he’d practically been raised by Parella and her green Grith, and he loved both dearly. That, however, didn’t mean he felt Parella made a good dragonrider any more than he would ever call Grith intelligent. There were countless others; “I’d be happy to give an account of several, if you would like. I’ll even include only those still alive, so you can make a quest of proving me wrong.”

Raising an eyebrow, content that he had made his point; what more need he say? Perhaps a little defence, just to make sure she didn’t question his own Impression! N’mor lifted his stump slightly. “Before you continue down the line that my dragon could have made a mistake choosing me, and thereby be a stupid creature, I would like to point out that a stupid dragon would not have survived the trauma I endured just hours after Rhezalth Hatched. A stupid dragon would have gone between, simply from a lack of understanding; many did.” Sorrow actively crossed N’mor’s face as the memory of the landslide came back; he’d been too heavily medicated to bear the brunt of the event, such as cleaning up or coping with insane dragonriders, but he’d known many of the young men that had Impressed the same clutch as him, only to be lost hours later in the disaster. To say nothing of the adult riders that had been pillars in his youth taken too soon and in a most horrifying way.

R’nd found himself in a rather awkward position. N’mor was a bronzerider, his lover’s son, and younger than him. So many labels that contradicted each other and the bluerider wasn’t sure which one he should prioritize. He suspected that since N’mor was no longer a weyrling that he now outranked him as a bronzerider but what R’nd wouldn’t give to be able to drag the boy by the ear to his father so he could learn some proper manners. However, Einin had made it clear she didn’t need him defending her and that she could handle the situation on her own so he decided staying quiet a little longer was the best course of action, especially since he could agree with points from both sides of the argument.

It was hard to deny the fact that dragons were very much like humans when it came to differing levels of intelligence after spending so much time around them. Green Grith was a definite prime example with her flightiness. Even brown Ghaeth and green Rilaleeyth could be thrown into the argument, though R’nd was more inclined to see them as too sweet and innocent for their own good. That didn’t mean their choices were questionable—with perhaps the exception of Rilaleeyth bonding to J’ver. How that lovely green picked the conniving snake that was her rider was still a mystery but she had seen something in the man that was right to her, just like Larrikith had view B’jin from the Stands as he observed as a Harper. It was hard to say why dragons chose who they did, only that it was meant to be. It was why R’nd didn’t question females on chromatics, although he did get a bit nervous that they might get hurt but that was the protector in him wanting to look out for everyone he cared for.

When N’mor brought up the landslide, R’nd winced slightly at his own memories of the night. They lost a lot of people and dragons in that catastrophe and R’nd had feared he had lost B’jin as well when he couldn’t find the man right away. He glanced down at the pastries and set the fork down beside the plate, currently not interested in the sweets.

He forced his attention back to the present and glanced between the two teens, waiting to see what would happen next. He suspected further bickering before N’mor grew bored and wandered off but with his odd upbringing of Hold, wilderness, and Weyr, R’nd was partially waiting for the two to start kissing as they viewed their spat as some form of twisted flirting.
