As they reappeared from between above Telgar Weyr, Veeth gave a greeting to the watch dragon and began the descent to their weyr. V’ler yawned, still surprised that the chill of between didn’t seem to wake him up like a slap to the face. Then again, traveling between was still something he hated doing, feared it really, so he suspected it was something along the lines of the rush of adrenaline fading with the relief of making it through left him even more drained than what he started with. He often wondered if one day he’d get over the justified cautiousness of their main way of travel but then he wondered if it’d be a dishonour to the memory of Iruvia and green Unowth who died in their class on learning how to travel between. In the end, he always decided to travel sparingly and to be of a sound mind when he did so, just in case.

That evening saw him returning from Fort Weyr where he spent the latter half of the day observing his second favourite pair of muses in the form of R’nya and Rhaedalyn. B’jin and R’nd would always hold a special spot in his Harper’s heart for inspiring sappy love songs but the Fort leaders were still in a fun spot of denial and dancing around each other that brought out other inspirations in the bluerider. Of course that wasn’t the only reason he went to Fort.

While he once told Indivara he had no desire in being a father which matched her lack of desire to be a mother, V’ler still occasionally popped in to see Varlea, his daughter Rhaedalyn was kindly raising. He lacked every fatherly bone imaginable, but he still showed up to see how she was doing. Maybe it was some form of guilt or even just simple curiosity on how a child he helped produce was fairing in the world. V’ler really didn’t know the reason but he still went and interacted with the girl and Rhaedalyn’s daughter, Alyren, for an hour or so. Usually he ended up drinking juice with Rhaedalyn as the girls played a few feet away. He was happy with that level of interaction and while he wasn’t as versed in writing children’s songs or songs about kids through the eyes of parents, he took some notes when something stood out to him.

Quill and Vex appeared at the entrance to the weyr to greet him, having stayed home this trip. Vex didn’t like most people but didn’t seem too fond of Rhaedalyn’s gold firelizard, Whisper. Since Quill and Vex luckily did get along well, they were usually seen side by side and Quill had stayed with his brother as well. V’ler greeted them both with little pats to their heads and dismounted from Veeth who was crooning happily at his ‘mini-mes’ that he adored. He didn’t see Venseth while he removed the riding gear from Veeth but that wasn’t really that odd. The blue dragon sometimes went off to socialize or was on an errand while Indivara had one of her favoured night baths; unless the pair was actually out and about somewhere.

It didn’t bother him either way if Indivara was home or not. They had a weird relationship but it worked for them. They somehow managed to share the same space, bed included, and never asked the other for anything. After the one and only time Indivara had walked in on him during a flight that hadn’t gone too well, V’ler had made sure not to be near his own bed when Veeth chased one of his many favoured greens. Otherwise, they got along surprisingly well, looking out for the other in their own way yet not fretting over them and becoming overbearing either.

V’ler wasn’t much of a drinker, preferring to have a glass at special occasions, but every so often a glass of wine while he was writing at the end of a long day seemed appropriate for his mind frame. After stripping out of the days clothes and tossing on a pair of comfy pants he wore for bed, V’ler poured himself a glass and went over to his desk to look over the days’ notes before possibly attempting to work out the chorus to a song he’d been struggling on for a bit. Vex and Quill were quick to follow, taking up their usual places with Vex on his shoulder and Quill sprawled along the top of the desk.

One of the things Indivara loved about V’ler’s weyr – and she had rather the long laundry list of reasons she had chosen to set up camp in his bed – was the fact that he had a personal bathroom attached. Once upon a time, Indivara hadn’t given two wits about what anyone thought of her or her bathing habits, of which she was well known, but once upon a time she hadn’t been covered in scars that she was very self-conscious about. Indivara was improving, as she spent sessions with Parella, who also bore Hatching-day scarring, and as she grew into her own. But she was still far too aware of them to be naked in a public bathing area; she was really only getting to the point where she was comfortable in her own skin around her long time friends.

So, while Venseth was not home – he was off doing whatever it was young blue dragons do when they aren’t home and bothering their rider – Indivara was tucked away in the small bathroom – she could have enjoyed a larger bathing room, but she wasn’t about to argue too much – which was filled with steam. M’ris wasn’t the only dragonrider who had heard about bubble baths, and Indivara had been girlishly delighted by the novelty of such a thing, and quickly taken a liking to filling the bath with sweet smelling bubbles that she would deny playing with during her bath. They really livened up bath time! Indivara was blowing them out of her hand and down the length of the tub when she heard Veeth land on the edge of the weyr and V’ler wander in.

Queenie peered out from the cave of bubbles she was currently hiding within to chirp a question, and Indivara giggled softly before shooing the little gold away to greet V’ler, which the tiny queen did with gusto, sending bubbles flying in every direction as she flung herself out of her cave. Indivara dissolved into peals of laughter while Saph looked highly disgruntled from where he was sitting on the far side of the small room. He huffed to himself and settled down, tail wrapped tightly around himself as he stared at Indivara like he expected the girl to scold her gold. Indivara regally ignored him.

Covered in bubbles, and dripping them, Queenie came flying out of the bathroom like a little tornado of gold to barrel into the back of V’ler’s head, wrapping her wet tail around his neck and rubbing her face against his cheek as she crooned a greeting. She didn’t stay there very long, never one to overly push her limits; releasing him she fluttered off to land on Indivara’s shoulder, her tail making a gold necklace around the young woman’s neck as she strode into the room.

“Hey,” Indivara peered over V’ler’s shoulder, her small body wrapped tightly in a fluffy towel – another gem she’d picked up from the local gather, and so much nicer than what she’d been using for so many years at Katila – though her long, wet hair was falling down her back in a tangled mess. “What did you get today?” Indivara grinned as she wiped her wet fingers against the back of V’ler’s neck, enjoying his reaction before moving away towards the bed and the chest of her (stolen V’ler) clothing that was kept near it.

For all her modestly when it came to the general public, Indivara had given up such pretences with V’ler; he had yet to comment on her scars, and while her first few cloth changing sessions around him had been done with dangerous and defiant airs, she’d since gotten to the point where she didn’t even notice if he bothered to look at her. Not that there was a lot to look at; while dragonriding had fine toned Indivara’s muscles, she was still tiny with no hips and no bust, all narrow lines and long limbs. Pulling on one of V’ler’s shirts, Indivara towel dried her hair as she perched on the edge of the bed, watching her companion lazily.

V’ler was extremely happy he hadn’t been trying to take a sip of wine when he was hit by a golden projectile to the back of the head. Queenie was treated to an ‘oof’ from the bluerider and a hiss of shock and displeasure from Vex. Recovering from the shock, V’ler gave her a little pat on the head in greeting before she took off again. He wasn’t surprised to hear Indivara a moment later, suspecting she would make an appearance soon as her golden companion often led the way after not seeing him for any length of time.

“Hey,” he replied without looking up at Indivara. He also didn’t cover up what he was working on which said a lot about their relationship. V’ler was horribly private in matters concerning himself and his writing but he also knew Indivara wasn’t the type to steal any of it or even talk about it in any great detail to anyone in particular. If anything, she’d simply say he had his nose buried in his papers and was covered in ink again as he worked far too late into the night.

He shivered at the wet fingers to his neck and couldn’t resist reaching up to wipe away the cool trail they left behind. “Not much, really,” it wasn’t uncommon to not be hit with an idea because he was surrounded by his muses but V’ler was secretly a bit frustrated over it all the same. It was happening for too much lately and he felt like he was in a bit of a creative block, as was evident by the way the chorus wasn’t working itself out. He likely just needed to take a small break and relax for a bit but that felt like a form of giving up and V’ler wasn’t sure he liked that idea.

“Rhaedalyn wants you to visit soon though,” it was a bit of a topic-changing tactic but he didn’t care. He didn’t have much to report on his writing or even on the adventures of the day. Some trips he came back with a fun story about R’nya or some of Indivara’s classmates but he was pretty tapped out today. A sip of wine was taken and V’ler frowned at it before setting it back down, deciding he wasn’t actually in the mood for it, and turned to Indivara, now sitting comfortably on the bed in one of his shirts. He had long ago stopped caring about her raiding his wardrobe, though he had never said anything to stop her from doing it either. It made her happy and it didn’t hurt him any so there wasn’t a point to bicker about it. It also added to the illusion that they were mated which again made Indivara happy and didn’t bother him one way or the other.

“Of course she does,” Indivara sighed, brushing her fingers back through her long hair in an attempt to comb out the tangles. It was a hit-and-miss job, but after a few minutes Indivara got it so that she could begin braiding from the crown of her head and down the length without falling into too much trouble for her efforts. Once her braid was completed, she tied it with a strip of leather and threw the rope of hair back over her shoulder. It would undoubtedly make a wet patch on her back, but the young woman was not particularly worried; it was a warm spring night.

“Is that what you were up to today?” Removing Queenie gently when she tried to land on Indivara’s shoulder, the girl settled the firelizard in her arms and caressed her with long slow strokes, listening with half an ear as Queenie purred her pleasure. “There was a maiden flight today and we noticed Veeth wasn’t here to make her feel special.” While she was clearly teasing, there was a dryness to Inidvara’s tone; Venseth was still lacking any interest at all in any of the greens, and Indivara had even encouraged him to give chase that day, albeit without much gusto, for as much as she wanted the young blue to give chase, she was still shy about the idea of being affected by his lust. It was one thing to flight moth, it was quite another to lose herself, and Indivara was afraid of the lack of control.

Wandering over to the desk, Indivara stopped petting Queenie so she could give Quill a gentle pat, gently scratching him under the jaw and across the eye ridges. “I guess I’ll head over sometime. I’ve got classes with B’jin for the next three days, though.” While the greenrider was currently without a proper class to teach, Indivara had managed to badger him into giving her lessons, since she was barely out of her own Weyrlinghood and she wanted to make Assistant before too much longer, if she could. Of course, that required being picked by one of the Weyrlingmasters to assist, and she didn’t have a lot of faith in most of them choosing her; she was young, she was a she, and she rode a blue who still hadn’t given chase (it was amazing how many people were aware of that fact, too!).

You pay far too much attention to gossip; you’re showing your inner girl.

Indivara was startled into a laugh at her dragon’s input; “Its my inner green dear, not girl. Greenriders are notorious for gossip, and I learned from some of the best. Where are you?”

I am here, the blue announced loudly, landing lightly on the edge of the weyr and slipping inside with a croon of greeting and a nose rub to Veeth. And fine, you are showing your inner green. Does that suit you better? He didn’t bother to curb his voice, making sure V’ler heard, though keeping his tone low enough to not include those outside of the two humans; he had no intention of feeding the gossips further, whatever his opinion on the matter.

When you stop worrying about what the gossips are saying, you will be much happier. Tell her. The last was demanded of V’ler, and Indivara sighed at the routine; Venseth was usually right, but he seemed to enjoy proving he was right by making or having V’ler agree with him, as if whatever he said held more weight for being backed up by the Harper.

I knew we would miss something exciting here today. A few ladies looked extra radiant today, Veeth whined, only slightly, at missing out on chasing in a maiden flight. He liked to make all of the ladies on the Weyr feel special. He’d have to make it up to her soon.

V’ler, for his part, rolled his eyes at his dragon and almost didn’t reply, not wanting to feed Veeth’s need for attention at times but did so anyway. “You could have stayed behind, you know. But then you’d miss out on spending time with Aradissicath.” That put an end to Veeth’s sulking as he acknowledged that the gold was indeed lovely and fun to spend time with. Veeth knew some dragons didn’t like her and found her a bit arrogant or demanding, but he found her fun, pleasant, and interesting as they exchanged stories.

“And kind of. Since I was there, I figured I should stop by,” V’ler shrugged, not finding it a big deal that he sometimes willingly made an appearance in his daughter’s life. R’nya was by far more of a father to Varlea than he was and it didn’t bother him how the girl actually viewed him. He was likely some sort of uncle or family friend in her eyes and that was fine by him. Easier on him as well. He by no means had a parenting bone in his body.

V’ler was a bit lost when Venseth joined the conversation and the pair started discussing gossip and inner whatevers thanks to not being privy to Indivara’s inner thoughts like the darker blue dragon but he did smirk at Indivara’s comeback and couldn’t help adding his own two cents. “I think your inner green is rubbing off on Venseth,” while V’ler didn’t see an issue with it, someone would have to be colour blind to not notice the green hues mixed into Venseth’s blue hide. He knew Indivara was teased about it, most of the time by her friends doing it good-naturedly but there were those that did it in an attempt to hurt her.

As if suddenly on the same page, Venseth was encouraging his rider to stop listening to gossip and wanted back up in the matter. V’ler was definitely the right person for the subject as he never cared what people thought about him or his actions. He had received quite a few beatings in the past for continuing to sing the praises of the dragonriders when he was still just a Journeyman Harper making his rounds that believed in the good of dragons but didn’t know they were still alive in the South. Holders didn’t want to hear it but still he sang it. He also suspected people from Hold, Hall, and Weyr found him odd whether it be for his lack of interest in sex outside of flights, his sharp tongue, or the way he dressed, but that was just who he was and it didn’t matter what others thought of him.

“He’s right, Vara. When you pay attention to the whispers and gossip, you’ll lose your mind and question everything you do. It’s easier to just be you and not give a damn.”

“You make me look bad,” Indivara grumbled half-heartedly, not putting any real venom into the words; she didn’t care one whit how much Rhaedalyn griped about her not spending time with Varlea, but it was as good a topic as any to bicker about with V’ler! While she wasn’t a constant input in the child’s life, Indivara knew she visited the little mite more often than some dragonriders visited their offspring. The fact that the child called her by name when she saw her was good enough point of fact for Indi. She was just glad she wasn’t called mama. That would have been a bit hard to swallow.

“I don’t give a damn what they say about me!” Indivara bit back, irritated with both dragon and human companions. Queenie fluttered away as Indivara’s agitation interrupted the cuddle session and she squeaked unhappily, sulking where she landed on Venseth’s head. Indivara ignored her, her hands on her hips and glaring at V’ler like everything was all his fault. “But when they –“ and she threw one arm out, indicating the Weyr at large “start making snarky comments about my dragon, I draw the damned line!”

I don’t know why it bothers you. It certainly doesn’t bother me. Venseth lifted his head from where he was curled up in his spot of the weyr, tilting his head to look in the direction he knew Indivara was located, even if he couldn’t actually see her through the rocks and leather barriers separating them. I am not broken for choosing you, the green of my hide is quite attractive fi I do say so myself and does not make me any less of a blue, and I will chase when I am well and ready and not a moment before, thank you very much.

Indivara flailed for a moment, looking very unsure of what to do or where to attack, before she quite unexpectedly burst into tears and collapsed on the edge of the bed, burying her head in her arms, fingers clinging to her hair. Venseth gave a very undignified shriek of alarm, scrabbling from where he’d been comfortably sprawled, to press up against Veeth, seeking comfort in his companion when he couldn’t physically reach his human. Vesnseth was confused, not by Indivara’s typical and characteristic emotional meltdown – for he was used to her getting outrageously angry, or bright and happy – but she rarely cried, and that disturbed him.

While they didn’t fight as much as they did upon first meeting each other, V’ler was still accustomed to Indivara’s outbursts and her desire to bicker just because they could. This, however, seemed different. She was genuinely upset that people were talking about Venseth and V’ler hesitated a moment to consider how to proceed. He understood the desire to defend one’s dragon given the bond that was shared but he also saw Venseth’s point of view. If Veeth said it didn’t bother him – and luckily he was a damned sweet dragon and no one seemed able to be mad at him or else V’ler would never hear the end of that lamenting – then it wouldn’t bother V’ler either. It was that simple.

But Indivara was anything but simple. None of his friends seemed to be the more he thought about it. No one could do things the easy way and had to dance around feelings and desires; but that just made things more interesting to watch unfold as an outside.

He was about to agree with Venseth on his hide being rather fetching with the green mixed in since any time he teased about the colouring it was done playfully when Indivara burst into tears. This was not something he was accustomed to and V’ler was close to echoing the blue dragons’ – as it chain reacted and caused Veeth to squeak as well – distress but he stayed his tongue. Veeth, for his part, nestled his head against Venseth’s with even Vex coming over to see how the large dragon was doing while Quill stayed on the desk observing Indivara.

V’ler realized he was gawking with his mouth hanging slightly open as he wondered what he was supposed to. He really wasn’t one to comfort someone, knowing full well that someone like R’nd would have already swooped in and had the situation under control. V’ler, however, managed to close his mouth and cautiously approach the crying woman before slowly sitting down beside her. Once he was there, instinct took over and he put his arms around Indivara to draw her in for a hug. He wasn’t a hugger and hated when those that were tried to hug him constantly but it seemed appropriate right then.

“There’s more than just comments about Venseth,” it wasn’t a question but a statement. He had been a Harper for too long to not notice such connections that led to their current moment in time. His Harper training had also opened him up a bit more to listening in on gossip so he had heard some of what was said about the bratty girl that rode a blue dragon. The fact that he did have some green in his hide had been a goldmine for some of the losers roaming around commenting on where a girl like Indivara should be if she had to be a dragonrider but there had been other whisperings. It was hard to avoid the fact that Veeth chased everything and everyone knew it and had opinions on it. The fact that his so-called mate’s dragon had yet to chase at all seemed to amuse people. If anything, he was talked about more than Indivara was in that area since Veeth’s habits and the fact he didn’t do anything to try and stop them made it seem like Indivara wasn’t enough for him.

But those comments weren’t usually the type to bother the girl he still held so there had to be more, though V’ler wasn’t that great of a Harper where he could read minds.

Indivara slumped into V’ler’s embrace, shifting her hands from hiding her head to wrap around the bluerider’s shoulders so she could cling to him, burying her face against the crook of his neck. For a while, it appeared she either didn’t hear or was ignoring V’ler’s statement, as she did little more than cry where she was sitting. After a while, the sobbing broke off to indelicate hiccups and sniffling, with Indivara shifting uncomfortably before withdrawing her arms, looking down at the floor with puffy eyes. While she sat up a little straighter, she didn’t wriggle away from her companion.

“I don’t care what they say about me,” and she didn’t. Indivara had heard her share of gossip about herself, and had always been someone that was talked about in one circle or another. She’d scoffed and laughed at much of the things spoken about, from her attitude as a child to her desire to Impress a bronze and all the laughter that caused, and still she’d held her head high. She’d heard all the whisperings that had gone about after she’d been mauled by bronze Hoth during the Hatching back in 231, and while it had solidified her self-consciousness about her scarring, Indivara had taken their mockery and comments with her head held high once more; she wouldn’t let anyone see how much they affected her.

Wiping at her cheek with the palm of one hand, Indivara pulled her legs up onto the bed and under herself, shifting a little closer to lean against V’ler without realising she did so. Taking a deep breath, Indivara sighed it out in a shuddering exhale. “Ry thinks Ven isn’t chasing because of me.” The sentence ended in a hiccup, and Indivara wiped at her face again. The young woman had been sitting on the conversation she’d had with R’vi for many months, chewing on it and unintentionally altering it until she wound up with one constant thought: she was fucking up her dragon, and her friend said so.

The longer the crying and hugging went on, the more it solidified his belief that he was not good at comforting people. Was this really all he had to? Simply hold Indivara and keep his mouth shut? He’d never been good at the keeping quiet thing but so far it seemed to be the right tactic so V’ler continued trying his hand at it until Indivara seemed able to collect herself somewhat. Another thing he decided was the phrase ‘ugly cry’ was pretty accurate. The sobbing, hiccupping, and puffy eyes really wasn’t attractive and it wasn’t something he wanted to deal with on a regular basis but wisely continued staying silent lest she gave him a good reason to do his own version of it.

When it seemed like Indivara was ready to talk, V’ler listened and then contemplated the issue. He didn’t doubt that the gossip about her didn’t bother her one bit and let that slide without further comment. The blueriding twin’s analysis on things, however, deserved a remark of some sort. “Ryvian also doesn’t think that often so when he does, it’s likely a bit warped and leaves him with a headache.” It wasn’t that he hated the twins and in fact found them both interesting in their own ways. But sometimes, R’vi was a bit clueless and too laidback to truly grasp a situation.

“Without worrying about his comments, what do you think about Venseth’s lack of chasing?” It wasn’t like he was able to offer any opinions on the matter when he knew he didn’t have all of the facts. There was some truth in what R’vi said. They were taught in Candidate classes that dragons wouldn’t rise or chase before their rider was of an age and mind frame to handle such an experience. His gaze narrowed as he studied Indivara’s face, trying to read what she wasn’t telling him yet.

V’ler’s quip about R’vi was enough to surprise an inelegant giggle out of Indivara, the sound corrupted by a hiccup, the combination causing Indivara to fall into a short coughing fit as her body tried to figure out what it was she was expecting of it. Once she was able to function again, Indivara tilted her head against V’ler’s shoulder, considering the question he had put forward. It wasn’t a new question, and in fact Indivara had done far too much thinking about it over the past months – turns even – since Venseth had matured enough to chase, but simply hadn’t.

Indivara wrung her fingers together, twisting them uncomfortably as she chewed over her thoughts and the things she might say, but wasn’t sure how to phrase. Sliding off the bed and away from V’ler suddenly, Indivara paced the length of the bed, back and forward, several times as she continued to twist her fingers together. The question V’ler had given her beat against her mind like the beating of a drum on a party night, and Indivara released her hands, just to tug on the end of her braid in agitation. After several moments, she paced back towards V’ler, and stopped right in front of him, so close she was pressed against his legs; she was trembling visibly.

“I’m afraid,” she whispered, hands gripping V’ler’s thighs just above the knee, her hold tight. Her voice was husky from crying, and blue eyes were flickering, with Indivara unable to meet V’ler’s gaze but determined to look at him, as if by doing so she somehow counteracted the fact that she was trembling in terror of both her admittance and the fear just the thought of Venseth giving chase was able to impart on her. She knew as she spoke the two simple words that she was at fault for Venseth not feeling like he could chase; she was a terrible dragonrider and a failure to her lifemate. Her bottom lip wobbled with the threat of more tears, but Indivara’s determined gaze finally met V’ler’s, her eyerbows furrowed together as she fought off more tears.

Afraid. Of course she was. V’ler didn’t think many people weren’t before entering their first flight. He could only imagine what riders of female dragons went through knowing they’d be the prize and have a horde of horny men banging down the door to get to them. Out of everyone Indivara knew, V’ler felt she had picked the right person to talk to about the mountain that was chasing and how it affected the rider.

V’ler eyed the hands on his knees for several seconds before gently prying them free so he could shuffle her aside to allow him room to stand. A moment later he was across the room fetching his forgotten glass of wine and returning to place it in Indivara’s hand. An order to sit and drink it was given while he took up the position of standing and eyeing the girl.

He didn’t remember all of the details of the first time Veeth decided to chase but he remembered enough and he wasn’t going to sugar coat the experience for her either. “It’s scary as hell, honestly. I remember fighting against Veeth’s control and not wanting to lose myself to the lust and worried what would happen when I did. I spent most of the flight disorientated and trying my best to stay me.” The fact that it was Krypth’s maiden flight and he viewed Jada as a little sister definitely didn’t make giving in any easier. So many emotions happened in such a short amount of time that V’ler was surprised he didn’t end up crazy from trying to fight them all off.

Of course grabbing Talian when he finally did end up losing control had been close to emotionally ruining him and it strained their friendship for a bit. He wasn’t one for ever censoring a story but he wasn’t sure how to approach that part of his experience just yet. V’ler leaned back against the wall and crossed his arms in front of him as he considered what advice he did have to offer to help her accept flights and finally gave a small nod of approval for what he came up with. “I went to some older riders that I could trust and asked them for help on maintaining some level of control after losing a flight since that was the biggest part of my fear due to how my first time chasing ended.”

He paused, letting Indivara come to her own conclusions and absorb the knowledge he was sharing if she wanted to and then continued, “I was also told having a flight buddy is an excellent way to avoid grabbing someone you didn’t mean to. While they weren’t necessarily mine, D’hys and Z’ia liked to grab me for some loser fun but I don’t recommend them and their… quirks.” V’ler tossed a wry smirk at Indivara and again let her form her own conclusions on that matter. “But it does help knowing you have a sort of safety net beside you, someone you don’t mind and know is in the same position as you are.”
