2023/08/04 Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Thistle!

C’dhin gave a low grumble of annoyance when he checked on the spice stock and saw the shelves were in a sad state. He knew things would be a bit tough for a while still with all of the Weyrs now being open and whatever supplies they had had between Katila and Telgar now being shared, but this was sad. This was Telgar! Did the others really have to rob them so much? Surely they could go down to Katila and spend the afternoon farming for their needed items or even playing nice to their Holders in the effort to start earning tributes again.

Not that it really mattered he decided as he left the kitchen and headed back to get his riding gear. He hated taking from the main stock of supplies since he didn’t know how long they had been on the shelves, who had pawed through them, or coughed on them. Going to the Telgar market seemed like a better idea so he could buy fresh ingredients. But isn’t that kind of the same thing? Or worse even. You don’t know those people, what they did, or how long the stock has been sitting out.

C’dhin groaned as his annoyingly perceptive green dragon added her two cents. Yeah, kind of. I guess, he finally agreed, mostly to shut her up before she nagged him to death about it. But, she did have a small teensy point in that he didn’t know the people that well or if their fruits or spices were fresh. However, he had to believe that if that vendor wanted to make it through the winter or not be shunned by everyone, they’d be honest and not do anything to their wares.

Besides, he’d ask around about the vendors before committing to anything.

Twenty minutes later and he was touching down in the open field not too far away from the market square. Coroth curled up comfortably in the sun once the riding gear was removed, despite C’dhin trying his best to be lazy and insist he wouldn’t be that long and she could wear it. The bossy green had a way of winning their arguments but C’dhin usually didn’t mind since she also backed off on the ones that were more important to him.

His riding jacket was left on as the autumn weather was starting to roll in. He had grown up in the Bitra region and had been used to the cold – enjoyed it, even – but several years in Katila had literally warmed him up and now a cool breeze was enough to make him shiver and contemplate heading home to sit by a hearth. Still, it was nice to see the signs of the changing seasons. Katila had seasons but it wasn’t like this. Here he could see the leaves starting to go from green to beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow. Even the fashion changed in tones and style. It was kind of fun to see what the hoity-toity ladies would be wearing, though he doubted many of them actually ventured to the market.

C’dhin was pleasantly distracted for a bit, people-watching as he wandered the square. His mission of finding what he came for was forgotten for a while until the scent of delicious freshly baked pies wafted towards him and his feet moved to check it out. He was tempted to try it but declined, moving aside for a woman that actually wanted to purchase a pie to go with the evening meal.

Some time was spent circling through the area, checking out the wares and rating what he saw but he wasn’t any better off than when he started. With a sigh C’dhin looked around for someone that looked like they’d be willing to talk to him and even help him, and finally wandered over to a man that didn’t look as busy and flustered as some of the other people walking around.

“Excuse me, would you happen to know which spice vendor is the best one? I’d love if they had cinnamon if nothing else.”

Khoemi barely managed to refrain from rolling his eyes when he felt someone come to a halt not far behind him. He was quite tempted to ignore the fellow, and was unsure why he didn’t do exactly that, even as he turned around to see who was speaking to him. Expressive hazel eyes took in the anxious expression on the other man’s face, noting their similar height just moments before he took note of the dragonrider attire. Khoemi’s expression stiffened into something that was supposed to be blank but mostly just made him look somewhat constipated.

The first response Khoemi had brewing behind his lips was a sarcastic snip about how he wasn’t a baker, and thus, why would he know such things? Unfortunately, while he may not be a baker, he was prone to being dragged along on outings with his wife; she wasn’t a baker by any means, but she did happen to know where most of the good ingredients could be scored and how to put together simple sweets. Khoemi preferred it when she didn’t make such attempts – after all, they had household staff for such things!

So, instead of making snarky comments, Khoemi settled for staring in what he hoped was an unsettling way at the anxious looking dragonrider (How did one tell what type they were, again?) who looked far from the self-important and imposing figures Khoemi was used to seeing strutting around. He looked a bit old to be one of the hatchling riders, but the man was quite sure he was no one of interest in the scale of things.

“My wife prefers the one a distance in that direction.” And he pointed to back up his statement. It wasn’t a far hike down the path, though the milling shoppers could make the short distance feel like an eternity. Khoemi was not fond of the store; it smelled strongly of an assortment of herbs and spices that made him sneeze and gave him a headache. “I forget the name, but it has flowers painted on the sign. You can’t miss it.”

Staring pointedly at the dragonrider, Khoemi waited for him to take his leave.

C’dhin wasn’t always the most observant and this was one of those times. He didn’t notice that the man he selected as looking like a rather friendly and helpful sort didn’t want anything to do with him and grinned brightly at the assistance. A glance was given in the direction that was being pointed at and he glanced around at the shops he could see close by, hoping one of them was the right one, though it looked like the baking stand in question was likely a bit further down.

“Thanks for the help!” He chirped happily but then gave a small frown at the realization that while he knew what the sign looked like, he’d still have to go on a bit of a hunt. Unless the man’s friendly spirit extended a bit further. He studied the Holder for the briefest of moments and then gave a low chuckle and ran a nervous hand through his hair, making him look much younger than his twenty-eight years. “Uh, would you mind coming along with me? I’m not the best at haggling and I really don’t know the area let alone the people. I’m originally from Bitra.”

Also the little fact that living in Katila kind of ruined a lot of your social skills and ability to function around normal people. C’dhin did his best not to scrunch up his nose in annoyance or roll his eyes at his dragon’s input since he didn’t want the stranger to think he was making faces at him but then sighed and tapped a finger against his temple.

“Sorry; chatty dragon. She’s sweet… sometimes… but likes to tease me.”

Khoemi didn’t bother to hide his disgruntled expression when the dragonrider went from cheerful and apparently off to find his wares, to frowning and begging for further assistance. Hazel eyes narrowed, and his lips thinned into a flat line. “Didn’t they teach you how to haggle in dragonrider school?” His dry tone left much to be desired, and his expression altered little when C’dhin indicated his dragon was speaking to him. Khoemi was stuck trying to remember which one was the girl dragon as he indicated with a sharp motion that C’dhin should follow him.

Gold was the one that laid the eggs, and the bronze the one that sired them. He could remember that because gold was one of the preferred metals to work with for women’s jewellery and bronze seemed to go hand in hand with the gold when dragonriders were around. He was pretty sure the brown and blue were both male, which left the green as the female that his trailing rider would be bonded to. The conclusion of which was that whomever he was, he was no one of importance.

“This is the one,” he paused, stepping off to the side and indicating the doorway beside him to the greenrider. Khoemi made no motion to enter the building; he could already smell the overwhelming scent of herbs and spices and was not interested in the headache that would come from entering there. He was hoping, now that he’d shown the greenrider where the building was, he’d have forgotten about his request for Khoemi to barter for him.

“No,” C’dhin mumbled as he fell in step behind Khoemi. He was pouting, wondering if he should have been taught such a thing in the so-called dragonrider school and if the new weyrlings would get such a class now. Katlia hadn’t had a need for bartering and haggling so it was understandable why such a class was skipped for him. Then again, if he was to take the old dragonriders seriously, they never haggled either because it was expected that Holders would just gift things to them as thanks for their safety or some such thing. A glance up to the sky confirmed it was still just another normal day so C’dhin still had trouble comprehending what exactly he was supposed to be training for in order to keep everyone safe.

When they reached the right place, C’dhin eyed the doorway, then his companion, and sighed. It was obvious to him now that he had worn out his welcome and should be grateful for the assistance he got out of the man who was likely busy. At least he was shown a spice shop and one that his wife preferred so it had to be a good choice. C’dhin finally smiled, brushing away the gloom of having to try his best at getting spices on his own and took a step forward before remembering his manners and turning back to Khoemi.

“By the way, I’m C’dhin of green Coroth. If you ever need a ride somewhere, ask for me and I’ll help you out. Thanks for the assistance with the shop,” it was only fair to offer something up in return since he had asked for help.

Aw, your first step towards successfully bartering. You received a service and offered one in return. Well done, C’dhin. C’dhin continued to smile through his dragon’s teasing, doing his best not to react to the bait she was laying for him and turned to head inside.
