It had been a wonderful but rather long day.

Morning went as it normally did; struggling to get out of bed due to her belly, and waddling around feeling like an overfed herdbeast ripe for the plucking by a hungry bronze. There weren’t many chores left that she could properly help with now that bending and lifting weren’t advised by the Healers so after breakfast, Rhaedalyn worked on mending some clothing belonging to various dragonriders which passed the morning uneventfully.

Lunch, however, was special. It was R’nya’s birthday and combined with Kahleena’s assistance, a picnic feast fit for a lord was put together. They spirited the bronzerider away from the Weyr proper to a quiet nook in the forest that was open to the warm midday sun shining brightly despite the threat of rain later that day. Rhaedalyn had adjusted one of her favourite dresses days earlier to fit over her baby bump – though to her it was more of a mountain-like bulge than a simple bump – and accessorized with one of her floppy hats to keep the sun from her eyes. In her opinion, it was a wonderful afternoon with plenty of delicious food that hadn’t been burnt by her hand, though the small tarts were a tad more golden than she had aimed for, the company was excellent, and R’nya seemed genuinely pleased to receive two new shirts for his birthday gift.

The only down side that harassed her shortly after lunch was the cramping. It wasn’t unusual to have such things as the Healers had assured her early on that it was bound to happen and often any discomfort she had could be passed off as gas. That conversation left Rhaedalyn with red stained cheeks but she accepted it as a fact of life and all part of the joy of being pregnant. These cramps, however, seemed different and even a bit stronger at times, but she supposed Kahleena’s new dish with extra spices was the culprit and continued her day as best as she could, ignoring the pain.

It was only when she was getting ready for bed after a bath that evening that Rhaedalyn knew something was very off with her summary of what ailed her. She had just about reached her room when a sharp pain brought her hunched over and leaning against the wall for support. That was something new and not so enjoyable! The pain was so surprising Rhaedalyn hardly even noticed someone come out of their room and ask if she was all right. A shake of the head and a polite request for a Healer sent the person off but her firelizards that had been playing chase around the hall now surrounded her, chirping in concern.

Rhaedalyn managed to get back to her room and into bed just as a Healer came in. The concerned woman that had originally found her was asked to leave and a quick examination was underway. After several questions, it was determined that her water broke either before or after her bath, which was why she hadn’t noticed, and that she was indeed in labour. Rhaedalyn was adamant that she couldn’t be, given she was told it’d be another week or so but she also wasn’t naïve enough to believe pregnancy was a perfect clock without any hiccups in the timing. Still, that didn’t mean she was ready!

Oh, she was definitely ready for the child to come out but the actual act of it all had started to terrify her in recent days and now that it was upon her, Rhaedalyn had no idea what to do or how it would go. She couldn’t do it alone, though, she knew that much. Tears started to well up, knowing that the father should at least be in the next room if not beside her but all of her dreams of a perfect life with a marriage to a wonderful man were dashed when Z’ia shoved her away. Not that he was the father, but it still stung to know that she didn’t have anyone there now.

Unless she called for R’nya. He was always there for her and the other girls that needed him. It wasn’t fair to call for him on his birthday when he was likely having some drinks with friends or wherever it was he went when he left for the evening. Aradissicath likely knew but she never shared anything more than R’nya wasn’t around and D’hys seemed in charge of the wing if there were any issues. But as the next contraction hit, she found she didn’t have the strength to go it alone and Whisper was sent to find the bronzerider.

Shh, child. You are stronger than you think. Look at all you have accomplished in life. This is just another obstacle to overcome. If I can do it, twice I might add and with a lot more than what you’re carrying, than you can do this. Aradissicath spoke in soft tones, sending comforting vibes through their bond. If the girl worked herself up too much before the baby was actually ready to come, they’d have such a mess to work with. When Rhaedalyn was focused and with a calm head, she could do wonders and that was what they needed. Having R’nya with them was an added bonus, assuming he didn’t faint at the sight. From what Aradissicath had gathered, men were weaker than the woman giving birth. She was actually rather interested to see how it went!

As Aradissicath calmed Rhaedalyn, Whisper appeared above R’nya and his companion, chittering her happy news. There wasn’t any time to play! Rhaedalyn needed R’nya for her important moment!

R’nya had had a particularly enjoyable day.

That was not so much to say his other days in life had not been enjoyable; for the most part, they had. But generally speaking R’nya went out of his way to make sure the girls that surrounded him were the ones that had particularly enjoyable days, and he enjoyed making sure they had more good days than not. Having just about each and every one of them make sure he had a good day was a wonderful surprise and a delightful treat. R’nya was glowing about as brightly as a queen due to fly – in his own way, of course – but any one of his girls would have been able to see it, even if the rest of the population were oblivious to the fact that Mr. Stoic was bubbling on the inside with joy.

The lunch had been spectacular, and R’nya had made sure to try all the dishes, particularly those that were handed to him by either of the excited girls, though with her belly so rounded with her soon to be born babe, R’nya amended he should not refer to the two young goldriders as ‘girls’ so much as women. He hoped Kahleena would be lucky enough to fall pregnant in the coming months or years; the wistful looks she sent Rhaedalyn when the other was not looking belied both her joy for her friend and her own jealous sorrow. He had not managed to wrangle the full story from the girl yet, but he had a fair idea.

When Rhaedalyn mentioned the baby wriggling, R’nya was as politely delighted to have his hand placed on the squirming bump as ever, the battle of manners and shyness long since abandoned. R’nya could still recall the first time she had mentioned the baby moving around him and that she had grabbed his hand and put it on her stomach before either of them realised what was happening. The way Kahleena had barged in and practically pressed both hands and her cheek to Rhaedalyn’s stomach had told R’nya a lot about the unthinking action; he had wondered how many times Kahleena had near tackled the other goldrider before Rhaedalyn had started taking the initiative. The next few times had been a bit of an awkward dance before the dragons had done their thing – or Aradissicath had and Xyreith had watched with mirth.

When lunch was done – and it certainly was not a short picnic – R’nya had escorted the two young goldriders back to the Weyr proper, before diverting to take Xyreith for a bath, after which he enjoyed a thorough soak himself. Clean and shaven, R’nya had donned one of his better outfits before climbing aboard Xyreith; the day with his goldriders was to be wrapped up with an evening with Quilriana, and R’nya was no less delighted by that then he had been by lunch!

Fortunately, for R’nya, Quilriana, and little Miss Whisper, the two humans were enjoying lazy pillow talk and teasing touches when the gold firelizard popped into the bedroom chittering her news. While the bronzerider had been slow to pay her attention, once Whisper had managed to convoy her news R’nya all but fell out of the bed in his surprise and haste, neatly stealing the sheet he had been playfully fighting with Quilriana over in the process. Hastily reclothing himself – and being saved from wearing his shirt inside-out only by his companion’s laughter – R’nya pressed a hasty but no less affectionate kiss to the woman’s lips before dashing to find his dragon as quietly and quickly as possible. There was no need to wake up everyone within the area!

Xyreith was near dancing on the spot when R’nya finally met him, lowering himself so much so that R’nya very nearly toppled right over the other side when he flung himself atop the great bronze. A few moments later, and Xyreith was replying to the watch dragon’s greeting, and angling in on where Rhaedalyn was, urged by information given to them from the distracted Aradissicath. While Xyreith trotted happily off to be with his mate, chortling to himself about R’nya and thoroughly enjoying the images he would share with Aradissicath when she was of a mind to relish them, R’nya peered with wide eyes through the doorway and into the room where Rhaedalyn was holed up.

The bronzerider’s eyes opened wider still at the pained sound Rhaedalyn made as a contraction hit. It was not that he had never seen nor heard a woman in labour before – he certainly had. Rather, it was the fact that it was Rhaedalyn who was so very clearly not enjoying herself and the fact that the good for nothing Z’ia was both responsible and disgusting enough to duck out of the responsibility of caring for the woman and the child by crushing Rhaedalyn’s heart and leaving R’nya to mop up the mess. Well, that really was just vulgar behaviour!

Not that R’nya thought for one moment having the bluerider around was the better scenario. That, however, was not the point! Creeping into the room carefully so as not to bother any of the fussing healers, R’nya found a mostly out of the way spot by the side of Rhaedalyn’s bed, brushing her hair off her face, expression concerned as he offered his other hand for the purpose of being crushed.

Boy or girl?
… It has to be born before I can tell you that!
… Your guess, Sir. Do you think it will be a boy, or a girl? He couldn’t believe he had to actually spell it out, and the disgust was plainly apparent in the bronze dragon’s expression, posture, and the way his voice rolled around R’nya’s mind with exasperation.
Um… Boy?

Aradissicath and Whisper both tried to get Rhaedalyn’s attention at the same time to let her know R’nya was on his way but the goldrider didn’t mind the jumbled mess of voice and image as it gave her a moment’s respite from the focusing on the pain. She glanced expectantly at the door but another contraction gripped her as the bronzerider entered and he was greeted not by a smile and enthusiastic words as were the norm but by a bellow of pain. Her eyes closed as she tried to breathe through it like a Healer guided her to and while she didn’t think it would work, Rhaedalyn was relieved when it passed and she could feel almost normal again—which meant she had enough time to worry about neighbours and felt guilty for all of her racket.

Luckily R’nya stepped up and brushed away hair from her face which had hazel eyes fluttering open and a small smile appearing as the bronzerider’s presence was acknowledged. She gratefully let her hand be taken and gave it a light squeeze of gratitude, already feeling a bit stronger with his presence. It had been a long day that took a lot of energy out of her and now going into labour wasn’t exactly rejuvenating. All she wanted to do was close her eyes again and fall into a sleep that was filled with her old dreams of romance and chivalry.

Unfortunately she had Healers stating her progress in dilating and that she’d have to start pushing soon. While she was more than willing to have the baby out of her, Rhaedalyn didn’t like the sounds of what was to come and sent R’nya a quivering lip as tears were held back. This wasn’t as glamourous and wonderful as she always thought it would be! Pregnancy in general was a tossup in that area as well. Some of it was amazing, like feeling the baby move, but she didn’t like being sick, feeling so fat and ungraceful, and simply not feeling like herself.

While she tried to think of something to say to R’nya, contractions and Healers kept interrupting her thoughts until enough time had passed that pushing and hand-gripping had some effect on progress; and her mood.

As another tear trickled down her cheek, Rhaedalyn was growing too tired to try to keep everything under control and finally gave into her whirlwind of emotions and used her voice for more than cries and grunts. Turning her gaze onto R’nya instead of the Healer with currently questionable skills, questions and accusations were aimed at her friend and protector. “I can’t keep going, Ren, why do I have to do it? We slept together, you’re just as responsible, so why do men not have to deal with this? You always wanted me safe.”

The Healer ordered her to push again and Rhaedalyn obeyed if only to stop the pain and gripped both the sheet and R’nya’s abused hand harder than the last round as she nearly screamed the line every expecting mother before her had uttered, “this is your fault, R’nya!”

( xD Almost posted on Z'ia's account haha)

Contrary to his calm appearance, R’nya had little to no experience with women in labour. His own mate had not lived long enough to give birth, taking the child’s life when she took her own in dragon-loss grief. The goldriders that were currently a part of R’nya’s posse either had not had children, or had them before they had gotten to know each other. He had no idea about what was happening or what to do, beyond the general knowledge that was shared around. He knew to hold her hand – or let her crush his – and he knew that whether he was silent or wordy, someone would growl at him.

When the sad, pleading look was sent his way, R’nya gave Rhaedalyn’s hand a gentle, encouraging squeeze and a small smile. She could do this! She was doing wonderfully already – the healers kept saying so, so it must be true – and she was going to be a fantastic mother, he knew it!

When the accusations started coming his way, R’nya flinched, but he did not interrupt or argue. Some of her words were lost in the bubble of healers and directions they were squawking at each other like a flock of chickens. As a result, he did not notice the ‘you’re’ as he may have in other circumstances. He did sigh softly though, and gave the girl’s hand another gentle squeeze, using his free hand to brush sweaty hair off her forehead. “Of course I want you safe, Rhaedalyn.” He kept his voice calm and gentle, amused by the accusation but refusing to show even a hint of that emotion. “The healers are going to make sure you and your baby are exactly that.” Faranth forgive him the havoc he would bring down upon them if they did not.

“My fault?!” R’nya’s voice was somewhat high pitched, in part from the death grip Rhaedalyn had on his hand, crushing his knuckles together and in part from the indignation resonating within his voice. How, under the threadless sky was it his fault that the randy little bluerider had knocked her up?! R’nya was not going to take the blame for that one! He had not wanted them together in the first place! Z’ia was a slimy, good for nothing little tunnelsnake and things had definitely turned out the better with the selfish little bastard taking a hike – though R’nya could have done without the girl being heartbroken and he could certainly do without her laying bluerider blame on bronze shoulders!

“Of course it is,” R’nya grumbled disgustedly under his breath, nostrils flared in indignation, but unwilling to fight with the woman in labour. He should have broken them up; he should have prevented them getting together in the first place… A whole list of should’a-could’a-would’a that he had not acted on, for some reason or another that was usually the result of him trying to do what was best for Rhaedalyn at the time. But blaming him for the bluerider’s potency? That was just cruel and even in labour, R’nya wouldn’t have expected such a low blow from one of his favourite goldriders.

Xyreith laughing hysterically in the back of his mind was not helping the sullen bronzerider any, either.

“Yes, it is,” Rhaedalyn agreed through clenched teeth before slumping back against her pillow, convinced she simply couldn’t push anymore. She was getting rather close to telling everyone that kept yelling at her to keep going exactly where they could take their advice and shove it but rationalization kept her from saying anything. That, and the fact that R’nya seemed a bit too grumbly for something he admitted was his fault distracted her. He didn’t seem overly convinced of the fact!

“Next time Xyreith flies Dissi,” she began, then paused for some deep breaths to keep calm and prepare for the next round of commands to do her part in getting the kid into the world, “I’ll be sure he takes me on a few quick trips to prevent this from happening again!” Whether she would mean that later on was hard to say since she had always loved children and had dreamed of a quiet life raising little ones that would make her husband proud, but right then, as she gave what would be the last push, Rhaedalyn was quite content to spoil just one child and didn’t give a damn if the father was proud or not. The idiot man!

As she sank back into her pillow once more with all of her energy leaving her body and the death grip on R’nya’s hand vanishing, Rhaedalyn heard a baby’s wail and managed a tiny smile of relief. That was a good sound, despite the fact that it was in truth it was one of her least favourite sounds. She may love children but crying was something she could do without.

You did it, Rhae! You brought your own little one into the world. What is it?  The great gold dragon had been content to curl up beside Xyreith as she focused on Rhaedalyn and attempted to soothe fragile nerves through the ordeal and offer encouragement like the girl always did for her when clutching but now she was on her feet and trumpeting her excitement and the news to the other dragons in the area. Will the child ride gold like you or a silly bronze like the father?  She spoke to both her rider and Xyreith as she sent a glance over her shoulder to the bronze dragon, teasing him with her words.

Rhaedalyn slowly opened her eyes when one of the healers came back over after quickly tidying up and bundling the baby in a blanket. The gender of the child was whispered in soft tones as it was evident the new mother was exhausted and didn’t need any further loud voices after their short time together. “A girl, Dissi. An adorable little girl.” She was far too tired to speak privately with the dragon and didn’t care what anyone else thought about her speaking aloud to the dragon that wasn’t nearby.

She will be a goldrider that I will like. What will we call her?  Aradissicath had a reputation of not being particularly fond of the younger gold dragons or even their riders in some cases thanks to events that Rhaedalyn tried to keep blocked but the gold knew she didn’t like them and didn’t need to know the reasoning why. They simply weren’t enjoyable to be around and that was enough for her.

A name? That was something she had both toyed with for a while and put off thinking about as much as possible. There had been a time where she had a name for both genders picked out when she thought the father was Z’ia and after the way he reacted and the way her heart broke, it became a bit painful to think about. It was only when Kahleena started pestering her again and the tradition of combining names became more evident with the younger ‘brats around her being more noticed that Rhaedalyn returned to the subject and thought long and hard on the possibilities.  In the end, she had come up with several but she wasn’t sure if any would be right for the child. It was only now that she held the girl and looked into her little face that one of the names stood out to her.

“Alyren.” It combined a bit of her name and R’nya’s nickname that she often used for the bronzerider but it was a part of her name that almost seemed obscure without the rest of it. But she liked it. It was a little quirky but so right in her mind. After all, she didn’t really stick out before Impressing a loud gold and the man beside her was her friend Ren more than he was bronzerider R’nya when around her. It just made sense to her.

“Our little Lady Alyren.”

Pale eyes opened wide, before narrowing thoughtfully as Rhaedalyn pushed again and the wail of an infant filled the air, R’nya tried to cope with the information that had been delivered just prior to the child. He was the father? If it were any woman but Rhaedalyn, R’nya would be disinclined to believe her words, thinking it a desire to blame someone, since the man she thought would be with her had turned tail and fled. It had never occurred to the bronzerider that he could be the one responsible; the thought had never so much as flickered in his mind.

The math worked out, surprising the bronzerider with his own denseness at missing it, though and R’nya didn’t think for a moment that the child was the result of the flight – flights be damned – he would, in that moment and forever, claim the child had been conceived in the tumble he and Rhaedalyn had shared post-flight. He was not sure how he had managed to father the child statistically, but as Rhaedalyn repeated the sex of the infant for her dragon, and R’nya who had not heard the healer, R’nya gave up on trying figuring it out, or ever worrying about it. If Rhaedalyn said the child was his, then so she was.

R’nya, usually so stoic and composed, leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on Rhaedalyn’s forehead, still brushing damp hair from her face absently, and unaware of the fact that he was both crying and smiling. Tear streaks were on the man’s face, but he was oblivious to them as his crushed hand was extended towards the child, brushing the back of one finger gently over the tiny Alyren’s cheek. Alyren. It was different, and it truly was obscure – no one that knew them personally would pick them as the parents from the name alone – but it was perfect, and that only made it more so.

“She is beautiful, Rhaedalyn.” His soft expression shifted from the child and back to the mother, a gentle smile on his lips as he dropped his forehead lightly, pressing it against Rhaedalyn’s temple, one hand in her hair and the other resting lightly on the well wrapped child. “You were outstanding,” was whispered against her ear, another light kiss finding her temple before R’nya stood back just a little, not removing his hands as he stared at the baby in wonder.

“She’s really mine?” he glanced back at Rhaedalyn, not disbelieving that the child was truly his, but unable to comprehend that she was. He did not understand why Rhaedalyn had not told him sooner, but was not sorry she had not. He would have done everything he had no differently if he had known the baby was his daughter, but he would not put it past Rhaedalyn to have feared he would have done those things because he felt obligated to do them, and not because he had wanted to. Well, perhaps he would have done some things differently – he would have worried a lot more, for fear of history repeating itself…

That train of thought was uncomfortable and upsetting and R’nya was too filled with joy to linger on it. He leaned forward again, pressing a tender kiss to Rhaedalyn’s lips. “Thank you. Thank you so much.” How could he ever express to her how truly happy he was?

How many times have you kissed her now, Sir? And that dorky smile might give it away – just maybe. I did not know you could smile that much. Do your cheeks hurt? The bronze dragon’s voice cheerfully included Aradissicath without thought, but Rhaedalyn was very carefully included for fear she’d throw little Alyren in surprise at hearing him speak to her if he just barged in. But the whole scenario was far too much fun to miss out on the chance to dig at R’nya – besides, the woman looked too exhausted to lift her arms, and R’nya was holding the child down!

Prancing cheerfully over to join Aradissicath, Xyreith added his voice delightedly to her happy chatter with the other dragons. His ridiculous human finally had a mini! Proof R’nya knows how to get laid! He tossed at Aradissicath smugly, excluding both humans that time.

Rhaedalyn had heard R’nya’s voice but didn’t really catch the initial comment of praise that came, too busy staring at her daughter. She had done it! The child was indeed beautiful as well. It shouldn’t have surprised her given Alyren’s father was handsome. When the kisses and comment that she had done well came, however, Rhaedalyn finally startled out of her reverie and turned her gaze upon the bronzerider. There was something odd about him and she barely suppressed a giggle as she realized the man was smiling. R’nya, so stoic and in control at all times, was smiling! There also appeared to be tear tracks on his cheeks as well but it was a trifle warm in the room so it could have been sweat as well. Faranth knew she was a mess from the exertion feeling sweaty, sticky, and uncomfortable for far too many reasons.

The question about whether he was truly the father or not caught Rhaedalyn by surprise but she quickly remembered things she had said in the moment of absolute pain and the belief she would never make it through the delivery. She hadn’t truly meant to tell R’nya, especially like that, but she hadn’t really meant to avoid telling him either. It was the only logical conclusion after Z’ia yelled at her and kicked her out, stating he was infertile, and while she didn’t abhor the idea of R’nya being the father to her baby girl, Rhaedalyn wasn’t entirely sure how it would work either. She had been at Katila long enough to know most dragonriders didn’t like to have a hand in raiding children, though there were some loving couples and or dads trying to help out. R’nya was so busy, though. He was a Wingleader and he helped all of the goldriders and candidates so it didn’t seem fair to toss fatherhood on him either. Not to mention the fact that he had once had a mate in the past and it didn’t end well. It simply didn’t seem fair to toss such responsibilities and memories on him.

She was close to denying the claim and passing it off as hormones and pain talking but the gentle kiss to her lips stilled such thoughts and the sincere words of gratitude killed them entirely. R’nya was happy to be a dad and Rhaedalyn was surprised to find out how relieved she was at that as well. At a loss for words, Rhaedalyn smiled in return and belatedly nodded her head in affirmation that Alyren was his.

The serene moment after a storm of emotions was quickly trampled on when Rhaedalyn squeaked in surprise as Xyreith’s voice brushed her mind. “Xyreith,” she whispered the bronze dragon’s name softly, almost reverently. Xyreith had only spoken to her once and it hadn’t been much, now, however, it figured she would be included in the conversation when it concerned teasing R’nya and her slightly as well.

She blushed as the fact she had been kissed several times was pointed out but decided to focus on the dragon’s attempt to embarrass his rider. “I hope his cheeks don’t hurt, Xyreith. Your rider is quite handsome when he smiles.” A quick glance to R’nya left her blushing yet again as she looked away and back to Alyren, still marvelling over the fact that she was now a mother.

Aradissicath chuckled at Xyreith’s excitement and comments, glad that Rhaedalyn had at least been excluded from that last comment. While she found it amusing, Aradissicath knew her rider would have been embarrassed by it and possibly flailed with the last of her energy. Indeed! It may keep some of the gold hussies’ riders away from him as well.  She still wasn’t a fan of the younger gold dragons and their riders weren’t much better. R’nya deserved better company and Alyren was the perfect way to get that.

She needs more hair though.
