J'zek's steps had a little extra swagger to them now and had since he'd impressed Sirbuth. Fuck it if he wasn't going to act like the amazing Bronzerider he now was after having impressed the best dragon in the clutch, if not the Weyr. He'd seen some of the other Bronzes and none held a candle to his. Some may have thought he should be showing a little more modesty, but that had never been his style. Sirbuth marched allow side his rider, head up and gaze focused on their destination. There was no getting around the haughty tilt of his head, a gesture that was perhaps a little foreboding in something only a few days old. The Bronze had already made a name for himself at his hatching, attacking one of his Green clutchmates and her rider. Such incidents could usually be chalked up to confusion or fear, but with Sirbuth neither seemed to apply and most agreed his actions had been on purpose. Jes wasn't the least bit bothered by the whispers or how some gave them extra space. In fact he kinda liked it, and so did Sirbuth.

Upon reaching their destination, one of the larger hot springs, Sirbuth slid into the water, paddling about while he waited for his rider. J'zek wasn't entirely sure if hatchlings were even allowed in the pools, but he didn't really care either. If someone wanted to make a fuss that was their problem not his. Will you hurry up I have an itchy spot. Sirbuth demanded as he paddled about in the spring. "I'm coming, gimme a minute." J'zek grumbled fondly as he pulled his shirt off over his head, but kept on his cut off trousers as he dropped down into the warm water. It wasn't that he was especially modest, but he knew how some of the men about the Weyr were and no one was getting a free show today. The Blue and Greenriders seemed especially prone to such afflictions and J'zek was grateful Sirbuth had impressed him before any had wandered in his direction. They wouldn't have had enough sense to choose you. The bronze confided with a derisive snort as he swam around. J'zek laughed, reaching out to grab a bag of sand and a brush from the shore. "Too right." He agreed. He'd heard a little gossip about flights and was glad he wasn't going to have to deal with that hurdle anytime soon. He'd already noticed there was a severe lack of female riders, and while relived he hadn't impresses some randy Blue or Green he realized that Sirbuth would eventually end up a dragon with a male rider, a thought that made the holdbred man cringe.

"Alright come on over and show me where that itchy spot is." J'zek directed, wading up onto a shallow ledge as he waited for the Bronze. Finding a rougher patch of hide on Sirbuth's back J'zek lathered on some soap sand and began scrubbing, grinning at the pleased croon the Bronze emmitted. I think someone is approaching. The Bronze informed Jes a few minutes later, sounding delighted at the prospect of intimidating someone new. J'zek smirked and continued scrubbing, just as eager to test out he newly minted status.

Having come from High Reaches where even summer didn’t reach sweltering, J’ver never truly adjusted to the heat of the South. He did well enough and often had some minion he could manipulate into fanning him or doing the hard labour while he lounged in the shade but he still preferred multiple breaks and relaxing when he couldn’t get someone else to work for him. It was why he made his way to the hot springs. It didn’t make much sense to want a soak in hot water in the middle of a hot day but the lake had too many people and not enough shade. Besides, the trip he was taking was more to wash away his perspiration – J’ver didn’t do something so vulgar like sweat – and the dust of the day before returning to his home in Telgar.

Most of the population was in Telgar now but a wing had stayed in Katila to maintain it and keep watch over those fools that didn’t want to return home. J’ver had been tasked with spending his day using his skills wisely and monitoring everyone. It was good to check up on loyalties, secrets, and even the mundane like how rebuilding Katila was going in case they wanted to keep use of it in the future. Since he was the best at lurking, observing, and blackmailing, it was only natural that S’kef send him. On a far more personal and selfish level, J’ver was glad for the opportunity to check up on some of the other bronze- and brownriders. S’kef wouldn’t hold power forever and it was good to sink his claws into as many others as possible to keep his own position amongst the riders secure. As an older greenrider, it was best to have friends in promising positions.

Rilaleeyth was happy for the trip as well as she got to visit with one of her only friends, Aveleth. She was off trying to visit with the blue dragon while J’ver pressed on into the little cove where the pools were sheltered. He frowned at seeing they were empty save for a man he didn’t recognize right away with a dragonet. The hot springs were always a good place for gathering gossip and making deals of a certain calibre but an unknown weyrling wasn’t someone J’ver was interested in. Then again, as he neared and saw the bronze hide, he figured it wouldn’t hurt to start manipulating one at an early age.

Another frown was given as he noticed the man was wearing shorts. How rude! It wasn’t that J’ver was looking for a show but he felt that clothes had no place in a bathing area. Considering the dragonet seemed fresh from his shell, the man was likely one of those brought in from the North and wasn’t used to the relaxed ways of the Weyr and J’ver held off saying anything for the time being since everything always came down to politics and maintaining an image. The man probably had family and would talk once given the chance.

“Good afternoon,” J’ver greeted casually as he started to remove his clothing. He had snagged a towel from Z’ia’s collection when he checked up on Rilaleeyth and set each article of clothing down in a neat pile beside it. A moment later and he was sliding into the occupied pool on the opposite side of the pool. He didn’t really like the dragonet being washed in the water either but it was almost comical how that didn’t bother him nearly as much as the shorts. He’d been around dragons and lost to the wilderness for far too long it seemed.

J'zek didn't turn or look up at the rustle of movement on the edge of the pool. Whoever it was he wanted them to know they'd only gain his attention when he was ready and willing to give it. Besides Sirbuth had already informed him that the rider who'd approached didn't look like much of a threat, passing along the mental image of a slender and dark haired man who was obviously at a physical disadvantage when compared with J'sek. The bronze rider smirked at his dragon's quick assessment and pleased by his confidence in his rider's abilities. It had been pleasing to find out that they were of a similar opinion about most things. Jes knew he would have had trouble dealing with a lifemate who was a lovey dovey, social butterfly.

He waited just long enough after the man's greeting to make it obvious that he didn't need to converse with him, but had decided to anyway. Giving the spot of hide he'd been rubbing a final swipe he finally gave the other man his attention, his upper lip curling in disgust as the rider stripped off his clothes without any sense of how to behave decently. Jes knew he'd have to get use to such things eventually, but that didn't mean he had to be gracious about it. Not that he expected aGreenrider to behave like anything other than the whores they obviously were. The fact that he'd eventually end up having to bed one in the future was disgusting, and he stomped down the thought as quickly as it came. He still had a while before Sirbuth reached an age when he'd have to endure such things.

"Afternoon." J'zek answered, focusing back on Sirbuth's hide as the man slipped into the water on the opposite side of the pool. A wise decision since the young Bronze was unlikely to tolerate the close proximity of a rider so obviously inferior to his own. Jes didn't bother hiding a pleased smirk as he scrubbed his dragon's hide, glad that the Bronze was already such a good judge of character and rank. As a Bronze it was important he knew how to hold himself to a higher standard than those lesser dragons. J'zek worked in silence for a few moments before glancing back at the Greenrider.

There weren't that many living at Katila and even with Sirbuth to keep him busy J'zek knew this man was not one of the faces he normally saw and quickly decided he must have been visiting from Telgar. He was a little envious since he was trapped in the South until Sirbuth was old enough to make the trip North. He'd be glad for the day when he could turn his back on the humid cesspool he was currently forced to reside in. "I haven't seen you around before. You one of the riders from Telgar?" He couldn't imagine what would make someone return South, but then again water did tend to seek its own level. Sirbuth lifted a wing so J'zek could scrub beneath in, having dismissed the older man as being to far beneath him to bother giving him any further attention.

“I’m seen only when I want to be seen,” J’ver countered casually as he sank a bit further into the hot water until his shoulders were covered. A good soak always made him feel better. Depending on the company while soaking could often make it even better. Having played his games for as long as he had, J’ver already had a sense of the young man in that he was holder-bred and would hold certain views but it didn’t hurt to still feel him out for more political angles that could come in handy down the line.

“I’m J’ver. While I may not be the Weyrsecond, I hold far more sway than him with S’kef, our current Weyrleader.” In other words, J’ver mentally added, it was best to stay on his good side. He straightened up once again to lean his forearms back on the pool’s edge, affecting a casual stance with the weyrling that showed he was both relaxed and meant no harm; nor did he perceive any from the other man. “I came down to check on the wing left in charge here and to see how our new dragonriders are settling in after Impressing.”

He watched for a moment the way the man attentively scrubbed at his dragonet and nodded in approval. “I see you are taking to it rather well. Your bronze seems rather content.”

J'zek rolled his eyes at the "only seen when I want to be." comment, but made a mental note to keep an eye out for the sneaky Greenrider in the future. Someone who openly bragged about being sneaking was someone he had little reason to trust. Not that he had anything to hide, but that didn't mean he wanted someone listening in on private conversations.

The name the other man gave didn't ring any bells, but S'kef did. Jes gave J'ver a longer glance. So this was the Greenrider rumor said the Weyrleader bedded. J'zek found the knowledge disgusting. One would think the Weyrleader would at least try to hold himself to a higher standard, but that didn't seem to be the case. He blamed it on the fact that the man was just a Brownrider, not Bronze. It was too bad the Weyr was under such tainted leadership at a time when it needed someone the Holds and Halls could admire and respect. No one was going to respect a Weyrleader who bedded another man.

Unfortunately J'zek wasn't in a position to protest and as much as J'ver's presence made his skin crawl, and not in a pleasent way, he was smart enough to realize it was best to remain on his good side. "S'kef must truly value your opinion." J'zek said lightly, refusing to let the man visibly intimidate him. J'ver obviously held quite the sway over the Weyrleader, either because S'kef trusted him or else didn't think much of the current Weyrsecond. "I can't speak for the rest of the group, but Sirbuth and I are settling in quite well." No need to let on how much he disliked being stuck in the South and give the other man something to possibly use against him.

A proud smirk quirked up one corner of his mouth at J'ver's compliment. Caring for Sirbuth was one of the few things keeping him sane. His love for the Bronze was as complex as it was complete and he was utterly dedicated to his care. Not that Sirbuth would have allowed him to slack off. "Yes, he's doing very well now." Jes said with a smug leer. "Were you able to attend the hatching?" He asked, curious to know if J'ver had witnessed his dragon's hatch and then maul a fellow candidate. He wouldn't say Sirbuth was prone to violence, but the young Bronze already seemed to appreciate and enjoy its usefulness.

J’ver flexed his leg as the hot water finally worked its way through tender muscles. It felt like healing from the broken leg caused by the landslide had taken ages and sitting idle for so long nearly drove him insane. Now that he was back up and moving and catching up on everything for himself – instead of relying on a few of those he held in his pocket – he found it was nice to have the quiet down time once more and relax in baths or lounge on soft bedding. Even when he was still mending, however, some things he hadn’t been able to miss. Hatchings and important announcements had him calling for minions to help move him from his room to the gathering place of choice so he could observe once more.

Sirbuth’s hatching had come at a time after he was able to walk once again on his own without assistance from people or canes. Perhaps that was why he was something akin to affectionate towards the dragonets. “Indeed I was. I’m glad I was able to make it as well as it was most enlightening.” J’ver knew who Sirbuth was and what he had done only days prior, yet he had no fear of the pair. Dragonets didn’t harm humans unless they were a threat to their bonded and while Sirbuth could certainly use intimidation tactics, J’ver wasn’t concerned, having dealt with such things all his life from humans.

“I’m always on the lookout for individuals with like minds and ambitions, after all.” J’zek was of a good age for influencing and moulding into someone useful but Sirbuth was too young still to have any sway. It didn’t matter, though, not when the two or so turns before the bronze could use his rank to get his way could be used for the influencing of the rider. It was just a shame that J’zek still seemed so… Holder. Sex wouldn’t be a good motivating factor but J’ver suspected the promise of power might be enough to keep the young man interested.

J'zek was mildly disappointed that J'ver didn't seem the least bit uncomfortable around Sirbuth. He'd come to enjoy the wariness of his fellow weyrlings, even if the young Bronze was more bark than actual bite. Both rider and dragon took a certain amount of pleasure from intimidating others. J'zek was already well aware that attempting such tactics with J'ver were unlikely to go over well or go unpunished. If the Greenrider was as close to S'kef as he hinted at then J'zek wanted to stay on his good side. He'd impressed as well as any man could hope to, but he still had at least two long turns ahead of him before he'd be able to actually use his status to his advantage.

He rubbed some sand along side his dragon's spine, using the circular motion they'd been shown to use when bathing their new lifemates. There was more to dragon care than he'd first imagined, but he found he didn't really mind caring for his dragon. It wasn't like having to do chores back home which were usually monotonous and rarely anything he enjoyed doing. It was a whole new experience taking care of something he loved as much as Sirbuth.

He looked across the water at J'ver, his interest piqued at the Greenrider's words. J'zek was still leery, wary of some sort of trap. "For what purpose?" He inquired, his voice carrying a cautious note. If the other man was going to attempt to seduce him he'd pound some better sense into him right there and then, even if he was the Weyrleader little bed warmer. He wasn't reckless enough to jump to conclusions though and was willing to at least hear the other man out first. He already sensed that being holdbred put him as a bit of a disadvantage with many of the Weyrbred riders, and he was willing to look for any foothold he could find on his upward climb.

A slow grin spread over thin lips at J’zek’s question. Good. The boy wasn’t stupid and knew to ask questions and learn more before diving in. That was something he could work with and cultivate until it was time to spring him upon the dragonriding society. “Let’s just say I’ve grown accustomed to my comfortable lifestyle and I don’t want to see it end.” And end, it would. It was obvious there were murmurings about S’kef still leading them and even if the man had brought them North once more, he still wasn’t that popular with most of the population for one reason or another. It was only a matter of time before he was overthrown or poisoned like D’ren before him.

“S’kef is only a brownrider after all and he wouldn’t be Weyrleader if it weren’t for my assistance. Imagine what I can do with a bronzerider that has a desire to sit at the top of the hierarchy.” It was true, for the most part. Sure, there were some setbacks that were on his shoulders but J’ver knew S’kef wouldn’t have been able to pull off as much as he had without him. They may have schemed together but J’ver was the one getting his hands dirty with gathering blackmail and removing the competition.

“Don’t bother yourself with the colour of Rilaleeyth’s hide as that’s not important. Just know that I can be a very powerful ally… or foe. I prefer to keep you in my good books, however, since I sense potential in you and Sirbuth.” The boy knew nothing of their society and the dragon was barely out of his shell but time would change both of those things. J’ver would make sure their Weyrlingmaster didn’t cheap out on anything and he would see to it that J’zek received special training in the off hours to learn more about rankings and riders he should befriend and avoid.

Assuming the boy was smart enough to take up the offer to work together. If not, then he would be left to his own devices while J’ver focused on his other carefully chosen bronzeriders.

J'zek raised an eyebrow at J'ver's comment, not caring to find out what sort of life style the other man was use to. For him just becoming a candidate and coming to the Weyr was a big step up. Food was plentiful and the work wasn't that difficult, and now that he was a Bronzerider things were only going to get better. Opportunities that wouldn't have existed for a simply cotholder would be there for the taking for an ambitious Bronzerider. He'd had the chance to do far more than he'd ever dream of before.

Such as the opportunity that was presenting itself right now. Just because he didn't trust the man who was soaking across from him didn't mean he couldn't or wouldn't use him. J'ver could prove rather useful and if the time came when he ceased to be so then J'zek would cut him loose, as S'kef obviously should have done a while back. J'zek was quite willing to use the Weyleader's oversight to his advantage. It was time for a change anyway, with draonrider's returning North they were going to need someone to lead them whom the Nothern Lords would see as one of their own, so to speak. A Northernbred Weyrleader who hadn't been tainted by the lax standards of Southern living.

J'zek offered J'ver an amused smirk. "I won't give it a second thought." He hadn't expected to be approached so soon and though he hadn't initially been impressed by the fact that J'ver was just a Greenrider he was beginning to warm up to the idea a bit. The Greenrider knew the Weyr and it's inner workers on a deeper level and was already well positioned to maneuver behind the scenes. "Even a Bronzerider can never have too many allies." He agreed, "And only a fool would turn down such a generous offer." He was confident that he could make it on his own, but if J'ver's assistance could get him where he wanted to be a little faster he wasn't going to refuse.

“Excellent,” J’ver regarded the young pair a moment longer, evaluating his newest investment. It would take a while to have full use of the young bronzerider but he’d make do until then. J’zek could be used for information on his classmates, those in charge of his class, and the general happenings of Katila when he or one of his other informants wasn’t around. In exchange, he’d make sure J’zek never had to struggle for anything whether it be in a lesson, getting meals, getting off, or behaving as he wanted. Of course he wouldn’t be able to cover J’zek’s ass in every situation but anything within reason and J’ver would be happy to show how mutually beneficial their arrangements could be.

He slowly stood, letting the water drip from his slim torso for a moment before reaching for his borrowed towel to begin dabbing at his soft skin –Rilaleeyth wasn’t the only one to receive a good oiling on a regular basis. “I’ll leave you to your bath now. Do keep an eye out for my golden beauty, Vixen. She works best at night and will relay any urgent or intriguing messages.” Fully out of the pool now, J’ver finished toweling off and began dressing, quietly slipping each article on without comment or glance to J’zek. He already knew the boy was far too Hold-bred for his own good and drawing further attention to a nude man’s form would only serve to irritate the young bronze weyrling.

“I shall take my leave now. A pleasant day to you both,” J’ver inclined his head and turned on his heel to begin the stroll back to Katila. He’d return the towel to Z’ia, leaving it in a pile of other dirty items and no doubt the bluerider wouldn’t even notice.
