B’jin was sitting on the bench of D’hys’ current rooms, his left leg pulled up to rest his ankle under the thigh of his right, and a large bowl sitting in his lap. He was holding it with his right hand, while his left made quick trips from the thick, chocolate batter that was sticking to the bowl to his mouth and back, dark eyes watching D’hys as he peered in at the cake that was baking. There was a smear of batter on the tip of his nose, chocolate smeared on his lips, and his fingers were suitably covered, but his clothing was as pristine as ever.

Once wing practice had started up again, B’jin had found himself rather more left to his own devises than he had been in quite a while – at least when there weren’t Weyrlings to tend to, or Larrikith being antsy. Naturally, to his distress, such demands on B’jin’s time had seemed to occur when R’nd was free, and not when he was busy; typical, really. But R’nd had further had his time claimed by, once more, trying to keep T’bia up to standards and in the same frame as his new peers. B’jin did not begrudge his lover taking the time to help the boy, but it did leave the greenrider twiddling his thumbs a lot.

It really hadn’t taken long for someone to plant the notion of learning something new into B’jin’s mind – ironically, it had arrived at the lips of general gossip, when B’jin had heard it said that it was possible to eat lavender. The man had never considered something like that, but with that thought suddenly in mind, he’d taken to very nearly annoying the two women into the void of between with his questions and demands that had only been sated when they mixed him up some tea with the flower in it, followed by some little cakes. B’jin had been positively ecstatic, and bounced around joyfully for much of the next day though he refused to tell R’nd what had him so excited.

That day had been spent nosing out cooks that were not someone B’jin was instantly terrified of. All bronze and brownriders were instantly out of the running, and while he knew I’shan was a magnificent cook, the flighty bluerider couldn’t keep his mouth shut, and even when it was full he was still prone to gossip. B’jin could not seek him out for his help, not this time! C’dhin had been someone else B’jin would have taken too quickly, but the young greenrider seemed to have taken a shine to spending time with I’shan and well, B’jin just could not risk his surprise getting back to R’nd before he was ready to surprise him.

Learning D’hys could cook had been an accident, and one that had been greeted with a pursing of lips. R’nd didn’t like D’hys, but if D’hys could cook, perhaps he would teach B’jin, and B’jin would be able to make something a surprise for R’nd, and then he could tell R’nd where it had been learned and R’nd would, maybe, not look at D’hys with such suspicion thereafter? It sounded like a mighty plan to B’jin, who had waited until R’nd was, once more, assisting T’bia was extra lessons before seeking out the other bluerider.

Brown eyes alight with excitement and a kind of mischievous delight at his secret plotting and surprise planning, B’jin had made sure D’hys was well aware of the need for secrecy – to the point where he was even keeping Larrikith carefully out of the loop. Only when the bluerider had solemnly sworn to keep the secret to himself had B’jin told him what he wanted to learn – to cook! Particularly the little lavender cakes the women in the kitchen had created – and he had waited with some anxious impatience for D’hys’ answer. Only when it came – and seemingly without a cost – did B’jin relax.

So the lessons had begun, starting with B’jin helping D’hys put together a little kitchen in the room he had claimed in the main Weyrfolk building. Keeping it a secret from R’nd had been the hardest part, and with D’hys and his lover sharing a wing, B’jin had been scrambling to make sure he was free when R’nd was occupied with T’bia or his own general socialising, so he could sneak off to study the tedious art of cooking. Mostly, B’jin was an adapt student, and took to it quickly. However, his natural patience with teaching, music, art and children seemed to come to a crashing halt when there was food involved.

Mostly, B’jin favoured quick, instant pieces that produced results within minutes. The current cake was pushing the greenrider to his limits, which were dulled only by his task of cleaning out the bowl of all leftover batter. “How much longer?” It smelled good already! Surely, it should be done by now, right? Sitting mostly out of sight, and out of mind in the corner of the room, little Shimmer gave a chitter of agreement.734.

How did he end up in such situations? Z’ia, no doubt, would say his plans were beginning to backfire on him or that he was spreading himself too thin with all the games he was playing but D’hys didn’t see himself as growing sloppy or getting weak when it came to greenriders. They were all still useful pieces of amusement with nice assets to play with and eventually break. It just seemed like lately that they came with an extra dose of needing assistance. If it wasn’t a need to be rescued from firelizards – and letting them into his sanctuary like that shimmering golden trouble in the corner -- than it was needing extra training for their wing or now, it seemed, learning how to cook.

If it had only been cooking, then D’hys wouldn’t have minded nearly as much but the greenrider that had been bouncing with hope had wanted to learn how to bake as well. D’hys was more of a stew man rather than a cupcake man but since it was B’jin, he had agreed and made it seem like it was a pure act of kindness with nothing needed in return. The simple fact that B’jin would be trapped away in his room and R’nd would have to suffer with that knowledge and who helped his mate learn how to bake for him made for a happy bluerider that stared at the rising cake. So he had stalled B’jin with their first few lessons with the basics and simple meals that could easily be picked up while D’hys spent some of his other free time getting some of the kitchen sluts to tell him how to bake a cake and use lavender.

“Soon, B’jin. We don’t want it to be gooey in the middle and ruin everything, do we?” D’hys moved away from the oven and chuckled at the sight of the man. Leave it to a greenrider to make such a mess and invite trouble without even knowing it. Keeping himself in check, D’hys simply went for the classic and innocent move of quietly pointing out there was something on B’jin’s nose and moving in a bit closer so he could wipe it off with a finger. It was tempting to lick the man’s nose or cheek but that would likely send B’jin into hysterics so D’hys settled for a finger that he then proceeded to lick.

A glance into the bowl showed B’jin hadn’t thought to share; not that D’hys really would have been interested. He allowed himself a small snack of sweets on rare and special occasions but for the most part he didn’t care for them and was happy with fruits and vegetables which complemented his rigorous exercise regime. Still, he sucked his lower lip out at B’jin, “you didn’t leave any for me? That is most distressing, B’jin. It makes me want to be mean and not let you have any of the leftover icing now.” His grin was playful as he grabbed the vacant chair and waited.

B'jin, in his usual capacity for being utterly oblivious, was quite unaware of how R'nd would likely view his being tucked away with D'hys for cooking lessons, let alone how the Weyr itself might view the sudden arrangement. All said and done, B'jin was completely unaware of the whispers that often accompanied D'hys' name, from the true, to the false, to the extreme, in either realm of  positive or negative. All B'jin honestly knew was that d'hys was being so nice and helping him out and that was all that mattered!

A frown marred B'jin's face as D'hys spoke and he puffed out an exaggerated grumbling sigh of agreement; he was clearly displeased by the prospect of having to wait yet more. Hadn't they waited enough already? Clearly not, Larrikith drawled, and B'jin could sense the mental eyeroll the green dragon gave in addition to the words she spoke. He ignored her,  partly because that was his natural response to Larrikith's snide input; mostly, however, it was because D'hys was poking at his nose and B'jin's eyes widened dramatically and he pulled his head back some. A frown returned to the greenrider's face, and only the fact that he could tell where D'hys' finger had been on top of his nose prevented the greenrider from assuming D'hys was eating his boogies.

Eyebrows still furrowed, B'jin's lips twisted into an ironic smile at the thought, but it was also more than a little disgusting to think about and the chocolate batter was so delicious that B'jin was disinclined to toss it aside because of images of D'hys eating snot. Shaking his head, and banishing the thought even as Larrikith latched onto it with a vocal chitter of amusement and sudden distraction fo going to show Ayyonth the very untrue image of D'hys sticking his finger up B'jin's nose to find dessert, B'jin eyed his companion thoughtfully. “Oh. Sorry.” Still eyeing the bluerider contemplatively, B'jin shrugged slightly. “You didn't seem like you were interested.”

Okay, so he hadn't gone out of his way to extend the bowl to D'hys, but neither had the bluerider made grabby hands that B'jin knew would have been forthcoming if the man were truly interested in sharing his bounty. His attention shifted to the icing bowl at the mention of it from D'hys, and B'jin frowned again. “Is the cake almost ready now, then?” eager brown eyes turned back to stare up at D'hys, widening emphatically with excitement.

D’hys chuckled and shook his head when the apology and explanation came. “I wasn’t really. I’m just teasing you. You can enjoy the batter since it’ll help tide you over until the cake is done – which needs a few minutes more.” B’jin was like a child with his eagerness and how impatient he could be. No wonder he had a spoiled daughter. He likely didn’t know any other way to act and had always treated the girl with quick rewards and everything she wanted. Then again, from the rumours, it almost sounded like R’nd was the one that spoiled her more than her actual father did. For a man that freaked out around children, R’nd seemed to be getting the hang of at least bribing them into getting along with him.

“Unfortunately we have to wait until the cake cools off so we can ice it. If you do it while the cake is still warm, the icing gets too runny and it leaves quite the mess.” He had been thorough in his questioning of the bakers to find out everything he needed to know about making this cake B’jin was obsessed with. When he played a game with someone, D’hys liked to make sure he knew all of the rules so he could use them to his advantage and liked to play a part perfectly. B’jin considered him a friend and one that knew all the secrets to cooking and baking that he needed so D’hys made sure that he actually did have a handle on all the intricacies.

“I wouldn’t suggest cooling it with a trip between either. I’ve never done it myself but I’ve heard it sucks out the moister of the cake and leaves it cold and dry. Not a very tasty treat.” His new favourite greenrider to mess with in flights, C’dhin, was a huge fan of baking and talked far too much. D’hys had heard about the man’s ideas and how they turned into horror stories or failed experiments when he hadn’t really asked for any. At least now he could use them as a warning for B’jin before the man’s impatience had him stealing Zeianth for cake-cooling duty.

D’hys leaned forward and rested his elbow on the table and set his chin in his palm as he gazed at B’jin, “so how shall we pass the time until we can ice the cake?”

B’jin frowned at D’hys for teasing him, but the expression quickly morphed into that of a pout as he was informed – once again – that the cake needed more time before it would be ready to come out… then it would need even more time to cool down before they could ice it?! The greenrider’s expression was quite comical as he stared at D’hys in dismayed irritation. Cooking was rapidly becoming less and less delightful and far more of a chore. No wonder he had always left it to N’mall to take care of! That was more because you were impatient and either undercooked things, or got side-tracked and burned them, Larrikith inserted dryly, drawing on B’jin’s memories to point out the greenrider’s flaws. B’jin shoved her away from the forefront of his mind.

The beginning of D’hys’ warning about cooling the cake between had brown eyes sparkling with delight and anticipation. Larrikith could take it for a quick trip and bring it back just waiting to be iced and it would be fantastic and B’jin’s thought was cut off mid ramble as D’hys finished his warning and B’jin glared at him. “You suck,” he stated firmly, clearly dismayed by all the waiting, and returned his attention to cleaning out the bowl of batter. It was nearly done with, and by the time D’hys had finished framing his question for time-passing, B’jin was setting the bowl aside and staring cross-eyed down his nose as he held his hand carefully away from himself. Uncrossing his eyes, B’jin gave D’hys a one shoulder shrug, and slipped off the bench so he could wash his hands and face in the basin.

“I dunno, it’s your house.” B’jin flicked the other man a slightly amused frown over his shoulder before drying his hands on the little hand towel and wandering back to the table. Flopping into a seat on the other side of the table, B’jin blinked at the bluerider. “Whatever you normally do to pass time while cooking, I suppose.” He waved a hand absently, lolling his head to one side to give D’hys a slightly bemused look, before smiling at Shimmer, who chirped happily.

D’hys refrained from commenting on the statement that he sucked. He knew it was said in the innocent manner of him being a killjoy but the dirtier form of the sentence lingered with him and he smirked at B’jin’s back while the man washed up. It would have been so easy to point out he never sucked but B’jin was more than welcome to show off his skills but it would have likely gone over the dense greenrider’s head anyway. No sense wasting such comments that would end up confusing the man or even potentially freaking him out which would ruin all the fun D’hys was still hoping would happen sooner rather than later.

As if reading his mind, B’jin set himself up perfectly as he sat back down at the table. D’hys stared at him a moment, waiting for the laugh or some sort of cue that B’jin knew what he was doing but it never came. He was as oblivious as ever and innocently paying attention to the horrible golden creature that was far too comfortable in his home. There were so many ways to respond to B’jin and any hesitation from moments before was wiped away. The man was clearly asking for trouble and D’hys was of a mind to give it to him and then play it off as a playful lesson between friends. No doubt B’jin was dumb enough to fall for it.

Instead, he laughed and gave an obvious inspection of what he could see of B’jin with the table between them. “How I kill time in such situations involves far less clothing and more sweating, my friend,” D’hys cocked a brow at B’jin, almost in challenge. Would the greenrider rise to the bait? Panic over what could be implied or innocently ask what he meant? Again, it all depended on how he wanted to play it out since he had several answers at the ready.

B’jin shifted his gaze back to D’hys when the man began speaking, a frown furrowing his eyebrows and he blinked slowly at the bluerider. Tilting his head slightly to one side, B’jin’s eyes narrowed and a look of disgust etched itself across his features; his nose crinkled. “You exercise!?” He exclaimed, staring at D’hys with a slightly slack jaw. “You’re worse than R’nd!” The only reason B’jin did any form of exercise was because of the implied threat of rank removal if he didn’t train with his Weyrlings as opposed to sitting around watching them.

What is it with blueriders and exercising? B’jin lamented silently to Larrikith, who simply laughed in response, the green dragon not bothering to articulate an answer; rolling his eyes at her, B’jin shoved her mentally to one side and returned his attention to D’hys. He gave the bluerider a disdainful look, and shook his head slightly. “I’m not running laps around the table,” B’jin stated, quite firmly. “Or pushups.” His lips twisted disdainfully at that; B’jin was extremely good at pushups, mostly because his weyrling trainer had been rather fond of dishing them out as punishment for his lazy nature.

D’hys was taken off guard – a rarity for the man that typically stayed a step ahead of everyone – by B’jin instantly going to the innocent yet correct answer. It had been worded to make it sound sexual and D’hys would admit to using free time in such ways as well but in this case, he had meant it to fluster B’jin until it was explained exercise was what he meant. So it took several seconds of staring at B’jin whine about actually doing physical work before the bluerider managed to compose himself again and gave a rather genuine laugh that B’jin had earned for stumping him.

“Well, there’s always sit ups and chin ups instead,” D’hys grinned a moment longer then let it turn a bit naughty but made sure to keep it light so as not to frighten the greenrider. It wouldn’t do to have B’jin’s naïve innocence work against him now and have him assume he was about to be jumped. “There are other more entertaining ways to work up a sweat as well, my dear B’jin.” He cocked a brow in invitation and then with a smile slid out of his chair and headed away from the greenrider to the oven.

The cake was checked on for the final time and with proper mitts on to guard against the heat, D’hys purposely bent over to show off his ass in what he assumed was a futile attempt to run B’jin’s mind down the right track, and removed the cake. The pan was set on the table, away from the impatient greenrider and his golden monster and D’hys leaned his hip against the wooden structure. “So, what would you like to do to pass the time before we can frost it?”

B’jin’s nose crinkled and he frowned at D’hys, wondering how the bluerider thought that doing sit up and chin ups were in any way preferable to doing laps or pushups. Were they not all forms of exercise? Useless, and boring, and exhausting and so many dragonlengths away from fun that they were in a whole world of other-ness all by themselves. B’jin scowled. “No, there is no—oh.” Brown eyes widened and B’jin eyed D’hys warily as he caught up to the angle the bluerider was playing.

Still looking suspicious, B’jin watched D’hys carefully as he got up, only marginally relaxing when the bluerider went in the opposite direction to check the cake and did not come prowling towards him. In general, B’jin was not particularly threatened by D’hys; but the bluerider was still a bluerider, and he still had the power to remind B’jin just how defenceless he was. Especially when B’jin remembered that none of his friends knew where he was or who he was with.

Not that.” His words were empathic, but his voice was low and his eyes wide and fearful as his own imagination took him off on boundless adventures of things D’hys had not said at all. His entire posture was frozen stiff, staring at D’hys like a Wherry cornered by a dragon (or six) and he didn’t acknowledge Shimmer as she fluttered down with a hiss at D’hys to land in B’jin’s lap. With her little body puffed up defensively, she glared at him for freaking B’jin out – her little brain not quite able to comprehend that B’jin was doing all his own freaking out.

Larrikith moved around lazily so that she could watch through a window, amused and so not worried.

D’hys tensed as Shimmer hissed at him but any fear he still held of the little bastards was channeled into a glare that was leveled on the gold nuisance. “If not that, we can always play ‘shoo the pesky flitter that shouldn’t be hissing at the host outside’ instead.” Just because he was slowly putting up with one of Z’ia’s greens – Chastity, he thought the name might have been – and allowing her to stay in the same room as him without a fuss anymore, didn’t mean he was going to continue dealing with everyone else’s monsters and having them bully him around. This one was lucky she wasn’t getting tossed out on her ass physically and she had the game being played with B’jin to thank for that.

“Otherwise,” D’hys forced an easy smile back into place, pretending he didn’t want to murder the little thing bonded to the little greenrider, “I can show you an easy dinner dish or you can head out for a while. It does take some time to cool before we should frost it. Remember, presentation can be as important as taste when trying to impress someone.” Since all the lessons were being done in order to feed R’nd, D’hys really didn’t think presentation mattered. His fellow bluerider was so head over heels for B’jin that the man could have given him an undercooked slice of cake with melting drippy icing and he would have loved it. People in love were pathetic.

I hear there can be benefits for such a thing as well. D’hys gave a mental eye roll at his dragon’s random bit of tenderness that showed up at times. None that would be of any assistance to us, my friend. It’s just a weakness to exploit. Zeianth didn’t add anything else, seeing both sides of the equation well enough on a daily basis. D’hys typically knew what was best and if that was how he viewed love and relationships, then to avoid it probably was best – for the other person.

B’jin blinked, and then turned to look at Shimmer with a slight frown, before turning that frown upon D’hys. “Sorry,” he was still frowning, not sure if he should be grumpy with Shimmer for upsetting D’hys, or upset with the bluerider for being mean to his pet. It was not very nice of either of them to act like that, and B’jin’s dismissed Shimmer, but was somewhat put out by D’hys lowering himself to the standard level of a firelizard. Really, he had expected somewhat better of the bluerider. Wisely, he chose not to add to the insults his host was crying out of, and allowed his expression to smooth as D’hys smiled once more.

“What kind of meal?” B’jin asked cautiously, not sure he wanted to traipse too far into that particular field of cooking. Cooking desserts was fun; they tasted good from before yous tarted until after you finished, and he enjoyed licking the batter out of the bowl. But actual meals? Well, they had to be cooked, and he supposed knowing several or more of them couldn’t hurt, but they weren’t nearly as much fun to cook as delicious sweets. The fact that R’nd had a sweet tooth and B’jin planned to play up on that particular aspect of his lover was a large part of it though, since it would be easier to win R’nd over with his cooking if he was cooking something the bluerider would be hard pressed to pass upon. Anyway, B’jin really had no idea what type of foods R’nd liked outside of sweets… That made him frown heavily.

The edible kind, probably, the green dragon put in tartly, her laughter at B’jin’s expense audible as she rumbled at his pout, chittering happily to herself.

“Something quick, easy, and tasty,” D’hys replied, inwardly smirking as he described both a meal he could teach and some of the sluts he grabbed to use on occasion. Unfortunately that meant the golden pest would be hovering even closer since it required some wherry meat but he was willing to deal with it. The look B’jin had given both the creature and him hadn’t gone unnoticed and D’hys did his best to reign in his hatred to keep the simple greenrider happy and malleable. The things he put up with for his games never ceased to amaze him.

“We’ll grill up some thin sliced meat in a spice mixture of our making. It serves well on a platter with cheese and bread.” B’jin had proved he wasn’t a complete disaster in the kitchen but D’hys wasn’t willing to teach him anything more complicated than that regardless. There was minimal risk of failure, so long as he didn’t end up distracted while the meat was grilling. Given that it was B’jin, it was hard to say. Luckily he had a chunk of wherry already in his possession as he was going to prep it later that evening for a few days’ worth of meals. He supposed it would be an okay sacrifice to use some for lessons and continuing to keep B’jin in the palm of his hands and coming back to him when something was needed.

“So what do you say?” D’hys asked as he went to the counter and uncovered the meat and rummaged around for a moment to bring out a few herbs and spices he had on hand. “Willing to spend a bit more time with me and leave yourself in my capable hands?” One day, the reward of having the man actually in his literal grasp would come along and it would be sweet. Until then, D’hys continued to enjoy the fact their friendship bothered R’nd.

“Oh… okay,” B’jin was fronwing again, wondering how any full meal could possibly be quick and easy. Most of them were tasty, well, almost everything that came out of the main kitchen was amazing! But B’jin also knew that the kitchen folk spent like, their whole life in the kitchen and he loved R’nd, sure, but he was so not interested in lowering himself even more on the social ladder to become a kitchen bitch. B’jin frowned at D’hys, his expression a combination of sceptical and suspicious.

As the explanation came, B’jin became less suspicious about what it was D’hys was suggesting – but his scepticism was just about thick enough to sing and dance on. “… A sandwich?” A sandwich was not a meal! It was a snack! Even if it was made with fancy grilled meat it was still a sandwich; it still got shoved between two slices of bread – or stacked onto one – and the cheese just sealed the deal! B’jin continued to eye off D’hys with a look that quite plainly said he thought the bluerider was absolutely insane.

“Fine.” The ‘whatever’ was heavily implied, but B’jin was smart enough for the moment not to spurt that off like a sulky teen, though it was pretty obvious he barely kept it behind his teeth as he slouched over to where D’hys was, watching as meat, herbs and spices were fished up seemingly from between. Picking a piece of wherry off, B’jin leaned a hip against the bench and waited for instruction as he nibbled in the pilfered meat.

A flat glance was given to B’jin as D’hys set the last of the spices down. “Not a sandwich but a combination of items that are good for snacking on. I’d actually suggest skipping the bread all together as it stacks on the weight.” D’hys refrained from glancing at B’jin’s body which wasn’t in horrible shape but was in definite need of assistance in the form of dieting and exercise. He also refrained from slapping away the hand that swiped a piece of meat. They’d be lucky R’nd received anything with the way the greenrider nibbled as he floundered in the kitchen.

A moment later D’hys was copying B’jin’s pose by leaning his hip against the counter and lightly folding his arms over his chest. “I’m going to assume you know him better so, if not a basic meal like this, what would R’nd enjoy that you think you can make?” It was hard to think of anything else as simple as slicing cheese and throwing spice on wherry meat but perhaps B’jin had something in mind. Or, perhaps they were wandering down the road of food poisoning and B’jin’s next stop should involve the Healers so he knew in advance how to treat that.

D’hys didn’t wait for a reply as he turned back to the counter and what he already had out. “I’ll show you what I have in storage and we’ll come up with something together, okay? Then we’ll ice the cake.” Then he would gently guide the greenrider out the door and indulge in something alcoholic. He had a feeling cooking was about to become quite the chore.
