Gabrin was at court the day the dragonrider came to announce the eggs currently on the sands were getting close to hatching and told those of importance the estimated time and to be ready to attend if they so wished. He put his name down for a lift down to the mysterious Katila Weyr and said he would be bringing a guest. His wife was getting to be too far along in pregnancy and Gabrin wasn’t sure he wanted to put up with her complaints on such an occasion but he knew of at least one other person he could bring. Knowing Khoemi was subject to his own invitation, the man he liked to annoy continued to be ignored as that particular round in his harassment was back in play. Some days it was far more entertaining to give Khoemi his requested space and watch him squirm as he wondered what Gabrin had planned and when he would strike again.

His adorable new aide, Ekshan, was thought about instead. The night then met in the tavern had seen the adorable boy babbling questions about the return of the dragons and since their arrangements had been made to keep the boy beside him instead of shipping him back to his sad little life on the farm, Gabrin knew Ekshan was still curious about the creatures and perhaps even the lifestyle given his own interests. It would also leave the farm boy further attached to him and in his debt and Gabrin was fond of that situation.

Leaving his wife to continue visiting with her family for the night, Gabrin returned to his home in town to find Ekshan. Last he had seen far earlier in the day, the boy was looking over the household books, a task Gabrin was glad to give away. He had hated learning all the jobs he would possibly one day have to look into if he became Lord Holder and found tending to his own household in any way to be tedious and far beneath him. Having Ekshan around to occasionally check up on such things while he went out and had fun made for a happy Gabrin.

A search around the house was given, finding the kitchen girl prepping for the following day’s meals since dinner that night had been had at court, and the maid bringing laundry in from the line to put away. A glass of wine was procured along the way and finally, Ekshan was found in his modest private quarters and Gabrin leaned against the door frame to quietly observe the boy for a moment. “I have news from the court that you might find interesting, Ekkie.” He knew the nickname was hated and it was why it was continued to be used.

Gabrin had left for court earlier in the day, taking his pregnant wife along with him and leaving Ekshan to peruse the household records. Gabrin seemed to find the job mundane and Ekshan was glad to provide yet another service under the guise of assistant. It was a big step up from digging out weeds and stones out of the dirt, and he was eager to prove himself useful. He wanted to put his former life behind him and focusing his attention on such things as the books seemed a good place to start. He wasn't entirely sure why Gabrin had taken him in, though he was grateful he had. His new quarters were simple but luxurious when compared to broom closet his old room had been. His patched and strained clothes had been replaced with items more fitting for an assistant. He'd fantasied about wearing such things, but had never thought he actually would. He'd discarded the old for the new with barely a backward glance.

He wasn't sure how long Gabrin would be away, it would all depend on how soon he grew bored of the current company. Ekshan would never admit to waiting up for him, but he usually found some reason to. Rather than spend the time with idle pursuits he set to polishing the boots he wore when Gabrin required his presence at social functions. He rubbed the polish into the dark leather, using the cloth to buff a shine into the leather.

It wasn't right that the man should be so damn capable of slipping about unheard, but Ekshan continued to polish the side of a boot with just a fraction of a pause when Gabrin spoke. He bit the tip of his tongue between his teeth at his nickname and scowled down at his boot. He knew it was used to provoke him and was annoyed by the fact that it worked despite his efforts to ignore the pet name.

Ekshan made a show of setting the boot beside the one he'd finished while waiting, wiping his hands with a clean rag before turning slightly in his seat to face Gabrin. If he was going to keep calling him Ekkie then he wasn't going to rush to give the man his attention. "And what news might that be m'lord." He finally asked, wondering just what Gabrin thought would interest him.

Gabrin still hadn’t decided if the boy was always so diligent in his work or if he was playing it up to stay in his good graces but he didn’t overly care either way. Tasks that were set to him were completed properly and in a timely manner and Ekshan always turned up presentable whenever he was needed and that was more than enough for the young lordling. After all, it was more of a game to him than anything else, even if he was playing with the livelihood of someone else. Ekshan seemed happy enough with the current arrangements as he was learning new skills, was away from the mess of a farm, and was able to explore his sexual interests a bit more. There was always the risk he’d be found boring or unwanted at any moment but for the time being Gabrin was still happy to keep Ekshan around. If he was kinder, he’d perhaps tell the man that to reassure him but it never really crossed his mind.

Instead, Gabrin focused on other matters like tossing back the last of his drink, setting the glass down on a flat surface, and making himself at home on the edge of Ekshan’s bed. One leg crossed over the other and Gabrin loosened the ties of his shoe in a slow and methodical manner, purposely drawing out telling what he had learned. By the time he started on the second shoes, he was ready to begin. “A dragonrider popped up again, as they enjoy doing lately.” The first shoe was toed off and left lying on its side where it fell. “Naturally he was attempting to earn favour yet again but this time, there was a new approach. Interested in how?” Of course the boy was interested; that was how he had snagged Ekshan in the first place. The farm boy had initially come to town looking for information on their return and Gabrin had been kind enough to answer all the babbling tossed his way.

The second shoe was removed and left to fall where it wanted like the first and Gabrin slid further onto the bed until his back was against the wall and his feet were swung up onto the bed and crossed at the ankles. He was very much at home and considering it all technically belonged to him, Gabrin didn’t care if Ekshan had an objection to him occupying the bed as he wished. “There is to be a Hatching in roughly fourteen days, Ekkie, and I am invited.”

Ekshan watched as Gabrin finished off his wine and took a seat on the edge of his bed. It was an actual bed not a simply cot, and it still felt deliciously decadent to slip between the sheets at night. A simple privilege, but one he enjoyed after having had to sleep on a hard and lumpy cot up to the point of meeting Gabrin. His lips thinned as a shoe was careless dropped to the floor, unsure whether the man was doing it in an attempt to annoy him or if he simply didn't care enjoy to set his footwear neatly aside. Ekshan didn't get long to ponder on it as Gabrin finally decided to reveal why he was visiting in the first place.

The other man knew of his interest in the Weyr, though Ekshan wasn't sure yet if he knew why. Not that it would be difficult to guess why he was so curious in dragonriders. At least half the young men on Pern wanted to become riders, despite the linger animosity between Weyr and Hold. All the political posturing meant little to him, as long as it didn't prevent him from attempting to become a candidate. He didn't know what Gabrin's feeling on the matter were and had kept his little trip South to himself. The man may have already sniffed out his desire to become a rider, but Ekshan wasn't planning on revealing anything until he'd at least become a candidate. Hoping that if that happened thing would be too far along for Gabrin to stop.

Ekshan nodded, still watching as Gabrin finished removing his shoes and made himself comfortable before he continued. His feelings toward Gabrin had been confusing from the start. This was the first relationship of his young life, there was that cothold bitch, but he refused to count that as anything other than a boyhood mistake. Gabrin was good at keeping him off balance, reminding Ekshan that he was the one in control, but providing the sort of life style Ekshan had only dreamed of. He constantly wavered between disliking the Gabrin's hold over him and gratitude for having been plucked from obscurity.

Interest flashed across his face before his usual mask fell back into place. It would be the first hatching since the dragonriders had returned and sure to entice a number of Holders even if it was obviously another bid to sway the holdouts over to the Weyr's side. Ekshan stood, talking a few steps toward Gabrin's discarded shoes and setting them neatly to the side. He wet his lips as he returned to the edge of the bed, his eagerness barely masked. "Are you planning on attending?"

Whether it was simply a compulsion to keep everything organized or Ekshan had fallen easily into his new role of servitude, Gabrin couldn’t say, but he did give a little crooked smirk when the other man straightened his discarded shoes. It was probably why Tanriel liked having the boy around; he was quiet, clean, organized, and knew how to play up being courteous and respectful when needed. Too bad his adoring wife didn’t realise those were all bonuses to the main reason Ekshan was under their employee.

“Of course I am. Why would I deny a chance to see the place they have called home for longer than you’ve been alive?” Gabrin was indeed curious about what kept them in the South for so long beyond the paranoia he had been told about. The original Weyr leadership seemed a bit off their rockers but the reasoning for staying South to keep the species safe were understandable enough – assuming his new contact could be believed. Perhaps the real reason was to form an army that could dominate once more and take what they wanted, which wasn’t too far from the current scenarios. They returned and wanted their original place among the top of the food chain but the Lords weren’t having it now that they reigned supreme.

“I also said I’d be bringing a guest with me.” The statement was left to hang between them as Gabrin crossed both arms behind his head to lean back comfortably. It was a show of how at ease he was around Ekshan, knowing the younger man couldn’t do anything to harm him. In some ways, it was a form trust but mostly, it was arrogance. Now he just had to see if his clever lover could figure out all of the pieces of what he was toying with now.

Ekshan didn’t quite roll his eyes at Gabrin’s explanation though he did give him a dubious look. He’d been with Gabrin long enough to know he wouldn’t be attending the hatching out of just idle curiosity. Many of the Holders were still upset about the stealing and wary about what the Weyr was planning next. Ekshan only hear what gossip made it to the ears of the common folk, or whatever Gabrin happened the mention in passing. Tensions still ran high and few seemed to trust dragonriders completely. He’d decided to withhold judgment until he’d found out which side he’d end up on.

The Weyr may not have been very popular with the upper classes, but it still held a certain appeal for those not born into rank. Where else could some of common birth get the chance at becoming a ranking member of society and possibly run and entire Weyr. It was what had attracted him to the idea of joining their ranks, and he knew he wasn’t alone. It was rather amusing to picture Lord Holders scurrying about in fear over having their perfect little system disrupted. They were unlikely to relish having to treat someone who normally would rank well below them with respect.

His gaze narrowed, running his tongue over his lips in an unconscious gesture. Ekshan wanted to go, but some small measure of pride kept him from asking outright. Gabrin could have already chosen someone else and Ekshan refused to look the fool by setting himself up to be refused. The man’s complete comfort only made Ekshan’s own uncertainty more obvious as his slender fingers pushed back a wayward curl from his forehead. He took a breath. “Who?”

Gabrin grinned at Ekshan, showing his approval for the cautious approach to the topic. Hopes were held high, no doubt, but he didn’t make them known. It mattered not, since the lordling already knew enough about Ekshan’s fascination with dragons to know such an invitation would be craved and sought after. That was why he’d make the man wait a bit longer for a proper answer to the riddle of the night. “My beloved wife is naturally the first person to be thought of. Alas, her pregnancy wouldn’t make her all that much fun to be around and I’m sure such a flight would only leave her rather queasy.” The hope that she’d be lost on the trip South wasn’t said aloud but it was tempting to consider bribing a dragonrider to lose her on the way. Life would be so much quieter again without her chipper babbling.

“Then I thought about my dear friend, Khoemi. I know we would have an enchanting evening together at such an event with alcohol flowing and music filling the air. However, he’s likely to play the dutiful husband and bring along his wife, even if she’s far too much of a handful and shouldn’t be let loose among that group.” Who knew what would come out of that woman’s mouth around dragonriders and their lifestyle. Then again, there was a chance she’d fit right in and they’d never see her again. Both held potential to be entertaining and Gabrin had to wonder if Khoemi really would bring the woman along.

“Though, I think I’ll extend my invitation to someone who has an interest in dragons and would be honoured and thrilled to attend a Hatching.” Gabrin had been picking at his nails, as if removing dirt from underneath already clean fingers but finally glanced back to Ekshan and gave the man another sly grin, “someone that I know won’t embarrass me with any unruly behaviour and won’t abuse my trust in them. Do you know of anyone like that?”

A pleasant surge of pride washed over Ekshan at Gabrin's approving grin. Such approval had been absent in his previous life, and now he found it nearly irresistible. It drove him almost as much as his desire to improve his status. Mention ofTanriel did spoil the moment a bit. Ekshan didn't understand why Gabrin had married the woman, other than duty. She was nice enough, but he couldn't think too highly of someone who seemed completely oblivious to the sort of things Gabrin got up to. He doubted Gabrin would actually take hthe woman along to a hatching since it would likely require that he act like a loving husband, and he didn't believe for a second that Gabrin would allow his time at the event to be spoiled by the presence of his beloved wife.

Eskan's expression hardened when Khoemi was brought up as a potential guest. He was jealous of Gabrin's interest in the young lordling. He didn't like the thought of someone else stealing away Gabrin's attentions, and the mental image of the pair attending the hatching together only fueled his envy. He didn't doubt that Gabrin would spend the entire time trying to seduce the man, and knowing him he'd likely succeed.

By now Ekshan was a confused mess of emotions, all mostly concealed beneath his stoic mask though he rigid posture revealed the strain he was under. He wasn't used to being "teased" and it showed. His desire to attend the hatched warred with his wariness of some sort of trap. Gabrin's question hung tantalizingly close, just begging to be answered. His lips parted as if on the verge of speaking, but no words came. Dropping his gaze down to the floor he shook his head, a gesture that could have been a denial or because of his inability to answer.

“No, you don’t know anyone that fits that? Shame,” Gabrin replied with a shrug, looking for all the world like he wasn’t affected by that tragic news. Ekshan was almost adorable in his floundering when put under such pressure. He knew the younger man wasn’t very good at handling teasing and it seemed he was shutting down when such an opportunity he had only dreamed of before was presented to him. It was tempting to not say anything more on the subject as a way to further pick on Ekshan but he was in a relatively good mood that evening and Ekshan had played so well with him thus far.

“I guess I’ll have to take you along with me,” Gabrin grinned as he shifted once more to lie down on the bed. “We’ll see the tailor tomorrow for a fitting. I think we can both do with a new outfit for such an occasion, don’t you agree?” He laid an expectant look on Ekshan. A little joyous gratitude would be a good place for the man to start and Gabrin would take any improvisation from there and enjoy it.

Ekshan kept his shame filled gaze on the floor, mental berating himself for being unable speak. It seemed like such a simple action, yet he hadn't been able to make himself speak up. Gabrin's casual tone didn't help. His breath hitch in his chest as he had the panic driven thought that Gabrin would now find someone else to take. Someone who could undoubtedly fill Ekshan's shoes in other areas as well. It wasn't at all reassuring and left a sick feeling of fear in his stomach. He'd quickly come to enjoy his new life and the thought of loosing it had him nearing a panic. Paranoia and doubt worked quickly to weave a dire outcome for him.

Childlike joy bleed up from beneath dark lashes as Ekshan studied Gabrin, testing the validity of his words. His head bobbed in an eager nod of agreement as relief replaced his previous fears, Gabrin was going to take him along after all. The yo yoing of his emotions was almost too much, he wasn't used to feeling so off balanced and with a less than firm grasp on his emotions.  The lordling's expected look wasn't missed, and he needed to erase his turmoil with some other activity. Proving how genuinely grateful he was for the other man's kindness seemed like a good option. He toed off one shoe then the other, nudging them beneath the bed frame before moving round to the other side of the bed.
