Rhaedalyn still wasn’t sure what she thought about Xyreith entering Mizeath’s maiden flight which meant R’nya could have ended up with Ameris -- I have a few opinions on that matter, Aradissicath put in, her bristling over the situation still very much in evidence – but she had come to a conclusion on something else. All reports of the event stated very clearly that R’nya hadn’t even hesitated in choosing someone to be with as he lost and went right for the brownrider named K’tir. Given that the reports went on to say the men enjoyed each other in the public hallway without a single care, Rhaedalyn had to believe there was something more to it than simply gold flight lust backfiring on them.

Still, she never thought R’nya was into men.

Then again, it did explain a lot. He watched over all the girls that were aiming to be goldriders and those that had Impressed the beautiful dragons and never once did he make a move on any of them. She was so blind not to have noticed before! Perhaps it was a new admission to even himself since he had once courted a goldrider that he seemed to have cared about. Rhaedalyn frowned at the memory of that night after R’nya had won a green flight and was completely out of it and lost in the past. He certainly once liked women and perhaps he still did since it was rather common to see someone interested in both genders. But it was R’nya! It still boggled her mind to think about it.

She only knew a little about K’tir. V’zire had thought highly of him but her dearly departed greenrider didn’t have anything negative to say about anyone, especially his classmates. She knew he was handsome and a bit standoffish because he didn’t go out of his way to be sociable. In a way, that made him sound perfect for R’nya.

That was why she had come up with the brilliant idea to show her support of her close friend’s relationship by inviting both men over for a dinner with Z’ia and her. Rhaedalyn knew she still wasn’t the best chef in the South but her skills had improved enough to be passable and she had enough friends with skills that something could be tossed together for the dinner without too much fuss or stressing. It’d be a light dinner anyway with the weather warming too much to even consider eating bite after bite of belly-warming dishes. A broth-based vegetable soup that was designed to be served cold, a platter of cheeses and fruits, fresh bread, and a pie she had worked hard on to ensure it stayed edible.

Perhaps she should have mentioned to R’nya what she was up to but Z’ia was told about it and he supported the idea of keeping it surprise. Obviously he saw the merits in surprising the bronzerider as well. If she only stated they were having a dinner party and he should bring a date, Rhaedalyn knew R’nya would bring Kahleena since she was good friends with the other goldrider. No way was he going to be able to avoid showing off his new love interest!

K’tir had been asked the day before if he’d be available for the dinner date and the brownrider, after a moment of eyeing her oddly, agreed with a grin that seemed almost too mischievous for Rhaedalyn’s liking but she was too excited to think on it too much. There had been rumours that R’nya had punched the man but more still that the bronzerider was simply a rough lover. Rhaedalyn had landed in bed with R’nya during Aradissicath’s flight and she came out with no more than the light bruises she had been warned about in advance. Seeing for herself the bruising, Rhaedalyn was torn between believing rumours. K’tir made no mention of it and didn’t seem to mind it so she left it alone in the end.

The day of the dinner, Rhaedalyn had everything on the table but covered until they were ready to eat and Z’ia brought wine that she was told was rather drinkable. Everything was perfect! Now, all she needed were the other two guests to arrive.

You should have brought Mizeath’s rider. the bronze dragon drawled, not at all unaware of the way R’nya was less than pleased about having dinner with Rhaedalyn and Z’ia; the bronzerider was completely unaware of the intended addition of K’tir at the private event.

That wouldn’t be fair, he sighed, frowning at the reflection of his own face in one of the small mirrors that was located in the new bathing rooms; there weren’t many of the precious things that had survived the landslide and the floods. Despite that, the entire population of Katila was evidentially as vain as the next person, since many had popped up and some people had purposefully ransacked the old bathing rooms to find the precious glasses.

To whom, sir? the dragon asked in response, enjoying the echoing silence that greeted his question, followed by the man’s soft sigh and slight shake of his head. Xyreith, smug, withdrew to leave his rider to ponder his thoughts in silence and settled back into the wallow he had managed to make for himself on the outskirts of the new Weyr, settling his chin lightly on his paws and watching those nearby go about their evening routines. Judging by some of the gossip he was hearing, some details about the evening’s events for the bronze and goldrider had leaked out. Xyreith’s lips drew back in a draconic smirk.

Brushing his fingers back through his hair with another sigh, R’nya straightened his shoulders and put in place the usual blank mask he was so regularly seen wearing. His clothing was immaculate as possible to be, given their home location and recent events, but they were clean, tidy and fit the man well enough. Adjusting his knots on his shoulder, R’nya opened the door and left the room he had been occupying, leaving it free for someone else to use. The knots were a not a new addition to his attire; R’nya had always been a stickler for propriety, but he was not overly pleased nor comfortable with the rank of Wingleader once again. His acceptance had a whole flurry of reasons behind it that R’nya was not in the mood to mull over at that moment.

With Xyreith clearly not interested in playing transporter, R’nya lifted a hand and allowed Whisper to alight on his hand, transferring her gently to his shoulder with a mild comment. It was probably a good thing K’tir had not arrived when the little gold left, for she would have spoiled the surprise. Instead, she had R’nd barely containing a grimace as she shared delighted flashes of Rhaedalyn and Z’ia being far too comfortable with one another for R’nya’s like. Once more, the bronzerider wondered again how he had managed to get himself roped into that night’s dinner.

He almost caught Xyreith’s retort, before the bronze thought better of it and sent the words scattering before R’nya could link them together. The bronzerider smirked internally; that meant there would have been a wonderful golden retort. The huffing he got out of that from Xyreith had the man almost snort out an amused laugh, but instead he refrained, stopping before Rhaedalyn’s door and knocking twice, with firm taps. He waited until it swung open before stepping inside.

Rhaedalyn nearly pounced on R’nya when she greeted him at the door. She was so excited for the evening and was happy to see her friend that arms almost swung around the stoic bronzerider for a bouncy hug but she refrained, if only just. “Thank you for coming, Ren! I know we’ll have a wonderful evening. Come, sit, I’ll get you a drink.” She bustled around the small room, ushering R’nya to an open seat opposite Z’ia before going for the drink she had promised. She was so excited but nervous as well. What if the night didn’t go as wonderfully as she hoped it would? The night had played out several times in several ways in her head since she came up with the idea but it always ended with the four of them being best of friends and laughing, planning to do another dinner date in the near future.

She let out a happy little sigh as she poured the wine. The glass was carefully brought over to R’nya. The last thing she wanted was to spill it on him! She wasn’t typically a klutz, but nerves got the better of even the greatest of men so Rhaedalyn wasn’t risking anything. She took her seat again beside Z’ia and blushed delicately as she realised it was the first time she was sitting so close to the bluerider in front of R’nya. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of their relationship but she had never had a real relationship before and it was almost odd to enjoy such things in front of a friend. She wasn’t about to shuffle away though! Once K’tir arrived, it would balance everything out anyway.

K’tir hadn’t meant to be late. He wasn’t the type to do the fashionably late routine, nor was he the one that arrived far too early. He aimed for the appointed time and tried to be there a few minutes early to avoid any frustrations that could arise. However, his daughter had needed him and she took priority over messing with R’nya in a sort of revenge for the punch thrown at him. When the drama of a nine turn old girl was handled and promises made to right all the wrongs in the world for her, K’tir left Dewdrop with her and sent Cocoa Bean off to find his son. He didn’t want the pests hanging around him that evening, especially since Rhaedalyn and Z’ia had enough between them to fill the room.

I’m so excited! We never go to parties like this and never with the beautiful Aradissicath around. If annoying R’nya currently wasn’t ranked so high, Ghaeth’s enthusiasm at trying to befriend the somewhat cranky gold would have been worth putting up with the evening. He always encouraged Ghaeth to chase his dreams which is why they chased gold dragons regularly now and he liked his silly brown to be happy. Just don’t upset her. If she wants some space, back up a little, okay? He really didn’t need his dragon being turned into a puddle by an angry gold that evening.

Reaching the destination, the pair parted ways with Ghaeth prancing over to greet Aradissicath and K’tir knocking on the door. Rhaedalyn answered a moment later and he gave a polite nod of his head in greeting. “Lady Rhaedalyn, thank you for the invitation,” he greeted her as she opened the door wider to allow him in. Once inside, he nodded to Z’ia, a bluerider he could tolerate most days, and then smiled at R’nya. Two seats were open and K’tir wasn’t foolish enough to grab what was clearly Rhaedalyn’s so he casually claimed the spot beside R’nya, greeting both men as Rhaedalyn went to pour another glass of wine.

While she was distracted with the task, K’tir turned to the clearly unhappy bronzerider and whispered, “I’d smile if I were you. You don’t want to upset the girl, do you?” K’tir was already enjoying himself and the night hadn’t even begun. It was going to be fun and he wondered how far he could push R’nya or how far the bronzerider would play along for Rhaedalyn’s sake. He wouldn’t want to upset one of his Golden Girls he played protector to but it was hard to figure out if he’d admit to being lovers in order to keep her pretty little head happy and in dream land.

Rhaedalyn’s refraining was appreciated, if only because R’nya could feel the tiny bluerider’s eyes boring into him and he was not especially interested in pressing the man’s buttons. He did not know everything, but he knew enough to know that Z’ia ran in S’kef’s circle when the mood struck him, and the shirt he was wearing clearly had J’ver’s mark upon it. He wondered idly if he should have worn the shirt Rhaedalyn had made for him; it was currently sitting on the bottom of his clothes chest, out of sight and out of mind. At least Rhaedalyn would have sense enough not to wear that crap J’ver called clothing, and if nothing else, the girl might make Z’ia something more fitting to be seen in public in.

R’nya allowed the excitable goldrider to direct him to his seat before bouncing off to fetch another glass of wine. The fourth seat did not go unnoticed, and the sly smirk that flittered over Z’ia’s lips when Rhaedalyn’s back was to him was not reassuring. Neither was the way his features fell into placid and polite happiness without any effort as Rhaedalyn re-joined them and handed him the wineglass. That small act alone set off all of R’nya’s warning bells, and the way Z’ia regally ignored him without actually ignoring him as he took Rhaedalyn’s hand and laced their fingers told R’nya that was exactly what Z’ia had wanted to do. The bronzerider lifted the wineglass to his lips to hide the pursing of them, and barely took a sip before he was lowering it once more, a clear frown working over his features.

Sir! The bronze’s voice broke through and into the front of his thoughts with unusual intensity, his single word clipped and filled with warning. The bronze dragon had begun the slow meandering of his way over while R’nya walked, and had arrived just behind Ghaeth and K’tir, eyes swirling a sudden red, his lips drawing back to hiss like a snake at the brown dragon, wings half extended in a threatening display.

Despite the sudden storm of emotions under the surface, R’nya did no more than turn his head slowly at the knock, his shoulders stiffening just barely as he heard K’tir’s voice. A glance at Z’ia showed an innocently surprised expression that R’nya didn’t believe for a moment, and he placed his wineglass on the table, standing up slowly as Rhaedalyn danced happily off to get more wine. R’nya stared down his nose as K’tir whispered, and his control over his emotions exploded, anger flaring over his face and burning in his eyes. He was visibly refraining from punching the man as he turned his attention to Rhaedalyn, not bothering to mask his feeling on the whole ordeal.

“You’ve been played,” he spat at Rhaedalyn, fingers clenching into fists, his anger clipping his words. It was that, or the girl was stupid, and even as angry as he was R’nya was not willing to believe Rhaedalyn was wilfully stupid. Ignorant, naïve certainly - but not stupid. He did not want to believe she would set him up for her own amusement, either, though it was quite clear (to him at least) that both the blue and brownrider were there for the entertainment. Well, R’nya was not playing that game. His lips twisted from a nasty sneer into a pursed line as Xyreith’s heavy, throaty growl of warning echoed through the area.

“Excuse me.” The words were sneered, and R’nya bowed slightly to Rhaedalyn as he spun on his heel – oh how he wanted to punch that smug bastard brownrider – and stalked out of the room, slamming the door behind himself in a very un-R’nya-like display of his emotions. The bronzerider stalked through the three large dragons to grab Xyreith by the side of his nostril and drag him away from Ghaeth, whom he had slowly been working at backing into the side of the building. He hated the rider, but he was not about to punish the dragon; Ghaeth was punished enough being bonded to that bastard.

Rhaedalyn turned back to the group of men with the new glass of wine in hand and froze on the spot when she saw R’nya and the expression he wore. She had been played? What did he mean? Why was he speaking so informally? Why was he so angry – and she knew he was furious. R’nya never showed emotion outside of a twitch of an eyebrow or lip but this was full on emotion that was even conveyed in his tone of voice. Worst of all, it was directed at her. The slight bow he gave wasn’t noticed as Rhaedalyn’s vision dulled and blurred as she stared at the spot the bronzerider had been standing in a moment ago and flinched when the door slammed behind him.

Aradissicath growled in response to Xyreith and attempted to push herself between the bullying bronze and the cowering brown when R’nya waltzed through them all. She was close to head butting the man across the Weyr for the pain she could feel swirling around Rhaedalyn but R’nya didn’t seem to care as he dragged Xyreith away. Bully! Don’t you dare show your face around here again until you whack some sense into your stupid skull on the trunk of a tree! She spat at Xyreith before turning to Ghaeth, her mood shifting to croon at the sweet brown and nuzzle him. He was a bit of a wimp and sweet-natured like Aveleth but he hadn’t done anything to deserve such attitude from Xyreith.

The glass of wine was set down on the table but her unfocused gaze misjudged the distance and it ended up falling over the edge to spill on her legs and shoes but Rhaedalyn didn’t notice. She was a fool. R’nya had been fine with Z’ia but it was K’tir’s appearance that set him off. She had been played? Apparently she had. The wrong rumours had been believed and she hyped it up even more with her daydreams and longing for R’nya to find someone special that he cared for. Z’ia had encouraged the date and K’tir didn’t go against it either so it seemed natural to think she had been right with her belief that R’nya was in a new relationship with the brownrider. Why would both men do that to R’nya? To her?

“Out,” the word was barely above a whisper and shaky with her emotions that were running in every direction. Rhaedalyn didn’t know if she was upset, angry, or wanted to cry but she knew the remaining two men currently weren’t wanted or needed; not even Z’ia. “Please leave. Everyone.” She glanced at Z’ia with the last word and then spun around to where the food was. The pie she had spent so much time on to make absolutely perfect for the wonderful evening she knew they would share together was picked up and unceremoniously dropped into the little trash bin. It wasn’t needed now and Rhaedalyn suddenly had a desire to never bake again. It never turned out right anyway.

Her gaze shifted from the bin to her feet, finally noticing the wine she wore but it didn’t matter. Why did she need to look her best? R’nya was mad at her, even hated her now, and her boyfriend had encouraged her to make the horrible dinner date happen. Both men had broken her heart that night and she deserved being covered in wine for being such a fool.

Not even checking to see if Z’ia and K’tir were still there, Rhaedalyn shuffled over to her bed and stripped off her dress, leaving only her slip on. The shoes were kicked off and as the first tear finally slid down her cheek, she crawled under the blankets and sobbed into her pillow. All three of her firelizards appeared and Muffin claimed the prize location of nuzzling up against her under the covers after wriggling his way in.

Reality finally overtook shock and the notion that R’nya hated her sank in. She had promised herself after V’zire and Mevrit died that she would toughen up and not let anyone get close again but she had kept R’nya, Z’ia, and Kahleena as close as she always had and now it had hurt her again. She had been made a fool of by her own doing and had one of her dearest friends that had always been there to help her through all the tough times hate her. She only wanted to do something nice!

Like everything else, she only ended up ruining it all.

Z’ia watched the sudden play of event with interest; he was surprised. Like the young woman he was stringing along, Z’ia had not expected nearly such a display from R’nya, and curiously began to work on overdrive, he would definitely have to dig up the exact details of what had made the bronzerider tick so beautifully, and at such a little tap! K’tir had not even entered the room before R’nya was reacting ot the man’s presence. Then he opened his mouth and everything exploded. It was positively glorious and Z’ia would have dearly loved to thoroughly enjoy the show – but it appeared Rhaedalyn had no such desire to let any of them do any such thing.

Instead, the tiny bluerider watched with confusion and hurt as R’nya stormed outside, as Rhaedalyn dismissed them with a pointed look at himself that had Z’ia giving an apparently useless look of heartbreak to the girl, and then K’tir was leaving. Had he not been focused on keeping himself in character, Z’ia would have laughed outright at the way the other man seemed to just shrug the whole ordeal off and leave with his dinner. Z’ia stood up slowly to follow the brownrider, but when the other went out the door, Z’ia paused, closing it gently and laying the bar across it, barring anyone from entering – or Rhaedalyn from storming out too swiftly.

Turning, Z’ia watched as Rhaedalyn slipped under the covers, and vanished into the depths of her bed. Toeing his shoes off, Z’ia set them beside the door and padded quietly with his socks on across the room, pausing at the table to savour a mouthful of wine before throwing back what was left in R’nya’s unused cup. Then he continued on his way to the bed, being sure to be quiet, though he certainly wasn’t attempting to sneak around. He simply didn’t want the girl going into some raging fit.

Reaching the bed, he peered in vague amusement at the lump that was Rhaedalyn, before schooling himself and sighing softly. Climbing carefully onto the bed, Z’ia folded his legs under himself and set his hand gently on what he assumed was Rhaedalyn’s hip, brushing in little soft strokes, he appeared to struggle to find the right words. In all honesty, the only struggle was not to laugh at the girl.

“Rhaedalyn? Love? I didn’t know. Honest.” Voice barely above a whisper and giving every indication of regret and distress, Z’ia shifted uncomfortably and his hand paused in the soft touches, and he sighed deeply. “I’m so very sorry,” whispered, and Z’ia was beyond delighted by the appearance of a tear to trail softly down his cheek. Despite that, he was quick to lift his hand from Rhaedalyn’s hip and swipe it away in an act of masculinity that doubled at drawing attention to the fact, if she would peek the fuck out from under the blankets!

“I-“ a slight pause, “I guess I’ll see you later, then.” Dispirited, and dejected, Z’ia gave the lump that was the goldrider a gentle squeeze and stood up slowly, backing unhappily towards the door he had previously barred. “I love you.”
Unless stated otherwise, Aveleth never speaks to anyone but Z'ia

Rhaedalyn tensed with the shifting of her bed under the weight of someone else. She had her suspicions about who it was but found herself oddly confused over who she wanted it to be. That was rather odd considering her love for Z’ia and how much he meant to her and made her feel safe and desired but R’nya always appeared when she was upset and needed someone and she longed for his presence as well. Then again, he was the reason she was a crying mess right then and was mad at her. It didn’t make sense to want to see him, especially since she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to say to the bronzerider. Multiple apologies would be a good starting point but the more she thought about it, the more she wondered if she was the one at fault. She had definitely misunderstood quite a bit about the situation with K’tir but R’nya could have been nicer about his reaction!

Upon hearing Z’ia’s voice, a small smile appeared. There was definite relief in knowing it was the bluerider and neither of the other two men that had strung her along. Yes, she decided, R’nya was at fault as well. If he had only talked to her after the flight with the rumours running rampant and explained everything, she would have believed him and not gone off into her daydreams and created the perfect relationship for R’nya out of nothing. Z’ia was still at fault as well for encouraging the idea for the dinner but his apology did wonders on her frazzled emotions and she felt herself softening up towards him again and peeked out from under the blanket to see him wipe away a tear.

Her heart bled for the bluerider, knowing he was in pain over the ordeal as well and her resolve to cry alone all night almost broke at the sight. However, she wasn’t in the mood to entertain a guest anymore and didn’t even want to be coddled and held in that moment. It was clear her silence was bothering Z’ia as well as he hesitantly excused himself and got up to leave, saying those three special words that made her heart skip a beat and a blush to creep across her face. She knew he loved her, he replied back all the time she said it first, but was that the first time he actually said the words?

Oh how easy it would be to throw back the blankets and fling herself at Z’ia and cling onto him as if she were drowning and he was the only way she could be saved but she didn’t. Her spirit, however, had been broken the moment R’nya snapped at her and walked out and the hard truth that she was too trusting and people could use her had shattered her. Not even Z’ia was fully trusted in her current mood but her dedication to the man made her follow through with the longing and she climbed out of bed much to the protests of three firelizards.

With a shaky breath she finally managed a reply as she stopped before Z’ia, taking his hand in hers, “I love you too, my dearest Z’ia.” A light kiss was given to lips she thought were sexy when set both in a smile and a pout and pulled away a moment later. “However, I want to be alone tonight.” Not waiting for a response, Rhaedalyn turned away and went back to hiding under the blankets.

Once she was settled, Whisper showed her golden attitude by puffing up at Rhaedalyn’s feet and hissing in Z’ia’s direction, making it very clear he didn’t need to come back. She had always been partial to R’nya and Z’ia was bonded to the horrible green known as Plague. He didn’t need to linger any longer that night. While Whisper played defence, Rumour disappeared though Rhaedalyn had no idea what her quieter blue was up to as she pulled Muffin closer and hugged him close to her chest like she always had when he first hatched.
