The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! B’jin had not counted on it being so difficult. Of course, really, he should have realised that with all the time, effort and thought that had gone into finding someone to teach him how to cook, while keeping that fact a secret from R’nd, that finding someone to test his cooking thereafter would be just as difficult and headachy. His first thought, of course, had been to go to Parella. That woman loved food, but therein lay the problem B’jin had quickly realised: she loved food so much, he was hardly sure she’d ever tasted a bite of anything she’d ever eaten. That simply would not do. Besides which, he was quite sure she was incapable of keeping a secret, except when it so suited her. He was not quite willing to bet that this particular secret would be to her ability to keep.

There were several other options thereafter, of course; but B’jin was not quite sure he trusted them. His children had seemed caught somewhere between amusement and terror when B’jin had decided to collect his daughter from the crèche and conned N’mor into joining them. They had both said it was ‘fine’, which B’jin supposed was a great deal better than the previous attempt he had had of cooking for them, after N’mell was removed from their lives. B’jin had sulked for a whole day, while N’mor had rolled his eyes and gone back to his dragonet and Amorandii had resorted to secretive giggling. R’nd’s worried questions that had followed after the children left had been avoided until the bluerider got the hint. B’jin had sulked more, after that.

Now, with the vast majority of the Weyr once more in the North, B’jin found his options were far more limited. He was not quite sure where to go to find someone that could both keep a secret, and would be honest with him. By default, all bronze and brownriders were automatically disqualified. Blueriders were ummed over for a few moments, before B’jin banished them from his list, too. He simply could not risk one of them deciding to rat him out, though B’jin couldn’t see how anything could be gained from that – except playing with a greenrider’s wants – and so he was left with greenriders.

That list caused a lot of umming and ahhing, before B’jin finally settled on N’del; he was not overly well acquainted with his fellow greenrider, but they were not strangers to one another, either.  Deciding upon that, B’jin had not-at-all subtly asked R’nd when his next wing practice was, and genuinely bounced back to his usual self. With N’del in the same wing as R’nd, B’jin settled on preparing a few selected items for the other greenrider to taste, and would seek out the other man while R’nd did his usual post-Wing practice routine.

As a result, the greenrider found himself angling in on N’del as the other left Wing Practice, being sure that R’nd wasn’t in sight, and bounced up to his fellow, smiling brightly. If nothing else good came from being a greenrider, B’jin knew it was that no one ever took much noticed of them. So, still smiling brightly, B’jin leaned forward just enough to murmur his request, expression bright and hopeful. “May I have several moments of your time?” Brown eyes sparkled, and there was the underlying promise to explain what he was up to, when they were not surrounded by bigmouths. B’jin wasn’t willing to bet they were that unremarkable! He did not want R’nd to find out about his surprise, until it was perfectly presented for him!

I'm assuming they'll end up at N'del's rooms; B'jin won't risk his in case R'nd walks in xD

N'del dabbed his face with a sleeve, still a little winded after wing practice. Emeryth gave him a knowing look, but said nothing as the wing dispersed. He could have had his Green fly him back to their quarters, but the walk helped him cool down and prevent muscles from ceasing up. He undid his jacket as he walked, deciding a soak in one of the hot springs was called for. Emeryth's mental prod let him know someone was approaching and he looked up to discover B'jin smiling at him.

He wasn't an overly suspicious man, but B'jin had the look of someone looking to ask for a favor. N'del didn't know the other Greenrider very well, they seemed to run in different circles, meaning B'jin ran in them while N'del did not. He found himself nodding agreeable in response to the younger man's request, half out of curiosity and half because he'd never been very good at refusing others. "Yes of course." He glanced back toward Emeryth who gave him a who knows sort of look, having no better idea of the reason for B'jin's approach than her rider. Katila's population had shrunk since the return North, mostly just the Queens, weyrlings and R'nya's wings were left along with a those who preferred to stay in the South. It was quite possible he was the only likely candidate still available for whatever B'jin was planning.

Picking up on the fact that B'jin wanted a little more privacy before continue N'del resumed walking, giving B'jin an occasional glance as they moved away from the rest of the wing. He couldn't fathom what the other man could want with him. B'jin did appear excited about whatever it was he was planning, N'del just hoped he wouldn't regret getting involved. Don't be such a grump. A little excitement would do you good. He ignored his Green, giving B'jin an expectant look now that they were out of earshot of everyone else. He didn't believe the man was devious enough to get him into trouble, though it could happen by accident. B'jin did seem a bit prone to such things.

B’jin tried to keep his energetic bouncing to a minimum as N’del agreed to spare him a few moments; the greenrider was ecstatic! This would be perfect! N’del was a good and proper man and B’jin was almost positive he could be trusted to be honest about how good – or more probably, bad – B’jin’s cooking was and whether or not it was fit for his lover to consume. When N’del finally gave him that look, B’jin took another look around, before returning his attention to his fellow greenrider.

“I need your help,” B’jin began, leaning forward conspiringly as he murmured the words; loud enough to be heard by N’del but definitely not loud enough to be heard by anyone that might be passing by. He was not going to risk anyone getting the upper hand on this! “I’ve been getting some cooking lessons,” he didn’t say who from, fearing that even that bit of extra material could fall into the wrong hands via the wrong ears and B’jin still didn’t trust firelizards as far as he could punt the little shits, even if he was now bonded to one of his own.

Naturally, that thought called forth the little golden queen, who winked out of between above the two men’s heads with a cool breeze, before swirling to land delicately on B’jin’s right shoulder, her tail snaking gently around his neck once in a loose gold circlet. B’jin petted her lightly on the head but paid her no serious mind. “I wondered, if maybe you could taste some of it for me?” Huge brown eyes stared imploringly up at N’del through honeyed lashes as he waited with baited breath for the reply.

N'del mentally braced himself for some bizarre or morally questionable request as B'jin leaned in. The man was practically glowing with energy and excitement over whatever he had planned. It took a moment for the Greenriders words to sink in. Cooking lessons? It wasn't anywhere close to the wild ideas floating around his head in the few minutes that had pasted since B'jin had approached him. N'del smiled, nodding slightly to let the other man know he was following along so far, well sort of, he still felt vaguely confused about what B'jin wanted with him.

The gold lizard that appeared from between offered a few moments interruption as she made herself at home on B'jin's shoulder. N'del's eyes went wide with surprise as B'jin finished his request, his right hand coming up to brush thoughtfully against the stubble on his jaw. It was easy enough to guess the other man was trying to create some special meal for his mate.

N'del could remember planning surprises of his own for D'ken, though maybe none quite so ambitious. He nodded, giving B'jin a reassuring smile. "Of course. I'd love to." He fibbed just a little. If B'jin seemed to be putting a lot of effort into surprising his mate and N'del was happy to play some small part. He just hoped B'jin's cooking was fairly edible. "So where would you like to do the tasting? Someplace private I'm assuming?" They were closing in on the large building that now housed most of Katila's remaining population. He was terrible out of practice at attempting anything remotely sneaking, not that he'd ever been terrible good at it. D'ken had always known when he was up to something, his face had always been far to readable. "Maybe my room? I don't think anyone would bother us there." He offered, and by anyone he was mostly referring to R’nd.

B’jin just barely refrained from clapping his hands when N’del agreed to test out his cooking. Had he been someone more exuberant and confident, B’jin probably would have kissed the man. As he wasn’t, he just drowned his fellow greenrider in a glowing smile of sunlight proportions and swayed a little where he stood, swinging his weight to and fro before frowning suddenly and heavily; the cloud that blocked the sun from view.

“Oh.” B’jin pursed his lips, thinking about where they could go – B’jin had pointedly been avoiding doing anything remotely cooking-like in the room he usually shared with R’nd, and they couldn’t exactly just flounce off to use D’hys’ little kitchen area. B’jin was pretty sure the bluerider in question wouldn’t be very appreciative of that, and B’jin wasn’t particularly interested in serving the bluerider up his greenrider friends for dessert! The bluerider might mind his manners around B’jin (Faranth knew why) but B’jin wasn’t so delusional as to think that quality would expand to include random friends.

So where to go? When N’del answered the unasked question with the offer of his room, B’jin again flashed his friend a blinding smile of pure delight. “Can we? That would be fantastic!” With his brilliant smile still in place, B’jin promised to meet N’del at his room, and quickly made a dash in the opposite direction; he had not brought the things he had prepared in case the other said they were not interested. With interest and agreement established, B’jin made a bit of a mad dash through the Weyr (something that was only ever seen when Larrikith was flying and a tail of blueriders were on his heels).

Retrieving the food, B’jin was quickly back at N’del’s room, and only knocked once before letting himself in. He had been sure he had seen R’nd eyeing him oddly at one point and B’jin really did not want the bluerider’s curiosity or worry to spoil the surprise! He did not think R’nd would figure out where he had gone; and even if R’nd did knock and come in, B’jin could hide under the bed and N’del could offer R’nd one of the treats he had brought! The greenrider was grinning again as he set the little items out on the table.

Three little cupcakes were in the middle – a chocolate, with chocolate frosting; a vanilla with vanilla frosting; and one with redfruit in it that was more along the lines of a muffin. There was a little bowl of mixed fruit salad that, really, B’jin had had less of a hand in ‘cooking’ and more in ‘finding things to cut up’. The last was several strips of Wherry that had been carefully grilled in an herb and spices mix that D’hys had helped B’jin create.

The greenrider stood back and waited patiently.

N'del was beginning to hope B'jin survived his surprise planning without popping from sheer excitement before the actual surprise. B'jin had obviously been planning his surprise for sometime now and N'del had to give him credit for being able to maintain his secrecy with his mate. The other man's wavering smile worried N'del for a moment, but he quickly relaxed again when his offer of the use of his room was accepted. He nodded, a lower watt smile of his own firmly in place.

"I'll ah meet you there." N'del agreed with B'jin's quickly vanishing back. He moved hastily toward his room, maybe not at quite the pace B'jin set, but noticeably faster than his usual stroll. He swung open his room's door, moving toward the discarded pile of clothing. He doubted he had more than a few minutes for tidying and nudged the garments beneath his bed. It wasn't as if B'jin would be going under there. After tugging his blankets into a neater pile he cleared his small table of a wine skin and a few odd bits of harness. It obviously wasn't the room of a neat freak, but now he wasn't going to feel too embarrassed about having B'jin over.

N'del spun around at the knock, moving aside to give B'jin access to the table. The food he'd brought looked and smell good, surprisingly so. He glanced outside his door before swinging it shut. He wasn't quite sure what he'd do if R'nd came poking about, other than attempt to stall him. "Em can you keep an eye out for R'nd?" Yes alright, but you will owe me a bath and oiling later. N'del agreed without protest as he took a seat at the table, it felt a little odd to be having someone serve him a meal in his own room, but he shrugged it off as he examined what B'jin had prepared.

"Looks like you've been working on this for a while." He commented, taking a few moments to admire the sweets, roasted wherry, and fruit salad. Everything looked delicious, but in the end it was taste, not looks that mattered the most. Although he was tempted to start the little cakes first, N'del went the traditional route and sliced off a bite of roasted wherry. He popped the piece into his mouth, feeling rather self conscious with someone watching him eat with such intensity. I was good, not over cooked and still juicy, if maybe a little spicy for his taste, but he had always clung to his less exotic northern tastes, despite the wider variety of spices in the South. He smiled up at B'jin, "Cooked perfectly B'jin, spicier than I am use to, but you probably know R'and's tastes a lot better than I do." N'del followed up the Wherry with a mouthful of salad, nodding his appreciation, he wasn't generally a big fruit eater, but the combination of fruits was nice after the spicy wherry meat. What he was really looking forward to were the deserts and now that he'd tasted the meat and salad it now seemed appropriate to move onto the little cakes B'jin had prepared.

Maintaining as unreadable expression as possible N'del sampled each of the cupcakes. He was enjoying his role as a taste tester and keeping B'jin in a bit of suspense was highly amusing. Finishing with a bite of the fruit laced muffin, he steepled his fingers beneath his chin. "Well B'jin I'm not quite sure how to put this." Oh stop teasing the boy N'del. His Green chided him during a pause. "The cakes were delicious." He said with a smile, holding up one finger to forestall an outburst. "The fruit one was a little dry, but I'm sure a minor adjust to your recipe would fix that."
