S'kef had all at long to stew about the news. B'jin had gone north? He'd gone north and J'ver knew? J'ver knew and didn't say anything? S'kef wouldn't dare assume that his beloved little flower had intentionally withheld such valuable information from him, especially since the poor dear looked so alarmed when he blurted it out.  J'ver was never so careless with true secrets. No, this was likely a little oversight. Those things happened, but little oversights had cost them an awful lot in the past. J'ver would need to be punished.

In a weird way, S'kef welcomed it.  He'd paced in their hut and pondered on it all day long, plotting the things he would do to punish the adorable greenrider, but S'kef knew that when it came down to it, he was most likely to simply lose his temper the moment J'ver came in the door. In addition, S'kef was curious exactly how his greenie was executing his lastest order: find out how  B'jin had worked his magic. S'kef didn't expect the answer today, though his pet was clever enough that S'kef wouldn't be terribly surprised if he did.

No, he didn't expect an answer, but he did expect progress, or at least a plan of attack. S'kef wanted to know all about this little trip, and how he and his followers could make use of it. It was for the betterment of the entire Weyr, and he would not tolerate it being withheld! He'd wring B'jin's neck on his own if he needed to.

Flit let out a call of alarm and raced to S'kef's shoulders. Tyrrisath started to chime in, but he didn't have to. Flit was already supplying S'kef with an image of the returning greenrider. Tyrrisath was content to back off and instead project himself to Rilaleeyth, reassuring her sweetly, for he was certain she would be nervous. Tyrrisath was more than happy to play the role of the strong, stoic brown in times like these. Rila was far too sweet to put up with this shit alone.

S'kef was disgusted by his dragon's attitude and rudely pushed him out of his head. "J'ver!" he shouted, his mind focused solely on the task at hand. "Get your ass in here, now!"

J’ver had spent the day finding out what he could about the event he had all but forgotten until a mistimed announcement at the secret meeting. Thankfully, he remembered the timeframe that it had happened and started from there, finding out what he could about B’jin’s day that led up to the moment he left for the North. That had been tricky since so many of his contacts had horrible minds that didn’t recall minute details so far back but he had started to collect scraps of information. It wouldn’t be enough to sate S’kef, though, and he knew it.

J’ver dreaded, feared, going back to the hut. Only pain awaited him and he wasn’t a fool to believe otherwise. No matter what he brought back to S’kef, there would be pain. The only question was, how much would he receive? The small bit of information he had was barely anything on the grand scheme of things and it wouldn’t save him from the worst of what S’kef could dish out. If he had a proper answer and could explain B’jin’s stunt to the last detail, he’d probably wake up the next day still bruised and sore but he’d still be able to move.

S’kef’s bellowing for him as Rilaleeyth landed close to Tyrrisath was not enticing. There were times they played games where getting yelled at and then whipped was a turn on but this was not one of those times. That was genuine anger the grennrider heard in his mate’s voice and it as genuine fear that had his knees almost buckling beneath him as he slipped from his dragon’s back to the ground. “Take care of her,” he shot a glare at Tyrrisath, studying him for the briefest of moments. The brown could be rather ruthless when he was following S’kef’s orders but he was also rather tender when it came to Rilaleeyth and J’ver knew he wouldn’t have to worry about her too much during what was about to come.

Wordlessly, J’ver entered the hut and made sure the door closed tightly behind him. It wouldn’t do to have someone walk by and see the bloody rage the Weyrleader could enter. Rumours were one thing; reality was another. As soon as he closed the door, J’ver was shrugging out of his tunic. He had just finished creating it two days prior and he had no intention of letting it get ripped or bloodied. “Good evening, Weyrleader,” he said casually, tossing the tunic onto the nearby chair. It didn’t matter what he said or did, the first blow would connect soon and J’ver was doing his best not to seem too afraid. They both knew it was a charade, though.

Always Tyrrisath replied lowly to J'ver, his deep voice smooth and calm in spite of his bonded's rage. Tyrrisath was usually able to keep his own emotions separate from those of his fierce rider, especially in situations like this where he had something to ground his thoughts in himself. Poor Rila. How could Tyrrisath abandon her now, when surely they all knew what was coming? The brown dragon curled himself around his mate, hoping to gently usher her away from the oncoming violence. Tyrrisath would have perhaps tried to stop it, had he any reason to think he might succeed. Such were the way of things.

Inside, S'kef rounded the corner into the living chambers just in time to see J'ver hanging his coat up. The furious brownrider acted without thought, his hand snapping out to snatch a paperweight off of the desk, which he immediately threw at the delicate greenrider at full force. There was just enough control behind the attack to remind himself to aim away from J'ver's face, unwilling to burden either him or his mate with an ugly scar.

"How do you always miss these things, J'ver?!" S'kef demanded, storming across the room right after the throw. He reached out to seize the greenrider by his shoulders and yank him closer. "How?! You're sharding perfect for me so much of the time, and then you miss something like this? You can perfectly handle every tiny, invisible detail of your workings, and then miss something like this? How? How could you overlook something like that?!"

His hand snapped out to strike the greenrider. He just couldn't take it anymore! The rage guided his motions, setting his very blood on fire. He felt that if he had to hold still, he might explode. "You're not stupid and you're not disloyal, so what the fuck are you to screw me over so badly?"

His eyes narrowed and he leaned in closer. "To screw us over so badly, J'ver! Do you want to rot in the gutter again? Because we both could. Do you realize that? Do you really want to drown in the mud with me?!" His voice shook as he spoke. They'd both worked hard, taken risks, and compromised morality to get to where they stood today. Major miscalculations could risk it all, and  S'kef would rather die than see either of them suffer and languish as they had before. Never again, he'd swore it to both of them! Maybe his dear mate just needed a little reminder...

J’ver flinched when the paperweight was grabbed but didn’t dare move when S’kef made a motion to throw it. He knew S’kef’s vanity ran as deep as his own and that he wouldn’t ruin his face unless it was absolutely necessary. Moving meant he risked the chance of stepping into the path instead of away. So he stayed trembling where he stood and let the paperweight connect with decent force on his shoulder. A whimper escaped before he could control his outbursts and J’ver trembled all the more from fear of what his voice would incite S’kef into doing.

It was unclear if S’kef grabbed him by the shoulders with the intention of aggravating the fresh injury from the tossed paperweight or not but it succeeded. J’ver’s knees nearly buckled from the new wave of pain stemming from that tender area but he didn’t dare fall. Not now, not when S’kef was so riled up and looking for answers. Any further weakness that was shown would be his downfall and J’ver was stronger than that! He could manipulate any situation and turn it to his favour so why couldn’t he do that with S’kef right then? The pain, he decided, and the fear. Both were too fresh and it had been a while since either had truly developed in him while in the presence of his brownrider.

“It… it wasn’t the focus of the current mission. We needed B’jin’s assistance in securing your position. That was the important thing.” While it was the truth, J’ver knew it was still a weak response. He had always operated on the belief that any detail was an important one even if it wasn’t needed right away. Everything always had a price and could be brought back to the forefront of minds easily later on. He had no idea how he overlooked such an important detail when in truth, it had been a major detail in getting B’jin to cooperate. ‘I know you snuck North without permission, so help me acquire dirt on bronzeriders.’ Why hadn’t he made the connection then?

“I was focused on your well-being. Your… your rise back into power. It was…” J’ver wanted to close his eyes and pretend everything was fine. If he closed his eyes, the pain would go away and S’kef wouldn’t be grabbing him and about to beat him bloody. He wasn’t a fool despite the accusations against him and J’ver kept his eyes open and his gaze on S’kef. “The most important thing.”

S’kef’s question of what J’ver was kept ringing in his ears and while it was likely rhetorical, J’ver found himself answering it anyway. “I’m a greenrider, sir.” No one ever held them up to any sort of standards so why did S’kef think his pet greenrider could carry out anything perfectly without a hitch?

"A greenrider?" S'kef sneered incredulously. He snatched at J'ver's shoulders and moved to smash the greenrider's back into the door. Why not? It was easy, and it gave him not only a sense of power, but a sense of control. He clung tightly to the smaller man's shoulders, daring not release him, otherwise the fool might screw something else up or worse, try to escape. There would be no escape, not while S'kef lived and breathed! J'ver belonged to him, and so long as they were together, one mistake belonged to both of them.

"You're my greenrider...The finest greenrider on the whole sharding planet, you fool!" S'kef snarled, jerking J'ver forward and slamming him back a second time. "You are mine! We're in this together, and I wouldn't have sharding chosen you over all the other shit in this Weyr if I didn't expect better of you! You're not the same sort of garbage as the rest of them, J'ver! You're special, and you're mine!" The words may have sounded sweet, were they not snarled from behind gritted teeth. S'kef's eyes were narrowed and clouded with outrage and a hint of desperate love. He loved J'ver, but what could he do? What could he do when his sweet greenrider wavered so? Surely he only needed a strong hand to guide him! Surely he only needed proper instruction! He was a greenrider, clever and competent though he may be...

S'kef snarled again and channeled all of his anger into a vicious shove, attempting to toss J'ver to the floor and follow up with a kick to his ribs. The brownrider let out a shout of frustration. "Keep your damn head in the game next time, J'ver!" he barked, stalking closer before kneeling down and reaching out to catch J'ver by the nape of his neck. The greenrider was so adorable and attractive when eh trembled and cowered, and yet tried so hard to wear a brave face. Sometimes, it was hard for S'kef to decide between punishing and cuddling him, but it wouldn't do to spoil the brat. J'ver needed to remember where he stood, right?

S'kef leaned down to whisper in J'ver's ear. "Jai...what am I going to do with you?"

J’ver didn’t scream or even grunt when the kick to his ribs came. It hurt but the wind had been knocked out of him from the shoves against the wall and to the ground and a boot to the chest certainly didn’t change any of that. He tried to gasp as one hand bravely inched towards his ribs in the belief that it not only would help ease the pain if he could touch them but that it would even be allowed. When the nape of his neck was grabbed, J’ver froze, believing that was the answer to what he was doing and gave up on checking the damage or easing any pain.

Not like the pain would let up that night even if he had a healing touch.

While he was most certainly afraid for his life right then, J’ver still had the time to form a rebuttal in his defence for what he had – or hadn’t – done. It wouldn’t have changed anything if he informed on B’jin right away. D’ren would still have to lose some of his power and hold over the population and Tsuen would have to continue her descent into madness. Of course all that waiting also meant more time for them to fine tune plans and prepare but in the end, they would still be at the same point as they were right then. None of that was said to S’kef, though. It wouldn’t have been heard even if J’ver believed he could speak clearly in the moment.

“You will do,” he wheezed on the simple word and took a painful deep breath in an attempt to relieve the burning sensation in his lungs, “with me whatever you please, as you always do.” There would be plenty more beatings to come, he was confident in that but at the end of it all, S’kef would tend to him. J’ver knew their routine well and while he would learn from his mistakes as he always did, he also knew that being beaten up was the best thing to come of S’kef’s anger. If the brownrider was truly mad then he would walk away and never return. J’ver would not become a simple greenrider anymore but a rejected greenrider that even the likes of B’jin and Ravana would look down on.

That was truly a fate worse than what he was currently stuck in the middle of, though Rilaleeyth’s whimpering and anguished cries – the latter of which only audible in J’ver’s mind – clearly pointed out her differing views on the matter. J’ver could only hope Tyrrisath continued to uphold his end of the promise and keep the precious green safe and calm. J’ver was normally much better at blocking her but his mind was slightly uncontrolled from the events he had set into motion and the abuse he was receiving. Although he supposed he was still doing a wonderful job considering Rilaleeyth wasn’t doing much more than whimper and tremble.

S'kef shuddered. "J'ver," he hissed wickedly, his voice trembling with force and adoration.  He tightened his grip on the greenrider's collar and slowly rose to his feet, seeking to drag J'ver with him. The weak creature's voice was so faint and his body so frail...surely he would need help standing on those thin legs of his.  S'kef set his jaw and snorted with disdain, giving his companion a shove in the direction of the bedroom.

"Shameful," he scolded, following slowly, unyielding eyes locking on the back of J'ver's head, outwardly daring him to resist and silently begging him not to. He stalked after, fists tight and breath shallow as he tried to get a handle on his anger. How close they always lingered to oblivion! Perhaps the brownrider was too paranoid, remembering the days of vulnerability all too well! He could still recall how often they flirted with near-certain failure and misery!

As he followed into their room ad pulled the door closed, he found a new thought wandering into his mind. In his daze of anger, he almost didn't realize that it was not his own. Since when has caution suited you?

Outside, Tyrrisath wound himself around Rilaleeyth, purring gently in an effort to soothe her. He silently shushed her, red eyes fluttering with the occasional specs of affectionate blue.  He pressed his snout to hers and slowly slipped his tongue forward, like a lover trying to wipe away their companion's tears. You are not cautious. You are clever.  There is a difference.

Tyrrisath sounded so disgusted with the paranoia. S'kef recoiled visibly and wrinkled his nose. He was pretty disgusted, too.

"Stay still," he barked, suddenly snapping his head towards J'ver and stalking over. He lifted his hands to caress the greenrider's cheeks as he pushed him back towards the bed, aiming to sit him down on the edge and examine his face to make sure he wasn't too badly hurt. The brownrider's grip remained uncomfortably firm, but it was now attentive. His expression twisted with disdain.

"....We are not so weak as we once were," he reasoned aloud, his words coming as a growl. "...Perhaps we can afford minor mistakes like this, so long as we don't let them influence our future."

A tentative apology. Sort of.

He leaned forward and kissed J'ver's cheek lightly. "I will always love you," he assured J'ver with grim finality. They were damned to one another. Yes, S'kef could simply walk away, as J'ver feared. He'd done it once before. Not long after, he came crawling back. He crawled back like a beggar crawled before a lord, only to tell J'ver that if he wished to leave, it must happen presently, for he would never get another chance. S'kef would never let him leave, just as he could never leave J'ver.
