B’jin had never been particularly against birthdays, and had even looked forward to them for most of his life. As a youngster, each passing year had brought him closer to first his assumed mastership, and then an end to his Weyrlinghood days when Larrikith had joined in the rollercoaster that was his life, and then they were just birthdays for a while. Sometimes they were indications of how much time had passed between other events, such as the Plague, but mostly they were meaningless to B’jin.

Then he had realised, with horror, that the turn before he had celebrated – well, that was being generous – his forty-ninth birthday by curling up quietly on the hut roof with Larrikith and watching the stars in the clear sky above. The greenrider wasn’t entirely sure who did and did not know when his birthday was, but he had been pleased to pass that day in relative silence. Wing practice had been the day before, if he recalled correctly, and he had been thankful; R’nya hadn’t been the type to work them days on end which meant he’d had the day to himself. Luckier than R’nd, who had been fretting about Wingpractice a few days later on what B’jin had learned was Kerrin’s birthday. Well. He was still Kerrin then, he’d celebrate his first birthday as K’rin in a few days.

Realising he had turned forty-nine had been more than a little terrifying. When had he gotten so old? Then, as that thought slowly wandered away, he had been hit by one even more terrifying: the following year he would be fifty. B’jin didn’t want to be fifty! He didn’t care that bonding to Larrikith had kept him many years younger in appearance than if he had become the Masterharper he had dreamed of becoming. He didn’t care that if not for Larrikith, he’d probably be on his deathbed, because he’d be fat and lazy and playing music all the time. All he cared about was the fact that he was steadily approaching fifty, and that was terrifying.

Larrikith, who had kindly reminded him that R’nd was still in his twenties, had been highly amused when her rider had visibly warred with a panic attack. What would he do, when R’nd realised how awfully old he was, and found someone closer to his age? B’jin was ridiculously fond of the bluerider (Larrikith laughed quietly at the way B’jin shied away from the word ‘love’. The one time he’d uttered it had frightened him in retrospect, and he was terrified of saying it again and R’nd actually running away instead of nearly dying on the couch.) and he really didn’t want to lose him just because he was old. He didn’t actually look old, right? That was what was important!

Not the fact that B’jin had enough turns sitting on him to easily be his lover’s father. That was a thought Larrikith had a great deal of fun pointing out to her distressed rider, and she laughed softly when he groaned in horror. He did not need that beoing pointed out to him, and he certainly didn’t want R’nd thinking it, ever that was – B’jin’s nose scrunched up dramatically and he dipped under the bathwater to scrub his hair clean of suds. It was getting quite long, falling almost to his shoulder blades.

As a Harper, B’jin had always kept his hair lengthy, often around shoulder length and pulled back classily. After Impressing Larrikith, his Weyrlingmaster had made a point of making him shave it off, and B’jin had spent since then with very short hair, often styled into messy spikes with lavender scented was, and usually made the same time he made oil for Larrikith’s hide. When R’nd had made a quiet comment about liking the longer hair, B’jin had decided to let it grow out a little for his lover’s enjoyment. He had assumed R’nd would let him know when it was at a length the bluerider preferred, and as such had not done more than get it trimmed occasionally by Par’a when it was getting scraggly – something she usually told him was happening. He was probably due for another trim. Maybe he’d let her take off a few extra inches of the dark honeyed locks this time.

Leaving the tub, B’jin shook his hair out and wrapped himself in a towel, frowning mildly at his reflection in one of the small mirrors set up in the bathing room he occupied. Teaching weyrlings was treating him much kinder than being a weyrling had, or even a wingrider. He wasn’t forced to undergo exercise any more, but tended to join his Weyrlings when they were doing their required jogs, mostly as an excuse to spend some extra time with Talian – T’lain – even if neither of them did a whole lot of talking in those moments. The boy was just as sour about being a Weyrling as B’jin had been, but at least he was quiet about it. B’jin had been very vocal, and it hadn’t ever turned out well for him.

B’jin had never been particularly buff, despite the fact that his body shape would have allowed for it if he had been so inclined. But he supposed he could have done a lot worse, considering his new age. He still looked to be in his early thirties, and his limbs were toned and clean, his stomach flat, and all of him home to a little more than just a hint of muscle definition. He didn’t have anything worth flaunting, especially with some of the blueriders that were running around, but he certainly wasn’t some sticky little pansy either. That was fairly important to B’jin who, despite his turns in same-sex relationships, had issues with the whole concept when he took the time to pause and think about it. Hold and Hall opinions had never been very kind, and B’jin had been raised a narrow-minded and arrogant type.

His nose scrunched, and he threw the thought out of his mind, wondering absently why he was analysing his (lack of) relationship or his body which he’d been stuck with for fifty turns before he heard Larrikith’s voice slide like silk into the forefront of his brain, and B’jin paused as a shiver trembled down his spine. Happy birthday, love. Larrikith purred, and B’jin’s eyebrows drew together. Thank you, Larrikith. There was a small pause, and then the same sultry tones were whispering into his internal ear, I love you, Benjinamor.

B’jin was frowning now, one hand rising to sweep damp blonde hair out of his face, drops of water flying at the action, while others were running down his back. “I love you too, dear,” he murmured aloud, the frown now one of confusion. Why was Larrikith telling him she loved him? She very rarely spoke to him like that, and he hadn’t heard her speak in that tone of voice for quite some time… He couldn’t rightly remember the last time she’d sounded like that. She was quite obviously up to something, but B’jin couldn’t figure out what that could be.

I have a gift for you, B’jin, she was still purring softly in his ear, but he could feel the warmth of the early morning sunlight on her mossy hide as she shifted on the rooftop where she’d been soaking in the light while B’jin had been soaking in the warm water below. Goosebumps rose along his arms, the hairs standing on end in sudden anticipation. B’jin blinked. “You do?” What in Faranth’s name could his dragon possibly give him for his birthday? She’d never treated his birthday any differently than any other day before, and they’d been together for almost thirty turns now.

His head tilted slightly when she simply purred softly, the rumbling sound strong in his own chest, despite the physical distance that was between them. B’jin walked blindly to the bathroom door, and unlocked it, but he didn’t go out. You need to feel special, she whispered, soft and sweet, to feel loved. B’jin frowned again, “but I am loved?” He was confused, but his voice was vague and accepting; he still hadn’t quite caught on to what was happening and was rapidly losing the function to figure it out. You are, Larrikith agreed gently, mind reaching out to touch against Ayyonth.

No other would fly her, not this day. It wouldn’t be a contest, or a game. It was a gift to B’jin, and she knew of only one pair that was capable of making what she envisioned true. Her silly rider needed to stop fussing about such ridiculous notions like being too old, or R’nd not wanting him anymore. So, she would give him R’nd for his birthday, and she would make it his best flight in available memory.

Too slow.

“For what?” R’nd was still confused as he stumbled out of his bedroom with a yawn after his dragon told him to get a move on as they had plans to attend to. He wouldn’t say what, which of course made for a curious bluerider but R’nd got out of bed and even tossed some clothes on all the same. He wasn’t sure what the dragon wanted but it seemed like new plans had been made for his morning. Originally R’nd had decided to curl up on his couch to read some of Valerian’s notes he had been taking since arriving at Katila as homework. The weyrling had agreed to help him improve his reading and writing skills in secret and didn’t even ask why it was desired though R’nd suspected the brat already knew. He wasn’t going to be an embarrassment to B’jin though! How could such a brilliant and established Harper be seen so regularly with a man that had proper schooling up to a certain age in between learning to bait hooks and be a carefree third child before spending turns in the middle of nowhere without touching a pen or paper? B’jin was proud and with every reason given the skills he could boast so it was a wonder he hadn’t kicked the pathetic bluerider aside a long time ago.

Besides, even the simple idea about studying that morning was a good way to keep his mind off of birthdays and the fact that he still wasn’t quite sure what to do for B’jin; aside from upping the reading skills but the greenrider still didn’t need to know about that. Since Amorandii had whispered in his ear about when her daddy’s birthday was, R’nd had been panicking that he wouldn’t be able to do anything special. He had been curious for so long about when the actual day was and wanted to celebrate! Now that he knew, R’nd also knew B’jin wouldn’t want a large party, they both knew R’nd cooking for a surprise would land them in Healing Hall’s beds instead of their own, and R’nd had no confidence in his artistic skills to make B’jin something. Even with that lack of confidence, R’nd finally did secure some paints and did exactly what B’jin said he should do when asked about what he would want as a drawing during one of their ‘what if’ games. B’jin had said he wouldn’t want anything in particular but something that was special to R’nd. It was horribly done but it was something at least. Still, he wanted to do more! B’jin deserved so much more!

R’nd peeked out the kitchen window and laughed when Ayyonth peered in from the other side. And wear something nice. No wait, don’t. What you have on is fine. Now he was extremely curious! R’nd didn’t put up a fight, especially not when he stopped for a moment to pay attention to the feelings rolling off his dragon. They were familiar and a brow quirked in question at the head still peering in at him. No further explanation was given but R’nd nodded and made his way outside. Boots were ignored since they wouldn’t be on for long anyway with the lust he felt from Ayyonth and his own building. It was obviously a flight that the blue wanted to enter but R’nd wasn’t sure who it was. They had cut back on their chasing significantly once a bond seemed to have formed between Larrikith and Ayyonth but the blue still had needs and he was allowed a random chance here and there, especially if Larrikith was flown by another; like Veeth, the annoying yet oh-so cute young blue.

“So who’s the lucky rider?” R’nd asked as they glided over the weyr from hut to wherever Ayyonth decided to dump him before chasing his green friend. There were only a very few greenriders that would worry R’nd if he woke beside but for the most part he was always pleased to be with anyone. You. Well that was rather unexpected and left R’nd baffled for the remainder of the trip! He boggled a bit ore before Ayyonth was finally ushering him off his back and nudging his silly human inside the bathhouse. Only when Ayyonth took off again with the waves of affection rolling off him did R’nd fully clue in.

Larrikith was about to fly!

Completely excited and now relieved that he wasn’t going to fly with someone other than his not-mate on B’jin’s birthday, R’nd practically skipped inside the bathing house, loving the head start he had been given. One room and then another were given a quick inspection of and finally the right room was found as he opened the door and nearly collided with B’jin standing immediately on the other side. “Hi,” he greeted softly with a large smile that was still completely R’nd and not the feral grin that took over during flightlust. It was soon in coming but for the moment, all expressions were genuine and emotions were purely R’nd with a dash of Ayyonth.

The door opened, and B’jin blinked, taking more than a few moments to comprehend that someone was standing on the other side. As brown eyes cleared a little, a small smile flickered over the corner of B’jin’s lips as his gaze focused on the bright eyes of his lover. “You’re late,” he purred softly, gentle fingers reaching out to linger lightly on R’nd’s hips. A coy smile, lashes lowering as B’jin inched forward, wet hair still dripping on his bare shoulders. “Bath time is finished.” His hands lowered slightly, picking subtly at the hem of R’nd’s pants.

Above them, the roof creaked softly as Larrikith shifted her weight, crooning a gentle welcome to Ayyonth before lifting into the air, wings beating strongly as she pushed off from the roof and into the sky. Her actions were slow and deliberate, her movement carefully structured as she made her way up higher, eyes swirling a warm and affectionate shade brightened hotly with lust as she crooned teasingly to Ayyonth, sultry and inviting. The green didn’t vocalise her flight; it wasn’t for anyone else and while some heads rose to watch, Larrikith was satisfied when not one dragon wing twitched; the flight was already won, so why waste the energy? Ayyonth was given a smug look, before Larrikith vanished into the cloud cover.

“Pretty blueriders shouldn’t wear so many clothes,” B’jin mumbled, words mostly lost in the crook of R’nd’s neck as lingering lips left soft kisses and teasing nibbles while nimble fingers flicked buttons undone. The greenrider hummed in the back of his throat as the shirt was finally pushed away. Skin..! Above them, swirling through the sky, Larrikith dipped close to Ayyonth, wingtips brushing and she flew over the top of the blue, rumbling in soft amusement as her own movements echoed B’jin’s, touch light as her paws passed over Ayyonth before she twirled away again with a sultry trill, heading higher once more.

The shirt fluttered to the floor, and B’jin’s hands trailed after it, lowering once more to the hem of R’nd’s pants before pausing teasingly. Where did all this material come from? “Close the door.” The words were whispered silkily as the greenrider stepped backwards teasingly and his hands left where they had been toying playfully with the laces of R’nd’s pants. Brown eyes were lost to dragon lust, but the warm, playful nature of Larrikith’s flight was affecting B’jin just as solidly; she was still gaining altitude, her flight lazy and teasing as she drew Ayyonth upward, beyond pleased. Her entire attitude was a heavy mixture of deep affection for the blue dragon chasing just as pleasantly, and lusty desires.

When the bluerider had done as asked, and approached him, B’jin’s arms were welcoming as they snaked around his neck, drawing himself flush against his lover. Leaning up, B’jin claimed a lingering kiss, drawing back just barely when breathing once more seemed like a vaguely good idea. Brown eyes were dark with lust, but warm with affection. “I love you,” the whispered words were given softly on a gentle breath as Larrikith gently gave herself over to Ayyonth with a croon; they were high, and the flight would be long. As it should be.

“I’m glad,” R’nd whispered in response to the repeated love confession seconds before Ayyonth caught up with Larrikith to end the chase. He might still have issues comprehending the words and certainly hadn’t reached a level where he could say them himself but it was a major step to acknowledge that he had not only heard B’jin whisper his love but that he was happy to have it. In a clearer state of mind the bluerider knew how confusing he could be with his contradictions in how he felt and how he wanted others to feel for him. He needed people to like him, be friends with him, even love him, but at the same time, R’nd never wanted anyone to get too close to him and he panicked when there was love or even strong lust. He knew how he was and knew that while he craved that attention, there was a strong chance he would hurt someone with his flighty and flirty ways.

Not that day, however. Not there in the bathhouse with B’jin pressed tight to him in that odd way that made it seem like they were meant for such positions, their hands wandering over each other’s bodies that they knew so perfectly. R’nd was completely comfortable in how things were with the greenrider that had won him over in every way so as to push doubts and fears aside; most of the time. R’nd still had his fears that one day he would hurt B’jin without meaning to but it hadn’t happened yet and he was intent on keeping it that way, just as he was intent on telling his not-mate truths that B’jin never seemed to believe or had been told before. “My gorgeous greenrider. Only you, love.”

As they tumbled to the floor, R’nd gave a soft laugh and his last sober thought before losing himself to the flight lust was that he really was a romantic sap.

As R’nd came to, his fingers twitched and he frowned at the hard surface beneath them. His bed was typically far softer and more comfortable than the current location which a stiff neck he tried to move indicated. The only familiar sensation to his groggy mind was the warm body draped partially on him. There was once a time where that was normal but R’nd didn’t always know who the body belonged to without visual confirmation but now was different. He recognized the way B’jin rested his head on his chest, the way blonde hair liked to find its way over his nose to make him struggle against a sneeze, and the man’s weight.

“Ah, the bathhouse,” R’nd finally clued in to the location when he heard water rippling against something – which ended up being Rell splashing around in the tub as he entertained himself while everyone was busy. He really shouldn’t have been surprised. He was pretty sure Larrikith purposely waited for B’jin to be in a certain location before she took to the sky but he didn’t mind. It was somewhat fun having a list of unconventional locations for flights with B’jin. Dining Hall, classroom, lake, and now the bathhouse. The greenrider no doubt hated it but R’nd saw the amusement in it and went along with it.

Actually, this was probably the most convenient flight yet. They only had to roll into the tub to clean up – and likely play a bit before, during, and after – instead of dressing and stumbling to the nearest open room. R’nd was growing rather fond of the current situation but he didn’t make any further comment as he wasn’t sure if B’jin was awake or in the mood to move from where he was snuggled. R’nd wasn’t sure if he actually was either as he draped an arm around B’jin for what could be considered as a lazy hug.

B’jin sighed softly, breath rushing across R’nd’s chest at the soft mumble of his lover’s voice. He was less than ideally comfortable, but the niggling irritation of the hard surface digging into what parts of his body were on the floor instead of sprawled on top of R’nd wasn’t quite enough to rouse the greenrider from the lazy doze he’d fallen into. The arm draped lazily around him caused B’jin to stir, and he snuggled closer with another soft puff of breath, eyes fluttering open lazily.

“Whore dragon,” B’jin mumbled softly, barely above a whisper, and there was far more tolerant amusement in his tone than anger or irritation. B’jin shifted around slightly, folding one of his arms across R’nd’s chest and resting his chin on his hand; he was careful not to upset the tentative grip the bluerider had on him and a playful and slightly lopsided smile pulled the corners of his lips up. “Good morning, love!” Again with the soft voice, for it was still much too early to be speaking loudly – and R’nd didn’t like it when he was overly cheerful in the early hours. He knew, because it was really the only time he made R’nd frown like that and R’nd had never said anything, but B’jin didn’t want to be the cause of premature frown wrinkles!

“You’re up early,” B’jin teased gently, eyes sparkling as he leaned in to place a light kiss on R’nd’s lips, humming placidly as he relaxed against his lover, pointedly ignoring the firelizard splashing in the water. It was that or drown the little terror, and B’jin was quite sure R’nd wouldn’t look favourably on such behaviour. He seemed at least slightly attached to the silly pet, and B’jin was willing to ignore it all the while it couldn’t’ see more than his arse. He’d really rather it not see anything, but he was willing to compromise.

Larrikith rolled her eyes mentally as she snuggeld closer to Ayyonth, giving his cheek a nudge and then an affectionate lick as she rumbled softly with pleasure. Good morning, she purred softly.

“I had a good reason to be,” R’nd smiled at the light teasing. B’jin’s flights had always been a top priority for him once Ayyonth urged him to stop worrying over them and give chase. It had been the only available option of interaction for him since his out-going and flirtatious personality came to a stuttering halt whenever he was around B’jin otherwise. Since their first win together, everything had changed. It really was more the day he found the courage to talk to B’jin in the Square that changed everything and R’nd was eternally thankful for that day, but it didn’t change his desire to be the greenrider’s flight partner. He never remembered much of the flights themselves but the intense joy he had at waking up beside B’jin was the same now as it had been the first time. It was nice having that and even better to see the pleasure in brown eyes when B’jin saw him. “Until you say not to, I’ll always give chase.”

Rell splashed a bit louder as he struggled his way out of the water and then shook off. R’nd felt a couple of drops hit his shoulder but made no comment on it as he poked B’jin’s nose. When his firelizard decided a good towel and bed was his discarded shirt, however, R’nd frowned at the blue when he looked over to see what Rell was up to. “He’s such a little pest,” but a pest R’nd couldn’t fully hate even with all of the drama he had caused. How could he hate something that was like a mini-Ayyonth with the colouring his hide now had? It was completely unfair!

“I heard something interesting from an adorable young lady that I know the other day,” R’nd continued talking, deciding ignoring that little pest was the best thing right then. He’d lose his nerve to say anything soon if he didn’t act right then. It was odd, really, since he loved to spoil his friends and celebrate important days to them but he never liked his own birthday to be public knowledge since while he loved attention and being spoiled, R’nd didn’t want it to be a big deal or cause drama. The way some of his female past lovers bickered over him made him believe a birthday would be dangerous.

Carefully he rolled them over, cradling B’jin’s head so it wouldn’t hit the floor in the move. Leaning on his side, R’nd brushed away B’jin’s bangs and continued to toy with the soft and long blonde locks, almost purposely delaying finishing his thought. He still had the nerve to say it now but he was in a playful mood and could only imagine what B’jin was coming up with in regards to what had been heard and who the woman was. It was probably mean of him but he would end it soon, as his warm smile showed. “I’ve missed all the others, slightly because I worried over asking and slightly because of how private you are but… happy birthday, love.”

Ayyonth rumbled his pleasure at the greeting Larrikith gave him and was soon returning it with a lick to her cheek. Good morning, my lady. He still hadn’t grown out of using the terms R’nd favoured when talking with women but he liked it especially for Larrikith. She certainly wasn’t a well-behaved princess by any stretch of the imagination but Ayyonth loved her attitude and playfulness and that made her the lady of his heart all the same. He paused in further greeting Larrikith as he tilted his head, listening in on R’nd’s usual thought process when it came to saying something important to B’jin. When his silly human finally spit it out, Ayyonth chuckled. Yet again we’ve done well for those two. We should teach a class for dragons that have hopeless riders in need of assistance with their love lives. It would be a huge success.

“Good,” B’jin said gently, a light smile on his lips as he watched R’nd’s face with curiosity. All else aside, the bluerider was by far one of B’jin’s favoured flight partners. He wasn’t… obnoxious, and while such attitudes could certainly fill a void once in a while, B’jin had found waking up without unnecessary bumps and bruises to be a good thing. It was nice to be able to actively walk after a flight, to not have broken bones or bruises that were simply extreme and unneeded. There was still a twisted thrill to being caught by someone who took too much enjoyment in causing lingering evidence, but there was the warmth in his belly and the delight at seeing R’nd’s face when he opened his eyes that outweighed the thrill of danger. Hopefully it always will.

B’jin gave a light snort of amusement at R’nd, shifting slightly to watch where the little blue vanished to and then turned back to R’nd. The floor really wasn’t all that comfortable; one would think after so many turns of unexpected flights, the Weyr would cater more to poor greenrider bodies! Perhaps a greenrider revolt was in order, so blueriders ended up the ones with bruises; then they’d get softer floors! A smile twitched at B’jin’s lips before R’nd was speaking again and a slight frown replaced it. A flicker of something that might have just barely been more irritation than jealousy lit up B’jin’s eyes for a second as his lips pursed thoughtfully.

“Oh?” his voice was confused as he allowed R’nd to adjust their positions, watching the bluerider with a combination of worry and suspicion as he idled on continuing. The greenrider had no idea where his friend was going with that introduction to whatever the topic change was, and his imagination was far too active not to shoot off in about a million different directions – all of them quite negative. Eyebrows knit together more as R’nd continued – all the other what’s? – before he blinked several times as the simple conclusion took a moment to process. Then;

“Wait. All?” A disgruntled expression formed on the greenrider’s face as he sulked. Just because he’d had a lot of birthdays didn’t mean R’nd had to go and point it out! Most of them had been missed because he hadn’t even been born yet (and that was an incredibly distasteful thought!) and then more again because he was a child, and then there was the Plague and how long had Katila been around for now? Another ten or so turns? So, he’d only missed about ten birthdays! That wasn’t worthy of an ‘all’, was it? Faranth, was he really that old?

As B’jin’s expression changed from sulky to distressed, Larrikith sighed as she leaned lazily against Ayyonth with a mental eyeroll. You spoke too soon, she mumbled, amusement quite clear as she poked at B’jin’s mind. I do believe B’jin needs to learn how to relax, the last word melding into her rider’s mind and making him jump slightly with surprise. Larrikith snorted in amusement.

Has R’nd ever insulted you, love? She didn’t even really wait for an answer, the question mostly rhetorical, but B’jin’s expression altered to be more shameful than upset as her words sunk in. I didn’t think so. How about we thank the nice man for his well wishes with some nice kisses? Her words were shared with Ayyonth, the patronising tone not going unnoticed by B’jin though he opted not to retort. R’nd was kept carefully in the dark for the moment; there were dragons aplenty to step in before he managed to dump her rider on the miserable bathroom floor.

She could still feel the tenseness in B’jin as he curled closer to R’nd, the greenrider not completely convinced there wasn’t some underlying intent in the gently spoken words, but she was pleased none the less when he offered a sincere thank you for the happy birthday, his voice lost somewhere between shy, worried, and quietly pleased. While he was still thinking too much on how the words had been delivered, he was none the less quite pleased R’nd knew it was his birthday (hopefully without the numbers involved!) and he offered a gentle, apologetic kiss. “Thank you.”

It would be a great deal of fun, too, Larrikith added, her amusement not the slightest bit dulled by the time passage between Ayyonth’s original statement and her chance to respond to it. All the panicking riders, and the desperate dragons. While she couldn’t exactly grin, the emotion was thick on her voice. Humans were so ridiculous! At least they are entertaining in their ridiculousness. It was important to be entertained, while the brain was bleeding from their words, actions and over thinking!

He shouldn’t have said anything! He knew he shouldn’t! Yet he had opened his mouth and said something. The sulking expression that seemed horrified and upset tore at R’nd and made for a dull ache in his chest that had his hand resting over his heart, trying to stop it. He had messed up and there was no way to undo it or correct it. Words had landed him in trouble so there wasn’t any way he could use words to get himself out of it. Likely, he’d only make it worse. “I told Amorandii this was a bad idea,” he mumbled as his gaze lowered to his hand that slipped from his chest to rest between them. Perhaps only an apology before dressing and leaving was the right course of action? It’s not and you know that. Think about all of the words you said and you may find the cause of distress.

R’nd frowned as he went back over what he said, or what he thought he had said. Was it the teasing he had done over only saying he spoke with a young lady instead of saying it was B’jin’s chatty daughter? Maybe it was simply pointing out he had been a horrible friend by missing birthdays before this one, reminding B’jin of his mistakes? No, it was the way he worded that line. B’jin was older than him, they both knew that, the entire Weyr knew that though the bluerider hadn’t ever sat down to figure out the math to give him B’jin’s age or the gap between them. R’nd had accidentally pointed that out though and made it sound like he missed every single birthday in his lover’s life because of the age difference. He was such a fool!

A forgiven fool, though? R’nd blinked in surprise as the kiss was given with soft words of thanks. R’nd couldn’t hold back the smile that emerged from the gesture. He was completely relieved that he wasn’t in trouble or about to be shut out of B’jin’s life again for his stupidity. “I wanted to celebrate more birthdays with you but I didn’t think you would want that,” R’nd tried to explain without scaring B’jin by confessing the crush he had on the man for so long. It didn’t click in that his crush was akin to B’jin’s confession of loving him and that it would be a welcomed thing to say. Stop talking and just kiss him. You know you aren’t the smartest kid in the class after a flight. Your flighty brain is far too addled for more than small talk and kisses. R’nd shooed Ayyonth away but took his advice all the same as he leaned in to apologise with a proper kiss.

Entertaining but sometimes tiring as well, my beautiful companion. Ayyonth was ready to hit his head on a wall if R’nd tried to explain himself again but was glad that his human decided to follow the perfect advice of kissing. He often encouraged R’nd to share what he was feeling but after a flight he was a bit of a mental mess. Then again, it was likely the best time to get him to say the right things with enough prodding, Ayyonth decided as he picked through old memories of waking up beside B’jin after flights. He still enjoyed seeing R’nd’s reactions to the first win. Such an adorable and confused boy he had been! With these two as our examples for how wonderful our work is, we’d never lack in willing participants! He teased them but he really did love their oblivious humans.

B’jin didn’t answer R’nd’s light explanation, the greenrider busy telling Larrikith to remind him to murder Indamor when he next housed the brat. While it was clearly Amorandii that had blabbed about the event of her father’s birthday to R’nd, B’jin knew just as doubtlessly that it was Indamor that had set up the careful exchange of knowledge. The child would be a brownrider in the making for sure!

The internal rant was brought to a screeching halt – much to Larrikith’s amusement – by warm lips claiming his own. A smile curved his own lips, and B’jin hummed in approval as he hooked one arm around R’nd’s neck, the other hand wandering down the length of his lover’s body. Post-flight hook-ups had never been something B’jin enjoyed, and especially never something he had encouraged. Flights were nasty, objectifying and N’mall had always been so jealous – a moment after Larrikith had landed herself lightly on the ground, and B’jin was expected to be removing himself from whatever location he had ended up in.

B’jin broke the kiss suddenly, leaning back a little and the arm looped around R’nd’s neck withdrew, and his hand pressed with firm gentleness against his lover’s chest as B’jin frowned at him, eyebrows drawn together seriously. “Always catch us.” It was an answer to R’nd’s earlier statement. It didn’t occur to B’jin that someday perhaps he might not wish the bluerider to capture his green; if it were to ever be raised, B’jin would likely brush it away. Even were the day to come where B’jin and R’nd didn’t enjoy one another’s company as much as they did in that moment, B’jin also knew R’nd was by far the best partner he’d been captured by.

The bluerider was gentle, and respectful, and he did a wonderful job of not making the situation awkward or stressful for the often anxious and timid greenrider. He was kind, and sweet, and Aren’t you supposed to get all emotional before I fly? The green dragon’s tone was both amused and tart, and caused B’jin to frown, an irritable pout contorting his lips as his face went vague with dragon-speak. Fuck off. Did that, remember? That’s why R’nd’s got that lovely hicki- the dragon didn’t even get to finish her teasing, before B’jin’s brown eyes were snapping back to R’nd and flickering anxiously over his face, his neck, his shoulders. He does not! The greenrider was still frowning sulkily, totally forgetting about R’nd’s lack of invitation to the internal conversation, and distracted enough to forget about the kisses and southern travelling hands.

I’m more surprised he believed me. Larrikith snorted, filling in Ayyonth to B’jin’s flurry of oddities, as she curled closer to the young blue. B’jin was hardly known for leaving his mark on his lover; considering the way he’d just freaked out that he might have, Larrikith was vaguely aware of why. Lingering trails of thought about N’mall and R’nd’s appreciation for his blemish free appearance swirled throughout, but mostly Larrikith wrote it off as B’jin being an overly sensitive worrywart.

At least life is never boring with them, Larrikith replied, looking up at Ayyonth archly before nuzzling him affectionately. I swear, some dragonets choose real rocks for humans. At least ours came with spunk. Sometimes too much, but mostly just enough to keep the little green constantly amused for one reason or another.

Grey eyes sparkled with adoration at B’jin stating he always wanted to be caught by the blue pair. “We will,” R’nd promised with a smile, ridiculously happy that B’jin still wanted him around. R’nd may have been the one with the reputation for never letting people get too close and stay too long but he still feared people would shove him away before he wanted something to end. He was messed up and some days even knew that he was with his way of viewing situations and switching his stance when it concerned him. Ayyonth pointed out once that it was a defence mechanism but R’nd, as he often did with thoughts and conversations that left him confused or floundering, had quickly pushed that idea away, leaving it to appear again on him someday when pieces fell together again.

R’nd opened his mouth again to add to the promise of always chasing but thought better of it when he remembered exactly which dragons the two of them were bonded to. The promise to always win on top of chasing would have been foolish to say and made him an oath-breaker likely on the next flight. Ayyonth and Larrikith were fond of each other but they also seemed to plot together and enjoyed mixing things up a little by having another win her flights. That had been proven twice before; once with Ayyonth refusing to budge from his comfortable spot on the ground and the other when they weren’t even informed about the flight. Those weren’t flights to dwell on, however, as S’kef’s win still made R’nd’s blood boil. One day there would be another confrontation with the brownrider for the state he had left B’jin in but for now, R’nd was content to stay true to that word he had given to B’jin as well to stay away.

“Would you like to slip back into the bath?” B’jin and water was a much better combo to think about than revenge and S’kef. Too bad the suggestion came during what was clearly a conversation with a dragon and R’nd frowned at the vague expression and wondered which was talking to B’jin and about what. R’nd didn’t mind Ayyonth chatting up other people without him being in the conversation though that usually meant he was being teased or a secret was being given away to be used against him, playfully, later on. I’m innocent this time, the blue tossed in lightly as his defence but was soon snickering at the way B’jin was frantically checking R’nd out and the way R’nd went wide-eyed and held still under the inspection. When everyone seemed calm again, another kiss was given to B’jin. It was a slight apology for doing whatever it had been to cause that reaction in his lover but mostly because he simply wanted to. There was a certain type of joy that came from kissing the greenrider that hadn’t quite been duplicated with anyone else.

Sitting up, R’nd gazed down at B’jin and took his time admiring the man from toes to head, before standing and offering his hand. “We have an entire bathing room to ourselves and yet the tub remains unused. I think we should correct this.” With their past and their interests R’nd had a feeling the tub was about to see quite a fair amount of use soon enough but for the moment, the offer was innocent and the idea of soaking in hot water after lying on stone for so long sounded wonderful.

And B’jin is teaching some of them, Ayyonth commented about rocks for humans. Some of those kids were doomed to a life of ridicule, if they stood out enough for such attention. Maybe a talk was in order with the Search dragons when they were allowed to go out again about seeking out potential Candidates that had more personality and less of a chance of making their rider happy in bed. That wouldn’t go over well but surely there was a mix somewhere in there? After all, R’nd was Searched and he clearly wasn’t a dud in looks or quirkiness. Ayyonth would have to remember to ask that dragon for pointers.

The first time R’nd voiced his question, it was indeed lost to greenrider ears, the man in question far too busy with the teasing words of his dragon and his own frantic reactions to hear anything R’nd might have said in amongst it all. The movements of his lover to sit up called attention, however, and B’jin blinked as he turned his gaze up at the bluerider. The intense examination he was subjected to, however, had a hot blush flaring up over the greenrider’s skin.

He didn’t shift, or try to cover himself; the small smile he offered when R’nd’s eyes met his own was timid and slightly anxious, an emotion that only flared to peak in a heartbeat of terror when R’nd stood up, beyond terrified that R’nd was going to leave him alone on the bathroom floor, disgusted by what he’d seen. As quickly as the terror had risen, it was gone, and a smile bloomed on the greenrider’s lips. Lifting his own hand, B’jin’s fingers twined eagerly with R’nd’s when his lover offered his hand and he allowed the other to help pull him to his feet.

“What a terrible waste,” B’jin murmured in reply, turning his head to look at the poor, abandoned pool of water even as he stepped closer to R’nd, cooled skin tingling with warmth and desire as it came into contact with his lover. “I think you may be right,” B’jin teased, leaning up to kiss R’nd, lingering and full of fun promises. Before his bluerider could respond with any great investment, B’jin was slipping away with a playful smirk and he toppled backwards into the water with a splash.

B’jin surfaced with a wide grin, an expression that rapidly transformed into a playfully suspicious glare, not seeing R’nd where he was supposed to be.

Some of the best of them, Larrikith agreed, mind quickly focusing on the young bluerider that was in the class, and rumbling softly in amusement. That pair was a force to be reckoned with! She really could not wait to hand them off to some sucker Wingleader to deal with. Hopefully, the kid would learn what way was up, and which were his left and right before that day came! Ayyonth’s unspoken train of thought was definitely something Larrikith would agree with, particularly on part of some of the Searchriders. They were clearly more obsessed with a couple of main organs, and not thinking of long term sacrifices that had to be made by a dragonet, when a class of crappy options were handed to them.

If more Searchriders doubled as Weyrlingmasters, the quality of candidates would drastically improve.

In the span of seconds, R’nd went from gawking at the way B’jin fell back into the pool of water to laughing at it. B’jin was so full of energy and no matter what anyone else might say, he wasn’t all that predictable and R’nd loved it. But two could play at the being spontaneous and teasing the other! Before B’jin emerged from his graceful black flop, R’nd slipped around to the opposite end of the tub and quickly sat on the edge, legs dipping into the water. It was all a matter of time and once B’jin came up and faced the same way he had been, no doubt expecting to see what his lover thought of the entrance, R’nd slipped silently into the water.

He was a water baby thanks to being born on the shores of the sea and raised to love and respect the water as it provided them with food and their income but could also take away lives and their livelihood. He was a strong swimmer but also knew how to play in the water as well thanks to having two older siblings, fosterlings, and the children of the area to play with. Stealth games where at least one person was blindfolded were fun and R’nd knew how to use his opponents splashing around to mask his own movements or to move slowly to sneak unnoticed. In this case, the water really wasn’t deep enough to employ all his tricks and the situation didn’t really call for it either given the small distance apart. All R’nd did after B’jin stared at empty space was sneak up on the man and wrap his arms around his lover. “Did you misplace someone?” He teased lightly with a laugh before loosening his hold enough for the greenrider to turn around but not wriggle free just yet. “Water looks good on you,” it was an odd compliment but a flirtatious one as the lustful gaze announced clearly. Insatiable as always, Ayyonth pointed out to both Larrikith and R’nd, the latter of which gave a mental eye roll but replied all the same. What can I say? B’jin keeps me inspired.

Done talking for the moment to all parties concerned, R’nd teased B’jin with a soft and lingering kiss. Slowly, with the power of kisses, R’nd guided B’jin down into the water and nearly purred as the heat soaked into his skin. Of course the company he was with was doing a wonderful job of heating him up as well! “Think anyone would notice if I built an extension to my hut and added a large tub for us to play in whenever we wanted?” He grinned wickedly at the idea and let his hands wander to demonstrate the playing he had in mind. “Maybe I’ll get rid of the couch and turn the living room into our bathing house.”

The greenrider blinked, and tilted his head to smile at R’nd as arms wrapped around him suddenly, expression both pleased and playful as he considered the teasing remark. “I think so,” B’jin purred softly, leaning back against R’nd before he turned around, grinning impishly at the bluerider’s playful compliment. B’jin wrapped his own arms around his lover, stepping closer again to minimise the amount of water between their bodies, fingers playing teasingly over the base of R’nd’s back. “It’s probably fogging up your eyes,” he teased playfully, enjoying immensely the kiss that followed, and allowing his lover to shift them as he saw fit, content and compliant, brown eyes bright with enjoyment. Coming to from flights had improved immensely since his captures with R’nd had become more common place.

B’jin enjoyed the security of knowing who it would be, almost as much as he enjoyed the thrill that rolled through his body when he recognised the body he was sprawled on, or beside, as his own consciousness separated from that of Larrikith and brain function was his own once more. B’jin could still recall the time before R’nd, when suitors were as different as Larrikith could manage, and their responses to capturing him just as varied. He could remember the insistent drive to wake up as himself first, and to flee before demands were made that he didn’t want to fulfil. He could remember how instead of feeling sated or happy or smug after a flight like so many of his colour mates, he would be grumpy and irritable and displeased. It was wonderful, to finally enjoy Larrikith’s flights after so many turns, and B’jin had no desire for that to stop, ever. He had never missed what he’d never had, but now that he had, B’jin knew he would miss it immensely should it ever go.

Soft laughter left his lips at R’nd’s question, deeply amused and he kissed R’nd playfully on the tip of his nose. “I think the steam might ruin your clothing,” B’jin teased, gaze darkening lustily as he felt the familiar hands playing across his body. “And they already run off on you.” A wicked smirk tilted his lips at the shared joke, body shifting invitingly against R’nd as his own hands danced lightly over his lover’s sides before dipping lower, fingers playing teasingly over his hips. “Hmm,” he purred softly. “M’not a fan of pool parties,” he teased, quite sure if anyone built a pool in their home, it would be centre stage for a party; build one in R’nd’s and he would never see his pretty lover again, and that would be terribly tragic! Shifting again, B’jin leaned in to kiss the bluerider, the action charged with a little more possessive affection than B’jin was personally aware of, though not necessarily something he would have denied.

“Hmm, you bring up an excellent point. I’d hate to further chase my clothing away with unneeded steam encounters,” some things never got old and R’nd liked having inside jokes with B’jin that they could playfully touch upon when the mood struck them. It was one of the many little things that made their relationship as something more than just physical. He certainly didn’t mind how physical it was! It was also oddly nice to be able to spend time with B’jin in comfortable silence, being a bit goofy, or with a hobby as well. That’s because you’re growing up. Ayyonth added to the thought, pleased with how much his clueless bonded had grown in the last few turns. Stop eavesdropping and enjoy your time with Larrikith before I think denying you friends is a good idea. He wouldn’t actually do it and the snort of a reply given told R’nd that Ayyonth knew it was another empty threat as well.

He grumbled something about pesky dragons before B’jin was suddenly kissing him more fiercely than usual. R’nd had to admit; he loved when B’jin was a bit more dominant and possessive. It made him feel wanted and given his fear that he’d be turned away by everyone one day, it was a reassuring feeling. Once, it would have been a terrifying feeling mingling with that reassurance thanks to his contradictory personality but he didn’t feel smothered and he didn’t worry about what that possessiveness might mean. He did know if R’nd allowed himself to think about that surprise turn in a conversation that had been meant to confess to sleeping with I’shan without N’gelt and B’jin knowing but remembering that little phrase B’jin had so casually said made his heart beat a little faster and breaths fall a bit shorter. So it was often better to pretend it didn’t happen.

Hands travelled over B’jin’s body as R’nd enjoyed the kiss the greenrider led until he settled them on B’jin’s waist. Without a word, R’nd guided his lover to straddle his lap and arms circled around B’jin’s waist to hold him close as a naughty grin toyed over lips swollen from too many delightful kisses. “And what about private parties? With only two names on the reservation sheet?” Despite his nature and hopping into different beds in the same night, R’nd wasn’t all that interested in sharing during sex – with an exception or two allowed, like twins, of course – and was perfectly fine giving all of his attention to one lover and receiving all of their attention in return.

“I’m fine with it always being a party of two,” fingers that were gliding up B’jin’s back stilled a moment as all the meanings connected with that sentence. Had he just implied he was not only fine with one-on-one sex but their relationship staying as only the two of them? No, he couldn’t have! That would have been silly and breaking unspoken rules between them. Pretending he hadn’t just spooked himself, R’nd went back to drawing circles on B’jin’s back, waiting for his response and what type of party his amazing greenrider was interested in right then.

“That depends,” B’jin’s voice was husky, the smile a teasing and playful expression as he kissed R’nd lightly on the nose, hands dropping lower with suggestive intent down R’nd’s sides. “On who owns those names,” brown eyes sparkled playfully, and B’jin shifted his seat with innocent airs when R’nd’s hands paused in their motions over his back. The insinuation lingering in the bluerider’s words was lost on B’jin, who sniggered playfully. “Not dragonriders then,” he teased, smirking pointedly at the wall in the direction their dragons were located.

Or maybe only a dragonrider! B’jin coughed out a sudden laugh, the sound clear and bright as he collapsed forward to press his forehead to R’nd’s shoulder, laughter still bubbling from his lips, shoulders shaking as he tried to suppress the sound a little. With a ‘party of two’ suddenly becoming a dragonrider and his beast, B’jin’s mind shot off in all kinds of directions, namely imagining poor R’nd restricted to his own company rather than that of his various lovers. A lonely status his randy lover would surely never live long in! While B’jin was quite sure R’nd was more than capable of taking care of his own needs were it required, it was not something he imagined regularly occurred!

The greenrider’s laughter calmed to naughty giggles, the sounds muffled as he took to nibbling on R’nd’s collarbone, and lightly up the side of his neck; B’jin would keep him from being lonely! The greenrider valiantly tried to swallow his laughter, and mostly succeeded. The amusement was still thick in his voice when he murmured in his lover’s ear, and the giggles were a long way from death. “Dragonriders come in parties of four, love.” B’jin teased lowly, drawing back to smirk wickedly at R’nd, his face flushed from laughter, naughty thoughts and the warm water.

His expression had a slightly quirky lilt to it, the greenrider not quite able to imagine even a youthful R’nd in the awkward stages where masturbating was easier than hopping into someone’s bed; his lover was so confident! B’jin shook his head, bemused and smiling affectionately at R’nd before he leaned in to claim another kiss, drawing away just enough to peer up through his lashes his expression barely above begging. They could talk later, right? “I like this party,” B’jin was positively purring, laughter vanishing as swiftly as it had appeared, and he shifted his seat again, radiating faux innocence as his hands went back to their exploring. “We should throw more of them.” The words were whispered lightly, before initiating another kiss. This one was inviting, and waiting to follow.

Surely R’nd wouldn’t make him beg on his birthday!

R’nd was confused over B’jin’s words, wondering what he meant by it not being exactly what was being implied. The laughter that was trying to be smothered did nothing to help the bluerider comprehend a thing and he sat there with his gorgeous lover on his lap, not moving, as he waited for B’jin to pull himself together and possibly explain. The explanation wasn’t likely to come with the way the laughter was turning into giggles. Was that improvement? It was hard to say but R’nd continued to sit with a frown and furrowed brows as he thought about what he said. Finally, B’jin rescued him with an explanation after all.

“…come in fours?” R’nd murmured an echo of B’jin and he frowned even more before cluing in and laughed. “Not the way I count, love! The human side of those particular pairs is the only side that counts when it comes to intimacy and me.” He definitely didn’t want to be without Ayyonth in any other aspect though! It was hard to think back to his life before Impression without wondering how he managed without his wise-assed dragon there with him. It had clearly been a good life – given the circumstances – but everything seemed so complete and right with Ayyonth that imagining the current moment without the blue didn’t make any sense at all. You aren’t making any sense as it is, R’nd. Just give up on thinking and kiss your wriggling lover.

And you go back to cuddling your napping lover. R’nd scowled at the wall over B’jin’s shoulder but quickly turned it into a playful grin at B’jin’s encouragement for more of their one on one gatherings. “Anytime you want them, B’jin,” R’nd promised on a low purr. He didn’t need anything else to nudge him on with the inviting kiss lingering between them. It was tempting to tease the birthday boy and make him wait as revenge for all the giggles but R’nd was a bit too aroused and craved his greenrider a bit too much in that moment to make himself wait it out. “But let’s tend to this party first.” His mouth went for B’jin’s collar bone as hands dipped lower to begin enticing B’jin into letting loose and enjoying himself.

The impish smirk was still in place as B’jin bickered playfully with R’nd over who would be helping whom out of the tub, and managed to scramble out of the water first, before offering his hand to R’nd with a smirk. The greenrider wasn’t sure if he won, or if he’d been allowed to win, but that was beside the point as he jerked R’nd out of the water with a little more strength than he’d anticipated, and staggered backwards several steps with a gleeful snigger, dragging R’nd with him rather than shoving him unintentionally back into the pool.

“You’re all wet,” B’jin’s eyes widened innocently and he tugged on a lock of R’nd’s hair with all the airs of never having seen his lover post bath before. The playfulness was clearly the instigator of stating the obvious, and B’jin’s cheerful face vanished as he revealed a towel with a sudden swirl of movement, and dropped it over the top of R’nd’s head. Leaving his lover to fend with his lack of vision for a moment, B’jin wrapped a towel around his own waist as he trotted over to the shelves on one side of the room. The room in question was one of his favourites, because for some reason when he left jars of lavender oil lying around in it, they didn’t vanish! It was one of the bigger, more luxurious rooms, and probably one generally reserved more for those of rank than lowly greenriders and their randy partners.

Humming happily to himself, B’jin turned to make his way back to R’nd, but grinned impishly at his lover when he turned to find him right there. “Hello.” Brown eyes sparkled as B’jin wriggled out of R’nd’s hands and ducked behind him, poking and prodding the younger man across the room to where there was a small seating bench against the wall. It was such a lovely little room! “Sit!” B’jin commanded, more laughter than anything else in his voice as he plopped down beside R’nd, folding one leg under the other so he could twist and he poked R’nd in the ribs playfully “The wall is prettier than me, love,” B’jin teased, waiting patiently for R’nd to sit with his back to him.

Pouring some of the oil into his hand, B’jin put the jar down on the floor and rubbed his hands together to warm it before running his hands with gentle firmness over R’nd’s shoulders, the base of his neck, and down his sides. B’jin had none of Talian’s knowledge of how bodies were put together (or how to put them back together) but he knew how to give a massage! Leaning forward, B’jin smiled against R’nd’s ear. “Did you have plans for today?”

I think that’s B’jin’s way of saying they’ve just been made void.

There was nothing to do but laugh as they raced out of the tub, laugh as B’jin pulled him free, laugh as they tumbled several steps across the room, and of course, laugh when a towel was suddenly flung on his head. R’nd grabbed the towel, giving his hair a quick rubdown with it to help correct the fact that he was all wet. It was so very rude of the bath to leave him in such a wet state! His torso wasn’t given much attention, same with his legs, as R’nd wrapped the towel around his waist and snuck back up on his lover. The playful mood that had a strong hold on them both had B’jin wriggling away before he could be properly captured and kissed and R’nd only grinned as he watched the man dance out of reach.

He willingly followed the gentle shoving that came soon after that left R’nd a little confused as to why he was being dragged all over the room. He didn’t mind, not when so much fun was had in every corner and surface of the room but he did like knowing a little sometimes! When he reached the bench, his thoughts drifted back to dirtier paths and R’nd wondered what they could get up to on it, especially with B’jin seeming to be in his more dominant role. That side didn’t appear too much or too loudly, but R’nd always enjoyed seeing it and could even admit to sometimes trying to bait it to come out. He didn’t think he had this time and grinned when he was ordered to sit, obeying immediately and looking forward to what would follow.

Despite seeing the jar B’jin had grabbed, R’nd hadn’t been expecting a massage and was almost instantly turning into putty beneath his lover’s touch. There was a moment where a frown stole his features as R’nd remembered the day was supposed to be spent spoiling B’jin but with each stroke of palm over skin and kneading of knuckles over a knot, R’nd was gently eased away from such distressing thoughts.

“Hmm,” did he have plans? R’nd didn’t think he had as his head lulled forward, chin resting against his chest as he gave himself over to the hands working his muscles. The soak in the tub was nice on his back though the extra activities they got up to probably didn’t help erase any of the tension from being on the hard floor for too long, but this was heavenly. He could improvise his way through a massage as a treat to spoil a lover with and he was fairly convinced there had been a woman once that kept trying to copy their mutual friend with massages but failed miserably – though the friend was quite good with her hands and R’nd couldn’t recall having any complaints about her. But this particular massage wasn’t foreplay like the others; this was simply an enjoyable treat with a relaxing scent that was so very B’jin – and Larrikith, of course – that R’nd left himself vulnerable and completely open to the greenrider that nothing else seemed to matter right then, until he remembered what day it was and freely babbled.

“I was going to spend the morning pretending I wasn’t stressing over giving you a birthday gift you would like or how you might not want me to know it was today. Then I was going to bribe someone to make an amazing dinner for us and hope you didn’t already have plans.” He still didn’t like his attempt at painting and still believed he wouldn’t give it to B’jin but otherwise, R’nd felt his attempts at making it a special day would have gone over well. A flight and win in the bathhouse hadn’t factored into any of scenarios for how the day would go but so far, R’nd felt it was the best one he could have hoped for – even with the near disaster because of his wording and surprise birthday greeting.

I think even though he was getting someone else to make a dinner, that voiding all meal attempts with these two is always a good idea. Ayyonth nuzzled his nose against Larrikith’s shoulder before resting his head once more on his paws, content to nap the day away beside his favourite lady. Besides, B’jin probably wouldn’t want to know how R’nd has come to acquire so many favours.

B’jin positively glowed with delight as he watched R’nd flake under his touch, the greenrider humming happily under his breath, an impish grin still pulled over his lips and brown eyes bright with simple happiness. He enjoyed seeing other people happy; he particularly enjoyed seeing R’nd happy, and he especially liked being the one that made the bluerider happy! He continued humming as R’nd thought, the tune as light and playful as their moods were; the song it belonged to was an upbeat teaching ballad, with a silly story designed to teach children the names of all the Weyrs and major holdings and halls that looked to each one.

B’jin laughed softly, breaking off his humming and kissing the side of R’nd’s neck. “I don’t need any gifts, dear, and I don’t mind that you know.” (So long as there are no numbers involved!; Shut it, you.) Another light kiss, and B’jin took up his humming once more, picking up the tune where he had interrupted it as R’nd continued with his babbling. The bluerider really was very endearing! Another light laugh interrupted his tune, and B’jin wrapped his arms around R’nd’s waist, resting his chin on the other man’s shoulder.

Amusement was thick in his voice. “I had no plans, love. I spent the last three days bribing Amorandii’s mother to keep the brat away from me. Her birthday parties are terrifying!” A wicked smirk stole B’jin’s lips as he eyed R’nd sideways, chin still perched on his shoulder. “She’s on the hunt for your birthday now. Apparently you love her more than I do, so you’ll let her throw you a party.” Laughter was thick in his voice, and it was quite clear B’jin had encouraged such a wild hunt in order to distract the girl from his own impending doom. “If we’re lucky, Larri will fly then, too.” B’jin paused a moment, “… preferably when we’re not in a room overflowing with children.” His tone was dry, for that. That would be just like Larrikith.

Oh please, Larrikith grumbled, speaking to the entire little gathering. I have some class! Honestly! As if she’d scar the children like that! B’jin just laughed, rolling his eyes and wiping oily fingers across R’nd’s stomach as he sat up straighter once more, eager fingers gliding over his lover’s back; the action was less massage, and more a lazy excuse to simply touch. His bluerider had such a lovely body!

I think he knows, Larrikith murmured in reply to Ayyonth, curling closer against the blue’s side and nuzzling his cheek. He just chooses to ignore it. She yawned lazily, equally as happy to do nothing for the rest of the day while their humans danced around each other in their usual style.

R’nd laughed at the dramatics and could easily picture Amorandii and B’jin discussing birthdays, parties, and who loved her more. He was actually surprised B’jin held his ground and didn’t give in to his daughter’s desires to have a party since she was one spoiled young lady that had her father wrapped around her finger. Then again, she had already managed to snag R’nd as well and the bluerider knew keeping his birthday a secret for much longer wasn’t going to happen. Considering his birthday was in fact the same day as Amorandii’s R’nd was surprised she hadn’t weaseled the information out of him already. It had been close last turn when he had been tricked into attending her celebration and she was getting her hugs out of him. It had been tempting to whisper in her ear a secret meant only for them that they shared the day but he refrained, not wanting to steal any sort of attention from her that day.

Now, it seemed like he’d have to give her fair warning so she could adjust to the idea of sharing her party, though R’nd was rather fond of the idea of Larrikith flying on that particular day. It hadn’t happened yet but R’nd had picked up her flight pattern early on and knew she was due in the eleventh month but what were the odds of her naturally flying on the ninth day or being provoked into rising then? R’nd didn’t think the odds were in their favour. “You never know, Larrikith may spoil us again,” he commented positively anyway, keeping the hope alive. Besides, how could he be in a negative mood with his lover giving him a massage?

“Is it odd that I don’t announce my approaching birthday to everyone each turn?” R’nd didn’t explain why he asked, figuring it had to be obvious. He was outgoing and friendly but also had a bit of an ego so a party in his honour seemed like something that had to be done. R’nd couldn’t really explain it but his ego was in a way why he didn’t want everyone to know. He worried over people fighting for his attention and vying for the honour of giving the best gift and being rewarded in return with whatever he was willing to give. He had been fought over before and simply didn’t want to deal with that on his birthday. “Amorandii has a better lead than most for finding the date out,” it was vaguely cryptic and the grin R’nd tossed over his shoulder to B’jin said he knew as much as well. He’d tell them both one day but for now, that was the only, and best, hint his lover was getting.

“And I’m glad you don’t have plans. I’d like to steal more of your time if you’d let me,” R’nd didn’t really want to give up the position he was in with the lazy wanderings of hands over his back but he shifted on the bench all the same so he could face B’jin. “Especially since I want to spend most of that time pampering you, love.” B’jin’s hands were grabbed and each raised in turn to be kissed.

“You won’t even have to worry about your class this day. V’ler will watch over them for us.” Ayyonth snorted at the statement and spoke to R’nd and Larrikith, opting to leave B’jin out of the conversation. Does V’ler know about this arrangement? First I’ve heard of it. R’nd didn’t bat an eye at his dragon pointing out the flaw in the plan he had just come up with and mentally shrugged the question away. He will once you ask him to.

“Perhaps,” B’jin replied, though he was not nearly as hopeful of the green actually flying at a time that might be appreciated by anyone but herself. She was far too content to fly at every other time instead. She’d probably be more inclined to throw them all off the charts by flying either side of the bluerider’s birthday and watching the entire Weyr scratch the heads over her actions. Larrikith sniggered in the back of his mind, and B’jin brushed her away dismissively. Brat dragon!

B’jin’s hands paused where they were playing over R’nd’s sides, and he considered the question thoughtfully. “Not really,” he answered, his thinking pause allowing R’nd to add in his cryptic remark about Amorandii and B’jin smiled. “I think most people stop after they hit a certain age.” That age tended to vary, but B’jin was fairly sure it stopped when the numbers started getting ‘too big’. After all, being old wasn’t attractive by most people’s standards! “And she doesn’t need any leads,” B’jin teased, digging his fingers into R’nd’s ribs playfully with a soft laugh.

B’jin smiled brightly at the announcement that R’nd wanted to steal more of his time, hands lingering over the bluerider’s hips as the younger man turned around to face him. B’jin blinked, paused to process the words, and then pouted playfully. He liked spoiling the bluerider, and he wasn’t quite sure how to deal with being turned into the spoiled one; it certainly hadn’t been his plan! He blinked again. “Okay?”

The comment about V’ler had a sudden smirk flickering over B’jin’s lips; he didn’t need to hear Ayyonth’s comment to know that was a last minute arrangement that the younger bluerider would grumble about dramatically (Valerian style, of course) and give B’jin dirty looks for. “Of course he will,” B’jin agreed innocently, forgetting his discomfort at the idea of being pampered specifically as he leaned forward to kiss the bluerider gently, wriggling his hands free to wrap his arms around R’nd in a tight hug, before relaxing lazily against him.

Larrikith gave Ayyonth an amused sideways look, her nose scrunching up slightly in a truly dramatic air of disgust. I think B’jin is going to explode from all his mushy feelings, she stated, but her eyes were swirling with pleasured delight and she licked Ayyonth’s cheek affectionately.

He wasn’t ticklish though a soft laugh at the attempt always escaped regardless but what R’nd did properly react to was the kiss and hug. He smiled warmly after the kiss and wrapped his arms around B’jin as the greenrider took to resting against him. While he had never been one to love cuddling until his attempts for some lovers turned into something he genuinely started to enjoy, R’nd was always okay with giving hugs. They could be friendly or protective, which was how he always perceived them until more and more time was spent with B’jin. They were still protective but gave off a stronger vibe of trust now as well with the way they could relax in each other’s arms. Another odd but interesting thing R’nd had picked out in their somewhat relationship.

He held B’jin in silence for a few moments as one hand made its way to blonde locks to tease his fingers through. “Did you want to stay in here a while longer or would you like to move to a place that typically requires more clothing before I sweep you away to another clothing-free zone?” R’nd was grinning as he pulled back just enough for B’jin to see the mischievous expression he wore. He figured they could go find a snack in the kitchens before returning to his hut to try giving the gift he had made. Whether he did or not or if it would be well-received were things he still didn’t know but it seemed like a good way to continue the day he had successfully acquired. “There may be another slightly clothed stop planned for later as well. We’ll see how much you distract me first.” The idea that wine, the lake, and the sunset would go wonderfully together in a romantic and peaceful combination hit R’nd out of the blue and he almost frowned at that. Why hadn’t he come up with that before? Perhaps because those were three things he enjoyed and while R’nd knew B’jin loved wine, the beach could be a touchy spot – but at least Larrikith had already flown! – and did such a person exist that didn’t like sunsets? Well, he babbled to himself, perhaps people that viewed them as symbolizing the end of something didn’t like them but they were always the start of a fun night to him.

I hope he does. Maybe that will spark R’nd’s mushy feelings enough that he can’t keep ignoring them, Ayyonth rumbled with his amusement, knowing that any further confessions B’jin might let slip out wouldn’t scare R’nd away. His silly human had already weathered the first uttering of love, after all. If anything, R’nd would likely pale a little, squirm a bit as well, but then kiss his lover, smile, and pretend nothing out of the ordinary had happened. It was frustrating but still fun to watch as well and Ayyonth felt they were due another decent show. Then again, the whole topic of the birthday had been awkward and delightful.

“Hrm,” B’jin purred lowly, leaning forward to pepper kisses along R’nd’s shoulder and up the side of his neck. “Decisions.” There was no real answer in the word, though he did stop the kisses once he’d made his way to R’nd’s lips and placed a light one upon them, leaning back again so that he was out of reach and smiling mischievously. “This day keeps sounding better,” he smirked playfully up at R’nd.

B’jin didn’t have much to go on, in the way of exciting birthdays, and he’d certainly never had Larrikith fly on one. That, of course, was a miracle in and of itself up until that day. Larrikith had never been one to truly give B’jin any reason to enjoy her flights until she took a shine to Ayyonth; the greenrider simply thrilled that it was something he managed to reap the rewards from, as well! Flying with R’nd was so much better than any of his other (far too numerous) flight partners! Flashing a sudden warm and genuine smile, B’jin stole another kiss before reluctantly standing, and stepping just far enough away from R’nd to avoid either of them getting ideas, or more notably, side tracked by those ideas.

Eyes, locked on R’nd, were alight with playful abandon as he pulled his lover to his feet lazily. “Let’s get most of this clothing stuff over with.” A naughty smile light up B’jin’s face, and he dropped R’nd’s hands to filch the man’s towel with one hand, while holding his own in place with the other so R’nd couldn’t return the favour. “Oops.” Skipping backwards out of reach, B’jin tossed the now empty towel behind him and well out of reach, and glanced around for where their clothing was at… which was all over the place.

“You’d think,” B’jin said lightly as he darted around the room, playfully avoiding R’nd as he collected his clothing and struggled into his pants, “since I wasn’t wearing anything when you caught us, that my clothes would have managed to stay where I put them.” He smirked at R’nd, shaking his head as he tied the laces on his pants and kicked his towel over to where R’nd’s was piled sadly. “I think they’re growing legs like yours, love.” B’jin rocked back on his heels, shirt hanging over his right arm as his left hand raked back through his hair; it was more air-dried than wet, but droplets still splattered from the length of blonde.

“Maybe they’ll lead us to wherever yours have taken to hiding.” B’jin bit back a laugh, teeth biting into his bottom lip, expression full of the sound he refused to give voice to.

R’nd gave a half-hearted grab for his towel that was being whisked away before laughing and standing there on display. He had no qualms about being naked before B’jin and didn’t really mind it in public either. He did try to avoid that since it was generally frowned upon, especially by D’ren. That was the only reason why R’nd hadn’t chased after B’jin after their first flight together and the greenrider managed to get dressed first and saunter off through the busy Dining Hall. Then again, R’nd wasn’t quite sure what he would have said or done if he had gone after B’jin. That was a question he toyed with for quite some time afterwards and now occasionally wondered if he’d still be there now with B’jin if he had pursued the man that day. Perhaps he would have been viewed as too forward or clingy and B’jin would have walked away then and later in the Square when R’nd caught him painting.

He liked how things turned out though and R’nd had no desire to find a way to go back in time and find out the answers to his random ponderings. Instead he focused on the present and playfully grabbing for B’jin’s towel when the greenrider danced a bit too close. He wouldn’t actually take the towel but teasing that he would was far too fun to let slip by!

As he slipped on his own pants, R’nd chuckled and shrugged at the question about clothes being scattered when they weren’t even being worn at the time. It was R’nd’s belief that given how passionate they were in their own minds and the state of things around them in that time, that it stood to reason that flightlust made them into little tornadoes that managed to get their hands on everything as they tangled and collided in their passion. It was all rather amusing but the mentioning of his clothes walking off on him was even more so! “I hope so! I do miss those brave pieces of clothing that went off on their adventures! I imagine yours would enjoy the trip if they manage to break away as well.”

R’nd slipped his shirt on and ran his fingers through his mess of hair before finally giving in and making a play for grabbing B’jin and holding him close. “You’re still just as desirable with clothes on, love,” R’nd murmured into the crook of B’jin’s neck that he started kissing. Kerrin called him ‘Randy’ with good reason besides it being something similar to the way some people tried saying his honorific but if he were randy in a normal state of being, then having the lingering effects of flightlust to work with only made him worse. Luckily he still knew what boundaries were but he was far more willing to show B’jin how attracted he was to the greenrider than normal. At the rate he was working, they’d never leave the bathhouse!

That wouldn’t be an entirely bad thing except R’nd was convinced they would be prunes before long with all of the water and humidity. That would be just as tragic as never having the moment with B’jin! Forcing himself to pull away from the temptations that awaited him, R’nd smiled and waved for the door. “Shall we? The day offers us much and more!”

Bright laughter answered R’nd’s comments, B’jin smirking playfully as his mind wandered to all the silly locations he had carefully stowed R’nd’s various articles of clothing that he had nicked over the last two turns… Wait. B’jin blinked and shook his head, frowning slightly as his mind hiccupped over that number for a moment before he was delightfully distracted by R’nd as the bluerider swept him close with eager hands. Well, he had never been particularly good with silly numbers, anyway. Or words. B’jin hummed happily, the sound coming out husky as he tilted his head. “Of course I am!” he murmured, hands wandering down the bluerider’s sides, then up under the shirt.

As R’nd stepped back, pulling away, B’jin’s features contorted into a frown and his fingers tightened for a moment over R’nd’s waist before he huffed and retracted his hands almost comically. Giving the bluerider an irritable look, tinged heavily with amusement, B’jin adjusted his pants, hardly bothering to be subtle as he tugged the hem of his shirt down and gave R’nd another dirty look, just to be sure, he got the message. After a decent pause (he had to be sure!) B’jin flashed a bright smile, and wrapped his arm around R’nd’s waist, melding against the bluerider’s side. “Where to first, my most lovely one?” The smirk was cheerful and playful as B’jin let R’nd lead them out of the room.
