B’jin was shamelessly excited for the events of the evening. Shamelessly! The greenrider was bouncing on the balls of his feet enough to challenge even Z’ia in a contest to discover the one with the most springs, as he fluttered around his room. Then he was leaving, flittering around the Weyrling barracks and annoying the high heavens out of his Weyrling group. Then, finally, he was making his way to R’nd’s hut to skitter around and annoy his lover with his far too chipper mood. B’jin was excited damn it!

The greenrider hadn’t been overly involved in the events of the graduation that R’nd and his classmates had been a part of. He’d been far too wrapped up in the ups and downs of his own life, his dragon, his children, and N’mall to be overly concerned with their graduation. He’d still managed to sing a few songs, and dance and get drunk before calling it a night – but he hadn’t been invested in it like he would be that night – after all, as he kept telling R’nd with far too much excitement – Valerian had written him a song to sing, and Valerian was going to graduate, and he’d be a real rider and he’d get an honorific and what did R’nd think he’d get?

B’jin had had far too much fun the previous day - when he’d collected the song sheet, which he was still too excited to actually read yet – making fun of Valerian and pulling every terrible possible honorific he could think of out of his brain. Of course, as soon as she picked up on what he was doing, Larrikith had been ten kinds of helpful when it came to thinking up awful combinations and B’jin had done his best to talk Veeth into picking one verbally, while reassuring the young dragon mentally that Valerian would be much happier with something boring like… well, B’jin didn’t know. Just boring!

Then B’jin had realised he’d lost his music sheet – which, again, he still hadn’t read – and freaked out, sweeping around R’nd’s hut like a hurricane before Rell had frightened him terribly by popping out of between with the sheets. B’jin had no idea where they had been, but was suitably shamefaced when Larrikith told him he’d left them on his bed. B’jin had slunk around the hut putting back to right the mess he’d made before his high spirits crushed his shame and he began bouncing around once more. Tonight was going to be so much fun!

Needing to expend rather a lot of energy, B’jin had suddenly turned his attentions upon R’nd. What better way to start a great night with an amazing lover? He had possibly actually said that, because at one point R’nd had looked a little starry eyed and B’jin had pounced; the music sheet had lain forgotten on the floor for an indeterminable amount of time, before the lovers were parting to do their own things once more, B’jin much more sedate as he left the hut, throwing R’nd a wicked smirk before going to bathe, shave, dress – and read that damned music! – B’jin had laughed at his dragon, and promised to do just that.

The greenrider still hadn’t managed to read the lyrics or music by the time he was joining the growing crowed within the Gather Square. There were riders and non both setting up tables and chairs around the edges, dragons being helpful – or not – as they ran around. The air was positively alive with firelizards and B’jin swatted at one of the little browns that got in his face, wondering who it belonged to before it vanished. It wasn’t Rell, and it wasn’t Fellis, so it wasn’t important to him. Seeing the Harper stand being set up, B’jin was soon rushing over, taking charge and making demands. It was his stage and they’d set it up how he wanted!

Timid greenrider he was not, when there was music involved! Decades of Harpering and an arrogance usually not anywhere near the surface came alive in him, issuing orders, setting demands and expecting to be listened to and obeyed B’jin was a force to be reckoned with as he made sure the set up was just the way he wanted it, and the rest of them be damned. He was the most experienced, and it was he that Valerian had asked to sing the song he’d written… Which B’jin still hadn’t read!

Fretting suddenly, B’jin made sure the rest of the set up was underway before sitting down on the edge of the stage, and burying his nose in the sheets of parchment. He read the first page, then skipped to the last, with barely a glance at the centre. He’d have the sheets on display and was quite good at reading as he sang. He was more concerned about getting the right instruments on stage with him and – thank Faranth, Valerian hadn’t made it some piece of idiocy duet. B’jin hated sharing the limelight when there was singing involved! Backup singers were okay, if they were really required, but as far as his craft was concerned, B’jin was quite happy to be the centre of attention.

For a few hours, anyway. Maybe a song or three after the one Valerian had written. Then he’d drag R’nd to dance until his feet were too sore to move, and maybe he’d make Valerian dance with him too, just because he could and it would make the Weyrling scowl, he was sure. Par’a would probably try to steal him for a dance or two, but that was fine! Maybe he’d convince his friend to snag R’nd while he danced with Valerian – that would be funny! B’jin sniggered as he climbed to his feet, calling out for various Harper trained people he knew, who could play the required instruments.

Damn it was going to be a fun night!

A very basic run-down of the IC evening;
6pm to 8pm
- Everyone will gather, and eat all the yummy food that's been prepared for the party! Whoo!

8pm
- S'kef will be making an announcement before the ceremony gets under way, relating to the ceremony itself, as well as (possibly!) some hints about the Murder Mystery...

After S'kef's Announcement
- Weyrlings will receive their new Honorific and graduated rider knots.

by 9pm
- Everyone will cheer

There after
- There will be booze and music and sex.
- Lots of hangovers on the 5th.

You're welcome to make your own threads around the event, or fill this one with all the things.

R’nd was ridiculously excited for the weyrling graduation. It wasn’t even for him but he was as giddy – possibly even more so in the cases of some – as the actual weyrlings. Nostalgia was a good friend of the bluerider’s and R’nd was nearly dancing in it as he thought about how the night would go. His own graduation had been highly celebrated since they were the first clutch produced after the plague nearly made the dragons an extinct species. There had been a lot of drinking, dancing, and kissing – and that were only R’nd’s activities!

He had never been overly fond of his given name of Orwind but when Ayyonth chose the honorific of R’nd, he had been dumbfounded and even a bit embarrassed over such a silly name that lacked vowels. At the time, the only thing that consoled him was the fact that D’hys and many other riders had lost on any bets placed on him. From what he could remember, there was only one person that guessed he would be called R’nd and cleaned up on that win. The bastard should have given him half for being the one stuck with the name! The grudge he held against Ayyonth last only a few days as Orwind settled in and became R’nd and grew fond of the name. Now, he honestly couldn’t think of himself as anything else. The naming portion of the evening was definitely something the bluerider looked forward to! He didn’t place any bets, except in fun with B’jin but there were certainly still bragging rights involved!

His own graduation helped erase the horrible memories of not Impressing for the initial clutch he was Searched for and then watching those weyrlings die off from the plague or not seeing them again after the reunion because they didn’t make the trip South or died in the wilderness. That had been another nightmare that haunted him for a long time but Ayyonth’s presence eased most of them and B’jin curling up beside him most nights helped with the nightmares that involved him being alone forever whether due to being forgotten or hated. He was a bit of a head case but surprisingly no one had really caught on to that.

Like all the Hatchings since Impressing Ayyonth, R’nd imagined he was going to get sentimental during the ceremony, even more so than he had been that day leading up to the moment. Ayyonth for the most part ignored it and B’jin didn’t seem to really notice given how bouncy and energetic he was. His lover was quite the distraction – he always was, truth be told – from getting too caught up in being sappy and R’nd ended up smiling and laughing far more than he was silent and reflective when B’jin was visiting. It certainly didn’t help that the greenrider gave him a compliment and pounced him. That only served to make the start of the night all the better and to remind R’nd that he had a pretty amazing life and how lucky he was.

The song B’jin kept going on about, however, took over a lot of R’nd’s precious thoughts as the sun started to set. He took his time picking out an outfit for the big night and wondered if he would have been able to read the song as a sneak peek when B’jin wasn’t looking. He likely wouldn’t have been able to, even if Rell gave him the sheets instead of delivering them to the flustered Harper which R’nd was convinced was an effort to have B’jin like him more. The poor blue just wanted to be loved! No doubt B’jin would have freaked out and possibly committed murder if the song was read before he had a chance to properly debut it in its intended form. He’d be a good fan and wait patiently!

R’nd still wouldn’t fully admit it but he really was a fan of B’jin. His crush had lasted for roughly half of his life – a fact he figured out only once, paled over it, and quickly ignored – due to B’jin being the perfect dragonrider role model, being an amazing Harper, and simply being a fantastic human. A lot of it had been exaggerated due to the youthful vision he saw B’jin in but the more time spent with the older man, the more R’nd believed everything he always thought the greenrider to be anyway. So seeing him so excited over one of his passions only made R’nd just as happy and he couldn’t wait to hear the song and see everyone’s reactions!

With his bluerider knots slipped into place, R’nd was finally ready to go. He didn’t wear his rank often, seeing no real reason for them considering the small community and how everyone knew him in some way but gathers were another tale. Graduation seemed especially important to have them on since he would be welcoming a class of weyrlings into proper dragonrider ranks. He hoped they were as excited as he was over this!

He arrived before the official start of the dinner portion of the night with Ayyonth landing off to the side to let his rider down. Once R’nd was on the ground, the blue dragon took off again to select a prime location to view all the chaos the night would surely bring once alcohol and music started flowing. R’nd smiled when he saw B’jin though he wasn’t sure if his picky lover saw him while he directed people around the stage. Not at all fazed over the scene, R’nd went over to help one of the kitchen women who was carrying what looked to be a heavy platter of meat and quickly found himself helping with bringing out the last of the food. If he was lucky, this meant extra treats the next time he snuck into the kitchen between meals!

“This is it.”

It is.

Human and dragon both sat outside the small hut staring at each other. Valerian wondered if he was supposed to feel any different that day. He thought maybe he did but then changed his mind. Impressing Veeth had changed everything and while he always loved dragons before, he had been introduced to a whole new level of love and had to adjust to sharing his head with Veeth and dealing with flights. He could say he felt different after the Hatching but right then, two turns later, he still felt the same as he had the day before and six months before. Maybe the feeling would come after the ceremony and the honorific was bestowed upon him. Valerian doubted it since that would only result in receiving new knots to wear and everyone calling him something new.

Speaking of that, Veeth wouldn’t tell him what name he had chosen. I have yet to decide, the blue added as he listened in on Valerian’s thoughts. He doubted that was the case. Veeth was easy-going but he didn’t think his dragon would wait until the last second to decide something they would be stuck with forever. He knew his name yielded a handful of options and B’jin seemed intent on getting one of the more outlandish and horrible ones selected. So long as he had vowels in the honorific, Valerian felt he was doing well no matter the choice.

It wouldn’t be long before he had the final answer so it wasn’t worth spending too much more time on. Getting to his feet, Valerian dusted his legs and backside off since he was already dressed for his big night. Even with all the formal portions of the night with speeches and what not, Valerian knew the night was going to be fun as well. Sure, there would be dancing and he’d likely sing a song or two but he had made sure the night would be special and one to remember thanks to the song he wrote for B’jin to sing. It was special for a multitude of reasons and no doubt the greenrider hadn’t picked up on them. He likely hadn’t given the silence that came from him. If he had read the lyrics properly, he would have had a reaction by now and Valerian was still alive so he knew that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t a bad song – especially not for the quality given his superior writing skills – it was just a unique song made for the occasion.

“Don’t go too far after the honorific naming. I know you’ll want to hear the song in its final form and in B’jin’s voice as well.” Veeth still loved his writing and Valerian didn’t want the blue to miss out. He hoped the entire population turned out to marvel at the great duo they made as writer and singer. First they just had to get through dinner, speeches, and receiving a new identity. For two turns Valerian had denied being a bluerider since he was more than that but tonight was all about becoming just that. He would be a bluerider first and if lucky he’d still be a Harper second. In the end, all he really wanted to be was Valerian whom was a bluerider and Harper among other things. Maybe that would be where he felt different. Would he still want his own identity after receiving knots and a new name? Again, he’d find out in a few hours but first he had to get there.

Mounting up, Valerian directed them skyward and Veeth took off, making lazy upward spiralling circles until he reached a height he wanted. It was their last flight as weyrlings, something that Valerian felt should be cherished. It was still something almost innocent and pure. Once he was a full-fledged dragonrider, there would be wing practices and more chores. They would still have freedom but it felt like they were about to step into adulthood and the simple days of youth would be behind them.

At least we will be away from G’rem and his stick soon. That man was a little scary. Veeth chimed in after a few minutes of soaring where the wind currents took them around Katila. Valerian laughed and nodded in agreement. G’rem wasn’t the worst man within the weyr but he wasn’t the most pleasant either. He certainly wouldn’t be missed in their daily routines. Let’s head to the Square now and see him for the final time as his students.

Valerian?

Yeah?

I love you. Valerian smiled and patted Veeth’s neck. He knew his dragon worried over the honorific thanks to how much time was given thinking on it but Valerian couldn’t tell if there was more behind the declaration or not since Veeth was being oddly secretive. Maybe it was nothing more than that and it was only a way to say the given name a final time before they entered into something new. But Veeth would still be Veeth and Valerian, despite a new name, would still be Valerian. They both had to lighten up and the evening’s festivities would be perfect for that. I love you, too, Veeth. Valerian replied as they landed. A hug was given to Veeth’s neck once he dismounted. There wasn’t a point in looking either of them over since even with sitting outside, Valerian still looked good in his trademark angular cut shirt and Veeth shone almost as much as a gold rising with the oiling he had had that afternoon.

You do not wish to be here. I wish you wouldn’t force yourself Khaduceth said with carefully masked confusion. He didn’t understand or approve of the many social conventions that made his bonded so uncomfortable, but there was at least something different about this one.  Talian wasn’t exactly unhappy, but there was a small bit of anxiousness there that tormented Khaduceth like a tiny itch, the sort that wouldn’t have been a bother at all if only he could reach it to scratch.

Calm down Talian replied, for once the calmer of the two. It will only take a minute. I need to at least see him. Khaduceth was right; Talian didn’t exactly want to be there. He didn’t like parties and he didn’t like being social with the Weyr, whom he’d never forgiven for its transgressions against him.  It wasn’t an act of active bitterness, but rather a side effect of who he was. He didn’t like parties. He never had. He especially didn’t like parties with people he didn’t like, no matter how hard they tried to get him to.

It was strange how everyone wanted to be his friend now that he had a dragon. Talian only counted those who’d been his friends before, though. The others didn’t matter. They weren’t real friends; a real friend measured someone’s value in deeds and feelings, not in which groups they were a part of. If someone only wanted to be friends with him because he was in their class or because he had a dragon, well, they weren’t worth his time.

That was why he had to be there. Valerian had always been his friend, before either of them had become a dragonrider and now well after. No matter what happened between them or in their lives independently, they had always been friends.  Tal didn’t want to party and he didn’t care much for most of the company, but he didn’t even bat and eyelash at the prospect of being there for someone who had always been there for him.

Talian traced Veeth’s movements carefully and walked slowly towards the spot where the pretty blue dragon had landed. Fellis was curled politely on his shoulder and Khaduceth stood a few dragonlength’s back, watching with curiosity from a distance.  Khaduceth silently marveled at what he considered selflessness, but upon detecting the arrogant sentiment, Talian just smiled subtly and dismissed it. Khaduceth seemed to think everyone else was a waste of time and that nothing merited even the smallest discomfort of inconvenience for Talian. The healer didn’t agree.

Come on, Khaduceth. Be sweet to them for me Talian urged him silently.

I will the dragon promised.

Talian crept up behind Valerian and cleared his throat. “Val?” he said softly. Fellis let out a soft chirp of accompaniment and fluttered from Talian’s shoulder to Valerian’s. Much like his own bonded, Fellis had become notably less timid and antisocial over time, though neither trait would ever completely vanish. They both liked things a certain way and had a fondness for certain people. Khaduceth had noticed, and Talian could feel the dragon’s amusement in the back of his mind.

It seems that boy has a calming effect on everyone the brown dragon murmured.

Even on you? Talian shot back placidly, catching the dragon off guard. Khaduceth exhaled slowly, then started to pick his way past the slowly assembling crowd and approach.

Talian ignored Khaduceth and smiled at Valerian. “You excited?” he asked gently, folding his hands behind him. His coy smile and a slight hint of smitten embarrassment were visible in the low light, but lacked the overwhelming awkwardness that might have come along were he less composed. He’d had a lot of time to think about his feelings. He remained patiently certain, but he didn’t dare say anything to jeopardize Valerian’s happiness on such an important night. All he wanted right then was to make Valerian happy.

We are late, because you cannot stop preening. The party, our party, has already started and you're changing your shirt again. Stop it. Charath's voice was filled with all the impatience her bonded usually displayed. She would not have been bothered by her bonded's tardiness, except that she found it embarrassing to show up to their own party late. That, and Erisi had spent way too long on getting dressed. He had spent over an hour at the bathing house, and when Charath had touched his mind to check up on him, the idiot had been dozing off. The party was not an evening affair for them, it was an all day trial. When Erisi had gotten to his hut, he had spent even more time idling over clothes and his hair, and when Harac popped out of between to land on his shoulder, he had apparently forgotten to add her into the equation.

So, he was changing again so that his gold flitter would look just as spectacular upon his shoulder. Erisi was dressed in slender black pants, a dark sash with yellow accents tied around his waist, black boots, a beige shirt, and black jacket. Charath was unimpressed, though she had counted herself fortunate that Erisi had stopped preening over himself long enough earlier into the day that he gave her a proper bath and oiling. She looked spectacular, at least she thought so. Erisi would have been fine, if not underwhelming, if he showed up looking as he did at the beginning of the day... his normal self. You're not even listening to me.

'Hair down, or up?' Erisi answered, overly concerned over this small dilemma.

Shut up. A few minutes later and Erisi still hadn't decided, so Charath gave in and made the decision for him. Keep it to the normal style, no one will recognize you otherwise. Oh wait, that'd be a good thing. The Green answered Erisi snidely, which was practically an invitation to bicker amongst themselves.

They proceeded to do so until the landed just outside the Gathering Square. No victor could clearly be determined, as both were certain that their arguments had won out against the other. Erisi rolled his eyes. Charath mentally sighed. Erisi verbally sighed. Charath bumped her head against his back and told him to get his ass going before he didn't show up to the Graduation.

Harac popped back out of between, landing lightly on Erisi's shoulder. She could be a mean spirited firelizard, but when it came to Erisi she was nothing but sweet and docile. Her tail curled loosely around his neck, her long neck extended to look at all the people milling about as Erisi passed by them. The Gold flitter was perfectly content to remain where she was instead of buzzing around with the rest of her species, mostly because she'd be rewarded with food. Erisi had a tendency to absentmindedly feed her anything he didn't want, which was usually stuff firelizards shouldn't eat. It was a miracle he hadn't accidentally fed her something that could actually harm her.

Erisi quickly settled in, securing an abandoned table and a plate of food to snack on. Harac chittered at him, and he obligingly fed her a bite. All that work and you're just going to sit around and pretend you're a Queen dragon, too good for anyone else?

'I'm eating first, and then they'll have speeches and other important, and likewise boring, events. Afterwards I'll be social.

...When you say 'social', do you mean your normal kind of social? The Green asked with dread, knowing that her bonded was destined to embarrass her by being the first and last hookup of the evening.

'I wasn't planning to, but if it discomforts you so much I'll happily change my mind!'

Silute bathed and oiled  Teegarth first and formost. He wanted the blue to be presentable and  comfortable today. Silute of course was a bundle of nerves of course. Graduation what a satisfying and scary time in a riders life.  Are they really ready to move on to the next step and be riders would you stop rubbing so hard Teegarth said softly. I know your nervous but don't be I love you and  we can accomplish anything we wish. Teegarth assured Silute.

Its not just that. Silute said softly.  He had always liked to be in the center of things he didn't understand why he was so nervous now. He stopped scrubbing Teegarth so hard and then  hurried to get dressed himself. He decided to wear dark colors today despite it being like a celebration.

He smiled over at Teegarth as he hurried off to join the other classmates. He wondered what they were thinking.  Giving it more the a brief thought he realized that he didn't know his classmates as well as he thought he should.

Silute listened to Jade chitter in his ear. She didn't know what was up but she knew people were excited and she wanted to be part of it. He reached over and petted her head softly.  After getting some help from Seijin she was being much more behaved now then she was when she hatched.  He was happy to have had him help him with teaching her to basics of behaving and not causing trouble.  So he decided to give her a treat and take her with him. After all how much trouble could she be and he was sure others would take their firelizards as well.

He was never one for parties, especially ones that pointed out that other people had accomplished what he hadn't yet, but he felt that he should still come, and at least pretend to be happy and sociable. There was always the risk of punishment for not showing up to congratulate the others, or risk of punishment for still not having impressed, or risk of punishment for his whole cover being blown that he didn't ever wish to impress. Or what if someone accused him of... His mind was racing, as usual. He entered alongside others, took a place at the table, and began filling up his plate.

He nodded politely where appropriately, and smiled and nodded while conversations were going on around him. He tried his hardest to avoid eye contact, act natural and stay out of conversations. That was the last thing that he wanted.

The evening had gone pretty smoothly so far. S'kef was pleased, but admittedly bored. He knew these parties had plenty of significance and he didn't necessarily mind the festivities, but being stuck at them was definitely an unforeseen downside of his new post. He sighed and straightened himself in his seat, brown eyes scanning the crowd. At least everyone seemed to be relaxed. That was a nice change; Katila had been riddled with too much sorrow and tension over the turns, too many bad memories and unhappy people. D'ren had been right when he fretted about their differences tearing them apart. At least the old fool was right about something.

I'll be speaking soon. Are there any more coming?

Not currently

S'kef nodded and laced his fingers together in front of him. Very well. Better now than never.  He said nothing to Tsuen as he rose to his feet and lifted one hand, calling for the crowd's attention. He caught a sour expression coming from Tsuen. Undoubtedly she was annoyed that he'd begun without consenting, but fuck her.

"Good evening," S'kef said, trying not to smirk with self-satisfaction as his voice carried over the crowd. It almost excited him, how they fell silent at his word! "On behalf of myself and the leadership of Katila, I would like to welcome everyone to this evening's festivities. Tonight, we're celebrating a very special moment in the lives of some of our young riders. Their graduation not only represents their own success, but our hope for the future," he said as he motioned to some of the familiar graduates in the mass before him.

"Before we get underway, I want to take a moment to thank the graduating class for their hard work under less than ideal circumstances. The last few turns have been difficult for all of us, but I personally believe your success may stand as hope for all of us. I know many of you were placed in a compromising position by my predecessor, but as far as I am concerned, we are all in this together." He couldn't help but cast a glance at Tsuen and smirk, his unspoken pleasure all but obvious on his face. He didn't care who knew. That wench's days in her throne were numbered.

He wasn't exactly lying. They were all stuck in this hell together, and even if he didn't want to be best friends with all the little bastards, he preferred a single faction of dragonriders to a horrible, hate-based division. Good thing there were plenty of people more hateable than himself for the northerners to focus their ire on. Tsuen and D'ren came to mind. S'kef couldn't have wished for better targets. Let them suffer and rot for their terrible mistakes!

"However, before we begin the festivities, I do have a few policy changes to announce," he called out. He unfolded a sheet of paper and held it up to read from it, as if carefully reviewing well thought out notes. He cleared his throat once more, and Tyrrisath growled at one of the young greens in B'jin's new class to hurry up and be quiet.

What stupid business. S'kef was so sick of the stories about factional conflict in his Weyr. He took a moment to think over their last reports, and it brought an ugly scowl to his face. Dragonriders were quick to complain about northerners refusing to adjust, but they were just as guilty of singling them out for the very harassment that made them resent the Weyr. It was ridiculous. All it did was make everyone weaker, and S'kef was sick of it. How could they expect to accomplish great things while standing ready to pounce on one another's throats? He couldn't exactly scream 'grow the fuck up' at them all, so this would have to suffice.

"One of the traditions we will be honoring tonight is an old one, but one that I feel has run it's course. By my decree, newly Impressed candidates will now select their honorific at the time of Impression, rather than receiving it at graduation," he said. "A dragonrider should be acknowledged as a dragonrider from the moment of Impression. This is the defining moment where a man becomes a dragonrider; that is when he should be acknowledged." There should be no transitional period where the young rider felt trapped between two worlds. S'kef remembered being frustrated at his status as no 'real' rider back when he was a weyrling, and the effect was even worse here. Best to be rid of it. He didn't bother to explain himself, though. He didn't feel like going off on some poetic rant about the identities of dragonriders...not when he still had one announcement left to go.

"Secondly, from this day forward, female dragonriders bonded to green and blue dragons shall no longer contract their names. Woman riders are encouraged to draw from the examples of goldriders and continue to use their birth names, in accordance with feminine virtue." Stupid women. They were already wasting a good fighting dragon. They could at least not pretend to be real dragonriders.

"Weyrlings from either of Krypth's clutches may declare their honorific after the graduating class tonight, or they may report to their weyrling master in private. Female riders are expected to relinquish use of their honorifics as once," he said, closing his speech with all the militaristic grace he usually carried. He saluted the graduating class and thanked the crowd before seating himself, pleased with the job he'd done.

Things were going to be different now, and he wanted to make sure that everyone knew it.

Valerian never expected Talian at public gatherings. His friend wasn’t the type to be social and even with Impressing, he still wasn’t fond of the weyr or the inhabitants so it didn’t seem fair to expect him to show up. It was why he had gone to see Talian before the gathering to celebrate Khaduceth and his clutchmates knowing the Healer wouldn’t want to go to even that. Seeing Talian now earned a small smile as Valerian turned to greet his friend and gave a shrug. “Kind of.” That was about all he could say on the matter. He hadn’t fully worked out how he felt about the graduation and which emotions were stronger and he wasn’t sure if Talian would want to hear all of it aloud as he worked it out.

Instead, Valerian went with telling Talian about the one part he was definitely excited about since it was going to be the talk of the weyr for at least a day after, perhaps longer if nothing else happened that needed to spark the gossips. “You should definitely stick around for B’jin singing a song I wrote though. Sit where you can see him… and R’nd. You might like the show.” He gave an unusually wicked smirk that showed off he was up to something and Talian was now the only other person to know it. B’jin was likely going to kill him later but it’d be worth it for the reaction the lyrics caused.

“Thanks for coming out to see me,” Valerian added before he forgot his manners entirely. His mother and sisters loved to enforce those on him and even through his years of journeying and now down in Katila, he did try to remember to use them when appropriate with people he actually could tolerate. He was about to say more but a hush had fallen over the crowd and Valerian saw S’kef standing and about to start a speech. He frowned, having thought it wouldn’t start so quickly and without the graduates up on stage to be shown off or whatever it was they did for such things.

The frown only increased the more the Weyrleader spoke. If he wasn’t sure about his feelings before, Valerian was definitely filled with mixed emotions now. In one way, he could understand the change in when an honorific was received but in another, that announcement just defeated a large portion of the night’s purpose and even overshadowed the weyrlings about to graduate. There were two other classes without honorifics and now they would be running around to share their new names with everyone when it was supposed to be his class’ big moment. Valerian wasn’t one to crave the spotlight and all of the attention but he was still a Harper that loved to perform and didn’t like his talent and hard work overlooked. Far be it from him to say what a Weyrleader should do but couldn’t he have waited at least a day before making such an announcement?

“Sounds like tonight is your big night as well.” Valerian felt bad for Talian; no doubt his friend had realized he would have two turns to come to terms about changing his name and being counted as a true dragonrider and now he was being told he had to change his name now. Clearly S’kef wasn’t trying to win a popularity contest. Then again, the rule against women likely earned him a lot of points from older male riders.

Rage.

It wasn't a feeling B'run was used to feeling but at S'kef's announcement that female rider's would be stripped of their honorific... A growl bubbled in his throat and he rose up from his seat. R'ana was as much a rider as he was. To have her... Mocked in such a fashion! To say that she was any less than him because she was a woman... He'd seen her. He'd known her. She cared for Shanith as he cared for Olemuth and the only difference was that he had a cock between his legs and she'd birthed their child. He didn't know why he felt so protective of her - Or the other greenriders or the women in general. It didn't make sense to him. But he was. Maybe it was because he cared about the woman herself. Maybe because his few friends were greenriders and woman. Yet here he was, a bronzerider... How strange things play out.

"Stripped of their honorific?" He called. Somewhere Olemuth bellowed a roar, feeling his rider's anger and vocalizing it as only a dragon could. B'run could feel the eyes turning on him. He could feel men scowling in his direction. He knew he wouldn't win himself any points with them. He didn't care. Maybe the fact that he was several cups into the evening had something to do with it. True enough, his words were slurred and he paused to shove his hair out of his face. "Why? Whats the point in that? They'd fly righ' 'longside us if'n Thread fell." He swayed slightly and promptly braced himself by widening his stance.

Do not start a fight you cannot win.
Only askin' questions, love. Ain't fair.
I'm letting Shanith know you're being stupid. She'll tell R'ana.
She won't be R'ana if I don' be stupid.

But still the man stood, as proud as he could when he was tipsy and distracted by speaking to Olemuth. The bronze was right, though. He was being an idiot. Calling the 'weyrleader' out in front of everyone? He was asking to be lashed or worse. But no one else had spoken up. Someone had to!

Talian's eyes brightened. "It's no problem, Val," he said tenderly, turning his head just slightly to keep his adoring eyes at least somewhat modest. "And it looks like you've just given me a reason to stay. I suppose this isn't really so bad," he said, glancing quickly around and surveying those around them. "B'jin has a lovely voice, and I've always loved your music. It sounds like a fine evening."

The idea of sticking around for the party didn't sound so awful as it usually did. Maybe he was finally growing comfortable. He smiled as Fellis purred. The little beast could sense his happiness.

As can I Khaduceth said, pleasantly surprised but willing to be charitable. He walked over, carefully but proudly meandering between the people weaving around him. The dragon settled himself on his haunches beside Veeth, whom he greeted with a low rumble, aloof but not friendly. The brown dragon regarded the pair of humans for a few long moments. My rider cares deeply for yours he said to Veeth. The blue's conversational nature had never particularly hit home with Khaduceth, but he didn't dislike the blue and he didn't go out of his way to snub him. Tonight, the brown dragon was especially at peace with his blue cousin.

Talian reached out to pat Khaduceth's foreleg. "Looks like S'kef is about to speak..." he said lowly, eyeing the older brownrider with mistrust as he spoke.

Talian listened quietly through the speech. He wrinkled his nose at all the implications, frustrated by the disappointment that he sensed in Valerian and disgusted by the demand that he change his own name. Val was right to assume that Talian was displeased. He'd been dreading the surrender of his birth name, but after a moment of pale-faced outrage, he realized that this was probably better. At least this way he could declare it privately tomorrow instead of suffer through a humiliating ceremony. Shards. Maybe it was some sort of blessing in disguise, he thought grimly.

That at least took the sting off of it.  He grimaced just the same and looked to his friend.
"What an asshole," he said lightly, almost feisty, though he kept him comment low and under his breath. He winced a bit when the nearby bronzerider burst out in protest, voicing what Talian assumed many must feel. He didn't much care about the women's honorifics, but honorifics in general seemed insulting to him. He didn't want to be part of the dragonrider club. He didn't want one at all. But he tried to keep in mind that there were those who did.

He looked to Val and frowned. "This sucks," he said indignantly. His expression softened just slightly as he turned to Val, waiting patiently to see if he had any thoughts he wished to share. Without really thinking, Talian wiggled in for a meek hug.

S'kef slowly turned back to the crowd, his attention caught not by B'run's shouting, but by the bellow of his dragon. How frustrating that the beast was a bronze; Tyrrisath didn't have the instinctive weight to shut the stupid beast up. It would have taken another bronze for that. S'kef thought he sensed some resentment lurking in the back of Tyrrisath's mind for a moment, but it was brief. Both knew that S'kef held no animosity towards his dragon for being a brown. He simply refused to be chained by that fact any more. Situations like this would remain a pain, though.

They'd fly righ' 'longside us if'n Thread fell

S'kef rose to his feet and smiled slowly, looking straight at B'run as he considered the words. Then, he maneuvered around the table and started to walk closer. "Perhaps they will," S'kef said as he approached B'run, loud enough for B'run and others nearby to hear, but not loud enough for the entire crowd. Most of them were paying no attention to the exchange. A few had taken note of the Weyrleader's oddly quiet and subtle response, but those who did either joined in the jeering or moved away.

"I suggest you let it go, bronzerider," S'kef said as he neared the other man, crossing his arms and looking at him skeptically. "This decision is for the best." A smug smile crossed his face, dressed up to appear friendly and good-natured.

R’nya was standing off to the side, where most of his gold candidate friends were collected, listening idly to Kahleena giggle about how exciting it was and her own dreamy sighs about graduating. The bronzerider wasn’t particularly paying any attention to them, though he nodded when required by their questions and arched his eyebrow at all the right times. They were remarkably easy to appease, while not paying a lick of attention. That thought amused Xyreith, who spat out several cruel comments that made R’nya inclined to roll his eyes at the creature though he refrained with a soft sigh.

When the Weyrleader rose, R’nya hushed the girls he was standing amongst with a pointed look, most of them more than happy to obediently quieten and set a good example for both themselves and the other women in the crowd. Nodding to them in a pleased manner though it didn’t echo onto his face, R’nya turned his attention upon the brownrider. There was no discernible expression on the man’s face as he listened to the words S’kef was speaking, bright, stormy coloured eyes expressionless as he watched the Weyrleader move back to his seat. A glance was given to Tsuen when he heard the woman mutter something under her breath to Jada, but no move to intervene was made; S’kef had both women well enough in hand and R’nya had taken on the rest to keep in line.

Then, there was the expected trouble. R’nya hushed the girls with a quick glare, the unexpected expression on his face likely doing far more of the work than he anticipated. As S’kef stepped forward to deal with the rider who was questioning him – both drunkenly and stupidly – R’nya stepped forward pointedly too, his arms crossing over his chest as he frowned across the crowd and directly towards where B’run was standing. He didn’t bother to follow S’kef, feeling his place was right where he was, and he had no desire to make a scene; the young man had no opinion to present, just a simple fact: S’kef was Weyrleader, and he would be respected. It was unlikely B’run would notice him at all, but he was about to take note of the Weyrleader, at any rate, as R’nya took control of the emotional dragon.

Xyreith.
Yes, sir?
Shut him up.
With pleasure.

The great bronze was nearly purring with pleasure as he received his order, hot red eyes turning dangerously upon the other bronze dragon, Xyreith’s mind crashed forcefully into that of Olemuth, the younger dragon putting as much of his forceful and naturally commanding personality into the assault as he could. Be still, you fool! The bronze made no visual display of his attack, beyond the hot, angry colour of his rapidly swirling eyes. While he wouldn’t have minded the attention that would have been called upon him, Xyreith was aware of R’nya’s desire to remain out of the spotlight; he was backing up his Weyrleader, not attempting to outshine him!

R’nya considered it very much a part of his duty to his Weyrleader to step in and help control the situation when the other man’s dragon proved incapable of doing so; instinct was a powerful foe and while the riders were capable of stepping beyond the stereotypes the dragons created, R’nya was quite aware of the limits the Weyrleader’s dragon was forced to work within. Xyreith, however, saw it as little more than a win-win opportunity; a chance to bully another bronze into submission, while sneering mockingly at Tyrrisath, who was incapable of rising above his own lowly colouration.

B'run sighed. A heavy, tired, sigh. He shook his head, giving a remorseful look. "Yeah," he began, dragging his fingers through his beard. "I don' think that's goin' t'happen." Already he was mentally bracing himself for a punishment that was unlikely to come. He'd done it enough as a child, he knew the routine even if it had been many years. A smile tugged at his lips. "Brownrider," he added.

The man looked tired. But if S'kef was going to be the first to throw rank around, he'd gladly step up to the plate. B'run locked eyes with the brownrider, looking many things but afraid wasn't one of them. He stood confident and ready, which was rare enough for the aloof and leery man. "You don' gotta deal with the women yer pissin' off. I do." R'ana's reaction alone was something he was preparing himself for Jisralna's was likely to be much more timid if she had one at all.

"We're all in this t'gether, the way I see it. An' yer tryin' t'make it so that ain't so. That don't sit well with me." He set one hand on his belt, hooking his thumb. Blue eyes scanned the crowd, doing his tipsy best to make note of who was still watching the engagement and who had already moved on. This was supposed to be a happy celebration. so much for that! At least he'd gotten in a few drinks before he'd decided to start shit.

Olemuth had remained, primarily, calm after his initial outburst. As soon as Xyrieth had spoken he let loose another roar. He was quiet by nature, content to let others lead when he did not... But his rider was taking a stand. He unfurled his wings and waggled his head, eyes swirling red. Perhaps B'run had finally decided to act like a bronzerider. He had shitty timing.

They tell me to cease. They try to make me.
Might be a good idea.
And leave you to stand alone? Never. Do I come get you?
Not yet, love. Not yet.

Escape was still an option, if S'kef decided to bring back the lash. Frankly, the idea of being whipped scared B'run more than the idea of all these eyes on him. Olemuth huffed air from his nostrils while B'run stood calmly, muscles tense and ready.

I do not obey you, youngling. You do not lead us. 'Quiet' did not mean 'submissive.' And the burly bronze turned the mental nudging back on his younger counterpart. He folded his wings and stood proudly, waiting for his rider to be through with his stupid plan, eyes swirling a slow red.

Valerian had reached his limit as he watched the idiots at play. He always had an opinion but it wasn’t always voiced aloud, especially in a large crowd and especially when that large crowd was assembled in part for him. But this was the final straw. The graduation was more or less in shambles and it hadn’t even started. He was a bit vain and a bit shallow, not as much so as other blueriders or Erisi, but Valerian wanted his ceremony and party and now it was close to not happening because of a drunken fool who couldn’t even say a single word with clarity. Was that the alcohol or just a natural effect of being stupid?

“Forgive me, Tal,” he spoke softly with a small glimpse to his friend and looked back to the Weyrleader and the troublemaker. Valerian was ready to share his opinion and he stormed his way through the crowd, leaving Veeth to croon after him, eyes swirling with distress. Then I hope he still cares for him deeply after he gets in trouble. Veeth wasn’t too confident in what would happen. He was proud of his human for standing up for something he was interested in but he still worried it wouldn’t end well.

“You’re ruining the graduation, in case your drunken stupidity hadn’t let you notice,” Valerian shot at B’run, not knowing who the man was and certainly not caring. “This night isn’t about you and it shouldn’t have been about honorifics of other weyrlings and women,” halfway through the statement green eyes fell to S’kef and Valerian glared at the Weyrleader. He didn’t like the man and even had a bit of fear for him since watching the lashing he had given B’jin, but Valerian was annoyed and sometimes common sense left even the smartest of men. No doubt B’jin was having a panic attack and R’nd was going to have a fainting greenrider in his hands soon. That would be fun to see! Well, assuming he wasn’t about to be decked, lashed, or banned from the gather.

“You should have waited until the next Hatching to mention it or even tomorrow. Even after my class received their honorifics would have been fine. You’ve taken away one of the two things I was looking forward to tonight, Weyrleader. Now you also inspired lug headed idiots to voice opinions no one should be caring about tonight. Oh and I would tell you my name so you know who to send J’ver after to keep an eye on but I currently don’t have one since my dragon was going to give me my name later tonight.”

Having said his peace, Valerian took a deep breath and turned to walk away. He did, however, take a moment to stomp with all his might on B’run’s foot like a spoiled young woman who was having a hissy fit. Valerian wasn’t a fighter; he liked his hands as they were for writing and playing the guitar so he certainly didn’t want to break anything on a thick skull. He also didn’t care how sissy his foot stomping made him look since it would hopefully cause a bit of discomfort against the oaf that had made a scene during what was supposed to be a joyous occasion. He was a Harper! He loved gathers and good times and while he should have been used to Katlian gathers turning into brawls by now, Valerian was trying to save his night still.

A big man was talking, a speech. Formal, polite, yada yada yada political bullshit. And women couldn't use honorifics anymore? He visibly winced as he imagined what sort of backlash this would have. You couldn't talk anything away from a woman without backlash; might as well be trying to take a meal away from a poisonous, angry snake with rabies on steriods. This would not be good, not for the women, or for the collective weyr that would eat their dissension.

Some of the men didn't seem to like it either, and a small verbal scuffle seemed to have broken out. He wanted to get up, run, and hide. But where could he go? He wanted to get away from these guys, that was for sure. But he felt trapped, with no where to go.

He stood up violently, as if his legs had been forced to stand. As he did so, he hit the table, and it shook. A cup or two spilled over. A drumstick rolled off its plate.

A glass fell off the edge of the table and shattered.

He gingerly padded over to an empty seat farther away from the empty men and sat. He hoped his distraction would get everyone to calm down, without earning him lashes. He tried to keep an air of emptiness about him, as if he had no thoughts at all and was just a rag doll.

Latelatelate, they were late!  Shanith didn't understand what her rider was so upset about.  Sure, going rock hunting after R'ana had cleaned her up and put Shanith in her favored neck band and wristlets probably hadn't been wise, but she had only been slightly dirtied, and she didn't know why R'ana was so upset about having to reclean her dragon.  Shanith had a gift of her own now for each of the dragons!

R'ana came though, even if she came late.  She knew Teegarth, respected Valerian and tried to avoid Erisi.  Charath was shaping up to be entirely too good at instigating and R'ana didn't want Shanith learning from her.  She had gifts for all the new dragon riders, though, tucked away in her bag.

Shanith pranced around as they hit the gather square, and R'ana was grateful for B'jin's knowledge of her lack of ability to carry a note in a wheelbarrow with someone holding up the other end of it.  It meant she would never be asked to perform.

She watched Shanith wing off to join the dragons, chattering about Olemuth having found a patch of sunlight he swore was large enough for a bronze and a green.  Shaking her head, she looked around for her friends, and the weyrlings, excited.  New riders...Impression was the start of a new life, but this, graduation...It meant the riders were trained, and had survived the training.  It was a celebration that they were here to stay and well earned party.  Oh she couldn't wait to give her gifts to the new dragonriders, she loved giving people things, and graduating was a perfect excuse.

She headed towards Valerian first, detouring for someone else when she saw Talian and Khaduceth talking to him.  There would be time to wish him well later.  A moment with a friend...that was a rare thing here.  She would let him have it.

S'kefs getting up to speak interrupted her words and she turned to face him, R'ana feeling Sahnith stilling at the back of her mind.  I don't think he's just wishing our new riders well.

Not even S'kef would steal this event from the new riders.  They've worked too hard to earn this night for him to steal it.  I'm sure he just wants to wish them luck.  Shanith's uncertainty gnawed at her, and R'ana turned to start heading to soothe her dragon before she did something stupid.  The annoucement stilled her.  Choosing an honorific was a dragon's job, not the rider's!  And on Impression?  There was too much on a newly bonded's mind to choose a new name on top of all else.

It got worse.  Pain lanced through R'ana, stilling her.  Bands tightened around her chest, and she fought just to breathe.  No.  She wouldn't react here.  Not in front of the whole damn weyr.  Shanith's mental shriek tore through her.  NO!  They will not take your name!

R'ana's mental reach to calm her was isntinctive, but it was halted when she heard Olemuth roar and B'run speak.  Shanith raged in the back of her mind.  What on earth was he doing?!  S'kef was the leader!  You didn't just...Except B'run was.  And Shanith confirmed her feeling that he was doing it partly on her behalf.

She narrowed her eyes and strode forward.  Shanith?  Warn Olemuth that I'm about to be stupid.  B'run won't stand alone in this.  She began making her way through the crowd, polite at first, then apply her elbow to ribs and midsections when people just wouldn't move.  She made her way to the center of the crowd.

Valerian beat her to it.  R'ana went to B'run's other side, touching his shoulder with fingers that shook.  Rebellion was a new trick for her.  She never spoke up like this, not ever!  S'kef would flay the skin off her bones for this!  Worse, she knew she couldn't win.  S'kef couldn't back down, not publicly.

Valerian's words caused her to temper her words.  Unfortunately, he was right, and the timing alone meant that she couldn't simply say what she wanted to say.  "Weyrleader.  What are you going to take next?  You took the spotlight from the graduating class.  You've taken a dragon's right to name their rider, and to focus solely on their rider after impressing to them instead of worrying about honorifics.  Shards, you've taken my own honorific and you're talking about taking away the purpose of a dragonrider because they chose a woman.  What's next?  What gives you the right?"  She struggled to keep her tone respectful, though it was a losing battle.

Panic clawed at her mind, equal parts fury and pain more than she could handle.  Shanith added her own roar to Olemuth's and R'ana struggled a bit for air, refusing to give into the panic attack she knew was waiting for her.  Not now.  Her vision tunneled on S'kef, and she added in a voice that shook, apologizing solely to the weyrlings whose graduation she was helping disrupt, "I apologize for speaking so on what should be a joyous night, but I need to know.  What are you taking next, weyrleader?"

A glass shattered about then and R'ana jumped a bit, reacting as if struck, but stood her ground.  She didn't dare take her attention off S'kef and B'run, worried about both.  Worried more for B'run, and worried about what exactly S'kef would do next.  Shanith reared up, flaring her wings in agitation.  She would take off to get R'ana soon, whether asked to or not.

The evening had started out so charming!

Kahleena had spent far too much time bathing, before spending even more time digging up the dress she'd somehow managed to convince Tsuen to make for her. The woman was certifiable, but she knew how to put a dress together! It was the most beautiful thing Kahleena had ever owned, and the girl was still in awe of it. With a light, summer skirt falling to the ground, and her feet covered with little summer slippers, Kahleena felt very much a proper lady. The top portion of the dress was pulled tight with a loosely tied off corset - enhancing her waist and bust without constricting her ability to breathe. A low neckline - for her! - allowed the barest edges of her collarbone to be visible. Long, belled sleeves fell past her fingers. The material a deep blue, it was worked with golden stitching in a similar tone to the swirling shades of Okalinath's hide.

Her hair was a fluttering mess around Kahleena's face, the girl never bothering before to play with it, and waving off attempts by the other young women. She preferred it lose and didn't care that it was tangled in freshly washed waves because she has t brushed it. Who would care? She didn't, Okalinath didn't. It was fine!

She hd been on the edge of the gathering with Rhaedaly, Mevrit, and the other gold candidates, wriggling with excitement and throwing a teasing comment at R'nya about how she expected to be danced with that night! She'd have never been so bold with any other man, but R'nya's expected response of an amused eyebrow was received and Kahleena giggles again.

Then he was sushing them, and glaring at them and Kahleena withdrew in on herself, pulling away from sight and in her own mind vanishing from the conflict. Her hands wrung as she fretted, huge brown eyes staring around in terror at what was happening. It was a night for celebration! It was a night to have fun and wear lovely clothes and to dance with some R'nya approved riders!

So why were they fighting? Why were they making a scene? Weyrleader skef could do what he wanted! He was Weyrleader! He was a strong man with a firm stance and why was that woman standing up to him?! Kahleena gasped and her hand shot out, clinging with desperate fingers to Rhaedalyn's arm as R'nya strode forward and Xyreith exploded with a terrifying roar.

I am here. You are well. Breathe, my love. Okalinath's gentle voice was reassuring, but it didn't halt the sudden terrified tears any more than Tsuen snapping at her irritably did. The woman was getting far too much pleasure out of the turn of events!

Another stupid party. Tsuen was less than enthused as she dressed herself, snarling to herself under her breath about the stretch marks and extra weight she was still home to even after all the time that had passed since birthing D'ren's useless spawn. Worthless child would have been better off drowned at birth like a green Wher. She was as ugly, and just as useful. Worthless child!

The saving grace of the Graduation party, and even the upcoming Hatching was the fact that most of the young women came to her, begging the Weyrwlman to make them a beautiful dress. Tsuen wasn't stupid - she new the brats all thought she was a nutty old bag. As a result, she had carefully selected whom to make a dress for, picking those she felt would be most easy to move to her side of the fence. Tsuen already believed she had Jada firmly in hand, and adding the other stupid gold riding whore was clearly on her list. Several of the candidates were also being approached.

The cunt bronzerider was a pain in Tsuen's arse though. She wanted that cunt dead. Hallow, vicious eyes were set on the man, before shifting to S'kef when he stood up suddenly. Useless bastard thought he was all that. He wasn't even a true Weyrleader; just a pompous prick that was too big for his tight little panties. Tsuen sneered visibly as he stood up to speak, her gaze shifting once more to glare at R'nya when the man hushed her goldies. Stupid, obnoxious bastard! She glared death at him, but was pointedly ignored; Tsuen fumed.

Roaring, yelling, a drunken fool taking on S'kef. Suddenly the entire evening looked much more interesting! Tsuen's poisonous expression melted away into one of smug amusement as she watched some bronzerider not worthy of a name being remembered step up and prove they weren't all ball-less brown nosing fools. No, this one was a ballsy fool! Tsuen smirked.

Gugaroth wishes to know if M'bal should step forward? Nirinath's gentle voice swept through Tsuen's mind like a warm summer breeze and age shuddered. Don't be a fool. Let them make a scene. I do not want him involved. Understood! Nirinath responded mildly that she did, before relaying for M'bal to stand down. She wasn't sure what he had hoped to achieve; but his support for her rider was not doubted by the gold dragon.

Shall I stop the dragons? her tone was more questioning than matter of fact, and Tsuen crushed her suggestion with an iron fist. Don't you dare! Tsuen was having far too much fun to have her goody two shoes fucking dragon step in and end it!

Standing up, her own long gown swirling around her feet, the smiling Tsuen walked pleasantly over to join S'kef, shooting R'nya another poisoned look as she passed him. She was incapable of reading his expression. Coming to a halt beside S'kef, Tsuen smiled sweetly, ignoring the weyrlings toe-squishing move on the bronzerider.

"Come now, gentlemen. Surely we can handle this like adults?" She flashed a girlish smile at B'run. "Now is hardly the time for such theatrics!"

I want to speak to this one later. He will be perfect.

Of course, Tsuen. Nirinath sighed, before her mind was reaching for the bronze. Calm him, please. She would speak to him later. her tone was part command, and riddled with regret. Involvement with her rider would not end well.

Phone tag. Please excuse the awful auto-corrections.

What an odd turn of events. S'kef was actually surprised by the large amount of opposition; he expected with the evening's planned festivities, people would be less eager to start fights. But what could he really expect from Katilans? The brownrider instead found himself a bit taken aback, momentarily unsure of how to deal with the sudden rush of angry faces approaching him, but it was nothing he thought he couldn't handle. Setbacks happened. Dealing with setbacks was what mattered. He simply continued to stare cold at B'run, expression stony and unchanging, while he listened to first the sharp words of Valerian, and then R'ana.

When Tsuen approached and spoke her honeyed words, S'kef broke out into a smile. Just die already, whore. "Indeed! This can be worked out," he said, turning his attention first to Valerian right as the young man turned. Naturally, S'kef was indignant and unamused by the young man's foolish bravado, but an angry weyrling was the least of his worries for the time being. If anything, his time as Weyrleader had taught him to pick his battles, rather than charging at every little insult with his horns down.

"Be calm, bluerider," S'kef replied to Val, tone even and pleasant in spite of his inner disgust. "You'll have your party. The intention was never to take your special moment from you, my boy. I believe I'll be asking these troublemakers to step off to the side with me so we may discuss this issue like adults," he said, gaze shifting back to B'run and then to R'ana. That was probably the most disgusting one of the lot.

"Tsuen, you may leave us. I believe there is a party to tend to, and a graduating class to receive their knots. Please see to it that the festivities are properly begun, and we'll put this ugly business behind us. R'nya?" The last name was shouted, prompting his former wingleader to approach. S'kef glanced towards him and narrowed his eyes, face briefly contorting with malice. "Would you be so kind as to escort these two with me? I would like to speak to them in private..No need to disrupt the party any more than we already have," he said smoothly. Shards, how he wanted to tell them off. Shards! He wanted so badly to put them in their place, his hands would have trembled if he didn't keep them folded neatly behind him. Insolent, know-nothing whers!

"B'run and R-"

Ravana...

"-Ravana, would you step this way with us, please?"

Let's move the heavy drama to a new thread :3 I'll start her up here in a few minutes

Wow, that happened fast. Fellis creeled in distress and winked back to Talian's shoulder, nosing his bonded's cheek in search of comfort. Talian gave the creature a gentle pat on the back and watched with pale-faced concern as Val stomped off to confront the Weyrleader and the unknown bronzerider. Tal couldn't help but wince. Damn, if Valerian didn't have balls right now.

I should help him he thought feebly, though he wasn't sure what he would do. Even so, he felt his feet moving forward. He walked cautiously towards the scene, watching with worried eyes as Valerian spoke and then turned on the older men. Talian was relieved that his friend seemed to have escaped unscathed, but he flew to the bluerider's side just the same.

"Come on, Val...forget about them," Talian urged softly, nervously attaching himself to the bluerider's arm. It didn't occur to him until moments afterwards that the gesture might not be wanted, so with a soft smile, he gently excused himself. As far as Talian was concerned, S'kef and all the others could go fuck themselves. Val put up with an awful lot out of a lot of people, he deserved something nice for a change. The healer's stubborn expression lingered for a moment as he walked along, trying to think of what he could do to improve the situation, but he realized any major efforts would just look desperate. He and Valerian had always gotten along well with silent companionship, and by now Val certainly knew that the healer was on his side. Talian settled down a little, exhaling slowly as he cast a soft and reassuring look to his friend, and simply fell into place beside him. He would let Val decide where they went, and he would follow.

The whole problem with the announcement was S'kef. Surprisingly, Erisi wasn't even remotely phased by the news. Sure, it was one sharding party dampener, but Erisi didn't care about poor women's rights. He didn't even really care that all the new Weyrlings now had to choose their honorifics on the same night that he finally got his. It was almost as if the new Weyrlings had skipped all of the effort Erisi had gone through to earn his name. But, whatever, he was still in a remotely good mood before all hell broke loose.

Valerian was speaking up! That took Erisi by surprise, because usually it was the ornery greenrider who was rising to every bait laid out before him. Of course, Erisi couldn't blame Valerian, he actually understood his friend's ire. However, Valerian was the one who usually went with the flow. It took a lot to get the other Harper worked up enough to so loudly voice his opinion. Erisi had only managed it on a very rare occasion - Valerian did seem to have limitless patience with him. He sort of expected everyone else to get up to stupid drama, so R'ana (he had no idea what to call her now, nor did he really care) and B'run being ruffled did not even remotely interest him.

'Wanna see if he's okay?' he asked Charath, which was probably the most caring gesture Erisi was capable of making.

He is with Talian. I think he will be fine, even when he's miffed he's far more levelheaded than you. The green dragon came close to touching her thoughts with Valerian's, but pulled away at the last moment. Charath didn't really talk to anybody. She was not a social butterfly of a dragon, and quite frankly, like her bonded, she did not like anybody.

'Thanks... and fuck you.'

Erisi turned his attention back towards S'kef, determined to keep his mouth shut when it came to the Weyrleader after his last brush with the man. Before things could escalate too highly, S'kef rounded up the most vocal of the protestors and began to lead them away. Erisi was mildly surprised that he felt so relieved that Valerian hadn't been called along with them. The newly graduated Weyrling hated to deal with S'kef himself, so he certainly didn't want his friend to do the same.

'Remind me to talk with him later.'

I doubt you have talking in mind.

Of course, the one time he tried to be serious, Charath picked right up on it and had to ruin it for him. Whatever, he probably wouldn't do much talking in the end anyways.

Seijin had been hanging back in the shadows watching the festivities. He  knew a few of the people here and noticed B'run  and started to make his way over to him  but ended up stopping short hearing the weyrleaders announcement. He noticed the B'run looked upset even at this distance and clearly he had been drinking again.

Course Seijin backed away when he saw s'kef heading over to B'run. He still was wary of the man hearing how he dealt with people and that rumors have it that he isn't very nice.  Seijin decided it was wiser not to get involved in this. He was to worried about what would happen and he could hear Araith in his head she seemed worried herself about him getting into a mess.

For Araith's good he would stay out of it. He looked around again and saw Talian with another of the graduates. He waved but didn't go over after all it looked like Talian was calming his friend down as well cause he had joined in.  He most likely wouldn't appreciate the interruption.

Rhaedalyn was beside herself with worry. The weyrleader had made a shocking announcement that some didn’t seem to agree with though why they didn’t was just as shocking. He was in charge and it wasn’t like he was changing the way people lived or asking them to do something they didn’t want to do. Well, she supposed changing a name when it wasn’t wanted could qualify for that but it wasn’t like he asked people to change their profession, give up riding their dragon, or even cut their hair! It wasn’t the announcement itself that worried Rhaedalyn but the reactions of a few people. The bronzerider that seemed intoxicated should have stayed quiet. He was so close to getting punished in some way, she just knew it! After all, S’kef had punched Indivara for attacking a Candidate so what would he do for a man that challenged his rule?

R’ana stepping up as well was what truly increased the worry. Why would a woman put herself into such danger over a name? Surely her given name was pretty! Rhaedalyn loved her name and even her nickname that so many used was pretty. She couldn’t imagine herself with anything else which of course meant her mind wandered down a path of trying to come up with an honorific despite that being banned as of minutes ago. R’lyn wasn’t too bad, she decided before making herself focus on reality and not such an unlady-like oddity.

Valerian worried her just as much as R’ana since he was a weyrling about to graduate and a bluerider as well. He shouldn’t challenge a brownrider and a bronzerider! She could understand why he was upset though. The night was meant for him and his classmates and Rhaedalyn would be upset as well if her party was taken from her because someone was drunk and wanted to start a fight. Still, he didn’t have to add to the conflict!

Rhaedalyn was starting to feel weak in the knees and was thankful for her floor length pink dress she had tossed together for the night. It wasn’t nearly as fancy as Kahleena’s dress and a quick look confirmed the stitching was extremely superior to her own but Rhaedalyn loved her little dress all the same – especially now that it covered up the fact that she was about to pass out from stressing over the potential fighting. Maybe if she angled herself just right she would swoon right into R’nya’s arms. If she was going to faint, she might as well have a comfortable landing! Then again, that would be hard to do with R’nya trying to calm the situation down and then being called to escort the party to the side.

So she couldn’t faint; she could manage that. Well, she thought she could! Maybe a distraction was in order so her curious gaze would stop following her friend, the weyrleader, and the upset group. What could distract her though? What could distract everyone? It was clear she wasn’t the only one constantly stealing glances at S’kef which meant the graduating class was still being ignored on their big night.

Oh! Dancing! They had been discussing that just before the announcement had been made so what better way to return the festive mood? Rhaedalyn excused herself from her little group and scurried over to B’jin and the other Harpers on stage. “Weyrlingmaster B’jin,” she whispered his name once and then spoke a bit louder when she wasn’t heard with the first attempt. “I would like to dance right now. A song or two before the class tells us their honorifics would be ever so lovely.” Of course she didn’t have a partner but Kahleena wasn’t likely to oppose twirling their gowns around together on the dance square for all to see.

While Valerian heard S’kef’s reply, he chose to ignore and kept walking away. He had said his peace, vented his frustration and hoped he made a point that politics be given their own special time and not used to barge in on events people were actually looking forward to. He was, however, thankful that S’kef was concerned enough about his public image that he quickly ushered the two most outspoken people aside to deal with on their own and anyone else who care an ounce about the ruling right then could mingle over in that direction while everyone else that still wanted to enjoy the purpose of the night could do so without further interruption.

“They’re already forgotten,” he replied to Talian and gave his friend’s clinging arm a quizzical look but didn’t comment on it. Despite the length of their friendship and how well he seemed to know the Healer at times, Valerian sometimes still ran into walls where he wasn’t sure how to scale them. Talian could be someone that didn’t want any sort of contact but he was also someone that liked to hug and show support with various types of physical contact. This was clearly one of the latter times and it was appreciated though it was reciprocated given how quickly it ended and his own lack of being overly touchy-feely.

A curious glance was given to Rhaedalyn as she went scurrying over to talk to B’jin. It was somewhat odd to see that group be proactive but he heard enough of the conversation as they walked closer to the stage to know she was trying to cause a distraction from S’kef’s announcement and the scolding he was giving. That too was appreciated but Valerian wasn’t about to make a fuss over it since that would just defeat the purpose. “Like I said, if you don’t have to stay but maybe check out B’jin’s performance a bit first to see if he’ll debut the song. If you don’t mind, I’m going to go greet my classmates before any once-planned ceremonies happen.” He didn’t speak with some of his closer friends in the class nearly as much as he did before Impressing and that had bothered Valerian deeply for quite some time. He knew about the politics in a weyr when it came to the colour of dragons but he hadn’t quite believed it would happen, especially with some of the bonds he had made.

Jada was probably the hardest one to lose since she was a strong tie to the old life he had in the North by being a friend’s little sister. He had promised to look after her when her brother went Journeying and wanted to be someone she could rely on and know would protect her when they were reunited at Katila. So far, he had failed miserably. S’kef won two of her flights which left her in rough shape and he hadn’t been able to talk to her about her ideas and apparent mission to change things to how she thought they should be. They grew apart because of ideals as much as colour and it had been hard. They could still be called friends, he felt, since he popped by the Sands at times to see how she was doing but the simple days of lazing together with or without young dragons were definitely gone.

Allendris was the other friend he missed the most since Impressing. They had been Stolen at almost the same time and while the new bronzerider didn’t seem interested in his company from the start, a friendship of some sort had started all the same and they even ended up being roommates in the Candidate Barracks. That had probably been part of the problem for the pain of the strained friendship now in effect. Spending so much time with the stoic and handsome man that was fun to tease had formed a crush and Valerian, as inexperienced as he was, had wanted to make something of that. Then they Impressed. That shiny hide pretty much guaranteed nothing would come of any advance made on Allendris and Valerian did his best to move past the attraction, especially when his friend was drawn deeper into the circle of bronzeriders. There was a regal air about the man and that crowd seemed to suit him. Still, Valerian really wasn’t the sort to let such barriers dictate him entirely and he would still greet the man and use the slightly embarrassing nickname of Allie when he did manage to steal some time to catch up.

The friendship with Erisi was the only one that didn’t change from Candidacy to weyrlinghood which was nice since they had an easy one that was fairly basic what with tending to each other’s sexual needs and playing sounding board at the right time. After their lives had been changed by being kidnapped, it was nice to have something constant they could rely on. Valerian figured he would go say quick hellos and congratulations to the others first and then go share a drink with Erisi. Hopefully by then an idea of what was still happening or not for their big night would be had and they could get to the cheering, name changing, and partying.

“Only stay if you’re having fun, okay? We can catch up any other time,” Valerian grabbed Talian’s hand and gave it a light squeeze before mentally shrugging and stepping into his friend’s space to kiss him. He hadn’t quite figured out the opinion on public displays of affection and still the memories of dragging Talian away in flightlust would bother him, but Valerian felt it was okay for a kiss and then a smile as he stepped back again. “Thanks for coming out.” Then he was off to do the mapped out mingling he had decided on.

Talian was pleased when Val seemed to recover from the unpleasant incident, but it hurt to be dismissed. The healer frowned lightly as Val excused himself, careful to keep his mild disappointment masked. "That's fine," he said, resisting the urge to take a dramatic step away to emphasize just how okay it was; Khaduceth subtly discouraged him from that brilliant maneuver.

Tal didn't understand Valerian's bond with his classmate, but he respected it. Talian didn't have any classmates to bond with back during his own schooling. He advanced in the ranks too quickly and held his classes too irregularly to bond with any of them, except Fiora of course, and he surpassed her quickly as well. She'd never been a particularly skilled healer.

His fellow weyrlings didn't hold much appeal to him either, though some of them were trying awfully hard to be his friend. He supposed that was his fault more than theirs, and he admired how even moderately-social  Valerian was able to see the value in his classmates. Tal understood that some of them had been friends for a long time, and while he didn't really get why this evening was so special for Val, he could respect it. Maybe that was the biggest difference between the Talian that arrived at Katila and the Talian who stood there now; just because he didn't understand something no longer drove him to flee from it.

Suddenly, all of Talian's little fears over being sent away vanished. He felt Val's hands wrap around his, and immediately his face heated up. Then, Val stepped closer and Talian could feel his soft lips against his skin. The healer heated up even more, a silly but not quite outlandish grin crossing his face. Before the chance was lost, he zipped in to return the gesture, lightly brushing his cheeks over Val's cheek and stepping away. "...Thank you, Val. I hope to see you again in a little while," he said, flushing sweetly as he smiled and crept away, trying to give Val his space. As Talian made his way to one of the tables, he felt like he was walking on air. Maybe this would be a good party after all...

As Val retreated, Khaduceth watched thoughtfully. As the harper's form retreated into the crowd, the brown dragon decided to do something that he'd never done before in his short life. He quietly reached out to touch the harper's mind, his rich voice appearing as a whisper. I want you to know something, Valerian the brown dragon said with placid certainty. You have made him very happy, both tonight and many times before. Then, having said what he had on his mind, the dragon's presence retreated to mingle peaceably with his happy rider. He wished Talian had more happy nights like this. Forunatly, they were becoming more common...even if something the company of another human was what made the difference.

He's free if you want to 'talk'.

'Haha, aren't you fucking cute tonight.'

Charath didn't deign him with a response, rather channeling a rather smug feeling over to her newly graduated bonded. Their relationship consisted of frequent attempts to one-up each other, and usually Charath won. It wasn't quite clear if Erisi had given up on fighting with her for the most part, or if she won it through earnest effort. Erisi would never actually admit he let her walk all over him sometimes. 'Since you're being such a great help tonight, give me a hand here.' Erisi lifted his arm, rustling the content gold firelizard that was perched upon his shoulder. Harac chirped at him, apparently not terribly upset with being bothered at the moment. She usually was fairly well behaved when their was food around.

"Get Valerian's attention for me," he told the Gold, which she didn't quite understand, but that was why he had Charath. His Green for once did him a favor without bitching about it, and mentally directed Harac where she should go. The flitter seemed to consider the request before taking off from Erisi's shoulder. She weaved through the crowd of party-goers with relative ease until she found her target. Harac was momentarily distressed that Valerian did not quite have a shoulder to land upon, and so she circled around his head with lazy flaps of her wings. When she was confident she had the young man's attention, she flew back through the crowd, expecting Valerian to follow her. She doubled back once just to make sure Valerian didn't get distracted, and screeched at him when he paused to congratulate a classmate.

The Gold flitter was clearly not the perfect image of patience, but neither was her owner. Eventually she made it back to Erisi and landed prettily on his shoulder. Immediately she was rewarded with a bite of food that clearly wasn't made for a firelizard. Valerian's classmate and fellow Harper looked smug and fairly pleased with himself for the little trick Harac had done. Harac had done all the effort for him! All Erisi had to do was sit back and drink some wine. He was already in a good mood, which was a miracle for Erisi. Sometimes it seemed like the young man was destined to be sour constantly. The only time he really lightened up was when he was naked, and in someone else's bed. The first few months of Weyrlinghood had been absolute hell for Erisi and anyone close to him. When he couldn't get laid, he was undeniably grumpy.

"I feel a little bit out of place. You're the one speaking up to the Weyrleader and I'm the one minding my tongue." Erisi lightly brought up the Weyrleader's announcement, giving Valerian appropriate time to comment on his actions and equally enough time to pass the subject over entirely. It was Erisi's way of showing that he cared, and in a way wanted to make sure that Valerian was okay. He'd been with Talian, so he assumed the Healer had some calming effect on him.

I think it's finally showing that you're a bad influence on him. I'd appreciate if you stop trying to get Valerian into trouble.

'Shove it, Charath.'

"So, what should I call you? V'leri? V'ian? Oh, fuck, no, I'll get confused with the twins and I'm already confused enough with them to start with." Erisi smiled, and pulled out the seat next to him in invitation for Valerian to sit down and chat. It wasn't like Valerian had anyone else that important to talk to. Sure, his classmate had other friends, but Erisi counted himself as the most valuable.

Call him More. You scream it enough at him anyways, Charath taunted with a dark laugh.

Erisi decided to ignore her, though the twitch at the corner of his mouth indicated that she was starting to get underneath his skin. It was a good night to be Charath.

The soft sound of his name called B’jin’s still horrified gaze away from where S’kef had marched off with a group of riders. He was still in shock, not only that R’ana had had the guts to step up and make a scene – the woman was in quite enough deep water as it was! Why was she attracting attention?! – but then Valerian had decided that graduating was for the weak and he’d rather die by S’kef’s hand than be a big rider. B’jin was quite sure he had suffered at least six heart attacks, which only intensified when Talian had stepped forward. A bluerider, bringing the green another shot, had grabbed him by the elbow as B’jin swayed in horror. They were all going to die and he wouldn’t be able to stop it!

A mumbled comment from the bluerider had helped shake B’jin back to reality as Valerian and Talian moved in one direction, and S’kef lead the trouble makers in another, with R’nya trotting along behind like an obedient hound. B’jin watched them for a moment, before swiftly seeking out where Talian and Valerian had made off to. He threw back the shot the bluerider had brought him without noticing and handed the empty glass back with a visibly trembling hand. Smirking, with a shake of his head, the bluerider went to get him another one. It wasn’t until Valerian and Talian decided to act all sweet and adorable that B’jin started to relax, a small smirk flickering over his lips as he took another shot glass and flashed a quick smile at the other man before waving him off.

The Harpers had been attended by a non-rider for most events, but with most of them being greenriders with various levels of submissive natures, the blueriders had quickly figured out that if they supplied the booze, the party got far more entertaining. It was still little more than rumour, but when someone from Telgar had let slip that B’jin could be pushed to sing lewd songs if he was drunk enough, that had swiftly become the new goal. An unreached one thus far, as was often the case with B’jin, but one many of the more quirky blueriders had set sights on. Even if they hadn’t managed to get him to sing lewd songs yet, a drunken B’jin was often amusing in his own right. It was kind of funny, to see the timid greenrider get so obnoxious on stage.

Looking down at Rhaedalyn with a slightly unfocused gaze – how many shots had he had, now? They never let him have a proper glass of wine! It was terrible! They were always shoving the crappy Katilan liquor down his throat. B’jin huffed dramatically before blinking and then grinning at Rhaedalyn. The expression was edged with a naughty air as he bowed elegantly to the girl, throwing her a rakish wink as he straightened and turned around just as extravagantly, clapping his hands together once. “The lady wishes to dance!” He waited impatiently as the other ‘riders (and a few stray non) tottered around the stage and set up, grabbing instruments and alcohol and seats before setting down once more. B’jin nodded, before stating the title of the song – an upbeat love song that was popular in Holds with the Ladies (at least pre-Impression, anyway! Or was it pre-plague?) – and he spun around to face the audience.

The greenrider threw back another shot, the alcohol apparently going unnoticed as he opened his mouth to begin singing a breath later, voice rich and without slurr.

Whee! B’jin will sing 2-4 well known and up-beat love songs for Rhaeldayn and the other girls that wanna dance (he doesn’t care about what anyone else wants; Rhae asked first xD) before debuting Valerian’s new song. That’ll happen in my next post with him >D – the duration between now and then will be B’jin drinking shots and singing and managing not to slur the words. He’s well trained, K?

R’nd watched the unfolding of the events with a cautious and alert eye. He wasn’t too impressed with the declaration, knowing how important graduation had been to him and finally shedding the old life and name of Orwind so he could feel Valerian’s frustration and pain but he wouldn’t have risked going against S’kef. It wasn’t so much that he was afraid of the man given the tangling he’d had in the past already but he didn’t want that particular label on him forever. He’d always be watched by J’ver and S’kef and the paranoia would become quite annoying! R’nd didn’t like the idea of stressing B’jin either. B’run was foolish to think his words would sway S’kef in any way but when R’ana stepped into the picture, it was clear that there was something between those two and R’nd could understand doing stupid things for those you cared for.

Still, it was foolish and R’nd finally looked away when the small group was escorted away. He knew there would be a lashing and R’nd had seen enough of those from B’jin’s experience to last him a life time or more. They weren’t enjoyable to witness and they brought back memories and a fear for the greenrider after the man had fainted and R’nd really didn’t want to revisit that. Although, he had to admit his ‘fellis soup’ was something to laugh about – though not around Talian since that had earned him a lengthy lecture about the potency.

When Rhaedalyn requested some songs to dance to and B’jin seeming to love the idea, R’nd’s festive mood returned and he wandered a bit closer to the stage to find a dance partner. The young woman who had asked for the music was the obvious choice but R’nd wasn’t sure if Rhaedalyn would be able to handle such an activity given their recent past. She was an imaginative woman that seemed the sort to faint at the touch of his hand to her waist. He might catch up with her later on all the same but for now, he veered for the newest goldrider. “My lady, may I have this dance?” A hand was offered to Kahleena and a dashing smile accompanied his words. He didn’t know too much about her since she seemed immune to his flirting and was rather shy but she seemed eager to dance and that was all he needed to know!

The drama heightened. His distraction hadn't worked and he felt miserable with the thick arguments and backstories and hatreds that he would never understand. There was too much going on for him to even pick out one thing and focus on it. He cowered and tried to make himself small. He nearly fell asleep simply because he was being still.

When he came to his senses, some music had started playing. The two girls he'd run into at the kitchen were both there, Rhaedalyn and Kathleena. If they were going to dance, it would take him away from this stuffy table with all their men and their pissing match. It was a sausage fest at this table. Rhaedalyn looked like she was talking to someone else. And Kathleena, the only other female he knew? Another man was asking him for her hand to dance.

He groaned audibly as R'nd offered a dance to Kathleena. The early bird gets the worm... Their meeting had been awkward anyways, but the way that Kathleena mimicked his awkwardness helped him to feel comforted.

He remembered he knew another woman. He got up and pitifully crossed the floor and stood by R'ana. Or at least, who he thought was R'ana. He was tired.

"R'ana...", he began. Oh wait, they didn't have honorifics anymore. "I don't know your name...", he tried. This wasn't going very well. He gulped. "Dance with me?"

As if the invitation wasn't enough, he began to talk again. "I have to get away from that table. Too many angry men." If many of the men were angry, it meant that Katila weyr's men cared for their women and didn't want to see them stripped of honorifics. Katila cared about its women.
