The day had been fairly uneventful. With the lessons the previous day, and B’jin’s usual method of leaving off official lessons to no more than one or two sessions a week, no one had batted an eye when he had proclaimed that day to be one the Weyrlings could use to keep themselves entertained. Their dragonets were young, and after a bathing, oiling and feeding, they had curious minds and too many questions. They wanted to explore, they wanted to know and understand and they wanted to play – with each other, with weyrbrats, with the birds, with the shadows – it was kind of hilarious to see the different things which captured their attention. B’jin perhaps enjoyed watching them run around chasing butterflies more than he did educating them.

B’jin, for his part, had spent most of the day with his children. Indamor was growing up into a very serious young man who would soon be eleven. The following turn, he would officially be old enough to begin Standing, and B’jin was both anxious and excited. Larrikith was firm in her opinion that the youngster would Impress to a bronze (which was quite fine in B’jin’s opinion!) but he wasn’t sure how well a twelve year old would handle a beast such as a bronze. He hadn’t asked Indamor about it, of course, but the boy had always been of the quiet opinion he would Stand, and B’jin had always been on the smug opinion he would Impress well. It was simply a matter of time!

It was, however, Amorandii that currently held her father’s attention as he watched her very carefully wrap the gift. At just barely six turns old, the little girl was filled with a great deal of importance as she used a piece of string to tie the painted paper around the item she had helped her father pick out for Talian. The young Healer turned Weyrling was still considered as something between the world’s coolest big brother, and a future husband. B’jin had been more than a little amused (and slightly scandalised) when the girl told him she would be marrying her ‘bestest big brother’ one day.

After picking the gift from B’jin’s trove of items, Amorandii had spent the morning carefully painting a rather obscure image that was apparently Khaduceth and Talian standing around in the sunshine. B’jin hoped the boy was at least familiar enough with children’s image to pick was it was without insulting the girl who was so proud of it. Though how Talian would determine what the rather vague splodges of colour were was beyond B’jin’s comprehension. Amorandii was not an artist; she tried, but she did not have the skill.

“Done!” The little girl proclaimed, patting the messy bow she had tied and beaming up at B’jin successfully. The greenrider grinned back, taking the little girl’s hand in one of his own, and picking up the gift with the other. Turning, he let her bounce toward the door, the girl pulling free of his hand and skipping cheerfully. The pair made their way through the Barracks without incident to arrive at Talian and Khaduceth’s room.

Amorandii lifted a hand to rap importantly on the door. “Knock knock!” Without waiting for an answer, the little girl fumbled with the handle for a moment before shoving the door open excitedly and bounding into the room, blonde hair bouncing and skirts twirling. “Happy birthday!” It was a girlish squeal of utter delight at surprising Talian (she was convinced she’d just uttered the best surprise greeting ever) and threw herself at Talian without further ado, planting a solid kiss on his cheek.

“We got you a gift!” She grinned winningly, while B'jin slipped in with an amused smile, closing the door behind him.

The relaxed pace of lessons was good for Talian and Khaduceth. Tal had never been encouraged to relax or enjoy himself in an educational setting. They'd all been high-pressure and, for the most part, unpleasant and even unwanted. Talian still wasn't thrilled with the idea of becoming a dragonrider, but he found the process oddly soothing thus far. He missed healing, of course, but the strange almost-leisure of lessons made him feel like he was on a vacation rather than ripped away forever. Maybe it wasn't that, though; perhaps it had more to do with Khaduceth's unshaking faith that things would ultimately be okay. Every time Talian got anxious over it, Khaduceth seemed to know just what to say to fix it.

Khaduceth himself was getting big, and fast. Talian didn't like it. That was an ugly reminder that their current contentment was due for a harsh end one day. He was a sweet dragonet, though, and stayed close to Talian even during their leisure time. On the lazy-lesson days, rather than romping and playing, Khaduceth preferred to sit neatly in the grass and bat his paw at Fellis, who'd taken to the dragon like a big brother. Talian would watch them, transfixed by how very gentle Khaduceth was for something so cumbersomly large. He would also daydream, sometimes for hours on end, and Khaduceth never interrupted him.

Talian hadn't seen much of B'jin, though. The Impression had certainly interrupted their old routine, which was a shame. Talian was finally getting used to B'jin's children and had even managed to teach Andi how to mix redwort and put bandages on a cut. It was nice to feel like he had a real family, even if it was hard to relate to the kids sometimes. They'd felt like baggage at first, but as he gradually relaxed, Tal felt like they really could be his little brother and sister.

Too bad he hadn't seen them much.

Today, Talian was sitting in his new and much-hated room in the weyrling barracks, writing in his journal while Fellis watched intently. The little fire lizard's head bobbed about as he watched the quill move. Khaduceth was curled in the floor close by, watching quietly through Talian's eyes and occasionally asking mellow questions about the diagrams the young man drew in the margins.

It's about plants he said, trying to project his thoughts at the dragon. He'd only managed it for the first time yesterday. It was still far from easy, but he'd been practicing ever since. When Khaduceth didn't respond, Talian sighed and tried again. It's about plants. Things we don't have a home

Khaduceth lifted his head and rumbled softly. The plants are different? So you are drawing them to show to other humans?

That's the idea, one day...

Khaduceth cocked his head to one side, confused. Talian sighed and half-laughed. "I hope to one day," he repeated aloud. Khaduceth snorted.  Don't doubt it. I'll take you myself, once I am large enough he aid simply, as if it were nothing. Who was Nirinath to stop him?

That's how he felt in that moment at least! He fanned his wings a bit and let out a self-satisfied croon, but it came with a warm feeling of reassurance as well. He didn't know where this mythical other-place called 'North' was, but Talian wanted to go. Khaduceth knew that much. He wanted to go and felt like Khaduceth was the reason he never could. Khaduceth would prove him wrong, though! He wouldn't be the reason they didn't go. He would be the one to make it happen.

Talian picked up on the attitude a little and smiled. "Scheming thing," he said, prodding the dragon's foreleg with his foot.

Don't doubt me replied the brown. It was almost a command, and it caused Talian to snort.

"Yes, sir," he said as he looked back to his journal. He wasn't a particularly good artist, but damn it, leaves were easy to draw! Khaduceth peered through his eyes again

Talian didn't get far, though. There was a knock at the door, causing him to pause and stare at it in disbelief for a moment. Who would come to talk to him now?

Ah, that explained it. In came Andi, flinging herself at him as always. He quickly stood up and took a step towards her, catching her awkwardly but dutifully in his arms and hugging her close. It had taken months to get to where he was even comfortable hugging her, but he'd softened up, and now the kiss to his cheek made him smile rather than cringe.

Wait, what?

"What was that you said?" he asked, looking down at her with surprise. "Happy birthday?" Well, he was sure surprised. He blinked, looking between her and her newly-arrived father. "You got me something for my birthday?" he asked, as if it were incomprehensible.

Khaduceth uncurled and crept over. He sniffed Andi intrusively, making sure this 'birthday' thing she'd so surprised his bonded with wasn't dangerous. Once satisfied, he sat down and delicately curled his tail around his paws, watching with calm amusement as the scene unfolded. They love you he reminded Talian, who was having a hard time accepting that his birthday was being acknowledged.

He set Andi down and looked to B'jin. "I never should have told you," he said, frowning a little. "Twenty-six, B'jin. Twenty-six and this is my third one here." Shards, it sounded bad when he said it like that, but since when did Talian understand when and when not to say things, especially blunt observations?

Amorandii nodded emphatically at Talian's question, skinny arms linked tightly around the young man's neck as she enjoyed the snuggly moment, quite pleased with his obvious surprise. The girl positively glowed with self satisfaction as B'jin sat down on the edge of the bed, watching the scene with affectionate amusement. "The best something ever!" she gushed, keeping her voice on a lower pitch than she otherwise might have used to express her delight. Talian didn't like it when she squealed in his ear. Neither did Daddy, but he wasn't usually lucky enough to get the little girl to mute herself.

"We did," B'jin replied lightly, not at all phased by Talian's grumbling, as he held out the small gift. Wrapped up in the careful if not particularly talented image Amorandii had painted, was a small token gift. B'jin had collected a lot of random items from the North when he was a Searchrider, hoarding them and anything else he could trade out of other riders at Katila and keeping them aside for his children. They were allowed to select something they liked on their birthdays, to keep for themselves. B'jin had no idea if Talian would like the item Amorandii had picked out for him, but he'd guessed the young man wouldn't want to actively choose something himself. That wasn't really Talian's style, and even Indamor was getting to the age where he was 'too grown up' to be very enthusiastic about it. B'jin still knew he enjoyed it, but he pretended not to.

"Hello!" The girl's eyes widened once more, excited as she wriggled out of Talian's arms as he put her down and quickly stepped closer to the dragonet, curiosity radiating off her as she extended one hand with splayed fingers to pet the dragonet, shooting a cautious look at her father out of the corner of her eye as she did so, expecting to be scolded. When it didn't come, Amorandii forgot all about being careful not to spook the little brown, and threw herself at him, dropping to her knees while she wrapped her arms around his neck and nuzzled her face against him. He was so soft! Amorandii giggled gleefully.

B'jin who was currently more occupied with rolling his eyes at Talian's grumbling about his birthday's and how many he had had, offered the young healer a small, sly smile. "Careful, or you'll find yourself with make-up-parties to repair the damage." A nod was given to Amorandii to indicate who it was that had demanded Talian's birthday be celebrated. He'd managed to talk her out of exuberance and a full on party with all the things Amorandii was quite sure (thank you very much) Talian both wanted and needed for his birthday. However, the Harper's eyes widened as he spotted his little girl well and truly abusing the baby dragon with cuddles and random kisses as she cooded to him.

"Andi!" Horrified, his voice came out as a harsh snap, causing the little girl to jerk in surprise, though she only clung to Khaduceth's neck tighter, ignoring any fight the dragonet might have put up, to eye B'jin defiantly from over his neck spines, her expression pure B'jin in the set of jaw and the narrowing of her eyes as she stared him down. "Get off him!"

You can decide what she grabbed for him xD

Talian blushed, inclining his head slightly at B'jin's words. "I think one will do," he replied softly, shifting his weight uncomfortably between his feet before leaning in for a brief hug. The surprise made him insanely uncomfortable, but at the same time he genuinely appreciated it. He'd almost always ignored his birthday completely. Fiora sometimes gave him a little trinket or something, but he was usually too busy to make plans for a particular day, even if it was his birthday. It wasn't something he'd missed or lamented over, but as it stood now, he found himself pleased with the gesture, albeit embarrassed. He wasn't sure why he was embarrassed, but he was.

He snuggled B'jin shamelessly for a moment before peeling himself away, looking down to the indelicately wrapped present in his hands. A twitchy smile played on the corner of his mouth before he started to fiddle with it, carefully peeling the paper away from the present inside.

He didn't get a chance to look at it before B'jin's snapping words startled him. He spun around, watching as Khaduceth stoically tolerated Andi's climbing, poking, kissing, nuzzling, and squeezing. Tthe dragonet was indifferent, though maybe the smallest bit amused, and was handling the abuse quite well. "Oh, B'jin! Don't worry, he doesn't mind."

Of course, when Andi jumped to evade B'jin, the dragonet yelped in sudden pain as She pressed herself against his neck and unwittingly pressing one of his fragile young wings against his body. Talian yelped as well; Khaduceth had never really been hurt before, and while Talian had experienced discomfort at minor bumps and bruises, something sharp and sudden came as a true shock to him. Talian didn't even have wings, but he felt the pain just the same!

He set the present and the it's wrapping down on his desk and bolted to Khaduceth's side. The dragonet had already shrugged it off and seemed quite unconcerned, but it was partially due to his desire not to upset Talian. Khaduceth considered it his responsibility,  and shard it, he was supposed to be the strong one! Talian's raw healer instinct crushed any resistance the dragonet could hope to mount, however. Tal came to his side, kneeling beside him and carefully untangling Andi.

"Are you okay?!" Talian asked, managing to be focused and yet panicked at the same time. Khaduceth crooned in delight at his bonded's concern and nosed him. I am fine! You worry too much the dragonet said sweetly. Talian frowned, relaxing visibly but not yet satisfied. "Wing!" he ordered. Khaduceth easily extended his wing, trying not to wiggle at the tickly sensation of Talian examining it for damage.

The little dragonet swelled with pride. His bonded was so good at this! The best ever! His eyes flashed blue and he purred.

It took a minute for Talian to be satisfied. He sighed and carefully helped Khaduceth fold his wing, though the dragonet needed to help. Tal looked to Andi and shook his finger. "He's just a baby, Andi. You need to be careful. If you hurt him, you hurt me, too." He reached out and wrapped her in a hug, reassuring her that neither he or Khaduceth were angry. Fellis, who had been remarkably quiet through most of this due nto being paralyzed with fear, fluttered over and landed awkwardly on Khaduceth's head. The dragonet's nostrils quivered at the flitter's tickling touch, but he remained otherwise still.

Talian scooped Andi up into his arms and moved back to his desk. "Now, let's see what we've got."

The present was lovely. It was a lovely carved paperweight, obviously intended for decorating desks. The paper drew more of his attention, though. Talian had no sharding idea what it was, but he hardly understood children. He figured it would tickle her to ask her to talk about it, though. "This is pretty, Andi.  Did you paint this?"

What the hell is it? Is that you?

Of course it isn't. Only I am me

Talian froze. As usual, he had no idea if that was a joke or not.

B'jin hugged Talian happily once the young man had initiated it, holding him lightly with a small smirk at the quiet words; yes, one birthday was more than enough, but B'jin was pleased to see Talian wasn't completely horrified by the one he'd been given. He would be getting more - one every year! - because Amorandii enjoyed birthdays far too much for Talian to escape a yearly attack. B'jin was not looking forward to his own, and had a feeling it was Larrikith that kept Amorandii up to date on who was having a birthday, and when. Traitorous beast.

B'jin's expression turned thunderous when both dragonet and Talian yelped, causing Amorandii to flinch away even before Talian got there, the little girl cowering beside her brother and doing her best not to look at B'jin who had his arms crossed angrily, though he was leaving it for the moment to Talian, the young man flying over to his dragon and scolding the little girl.

Amorandii burst into silent tears when Talian started waving his finger in her face, huge blue eyes flooding and overflowing without a word. Displeased, B'jin didn't bother to rescue the child, nor add his word to Talian's. The healer was capable to making sure his dragonet wasn't damaged and the little creature didn't look particularly distressed. Amorandii would take to heart a scolding by her brother far more than one from her father.

"I'm s-sorry!" Amorandii sobbed the words, throwing her arms around Talian's neck when he pulled her in for a hug and burying her teary face in his shoulder. Startled, frightened and crushed at being scolded by Talian, her tears were from the shock of the situation and were quiet, though they didn't stop tumbling down her cheek.

Amorandii snuggled into Talian's lap as he returned them to look at the gift she had chosen for him, the little girl clearly intent on winning back Talian's good opinion smiled watery as the young Healer complimented her work. "Yes," she said softly, one hand tangled determinedly in Talian's shirt, the other hand pointed at the image while B'jin joined them, leaning a hip against the back of Talian's chair and watching placidly.

"This one, this is you! And this is Caguseth! And there, that's Fellis!" Amorandii beamed at Talian, forgetting in her excitement all about her tears and heartache at hurting Khaduceth and Talian and disappointing them and her father. "Daddy painted a picture too, but he said mine was better and we should give you this one!" The girl positively glowed with pride as she shared the compliment she'd received while B'jin swallowed a giggling snort of laughter at the expression he imagined to be playing on Talian's face.

"It's a great painting, Andi. I'm sure Talian will put it in a place of honour!"

Amorandii wriggled gleefully where she was sitting on Talian's knee, turning huge blue eyes on the Weyrling. "Do you like it?" She demanded. He had already said it was pretty, but he hadn't said if he liked it!

Oh shards, Andi was upset. Talian felt a pang of guilt, but he kept a hard face as he wrapped his arms around the girl and pulled her close. "It's okay, Andi," he reassured her. "Just be careful." Good thing talking about the picture distracted her! Talian wasn't very good art being a disciplinarian, and he felt bad making the poor girl cry like that, even if it had been in necessary defense of his dragon.

Talian smiled softly. He normally had little patience for the antics of children, but this was somehow charming. Andi often said she loved him and was always enthusiastic when B'jin brought her around, but looking at the multicolored splotches on this paper, Talian knew that the little girl had actually taken the time to think about him. Shards, she'd taken more time to think about him than most of the people he'd known for most of his life, even though it took a few minutes for that fact to sink in.

"Oh, wow.." he murmured. "You got all three of us," he said, looking from the paper to the girl and back to the paper again. Without warning, he wrapped his arm around her once more and squeezed her tightly. "I love it, Andi," he assured her, allowing himself a small, tickled laugh.

Fellis flickered from the top of Khaduceth's head and appeared on the table. He crawled to the edge of the table and extended his neck, sniffing at the girl cautiously. She was too excitable for him to risk hopping in her lap like he did for Valerian, but Talian was awfully pleased with her right now, so the flit decided to risk a close encounter. Talian smiled and held out one hand for Fellis and clicked his tongue, encouraging the creature to step onto it. The fire lizard nervously obeyed and hold on tight as Talian moved his hand over to Andi.

"Be gentle with him," he reminded her. He imagined it would be a nice treat for her; Fellis had never allowed her to touch him before. Fellis cheeped cautiously at Andi and pressed himself close to Talian's hand, but he obeyed nonetheless. Talian reassured him quietly and smiled.

Please remind her that my name is 'Khaduceth', not Caguseth the brown dragonet said, crawling across the floor and setting his head on the corner of Talian's knee that was unoccupied. The dragonet purred, but since Talian lacked a free hand to pet him with, he would have to wait.

"'Khaduceth'," Talian said, nodding to the dragonet. It was a gentle reminder, spoken more in a doctor's voice than anything, but Talian always had a pretty good bedside manner.

Talian suddenly realized that he was covered in critters. He turned his head towards B'jin and beamed at him, monetarily overwhelmed by the smothering outpouring of love. Fellis and Khaduceth were practically radiating it, but it was easy to tell with them; they were linked to his mind and couldn't fake love if they wanted to, not like his mother and father and his shitty friends back at Fort.

It was easy to tell with dragons and fire lizards, but people were different. People could lie and people have questionable motives. Right then, however, Talian felt genuinely loved. He felt like he had a real sister to go with his real dad.

"Best birthday ever," Talian said softly.

Amorandii glowed more brightly than a proddy gold at Talian’s hug and declaration, positively thrilled by the words and affection both, the little girl wriggling gleefully on the Healer’s knee. She would have expressed her delight with an enthusiastic declaration of a ‘yay’, but the child swallowed any outbursts that might have made it past her lips as the timid firelizard inched toward her, and Amorandii froze as her eyes widened dramatically. The girl quivered with delight as her little fingers extended tentatively to pet the blue firelizard on the head, cautious and dramatically exaggerated movements born of her fear of harming Fellis as she had Khaduceth moments before.

“Pretty Fellis!” Amorandii cooed softly, withdrawing her hand and folding them in her lap, fingers wrapped together as she beamed up at Talian in soul encompassing delight, wordless in her delight at being allowed to coddle the little firelizard that usually went out of his way to stay well out of reach! A frown took over, however, as Talian spoke his dragon’s name and nodded at the beast, Amorandii tilting her head in confusion and looking first at the brown, and then up at Talian. “That’s what I said!” Indignation filled her voice, it alongside the expression painted across her young face made her every bit her father’s daughter.

B’jin, for his part, just laughed and shrugged when Talian turned to look up at him, the Harper moving forward to place a hand lightly on Talian’s shoulder, before gingerly offering a finger to be sniffed by Fellis, watching the little firelizard with a slight pursing of his lips the only display of his actual distaste for the animals at large, before withdrawing his hand and placing it lightly back on Talian’s shoulder. A devious expression tipped his lips, causing a smirk to flicker into life. “Andi,” B’jin purred softly, “Why don’t you tell Talian what you have planned for his next birthday?” The greenrider smirked devilishly as the child launched into an exuberant and very colourful explanation of what terrible tortures a six year old could think up for her older brother’s birthday.

Don’t worry, Larrikith’s voice came gently to brush against the minds of both Talian and Khaduceth, B’jin included in the conversation as she laughed softly. She won’t remember a whit of what she’s saying in a day or two. B’jin sniggered, a sound that (luckily) coincided with a laugh of Amorandii’s own – at least he wouldn’t be accused of laughing at his daughter!

Fellis fidgeted nervously under Andi's touch, but he was a good boy for daddy and held still in spite of his nervousness. At length, a happy purr began to radiate from the tiny blue as he realized that the girl was perfectly gentle and would not harm him, at least not this time! He crooned, turning his head to delicately lick her finger a single time before moving on to the next thing.  He crawled carefully up Talian's arm to meet B'jin's hand, sniffing the offered finger with perfect politeness before pulling his head back and chirping what almost appeared to be a thanks, though he never actually touched the greenrider. He'd learned from past experiences to never touch B'jin!

Afterwards, Fellis made his journey to the front of Talian's shirt. He peeped a final time before diving down the front of the man's shirt as he so often did, situating himself right inside and poking his head out of the neckline. Talian laughed and gave him a small pat, still thoroughly enjoying the attention of his weird family.

"I love you all," Talian said, blushing at the notion of even more festivities next year. Andi was already well into her explanation, which was of course far more elaborate than he ever felt would be necessary.  He relaxed a bit as Larrikith bespoke him, reminding him of yet another member of his weird family that he sometimes forgot about. He and Larrikith had started off so poorly...he was glad it hadn't always stayed that way, and that she hadn't abandoned him when he Impressed a dragon of his own. It was strange, how things changed with time.

Khaduceth purred in agreement. In spite of not living through those memories, he could very well live them through Talian's steel-trap mind. He wanted to be the ultimate reason that everything was okay, but he would have been foolish to deny the importance of these others as well. He lifted his head, nudging Talian gently as the man laughed.

"I love you! But you're all terrible. I don't even know why you...why you're making such a big deal out of this.  It's j-just another birthday."

Shards, how long had he been crying?
