“Oh, no, you didn’t hit me. And even if you did, that would be my own fault for not paying attention to my surroundings.” She shrugged, shaking out the muscles in her legs as she started walking again, nodding at the girl’s question on taking a break. She was glad of the brief respite. She’d been running all day already.
She paused, considering the question of being a runner. She was glad to find someone else who knew of her craft. Aederyn saw Runners as the rarely seen, under appreciated craft of Pern that were sometimes even made the butt of jokes, but with bigger, more important jobs to do, they tended to just blow that off and keep on running. They were the craft that, if they all suddenly disappeared, Pern would likely trip over itself and wonder what happened, yet people seldom knew Runners existed. She liked that ‘working in the background’ sense of purpose. “It’s…interesting.” She finally said, and continued walking.“We get to travel a lot, but for all of that travel we hardly know what’s happening outside of our runner stations because we spend so much time alone on the traces. We get a lot of time to think.” She quirked a shoulder in a combination of another shrug and working the tired muscles there. She giggled. “I think you might be the first non-runner I’ve seen in over a week.” She walked alongside the girl for a few paces as she seemed to consider this, and responded to the belated introduction. “Aederyn.” She snapped a lazy salute with a smile as they walked.
If she remembered correctly, and the girl being out here by herself confirmed it, August hadn’t Impressed on that crazy day…she wasn’t sure how a candidate would feel about not Impressing, and didn’t want to possibly make an enemy of this new girl. She considered her next words carefully. “Are you from around here? I saw you at the Weyr a while back when I was here with a friend…”
