Madiquel smiled gratefully at Eb’zer as he handed her a mug of warm herbal tea sweetened with honey, before watching the healer take a last glance around and excuse himself. She, and her fellow classmates, were set up in one of the old goldrider weyrs; it was a huge family one, with four bedrooms and a private bathing room. Perfect for keeping herself, Beckitt and Misharan under constant supervision, with plenty of room for adult dragons to let their riders in, both announced and unexpectedly. Taking a sip of her tea, Madiquel watched Zezeth sleeping quietly beside her, the little green’s head resting on her lap.

With her head in the clouds, eyes glazed and sipping from her drink abensetly as she watched her dragonet breathe in and out, Madiquel was quietly startled when she heard the shuffle of feet at her doorway. Blinking, she looked up, expecting to see one of the boys, or maybe one of the many adults that popped in irregularly. Instead, she blinked again and forced her gaze to focus on A’tay. Madiquel’s face bloomed into a smile, and she shifted slightly as if she was going to stand, before sagging and waving A’tay to come to her, smiling with bone deep exhaustion.

“Hey,” she said quietly, leaning into her best friend when he sat beside her, almost sagging. She felt a million turns old, and was sure she looked awful; Madiquel had barely slept at all between Impressing and the current moment. So much time was spent making sure Zezeth was still alive, only sleeping – or feeding her, or cleaning up after her when she went to the toilet. There was a bucket of water and a bucket of meaty soup on one side of her doorway, while the far side of her room had what looked like a small sandpit for Zezeth to go to the toilet in; the tiny dragon showing the most amount of dignity when she eyeballed it the first time, disgusted.

“Oh Tay,” Madiquel sighed, suddenly on the verge of breaking, “what have I done?” She lifted her gaze, peering up at A’tay through a wave of unshed tears, biting her bottom lip as she sniffled. She hadn’t heard from her Papa yet, and wasn’t sure how to take that except in the most negative way imaginable, completely convinced he hated her for her betrayal. She was so terrified that Zezeth would die, and she’d lose her little green baby and join her father in that strange, mad void he had been living in since the landslide. “What if she dies?” Madiquel asked brokenly, bursting into tears as she whispered the fear everyone had about the three hatchlings, but that she hadn’t yet voiced about her dragon. Zezeth was in a deep slumber, breathing deeply and almost snoring softly with each breath. She didn’t so much as twitch when Madiquel twisted to wrap her arms around A’tay and press her face to his chest, crying brokenly.

He was finally allowed to see Madiquel! It had been the longest twenty-four hours of his life. All he wanted was to hug her and congratulate her and double check that she was okay with Impressing when she had never wanted to. But no. Every adult in the Weyr—at least it felt like it—kept telling him not to bother the Healers and everyone needed rest. Xyxyth wouldn’t even help him pass on a message stating he didn’t want to upset the little green by barging in on her space without permission. The green was too weak to talk directly to and he refused to try, deciding to instead protect all three babies like the humans were doing.

A’tay conceded and was willing to wait as long as he could but instead got pulled into playing messenger for someone that he was still in shock over seeing. But he had returned to Ista Weyr with the letter in hand a threat repeating in his head about what would happen if he failed in his task or made Madiquel cry. His wide-eyes and explanation seemed to be enough to let him and as he entered the room, spotting Madiquel, the look didn’t entirely fade.

She looked like crap. It was clear she hadn’t slept much, if at all, and he couldn’t quite read her expression until she registered his arrival and waved him over. He took quiet and cautious steps across the room, eyes more on the dragonet than anywhere else. He was afraid to disturb her but also so curious about what she looked like and how she was doing. But he refrained from gawking as he sat down beside his best friend and managed to slip an arm around her as Madiquel slumped against him. It wasn’t really the hug he had wanted to give but it would do.

“Please don’t cry,” A’tay panicked slightly, wondering if this counted as him making her cry and if Jajojin would know. But he ignored that fear to focus on his friend needing him, brushing some loose strands of hair from her face and offering a small smile.

“You haven’t done anything but reply to the call of your dragon.” How could Madiquel think she’d done something wrong? The dragon chose the rider, it wasn’t like she had a choice in the matter or was expecting it. She wasn’t even on the Sands so she wasn’t doing anything other than hoping for the best like the rest of them. “And now you’re ensuring she survives. I know you wanted to be a Healer and you’ll be one yet, but maybe the training you have had was meant to help… what’s her name, DiDi?”

He studied the dragon now that he had mentioned her and asked for a name. She was so frail and almost grotesque with the features seeming too large with the lack of meat on her bones. But A’tay was confident she’d survive. She’d made the bond with Madiquel and held on long enough to get aid. That alone spoke volumes of her willpower—combine that with Madiquel’s own determination and those two would be ruling the Weyr instead of Ameris soon enough.

Madiquel sniffled, and slowly pulled herself together. She felt a little better, having shared the weight of the biggest question on her shoulders with her friend, and his response was to support her, not condemn her, and that helped more than Madiquel could say or had known it would. Sighing deeply, Madiquel wiped her face, mostly with her own sleeve, since there was a teary wet spot in the middle of A’tay’s shirt from her meltdown. She didn’t move away, though, and instead curled in closer, shifting and carefully moving Zezeth’s head so the dragonet was still on her lap, but so Madiquel was comfortably plastered against A’tay’s side. “I’m so glad you’re here,” Madiquel said softly, and with great sincerity.

Looking up at A’tay’s question, Madiquel blinked blankly at him for several moments. Her lips parted, but no sound came out before she flushed crimson, ducking her head and curling up against A’tay so he couldn’t see her face. “Its Zezeth,” she said, quietly but clearly, still avoiding looking up at him. What a group they made! Xyxyth and Zezeth and TayTay and DiDi… Madiquel spluttered a soft giggle at the absurdity of it all, the sound turning into a hiccup part way through and she giggled again, at that, before dissolving into a ridiculous fit of soft laughter. Faranth, she needed about six turns of sleep, and knew she wouldn’t be getting any for far too long. Slowly, her giggles subsided, and she sighed again, puffing out the breath in exhaustion.

“We’ll have to rename Shadow and Clover,” Madiquel said at last, speaking before A’tay could after her revelation of her dragon’s name, and her giggling fit. “Maybe DoDo and CloClo?” She tilted her head up, resting her cheek against the curve of A’tay’s shoulder and grinning at him with an expression of exhausted amusement. Better, to think of renaming her firelizard to fit the theme (she was surprised they both didn’t barge in at their actual names) than to think about Zezeth’s precious grip on life, or her father’s likely demise into complete insanity, and the betrayal he must feel at her Impressing.

It had only been one day but A'tay was convinced Madiquel had already lost her mind. He couldn't help but glance down at the dragonet and saw she was breathing, but the nonsensical ideas and slightly hysterical laughter worried him. He didn't know what to do or say and it probably showed when she finally calmed a bit and stared at him from where her chin rested on his shoulder.

"Um..." he didn't think renaming the firelizards would help anything and saying that probably wasn't smart either. So he was back to not knowing what to say until he realised he hadn't had a chance to comment on Zezeth's name in general. "Zezeth is a great name. Xyxyth hopes he can meet her today or soon if she's not allowed near other dragons yet." He didn't know if they were in isolation or not. Some people whispered theories that the original plague started from a blue-sired clutch which was why there weren't any records of it happening before because no one wanted to admit to being a part of the cause. A'tay thought that was ridiculous but caution in general wasn't a bad idea. The babies were weak and who knew what might affect them and how. So his way of thinking was more for the dragonets being kept safe than the population at large.

"And, um... your Papa uh, he asked to see me and," he was still a bit startled from that encounter and while it wasn't bad news he was relaying, it was still difficult to find the words. "he said to tell you he'll be here as soon as he can be. Not that anything is more important than you! Just, the whole dragon thing and going between..." A'tay fell silent both because he felt like he wasn't helping and because he worried he'd slip up and say he always wondered if Jajojin didn't dread between but that he dreaded coming back out of it again.

A'tay fished out the letter from his pocket and handed it over to Madiquel, whispering, "he still loves you, DiDi."

“Soon,” Madiquel agreed, looking down at the little dragonet. Dragons didn’t get sick a whole lot, but they were known to get colds upon occasion, and with how tiny the three Hatchlings were, Madiquel hated to think how thoroughly even a small cold would screw with them. She doubted they’d live through it, like the young infants they’d learned about in classes, that got sick and died before they’d even began to live. She shuddered, the quiver tearing through her whole body, and she pressed into the warmth of A’tay unconsciously.

Madiquel blinked, and tilted her head to look up at A’tay again, brushing wisps of her hair off her face and blinking again. “Papa?” she asked, her face crumpling at A’tay’s words, though she managed not to burst into tears, green eyes swimming behind a sudden swarm of tears; Madiquel bit her bottom lip, hard, and nodded at A’tay’s words. She wanted – desperately – to believe him, but she just couldn’t. Madiquel could remember the early days, after her Papa’s precious bronze had died, and remembered how he’d reacted when he’d been told he would have to ride a dragon, ride a dragon between, to get to the Weyr when they all moved up to the North… And now she’d Impressed a dragonet that was barely hanging on to life. “Oh, Papa,” Madiquel choked, her voice a soft whisper of despair.

Her breath hitched when A’tay handed her the letter, but Madiquel was ashamed and confused by how little they had to do with their connection to her Papa, and how much it did have to do with the blonde bronzerider she was clinging to. Sniffling, she took the letter and stared at it watery, before handing it back to A’tay. “Read it to me?” She asked softly, breathing out slowly as a couple of tears fell. Even when she wasn’t emotional and exhausted, words troubled her and Madiquel knew in her current state she’d be even worse at reading than normal; never mind the fact that she could barely see straight!

“Thank you,” She said softly, as A’tay took the letter back and unfolded it. Leaning up carefully, one hand pressed to A’tay’s chest to balance herself, Madiquel pressed a soft kiss to his cheek; her eyes were closed, and the light press of her lips landed on the corner of his own, rather than the middle of his cheek where she normally placed them. Sighing softly again, Madiquel tucked her head under A’tay’s chin, resting her ear to his chest and listening to the soft sound of his breathing and his beating heart, the fingers of her right hand curled into a fist of his shirt; she was asleep before he’d really began to read the letter from her Papa, her breaths low, deep and even.

Finally, Zezeth’s voice was a low, gravelly rumble as she lifted her skeletal head and blinked at A’tay, watching him react to her being awake, and speaking, with a kind of knowing amusement. Due to her youth, her voice was less for A’tay and more in general, but the way she was staring at the bronzerider made it clear she was whispering to him, doing her best to not wake the girl that was finally sleeping. Zezeth had been worried her Madiquel would never sleep, and that just wasn’t good. Especially with how much Madiquel said Zezeth needed to sleep, to help her get strong and grow up big. Blinking thoughtfully at A’tay, Zezeth slowly lifted herself from Madiquel’s lap, pausing every time her rider-to-be mumbled in her sleep or twitched. As a result, it took almost half an hour for Zezeth to go from being awake, to being on the floor and stretching out her awkward, ungainly little green body.

The little dragon glanced once more at Madiquel, now curled up on A’tay’s lap, amused, and then trotted – her gait wobbly and awkward – over to the buckets that were kept in the room for her. One was filled with fresh water, which she drank from eagerly, and the other with small pieces of meat. Zezeth ate from that, too, until her rib-visible belly was bloated with food. Full, her thirst sated, Zezeth made her way back to the bed, and sat down at the edge of it, peering up at A’tay with that frank curiosity once more.

Dyoricath doesn’t like when people touch his rider. She said, her voice low again to avoid it either waking her rider, or being too easily overheard by others. Since she spoke in a low, husky register as a rule, she was less inclined to be overheard anyway. But there was no point in her blue brother hearing her gossiping about him! Zezeth had originally thought that Dyoricath knew something she didn’t, with the way he got upset when people got to close to his rider. But, as she frowned in her draconic way up at A’tay, with Madiquel so peacefully curled up on his lap, she wondered if perhaps Dyoricath wasn’t the one that didn’t know something she did.

Shifting her gaze from Madiquel’s peacefully sleeping face, Zezeth stood up again and shook herself out, wobbling when she upset her balance. Don’t wake her, she decided, nodding to herself. Moving back to the bed, Zezeth pulled herself up onto it, moving around much like a feline, until she was comfortably curled up regally at Madiquel’s pillow, her head resting on the soft surface and her head tilted so she could watch A’tay placidly, her expression thoughtful and curious.

A'tay was startled out of reading the short letter by Zezeth's voice and he stared at the dragonet with wide eyes. He hadn't expected her to talk while he was there, figuring he'd have to leave before she woke from her nap. But what did she mean by finally? Oh. A glance to Madiquel made it clear his friend was asleep and seemed like she was going to be that way for a while. He looked at the letter he was holding, wondering if she heard any of it, decided that was unlikely, and hoped she read it before Jajojin came--and killed him because Madiquel wasn't prepared or believed what she wanted.

Zezeth seemed to be doing well for only a day old and malnourished, A'tay thought as he watched her work her way across the room. She definitely wasn't stable on her feet but she was moving on her own and could feed as well. Both seemed like good signs to him! Maybe he'd pass that on to Jajojin. A'tay had no intentions of being a spy for him but it'd probably do him well to know the dragonet was already improving. This really was a worst case scenario for an ex-rider with a kid. Madiquel not only Impressed but to a sickly dragon that many didn't think would make it to a month old let alone graduation. Jajojin wouldn't be able to handle losing Madiquel whether she died or lost a part of her mind like he did, so reassurances that the pair was doing well might help him.

He nodded in agreement at the decision not to wake Madiquel, not even giving voice to it in case that would wake her. So he continued to watch Zezeth get comfortable and then they were having an accidental staring contest as the dragon stared at him. Suddenly unsure what to do, A'tay looked away and studied the paper he still held. She will be a wise dragon. She already watches and learns from everything around her.

A'tay nodded, forgetting for a moment that this voice in his head was one he could mentally reply to. He had been too focused on not moving or speaking, fearing he would wake Madiquel and it was clear she needed the rest if even Zezeth said as much. She's going to take care of DiDi, too. She's already so concerned for her well-being. He paused, wondering if he should add to the negative vibes, even if they were only in his head and shared with his dragon. His siblings sometimes teased him about how superstitious he could be but he couldn't help it.

She'll make it, right? Zezeth is already so much stronger than yesterday.

I think you answered your own question. They're both strong and will fight through their obstacles and win. Xyxyth was so confident, A'tay couldn't help but feel it as well and smiled. The smile extended to Zezeth and he gave a little nod, putting the final stamp of approval on the whole matter.

Still too afraid to move, A'tay leaned his head back against the wall and shut his eyes. He wasn't at all tired but it would stop him from being rude and staring at Zezeth.

Madiquel woke with that lazy, comfortable slowness that came from sleeping peacefully, which she felt like she hadn’t gotten to do in forever even though technically it had only been a couple of nights (she’d been too excited about coming to Ista to sleep properly before her Impression!) and the warmth of a body pressed against her and the familiar scent of… someone just made her sigh softly, content. At first, she thought she was curled up with her Papa, but that didn’t make any sense at all. She’d remember if her Papa had arrived, right? As soon as that thought entered, everything came rushing back, and she blinked at Zezeth (who was watching her silently from where she was resting on the pillow) and then glanced up cautiously at the underside of A’tay’s jaw. Madiquel blinked, and blushed a little. She hadn’t meant to fall asleep! She’d been so excited to see A’tay and he must think her so rude!

Shifting cautiously, trying not to wake A’tay who appeared to be asleep, Madiquel frowned at her dragonet, who just responded with a soft snort and the feeling of amusement. Madiquel sighed, and glanced against A’tay. Gosh, she was an awful friend! She’d fallen asleep and pinned him down and of course TayTay was much too sweet to shove her off so he could leave or eat or … she hoped he hadn’t needed to pee! How long had she been asleep? Oh, what a disaster!

Stop, Zezeth said softly, in her gravelly whisper, and Madiquel flinched and pouted at her dragon. The look, and the emotions she received, clearly indicated all her worrying was giving Zezeth a headache, and wasn’t going to change the past. Madiquel sighed dramatically, still pouting, and carefully untangled herself from A’tay and slipped out of the room, Zezeth watching her go.

Madiquel made a quick trip to the privy herself, the thought having inspired her own bladder, apparently, before darting into the kitchen and scrounging up some food for herself and A’tay, as well as two glasses of juice and a jug of water. She smiled thankfully at one of the assistants that insisted on helping her get it all back to her room, and completely missed the look he gave her and A’tay before leaving. Setting up a little picnic on the ground like Madiquel usually had with Rhaedalyn and the girls, or her Papa, and A’tay in the past (before dragons came along, primarily) Madiquel smiled to herself and looked up, squeaking when she found A’tay watching her.

A hand flying to her chest in surprise, Madiquel stared, before laughing softly at herself. “I thought you were still asleep!” She giggled, shaking her head before holding a hand out to A’tay in invitation to join her on the floor. “I’m so sorry I fell asleep, TayTay! That was very rude of me,” She sighed sadly, throwing a look at Zezeth who snorted at her and went about grooming her claws, as if she had ever had any kind of meat or gore under them to clean off.

“Tell me what’s been happening beyond my dragon,” Madiquel begged flushing again, “and um, what did Papa write?” Anxiety flooded her stomach, and she shifted uncomfortably, both at falling asleep and at whatever her Papa might have said.

Despite not being tired, A'tay found himself lightly drifting off from time to time as Madiquel's nap kept going. He spent most of the time talking with Xyxyth and sometimes he'd watch Zezeth who was usually watching him in return. A few times he ventured to have a conversation with the green dragon when it became clear Madiquel was zonked right out but Zezeth had gone silent, only giving little nods when A'tay figured out yes and no questions worked best. In the end, he tried to sleep if only because his legs had fallen asleep and it kind of hurt and he didn't want to think about it.

When Madiquel finally stirred, A'tay was in the middle of one of his not-quite-asleep moments and he continued staying still in case his friend was just rolling over in her sleep. He gathered from Zezeth that Madiquel needed the rest so he wasn't going to disturb her in any way. But then she was bolting from the bed and out the room and A'tay looked over at Zezeth who almost seemed to shrug in reply to his silent question of 'what the heck just happened?'

"Looks like I have two dragons now," A'tay joked with a smile when Madiquel didn't immediately come back. "Not sure I want to go through weyrlinghood again when I'm just about to graduate from it, though. No offense, Zezeth." He wondered if that would be the better option versus being a full dragonrider for years and then suddenly going through it all again. At least he was still used to the restrictions and the rules whereas his brother hadn't gone through it in like five years!

When Madiquel did return, she went right into a task that involved all the items she held and he watched, bemused but not wanting to interrupt her work. But maybe he should have, as he seemed to startle her when she glanced his way. Did she forget he was there? A'tay laughed and shook his head at her statement. "I was never actually asleep. And it's fine, not rude at all. You needed the sleep and apparently I'm a good pillow. R'dal will be pleased to hear that. Or maybe he'll be worried? I could be competition now for all the cuddles out there."

He was still smiling when he joined Madiquel at the picnic. He wasn't sure what suddenly prompted it but he was okay with it since he was getting a bit hungry. Honestly, his rumbling stomach was probably what woke Madiquel! He'd been too nervous to eat anything before seeing Jajojin and too afraid after to consider food. But now, food was good. Or it was until Jajojin was brought up again and he stopped reaching for the snack.

"The outside world is the same as usual, nothing exciting there. Though, everyone really wants to see all of you. Pretty sure Mylorah is close to either seducing a Healer or just camping out nearby so she can see you and the boys." His sister was a lot of things, and patient was sometimes one of them--but not since the Hatching. She was close to all three that Impressed and it was driving her crazy not being able to check in on any of them. A'tay was glad he wasn't an assistant or Healer and having to deal with her.

He couldn't delay the letter again so he reached back to the bed where the letter had been set and cleared his throat to read the words that he had practically memorized by that point. "My baby girl, you're probably having a rough time and I'm sorry I can't be there to help you. But I will be there soon. You know how hard that sort of travel is for me and my love for you is warring with my fears. Otherwise, I would have been there the moment I heard. But when I see the dragon meant to take me... I love you, my sweet girl. Papa"

A'tay fell silent as he finished reading but stared at the paper a moment longer. He had a feeling Madiquel would be crying and still blaming herself for Impressing and he didn't want to see her that upset. "He does love you, DiDi. I even saw him try to mount Zeianth for the trip over here today instead of sending me with the letter but... he couldn't." In fact, Jajojin had started crying and holding his head at what A'tay guessed were memories of climbing aboard Denath likely flooded back to him. But he couldn't tell Madiquel those details, knowing they would destroy her. At least he hadn't seen Xyxyth, the bronze wisely hiding up with Kadaisicalth in the blue's weyr until he was needed.
