Casa didn’t get out nearly enough, and for that reason, as soon as she heard some of the Weyr staff chattering about making the journey down to Ista Hold via Weyrlings to attend the Gather Day that was approaching, Casa just knew she had to go. She had never managed to go to a Gather before – first there was the whole born and raised in Katila thing, and then there was the fact that, well, she just couldn’t find the time. Someone always had a chore for her to do, or Thallyath was bossing her around (as she was wont to do) but not this time! Casa informed her dragon, quite firmly, that they would attend the Gather.

Surprisingly, Thallyath had agreed, but on the condition that Casa completed all her work. Casa had rolled her eyes, but then worked with gusto to complete all her tasks, getting well ahead of her work in her attempt to make sure her dragon didn’t deny her the fun of attending her first Gather. Thallyath had been amused, but pleased. She did not deny that Casa could work hard when she put her mind to it, and was delighted when Casa was the one that brought up a bath and an oiling the day before the Gather. She did, after all, need to appear her best before the Holders!

The day of the Gather, Casa was awake early, bright and eager to explore the events. She’d collected up all the Marks she was given monthly for her rank, and put them in three different purses, which she hid about her person. She’d heard tales of pick pockets and other such riffraff and had no desire to lose everything before she had a chance to spend it. Dressing tidily in a pair of flowing black pants that looked like a skirt, and a white blouse, Casa pulled on her sturdy boots and then set about putting Thallyath’s gear on her. It took longer than it should have, primarily because Casa didn’t do it with a great deal of frequency.

Before she knew it, they were gliding down to the Hold, Casa not liking to travel between if she could avoid it – especially when she wanted to wear her pretty jewellery! Casa watched with excitement as the Hold got closer, and she could see the Gather flags up around the main centre-square of the Hold, where stalls were set up and people were beginning to mill around. She squealed softly, giving her excitement a voice while they were still far enough away that she wouldn’t bring dishonour on herself, her dragon or their Weyr. Thallyath indulged her, for once not making a biting comment about her young rider.

Thallyath, the smallest gold by some measure, was still too big to land in the roads between the houses, and she settled for landing in the field on the outskirts of the Hold, grumbling about how she’d have to trust Casa to find her way into the Gather, and not get lost. It was Casa who suggested Thallyath fly overhead and direct her where to go if she were so worried, and Thallyath took to the idea with delight. She was soon back in the sky, her gold wings extended as she circled above Casa and instructed her where to go.

Okay! I made it! You can sun on a rooftop nearby. Casa looked around with eager delight at the stalls, the people, the excitement! Grinning, the girl made her way into the thick of it, looking around with interest and curiosity. There was so much to see, and the smells were delightful! She quickly made her way to a bakery stall, and bought a warm cinnamon roll, chewing on it contentedly as she set about exploring.

T’ryn was pretty excited to go to the Ista Hold’s Gather and had gotten up at a decent hour to prepare for it. He knew a lot of other riders were going to go later in the day, likely planning on drinking through the night and having their flings with each other or gullible Holders but T’ryn didn’t think he was ready for that level of debauchery yet. As it was, he hadn’t even had his first real kiss yet, finding himself far too confused over what he was interested in and what was expected of him as both a bronzerider and the son of a notorious playboy. So heading down late morning and staying a few hours seemed like a wise plan. He could socialize, shop, try some food, maybe even brave the dance floor but it didn’t seem likely he’d get himself in trouble. Perhaps afterward he’d go visit his now settled down playboy dad.

Syrendryth seemed pretty indifferent to the Gather and didn’t put up a fuss about heading out. They both knew he was good at socializing but interacting with a new group of people would be good practice for the future. He had no designs on being Weyrleader like N’mor seemed to but he wanted to be a Wingleader one day and he needed to know how to talk to all sorts of people and demand attention and respect from his wing and Holders alike.

When they landed, Syrendryth seemed content to find a clear shaded area to nap in so he could easily ignore other dragons and curious humans but also have a nice uninterrupted view of what T’ryn was up to as he listened in. T’ryn laughed at the large bronze, promising to behave and bring him something if he continued to behave. Syrendryth preferred to actually hunt for his food whether out of a herd or even in the lake, ducking for fish, but he’d occasionally take an additional treat.

His first stop was to a stall that led him there by scent alone. They were serving baked apples and his stomach rumbled despite eating a mere few hours ago. He quickly purchased one and nearly melted on the spot with his first bite. Warm and with the perfect amount of cinnamon. T’ryn was in heaven and his mood was soaring as he took to strolling through the stalls to see what else they had. Instead of food or interesting wares, a familiar head of blonde hair caught his eye and T’ryn hesitated, taking another bite of his apple. He really didn’t know Casa that well. Sure they had quick conversations in passing but he’d never bothered to really befriend her despite knowing he should given she rode gold and he rode bronze. One day they might end up in a flight together and T’ryn wondered if it was better to know the person or not in such a case.

While I agree you should socialize more with goldriders, couldn’t you pick a better one than her? She has no focus, seems ditzy, and is beneath you in maturity and intelligence, Syrendryth had been too quiet and when the silky smooth voice touched upon his mind, T’ryn knew why. His dragon seemed to think they were a cut above everyone and was opinionated, though thankfully he didn’t like speaking to others so no one knew how they were viewed. T’ryn was the only one that got to deal with it and he usually just gave an eye roll when he wasn’t in the mood to debate. Like now; though he thought it odd either of them could judge her when they didn’t have anything to truly base their opinions off of.

“Morning, Casa,” he greeted with a smile and, unfortunately, a slight flush that crept through his cheeks. They were close in age and she was rather pretty. He was confused, not blind! “Is this your first Gather as well?” Of course it likely was! They were both born in Katila and were too young or newly Impressed to travel to any other Gather a Hold may have invited them to, depending on if they had gotten over their hatred or not.

You sure she’s the ditzy one out of the two of us, Sy At least his dragon had the courtesy to only snort in laughter and not say anything.

Casa was examining a stall full of beautiful art, some of it framed with wood, metal, or even a couple of carefully carved stone frames! The artwork within was usually scenic, though there were some generic portraits. There were no dragons or firelizards, which Casa found disappointing, but really the dragonriders hadn't been around in the public view for very long, and a lot of the work before her had dates back several years, though some was quite recent. She smiled at the stall holder, and poked around curiously. She'd like some more pieces for her weyr. She had a couple of pieces from B'jin – her Weyrlingmaster had been prone to gifting them all with art during their class days – but she wanted more, but also didn't want to bother the greenrider with requests.

The sound of her name startled her out of her idle thoughts and gently curious hands, and Casa turned to look behind her, a smile flickering over her lips as she took in the sight of T'ryn. She didn't really know the bronzerider well, they hadn't run in the same circles despite being in the same weyrling group. Casa felt she'd been excluded from the other riders, mostly due to the requirement of her additional lessons regarding her silly dragons shiny hide. It wasn't fair, and she'd hated it, but it was what it was. “Morning, T'ryn,” her smile flashed warm, and she felt Thallyath poke around the edge of her mind to see who she was talking to. The dragons hum was neither approving nor disapproving, but she was clearly monitoring Casa's interaction.

“It is!” she exclaimed, suddenly beaming, despite the way Thallayth pressed her disapproval on her; a goldrider should not be so childishly exuberant! Casa ignored her, as she was prone to doing, and continued to gush. “Isn't it marvellous? What do you have there? I had a cinnamon roll and it was divine. This artwork is rather spectacular too, but I haven't found one that wants to come home with me.” She pouted playfully, then smiled again before taking on the vague look of someone talking to her dragon, as Thallyath scolded her and Casa rolled her eyes, and returned her attention to T'ryn. “Thally is such a bore. You wouldn't believe the hoops she made me jump through before she'd bring me down!” She sighed dramatically. “Does Syrendryth do that to you?” She asked, curiously, as the vendor realised her attention had been completely diverted and turned his attention to other customers.

T'ryn's smile stayed in place but he had no idea how. Perhaps it was simply frozen there as he tried to take in all the words and energy coming from Casa. Why did he think this was a good idea again? The girl didn't seem to stop talking and jumped through so many topics in a matter of a couple of breaths that T'ryn was sure if he tried to answer the first question, she'd already forget what it was she asked and think him daft. But since it would be terribly rude to simply turn around and walk away as if they never saw each other, T'ryn opted to go with his plan of socializing and talk with her. Besides, they could become best friends. N'mor was now and back then he was a bit cold and not all that interested in talking until he was pestered enough.

"Um, no, not really. Sy is pretty chill and usually goes along with what I've planned," and he did plan. T'ryn loved puzzles and working out the best strategy to use for unique situations so he supposed his dragon had enough confidence in his ability to plan out his day that he didn't harp on him regularly, knowing all of his tasks would get done. "He won't hesitate to point something out, though, if he does find fault in it." He didn't think telling Casa that the opinions were usually on other riders was a brilliant idea. No doubt that would lead to her asking what Syrendryth thought of her and he knew for a fact that he wasn't that great at lying. Shall we make a list of people I do tolerate so you can spend time with them and not worry about lying? T'ryn did his best to ignore the dragon and not give away that he was being spoken to.

He tried to distract himself from Syrendryth's opinions by recalling what else Casa had said and a glance to his hands brought about the fact that she had mentioned food and he latched onto that topic like a flitter to a stolen bit of food. "And it's a baked apple, by the way. With a bit of sugar and cinnamon. It's quite good. Would you like to try it?" He held out the apple before realizing that it probably wasn't proper to offer a young lady something he had just been eating. Then again, they were both weyr bred and sharing wasn't seen as scandalous like it might be in Holds. He had a feeling he was spending too much time with his cousins and their odd opinions on things were starting to mess with his head.

“You're lucky,” Casa said wistfully, ignoring the way Thallyath growled under her breath and disapproved loudly in Casa's mind “Sometimes I don't know why she chose me,” she confided, frowning slightly. Why would a dragon pick someone with whom she was constantly at odds and displeased with? Don't be so dramatic. You just need to learn decorum. Thallyath inserted primly, not at all fazed by the common sulking of Casa. One day her young rider would learn what it means to be a proper lady, but Thallyath knew it wasn't going to happen any time soon, no matter how much she harped on about it. “Thallyath finds fault with everything I do,” Casa grumbled, but she shrugged. Their relationship was filled with a lot of bickering, but Casa did love her dragon, and she would do what she could to make her happy, in the end, anyway.

Casa raised her eyebrows as the topic of conversation returned to food, and she smiled. “Sure!” she grinned, though she could feel Thallyath's displeasure; proper ladies did not share food with random men, and she herself would certainly not share her food with just any bronze! Casa didn't bother to make a comment on the other colours, she already knew that Thallyath considered anything below a bronze unworthy of her time and attention.

Leaning forward, Casa took a delicate bite of the food that was offered, and chewed thoughtfully. She smiled brightly once she'd swallowed, green eyes bright. “That's amazing!” She gushed, wondering where it was T'ryn had gotten it from. She'd certainly have to go and find the stall and get a whole one for herself. Perhaps I'll even get you one, she teased Thallyath, who hummed disinterestedly. “You'll have to show me where you got it,” she smiled. “I think I'll need a whole one in a couple of hours!” Her belly was still full enough from her cinnamon roll that she was content to wait.

“Do you want to browse some of the stalls with me?” Casa asked, perhaps a little eagerly as her eyebrows were drawn together over her eyes as she looked up at T'ryn. It would be a fair comment to say that Casa was lonely; her most common socialising was done with other goldriders, and each of them was just as busy as she was, and they didn't get to spend a lot of time just hanging out and having fun like she'd seen almost all of the other riders able to do. She honestly expected it would only get worse in the future, too. She was not really looking forward to being sandbound alongside Thallyath in the slightest.

“Don’t think of it as her finding your faults. You complement each other and fill in each other’s gaps. Sy’s there to bolster me up when I need it,” usually, anyway. His dragon was excellent for his morale and giving him the boost of confidence that was needed when it flagged on him, which he wasn’t doing right then. Perhaps he was doing well on his own for once when it came to trying something new that he wasn’t too comfortable with. Or, more likely, Syrendryth had decided to have a nap, already fed up with his mingling of the so-called lesser folk.

He smiled at Casa as she complimented his choice in snacks. “Right? I’m not a big fan of super sweet things so this is just perfect for me,” that was something else people probably thought odd about him. His dad’s sweet tooth was as legendary as his sleeping around and T’ryn didn’t enjoy either—at least not yet. He’d have to actually try sex before deciding if he wanted to bed hop. Growing up was becoming quite the challenge! And here he thought Impressing and becoming a wingleader was going to be the two biggest hurdles he’d face.

“I’d love to,” T’ryn brightened at the invitation to tag along with her, convinced now that he hadn’t eaten his foot just yet and they were enjoying each other’s company. “Are you done with this stall though? Didn’t you say you were trying to find some art? Or maybe we can see if there’s another art stall to peruse first,” he saw the stall keeper glance at him and frown and T’ryn gave a little uneasy laugh as he made eye contact. Probably wasn’t the best idea to suggest too loudly that a merchant was lacking in selection or quality.

“Shall we?” T’ryn, taking a page from the books of the Holders he saw interact at his aunt’s, T’ryn held out his arm for Casa to loop hers with. It didn’t occur to him that it might be a forward thing to do, just something polite and it was a way to ensure they wouldn’t get separated due to wandering eyes or differing stalls.

Casa didn't bother to reply to T'ryn's attempt to reassure her about her relationship with Thallyath. He couldn't hear the snarky things her dragon said to her when she was displeased; of course, the love and warmth that Thallyath was able to counter it with when Casa did something her dragon approved of, or simply because Thallyath was feeling affectionate, more than made up for it. But the criticism still stung, especially a young woman who had once been so ridiculously confident in who she was and who she would be. It was hard, being someone a gold dragon felt she should be... Dresses and slippers and walking demurely when all Casa wanted to do was run and jump and go swimming all day. Casa sighed dramatically.

Casa's expression lit up when T'ryn agreed to accompany her on an exploration of the stalls, and Casa beamed up at him, bouncing slightly on the balls of her feet, even as she felt Thallyath sigh and scold her for not being a lady – it simply wasn't proper for a woman to show so much enthusiasm around a man. Better to make him work for her affections, not drown him in them because he agreed to go for a walk with you! Casa ignored her dragon, as she was growing more and more used to doing. “We can move on,” Casa smiled, tossing the expression at the stall keeper and hoping it looked as charming as she hoped it did. “I will probably be back,” she promised the man, though he didn't really look particularly convinced.

Turning back to T'ryn, Casa was surprised by the arm that was extended to her, but grinned happily and took a dancing step to settle herself beside him. While Thallayth wasn't particualrly impressed by Casa's lack of decorum, she was impressed by T'ryn's proper gentlemanly invitation. Much better than his offering food to her rider, though the frank dragon was wondering if he was trying to court her rider. That wouldn't do at all; she didn't know nearly enough about his dragon (despite their being from the same clutch) to ensure he was a good mate. It probably wouldn't have mattered, anyway. Thallyath was rather more inclined towards older dragons, much to Casa's nose scunching disapproval.

“Let's!” Casa cheered, wrapping her arm lightly through T'ryn's and standing politely close; not so far away as to make him think she was unwilling to be close to him, but nor so close as to be inappropriate – to her own thinking, or her dragon's!
