742.23.02 | Midnight Reassurance - B'kit - 24.Feb.21

They were falling, screams ripped away by the vicious wind. The flashes of blinding light were made worse by the driving snow, and above it all the cacophony of the thunder pounded in his bones. The smell of burnt flesh and the taste of metal made him sick but the fear and pain were the worst. Everything hurt; he couldn’t tell where his pain ended and Erebuth’s began or if they were even separate at all.

B’kit thrashed in his sleep, caught in the nightmare he’d lived through such a short time ago, the memory amplified by the fellis he was still taking to supposedly help his sleep. Erebuth’s tail lashed violently, still sleeping himself, and his good wing flared as if trying to break their fall. Siolilth had moved away after the blue settled for the night, as she usually did, but not far enough to evade the thrash of his tail which startled her awake.

He was burning and freezing, the icy air and snow finding gaps in his jacket and gloves. Not the numbing cold of between, but a wet, enveloping cold. And still the smell of ozone and the crackling charge of the air was pressing in on him, smothering him.

Kitt woke with a start, thrashing against the tangle of covers half thrown away during the night. The fire had burnt down, and a draft whistled around the corner from the dragons’ hollows. He tried to scramble out of bed to check on Erebuth but a cramp seized his leg and he bit back a cry as he crumpled and caught the bedpost to avoid falling, not even noticing that J’shom had woken up too.
