740.11.30 | Seeking a Messenger - Helyna - 30.Nov.19

Helyna stalked the halls, irked as she searched for someone she could entrust with a packet. She’d just had a firelizard from Vaeyla asking after the fabric Lyna had promised to arrange for the Turn End celebration, and it annoyed her that she hadn’t found a responsible enough person to take it over. The fabric had been sitting carefully wrapped in her weyr ever since she’d picked it up personally from the Weavercrafhall a week ago, but she’d found herself far too busy to pop over to Ista and now Iliyith was proddy and she didn’t dare risk the trip.

Why not just send a weyrling with it? There are plenty of them running around underfoot. Helyna rolled her eyes with a sigh. Honestly, was she the only one concerned about sending this properly? She might as well send it with a dusty old runner at that point! I can’t do that. What if it got soiled? It would be ruined and then what would be the point of doing the favor in the first place?

She spotted a familiar form-one of the new searchriders; what the hell was his name again? The one with boundless energy and optimism which seemed to amuse half the weyr and annoy the rest. Edath’s rider. Iliyith prompted, less than helpfully. Yes, I remember the dragon, it’s the rider’s name I’ve misplaced. Oh to hell with it, she thought, and walked over to where he stood talking with another rider with-oh, that was convenient-Istan badges on his riding jacket. An Istan greenrider; perfect!

She put on her best charming smile as she drew closer; something about catching more flies with honey than traps which had been taught to her from a young age. “Sorry to interrupt,” the name finally came to her and she added it smoothly, “R'dal. When you have a moment, I need to borrow your Istan friend before he returns home. I need to send something important over to Ista and I don’t trust the weyrlings not to muck it up.”
