740.11.24 | Out of Breath - B'kit - 24.Nov.19

B’kit climbed easily up his favorite route on the face of the Weyrbowl. It had been ages since he’d been allowed to climb, and he’d missed it; the scrape of the rock on fingers whose calluses were worn away, the slight ache of muscles unused for months. Erebuth was waiting for him up on the ledge, peering over and eyes swirling with mild anxiety. I’ve done this hundreds of times, Re. Stop worrying, he reassured the blue, reaching for another handhold with practiced ease. Erebuth grumbled and settled down, resting his head on his front feet with a huge sigh. B’kit smiled at the theatrics and found a new foothold.

As soon as he shifted his weight he knew something was wrong. The stone crumbled and his grip tightened reflexively as he flailed for another support. He felt his grip loosen and heard Erebuth’s startled cry as he fell. He felt more than saw the blue dive after him and a scream burbled up in his throat as the ground rushed toward him. Erebuth shrieked, claws outstretched and wings straining, then-

Black, oppressive cold surrounded him. He was still falling, still screaming, even as the darkness swallowed the sound and his breath. Where was Erebuth? How was he between without his dragon?

B’kit!

He couldn’t breathe; couldn’t find Erebuth!

B’kit! Open your eyes!

Kitt woke with a start, clawing at the sheets tangled around him, desperate to reach his dragon. Flinging his arms around the blue’s neck, Kitt sobbed into the soft skin. “I thought I’d lost you-I couldn’t breathe-I fell, I was between and you weren’t there.” He was rambling, still half caught in the dream.

I’m right here. I won’t leave you, B’kit. You are mine and I won’t leave you. It’s okay. Erebuth comforted his distressed rider until B’kit finally fell asleep again, curled protectively around him.
