740.08.22 | Baths and Busybodies - B'kit - 23.Aug.19

Can’t we just skip the bath and go back for an oiling? Erebuth whined, staring doubtfully at the water. Oiling is so much nicer he added wistfully.

“You know that the sooner we start, the sooner we can go back to the weyr and have a nice long oiling,” B’kit reminded the blue. The weyrling had grown a little bit over the past few weeks but was still small enough to carry. B’kit crouched and opened his arms, and the reluctant dragon let himself be picked up and carried into the shallows.

Erebuth grumbled as he was lowered into the sun-warmed water. “You don’t see Dyoriath or Zezeth fussing about their baths,” his rider chided gently as he began to gently scrub off flaky bits of skin.

We could have a bath in our weyr. We have water there. Kitt sighed as he figured out what was really bothering the blue, who normally loved baths. He stroked his dragon’s neck, feeling him tremble slightly. “It’s good to get out in the fresh air. We’ve been cooped up inside too much. Besides, it’s good for people to see us; to see how strong you’re becoming. We won’t be out long,” he reassured Erebuth, resuming the bath. Humming a soothing song, he felt his dragon slowly relax despite the eyes on them.

RE: 740.08.22 | Baths and Busybodies - Matrim - 25.Aug.19

Eyes were indeed on the young weyrling pair. Matrim was down at the beach enjoying a swim and taking advantage of the warm water to give Junko a thorough scrubbing. The tall candidate's attention was brought to the new arrivals by a cheerful chirp from the little brown firelizard and he raised a hand in greeting, wading in B'kit's direction, "Yo."

Somehow, Junko managed to stay out of the water as his bonded approached the weyrling pair. He scrambled up Mat's arm, leaving a trail of sticky sand on the beastcrafter-candidate's arm and shoulders as he draped himself around the man's neck, "I'd like to breathe, Junko..." Matrim tried to pry the chubby brown loose, but sighed when he just slithered a little further around his neck.

B’kit laughed as the firelizard scattered sand everywhere. Nutty was off who-knew-where, so at least he didn’t have to worry about squabbles breaking out. “Hi there,” he replied with a smile, stroking Erebuth’s neck to keep him calm. “Good day for a swim?”

He offered a hand to the young man; though he’d seen him at one or two hatchings he hadn’t ever introduced himself. “Be-” he cut himself off, “B’kit, of Erebuth. You were at… Telgar? Have you transferred to Ista, or were you just here for the hatching?”

Erebuth, still a little dubious about the pair, lingered close to Kitt’s legs, though at least he’d kept some of his calm from earlier. That was progress, B’kit thought, and hopefully he’d remain calm through the encounter. He continued to scrub gently at the itchy dry spots where skin was flaking, humming again in between conversation.

Matrim smirked and nodded, trying to brush wet sand off of his arm (which wasn't very effective because his hand was wet, too), "Oh yeah. The water's nice and warm." Junko chitters curiously at Erebuth, apparently fascinated by a blue dragon so close in size to him.

The beastcrafter leaned down to rinse the sand off of his hand before clasping hands firmly, "Matrim." He chuckled, "Friends call me Mat." One shoulder came up in a shrug, earning an irritated grumble from the brown firelizard, "The first clutch I stood for was there. I asked to be posted here after your lot hatched." His smirk turned into a smug smile, "It's an excellent learning opportunity, you know."

"Oh, I'm beastcraft. I'm trying to learn as much as possible about dragon healing." It was an explanation, of sorts, anyway. And hopefully meant that B'kit didn't take offense to his desire to study the dragonets.

RE: 740.08.22 | Baths and Busybodies - B'kit - 26.Aug.19

Kitt’s eyebrow arched as Matrim explained his presence and smiled smugly about the ‘learning opportunity’ provided by the weyrlings. He’d never appreciated arrogance, and coming from a candidate it was particularly offensive. Which search dragon thought someone like that would make a good rider, he wondered. Granted, people could change, but something about this young man rubbed him the wrong way.

“You’ll find they’re rather different crafts. Since dragons aren’t beasts.” He replied somewhat cooly. “But we can always do with more dragonhealers. Too much knowledge has been lost over the Turns.”

Erebuth fidgeted, picking up on the tension in his rider’s voice. He also didn’t like how the firelizard was chittering at him. Why is Nutmeg on his shoulder and acting like he doesn’t know me? And when did he become fat?

B’kit stifled a laugh and patted the blue’s neck as the message was broadcast across the lake unintentionally. “That isn’t Nutty, Erebuth. He’s Matrim’s brown. And it’s rude to call someone fat.” Even if he did agree with the blue that the lizard was rather rolly-polly.

RE: 740.08.22 | Baths and Busybodies - Matrim - 26.Aug.19

"It's still a good learning opportunity." Mat shrugged, "I'm sure they are different. They also need to have people with the knowledge to make sure they stay healthy." He didn't exactly mention the plague that happened before he was even born, but it's obvious that's what he was thinking of.

Junko's chittering wasn't aggressive. It could even be interpreted as friendly. Mat blinked a couple of times when he heard Erebuth's question and shook his head, addressing the rider, "Well, he is fat." He made a face, "It's my fault he is, really. He's a lazy bugger and I let him overeat." He craned his head to try to look at his little friend, still wrapped around his neck, his voice turned thoughtful, "I really need to fix that..." Sounds like someone is about to go on a diet.

Matrim didn't seem to notice that he'd figuratively stepped in it with the young rider pair.

“I suppose,” B’kit granted, ignoring the vague reference to the plague and finished scrubbing Erebuth down, scooping warm water over the blue to wash away the soapsand. “Goodness knows I’ve seen more healers in the past couple weeks than I ever want to see in my life, though. Friendly and knowledge-seeking as they are, it’s… a bit grating after a while.” Being constantly reminded that this whole thing was so tenuous. Better not to dwell on that though; the dragonets were all slowly filling out, though all were still small for their age. And their partners were finding that all of them were stubborn in their own way.

He offered a small smile for the fat little brown flit, trying to let the feeling of being rubbed the wrong way by the candidate roll off. “My Nutmeg was lazy too, till he found some friends. Now he’s a little instigator, always off playing when he’s not curled up with Erebuth.”

The blue glanced over at Junko, who wasn’t that different from Nutty, he supposed. Just more chatty. And bigger. I thought he was my friend, but he isn’t. He’s yours. Sorry I called him fat. Erebuth shook off the water from his wings and looked up at Kitt hopefully. Now can we go back? “Sure,” B’kit replied. “You’ll have to dry off on the ledge though. I’m not oiling you wet again- that was too messy.”
