Logan slipped into the room he shared with Sariel since they had started dating earlier in the turn. He had tried to be quiet, since her already brief sleep had been interrupted more and more by her advancing pregnancy, but the light in the room proved he hadn’t needed to bother; she was still up, reading in bed.

Their shared classes had ended hours ago but he had rounds afterwards and had been pulled into a surgery as a spare pair of steady hands. Logan yawned expansively, exhausted and began to change for bed. He perched on the edge and kissed her briefly. “What are you still doing up, Bell? Are you feeling all right?”

It seemed he was incapable of turning off being a healer, he thought as he caught himself automatically checking her pulse and scanning for any other symptoms. He was being stupid; she was 5 months pregnant and a light sleeper, of course she was fine, just her usual insomniac self. He gave her a small apologetic smile for the hovering and slipped the hand from her wrist down over her belly instead, where it rested over the bump forming there.

"I'm alright," she murmured, covering his hand with hers. "I thought I'd catch up on some hide-work and then I had to elevate my legs. Some swelling." Sariel shrugged a little but grinned. "Nothing worse than anything I've had in the last few days."

She gently removed his hand and turned it over before placing a gentle kiss in the centre of his palm. Her smile was soft and lazy instead of her usual intense scrutiny as she laid it back on her stomach. It was a bump, really. The first time
she felt a little flutter, it startled her.

"There's more movement when you're close," she said languidly, shifting in the furs.

“I’m just being a worry-wart,” Logan said with a smile. Ever since she had told him about the pregnancy he had been by turns elated and petrified. He still felt like a kid, despite his journeyman status; how could he possibly raise one?

He looked up when Sariel mentioned the baby moved more with him there, surprised. “Really?” The flutters were still tiny now, hardly visible against her belly, though he knew from his mom’s pregnancies with his younger siblings that eventually they would be able to see limbs straining against their confines as the baby stretched and kicked. He had only felt the movement twice since she first started to feel it move and he was always excited when it happened.

“I suppose she just prefers my company to yours,” he teased, dodging a playful cuff aimed his way with a laugh. “She’s with you all day long and you never rest so she needs a chance to get her own point across.” They had no way of knowing if the child would be a boy or a girl, but Logan had taken to referring to “her” rather than the sterile and clinical “it” or worse, “the fetus.” That felt too impersonal, and honestly he hoped for a little girl.

"Maybe so," she murmured with a soft smile. "Then again, you come when I'm finally still. Maybe mama moves too fast?" She was more and more exhausted these days. Klah, thank goodness, was not an issue and she could drink it enough to get her job done. But there was still that itch that said she needed to be faster, That drive in her to make medical progress.

"At present, the point most definitely is to move less at least for a few hours." She looked a bit annoyed and shook her head.

"I am particularly fussy with my weekly calendar.'

“I suppose that’s true too,” he admitted. “You’re always flitting around faster than a firelizard,” Logan teased gently. “Hopefully our child will be a little slower paced, if only so I can catch them now and then.”

He stole another kiss and smoothly stole her hidework as well, which he set on the side table. He silenced her protest with another kiss, then rested his head against hers. “I know,” he said, “but an hour or two won’t get those hidebound idiots to open themselves to a woman Healer any faster. It’s okay to rest and savor the slower moments,” he reminded her gently, squeezing her hand.

Logan pressed a kiss behind her ear as he shifted to rub the tension from her shoulders and neck. He knew it was one of few things which she would actually slow down for. “Working yourself to death won’t prove anything to the others, and it definitely won’t help your patients, which you know, Sariel.” He kept up the massage as long as he could, hiding a yawn in her hair, hoping to relax her enough to sleep a while.
