740.01.18 | Determined To Learn - Zellera - 02.Mar.19

Zellera walked to the dining hall. There was no new clutch on the sands yet, so she was trying to keep herself busy. But she got an idea, she had heard that the gold candidates were going to be able to start healing lessons now, and she really wanted to become a dragonhealer. Even if she never impressed, she would still be able to help in some way, right? She heard a small chirp in her right ear and she looked at Pheonix. "Yes, I will bring food along with for you." This got a happy response from the firelizard and she smiled softly. Pheonix seemed to be the only real thing she would talk to, unless she was being forced to talk, that was when she would talk. She would just be nervous while talking though. But she went to the kitchens and asked for a bowl of meat chunks for Pheonix before she left with a polite thank you.

Her next stop, was to talk to the Weyrleader. She knew that she needed his permission to be able to even try and do what she wanted to do. So she headed to his office and she asked for his permission. The conversation lasted for about ten minutes. He asked her questions on if she was sure that this was something that she wanted, and her answer was a determined and firm, "Yes". That was when he called the very searchrider that had brought her here, V'rin. She looked at the greenrider and she gave a soft smile. He walked her over to Solneth and she gently pet the green's head before she was helped onto the dragon's back. She made sure that Phoenix gave back the empty bowl before they left, just to be sure that the kitchens had that still.

The trip between lasted a few seconds, but it was still strange to her. She took a moment after V'rin helped her down and she gave him a small nod when he said that he would still be here to take her back. "Thank you V'rin, and you Solneth." She head the small coon from the green before she looked toward the Healer's Hall then. She took a deep breath and walked toward the doors. She didn't know if the Masterhealer had gotten the missive from the Weyrleader yet stating that Zellera would be here, but here she was, hoping. She wanted nothing more to be able to help, whether as a candidate, a dragonrider, or even just a crafter after she aged out. She walked into the Hall, and with her soft voice called out. "Hello, I am here to talk to Masterhealer Verec."

Her voice was soft, but thankfully, not shaky this time talking. It had been shaking when she spoke to the Weyrleader not mere minutes before, and she was scared that her shyness was going to get her denied. She knew one thing though, that she was determined to do this, and that she was going to prove herself.

RE: 740.01.18 | Determined To Learn - Verec - 03.Mar.19

Verec sometimes wondered if R’nya was actively trying his patience. The last three gold Candidates the Weyrleader had sent were utterly unsuitable to the craft, and Verec had rejected all of them as Apprentices. The second of the three he’d spoken to for about a minute before sending her home. She so obviously had no interest in being there, Verec had no idea why R’nya had even bothered. Was he just trying to send all of them in hopes a sufficient number would be allowed to stay? Did any of them, other than Madiquel, the first of his interviewees, have any interest in being Healers? He didn’t have any proof of it yet.

There was another one today — R’nya had sent a message not long ago that he was sending her over shortly. Because clearly the Masterhealer had nothing better to do than wait for a dragonrider to throw children who had no interest in what he was offering to teach them at him on a whim. Hmph. Well, might as well see what pretense he could send this one away on.

One of his Journeyman brought her to his office, after making her wait a good fifteen minutes, and Verec looked up from the report from one of the Healers stationed in Benden Hold long enough to acknowledge her presence before going back to his reading, deciding to make her wait even more. It was an unnecessary display, but Verec liked having as much control over the situation at hand as possible. Making people wait on his whim was an easy way to exert a modicum of control over the people around him.

“Why are you here?” He turned the page of the report, skimming the Healer’s list of supplies he was requesting the Hall send to help the Hold restock after an outbreak of a minor illness. How would she respond to the question, Verec wondered. Confusion? An attempt to be clever? Assuming he was asking about why she was in his office (and interview) and not the root of that reason (the motivation for attending the interview). He was curious to see what sort of person he had in front of him today.

She half wondered if she had done something already. She had been escorted to Masterhealer Verec's office by a Journeyman healer, and she could kind of tell that that Journeyman didn't like her. Did someone else mess this up for candidates already? She was walking into this interview now worried that she was going to be denied, but instead, she was basically being ignored. He did acknowledge her being there, but he had gone back to reading his paperwork. She didn't really mind it honestly, because that meant that he wanted to make sure that things were taken care of properly. So instead of doing anything to make sure that her presence was truly known, she just stayed in her spot and looked around the room.

She knew that it was going to be full of paperwork, just because he was the Masterhealer. But she was soon taken from her thoughts when he did finally speak to her. There was no introduction, now how are you, no can i get you anything. No, instead, it was straight to the point of why she was here. She knew that he wasn't going to want to basic and obvious answer. No, she had the feeling that he wanted an answer that was deserving of why she was here and why she wanted to be here. So she took a moment to think on her answer. She had a feeling that it might come off as her trying to do to him what he had done to her, but that was far from the case.

"I want to be able to help. I want to help everyone, including dragonkin. I hate seeing people and creatures in pain, it pains me." Her voice was soft, but held a firm stance on her beliefs on why she was there. There was no shakiness in it, which was slightly abnormal, but maybe that was because she was picking at her nails. She was trying to keep her nail picking out of his sight, and she was hoping that she wasn't going to get nervous enough to turn it into the full fledged nail biting that she does do while nervous.

Well, it seemed she had at least some ability to understand complex questions. One of the last girls had said ‘because the Weyrleader told me to be,’ which was completely unacceptable. Verec refused to allow people who thought that way to become Apprentices whenever he possibly could. He could think of only one example where the person had made a good Healer, and he was an exception, not the rule. Usually it just lead to a bored, uninterested teenager resenting their classes which was a waste of everyone’s time.
So she didn’t get herself thrown out on the first question. Too early to call that promising, but it least the interview wasn’t an abject failure. Plenty of time for her to prove herself unsuitable, still. Perhaps is was wrong of Verec to assume the worst, but it was better for everyone if the people who would lose interest or hate Healing didn’t start in the first place. They’d be happier elsewhere, and Verec could focus his energies on the people it could best serve. Better for everyone involved than accepting everyone willy nilly.

Time for another question.

“If it pains you to see others in pain, how will you manage being a Healer?” Verec asked with a feigned nonchalance, “A Healer sees more pain than anyone else. A Healer will inevitably see some of those under their care suffer and die. How will you handle that, Zellera?”
