738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - Theodosia - 16.May.18

Holy hell, it was hot!

Theodosia, although if you ever called her that she'd kill you, stepped out of the Barracks, and almost instantly regretted it. She only took a few steps, and she was already beginning to sweat. Likely for others, they wouldn't have such a problem with it, but having only left the North a few days before, she hadn't ever gotten the chance to become accustomed to the heat.

Looking around, her singular eye landed on the Hatching Grounds. Like many new Candidates, they called to her, and so she obeyed. After all, she had free time for now, so why not? As she tromped across, booted feet sinking into the ground, she reached up to adjust her eye-patch. It was the medical grade one, made of wrappings that covered her eye. It was better at absorbing sweat, and felt more comfortable than her cotton one.

The doors to the Hatching Grounds were heavy, and she had to push rather hard to get them open. When she did, she was met with a blast of heat that left her panting, squinting against it. She forced her way through, feeling sand give way beneath her boots. The white of the sand was near blinding, and she had to take a moment to squint, trying to adjust to it.

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - D'hys - 16.May.18

D'hys watched with some amusement as a girl -- possibly a new Candidate but it wasn't like he knew all the drudges by face either -- snooped around the entrance to the Hatching Ground. When she finally managed to get the door open, he decided she was a new Candidate, since everyone else would know better than to go on the Sands without permission. He knew some of the weyrbrats still dared one another to do it, especially when Aradissicath was on the Sands since her reputation made it all the more daring to approach, but this didn't seem to be the case.

He waited until she entered and then followed, casually leaning on the door frame as he called out, "Aradissicath has been known to eat curious Candidates that get too close without permission, you know." It wasn't true, of course, and in fact, there weren't even any eggs on the Sands right then. Maybe he'd get around to telling that to the girl eventually but, for the moment, he was more interested in her reaction and finding out who she was.

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - Theodosia - 19.May.18

The Hatching Grounds were hot, and almost instantly she began to sweat. Even through her leather boots, the sands scorched at her feet, and she shifted her weight in an attempt at lessening the burn. The sand crunched beneath her feet, and vaguely she remembered that the sand was at least partially made up of the shells from Hatchings passed, being crushed beneath the feet and tails of Dragons. How many Candidates had stood on these sands? How many Candidates had Impressed where she stood? How many Hatchlings had been born on these Sands?

Her single grey eye scanned the area around here, trying to imagine it as it would on a Hatching Day. There would be countless people in the stands, all eager to see the Candidates Impress. And, she knew, some would have a sick curiosity, wanting to see a Dragonet Between. Although, she was fairly certain that was normal. No one wanted it to happen, but there was a morbid interest in how, and what, would happen.

She had only just begun to walk forward when a deep, male's voice called out. Theodosia would never allow herself to jump, but her surprise was given away by the set of her shoulders. The raven-haired girl turned to see a tall man leaning against the door frame. He was definitely tall, and she had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze.

A sheepish grin spread across her lips as he spoke, and she reached up to rub the back of her neck, feeling her hair stick to her skin from the sweat. "Aradissicath?" she echoed, tilting her head. The newest Candidate walked forward to approach him, stepping carefully. Having one eye did not lend well to depth-perception, and she didn't want to trip on the sand dunes, that'd be embarrassing. "My apologies, I only arrived here today. I don't know most anyone's name yet."

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - D'hys - 20.May.18

He had been right; she was a new Candidate. A new Candidate that apparently hadn’t been told anything by her Searchrider or the Weyrlingmaster, it seemed. Weren’t they supposed to rundown the rules pretty much upon landing at the Weyr? Perhaps he should point that out to R’nya so he could look into protocol. D’hys could only imagine the Weyrleader’s expression upon hearing the news of wandering Candidates if Aradissicath was on the Sands and Rhaedalyn was there baby-sitting her. He was extremely protective and a part of his cold heart could almost find that charming. Almost.

“Aradissicath is the WeyrWoman’s gold dragon. She’s very possessive of the Sands when she’s bound to them and can be rather cranky most days if she’s egg heavy.” D’hys was actually kind of fond of the gold dragon when she was in those moods. She scared the young kids of the Weyr and the holdbred who didn’t know any better with her threats to eat them or sit on them. He doubted she actually would, unless one of them somehow did manage to harm one of her eggs but it was still fun to see the terror in their eyes and the building of respect for dragons. Just because one dragon decided a kid could be a rider, didn’t mean a spoiled holder knew the first thing about respect of dragons or had the wits about them to bond with one.

“However, you’re in luck and not a single gold is on the Sands at the moment. Still, this area is always off limits unless the goldrider or your Weyrlingmaster invites you on.” He must have been in a good mood, D’hys decided, as he simply pointed out the rules to the girl instead of scaring her with threats. Then again, he could still tack those on. He’d hate to gain a reputation of being kind and soft. “If you happen to do it again, though, you’re likely going to enjoy some of the worst chores no one ever wants to do and if breaking rules continue, you could be sent back home.” Actually, he wasn’t sure if that rule still existed. He vaguely remembered it being a thing pre-plague but since returning North, everyone seemed rather well-behaved and no one was in need of being banished from the Weyr.

“What is your name, Candidate?” D’hys had been studying her face, figuring it would be easy to find her again with the eye patch. But what if it was only a temporary injury and she didn’t always have it on? He took the time to memorise her hair, eye colour, general features in case they crossed paths again, though he typically avoided Candidates.

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - Theodosia - 21.May.18

Theodosia stood tall, well, as tall as someone at five foot four could, head high and face proud. She did not intend on playing the fool before someone from her new home; after all, she had only been here less than a day and already she had done something wrong. This was absolutely NOT how she intended to start her new life here.

The man was quick to explain who Aradissicath was - and did all Dragons have such long names? She'd never be able to remember them if they did! -, and that she belonged to the Weyrwoman. Her eyes, well, eye seeing as she only had the one, widened as she was told the Gold was very possessive and potentially cranky. "I cannot blame her," she said, shaking her head. If she was heavy with so many eggs, she would be grouchy, too. Shards, the thought of being heavy with only a single, shell-less child, set her teeth on edge.

She already knew there was no Dragon upon the sands - she was half blind, not blind, and thus she could see it plain as day when she'd walked out. But something about the blinding white of the sands drew her like a moth to flame, wanting to see what she could expect when there were eggs upon the sand. "My apologies, I wasn't aware. I will make sure to never do it again." and she did sound truly apologetic, and she was. She never meant to break the rules, especially when she was had only just got here; and especially when she was under threat of being sent back home.

"I am Theodosia, sir."

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - D'hys - 22.May.18

D’hys took another moment to take the measure of the girl before him. He could almost respect the way she seemed to try to stare him down and show she wasn’t intimated by him. It was something he actually liked about Ravanna though she also knew her place as a woman and greenrider. This girl still seemed to hold a lot of pride in her which led him to believe she likely came from a higher station. He could have a lot of fun breaking her in but figured Weyr life in general would already do that and decided to wait and see how much she could take before playing any games.

“Well, Theo,” D’hys knew he wouldn’t remember her entire name given she was a freshly landed Candidate and mentioning a ‘Theo something or another’ would be good enough for most people to know who he meant, “let’s get you off the Sands and send you on your way to the midday meal that’s just beginning.” D’hys stepped aside and gestured for the girl to walk out of the Hatching Grounds in front of him so he could keep an eye on her. He believed her apology and didn’t think she would suddenly run around the area like an excitable hatchling. No one would intentionally risk losing their chance to Impress and he felt the simple idea there was a chance of doing so was enough to reign in her curiosity. At least for now; who knew what the next day would bring.

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - Theodosia - 26.May.18

Theodosia looked at the taller man, her own pale, gray eye meeting his darker grays. Well, one of his darker grays, it wasn't quite possible for one eye to meet two. He seemed to be older than her, and she assumed him to be a Rider, having passed the age to be a Candidate. And he didn't really look, or act, the part of a Drudge.

Thankfully, he referred to her as Theo. She hated being called Theodosia, but everyone seemed to insist on calling her that, much to her annoyance. But it was something she had long given up on changing, and so she introduced herself as Theodosia. Perhaps... perhaps the people here would call her Theo? Mother and Father had always insisted that shortening her name, especially to something rather 'masculine', was extremely improper, but the man didn't seem to care. He offered to take her to the meal area, gesturing for her to walk passed him.

Theodosia inclined her head to him, and moved to walk out, looking at him as she said, "Thank you Mr...?"

RE: 738.04.03 | Welcome to the Weyr - D'hys - 03.Jun.18

He had purposely avoided giving his name to her in an attempt to keep her at a distance. He wasn’t like some of the other blueriders, R’nd for example, that went out of their way to greet everyone new to the Weyr, make friends, and extend offers to meet up again soon. D’hys had friends and he had colleagues. Candidates really didn’t fall into any category other than ‘to be avoided’. They always had annoying questions and now that they were North again, some of them seemed barely out of diapers.

He was about to tell her he didn’t give her name for a reason when the idea of intimidating her with rank might be more fun. D’hys pointed to his shoulder to indicate the knots there – she likely had no idea yet what they meant so it was time for some education as well, it seemed, “D’hys of blue Zeianth, the right hand, or strong arm if you prefer, of Weyrleader R’nya.” Some days he felt like he was becoming nice with how much time he spent around R’nya and Rhaedalyn but those urges were easy enough to ignore in order to keep his cushy job and benefits.

“Now that introductions are done, the dining area is just over there,” he pointed to the door across the Bowl where a group of people had just entered. “I won’t be joining you as I have to make a few reports to the Weyrleader.” He didn’t, really, but D’hys was done with his good deed of the day with getting the girl off the Hatching Ground and sending her on her way. He didn’t need to stick around any longer.
