738.10.24 | A Dream So Sweet - Gabrin - 25.Oct.17

Gabrin sat on the blanket spread out on the green grass of an open field, he sipped his glass of wine and admired the beauty of his wife sitting opposite him as she fixed the laces of the shoe of their youngest child. She laughed lightly as she set the boy back to playing with his two older sisters and Gabrin couldn't believe how lucky he was. They had been married six turns and he still couldn't believe how each day was better than the last.

They were always laughing and loved each other which he knew was a rarity in their society. People married to keep their reputation and standing strong and to continue their line. Love was merely a bonus if one was lucky enough. He'd have to thank his brother-in-law, Khoemi, for introducing them. Khoemi had been engaged to Tanriel's sister at the time of their meeting when he moved to Telgar and it had been instant love.

Gabrin didn't think he could ask for more in life with a beautiful caring wife, three precious children, and a close friend that was now also a brother. Another look at Tanriel and he could see from the look in her eyes as she watched their kids play that she wanted another one. He wouldn't allow it though; Gabtanri's birth nearly killed her and he wouldn't risk her life again. She had given him two daughters and a son, she had provided well for him. Neither one of them was first in line for their father's title so he didn't mind not having the so-called heir and spare by having two sons.

He leaned across the spread of light snacks they had packed for their family picnic and stole her lips for a passionate kiss. If only it was one of their private dates without the children, he would have laid her down on the blanket and showed her how much he truly did love her. As it was, words would have to do for now. "I love you, Tanriel." He sat back and held out his glass in a toast, "here's to the rest of our lives together."

Gabrin woke up with a gasp and sat up straight, the sheet falling down his naked body. He cupped his face in the palms of his hands and took a deep breath. What the fuck had that been? He wasn't prone to nightmares and felt he rarely even dreamed but that was the most terrifying thing he had ever witnessed. He reached for the glass on the bedside table and withdrew his hand again without the drink. Right, that wasn't the cool water he was hoping for but the remainders of a Bitra wine. That was the last time he drank that swill before bed.

There was a shifting beside him and Gabrin looked over to see the brownrider K'tir sleeping with the sheet barely covering his rather appetizing body. This was the reality he was happy with and the fact that he could love his wife and children, even in a dream, was enough to turn his stomach and he didn't think it was the wine causing that. Deciding he needed a distraction from that horrifying scene still trying to play out in his head, Gabrin shook the brownrider awake for another round before he sent the man packing back to his Weyr until the next time he was called for.
