734.11.11 | Good Idea at the Time - Gabrin - 11.Mar.14

It had seemed like a good idea at the time, and really, it still was. He had married Tanriel simply because the man he had a physical interest was married to the woman’s sister. He had a barely passing interest in Tanriel but she made his life easier by being his wife. His father wouldn’t harp on him to settle down and she forged a strong link between High Reaches and Telgar thanks to her being a daughter the Telgar Lord. The downside to it all was having to put up with her regularly outside the bedroom. He fooled her easily enough in bed together when he decided they should couple but she was much older and dreadfully dull with her clothes on. But she kept Khoemi tied to them since the sisters were close and Gabrin continued to pretend he cared about her or their children.

Earlier in the day, Tanriel had announced she would be spending the night at her sister’s place with their children. It was an increasingly common thing for them to do but the girls had decided to leave the kids in the care of the staff at Gabrin’s home. That meant both husbands had been booted out for the evening and told to go enjoy themselves. After all, they were brother-in-laws and such good friends that they were due some away time from it all as well. That was fine by Gabrin since he was indeed overdue for picking on Khoemi and decided a night in the tavern was a good way to do it.

They had started out sitting together for one drink that had Khoemi glowering for the entirety before Gabrin got up to mingle. He knew the staff and some of the regulars that were in that night and felt it only polite to chat to everyone and give Khoemi his space. He assumed it would actually start to bother the man after a while that he sat alone, watching Gabrin drink, laugh, and tell stories with everyone but he couldn’t say what type of response that would illicit.

As the night wore on, the music from a barely passable Journeyman Harper got bawdier and the patrons drunker. Gabrin made it seem like he was tossing back the drinks as much as everyone else but thanks to the solid mug he drank his ale from, unlike the clear glass when he switched to wine, no one but the bartender caught on to the fact that he always left a quarter of the mug full.

Around midnight, Gabrin was weighing his options with a female that kept cozying up to him and a man that had been a steady drinking partner all evening and still seemed rather clear of mind. His hands wandered to both regularly but Gabrin refrained from any true public displays. In the end, he turned to find Khoemi and grinned as he raised his mug in salute to the man.
